Thai parties jostle for power after 1st election since coup Tassanee Vejpongsa & Grant Peck Bangkok (AP) - The two top parties began angling for the upper hand in forming a new government in Thailand on Monday after partial results showed no group won a majority of seats in the country’s first national election since a 2014 military coup. One outcome: many accusations of cheating in Sunday’s vote, in efforts to discredit the other side’s claim to leadership and perhaps get some winners disqualified. The allegations highlight continuing deep divisions in Thailand, which has been wracked by political instability for nearly two decades. The junta-appointed Election Commission announced the results of 350 constituency races but said full vote counts, which are needed to allocate 150 other seats in the House of Representatives, won’t be available until Friday after apparent counting problems. The partial results showed the military-backed Palang Pracharath party won the most popular votes nationwide. But under a complicated new electoral system put in place by the junta, the antimilitary Pheu Thai party is likely to win the highest number of seats in the House.
Each party insists its advantage gives it the right to try to form a government, though neither holds a majority in terms of votes or seats. And because an unelected 250-member Senate appointed by the junta will also vote for prime minister, a party must win a combined 376 votes to assure victory. That vote will likely take place sometime in May and give Palang Pracharath’s candidate, current junta Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, a considerable advantage. The election is the latest chapter in a nearly two-decade struggle pitching conservative forces including the military, courts and ultraroyalists against the political machine of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, a tycoon who upended tradition-bound Thai politics with a populist political revolution and is now despised by the military. Thaksin now lives in exile abroad to avoid a prison term, but parties allied with him have won every election since 2001 despite repeated efforts by the military and courts to block his influence. His sister, Yingluck Shinawatra, who led the Pheu Thai government that was ousted in 2014, also

fled the country after what supporters said was a politically motivated prosecution. While behind-the-scenes recruitment of smaller parties is the main way for Palang Pracharath or Pheu Thai to try to gain enough support to form a government, the public battle is being fought with cries of foul on social media, mostly from Pheu Thai partisans. Although formal ties between Thaksin and Pheu Thai are now legally banned, he amplified the accusations of foul play in an op-ed in
Pattaya goes to the polls Staff reporters Pattaya residents went to the polls, braving hot weather to cast ballots in the first unfettered general election in eight years. Polling stations across the area were busy from morning until they closed at 5 p.m. Voter Nopparat Mekkluen said she got to the voting booths set up at Nong Or Temple early because she wanted to avoid the noon-time sun. Pairoj Prawatlertudom, chairman of the National Police Board at Banglamung Police Station, also turned
up early, saying he wanted to cast a ballot for the people he thinks would work best for the country. Resident Somdet Sansuktaveesub also was there early, saying he had expected more people than normal to cast ballots. As it turned out, voter turnout across the country fell far below expectations at just 66 percent, down from 80% in the previous week’s early voting. Actress and model Urassaya “Yaya” Sperbund brought some star power to the voting at Pattaya School No. 8. She posed for photos
and interviews after casting her vote, saying she wanted to see everyone come out to the polls. So many people made their way to polls at Pattaya School No. 7 that Sukhumvit Road came to a standstill as voters made their way to there. For many people, this was the first opportunity to cast votes since 2011, or ever. While polls did open in Pattaya in 2014, the general election that year was invalidated as voting was never completed in many locations around the country due to political protests.

The New York Times on Monday. His complaints included inconsistent and delayed results from the Election Commission, ballot numbers exceeding voters in some areas, turnouts twice the number of registered voters,
and a suspiciously large number of voided ballots. Thailand’s main poll-watching organizations have not yet publicly addressed most of the allegations. The watchdog group P-Net charged that the junta-appointed Election Commission was inefficient, and that it had found vote buying ahead of the voting. But there is concern about the other allegations. Allen Hicken, professor of political science at the University of Michigan, noted that while Thaksin’s words read as “sour grapes,” the allegations have been circulating widely. He said he considered the three most troubling issues to be the delayed result announcements, turnouts exceeding 100 percent and a large number of invalid ballots. Hicken said he would withhold judgment pending explanations by the Election Commission, “but all three are consistent with electoral chicanery in other contexts.”
The commission’s secretary-general, Charoongwit Poomma, defended its handling of Sunday’s vote and said delays in announcing full results reflect its duty to ensure the election is free and fair. He said he had not received reports of issues such as excessive voting numbers or disappearing votes. The cheating charges come on top of the judgment by many human rights and prodemocracy groups that the rules set by the junta made a fair election impossible. Palang Pracharath chief Uttama Savanayana said it will contact like-minded parties to form a new government. The leader of Pheu Thai, Sudarat Keyuraphan, also said they would try to form a government because they won the most constituency races. “The party with the most seats is the one that has received the confidence from the people to set up the government,” Sudarat said.
Voters reject Itthiphol, Poramet MP bids Jetsada Homklin Pattaya-area voters rejected the city’s former mayor and deputy mayor in Sunday’s lowerhouse election, choosing instead candidates from the upstart Future Forward Party. Eight-year mayor Itthiphol Kunplome lost to Jarat Kumkainam in Chonburi Constituency 6 and recent deputy mayor Poramet Ngampichet was defeated by Kawinnart Takee, according to unofficial vote counts released March 25. The results were a shocking repudiation for two members of the entrenched Kunplome political family, who shunned former alliances to join the junta-backed Palang Patcharat Party, which finished first in the popular vote across the nation. According to the tally, Jarat collected 33,438 votes compared with Itthiphol’s 29,144. Kawinnart won 31,247 votes to Poramet’s 28,001. Palang Patcharat also was rebuffed in Constituency 5, with Future Forward’s Kwanlert Panitchmart defeating military supporter Pantusak Ketwatta 32,490 to 29,715. Itthiphol and Poramet’s defeats illustrate how many in the electorate – including large numbers of young voters who had never cast ballots before – rejected establishment politics, especially those whose loyalties flip with whomever is in power. Poramet is the son, and Itthiphol the brother, of former cabinet ministers in the Thaksin Shinawatra government, but had eschewed the Thaksin-aligned Pheu Thai Party to join the military’s Palang Patcharat. Itthiphol’s older brother, Sonthaya, was appointed Pattaya’s mayor by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha for whom he also had worked as a political advisor. Sonthaya named Poramet as deputy mayor. Both Poramet and Itthiphol’s families have a history of aligning with whomever sits in the prime minister’s office, be it Thaksin, the yellow shirt-supported Democrat Party or, most recently, through the Kunplomefounded Palang Chon Party. Both men thanked their supporters and staff via social media, saying they appreciated the

AP Explains: What Facebook’s ‘privacy vision’ really means Mae Anderson New York (AP) - Mark Zuckerberg’s abrupt declaration of a new “privacy vision” for social networking was for many people a sort of Rorschach test. Looked at one way, the manifesto reads as an apology of sorts for Facebook’s history of privacy transgressions, and suggested that the social network would de-emphasize its huge public social network in favor of private messaging between individuals and among small groups. Looked at another, it turned Facebook into a kind of privacy champion by embracing encrypted messaging that’s shielded from prying eyes - including those of Facebook itself. Yet another reading suggested the whole thing was a public-relations exercise designed to lull its users while Facebook entrenches its competitive position in messaging and uses it to develop new sources of user data to feed its voracious advertising machine. As with many things Facebook, the truth lies somewhere in between. Facebook so far isn’t elaborating much on Zuckerberg’s manifesto. Here’s a guide to what we know at the moment about its plans.
What’s happening to Facebook? In one sense, nothing. Its existing social network, with its newsfeeds and pages and 2.3 billion global users and $22 billion in 2018 profit, won’t change and will likely
continue to grow. Although user growth has been stagnant in North America, Facebook’s global user base expanded 9 percent in the last quarter of 2018. But Zuckerberg suggested that Facebook’s future growth will depend more on private messaging such as what it offers with its WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram Direct services. The Facebook CEO said private messaging between individuals and small groups is “by far” the fastest growing part of online communications. Naturally, Facebook wants to be there in a big way.
What’s changing in Messaging? Its first step will be to make its three messaging services communicate better with each other. That would let you message a friend on WhatsApp from Facebook Messenger, which isn’t currently possible. It would also link your messaging accounts to your Facebook ID, so people can find you more easily. Zuckerberg also promised to greatly increase the security of these messages. It will implement so-called end-toend encryption for messaging, which would scramble them so that no one but the sender and recipients could read them. That would bar access by governments and Facebook. WhatsApp is already encrypted this way, but Messenger and Instagram Direct are not. The first change users might notice is their address book, said Siva Vaidhyanathan,
What it means for privacy
Media and guests tour Facebook’s new 130,000square-foot offices, which occupy the top three floors of a 10-story Cambridge, Mass., building. director of the Center for Media and Citizenship at the University of Virginia. While your Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp contacts might be quite different now, if the services combine to some degree, your contact lists will, too. “As these services merge, we might end up basically having these huge combined address books from three messaging services,” he said.
When this will happen You’re not likely to see any of these changes anytime soon. In his blog post, Zuckerberg said the plan will be rolled out “over the next few years. ... A lot of this work is in the early stages.” And it’s subject to change. EMarketer analyst Debra Aho Williamson points out that previous Facebook visions of the future haven’t
quite panned out. A few years ago, for instance, Zuckerberg predicted that video and augmented and virtual reality would be a much bigger part of Facebook than what materialized, for example. But it shows that Facebook is trying to adapt as people shift toward services like Instagram and WhatsApp over Facebook - which today has 15 million fewer U.S. users than in since 2017, according to Edison Research. In his post Zuckerberg said he expects Messenger and WhatsApp will eventually become the main ways people communicate on Facebook’s network. “There’s not a sense that things will fundamentally change overnight, or even probably this year,” Williamson said, “But it signals Facebook is thinking more seriously about embracing the way people communicate today.”
Encrypted messaging is in many ways a big plus for privacy. But the way Facebook collects information about you on its main service site isn’t changing, said Jen King, director of consumer privacy at Stanford Law School’s Center for Internet and Society. “This is limited to a very specific part of the platform and it doesn’t really address all the ways Facebook is still collecting data about you,” she said. So users should still be alert about privacy settings and careful about what they choose to share on Facebook. Facebook is likely to collect data about your messaging - so-called metadata that, according to security experts, will let it know who you communicate with, when and how often you text them, where you are when you do it and for how long. That can tell Facebook a lot about you even if it can’t read the contents of your messages.
Vanishing posts Though the timeline is hazy, Zuckerberg did outline other changes users will eventually see. He said the company is looking at ways to make messages less permanent, a la Snapchat or Instagram “Stories,” which disappear after 24 hours. “Messages could be deleted after a month or a year by default,” Zuckerberg wrote. “This would reduce the risk of your messages resurfacing and embarrassing
you later.” Zuckerberg said users will have the ability to change the time frame or turn off auto-deletion. “And we could also provide an option for you to set individual messages to expire after a few seconds or minutes if you wanted.”
Payments Facebook will likely also expand the way users can use its platform to pay for things, said Justin Brookman, director of consumer privacy and technology policy for Consumer Reports. Zuckerberg didn’t mention any new payment plans specifically but did bring up payments four times in his post. Currently Facebook lets its users pay friends or businesses digitally by linking a credit card or PayPal account and that’s method is not likely to change anytime soon. But as Facebook looks to emulate Chinese behemoth WeChat, it could let you reserve a table through Facebook instead of going through an outside app, or order an Uber. “Ideally Facebook will try to get a cut of all transactions,” Brookman said. A digital currency of Facebook’s own is also rumored to be in the works. “Like many other companies Facebook is exploring ways to leverage the power of blockchain technology,” Facebook said in a statement. “This new small team is exploring many different applications. We don’t have anything further to share.”
WWWorries? Inventor of Web laments coming-of-age woes Jamey Keaten Geneva (AP) - The inventor of http for the World Wide Web knows his revolutionary innovation is coming of age, and doesn’t always like what he sees: state-sponsored hacking, online harassment, hate speech and misinformation among the ills of its “digital adolescence.” Tim Berners-Lee issued a cri-de-coeur letter and spoke to a few reporters on the eve of the 30-year anniversary of his first paper with an outline of what would become another big step toward transforming countless lives and the global economy. The European Organization for Nuclear Research, known as CERN, plans to host Berners-Lee and other web aficionados. “We’re celebrating, but we’re also very concerned,” Berners-Lee said. Late last year, a key threshold was crossed - roughly half the world has gotten
online. Today some 2 billion websites exist. The anniversary offers “an opportunity to reflect on how far we have yet to go,” Berners-Lee said, calling the “fight” for the web “one of the most important causes of our time.” He is convinced the online population will continue to grow, but says accessibility issues continue to beset much of the world. “Look at the 50 percent who are on the web, and it’s not so pretty for them,” he said. “They are all stepping back suddenly horrified after the Trump and Brexit elections realizing that this web thing that they thought was so cool has actually not necessarily been serving humanity very well.” The anniversary is also a nod to the innovative, collaborative and open-source mindset at the Geneva-based CERN, where physicists smash particles together to

unlock secrets of science and the universe. As a young English software engineer, Berners-Lee came up with the idea for hypertext-transfer protocol the “http” that adorns web addresses - and other building blocks for the web while
working at CERN in March 1989. Some trace the actual start of the web to 1990, when he released the first web browser. Berners-Lee reminisced about how he was really out to get disparate computer systems to talk to one another, and resolve the “burning frustration” over a “lack of interoperability” of documentation from disparate computing systems used at CERN in the late 1980s. Now, the hope of his World Wide Web Foundation is to enlist governments, companies, and citizens to take a greater role in shaping the web for good under principles laid out in its “Contract for the Web.” Under the contract’s sweeping, broad ambition, governments are supposed to make sure everyone can connect to the internet, to keep it available and to respect privacy. Companies are to make the internet
affordable, respect privacy and develop technology that will put people - and the “public good” - first. Citizens are to create and to cooperate and respect “civil discourse,” among other things. To Berners-Lee, the web is a “mirror of humanity” where “you will see good and bad.” “The Contract for the Web recognizes that whether humanity, in fact, is constructive or not actually depends on the way you write the code of the social network,” he said. Some tough regulation may be necessary in some places, in others not, Berners-Lee said. On one issue, he’s insistent: “Net neutrality - strong regulation,” Berners-Lee said, hammering a fist on the table. He was alluding to a principle that anyone with an internet connection should have equal access to video, music, email, photos, social networks, maps and other online material.
Berners-Lee said the web has created opportunity, made lives easier and given the marginalized a voice, but “it has also created opportunity for scammers, given a voice to those who spread hatred, and made all kinds of crime easier to commit.” Ultimately, his “Contract” proposal is not about “quick fixes,” but a process for shifting people’s relationship with the online world, he said. “It’s our journey from digital adolescence to a more mature, responsible and inclusive future,” he wrote. (Editor’s note: There were earlier versions of what eventually became the internet, including the Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET), established in 1969 and closed in 1990, an early packet-switching network and the first network to implement the TCP/ IP protocol suite. Both technologies became the technical foundation of the Internet.)

Is your blood pressure about to blow the top of your head off? One of the mandatory tests at my hospital, when you make an appointment to see a doctor, is a blood pressure reading, usually denoted as “BP”. These days there are numerous medications so your BP doesn’t blow your hat off! I speak from experience here, as I take blood pressure tablets to keep my BP within the normal range, which they do (provided I remember take them)! For many reasons, including forgetfulness, I had not taken any for over a week. (Test for Alzheimers Disease – it you can remember you’ve forgotten you haven’t got it – BUT if you’ve forgotten you’ve forgotten, then you’re on the way.) When I remembered I had forgotten my tablets, I popped into one of the Out Patients Clinics and got the nurse to take my BP. It was 158/87. Too high. I need to remember to take my tablets! However, about 30 minutes later I had my BP checked again. This time 147/76. Much better, but still marginally up. How could this be? To complicate the matters even more, I had my BP checked this week. Result 120/65. Were all the machines wrong?
No, the machines were not wrong, but what you have to understand is that BP is not a constant number, but fluctuates for many reasons – rushing, coffee, anxiety, cigarettes, being nearly run over by a baht bus or taxi motorcy and a whole host of others. This is why, if your doctor tells you that you have “hypertension” (high BP that needs treating) on just one reading – don’t believe him (or her). So how do you find out if your BP is too high? Quite simply by repeated measurements. Just as one swallow doesn’t make a summer, one elevated reading does not necessarily mean hypertension. And one low reading does not mean your heart is giving up. So why is BP important? Because if you don’t have BP you are definitely dead! However, if your BP is too high for too long, it can mean you could be claiming early on your life insurance policy – or your relatives will, on your behalf. High BP is otherwise known as the “silent killer” as there are very few symptoms of the increase in blood pressure until a vessel bursts somewhere, generally catastrophically! The good thing is you are dead within minutes, so you won’t linger.
So what is the correct BP? The following table shows the categories of BP measurements. Optimal: less than 120/80 Normal: less than 130/80 High-normal: 130–139/85–89 High blood pressure (hypertension): Stage 1: 140–159/90–99 Stage 2: 160–179/100–109 Stage 3: 180 or higher/110 or higher Now, if you really have hypertension, get it treated – but remember to have repeated measurements done, and don’t let the doctor classify you as being “hypertensive” until repeated measurements confirm that your BP really is too high. As part of the routine in most good hospitals and clinics is the measurement of your blood pressure. You should get this done at least twice a year. Rising or elevated readings do mean you should get medical advice. High BP affects all the organs such as brain, heart, lungs, liver, kidneys. Stop smoking today and watch your BP return to the normal range.
Brain stimulation improves depression symptoms, restores brain waves in clinical study Chapel Hill, N.C. (AP Business Wire) Mar 11, 2019 — With a weak alternating electrical current sent through electrodes attached to the scalp, UNC School of Medicine researchers successfully targeted a naturally occurring electrical pattern in a specific part of the brain and markedly improved depression symptoms in about 70 percent of participants in a clinical study. The research, published in Translational Psychiatry, lays the groundwork for larger research studies to use a specific kind of electrical brain stimulation called transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) to treat people diagnosed with major depression. “We conducted a small study of 32 people because this sort of approach had never been done before,” said senior author Flavio Frohlich, PhD, associate professor of psychiatry and director of the Carolina Center for Neurostimulation. “Now that we’ve documented how this kind of tACS can reduce depression symptoms, we can fine tune our approach to help many people in a relatively inexpensive, noninvasive way.” Frohlich, who joined the UNC School of Medicine in 2011, is a leading pioneer in this field who also published the first clinical trials of tACS in schizophrenia and chronic pain. His tACS approach is unlike the more common brain stimulation technique called transcranial direct stimulation (tDCS), which sends a steady stream of weak electricity

through electrodes attached to various parts of the brain. That approach has had mixed results in treating various conditions, including depression. Frohlich’s tACS paradigm is newer and has not been investigated as thoroughly as tDCS. Frohlich’s approach focuses on each individual’s specific alpha oscillations, which appear as waves between 8 and 12 Hertz on an electroencephalogram (EEG). The waves in this range rise in predominance when we close our eyes and daydream, meditate, or conjure ideas – essentially when our brains shut out sensory stimuli, such as what we see, feel, and hear. Previous research showed that people with depression featured imbalanced alpha oscillations; the waves were overactive in the left frontal cortex. Frohlich thought his team could target these oscillations to bring them back in synch with the alpha oscillations in the right frontal cortex. And if Frohlich’s team could achieve that, then maybe depression symptoms would be decreased.
His lab recruited 32 people diagnosed with depression and surveyed each participant before the study, according to the Montgomery–Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS), a standard measure of depression. The participants were then separated into three groups. One group received the sham placebo stimulation – a brief electrical stimulus to mimic the sensation at the beginning of a tACS session. A control group received a 40-Hertz tACS intervention, well outside the range that the researchers thought would affect alpha oscillations. A third group received the treatment intervention – a 10-Hertz tACS electrical current that targeted each individual’s naturally occurring alpha waves. Each person underwent their invention for 40 minutes on five consecutive days. None of the participants knew which group they were in, and neither did the researchers, making this a randomized doubleblinded clinical study – the gold standard in biomedical research. Each participant took the MADRS immediately following the five-day regimen, at two weeks, and again at four weeks.
Prior to the study, Frohlich set the primary outcome at four weeks, meaning that the main goal of the study was to assess whether tACS could bring each individual’s alpha waves back into balance and decrease symptoms of depression four weeks after the five-day intervention. He set this primary outcome because scientific literature on the study of tDCS also used the four-week mark. Frohlich’s team found that participants in the 10-Hertz tACS group featured a decrease in alpha oscillations in the left frontal cortex; they were brought back in synch with the right side of the frontal cortex. But the researchers did not find a statistically significant decrease in depression symptoms in the 10-Hertz tACS group, as opposed to the sham or control groups at four weeks. But when Frohlich’s team looked at data from two weeks after treatment, they found that 70 percent of people in the treatment group reported at least a 50 percent reduction of depression symptoms, according to their MADRS scores. This response rate was significantly higher than the one for the two other control groups. A few of the participants had such dramatic decreases that Frohlich’s team is currently writing casestudies on them. Participants in the placebo and control groups experienced no such reduction in symptoms. “It’s important to note that this is a first-of-its kind study,” Frohlich said. “When we started this research with computer simulations and preclinical studies, it was unclear if we would see an effect in people days after tACS treatment – let alone if tACS could become a treatment for
psychiatric illnesses. It was unclear what would happen if we treated people several days in a row or what effect we might see weeks later. So, the fact that we’ve seen such positive results from this study gives me confidence our approach could help many people with depression.” Frohlich’s lab is currently recruiting for two similar follow-up studies. Other authors of the Translational Psychiatry paper are co-first authors Morgan Alexander, study coordinator and graduate student, and Sankaraleengam Alagapan, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow, both in the department of psychiatry at UNC-Chapel Hill; David Rubinow, MD, the Assad Meymandi Distinguished Professor and Chair of Psychiatry at the UNC
School of Medicine; former UNC postdoctoral fellow Caroline Lustenberger, PhD; and Courtney Lugo and Juliann Mellin, both study coordinators at the UNC School of Medicine. This research was funded through grants from the Brain Behavior Research Foundation, National Institutes of Health, the BRAIN Initiative, and the Foundation of Hope. Frohlich holds joint appointments at UNC-Chapel Hill in the department of cell biology and physiology and the Joint UNC-NC State Department of Biomedical Engineering. He is also a member of the UNC Neuroscience Center. Online: https://www. businesswire.com/news/ home/20190311005909/en/

Escaped lion spends night in jail cell in South Africa Johannesburg (AP) - A lion that escaped a wildlife park and was captured weeks later after he reportedly managed to crawl underneath the park’s electric fence, spent the night in a South African jail cell until authorities could send him back to the place he’s meant to call home. The lion was recaptured when four sheep and two goats were killed on a farm in the vicinity. Photos taken on Wednesday show the darted lion sprawled out in the cell, surrounded by onlookers. The lion had escaped from the Karoo National Park, 40 kilometers (25 miles) from the area close to Sutherland where he was found. South Africa’s parks service tweeted that the lion had to wait in the cell until a crate arrived for his transport back to the park.

Court: Middle finger protected by the constitution Taylor, Mich. (AP) - When it comes to the middle finger, police might need a thicker skin. A federal appeals court says a Michigan woman’s constitutional rights were violated when she was handed a speeding ticket after giving the finger to a suburban Detroit officer in 2017. The decision means a lawsuit by Debra Cruise-Gulyas can proceed. In a 3-0 decision Wednesday, the court said Taylor Officer Matthew Minard “should have known better,” even if the driver was rude. Minard stopped Cruise-Gulyas and wrote her a ticket for a lesser violation. But when that stop was over, Cruise-Gulyas raised her middle finger. Minard pulled her over again and changed the ticket to a more serious speeding offense. CruiseGulyas sued, saying her free-speech rights and her rights against unreasonable seizure were violated.
Germany: Crematorium goes up in flames, bodies survive Berlin (AP) - A fire at a crematorium in southern Germany has caused significant damage to the building - but the 20 bodies stored inside remained intact. German news agency dpa reported Thursday that the cause of the overnight fire in Schwaebisch Hall, about 175 kilometers (110 miles) southeast of Frankfurt, was still being investigated. Dpa quoted regional police saying the bodies were largely unharmed by the blaze, which is estimated to have caused about 1.5 million euros ($1.7 million) in damages.

Germany: Drunk passenger demands high-speed train slow down Berlin (AP) - German police say a drunken man with a fire extinguisher smashed his way into the driver’s cab of a high-speed train running from Frankfurt to Paris and demanded that the driver slow down. Federal police said the ICE train operated by Germany’s Deutsche Bahn stopped near Frankfurt after the incident Sunday morning. The 30year-old man from Heideberg, who wasn’t identified, was arrested and faces an investigation into dangerous interference in rail traffic, among other things. Police say passengers said the man took a fire extinguisher off the wall, smashed a glass door separating the cab from the passenger compartment, and told the shocked driver the train was going much too fast and he had to save the passengers. No passengers were hurt but the train was taken out of service.

The camera is only an extension of your mind
There are many photographers in the past that I admire. They all have one thing in common. They knew what they are looking at, and believed they knew what the final result should be. And guess what, none of them used a digital camera. Look at the photograph this week of the eminent historian Thomas Carlyle. That was taken in 1867 and is ranked as one of the most powerful portraits in the history of photography, and yet was taken with totally primitive equipment. Megapixels hadn’t even been invented. Look again - technically it is imperfect. There is blurring of the image, and when you realize that the shutter was open for probably around
three minutes, then you can see why. The sitter could not possibly remain motionless for that period of time. But it has the power to mesmerize you. How? The dynamics of this shot come from the very first principles of photography painting with light. It is not the subject that makes the shot - it is the way you light the subject, and this is the prime example, taken so many years ago. The light is falling on the sitter almost from the side and slightly above. One eye is partially lit and the other in shadow. The hair and beard show up strongly. The photo is totally confrontational. Analyze further. If the face had been front lit, and both eyes, the nose and the mouth were all clearly visible then there would be no air of mystery. The dark areas of the photograph have made you look further into it. You begin to imagine what the features were like. You also begin to imagine what the person was like. You have just experienced
Dear Hillary, Are you really that much of a recluse that you never go out at night, go to parties, enjoy yourself and suchlike? I tried ringing your office but got told that you had gone out and couldn’t be contacted. I tried a couple of days later and got told the same thing. I asked to be put through to your office but the phone rang through. Gary Dear Gary, I’m sorry we didn’t manage to connect, but I am very busy daytime, and this runs over to evenings. I don’t go out after 7 p.m. as the motorists try and run poor bicycle riders off the road, when we’ve got just as much rights as the car drivers. Only thing is they don’t get hurt, while the two wheelers do. A friend of mine had a leg broken by a car and he just drove off. My friend was in so much distress that she didn’t get the number of the car. Dear Hillary, I read that you finally got your tunnel open. Well done! And it was only three years too! I see that not only has the tunnel fixed the traffic jams, but it has also fixed the revenue section at the police station. The sign that says no motorcycles is plain enough, but in the first three days 18 of them apparently couldn’t read the sign and had to cough up 1,000 baht for the pleasure. Perhaps this is why motorcyclists feature so high in the deaths on the road? The amazing thing is that it hasn’t flooded yet. Gregory Dear Gregory, I am all for anything to cut down the road toll, Petal, but
the “perfect” portrait. The shot was taken by Julia Margaret Cameron (1815 1879) a British lady who, in her late forties, took up the new fangled notion of photography. This was not the age of the point and shoot simplicity we enjoy today. This was the age of making your own photographic plates by painting a mixture of chemicals all over it - chemicals you mixed yourself - exposing the plate in a wooden box camera and then fixing the negative in more chemicals and finally making a print. It was the 29th of January 1864 when Mrs. Cameron finally produced her first usable print. She had made the exposure at 1 p.m. and in her diary recorded the fact that by 8 p.m. she had made and framed the final print. (And you think you are doing it tough if the ‘review’ function takes more than one millisecond to show you the result!) Julia Margaret Cameron made close up portraits 30x40 cm. However, she would not have managed to photograph
so many of the notables of the era had it not been for her next door neighbor, the Poet Laureate, Alfred Lord Tennyson. After Tennyson saw his own portrait he persuaded his eminent friends
I’m not sure that there are too many deaths attributable to tunnels. Especially ones only a few hundred meters long, divided and straight. It’s not as if it were the Mont Blanc Tunnel (11 km) is it? It has very strict rules as a truck crash in the middle of the tunnel would be a disaster. Dear Hillary, (In response to a contributor suggesting older ladies for foreigners, rather than the younger ones.) The odds of a woman over thirty getting married in Thailand is on par with getting hit by a three legged gaur on Saturday the 32nd. I would imagine the “friend” of the deceased saw a vulnerable old fool at the temple and slipped him a ‘free one’ ... oldest trick in the book. No doubt her suitcases had been behind the door since the funeral. However, I am sure she will make a good partner and look after him very well. The deceased would approve. Roy Dear Roy, How many cynical pills did you eat this morning? There are many over 30s Thai who get married, just the same as the over 30s in other countries. The over 30s ladies who try again with men (well) over 30 should be encouraged, not discouraged, by people like you. They do make for good, faithful spouses. Or did you get a bad one? Dear Hillary, Re the couple a few weeks ago who wanted to know where to eat. I suggest Apex and Lek hotels buffets as each has at least 30 buffet items at very reasonable prices when you
to sit for her as well. Most of these portraits were different from the Thomas Carlyle photograph in that they were taken in profile. Mrs. Cameron felt that the innate intelligence could be more easily seen in
the profile and this may have been the result of the influence of the quasi-science of Phrenology, whereby your cranial bumps showed your true talents, which was all the rage at that time! Julia Margaret Cameron has contributed to photography by showing that it is the eye of the photographer that dictates the photograph, not the “smartness” of the equipment. She also showed a personal determination to succeed which should be an example to the young photographers of today. So you can stop reading the photographic magazines to see if you should buy the latest offerings with 1000 megapixels complete with one millionth of a second shutter speed and dedicated flash power for up to three kilometers and just go out and take photographs with what you have got. Look at what is in front of you and “make” your own photographs “work” for you. Thus endeth the inspirational lesson. Thank you Mrs. Cameron.

No viola jokes, please encouraged by the emergence of the British viola virtuosi such as Lionel Tertis and William Primrose. The result was that many English composers seized the opportunity to write a concerto for the instrument as did European ones. The Big Three concertos of the today’s viola repertoire are those by William Walton, Paul Hindemith and Béla Bartók.
William Walton (19021983): Viola Concerto. Antoine Tamestit (vla), Frankfurt Radio Symphony cond. Manfred Honeck William Walton in 1937. (Duration: 30:16; You can’t be a member of the years that followed com- Video: 1080p HD)
an orchestra for long without hearing a viola joke. It’s part of the culture. Caustic remarks about violas and viola players go back much further in history than you’d expect, to the eighteenth century in fact. At that time, viola parts were generally fairly easy and acted as a kind of harmonic filler to the music, while all the interesting stuff was given to the violins or cellos. In an article in Strad magazine, Martin Boyd quotes the composer Johann Joachim Quantz who wrote in 1752, “The viola is commonly regarded as of little importance in the musical establishment...it is often played by persons who are either still beginners…or have no particular gifts with which to distinguish themselves on the violin.” Times have changed of course. In
posers came to admire the rich tone of the viola and in today’s orchestral music viola parts are quite as challenging as any other. But the jokes have stuck. In terms of musical range, the viola overlaps the violin and the cello. It’s really an alto violin and indeed the French word for the viola is “alto”. Because the range of the viola is too low for the treble clef and too high for the bass clef, the viola is unique in having a clef of its own, known not surprisingly as the alto clef. The instrument occasionally plays a major role in orchestral music and Strauss’s symphonic poem Don Quixote and the symphony Harold in Italy by Hector Berlioz spring to mind. By the early 20th century, more composers began to write concertos for the viola,
This viola concerto was written in 1929 and was Walton’s first successful large-scale concert work. It was composed for the viola player Lionel Tertis who first ungraciously turned it down on the grounds of its perceived modernism. Tertis always regretted this decision and performed the work a few years later. The premiere of the concerto was given by the German composer and viola player Paul Hindemith. The concerto was well received and brought Walton instant recognition. Ironically, thirty years later, Walton’s music was being criticized for being too old fashioned, such are the vagaries of musical taste.
Music which sounded “modern” in the 1920s falls more gently on 21st century ears. The first movement is slow and lyrical, characterized by soaring melodies and rich orchestration which makes use of the viola’s wonderfully sonorous lower register. The second movement (09:27) is fast and scurrying with a wealth of scampering melodies and bold, confident orchestral writing with notoriously difficult passages for the soloist. The finale (14:25) begins in a relaxed mood with a lilting folk-like viola melody and contrasts vigorous rhythmic sections and powerful brass writing with flowing melodies of exceptional beauty. The concerto ends as quietly and magically as it began. Incidentally, Walton was born in born in Oldham, Lancashire on 29th March.
Peng-Peng Gong (b. 1992): Viola Concerto. Liyuan Liu (vla), Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra cond. Liang Zhang (Duration: 37:50; Video: 720p HD) Peng-Peng Gong was born in Nanjing and quickly recognized as a rare child prodigy. His first symphony, written at the age of sixteen was nominated for the 2011 Hollywood Music in Media Awards. He already has ten symphonies and a vast amount of other music to his credit. This concerto dates
Harlan Coben’s ‘Run Away’ has an array of emotions Jeff Ayers Simon works on Wall Street, and his wife, Ingrid, is a successful doctor. They had a wonderful family life until their oldest daughter, Paige, leaves to attend college. At first, things seem to be going well, but something happens that turns Paige into a drug addict and she runs off with her abusive dealer. Simon learns that Paige occasionally sings for money in Central Park. When he approaches her, she runs. He goes after
her, but her boyfriend and dealer, Aaron, confronts
him. Simon punches him, and within moments bystanders tackle him and Aaron gets away. Simon soon becomes vilified on social media as the rich guy violently hitting an underprivileged person. For three months Simon waits for the furor to die down, always wondering if Paige is OK and hoping he can find her and get her the help she needs. Three months after the incident in Central Park, a police detective arrives at Simon’s office with questions.
Author Harlan Coben is a master at taking what seems to be an ordinary family and exposing the facade and secrets that are buried just below the surface. With “Run Away,” his writing and storytelling are firing on all cylinders and the seemingly straightforward tale takes a sharp turn when it’s least expected. The narrative continues to navigate that twisty mountainous road until the shocking conclusion. The book has an array of emotions and an unpredictable outcome. (AP)
from 2016 and is profoundly influenced by the 1951 novel by J. D. Salinger, The Catcher in the Rye. The concerto reflects the thoughts and actions of Holden Caulfield, the key character in the novel and during this video performance, rolling subtitles describe the inspiration for the music. The music in this concerto is approachable and attractive. Like the Walton concerto, the first movement opens with a long soliloquy for solo viola which gradually builds in intensity with soft chordal accompaniment from the orchestral strings. In some ways, the music evokes the sounds of another age. The
second movement (12:15) is a galumphing jazzy waltz with a nostalgic tune that rather reminded me of Kurt Weill and images of a decadent society. The music breaks into a frenzied jazzinspired section with bright rhythms and percussive interjections. The third movement (22:44) begins with the viola and piano playing the simple Scots melody Coming through the Rye which is a variant of the tune to which Auld Lang Syne is usually sung. While the music later brings a kaleidoscope of mood changes, it eventually leads us back to the solitary reflective spirit of the start of the concerto.

Brilliant virtuosity at Ben’s Theater Colin Kaye In January 1828, the Czech violinist Josef Slavík and pianist Carl Maria von Bocklet gave the first performance of Schubert’s incredibly difficult Fantasie for violin and piano at the Landhaussaal in Vienna. Slavík was one of the finest violinists of his day and was considered on a par with Paganini. The work was designed to display Slavik’s brilliant technique and even the piano part has been described by the Russian pianist Nikolai Lugansky as “the most difficult music ever written for the piano”. It’s a long, complex work and absolutely crammed with notes. The premiere proved too much for the notoriously fickle Viennese audience. The hall gradually emptied and even the local music critic crept away before the end. Despite this inauspicious start the Fantasia has become one of the staples of the advanced violin repertoire. It was a pleasure to hear the work recently at Ben’s Theater in Jomtien where, I was pleased to observe, none of the audience attempted an early departure. The work
was the opening item in a recital given by violinist Sittichai Pengcharoen and pianist Eri Nakagawa both of whom are among the most respected musicians in Thailand. The opening of the Schubert was magical with the sustained melody and warm violin tone. The technical assurance during this huge work was impressive and the closing section was triumphant bringing an enthusiastic response from the audience. This year marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of Clara Schumann. She was of course the wife of the composer Robert Schumann and in her day, she was considered one of the most distinguished musicians in the country. One of the last works she composed for piano was entitled Variations on a Theme by Robert Schumann, Op. 20. The theme in question is from one of her husband’s many piano pieces and Clara presented the work to him on his forty-third birthday in 1853. Eri Nakagawa gave a telling performance of this compelling music and a powerful one at that. After the initial theme, there are seven variations and sometimes a few hints of Brahms and Chopin. Performing entirely from

memory, Eri played expressively with a wide range of dynamics and she seemed to savour the magic moments in Clara Schumann’s evocative harmonies. In complete contrast, Sittichai Pengcharoen then played one of the solo violin sonatas by the Belgian violinist and composer Eugène Ysaÿe. His name is less well-known today but in his time he was regarded as “The King of the Violin”. Ysaÿe wrote the six sonatas in 1923 and some of them
reflect the characteristics of early twentieth century music. Each sonata was dedicated to one of Ysaÿe’s contemporary violinists. Sittichai Pengcharoen played the three-movement Sonata No. 4 in E minor which the composer dedicated to Fritz Kreisler. It’s a challenging work to play, yet Sittichai provided a confident and thoughtful performance. The highlight of the concert was undoubtedly Beethoven’s Sonata No. 9 for Piano and Violin in A major, known

Paris (AP) — A new exhibit of artifacts from the tomb of ancient Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun is opening in Paris more than 50 years after a similar exhibit set a visitor attendance record that still stands in the French capital. Organizers said the 150 items in the exhibit, titled “Tutankhamun, Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh”, are traveling outside Egypt for the last time before they go into a new museum near the Giza pyramids. The exhibit was assembled to commemorate the upcoming centenary of British archaeologist Howard Carter’s 1922 discovery of Tutankhamun’s intact tomb and the treasures it held. Paris, where the exhibit opened to the public last week at the Grande Halle de la Villette, is the second stop of a
10-city tour that started in Los Angeles. The artifacts include gilded wooden statuettes, including one of Tutankhamun riding a black panther, a miniature coffin for the pharaoh’s viscera painted in bright gold and blue, and jewelry decorated with lapis lazuli scarabs. Curator Tarek El Awady said the exhibit attempts to answer “the most common question about why ancient Egyptians buried treasures like this” with dead pharaohs. Tutankhamun might have used some items on display, like a pair of gloves, during his short life. He was 9-years-old when he became pharaoh and ruled ancient Egypt until he died at age 18 or 19. “Tutankhamun, Treasures of the Golden Pharaoh” is on view at Paris’ Grande Halle de la Villette from March 23 to Sept. 15.
almost universally by its nickname, “The Kreutzer Sonata.” Like the Schubert Fantasia, the Beethoven is known for both its technical challenges and its sheer length. The work might easily have become known as “The Bridgetower Sonata” because it was originally dedicated to George Bridgetower, a Polish-born violinist who lived and worked in Britain. On 24 th May 1803, Beethoven and Bridgetower gave the first performance of the sonata at the imposing Augarten Palace in the Leopoldstadt district of Vienna. The ink was barely dry on the paper and the violinist, who had never seen the work before was
sight-reading the frighteningly difficult solo part. During the second movement, Bridgetower had to peer over Beethoven’s shoulder to read the scruffy hand-written piano copy. The performance was probably not entirely faultless. However, after the concert Bridgetower allegedly insulted a woman who was an acquaintance of Beethoven. The composer was furious and broke off relations with Bridgetower. He instead dedicated the work to the violin virtuoso Rudolphe Kreutzer, who considered the sonata to be “outrageously unintelligible”. Kreutzer never played it, but the name stuck. Sittichai and Eri gave a terrific performance of the work and they impressed the audience with an impeccable sense of ensemble. The opening movement was tense and taught, full of raw energy and intensely rhythmic. The brooding slow movement with its increasingly difficult variations was beautifully judged. There were many magic moments. The two musicians launched into the Finale at a hair-raising tempo and managed to keep up the driving energy throughout the movement. It was a real edge-of-the-seat experience and Sittichai and Eri captivated the audience with brilliant and sparkling virtuosity. The closing moments were truly heroic and brought the work to a triumphant climax.

Requests for shoes, uniforms, stationary and glasses began to flood in, with 73 students requesting glasses in the first 2 months of the project. In 2019 we already have 72 children requesting glasses and we still have another 6 local Thai school yet to assess the needs. The process involves asking the students and teachers to identify those who potentially need glasses.
These children are then given a preliminary eye test using a simple eye chart by the Hand to Hand Foundation. These results are then passed onto Dr. Bu from Pattaya Optical who assesses which students need further examination. These children receive letters requesting their parents to take them to the Pattaya Optical shop where a thorough examination is done by fully trained optometrists. Those students who would benefit from glasses are then
placed on a list of needy students which is considered by the ‘Save A Child’s Eyes’ project. Each pair costs 700 baht which is approximately ¼ of the cost of the glasses. An evening of food, fun and entertainment was held at the Loft Pub in January where over 100,000 baht was raised to purchase glasses through the ‘Save a Child’s Eyes’ project. Pattaya siren weaves and sings woeful tales at PCEC
Rose telling tales of woe.
Rose (Shayachon R.) and her daughter Swan sang songs together and separately at the Sunday morning PCEC club meeting last week. But not right away. Rose first introduced herself and rolled through a litany of jobs she has held and families she has had. Raised in what Rose called a conservative home as the oldest of five siblings to a high ranking officer in the police force from the Northern Provinces, she was allowed to wander the world very naive to the dangers of it. Rose’s degree was in nursing, she graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in 1989. Since the starting salary for nurses was only 3750 baht per month, she was forced to work evenings in the bar scene, singing to make ends meet. She was obliged to work for four years in nursing to pay back her
After nursing and scuba diving, Rose did language training in English, organized singing gigs, did document translation and legal team coordination, worked as interpreter in court, did presentations on radio (96 FM), acted as MC for numerous organizations, was a condo manager and of course has done singing in entertainment ‘formats’. She has lived a varied life. She will soon be on the radio again; this time 95 FM. A second family was started with an American man named Andre, with whom she gave birth to her only child, Swan. Now that Rose is a single mom, Swan is the most important person in her life. Andre was plagued with numerous physical problems including a stroke, a heart attack and seizures. It was a difficult time in Rose’s life and at one point in the hospital a doctor gave Andre only two days to live. Rose, having none of it, nursed Andre back
to a state in which he could leave the hospital. She insists that what saved him were Centrum vitamins and many Chinese foot massages which she administered herself. During this time Rose’s finances were rocked when she paid out millions of baht to a woman she thought was the owner of the building in which she had established a business. After many expensive alterations, the real owner came in one day and asked Rose what she was doing in his building. Meanwhile, the

original renter, and scammer, had run off with the dough. Rose now looks back at her conservative upbringing as failing to prepare her for such an evil world. After rambling on about her husband’s further health issues and his trip back to America, Rose again promoted Centrum and natural medications as being better and more effective than doctors and hospitals. Rose also slipped in a plug for crypto-currency, showing receipts of her promised big payoffs she had received and
encouraging PCEC members to jump on the bandwagon. Finally she and her daughter sang a couple of songs each. Swan did a nice job on ‘The Show’ but stumbled somewhat on a more difficult song ‘When you were my man’: the range was just too much for her young voice. Rose finally sang two songs ‘This is My Life’, sung quite defiantly, and a better number for her, ‘Over the Rainbow”. The performance ended with more duetting with a man named Chris.

Ty trounces all opposition PSC Golf from Café Kronborg Monday, March 18, Plutaluang – Stableford A Flight (0-23) 1st Ty Anderson (12) 43pts 2nd Arne Max Pedersen (23) 33pts 3rd Richard Kubicki (11) 33pts B Flight (24+) 1st Jan Lovgreen (24) 33pts 2nd Kurt Sandgaard (33) 31pts 3rd Peter Hammond (30) 30pts Cafe Kronborg played Plutaluang East and South on Monday, which we haven’t played for some time and it soon became apparent why West and North is the favoured of the two courses. The condition of the fairways was as expected, not good, not bad, while some of the greens were having work done to them with unplayable areas which were unmarked. The rest of the putting surfaces were extremely tricky with the back 9 being a tad faster
than the front. All that being said, the low season green fee was a bargain and somewhat made up for occasional rough area. There were 2 flights with the A flight 0 to 23 and the B flight 24 and above and the A Flight winner and master of East and South was Ty Anderson with an incredible 43 points, 24 of which came on the front 9. This was a gross 77 off the stick, an exceptional day on these 18 holes. Second and third places were decided on countback with 2 mere mortals having 33 points, a full ten points behind Ty. Taking second was Arne Max Pedersen with 18 points on the back and third was Richard Kubicki, faltering on the back with 15. In B Flight the winner was Jan Lovgreen with 33 points, another mortal persons’ score. Second was Kurt Sandgaard with 31 points
Ty Anderson (left) with Jan Lovgreen (right) and Dave ‘The Admiral’ Richardson.
and in third place was Peter Hammond with 30 points. As the group was smaller due to the imminent end of the season, there were no near pins or long putts today.
Thursday, March 21, Greenwood Stableford A Flight (0-23) 1st Arne Max Pedersen (23) 38pts
Millar & Mashi sparkle at Crystal Bay PSC Golf from The Growling Swan Monday, March 18, Plutaluang – Stableford 1st Rod Weekes (19) 38pts 2nd Keith Buchanan (14) 38pts 3rd Martin Kempton (11) 37pts 4th Steve Younger (13) 36pts Near Pins: Rod Weekes, Patrick Poussier, Martin Kempton Long Putts: Patrick Poussier, Martin Kempton. Seventeen golfers took up the challenge today at Big Navy. The course was in good nick and offered plenty of run, bunkers were clean and raked and fairways tidy. The greens were found to be a little slow and somewhat difficult to master however. Our five groups teed off about 10min earlier than our allotted tee time, and can say we were not held up at all. Seventeen golfers insured that we would play the single flight with all novelties in play, plus the Bonus double up on two of the Par-3’s. Rod Weekes (a late inclusion) took the honours today. He and Keith Buchanan both returned with 38 points but it was Rod’s back nine
Sean Millar & Mashi Kaneta.
that got him the nod on countback. Third place went to Martin Kempton, with the final place on the podium going to Steve Younger.
Thursday, March 21, Crystal Bay Stableford Crystal Bay was up to its usual standard and in really good nick (it appears they are pumping a lot of water on the track). Although the weather was a little on the warm side, playing conditions were not too bad, a slight breeze did prevail
which certainly helped. We attacked the course from the yellow tees and with the numbers the way they were we were to pay “first past the post” only with all novelties in play. Sean Millar showed the way and his 44 points left no one in any doubt that he had a very good day. Mashi Kaneta got three near pins with the other one going to Keith Buchanan. Mashi also bagged a long putt on the ninth hole while Dave Maw did likewise on the eighteenth.
2nd Ty Anderson (12) 37pts 3 rd Henning Olsen (22) 36pts B Flight (24+) 1 st Kurt Sandgaard (33) 40pts 2nd Carole Kubicki (24) 31pts 3rd Karen Brown (31) 30pts
Near Pins: Henning Olsen Long Putts: Ty Anderson Cafe Kronborg played Greenwood B & C courses on Thursday, with both the A & B flight men playing off the yellow tees and the ladies playing off the red tees, which were only a short distance ahead. The course was in good condition with the greens a little longer than usual, making uphill into the grain putts very slow indeed. The A Flight winner was Arne Max Pedersen, continuing his excellent form with a superb 38 points. A total of 16 on the front nine was shored up with a storming 22 points on the harder C nine. Second with a solid 37 points was Ty Anderson,
another good score after his emphatic victory on Monday. Third was Henning Olsen with a handicap matching 36 points. In B Flight there was a bit of a conundrum as the 2 ladies playing today made the podium even though the yellow tees were only a few metres behind. Taking first place and saving Viking honour was Kurt Sandgaard with a sublime 40 points and the score of the day. Kurt was in a league of his own today, being 9 points ahead of second place which was taken by a somewhat surprised Carole Kubicki with 31 points. Third place was claimed by an equally surprised Karen Brown with 30 points.
Hole & Culloty smiling on St. Patrick’s Day The Tara Court Golf Society Sunday, March 17, Green Valley - Stableford As today was a special occasion for the Irish diaspora we had a change from our usual singles competition at Green Valley and played for the St Patrick’s Day Cup. The format was a four-ball better-ball which is something we never play on our usual days but is a nice change. The winners, Pat Culloty and Ken Hole, had an excellent forty-seven points for a clear two point win over second placed Kevyn Wright and Jerry Sweetnam with forty-five. We then had three pairs with forty-three points and here on the countback Joe McArdle and Joe Peters came third, Shaun Merriman and Nick Caulfield were fourth and Paul Pavloff and David Wright had to settle for fifth. We had two 2s today, from Shaun Merriman Ken Hole & Pat Culloty hold up the and Kevyn Wright.
Tuesday, March 19, Mt; Shadow - Stableford
St. Patrick’s Day Cup.
Thursday, March 21, A smaller field today and only one division Bangpra - Stableford
needed. With a nice breeze blowing we were away early and the course was very quiet. It is starting to dry out with some bare patches on some fairways and the greens are slower than normal and very inconsistent. Only player today beat his handicap and claimed 1st place, that being Nick Caulfield (H/cap 7) with 37 points. Second was decided on a countback with Rocky Hudson (18) beating playing partner Brian Agus (20) after both finished on 35 points. Fourth place also went to a countback with Ken Hobbs (30) edging Shaun Merriman (10) on 32 points each. Ted Morris & Rocky Hudson shared the 2’s pool today.
Bangpra was in excellent condition but the course was the winner today as none of our group came even near to playing to their handicaps. The best score we got wasfrom Jerry Sweetnam (10) who won with thirty two points and even that low score was two better than the second place Ted Murphy (25) with thirty points. We then had three players with twenty nine and here both Shaun Merriman and Rocky Hudson lost out on the countback to Nick Caulfield (7). Despite the small group and the difficult par threes here we still had two 2s today, coming from Shaun Merriman and Kevyn Wright.

Lambert on fire at Phoenix PSC Golf from the Billabong Bar
Monday, March 18, Phoenix Gold Stableford Phoenix Gold on Monday and with a somewhat smaller field than normal we were away on time in grand conditions, a nice breeze and a lot of cloud cover to keep the heat away. With just over a third of the players not scoring over 30 points it made the winners’ scores look very good. There was a countback between Glenn Smith and Brian Orr, both on 36 points, with Glenn taking second and Brian third. The winner Gerard Lambert had his best round for a long time and came in with an 86 off the stick for 40 points off his 18 handicap.
There were three 2s, coming from Rod Crosswell, Gerard Lambert and Brian Orr.
Friday, March 22, Burapha Stableford
Wednesday, March 20, Green Valley Stableford Green Valley’s irrigation system might be in need of an update as today I had a free drop on four occasions for casual water and the cause was not rain. The competition for places in the ladies competition was fierce and four players on 35 points did not get a mention. Miss May (H/cap 11), having more birdies – three than pars, lost out to Miss Nu (16) on the same score but with 19 points on the way home which included 7 pars and 1 birdie. Miss Noodle (14) started the round off well with 7 points in the
Noodle, Sasicha and Nu.
first 2 holes and another 7 points in the last 2 holes in her 38 points but three double bogies on the back nine meant she fell one short
Young on the mark at Pleasant Valley The Jomtien Golf Society Monday, March 18, Pleasant Valley Stableford Our first visit here for some considerable time and everyone was looking forward to the game today. It was an enjoyable round with the course in a good condition but our only moan was the first three holes had the tees too far forward. Two divisions out with the cut at 9-18 and 20+ and with 42 points Paul Young won division 1 while a 20/ 19 countback saw Bob Comartin take second ahead of Per Forsberg after they both came in with 40 points. Leo Adam topped the podium in division 2 with 37 points, Kari Aarnio was second on 36 and Peter Davies placed third with 30 points. Near pins went to (Div 1) Bob Comartin, Per Forsberg and Gareth Piccininn, and (Div 2) Kari Aarnio, John Carlin, Peter Davies and Paul Young. Two rollovers in both divisions and Bob Comartin birdied the 13th and in division 2 Paul Young the 5th.
Wednesday, March 20, Treasure Hill – Stableford A smaller turnout and only one division today and with 37 points Paul Butler beat
of the eventual winner, Miss Sasicha (21), who found a higher gear at the turn with 22 points to win the day. Auke Engelkes (12) had a poor start with only 2 points on the first 2 holes but the remaining seven holes accounted for 18 points and a 36 point total, the same score as Peter Thomas (19) but Peter had 19 on the back nine for third place. Tony Oakes (14), having received a jolt to
his system with an expensive bill for air conditioning repairs, compensated for that expense by taking second place on 37 points, 2 points behind his playing partner Jeff North (9) who had a very steady round with 39 points. For the 2s Ted Gardner did not bother having a birdie on the par threes for he eagled the 2nd for 4 points, the other 2s going to Miss Am, Miss Poopay, Auke Engelkes and Jeff North.
Burapha on a hot day and with 5 groups playing we got away to an early start and completed the round in under 3½ hours. The scoring was different as we were allocated the C and D loops, which are quite a bit more difficult than the preferred A and B loops. The course was in grand condition with greens that were a little slower than normal which reflected in the scores posted. There was a countback between Jack Piercefield and John Mills, a visitor from Perth Australia, with both scoring 32 points. Jack managed fourth place and John with the better back nine took third. Second spot went to the ever-consistent Dougie Crowe with 34 points off his 8 handicap, while the man of the moment Graham Beaumont scored a fine 35 points to take the top spot. There was only one 2, coming from Greig Ritchie.
Bailey rips it up at Bangpakong PSC Golf from the Tropical Golf Group Tuesday, March 19, Bangpakong – Stableford
Bob Comartin, Paul Sturgeon, Paul Young and Nik Evans.
John Carlin with an 18/17 countback for first place. Paul Young with a 14/13 back six countback edged Per Forsberg for third after they both scored 35 points and Paul Sturgeon finished fifth with 34. Only three wins in eight nearest the pins for Bob Comartin and Gareth Piccinin in division 1 and John Carlin in division 2. In the 2s today Nik Evans birdied the 6th and Gareth Piccininn the 17th and in division 2 a rollover to Khao Kheow on Monday.
Friday, March 22, Eastern Star Stableford We were back today to two divisions with the equal cut set at 9-16.8 and 17.0 + in division 2 and with 36 points Dicky Bates won division 2
ahead of Tony Thorne in second on 34 and John Carlin third with 31. There were then three 29-pointers fighting for fourth place and a 19/18/14 back nine countbacksaw Paul Butler take it over Glyn Evans and Ron Lavett. The Khao Yai boy Tim Hake beat Per Forsberg on an 18/17 back nine countback after two 33’s were returned in division 1 and then Bon Comartin with an 11/9 back six countback finished third, beating Gareth Piccininn after two 31-pointers. Near pins went to (Div 1) Bob Comartin and Gareth Piccininn (3), and (Div 2) John Carlin, Frank Kelly and Max Wilson. Gareth Piccininn birdied the 17th in division 1 and in division 2 there are three rollovers to next Friday.
It’s still high season for golf, and a good crowd of players took on Bangpakong Riverside which was in typically great condition but the fairways didn’t yield much roll. We had a total field of 27 players, with sixteen winners, spread over four flights. The top spot in A flight (0–12) went to Landis Brooks’ 38 points from his handicap of 5. Second went to Bill Steinman (12), also with 38 points, but losing on countback. Third was John Davis (12) with 37 points while Rob Brown had the top nine hole score among non placers with 20 points. In the B flight, (13–19) Alan Sullivan (14), was first with 41 points, Brian Parish (13) came second with 37 and Andre Van Dyk (16) placed third with 32. Bob Britton had the top nine hole score with 19 points. In the C flight (20-24), David Bailey (23) was first with a best of the day 45 points. Walter Baechli (22) came second with 38 and Graham Buckingham (23) took third on 36. Kae Dayton had the best nine score with 18 points. Roy Dayton (28) was first in the D flight (25 and up)
Landis Brooks, David Bailey, Alan Sullivan and Roy Dayton.
with 38 points. Karen Brown (31) came second with 33 points and Henry Wong (28) took third with 32 on countback over Barry Elphick. Barry did, however, have the best nine hole score with 18 points.
Friday, March 22, Treasure Hill – Stableford Treasure Hill is really a nice layout, but a real challenge. We did have some good scores today, with three players scoring better than their handicaps. We had a total field of 25 players and the top spot in A flight (0–13) was decided on countback, with Steve Truelove claiming first on 35 points from his handicap of 10. Second went to John Davis (12), also with 35 points but losing the countback
while in third was Brian Parish (12) with 33 and Rob Brown (5) fourth with 31 points. Landis Brooks had the top nine hole score among non placers with 16 points. In the B flight (14–23), Andre Van Dyk (16) was first with 34 points, Mashi Kaneta (15) came second on 30 and Mick Coghlan (19) third with 25 points. Frank Xin had the top nine hole score with only 13 points on countback over Brian Gabe. In the C flight (24 and up), Karen Brown (31) was first with 38 points, Carole Kubicki (24) and Barry Elphick (29) both tallied 37 points with Carole claiming second on countback and Roy Dayton (28) claimed fourth with 31 points. Don Carmody had the best nine score with 16 points.

Davies sails home at Riverside PSC Golf from the Pattaya Links Golf Society Monday, March 18, Bangpakong – Stableford A Flight (0-18) 1st Phil Davies (12) 42pts 2nd Derek Phillips (18) 38pts 3rd Chris Barker (11) 37pts B Flight (19+) 1st John Chelo (19) 36pts 2nd Richard Dobson (26) 36pts 3rd Barry Oats (28) 35pts Bangpakong Riverside welcomed the society on Monday where course conditions kept scores at a moderate level, with one exception, as did the fairways which were soft and the greens were more grainy than usual. In the second flight third place went to the elder statesman Barry Oats who finished on 35 points, one behind the leaders who were subjected to countback to decide the winner. John Chelo’s smile was broad as it was announced he had nudged Richard Dobson into second place. In the top flight third place went to Chris Barker on countback with 37 points, Stu Thompson being the
unlucky golfer to lose out. Derek Phillips took second with 38 points and Phil Davies was still on a “high” after the weekend which saw his beloved Wales win the Grand Slam in rugby on Saturday. He powered his way to forty-two points with very few putts, nailing everything within six to eight feet. Near pins went to Barry Horman (4), Darren Beavers (7), Pete Seil (13) and Richard Dobson (16). The best front nine (non winners) was recorded by Stu Thompson (19 points) and Connie Walsh took the award for the best back nine (non winners) with 20 points.
Wednesday, March 20, Khao Kheow Stableford A Flight (0-18) 1st Kevin McEntee (11) 34pts 2nd Ken Ishikawa (17) 33pts 3rd Paul Greaves (16) 33pts 4th Connie Walsh (13) 31pts B Flight (19+) 1st David Innes (19) 36pts 2nd Greg Gawron (19) 33pts 3rd John Anderson (29) 32pts 4th John Chelo (19) 31pts
Ken Ishikawa, on his final game this trip, beat Paul Greaves on countback at the 33 points mark, while Connie Walsh, also heading home, rounded out the four placings with 31 points. Near pins went to Ryan Thomas, Derek Phillips and Steve Turner. Consolation awards for best nines went to Huw Phillips and Masa Sugaya. Phil Davies (centre) with Masa Sugaya (left) and Barry Horman.
Check-in was efficient as usual here and we were happy to pay the Sports Day price of 800 baht green fee. All went well until we were into the second nine (B course) when suddenly that black clouds become crashing thunder and lightning, striking seemingly close to our groups. The storm abated almost as quickly as it came, and our group continued on to finish the round and hit the showers. In the end, of the 42 starters we finished with 30 completed scorecards, some soggy, and the rest N/R or lost.
A first timer at Links, David Innes, a miner from Western Australia topped the scoring with a hard earned 36 points to take out “B” flight and the Green Jacket. Second in that flight went to Greg Gawron on 33 points and then John Anderson scored his third 32 points in his last three games at KK. John Chelo made up the podium with 31 points. The best of the “A” flight was Kevin McEntee with 34 points, a very good score considering his low handicap and the trials of the day.
Friday, March 22, Pattaya C.C. – Stableford 1st Mike Tottenham (19) 40pts 2nd Larry Slattery (18) 38pts 3rd Darren Beavers (17) 38pts 4th Colin Smith (13) 35pts 5th Neils- Peter Kristensen (21) 35pts The society visited Pattaya Country Club on Friday to play a stableford competition on a course which is starting to show a little wear after a reasonably dry high season. Fairways were a little patchy and soft around the irrigation points with mid morning watering having little or no effect in the hot
conditions. Greens however, were still quite consistent. High scoring was not on the agenda, except for a couple of golfers. A field depleted by a half dozen regulars trekking out to Wangjuntr left 25 golfers competing in a single flight. Countback was invoked again with Niels-Peter Kristensen placed fifth on 35 points, Colin Smith’s back-nine advantage giving him fourth place. In third was Darren Beavers with 38 points and he saw Larry Slattery elbow himself into second with a better back nine. The winner was Aussie Mike Tottenham who showed his potential again with forty very solid points to take the win and the Green Jacket. Near pins went to Masa Sugaya (4), Chris Barker (7), Larry Slattery (12) and Colin Service (16). The consolation best front nine score ( non winners) was Len Jones’ 19 points and the back nine (non winners) was Nigel Harrison with 18 points on countback.
USA wins the Ryder Cup Traveller’s Rest Golf Group Monday, March 18, Crystal Bay – Stableford 1st Dave Cowper (10) 39pts 2nd Martin Burbidge (10) 37pts 3rd Nigel Bennett (17) 36pts We had mixed reports on the condition of Crystal Bay and we won’t be returning there any time soon. However, today’s winner Dave Cowper thoroughly enjoyed the course and produced two solid nines to finish with 39 points and secure his first TRGG number one spot. Whilst the boys were at the Bay, eight teams teed off on A & B courses at Burapha for the first round of the Ryder Cup. The defending champions South Korea got off to a flying start and took maximum points with a clean sweep.
Tuesday, March 19, Green Valley – Stableford 1st Al Marumoto (12) 39pts 2nd Terry Power (12) 36pts 3rd Bennie Moses (11) 36pts Al Marumoto creamed his first drive right down the middle off the fairway, looked over to his playing partners and said, “Today is going to be a good day.” Now most people who prophesize a good round after just one shot normally fall in a heap - not
so for Al as he continued smashing it down the middle, putted like a man possessed and walked off the eighteenth a clear winner with an excellent score of 39 points.
Wednesday, March 20, The Emerald – Stableford 1st Bill Reid (12) 40pts 2nd Al Marumoto (11) 35pts 3rd Roger Wilkinson (16) 35pts Bill Reid was having one of those days and whilst the rest of the field struggled, Bill was landing most greens in regulation and chalking up the three-pointers with consummate ease. Day two at the Ryder Cup and the South Koreans were stunned by the All American team who won every game and took all the available points. The USA also made their move and at the end of the days play it was looking like there were only two real contenders but mathematically any one of six teams could still win.

their prayers were answered when one of their countrymen, Chang Soung-Gueen, shot an incredible 43 points and was immediately seconded to their team. Wayne Cudjoe’s 37 points brought some interest from his fellow Americans but the USA and All American team captains decided to stick to their guns.
Friday, March 22, Burapha – Stableford 1st Neil Wilkinson (12) 43pts 2nd Bill Reid (11) 42pts
3rd Young Hyeon-Baek (12) 42pts Our daily competition teed off on A & B courses and posted some amazing scores as first, second and third places were all in excess of forty points. Emerging the winner was Neil Wilkinson who had the round of his life with a brilliant 43 points and he needed every one of those points as Bill Reid and Young Hyeon-Baek were also on fire with both players finishing on 42 points. It took a countback
to determine the minor places but Bill easily won it with an unbelievable 25 points on the back-nine. The final round of the Ryder Cup was played on C & D courses and all the teams got off to a great start. The South Koreans were quietly confident that they were still in with a chance as were the Barbarians and Australians but it turned out to be a two horse race. The USA and the All Americans, akin to the war of 1775, were once again doing battle but this time it wasn’t Yorktown, it was Burapha where the final siege took place. When the final shots were fired it was clear that the USA had won with 9.5 points ahead of the All Americans on 8. South Korea came in third with 6.5 points.
Saturday, March 23, Treasure Hill – Stableford 1st Sean Miller (27) 35pts 2nd John Welch (31) 34pts 3rd Billy Allan (21) 33pts We finished the week with Sean Miller taking first place at Treasure Hill with 35 points. John Welch was second, on 34 and Billy Allan made a rare appearance in the winner’s circle, taking third place with 33.

Lloyd signs off on top PSC Golf from The Bunker Boys Monday, March 18, Bangpra – Stableford 1st Mike Lloyd (18) 36pts 2nd Keith Smithson (4) 34pts 3rd Robby Watts (8) 34pts A nice surprise lay in store for the Bunker Boys at Bangpra as sports day pricing was in operation and a nice discount on the green fee was welcomed by all. When we got to the first tee we found several groups waiting to start but once we did tee off the round progressed at a decent pace with no hold-ups. The course was not in as good condition as we have come to expect and would have benefited greatly from the rain that threatened. The water catchment areas were at the lowest levels seen in a long time. In the last week of his short stay with us, Mike Lloyd continued to play at a high standard and secured first place with a score of thirtysix points. Second, went to Keith Smithson on thirtyfour, beating Robby Watts into third on countback. season field of eighteen for our midweek game at Eastern Star. The PSC had run out of vouchers and the course didn’t have any to purchase either, so a stalemate on the green fee was resolved after some serious negotiations, as always a bit of compromise on both sides did the trick. Eastern Star is a difficult course at the best of times but was even more so today with a strong wind blowing. Overall the course was in decent condition although some found the greens very tricky. Very few people on the course meant a nice quick round was had by all. Despite missing four puts from within six feet (three for birdie), Michael Brett did

Lasonder strikes gold at Treasure Hill PSC Golf from Siam Country Resort Pattaya
Jim Payne & Willem Lasonder.
Tuesday, March 19, Treasure Hill Stableford
Thursday, March 21, Crystal Bay Stableford
On Tuesday we went with 3 groups to Treasure Hill where the course was in good condition but with now many dry spots outside the fairways. The weather was warm with a good breeze. Willem Lasonder was in good form today and won with 39 points. He had an exciting battle with Ty Andersen who played a very good back nine apart from the final hole and finished second on 36 points. Taking third spot was Dave Smith with 32 on his card. Near pins went to Paddy Devereux, Dave Smith, Jonathan Pratt and Stan Rees.
Crystal Bay was our venue on Thursday where we played the C & B course. It was again a warm sunny day with a strong breeze. There was a big difference between the greens of the B & C courses, the former being quite fast, but the C-course greens ran very slow. We had moderate scores today and Jim Payne was the best with 34 points while in second place was Willem Lasonder. Jonathan Pratt snared the only near pin award won on the day.

Mankad decision in IPL divides cricket fans around world New Dehli, India (AP) There are contentious issues in cricket that, it seems, just aren’t cricket. Take for instance one particular run out, within the laws of the game but against some people’s concept of the spirit of cricket, in the Indian Premier League that has divided fans, former players and experts across the world. It’s called a Mankad — named after the first player to do it in an international match in 1947. This week Kings XI Punjab skipper Ravi Ashwin ran into bowl but didn’t release the ball, instead taking off the bails at the non-striker’s end of the pitch while Rajasthan Royals batter Jos Buttler was out of his crease. The Indian Premier League posted the full video online under the questions: Within the rules of the game? Fair play? Would you have done it ? In the video, there’s some lively discussion between Ashwin and the English batsman Buttler on the field while the decision was referred to the TV umpire. Respected international cricket analyst Harsha Bhogle said it was within the laws of the game for the bowler to run out a batter backing up at the non-striker’s end, and there was no need for the bowler to warn the batter. Bhogle was commentating on the game for TV. His

co-commentator described Ashwin’s run out as a “terrible, terrible gesture.” “Lots of drama on the Buttler run-out,” Bhogle later posted on Twitter. “He was livid but the law and the advisory on it is clear. The bowler is within his right to run a player out at the nonstriker’s end if he is out of his crease.” It sparked immediate debate among other former cricketers. Some, such as exAustralia legspinner Shane Warne, describing it as “disgraceful and embarrassing,” while others could see no problem with the decision. “As captain of your side you set the standard of the way the team wants to play and what the team stands for!” Warne posted on Twitter,
adding that Ashwin would be remembered for it.” Under the old more-or-less unwritten rules, a bowler was supposed to warn a batter at the non-striker’s end the first time a Mankad run out was an option in cases where the runner was leaving the crease too early. The International Cricket Council codified the rule to reflect the bowler didn’t need to warn a batter, so long as the bowler abided by certain conditions. What is still debatable is whether a bowler can lure the non-striker into leaving the crease early by faking a bowl. Ashwin’s team won, and he said in a later interview that it wasn’t a pre-determined idea to run out Buttler.
“Look, it was very instinctive on my part. It was not planned or anything like that,” Ashwin said. “It’s there within the rules of the game. I don’t know where the understanding of spirit of the game comes from because quite naturally, if it’s there in the rules, it’s there.” In an International Cricket Council poll on Twitter, 72 percent of the 31,417 voters said they didn’t believe Ashwin did the right thing. Former England captain Michael Vaughan posted the question to those supporting Ashwin’s move , if it had been Indian star Virat Kohli batting would they think it was a good idea? “I would say to all Indian ex-players/pundits who are supportive of what R Ashwin did ... If @imVkohli was batting would you be so supportive !!???” Rajasthan Royals head coach Paddy Upton said in a postmatch TV interview Ashwin’s “actions tonight speak for him and represent him.” “When I looked in the eyes of his teammates, I’m not sure if it represented his teammates,” Upton said. “I think we’ll leave it up to the IPL fans to decide if that’s the kind of thing they want to see. We’ll leave it up to the cricket world to judge Ashwin’s actions tonight. “We’re here to play cricket and entertain the fans and be good role models for people who love the game.”
Patriots’ tight end Rob Gronkowski announces retirement Kyle Hightower Boston (AP) —New England Patriots’ fun-loving, touchdown-spiking tight end Rob Gronkowski announced last Sunday that he is retiring from the NFL after nine mostly dominant, Super Bowl-filled seasons. The four-time All-Pro posted his decision on Instagram, saying that a few months shy of his 30th birthday “it’s time to move forward and move forward with a big smile.” “It all started at 20 years old on stage at the NFL draft when my dream came true, and now here I am about to turn 30 in a few months with a decision I feel is the biggest of my life so far,” Gronkowski wrote in his post. “I will be retiring from the game of football today.” Drew Rosenhaus, Gronkowski’s agent, confirmed his client’s decision to retire. World Wai Kru Muay Thai Ceremony attracts record numbers to Ayutthaya The 15th World Wai Kru Muay Thai Ceremony attracted a record number of participants to Ayutthaya with over 1,500 Muay Thai practitioners from 70 countries attending the event from 16 to 17 March. This eclipsed the largest previous attendance of over 1,400 participants in 2017. The Ayutthaya Historical Park was a hive of activity with multiple events at Wat Langkha Khao and the sacred Wai Kru ceremony held at Wat Mahathat, with the temple’s ruins serving as a dramatic backdrop. Similar to religious pilgrimages, Muay Thai practitioners should participate in the annual World Wai Kru Muay Thai Ceremony at least once in their lifetime. tournament where both teams, after losing several matches, were playing not to be named the worst performing team of the competition. No sooner had the whistle been blown to start the match when the rain started to pour, and the downpour continued until well after the match was over.
There was a lot of talent on both sides, including one Burapha player who is a member of the Thailand national under-15 side. After two halves the final score was 7-6 to the visitors, but with the promise of a return match the boys from the Children’s Home are hoping that the next game will go in their favour.

Four of the Porsches were the 911 GT2 RS model, a variant for which production had stopped. It was not solely a Porsche Parade as other vehicles on the ill-fated ship included 2,000 brand-new Audis. There is no truth to the rumor that insurance company executives have been jumping out top floor windows. A company statement was given, with “Porsche Brasil confirmed that 37 of its new cars, in route from Hamburg, Germany, to Santos, Brazil, were aboard the vessel Grande America that suffered a maritime incident near the coast of Brest, France, on March 12, 2019. wouldn’t be possible to give you another car,” the letter reads in Portuguese. “But, due to the nature of the situation, and considering that you’re a loyal and highly valuable customer for our brand, Porsche has decided to resume the GT2 RS production in Germany, and your vehicle will be produced in April, with delivery scheduled for June.”

But the war hero did not die for nothing. The neurosurgeon who attended Lawrence could see that motorcycle deaths were from brain injuries. He then began to promote the idea of helmets. After everyone began to wear a helmet, the death rates for motorcycle riders fell dramatically. In most developed countries there are laws covering helmet usage, making wearing compulsory, except in
Thailand where the majority ignore the laws, and the police don’t apply the laws equally. So what are we left with? Last New Year holidays, 80 percent of the fatalities were motorcycle riders. And they were not wearing helmets, were they? Another interesting statistic – you are 28 times more likely to be killed riding a motorcycle than traveling in a car or pick-up. So what to do? Firstly, buy a good quality helmet. Secondly always wear it. Thirdly replace it every 3-5 years even if it looks all right. This way you will not be part of the 80 percent.

Since then I have always had good quality helmets which have saved me on a few occasions. However, motorcycles and helmets go back for many years until on May 19, 1935 (that’s 80 odd years ago), the famous British World War I hero known as “Lawrence of

Calif. (AP) — Tesla unveiled a new all-electric SUV last week that the automaker hopes will win over consumers looking for an allelectric alternative in the most popular segment of the auto market. Cheers from a hangar-packed crowd of Tesla customers, employees and members of the media welcomed a blue Model Y as it rolled out onto a stage next to the automaker’s other models. “It has the functionality of an SUV, but it will ride like a sports car,” CEO Elon Musk told the crowd. “This thing will be really tight on corners and we expect it will be the safest midsize SUV in the world by far.” The Model Y seats seven and has a panoramic glass roof and a 38-centimeter touchscreen interface for accessing all the car’s controls. The all-electric, mid-size SUV will start at USD 39,000 for the standard range version, which the company said can go 370 kilometers on a single charge. The longrange model, which starts at USD 47,000, has a range of up to 483 kilometers on a single charge - less range than the Model 3. A dual-motor, all-wheel drive version of the Model Y starts at USD 51,000 while the performance version of the car, which boasts acceleration of 0-60 mph (97 kph) in as little as 3.5 seconds and a top speed of up to 241 kph, starts at USD60,000. Tesla got a huge boost toward ensuring its survival with the 2017 debut of its Model 3 sedan, but an SUV could have even more mass appeal, given how popular SUVs have become in the U.S., Europe and Canada. The U.S. market share for SUVs, crossovers, vans and pickup trucks stood at 69 percent in January, up from just 48.5 percent a decade ago, according to the research firm IHS Markit. But most SUVs still run on gasoline (or diesel), leaving Tesla to cater to consumers looking for an all-electric alternative. The Model Y’s main competition in this still-nascent market is likely to be the Mercedes-Benz EQC, and to a lesser extent, the Jaguar IPace, according to the research firm LMC Automotive.
Tesla Model Y.
“This could be Tesla’s most profitable vehicle, with the giant asterisk that the company doesn’t do some of the dumb things it has in the past,” said Gartner analyst Mike Ramsey. Many of Tesla’s past follies have been tied to Musk’s penchants for making grandiose promises that the company hasn’t been able to keep in terms of production, delivery and execution. Production of the Model 3 quickly fell behind schedule as Tesla struggled to come up with adequate manufacturing capacity and it took much longer than anticipated to lower the sedan’s starting price to the $35,000 level that Musk had been promoting. Instead, the lowest priced version of the Model 3 had been selling for $43,000 until a couple weeks ago when Tesla reached the promised price point by laying off thousands of workers and imposing other cost-cutting measures. Overseeing the ramp-up of Model 3’s production nearly drove Musk to exhaustion last year, a factor that may have contributed to a mystifying pattern of behavior that included tweeting about having lined up the financing for a potential buyout of Tesla. That misleading statement jeopardized his job and resulted in a $40 million settlement with stock market regulators. Musk alluded to the troubled production of the Model 3 during his remarks to the crowd Thursday night. “Because of extreme challenges with the Model 3 production, we have to basically allocate all resources to Model 3 production, because otherwise we’re going to die,” Musk said with a chuckle, eliciting laughs from the crowd.
He then added: “2018 probably felt like aging five years in one. It was really intense.” Tesla expects to deliver the performance, long range, rear-wheel drive and dualmotor, all-wheel drive versions of the Model Y in the fall of 2020. The standard version of the Model Y is expected to roll out in the spring of 2021. As with all electric vehicles, the distance that the Model Y can cover on a fully charged battery is likely to be one of its key selling points - or downsides. Tesla pegged the Model Y’s range at up to 300 miles compared to 325 miles for the Model 3. Tesla is hoping there will pent-up demand for the Model Y, nearly four years after Musk first began touting the company’s plans to make an SUV. Bringing in early down payments for the vehicles would help Tesla generate the cash it needs to repay nearly $1.7 billion in loans that come due within the next 16 months. The company began the year with about $11 billion in debt and $3.7 billion in cash, but those figures presumably fell recently when it repaid about $920 million in bonds. Another $566 million in notes are scheduled to be repaid this November followed a $1.1 billion credit line in June 2020. Consumers who plop down their deposits for the Model Y may have to cross their fingers for their vehicles to be delivered on schedule. Tesla’s recurring production and delivery problems have resulted in consumers having to wait longer than they were originally told. Musk now says Tesla has worked out those issues. New piggy banks for lossleader Model Y.

Are you “Imm” yet? We took our first trip to the new Terminal 21 last week and restaurants are certainly strongly represented. However, there is only one restaurant where you’ll be “Imm”. Students of the Thai language will know that “Imm” stands for “full” or satiated, and Imm restaurant promises you will be Imm. The Terminal 21, complete with two planes lined up on the forecourt, is a crowded shopping center, and for first timers finding any particular place can be a hassle. To help you find Imm, it is on the third floor across from the Golden Gate Bridge in the center. The restaurant itself is quite large, with murals depicting country restaurants from 100 years ago. I was very taken with the mural showing the old man making coffee and a group playing Mah Jong. Another mural has a noodle stall being looked after by a rather large lady.
Imm’s pièce de résistance, the seafood hot plate doused with their secret recipe home-made sauce.
The security gates are modeled on the style you see in Bangkok’s China Town, and the more you look into it, the more it has Chinese influence. Along the back wall is a cocktail bar, and behind that is the spotless kitchen, which I inspected.
Fried whiting fish with yellow ginger tastes as good as it looks.
Well padded high-backed chairs surround large tables and friendly service staff are ready to assist you with the ordering of food. The menu will surprise you. In glorious photographic Technicolor, you can see exactly what you are going to get. We ordered a number of dishes to try and get a handle on the cuisine. While perusing the menu we enjoyed a Heineken beer (B. 100), while other local beers are B.95. Appetizers are generally B. 150-180 and include fishcakes (father’s recipe) and fried pork with fish sauce. A couple of pages of plated (single) dishes (B. 150-220)
offer items such as drunken spaghetti, pork or chicken steak (B. 220). Some spicy items follow in a tom yum soups and salads section. Traditional stir fries are mainly B. 160-280. Deep fries are next (B. 170-280) including squid fritters with garlic. Two pages of soups came next with a tom kha gai at the top, but very spicy dishes after that. Finally there are some noodle items (B. 80-100) with a traditional Chonburi style pork noodle soup, made to the original recipe. This is rounded up by some herb drinks (B. 65-75) and cocktails and beers. I began with the curried fish balls on bamboo skewers, not spicy and very more-ish. Another of the early dishes was a fried cabbage with fish sauce (B. 160). The main dish followed which was a hot plate seafood featuring crab, mussel, prawn and sweet corn all doused with their home-made sauce, which had a coconut flavor to it. Another popular dish was the fried whiting fish with yellow ginger. This was followed by a green curry dried duck meat in traditional style (B. 280). However, the hot plate kept most of the Dining Out team quiet! Imm is a welcome addition to our local restaurants. Thai food with some genuine history behind it. We all
Traditional fried cabbage with fish sauce.
tried the different dishes on order, with the Grilled sweet curry fish ball with herbs (B. 180) being my dish of the evening, whilst the others went for the sweet and sour hot seafood plate on an introductory special at B. 1,290 with enough for four.
English is not the main language, but the staff will help you with choices. Imm, Terminal 21, 3rd floor (Golden Gate Bridge level), open every day from 11.00 am to 11.00 pm, plenty of parking. For reservations tel. 095 708 5502.
A comfortable eating place.

Grilled cheesy chicken Chicken is a favorite with most dinner guests and this week’s recipe is a stunner. If you like an “Asian” flavor to it, you can substitute coriander for the parsley. One important feature with all chicken dishes is not to overcook, otherwise the chicken slices can get very tough and rubbery. I recommend chicken breast fillets without the skin and slice into bite-sized pieces.
Ingredients Serves 4 Chicken breast fillets 500gm Garlic, chopped 2 cloves Onions, diced ½ cup Tomatoes, peeled and diced 2 large Olive Oil 2 tbspns Bread Crumbs ½ cup White Wine ½ cup Lemon Juice 2 tspns Salt and Ground black pepper to taste Chopped Parsley Parmesan cheese grated ½ cup
Cooking Method In a large skillet, sauté onions and garlic in olive oil until golden. Add the chicken breast slices and sauté for 2 minutes, then add white wine, tomatoes and lemon juice and sauté for 5 more minutes, constantly moving the skillet to avoid burning or sticking to the pan. Now add salt and pepper to taste, then add bread crumbs and Parmesan cheese and sauté for 2 more minutes. Serve over a bed of rice or noodles and sprinkle with the chopped parsley.

VOL. XXVII No. 13
Fitz Club hosts 5th World Tour Soft Tennis Championships
Jetsada Homklin
The inaugural Takhiantia motocross race day proved popular with participants and spectators.
Takhiantia residents were urged to exercise and get dirty at the subdistrict’s first motocross race day. The municipality’s Manop Prakobtham opened the March 17 event at Takhiantia Field. The competition was split into 27 brackets that gave everyone a chance to participate. Manop said motorcross is an increasingly popular sport, so the subdistrict organized an event to encourage locals to get out and exercise and do things together. Organizers Somchai Boonchan and Witoon Intieng charged an application fee of 400-500 baht with proceeds going to the subdistrict’s education fund. Racers compete during the qualifying rounds.
Players from 10 countries participated in the 5th AGEL World Tour Soft Tennis Championship from March 5-9.

The Soft Tennis Association of Thailand also took this opportunity to select the national athletes who will participate in the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games which will be held in the Philippines at the end of this year.
