Asalaha Bucha and Khao Pansaa next week Next week marks the beginning of Buddhist Lent with two of the most important religious days on the Thai calendar, Asalaha Bucha and Khao Pansaa, July 16 and 17. Khao Pansaa marks the start of the monks’ rains retreat, during which they stay inside temple grounds so as not to trample crops during the rainy season. Candles are seen as a way to provide monks enlightenment during their prayers and candle parades are popular. As these are important Buddhist holidays, bars, restaurants and entertainment venues are barred from selling alcohol on both days. From 12.01 a.m. July 16 until midnight July 17, it is against the law for businesses to

Road workers knocked out telephone and internet service to about 2,500 TOT customers when diggers cut the utility’s trunk line on Central Road. TOT said service will be interrupted for up to three weeks, as the cable cut July 3 by a Provincial Electricity Authority work crew was old copper wire. TOT customer service representative Radchadakorn Boonkor said the company was rerouting customers’ connections through its cellular network. The PEA was ripping up the Central Road to lay new underground equipment when workers sliced through the cable at the intersection of Central Road and Soi 14. Customers from Central to South Pattaya are affected, although businesses as far north as the Dusit Thani

Hotel also lost service. While it supplies virtually all telephone landlines, TOT is not a major player in the consumer internet space. It is, however, a major provider for commercial internet and businesses from Pattaya Memorial and International hospitals to the Hard Rock Hotel are impacted. The line cut provides an opportunity for TOT to upgrade

its infrastructure. The cable that was cut was an older copper line. The utility has been transitioning to fiber-optic cables and, now forced to repair, TOT said the line may be replaced instead of repaired. PEA’s project manager Nawachinnanat Wuthwachinsa accepted responsibility for the outage, saying the contractor will pay TOT for the repairs.

Ekasit Ngampichet (inset), president of the Pattaya Business & Tourism Association, said the strong baht is taking its toll on Pattaya tourism.

Warapun Jaikusol The strong baht is taking its toll on Pattaya tourism as fewer foreign tourists come to Thailand and more Thais flex their spending power overseas instead of on the Eastern Seaboard. Ekasit Ngampichet, president of the Pattaya Business & Tourism Association, July 1 blamed the beefy baht – which appreciated more than 5 percent against the U.S. dollar in the first half – on the decline in Chinese tour groups. Ekasit said the strong currency has also made it cheaper for

Thais to travel overseas so many domestic tourists who might come to Pattaya are instead heading aboard. The baht has been Asia’s best performing currency in 2019, supported mainly by the opposing monetary policies of the Thai and American central banks. The Bank of Thailand hiked its benchmark policy rate in December and has remained neutral throughout the year. The U.S. Federal Reserve, meanwhile, is leaning toward cutting interest rates, which is pushing down the dollar.

Thailand’s export and tourism industries also generate a large current-account surplus, which exerts upward pressure on the baht. British nationals have seen the pound decline even faster against the baht due to the economic fallout from the Brexit quagmire. Ekasit said hoteliers need to reduce room rates to offset the rise in the baht and create more interesting tour packages. But he warned that longterm room-rate cuts will damage the industry and suggested the government should step in with subsidies.

A drunk man stabbed his estranged girlfriend when she refused to take him back, police said. Wassana Ucham, 34, suffered serious wounds to the stomach in the July 2 attack at her house on Boonsamphan Soi 8. Thanawat Muangwong, 49, was waiting for police and surrendered when they arrived. Officers said he confessed that he’d stabbed his girlfriend after she broke up with him and refused to reconcile. He said they’d often argued about her chatting to other men on online messaging apps.

Najomtien beach fouled again by sewage at that spot with officials in May blaming a broken pump amid promises to solve the subdistrict’s sewage problem by hooking up its system to Pattaya’s. That has yet to happen. Mayor Sompong Sainapa promised at the time to routinely pump sewage out of the pipes and lay sandbags to protect the beach. The bags were laid and forgotten and the pumping forgotten. Workers now covered the drainage pipe with a steel plate while officials resume talks with Pattaya to take the sewage off their hands. Damaged sandbags collapsed under the assault from several storms and smelly black water poured on to the sand in Najomtien. Again.

All she had to do was loan him $50,000 to pay the transfer fee. She did and then her “doctor” friend disappeared. On June 24 she went to Nongprue Police. Investigators discovered a Thai woman in disguise hitting various ATMs in the Pattaya area. They tracked her back to Amujiogu and police got warrants to search two properties in Plutaluang. Police said Amujiogu and Wadsana were working for an overseas fraud gang for two years and collecting 5 percent of every take. Her Royal Highness Princess Soamsawali Krom Muen Suddhanarinatha was born on July 13, 1957 at Guy’s Hospital in London, England. She is the eldest child of Mom Rajawongse Adulyakit Kitiyakara (her father was an elder brother of Queen Sirikit of Thailand) and Thanpuying Bandhu Savali Kitiyakara (Princess Bandhu Savali Yugala). She has one younger sister, Mom Luang Sarali Kitiyakara, born April 8, 1966. Her father was the second child of Prince Nakkhatra Mangkala Kitiyakara, the Prince of Chantaburi II and Mom Luang Bua Sanidvongs. Her mother was daughter of Prince Bhanubandhu Yugala and Mom Luang Soiraya Sanidvongs. She first attended the primary level at Chitralada School, then moved to Chiang Mai with her father when he was a judge at the Chiang Mai Court. She moved to study at Regina Coeli College, the all-girls academy in Chiang Mai in 1967.

Trash bins now, benches later for Chak Nok Park Jetsada Homklin Nongprue will immediately place trash cans around the subdistrict’s new Chak Nok Reservoir Park, but benches and weed barriers will have to wait, Mayor Mai Chaiyanit said. Users of the recently opened 59-million-baht park complained that Nongprue spent the money, but didn’t finish the job, leaving park visitors no place to sit along the lake and no place to dump their trash. Even worse, the lake was already polluted with weeds.

Mai said July 6 that Environment Department staffers will place trash bins around the park in “a few days”. However, the benches will not come until next fiscal year as the subdistrict is out of money. In addition to funds for seats, Nongprue also must request additional money for buoys and barriers to keep weeds from overwhelming the reservoir’s edge. For now, community cleanups will have to do, Mai said. The first one will take place July 26.

Work begins to revive Yim Yom Beach

Renovation work at Yim Yom Beach has begun as promised earlier this week.

Renovation work at Yim Yom Beach has begun as promised earlier this week. Pattaya maintenance chief Puttiset Charoenpoj and Narong Kunpakdee of the Environment Department oversaw work crews who used heavy machinery to adjust the surface of the sand by creating a 20-meter slope across the entire beachfront. In addition, a basket truck was brought in so workers could prune trees. The last time Pattaya made a serious effort at beautifying the small and often neglected beach was August 2018 when it removed rubble

and debris left behind by the military when it demolished encroaching buildings illegally erected there. Since then Yim Yom has been battered by storms, become a campground for homeless people and an ad hoc garbage dumpsite. About 1,000 sq. meters have never been improved and Pattana first ordered the Environment Department to cut the grass and remove the trash. They then must work with the Engineering Department to recover sand sucked out to sea and rebuild the beach in about 1,500 sq. meters. (PCPR)

Restored Mission Control comes alive 50 years after Apollo Marcia Dunn Houston (AP) — Gone is the haze of cigarette, cigar and pipe smoke. Gone are the coffee, soda and pizza stains. With only a few exceptions, NASA’s Apolloera Mission Control has been restored to the way it looked 50 years ago when two men landed on the moon. It gets the stamp of approval from retired flight director Gene Kranz, a man for whom failure — or even a minor oversight — is never an option. Seated at the console where he ruled over Apollo 11, Apollo 13 and so many other astronaut missions, Kranz pointed out that a phone was missing behind him. And he said the air vents used to be black from all the smoke, not sparkly clean like they are now. Those couple of details aside, Kranz could close, then open his eyes, and transport himself back to July 20, 1969, and Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin’s momentous moon landing.

Work continues inside the mission control room being restored to replicate the Apollo mission era for the 50th anniversary of the Apollo moon landing at the NASA Johnson Space Center in Houston. (AP Photo/Michael Wyke)

“When I sit down here and I’m in the chair at the console ... I hear these words, ‘Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed,’” Kranz said during a sneak preview at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. With all the empty seats, the room reminds him of a shift change when flight controllers would hit the restroom.

“It’s just nice to see the thing come alive again,” said Kranz, who titled his autobiography, “Failure is Not an Option.” Friday’s grand opening — just three weeks shy of the 50th anniversary of humanity’s first otherworldly footsteps — culminates years of work and millions in donations. It opened to the public Monday.

Meticulously recreated down to the tan carpeting, gray-green wallpaper, white ceiling panels, woven-cushioned seats, amber glass ashtrays and retro coffee cups, Project Apollo’s Mission Operations Control Room never looked — or smelled — so good. The goal was “to capture the look and feel of July of ’69,” said NASA’s restoration project manager Jim Thornton. “The place is designated a National Historic Landmark,” he said. “It’s not for the brick and mortar of the building, it’s for the amazing feats that happened inside of the building.” Johnson’s historic preservation officer, Sandra Tetley, strove for accuracy. Her quest began in 2013, after the room had fallen into neglect. It was last used for space shuttle flights in the 1990s, then abandoned and opened to tourists. The restoration effort finally got traction in 2017. The room was closed, and construction began. More than $5 million was raised, most of it donations. The city of Webster across the street kicked in $3.5 million. Tetley and her team interviewed flight controllers and directors now in their 70s and 80s. They pored through old pictures and brought in specialists in paint, wallpaper, carpeting, electricity and upholstery. Original swatches of

carpet and wallpaper and an original ceiling tile turned up. Intent on authenticity, they scoured eBay and vintage shops for ashtrays and cups and turned to 3D-laser printing to recreate lids for the back-of-the-seat ashtrays in the glassed-in visitors’ section overlooking the control room. Old binders for reams of paper were collected. Seat cushions were handwoven. Ceiling tiles were hand stamped. Carpeting was custom ordered with special tufting and extra yarn, then cut into 28-inch squares. The restoration team wanted a livedin look for the carpet and chose a shade reflecting years of nicotine discoloring. And yes, Kranz got his missing rotary-dial wall phone. “I fought for everything,” Tetley said. “But we’re getting everything we want to make it just completely historically accurate.”

replaced the original overhead fluorescent lights that had faded the mission medallions on the walls. With the International Space Station’s Mission Control running 24/7 one floor down and work for future moonshots going on all around, Thornton said it was challenging to create a museum. But the painstaking work paid off. Some Apollo flight controllers were so moved at seeing the restored room that they teared up. “Then we know that we’ve done it right,” Tetley said. There’s one artifact, though, that doesn’t fit July 1969. Following their 1970 aborted moon-landing mission, Apollo 13’s Jim Lovell, Fred Haise and Jack Swigert presented a mirror from their spacecraft to Kranz and the rest of the control team. Ever since, the mirror had hung on a plaque above the room’s water fountain “to ‘reflect the image’ of the people in Mission Control

The green consoles were trucked to the Cosmosphere museum in Hutchinson, Kansas, for months of rehab. Cigarette butts were dug out of the consoles, along with gum wrappers and papers. Modern LED lights and flat screens were installed to bring the consoles alive with images and flashing buttons; big screens up front will show key footage from the Apollo 11 mission. “We’re using technology to make it look old, basically,” Tetley explained. who got us back!” Removed during the restoration, it’s now back in its original spot. Kranz, 85, still looms large in the hot seat, where he oversaw the Eagle’s landing. “It was just absolutely our day, our time, our place,” he said. The flight controllers meet every year to celebrate the day, although their numbers are dwindling. They’re proud to have helped resuscitate their Mission Control: “Part of our legacy we’re going to leave for the next generation.”

Influenza and the WHO I am no great lover of the World Health Organization (WHO). I have to query the decision to make Zimbabwe’s despot the ambassador? I do also believe that the WHO “needs” epidemics to generate funding, to keep going. But then, I may be an old skeptic. Here are some of the WHO “killer” epidemics. We should not forget the panic with the Swine flu (also H1N1) a few years ago. Bulletins from the WHO every day added to the panic. The word “pandemic” instills fear and even hysteria. Where WHO let itself and us down was the fact that WHO did not tell the media that the immediate danger of viral infections has two requirements – how easily it passes from one host to another and how lethal is the ensuing infection. The ‘pandemic level 6’ only referred to the contagious nature of the virus and H1N1 is certainly highly contagious. However, with only around 4000 deaths in the world from that 2009 Swine Flu virus, just how lethal was it, when the seasonal flu kills 36,000 people each year just in the US alone, and 200-300 people in Thailand? Read those numbers again – 200-300 people from the seasonal flu in Thailand! That’s from the “nothing out of the ordinary” flu! Right, what can you do about avoiding a full-blown influenza infection this year? Quite simply, flu vaccination can keep you from getting sick from flu. Protecting yourself from flu also protects the people around you who are more vulnerable to serious flu illness. That’s the contagious nature again.

Flu vaccination can help protect people who are at greater risk of getting seriously ill from flu, like older adults, people with chronic health conditions and young children. Flu vaccination may also make your illness milder if you do fall ill. Flu vaccination can reduce the risk of more serious flu outcomes, like hospitalizations and deaths. A recent study showed that flu vaccine reduced children’s risk of flu-related pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) admission by 74 percent during flu seasons from 2010-2012. Yes, a 74 percent reduction. One study showed that flu vaccination was associated with a 71 percent reduction in flu-related hospitalizations among adults of all ages and a 77 percent reduction among adults 50 years of age and older during the 2011-2012 flu season. Flu vaccination is an important preventive tool for people with chronic health conditions. Vaccination was associated with lower rates of some cardiac events among people with heart disease, especially among those who had had a cardiac event in the past year. Flu vaccination also has been shown to be associated with reduced hospitalizations among people with diabetes (79 percent) and chronic lung disease (52 percent). Vaccination helps protect pregnant women and their babies for up to 6 months after they are born. One study

showed that giving flu vaccine to pregnant women was 92 percent effective in preventing hospitalization of infants for flu. Other studies have shown that vaccination can reduce the risk of flu-related hospitalizations in older adults. A study that looked at flu vaccine effectiveness over the course of three flu seasons estimated that flu vaccination lowered the risk of hospitalizations by 61 percent in people 50 years of age and older. There are special vaccination instructions for children aged 6 months through to eight years of age as some children require two doses of influenza vaccine. Children in this age group who are getting vaccinated for the first time, as well as some who have been vaccinated previously, will need two doses. Your child’s health care provider can tell you whether two doses are recommended for your child. A complicating factor comes with the annual make-up of the actual vaccine itself. Since the viral strains dominant in any particular year can change, this does mean you should top up your immune status with an annual jab. In some quarters there is still resistance to influenza immunization as well as the childhood vaccinations, but to be honest, I cannot understand why. Sure, there are risks involved with immunization, but those risks are very, very small compared to the risks in getting the flu.

Daily HIV prevention pill urged for healthy people at risk Lauran Neergaard Washington (AP) — Doctors should offer a daily HIV prevention pill to healthy people who are at high risk of getting infected with the virus, an influential health care panel has recommended. The new guidelines aim to help cut the nearly 40,000 new HIV infections in the U.S. each year. Screening people for the HIV virus also is critical. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force reiterated its long-standing advice that everyone ages 15 to 65 — and anyone who’s pregnant — should be regularly screened, a step to early, life-saving treatment. But the latest recommendations went a step further.

Studies show that if people who are still healthy take certain HIV drugs every day, it dramatically reduces their chances of being infected by an HIV-positive sexual partner or from injection drug use. The approach is called PrEP, or preexposure prophylaxis. One brand — a two-medication combo pill named Truvada — so far is approved for preventive use in the U.S. The task force said PrEP is only for people at high risk of infection. That includes anyone with an HIV-positive sex partner; who has sex without a condom with someone at high risk of HIV; or who shares needles while injecting drugs. The recommendations were published in the Journal of

Studies released on Tuesday, June 11, 2019 show the anti-AIDS treatment also cuts the chances that someone who’s still healthy becomes infected from risky sex or injection drug use. But with nearly 40,000 new HIV infections each year in the U.S., only a fraction of people who could benefit are prescribed the drug for prevention. (AP Photo/Jeff Chiu, File)

Extensive flu outbreak in provinces

Due to the hot, humid and volatile weather since the beginning of June this year, there is a higher number of influenza patients in many provinces and the outbreak is likely to spread.

Due to the hot, humid and volatile weather since the beginning of June this year, there is a higher number of influenza patients in many provinces and the outbreak is likely to spread. In Chaiyaphum there have been more than 2,200 influenza patients this year alone. Dr. Wachira Botphiboon, Head of Chaiyaphum Provincial Office of Public Health, disclosed that the number is likely to increase, however no deaths have so far been reported. Both type A and B influenza has been found in patients.

Influenza can be transmitted by coughing, sneezing or in bodily secretions. Prevention can be helped by wearing a mask when in the company of suspected carriers of the virus. Risk groups include the obese, pregnant women, patients with chronic illnesses such as asthma and chronic lung disease, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Children aged 6 months to 2 years and persons aged 65 and above should receive influenza vaccinations to reduce the severity of the infection.

the American Medical Association. Other medical groups also urge Truvada for prevention, yet just 17 percent of people who might benefit were prescribed it last year, according to an accompanying editorial. Private insurers follow task force recommendations on what preventive care to cover, some at no out-ofpocket cost under rules from former President Barack Obama’s health care law. “How this recommendation will be implemented is of critical importance because cost is a major barrier,” Drs. Diane

Bear enters Montana home, settles in for nap in closet Missoula, Mont. (AP) — Authorities say a black bear somehow locked itself inside a Montana home and then nestled onto a closet shelf that wasn’t too hard, wasn’t too soft, but just right for a nap. Missoula County sheriff’s officials say the bear just yawned when deputies knocked on the window and unlocked the door in an attempt to coax it to leave Friday morning. They had to call Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks Department officials, who tranquilized the bear so it could be re-located. Sheriff’s officials say in a Facebook post that deputies responded at 5:45 a.m. to a call that a bear opened the door to the Butler Creek’s mudroom and somehow locked the deadbolt once inside. They say the bear “began ripping the room apart” before climbing up the closet for a nap. (Missoula County Sheriff’s via AP)

Cat filter goof leaves Pakistanis scratching their whiskers Peshawar, Pakistan (AP) — It was a mistake that had some people in Pakistan scratching their whiskers. A regional minister was giving a briefing that was livestreamed on social media last week when viewers noticed the officials had unexpected feline features. The cat filter, a social media feature applying drawn images onto people’s faces, was on. Social media was quick to pounce on the image. In a statement posted on Twitter, the ruling party’s social media team wrote it had determined “human error” by a hardworking volunteer caused the mistake. The team said the cat filter was removed “within a few minutes.” The team says actions have been taken to prevent “such an incident” in the future.

Woman uses shovel to kill cobra slithering on her patio Fairless Hills, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania woman used a shovel to kill a cobra she saw slithering on the patio of her apartment. Kathy Kehoe said the squawking of some blue jays outside her unit caught her attention Monday. When she looked outside, she saw a 4 to 5-foot-long serpent. The 73-year-old Kehoe says she noticed the lateral spot commonly found on cobras, grabbed a shovel and nudged its tail. When it rose and spread its hood, she realized it was a cobra. That’s when she decided to kill it. “I knew what I was doing was dangerous, I’m not a fool,” she said in a phone interview on Tuesday. “I just acted. I thought of the kids and other people in this community and I said ‘I can’t let this thing get away.’” Her apartment complex in Fairless Hills, about 30 miles northeast of Philadelphia, is the same one where officials removed 20 venomous snakes from another apartment in March. Officials aren’t sure if the cobra had escaped from that unit. Wildlife officials say people who spot snakes should call police and let experts handle the situation.

Fugitive ‘attack squirrel’ owner arrested in Alabama chase Killen, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama man who denied feeding methamphetamine to a so-called “attack squirrel” he considered a pet has been arrested on new charges. The Limestone County Sheriff’s Office tweeted that 35-year-old Mickey Paulk was caught Thursday night following a chase in which he rammed an investigator’s vehicle. Authorities had been seeking Paulk on multiple felony warrants unrelated to the squirrel he named “Deeznutz,” which was made infamous after police said they were warned about a methfueled squirrel that had been trained to attack. Paulk told The Associated Press last week that he was working on a plan for turning himself in to authorities. The sheriff’s office said narcotics investigators caught up with him while surveilling a motel in Killen. They spotted Paulk leaving on a stolen motorcycle and chased him down. Paulk has been booked into the Lauderdale County Jail on charges of attempting to elude, criminal mischief, receiving stolen property and felon in possession of a pistol after it was discovered he had a .45-caliber handgun in his waistband. It’s unclear whether he has a lawyer. As for Deeznutz, authorities say he couldn’t be tested for meth and has been released.

Glamor’s Golden Glow! Want to give your ‘lady’ photos that professional look? To be able to do that, you will need to learn the ‘Golden Glow’. The Golden Glow is what emanates from those wonderful photographs of people positively ‘glowing’ with health and vitality. Sickeningly brimming full of goodness, and golden hues just radiating from their every pore. Well, I am sorry to tell you, but like so many things in photography, it is a fraud! A photographic ‘trick’ but one that you can use to give your photos the ‘wow’ factor. And here’s the good news - this trick will cost you about 100 baht for the equipment and three minutes to master!

However, all photographic tricks still have to conform to the basic rules of physics, in particular the rules of light. Light travels in straight lines and will bounce off any non-translucent object. And that, quite simply, is the scientific basis to this trick. The ‘golden glow’ that comes from the subject in the photo, is really just reflected golden light, bounced back on to the subject. People shots benefit from this warm healthy look and when you use the technique properly, and the results can be spectacular. Now in the photographic sense, the natural golden glow comes in the late afternoon, with the sun getting low on the horizon. There are good scientific reasons why this is so, but here is not the place to discuss them. Just accept the fact that late afternoon sun is the “warm” time. Take pictures at this time of day and you will get that golden glow – but our photographic trick will allow

Dear Hillary, Every week there’s another farang that has been taken to the cleaners by one of the beautiful little schemers from their local hostelry. These girls must go to acting classes they are so good at it. Nobody could be so good at it without lessons! Even movie stars have acting lessons. Or do the lies come naturally. If so, how can any of us trust them? And how do you stop falling in love with them. Acting classes again? Roger Dear Roger, Sounds to me that you are the first of this week’s tales of woe yourself. If you are referring to the bar girls, Petal, their job is to empty the punters wallets, as quickly as possible. Time is money, after all. Some of the older ones are very expert at this and can keep several men on the line for years in some cases. The younger ones are too urgent and just milk one customer at a time. Do they have training schools for dramatic art? Yes, they have training schools, this is as in on the job training. The younger ones watch the older and more experienced ladies of the night twist the drinkers around their little fingers and then take them away for intensive therapy, whereupon they return with an empty wallet and then re-appear and beg for more the next day. The lady can oblige by milking the cash machine after getting your PIN number. And so the money wheel is oiled and ready to roll again. I agree with you where you say “how do you stop falling in love with them?” It is difficult, but true and lasting love doesn’t happen with two nights at your bar local bar and bar maids. You have a better chance with mermaids.

you to get that warm golden glow at any time of day – and control it as well, something you cannot do so easily with the sun as your light source! The celestial light technician can hide behind clouds at any time. What you have to do is build a light reflector that reflects that warm color. Go to the newsagent and get some gold foil paper. The sort of wrapping paper you use for wedding gifts. It may be embossed or patterned, and in fact it is better if it is, but must be gold in color. Glue the gold paper on to a sheet of cardboard or polystyrene sheet approximately one meter square. You do not have to be deathly accurate or neat. If the surface gets a little ‘scrunched up’ that is fine too. Your capital outlay is probably around 50-100 baht. Not bad, so far! Now you have a reflector, which if you play with it near a window for example, will shine “gold” on to any subject. You

are now ready to impart that golden glow. The best photos for this exercise are people shots taken outdoors, with the sun behind the subject. This we call ‘back lit’. You will find that the subject’s hair becomes very bright around the edges, almost like a ‘halo’ effect.

Dear Hillary, Do these dating services use photos of the real girls? I’ve replied to a couple which seemed to be in their late 50’s, not early 20’ as advertised. I’m not even sure if they were the ones I picked out. They all say they can speak English, but after “Hello” that’s about it. Gary Dear Gary, What do you expect to find in a dating agency? If a girl is a raving beauty, do you think they have to join an agency? No, they will have been snapped up years ago. For that matter, do you think ladies under 40 are going to look for a partner through an agency? No, they will continue to look around to see what is available, but by the time they get to 50 they will have run out of available men so go to an agency, to look just for you. Oh, the photograph. Yes, they are photos of real girls, but about 30 years ago. And for that matter, if you are like Brad Pitt you wouldn’t be looking at agency ladies either. Dear Hillary, I am being asked for a dowry for the girl who has been living with me for three months now. I enjoy having her around, and we went up to her home town to meet her folks. Her mother looks after her child from a previous marriage. Her father has a small rice farm. My girl is now saying that her parents expect us now to get married and we must go back to her village for the marriage, and that I am expected to pay the dowry for her as well as paying for the monks and the marriage ceremony and party. I asked her how much did they expect and she tells me around 200,000 baht will cover everything. Honestly Hillary, that is a lot of money, being a bit close to 4,000 pounds and the

Now for the addition of the golden glow. To do this, you position your reflector to shine some sunlight back towards the subject (that is why the sun should be behind the subject). Prop the reflector in the best position to give the degree of golden glow you want (I generally

just prop it up with the camera bag, or you can get an assistant to hold it for you) and look through the viewfinder. See what a difference this makes? The ugly chin shadow has gone as the light is coming upwards, and the subject now looks brilliantly glowing and healthy. The one meter square reflector will also impart catchlights to eyes to make them sparkle as well. The end photo has shiny hair, bright eyes and a golden complexion radiating warmth. A fabulous picture. Now, the downside! It is more difficult to get the correct exposure setting in the backlit situation. If your camera has a Backlight button, then use it. If not, walk in close to the subject so that the persons face fills the frame, and take your exposure reading from there. Use the exposure lock, or just memorize the readings and put them in on manual mode. It is worth it.

exchange rate is getting worse every day. I don’t know that I really want to go through this at that sort of money. I understand this may be the custom out here, but I want your opinion on it. I haven’t got anyone else I can ask to get some sensible advice. Will Dear Will, I am so tempted to reply “Where there’s a will, there’s a wont” but I didn’t. The idea of dowries is very old fashioned, going back several decades. It wasn’t money, but pigs, rice and buffalo. Dowries were worked out to reimburse the parents for the loss of a virgin daughter who worked on the family small-holding. In this case 200,000 baht is a nonsense, I’m afraid. She has been married before and has a dependent child which her mother looks after. Your blushing bride will be sending money to her mother each month to look after the child. Don’t get sucked in by all this, Petal. It is a con. The village “marriage” is not a legal entity either, even in Thailand. Run, and never go near that village again. Time to show your GF the door too, I’m afraid. And after three months cohabitation (big word for a Friday) you may need to give the lady a financial sweetener before she jumps of her boy friend’s motorcycle taxi.

annual visitor number this year is now expected to be 39-39.8 million, a 2-4% increase on last year. Annual spending by tourists in 2019 is expected to be 1.94 - 1.97 trillion baht. This new estimate takes into consideration the ongoing revision of the base figure from 2018, and the changing behavior

of international visitors this year, resulting in lower spending in some tourism categories and shorter trips, as younger travelers now make more trips and visit more countries each year. Price competition from domestic businesses and competition with other tourism countries are also taken into consideration.

For the remaining months of 2019, KResearch suggests business operators make proactive marketing plans for the upcoming tourism high season, such as offering more variations in tourism and accommodation packages to meet different budgets and lifestyles of travelers.

And all that jazz… A good many years ago I used to visit the 100 Club in London’s Oxford Street. In those days, it was a smoky, rather seedy joint in a cavernous dark cellar and well-known for its jazz concerts. I didn’t realize that the club had been founded back in 1942 and over the years it hosted some of the top names in jazz including Louis Armstrong and Benny Goodman. Amazingly, the club is still going strong today though I’d guess it has become rather more sedate. As a student I adored the jazz, especially the bright, brash sounds of Dixieland and visiting the club was enhanced by a slight frisson of guilt at being in such bohemian surroundings. Of course I didn’t tell my starchy professors back at the music college who surely have disapproved of such an undesirable place. So I could sympathize with the young French composer Darius Milhaud when he heard jazz for the first time. It excited him so much that in 1922 he set off to America and visited clubs and bars in New York’s Harlem, which

Darius Milhaud c. 1957.

were probably a good deal seedier than the place in Oxford Street. Milhaud (MEEoh) was twenty-four at the time and jazz had an enormous influence on him. As a result of this adventure, he was among the first European composers to incorporate jazz idioms in their music. His first jazz-inspired work, La Création du Monde dates from 1923. It’s not often you come across a restaurant named after a piece of classical music but there’s one in Paris. When Milhaud visited Brazil around 1918 he became captivated by the vibrant

popular music, especially a popular tango entitled O Boi no Telhado, which he translated as Le Bœuf sur le Toit (“The Cow on the Roof”). Returning to Paris in 1919, Milhaud wrote the score for a surrealist comic ballet of the same name, using Brazilian-style popular songs and dances. At the time, he and his professional friends used to meet at a popular artists’ bar in Paris called La Gaya. When the bar relocated in 1921, the owner renamed it Le Bœuf sur le toit, presumably to ensure that Milhaud and his crowd would continue to patronize it. They did, together with dozens of other distinguished customers, hangers-on and camp followers.

Darius Milhaud (1892-1974): Le Bœuf sur le toit. Orchestre de Paris cond. Alondra de la Parra (Duration: 19:02; Video: 420p) This exuberant, unbridled music is almost a sound-picture

of The Roaring Twenties and will brighten the greyest of days. You get the impression of a selection of scenes pasted together like the contents of a scrapbook and this is where much of its charm lies. A lot of Milhaud’s music is influenced by jazz and popular song and he often used a composing technique known as polytonality, in which parts of the music are in different keys at the same time. It creates a vaguely bizarre effect and was much favoured by Stravinsky. You can hear an example at 00:31 when the flutes are clearly playing in a different key to the rest of the orchestra. The work was premiered at the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in 1920 with a scenario by Jean Cocteau and stage designs by Raoul Dufy. In 1940 Milhaud emigrated to the United States where among other things, he taught composition at Mills

College in California. Two of his most well-known students were Dave Brubeck and Burt Bacharach to whom Milhaud once said, “Don’t be afraid of writing something people can remember and whistle.” Bacharach later wrote well over a hundred hits, so it was good advice.

Maurice Ravel (1875-1937): Piano Concerto in G major. Jean-Yves Thibaudet (pno); Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra cond. Philippe Jordan (Duration 29:09; Video 1080p HD) This wonderful concerto was written between 1929 and 1931. The first movement opens somewhat unusually with the so u n d o f a w h i p crack, created by slapping two pieces of wood together. The movement

is a colourful blend of Basque and Spanish musical ideas super-charged with jazz idioms, brilliantly performed with fine precision. The slow movement (08:37) leaves jazz far behind and takes us into a reverie - an elegant, soulsearching melody with a gentle waltz-like accompaniment. The third movement (17:24) returns to a more frenetic world, permeated by the distinct sounds of jazz. The spiky opening theme came to Ravel during a train journey not in France, but between Oxford and London. Oh, and in case you’re wondering, Le Bœuf sur le Toit still exists in Paris in the form of an ultra-chic restaurant which has jazz evenings every Friday and Saturday. It’s on rue du Colisée near the Champs Élysées and reservations are essential. If you decide to give it a try sometime, don’t forget your credit cards.

A rich mystery awaits in S.J. Rozan’s ‘Paper Son’ Oline H. Cogdill S.J. Rozan’s affinity for little known facts about Chinese culture has fueled exciting thrillers featuring private detectives Lydia Chin and Bill Smith. Memorable plots include a Jewish settlement in China comprised of refugees fleeing Nazi Germany (“The Shanghai Moon”), political art (“Ghost Hero”) and restaurant workers’ union (“A Bitter Feast”). In the outstanding “Paper Son,” Rozan uses the history of Chinese immigrants who established regular grocery stores serving predominantly black neighborhoods in the Mississippi Delta during the early 20th century to sculpt a story about family, culture, prejudice and community. These businesses took hold because the Chinese laborers’ jobs building the railroads dried up and white grocers who would not sell to black residents. Lydia, a Chinese American who lives with her traditional mother in New York’s Chinatown, had never heard of Chinese grocers nor did she know that she had relatives living in Mississippi until a tragedy happens. Her 23-yearold cousin, Jefferson Tam, has been arrested for the murder of his grocer father, Leland. Despite the strong evidence, Lydia’s mother refuses to believe any relative — no matter how distant — could be a murderer. She wants Lydia and Bill to go to Clarksdale, Mississippi, to prove Jefferson’s

innocence. That alone is a revelation since Lydia’s mother has never approved of her profession and has even less regard for Bill, who is white. With Jefferson’s uncle, Capt. Pete Tam, as their guide, Lydia and Bill maneuver through the morass of bigotry and an economically depressed community overwhelmed with drugs. Although the Tams have lived in Clarksdale for generations, the family still is disconnected from the rest of the town. However, those family members who moved away to larger cities have a different experience, including Reynold Tam, whose father married a white woman and who is running for governor of Mississippi. Chinese families are complicated, as Lydia explains to Bill. While these people are distant relatives, they are still family. Adding to the tangled family tree are those men who are “paper sons” — immigrants who convinced naturalized Chinese Americans to file papers identifying them as a son. In some cases, these “sons” had never met their “fathers.” A bit of money helped. Lydia and Bill were last seen in 2011’s “Ghost Hero,” but Rozan’s intricate plotting and affinity for characterization is seamless, making the reader remember how much we missed spending time with these private detectives. Rozan uses the historical footnote of Chinese grocers as a springboard for a rich, deeply satisfying mystery. (AP)

‘Spider-Man’ swings again with a successful sequel

Mark Kennedy Los Angeles (AP) - Peter Parker might be forgiven for craving a vacation as “Spider-Man: Far From Home” begins. After an emotional and strenuous last few movies with the Avengers, a break sounds nice. “I didn’t think I had to save the world this summer,” he complains. But, you know the drill: With great power comes great responsibility. So it’s just a matter of time before Parker’s European school trip is interrupted by mayhem that requires a webslinger. We’re just glad the filmmakers didn’t also take a vacation as well. In this ambitious and ultimately successful sequel to “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” Parker trades New York’s Coney Island and the Staten Island ferry for such iconic cities as Venice, Berlin, London and

Prague. Seeing him swing from ancient bell towers instead of Manhattan skyscrapers is weirdly thrilling. The first half of “SpiderMan: Far From Home “ could stand alone — Parker juggles trying to romance the toughbut-vulnerable MJ (the always welcome Zendaya) while also fighting giant monsters beside a ragtag group of superheroes. Perhaps it’s a little underwhelming, but it’s solid. Just stick around: Things get positively bizarre in the second half as the film shifts up a few gears, turning into a kind of commentary on filmmaking illusion itself. It goes from sunny pop to acid jazz, from “Saved By the Bell” to “The Matrix.” Speaking of school, viewers who haven’t yet seen “Avengers: Endgame” have some homework to do before watching Tom Holland pull on the red-and-blue suit this time. “Far From Home” takes place immediately after the meta-conclusion of all 22 films in the Marvel Cinematic

Universe and assumes you know what happened. Plus, it might be a school night, but don’t even think about leaving the theater before catching the two post-film codas. Director Jon Watts returns, adding to the great work he did in the first film, and screenwriters Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, who helped write “Homecoming,” make their own homecoming. So

does Jon Favreau playing Happy Hogan, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May and Jacob Batalon as Parker’s best pal, who this time ditches the nerdiness to show off a manof-the-world Ned. Borrowed from elsewhere in the Marvel Universe are Cobie Smulders as S.H.I.E.L.D. agent Maria Hill and a snarling Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.

Spider-Man gets to play this time with a pair of high-tech eyeglasses that are an advanced tactical intelligence system, much like he interacted last time with his suit’s computer, Karen. (Alas, no cameo this time from Stan Lee, the Marvel icon who died in 2018). Jake Gyllenhaal, who has proven to be an actor of tremendous range, is a newcomer to the superhero genre but proves a comfortable fit despite being asked to wear one of Marvel’s oddest costumes. As Mysterio, he dons a huge cape, Roman Empire breastplate, giant gauntlets and a big glass bubble over his face like an upside-down goldfish bowl. But as Will Smith might say, Gyllenhaal makes this look good. Credit to him and costume designer Anna B. Sheppard, who has concocted four Spider-Man suits, including a “stealth” one that gets him the nickname Night Monkey in Europe. And the trippy

visual effects that stun in the second half connect not to the first film but to “SpiderMan: Into the Spider-Verse” — a huge complement since that one was animated. But let’s be honest: The thing keeping this together is Holland. He is utterly endearing as a goofy, insecure now-16-year-old hero with a cracked cellphone and who often makes things worse, apologizing along the way. Holland’s awshucks naiveté is a 1950-ish throwback even though he is firmly in 2019 — taking selfies while in the air and having to be reminded to not text and swing at the same time. He is indeed a Spidey for Generation Z and its fitting that he hits the reset button for Marvel. “Spider-Man: Far From Home,” a Sony Pictures release, is rated PG-13 for “scifi action violence, some language and brief suggestive comments.” Running time: 127 minutes. Three stars out of four.

Once a year in the first week in August, Mt. Ephraim opens its gates to The New Day Festival, and what a wonderful musical event it is too. the stages where after each band finishes they congregate and sign any merchandise bought by the patrons. At the top of each field are the beer tents with over sixty professional stewards in attendance while the cricket pitch is transformed into a camping/glamping site for

the duration of the event. There is plenty of parking space and the amenities are abundant and impeccably clean. There are also plenty of nearby hotels and inns nearby in cast camping is not for you. With all this, there are some Rock & Roll bands too to enjoy. Last year the line-up was amazing and for 2019 the organizers have gone all out to better it. Each day has a band that could easily headline at any other festival playing in mid-afternoon: on Friday we have Thunderstick, Saturday Kingdom of Madness: Classic Magnum, and Sunday sees Martin Turner’s Wishbone Ash take to the stage. In fact, Sunday is headliners all day long. The New Day Festival is a very special event in the musical calendar. The Hard Rock Hotel raised 1 million baht at its 16th charity concert for HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn’s charity fund and the Hard Rock’s own community service projects. Pattaya City Council Chairman Anan Angkanawisai kicked off the July 5 show by The Parkinson for 230 people who paid 3,000 baht each to get in. House band Nakita took the stage first as the curtain raiser and, after the main act, Kavee Suwannachartpan and the Pattaya Mail’s Tony Malhotra emceed an auction for a signed

Parkinson guitar, hotel vouchers and more. The guitar went for 10,000 baht while a four-night stay at Gili Lankanfushi Maldives went for 90,000 baht to a former hotel staffer. The

combined profits from tickets, donations and the auction netted 1 million baht for the royal charity, scholarships under the Rock the School, Rock the Lunch and Rock the Farm.

NASA: Intense work under way on rocket for future moonshots Janet McConaughey New Orleans (AP) — As the 50th anniversary of the Apollo Moon Landing approaches, crews are working around the clock at a NASA rocket factory, intent on meeting a new fall 2020 deadline to test launch a mega-rocket designed to propel astronauts to the moon and beyond, a space agency official said. “I came out here in the middle of the night ... talking to people who were working on the engine section, working hard through the night,” NASA Deputy Administrator James Morhard said on a press tour at New Orleans’ Michoud Assembly Center. He said the core rocket assembly — or Space Launch System — is 80 percent complete, with one of five sections still under assembly. If all goes well, the oftendelayed Artemis 1 test flight is expected take place in fall 2020, though no launch date

has been announced. Plans call for the rocket to carry an uncrewed Orion capsule aloft before the engines are jettisoned 8 minutes and 14 seconds out. The capsule is then to make a double loop around the moon during 25½ days in flight, NASA has said. Officials said no commercial rocket, current or planned, is as powerful as the Space Launch System, which will carry a load three times as heavy as the space shuttle could handle. They also called it a new approach to reaching the moon, unlike the Apollo missions decades ago. “The exciting part is this is not going to be done like Apollo ... where we put a flag on the moon and left,” said Lionel Dutreix, deputy chief operations manager at Michoud. “We’re going to keep returning to the moon and use it as a technical base and knowledge to go on to Mars. We’ve got to make sure this rocket will meet those needs.”

A man walks underneath the core stage for NASA’s Space Launch System (SLS), which they say will carry the Orion spacecraft, and ultimately a crew, to the moon and beyond, at the NASA Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans, Friday, June 28, 2019. (AP Photo/Gerald Herbert)

The rocket isn’t reusable because, under current plans, it would cost more to recover and refurbish the engine assembly than to build anew, Dutreix said. In December, the giant

rocket is to be transported on the NASA barge Pegasus to Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama for testing. When topped with the Orion spacecraft and its fuel tank, it will stand 322 feet (98

meters) high — taller than the Statue of Liberty but shorter than the Saturn V rocket that launched the Skylab space station and the Apollo program that carried men to the moon.

The rocket section currently being assembled at Michoud will hold four RS25 engines of the kind that propelled space shuttles. The engines were visible at Michoud, with bright red covers marked “THIS SIDE FACES AFT” covering their wide back ends. Officials said NASA has another dozen for further Artemis missions, with six more under contract. Asked whether $20 billion to $30 billion was an accurate figure for cost overruns on the program, the deputy administrator said, “I’m not going to stand here and give an exact budget.” Morhard also wouldn’t say whether he expects NASA to get the $1.6 billion 2020 budget addition requested by President Donald Trump for space exploration. “The House added $1.3 billion for science programs. The Senate hasn’t marked up the bill. I’m waiting to see what the Senate does,” he said.

Chinese singer spins Cinderella story at PCEC

The man who followed his dream, David S. Lee enjoys telling his PCEC audience about how his love for music caused him to give up a lucrative career working for NASA and go on to become a famous Chinese and Taiwanese Rock star.

It was another ‘Words & Music Presentation’ at the Pattaya City Expats Club (PCEC) meeting on Sunday, 30 June, as they welcomed David S. Lee who energetically spoke about “My life as a Chinese and Taiwanese pop star.” David is an International Award-Winning Recording Artist, Producer, Digital Engineer, and Lecturer. His was an amazing Cinderella story about a Chinese born boy, whisked off to America at a time of her glory. Grabbed that glory in music and exported it back to China at a time that was ripe, becoming the father of rock in that country. He has been blessed with talent, glory, money and success. A story only dreamt of by many. He mentioned that his dad, a General in the Taiwanese Army and sensing difficult times ahead with mainland China, scraped up the money to send David to America at that vulnerable age of 13. Much to his dad’s anguish, while living with family in Houston, Texas, David became what at the time was a

typical American teenager, loving Rock music, growing long hair and participating in some other unsatisfactory activities. Eventually his father moved to America, didn’t like Houston and moved on to stay in Florida with another relative. He said his father called him and begged him not to pursue the music career into which he was too obviously headed. Just two days later David received a call saying his dad had died suddenly. Trying to honor his dad’s wish, David temporarily gave up the idea of a music career and added computer science as well as music to his studies at the University of Houston. He was good at math and with a computer science background; NASA offered him a well-paying job working with communications equipment on the space shuttle. Even that could not quell his yearning to know, write and sing music; American rock at that. While in the cockpit of the shuttle where he was supposed to be working,

event that caused him quit his great job at NASA to pursue his dream, music. Thus, he then began his 5year plan. So, at 23, he opened his recording studio and production company which operated for over 20 years; his clients included producers from Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Billy Joel, and movie sound tracks with Superman, Tender Mercy and more. A wonderful turning point in David’s life came when Michael Jackson’s manager took David by the arm, brought him to a quiet room where they both got down on their knees and pointing upward said that from now

His English album also went onto the Billboard, R&R, Gavin Charts, and his life story was made into cartoon series, autobiography, movie and TV specials. This incursion of rock style into the Chinese music scene was climactic, starting the change in China from traditional music to contemporary. David is often seen as the father of that transition. In China he was nicknamed the “grasshopper”. In 1990, he formed an entertainment and production company in Hollywood which produced and promoted many international major events including the Harlem Globetrotters, Ice Capades, introducing them to the China/Asia and USSR markets. This initiative was almost a fluke. The Globetrotters were scheduled to go to Korea but could not, due to rare circumstances. As a person with some connections in China he was asked if he could arrange booking the Trotters there. He got them into Beijing and that lead to him being a conduit for many other groups going to China.

David is also a writer and in 1995 he released his first book “20 Years of Music in Hollywood,” revealing the recording techniques inside the music industry. It is now one of the most popular text books for the modern music study. From 1997 to 2008 he was President of Grasshopper Music/SONY, where he produced and released recordings by Asian and US artists for over 30 albums, including the New Age Grammy Award winning artist Jamii Szmadzinski. His latest book, published in 2015, focused on the producer’s techniques in today’s modern digital world. Even now he lectures about using a 5 year plan: where will you be in five years and how do you plan to get there. The presentation was followed by announcements and news of special interest groups, then the Open Forum where the audience can ask questions or make comments about expat living in Thailand, especially Pattaya. he was listening to and memorizing words from groups like the Eagles. It was during this period that he was attending a party and a close friend asked him, ‘David, what do you want to be 5 years from now?’ Before he could answer, the friend said for him to really think about it before he answered. After some thought, he said that in 5 years, he would like to do music every day. She then mentioned what he should be doing in each of the next 5 years to reach that goal. It was this

on, he would get the glory of what we do. He went on to help David complete his first successful album launching a brilliant career. This led to his first signing with PolyGram/Universal Records in 1982. They were thinking they were signing an American rock star and much surprised to learn that he was Chinese originally from Taiwan. His first Chinese album actually contained 8 songs in English. In 1983, his Chinese album stayed #1 on the pop chart for a continuous 12 weeks.

Animated videos: Boy Scouts’ new tactic to fight sex abuse David Crary New York (AP) — Under financial pressure from sexabuse litigation, the Boy Scouts of America are seeking to bolster their abuseprevention efforts with a new awareness program featuring cartoon-style videos that will be provided to more than 1.2 million Cub Scouts across the nation. Targeted at children from kindergarten to sixth grade, the series of six videos aims to teach children how to recognize potentially abusive behavior and what to do if confronted by it. The initiative, announced Thursday, comes as the Boy Scouts face a potentially huge wave of abuse-related lawsuits after several states enacted laws this year making it easier for victims of long-ago abuse to file claims. The Boy Scouts acknowledge that the litigation poses a financial threat and have not ruled out seeking bankruptcy protection. The bulk of the newly surfacing abuse cases date to the 1960s, ’70s and ’80s; the BSA says there were only five known abuse victims in 2018 out of 2.2 million youth members. The BSA credits the change to an array of prevention policies adopted since the mid-1980s, including mandatory criminal background checks and abuse-prevention training for all staff and volunteers, and a rule that two or more adult leaders be present with youth at all times during scouting activities.

The Boy Scouts’ youth protection director, former police investigator Mike Johnson, decided to add the videos to the prevention program after vetting them with parents of Cub Scoutage children and with children themselves. “Parents told me they’re having these conversations with their kids, and they felt the videos would help them have a better, richer conversation,” Johnson said. “The kids are engaged. ... There’s some heavy topics discussed in a child-specific way.” Previous BSA prevention videos featured real people, not animated characters. “The power and magic of animation, and its ability to communicate with kids — I underestimated it,” Johnson said. The videos and related learning materials were developed in 2015-16 by psychologists and other experts recruited by the Barbara Sinatra Children’s Center, a nonprofit in Rancho Mirage, California, that specializes in helping children affected by abuse. Jon Conte, a University of Washington professor emeritus who helped develop the videos, summarized their purpose this way: “Providing children with the knowledge and skills to identify risk situations and to avoid, escape or disclose abuse before it happens or after it happens once.” The videos target two age groups: kindergarten through third grade and fourth through sixth grade.

This image from video made available by the Boy Scouts of America in June 2019 shows a frame from an animated video which is part of a sex-abuse prevention program adopted by the Scouts. Targeted at children from kindergarten to sixth grade, the series of six videos aims to teach children how to recognize potentially abusive behavior and what to do if confronted by it. (BSA via AP)

Each series features a boy and girl who talk about experiencing abusive situations — for example, with a neighbor or coach — and explain how they used a set of “Protect Yourself Rules” to avoid harm. One of the rules, in case of abuse: “Shout, run, tell.” Another rule is “Safe touch, unsafe touch” — being wary of anyone touching the child on a part of the body that their bathing suit would cover. “Unsafe touches are scary and confusing, because they can seem playful or gentle,” says a character in the video for kindergarteners. The videos for older children extend beyond sex abuse, addressing bullying, domestic violence and online dangers. The accompanying lesson materials will be required for all Cub Scout units. For example, second-graders at the rank of Wolf would be asked to identify five trusted adults to whom

Pattaya School No. 4 celibrates 81 years

School administrators, teachers, former students and students observe Pattaya School No. 4’s 81st anniversary in Naklua.

Jetsada Homklin Pattaya School No. 4 marked its 81st anniversary with nine monks performing religious ceremonies. Vice Principal Ichaya Ola welcomed Deputy Mayor Manote Nongyai to the July 1 event.

Nine monks from Wat Nongyai, led by Abbot Samutyongyuth Kemataro, blessed the school and recited prayers. School officials and guests then made merit by offering the monks lunch. School No. 4 is located in Naklua and was called

they could report an abuse incident. They’d also be asked to demonstrate how they would say “No” to someone making them uncomfortable. John Thoresen, the Sinatra Center’s chief executive, said the videos are used in many schools in the U.S. and abroad, and have been viewed by more than 100 million children since 2017.

Thoresen said the videos’ boy and girl characters are a good fit for the Cub Scouts, which last year ended a boysonly policy and now have about 78,000 girls in the ranks. Within the next year, the Sinatra Center plans to complete animated anti-abuse videos for older youths. Johnson said the Boy Scouts might be interested in using them for its program serving boys and girls aged 11-17. The BSA’s current youth participation of 2.2 million is down from more than 4 million in peak years of the past. In many ways, the BSA’s challenges related to sex abuse parallel those facing the Roman Catholic Church in the U.S. Both institutions boast of major progress over the past 20 or 30 years in combatting sex abuse — whether by priests or scout leaders — but both face numerous lawsuits alleging negligence and cover-ups, mostly in prior years. Founded in 1910, the BSA has kept confidential files since the 1920s listing staff

and volunteers implicated in sexual abuse, for the avowed purpose of keeping predators away from youth. According to a court deposition, the files as of January listed 7,819 suspected abusers and 12,254 victims. Until late May, the BSA had insisted it never knowingly allowed a predator to work with youth. On May 27, The Associated Press reported that attorneys for abuse survivors had identified multiple cases in which known predators were allowed to return to posts as unit leaders. The next day, BSA chief executive Mike Surbaugh wrote to a U.S. House committee, acknowledging that the group’s previous claim was untrue. “I have reviewed information that now makes clear to me that decades ago BSA did, in at least some instances, allow individuals to return to Scouting even after credible accusations of sexual abuse,” Surbaugh wrote. “I am devastated that this ever occurred.”

US preschoolers less pudgy in latest sign of falling obesity Lindsey Tanner Chicago (AP) — Preschoolers on government food aid have grown a little less pudgy, a U.S. study found, offering fresh evidence that previous signs of declining obesity rates weren’t a fluke. Obesity rates dropped steadily to about 14% in 2016 — the latest data available — from 16% in 2010, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. “It gives us more hope that this is a real change,” said Heidi Blanck, who heads obesity prevention at the CDC. The results were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. The improvement affected youngsters ages 2 through 4 who receive food vouchers and other services in the federal Women, Infants and Children nutrition program. About 1 in 5 U.S. kids that age were enrolled in 2016. An earlier report involving program participants the same age found at least small declines in obesity in 18 states between 2008 and 2011. That was the first decline after years of increases that later plateaued, and researchers weren’t sure if it was just a blip. Improvements in food options in that program including adding more fruits, vegetables and whole grains may have contributed to the back-to-back obesity

A study released in June found U.S. preschoolers on government food aid have grown a little less pudgy, offering fresh evidence that previous signs of shrinking obesity weren’t a fluke. Obesity rates dropped to about 14 percent in 2016, the latest data available and a steady decline from 16 percent in 2010, researchers from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported. (AP Photo/Patrick Sison, File)

declines, researchers said. Other data show obesity rates in 2016 were stable but similar, about 14 percent, for children aged 2 to 5 who were not enrolled in the program, Blanck noted. While too many U.S. children are still too heavy, the findings should be celebrated, said Dr. William Dietz, a former CDC obesity expert. “The changes are meaningful and substantial.” Dietz said program changes that cut the amount of juice allowed and switched from high-fat to low-fat milk likely had the biggest impact. He estimated that amounted to an average of 9,000 fewer monthly calories per child.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends lowfat milk for children. It also suggests kids should limit juice intake and choose fresh fruits instead. Further reducing U.S. childhood obesity will require broader changes — such as encouraging families and day care centers to routinely serve fruits, vegetables and whole grains; and employers to extend parental leave to make breastfeeding easier for new mothers, said Maureen Black, a child development and nutrition specialist at the University of Maryland. Studies have shown breastfed infants are less likely than others to become obese later on.

Paul Chesney had a spell in the UK and has come back refreshed and showing good form for his first couple of games, today a very good 36 points.

Bernie Stafford, in a rare appearance at Links, took third place on countback over another in-form player in Toby Glass, both with 34 points. Jacob Cummings, in his final game this trip, filled the last spot on the podium with 33 points. Near pins went to Toby Glass, Derek Phillips, Jacob Cummings and Bernie Stafford.

Gilroy prevails at Pattavia The Tara Court Golf Society Sunday, June 30, Green Valley Stableford 1st Shaun Merriman (11) 36pts 2nd Paul Butler (16) 36pts 3rd Jack Grinvold (3) 35pts 4th Pete Seil (5) 35pts The day at Green Valley was just perfect for golf. We had a small group again and only one flight. Shaun Merriman kept up his steady golf of late and was the winner with thirtysix points. Paul Butler also had thirty-six but he lost out

on the countback to Shaun and had to settle for second place. We also had a countback for the next two places and here Jack Grinvold won out and he came third ahead of Pete Seil, both with thirty five points. We had two 2’s today, from Shaun Merriman and Jack Grinvold with one each.

Tuesday, July 2, Pattavia - Stableford A small group out today and the greens here at Pattavia were a bit slower

than normal, but still hard if you were above the hole. It was tight scoring today and coming out on top was Russell Gilroy (H/cap 16) with a fine 37 points. There were 3 players on 35 points and here a great sand save for a par on the last got Ted Morris (17) the second place on the podium. Craig Hitchens (13) holed a treacherous downhill putt, also on 18, for par to take third place, leaving Shaun Merriman (11) out of the prizes. No one managed a 2 today.

Buchanen best at Phoenix PSC Golf from The Billabong Bar Monday, July 1, Phoenix Golf Stableford Phoenix on the Lakes and Ocean loops today. The scoring wasn’t too bad, with only one golfer scoring below 30 points. There was a countback between Sandy Chapo and Glen Elsworth, both on 35 points, with Sandy having the better back-nine to take third spot. Second went to the little French general, Gerard Lambert, with 37 points, but the day belonged to Dave Buchanen playing off his 1 handicap and scoring 38 points, 2 under off the stick! There was only one birdie 2, coming from Sandy Chapo.

Wednesday, July 3, Green Valley Stableford With 32 golfers taking advantage of the great deal that Capt. Bob has at Laem Chabang, only 6 groups turned up to play at Green Valley today. In the men’s’ competition Selwyn Wegner (H/cap 15) was the star performer, having only one double bogey in his round to finish with 42 points and looking forward to a reduction in his handicap. Auke Engelkes (13) played well but with only 8 points on his

last 5 holes he could not keep up with Selwyn and had to settle for 2nd place on 39 points. Two double bogies and a blob on the way out stopped Pete Thomas (17) making any sort of a challenge for the top berth, but 3rd place and 36 points was respectable. For the ladies, Miss May (12) is always consistent with her game but today she excelled herself. A birdie on the 1st an eagle on the 7th and a gross score of 74 gave her 46 points and a runnerway victory which she richly deserved. Miss Na (11) had 10 pars for 2nd place, winning on a countback from Miss Nu (15) who only dropped 3 shots on the front nine. We had two 2s today, from Auk Engelkes and Miss Na.

Wednesday, July 3, Laem Chabang Stableford Laem Chabang is known as the premier golf course in this area and is in spectacular condition, even with the amount of rain the course has endured recently. With 8 groups playing the starter gave us a two-tee start to save a little time. The scoring wasn’t too bad with one of the Aussie lads, Deano, taking 5th place with 33 points. Then there was a countback between the Kiwi contingent of John Harper, Graham Bayly and Ralph, all on 34 points, with John taking 4th, Graham 3rd and Ralph 2nd. One of the local lads, Andrew Woodall, took the top spot with 38 points. There were three 2’s, coming from Gavin, John and Andrew.

Feng birdies final hole for a 1-shot win on LPGA Tour Oneida, Wis. (AP) — Shanshan Feng set a high target for such low scoring at the Thornberry Creek LPGA Classic, and she figured she had done enough. Three birdies in a four-hole stretch had taken her from three shots behind to one shot ahead last Sunday, or so she thought. It was only after she hit 7-iron to 3 feet on the final hole that she saw the leaderboard and realized she was tied with Thailand’s Ariya Jutanugarn. “I’m like, ‘Oh, no. I have to make that one,’” Feng said. No problem. Leaving the flagstick in, she rolled in her final birdie putt for a 9-under 63 and a one-shot victory over Jutanugarn, who had hit 8-iron to 3 feet for birdie and a 64. Feng won for the 10th time on the LPGA Tour, but her first victory since Blue Bay in China in November 2017. The shootout on the soft Thornberry Creek at Oneida course materialized the way everyone expected. Patty Tavatanakit shot 61 and was part of a five-way tie for the lead before the final two groups even teed off. She wound up in a tie for 15th. Seven players had at least a share of the lead at

as Hannah Green won. “Overall, my whole week was really good,” Jutanugarn said. “It’s like amazing, because I didn’t expect to play that good at all, so I’m really happy about how I played.” Tiffany Joh birdied her last three holes for a 67 and tied for third withAmy Yang (65) for her best finish on the LPGA Tour. some point in the final round. Jutanugarn, a former world No. 1 still searching for her first victory this year, appeared to be in control with a three-shot lead on the back nine. She holed a bunker shot for an eagle on the reachable par-4 sixth. She closed out her 30 on the front nine with another eagle. But the Thai pulled her tee shot on the par-5 15th, turning a birdie hole into a

Jutanugarn wasn’t finished, however, with her final full shot covering the flag and setting up birdie. Feng had the last word. “Before the round today, I didn’t know what the others

US win 4th Women’s World Cup, beat Dutch 2-0 Anne M. Peterson Lyon, France (AP) — The U.S. won a record fourth Women’s World Cup title and second in a row, beating the Netherlands 2-0 last Sunday night when Megan Rapinoe converted a tiebreaking penalty kick in the second half and Rose Lavelle added a goal. Rapinoe scored in the 61st minute after a video review determined Stefanie van der Gragt had fouled Alex Morgan with a kick to the shoulder while competing for a deflected pass in the penalty area. Two days past her 34th birthday, Rapinoe slotted the ball past Sari van Veenendaal for her sixth goal of the tournament. She became the oldest player to score in a Women’s World Cup final. “Getting to play at the highest level of the World Cup with the team we have is just ridiculous. But to be able to couple that with everything on the field and to back up all of those words with performances and to back up all of those performances with words, it’s just

incredible,” Rapinoe said. “I feel like this team is in the midst of changing the world around us as we live, and it’s just an incredible feeling.” Lavelle, at 24 the team’s upand-coming star, added her third goal of the tournament on an 18-yard left-footed shot in the 69th after a solo run from the center circle. “It’s been a long journey. It doesn’t seem real yet. I hasn’t hit me, it’s so surreal, to be part of this group and to play with these players,” Lavelle said. Fans, many dressed in red, white and blue, chanted “Equal Pay!” at the final whistle, a reminder players sued the U.S. Soccer Federation in March claiming gender discrimination. The sides have agreed to mediate the lawsuit. Rapinoe also called out FIFA on the eve of the championship, suggesting soccer’s governing body was not doing enough to grow the women’s game, pointing to unequal prize money and the scheduling of the final on the same day as the championships of the CONCACAF

Gold Cup in Chicago and the Copa America final in Brazil. Whether unequal treatment from soccer officials will change is uncertain. The Americans’ dominance in France is unquestioned. They never trailed at the tournament and set records with 26 goals and a 12-game World Cup winning streak

when then-president Sepp Blatter was a no-show as U.S. prosecutors investigated corruption in soccer’s governing body. With confidence that some called arrogance — triggering a backlash that the angry response was sexist — this American team established a standard that exceeded the U.S. champions of 1991, 1999 and 2015, becoming a goal for all others to match. Mia Hamm and Brandi Chastain were among the former American players who joined the current

Tales Azzoni and Mauricio Savarese Rio de Janeiro (AP) — Brazil didn’t need Neymar to win another Copa América title at home. With its injured star watching from the stands at a packed Maracanã Stadium last Sunday, Brazil beat Peru 3-1 to win a first South American title since 2007. It was Neymar’s replacement, Everton, who led the team to victory, scoring a goal and setting up another to give Brazil its ninth Copa América trophy, and fifth at home. Gabriel Jesus and Richarlison also scored for Brazil, which has won the title every time it hosted the tournament. “I gave everything I had today,” said Everton, who was voted player of the final and also finished as one of the tournament’s top scorers with three goals. “Who would have thought that Everton would be playing in the final and would be named the man of the match,” Brazil coach Tite said. Neymar, who was ruled out before the tournament because of an ankle injury, sat with his son close to Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro among the crowd of nearly 70,000 at the Maracanã. “Neymar is extraordinary, he’s a top 3 player,” Tite said. But “with teamwork we stayed strong.”

dating to 2015. Jill Ellis became the first coach to lead a team to two Women’s World Cup titles, and the U.S. joined Germany in 2003 and 2007 as the only repeat champions. While the U.S. has four titles, Germany is the only other nation with even two. “It’s just chemistry. They put their hearts and soul into this journey,” Ellis said. “They made history.” FIFA President Gianni Infantino handed over the trophy, a stark contrast to four years ago in Canada,

generation for the postgame celebration. Alyssa Naeher, the 31year-old who succeeded Hope Solo in goal, faced repeated questions entering the tournament but allowed just three goals and finished with her fourth shutout. The U.S. had scored within the first 12 minutes of its previous six matches but the European champions sat back to keep their defensive shape and kept the score 00 through the first half. Video review, adopted by FIFA for the men’s World Cup last year, showed its impact when Stephanie Frappart, the first woman to referee a men’s Ligue 1 match, initially did not call the foul on Morgan, then went to the screen at the side of the field, watched replays and signaled toward the spot. Rapinoe, who missed the semifinal win over England with a hamstring injury, became the first woman to score on a penalty kick during a Women’s World Cup final, her 50th goal in 158 international appearances. She ended the Netherlands’ 317minute scoreless streak and matched Morgan and England’s Ellen White for most goals in the tournament, winning the Golden Ball based on fewer minutes.

Brazilian fans had some reason to worry after Gabriel Jesus was sent off in the 70th minute because of a second yellow card, but Peru couldn’t pull off one last upset after eliminating Uruguay in the quarterfinals and twotime defending champion Chile in the semifinals. “Brazil deserved the victory,” Peru coach Ricardo Gareca said. “We played

better than we did in the previous match. We have improved as a team. We still have to improve more, but we are on the right track.” Peru, which had been routed 5-0 by Brazil in the group stage and barely avoided early elimination, was trying to win its first Copa América trophy since 1975 and just its second overall. It hadn’t returned to the final since ’75.

Tokyo (AP) — Tokyo’s new National Stadium is 90% completed with the opening of the Olympics just over a year away. Media were given a glimpse inside the $1.25 billion stadium last week. It is located in central Tokyo and will be the scene of the opening ceremony on July 24, 2020. It will also be the venue for track and field and some soccer. Organizers say they are planning events in December to inaugurate the new stadium, which was designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma.

The new stadium design was first awarded to British architect Zaha Hadid, but eventually the futuristic design was scrapped by the government as the cost soared toward $2 billion. Organizers say about 45,000 of the 60,000 permanent seats have been installed, and the grass surface should be down by the end of the month. The all-weather track will be installed in August and September. Including the stadium, Tokyo is building eight new venues for the Olympics. The other 35 venues for the games are defined as

“temporary” or older buildings that are being reused, which Tokyo organizers say has saved billions. The other centerpiece for the games will be the Olympic Village for more than 10,000 athletes being built on the edge of Tokyo Bay. The Summer Olympics don’t come cheaply, and even existing venues need extensive renovation when the Games come to town. Exact costs — what are, and are not Olympic expenses — are difficult to sort out. But Tokyo is spending at least $20 billion to get ready, 70% of which is taxpayers’ money.

Crusaders beat Jaguares 19-3 to win Super Rugby title Christchurch, New Zealand (AP) — The Christchurchbased Crusaders beat Argentina’s Jaguares 19-3 in the Super Rugby final last Saturday to win the southern hemisphere tournament for the third year in a row and the 10th time overall. Scott Robertson, who won three titles with the Crusaders as a player, has now won the championship in each of his three years as head coach. He celebrated in the now traditional fashion by breakdancing on the field at the Christchurch Stadium as his players stood around decked with winners’ medals. The 18,000-seat stadium, a “temporary” facility developed in the aftermath of the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, was filled to capacity on a bitterly-cold evening, including by many exuberant fans of

the Jaguares whose coach Gonzalo Quesada guided them to their first final in his first year in charge. Those fans saw Crusaders flyhalf Richie Mo’unga punctuate the game with four penalties and the conversion of the only try, scored by hooker Codie Taylor. “Defense won it again for us,” Robertson said. “It feels like the last three weeks have been finals. “We had to get back to basics, we had to get old school and just plug it into the corners. (Flanker) Matt Todd made 100 tackles and we just found a way.” The Crusaders had 12 All Blacks in their starting 15 and the Jaguares are almost all members of the Argentina national team, bringing a test-match intensity to the final just over two months

from the start of the Rugby World Cup in Japan. For the first 10 minutes, the Crusaders camped in Jaguares territory but couldn’t break a willing defense. For the next five minutes the Jaguares attacked and the first points of the game came in the 15th minute when Joacquin Diaz Bonilla goaled from a scrum penalty. By halftime it was the Crusaders who had to make almost twice as many tackles as their opponents. The Jaguares rushed up in defense and tackled around the legs, putting players on the ground and allowing them to quickly contest at the breakdown. That forced the Crusaders to try and pass out of contact and in frosty conditions they made handling errors, 6-1 in the first quarter.

Noah Lyles runs 19.50 in 200 meters, 4th best time ever Graham Dunbar Lausanne, Switzerland (AP) — Noah Lyles raced to the fourth-fastest 200-meter time in history last Friday, finishing in 19.50 seconds at the Athletissima Diamond League meet. Lyles even ran into a slight headwind on a warm evening, going 0.08 seconds faster than Usain Bolt’s Lausanne track record set seven years ago. Only Michael Johnson among American sprinters, winning the 1996 Atlanta Olympics title in 19.32, has run the 200 faster than the 21-year-old Floridian. “The track here is burning up,” said Lyles, who leaned back and shouted skyward before posing for photographs next to the trackside clock. “It was about getting out strong. There is nothing better than seeing the accomplishments of what you have put in.” Bolt’s world record of 19.19 was set at the 2009 world championships in Berlin. His Jamaican teammate Yohan Blake ran 19.26 in Brussels in 2011. In other world-leading performances last Friday, Timothy Cheruiyot of Kenya won the men’s 1,500 in 3 minutes, 28.77 seconds, and pole vaulter Piotr Lisek of Poland cleared 6.01 meters. Lyles had been tied for eighth all-time for his 19.65 set at Monaco last year. “Each year I’m making a huge jump. I’m very satisfied,” said Lyles, who heads to U.S. nationals in three weeks at Des Moines, Iowa, aiming to make the 2019 worlds team. They open Sept. 28 in Doha, Qatar.

American sprinter Noah Lyles poses after setting a men’s 200m meeting record at the Diamond League athletics event in Lausanne, Switzerland, Friday, July 5.

His season-best had been 19.72 as runner-up to another 21-year-old American, Michael Norman, in Rome one month ago. Norman’s time of 19.70 at the Golden Gala meet had been the fastest in the world this year. On an ideal night for sprinting, two-time Olympic gold medalist Shelly-Ann FraserPryce dominated the women’s 100. Her 10.74 performance was just 0.01 outside the world-leading time Elaine Thompson and FraserPryce herself clocked at the Jamaica nationals last month. The 32-year-old FraserPryce, who missed the 2017 season to give birth to her first child, quickly ran clear to finish 0.17 ahead of Dina Asher-Smith, the European champion. Asher-Smith and the 2017 worlds silver and bronze medalists — Marie-Josée Ta Lou and Dafne Schippers — all clocked season-best times trailing far behind FraserPryce, the 2008 and 2012 Olympic champion. World champion Justin

Gatlin cruised to victory in the men’s 100 in 9.92, breaking clear before the midway point to leave fellow American Michael Rodgers trailing in 10.01. A fast men’s 1,500 saw the first six finishers beat the previous world-leading time this season. Behind Cheruiyot’s meet-record run, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, the 18-year-old European champion from Norway, ran a lifetime-best 3:30.16 in second place. A curious men’s 5,000 left Yomif Kejelcha ahead at the bell signaling one lap left after Hagos Gebrhiwet, the Olympic bronze medalist, slowed and saluted the crowd thinking he had won. Kejelcha timed 13 minutes, 0.56 seconds. Running the second-fastest women’s 400 this season, Nigeria-born Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain timed 49.17, just 0.02 ahead of Aminatou Seyni, setting a Nigerian record. Shamier Little of the U.S. won the 400 hurdles in 53.73, third best in the world this season.

The first try of the match, in the 25th minute, came from a chance turnover and superb work from the Crusaders tight forwards. Flanker Matt Todd forced a turnover after a high kick. The ball moved quickly to lock Sam Whitelock who dashed down the left touchline, passing inside to Taylor. Jaguares winger Matias Moroni missed a scoring chance near the end of the first half, losing the ball in two tackles near the goal line. The Crusaders broke out late, won a penalty and went to halftime leading 10-3. Moroni had a chance again at the start of the second half when he reclaimed his own

kick on the right flank but his pass to Matias Orlando was lost. The Crusaders were forced again to make many tackles and their defense proved equal to the task. Todd was held up over the line in the 51st minute and, when the Crusaders bulldozed the ensuing scrum, Mo’unga kicked a penalty for a 13-3 lead. As the scales tipped a little in the

Crusaders’ favor Mo’unga goaled for a 16-3 lead after 59 minutes. Moroni, again, had a chance from a cross kick in the 68th minute but the bounce beat him across the dead ball line. That was the last gasp from the Jaguares, who played superbly. Mo’unga landed a long-range penalty in the 75th minute to put the result beyond doubt.

During loss, Fabio Fognini says Wimbledon should be bombed London (AP) — Already on Grand Slam probation, top-10 player Fabio Fognini was in more trouble last Saturday after saying during his thirdround match at Wimbledon that he wanted a bomb to hit the All England Club. During a three-set loss to Tennys Sandgren at tiny Court 14, the 10th-ranked Fognini referred in Italian to the “damned English” and said he wished “a bomb would explode at the club.” More than 1,000 bombs fell in the area during World War II, destroying thousands of nearby homes, and 16 fell on the tournament grounds. One hit Centre Court. At his news conference Saturday, Fognini said his comments came in the heat of the moment. He said he was upset about not playing well and the condition of the court’s grass. “If I offended anyone, I apologize,” Fognini said in Italian. “That definitely wasn’t my intention.” The volatile Fognini, who is married to 2015 U.S. Open

champion Flavia Pennetta, also bloodied knuckles on his right hand after punching his racket during the match against Sandgren. An All England Club spokeswoman said there was no immediate comment from tournament officials. But the episode will be investigated to determine whether it rises to the level of a major offense, because he is still under a two-year probation stemming from

when he insulted a female chair umpire at the 2017 U.S. Open and got kicked out of that tournament. In October 2017, the Grand Slam Board said Fognini would be suspended for two major tournaments if he commits another major offense before the end of this year. He was docked a thenrecord $27,500 of his prize money at Wimbledon in 2014 for a series of outbursts during a first-round victory.

The FIA’s next round of silliness

Tesla S coming to Thailand? I was passed on the freeway the other day by a Tesla. It passed me so fast I was unable to keep up so I could look at the pointy end of the car. However, I did find a few articles dealing with the latest variation, the Model X Long Range. Forget range anxiety, this new Tesla has a 370 miles (600 km) range. What is more, Tesla announced the new powertrains, are applicable to all Model S and Model X variants. Whilst the battery remains the same as before, more efficient permanent magnet front motors, wheel bearings and tires, amongst other tweaks, have helped to improve efficiency very substantially. The range on each model has increased on the order of 10 percent to 12 percent. For the Long Range Model S, the EPA range rating has increased from 335 to 370 miles! The improved value proposition has been achieved whilst likely reducing Tesla’s internal costs (the new motor is a variant of the existing high-volume Model 3 motors). The Standard Range S and X are also now available

Karting Slalom and Digital Motorsport. “It is something new for not only motorsport followers and future generations of competitors, but also those with a general appreciation of international sport,” FIA President Jean Todt said. The Vallelunga circuit, just north of Rome, will host the

three-day event, which has its origins in the GT Nations Cup, held in November 2018 in Bahrain and won by a team from Turkey. The chances of this new format in motor sport becoming a ‘must go’ are extremely low, in my opinion. Have you heard of the Turkey Team GT Nations Cup? I certainly have not.

once more, and include the above 10–12 percent efficiency improvements. The new Tesla Model X Long Range, meanwhile, gets a 10 percent range boost to 500 km (EPA combined). Like the S, it is at its most efficient on highway cruises, and will likely get an EPA highway rating of at least 335 miles. That will put it at a full 50 percent greater highway range than the IPACE. Even the Model X Standard Range will likely have at least 260 miles of EPA-rated highway range, putting it 20 percent higher than the I-PACE. The Audi e-tron is even further behind, having an official EPA combined range of 321 km, and likely around 160 km (if that) on the EPA

highway cycle, despite its 95 kWh battery pack. (We don’t yet have the full EPA figures for the Audi, just the EPA combined range of 321 km). This means that even the Tesla Model X Standard Range has likely a 33 percent greater highway range than the Audi, and the Model X Long Range has a 72 percent greater highway range. Q2 of 2019, Tesla is very pleased to announce a record 95,000 cars out the door. For a start-up with no automotive background, Tesla really is a success story. General Motors should have listened to Bob Lutz. Start dry-storing your petrol engine cars now, we’ll all be electric in five years and queuing for gasoline within 10 years.

Bentley GT3 R for sale If you are interested in purchasing a Continental GT3 go to the Join Team Bentley page. (And make sure your credit card is good for about $300,000.) According to Bentley PR, W.O. Bentley promised always to build a “good car, fast car, best in its class” and this is no different with the race car. Development of the new Continental GT3 has been led with passion and innovation by the engineers of Bentley Motorsport’s in-house team based in Crewe, and supported

The FIA said on Friday the annual Motorsport Games will initially feature six categories: GT, Touring Car, Formula 4, Drifting,

across the car by designers and technicians at Bentley’s technical partner, M-Sport. The new GT3 race car was developed in tandem with the recently launched Continental GT road car, and the performance learnings are many. It utilises a mostly aluminium structure to deliver a much lighter, race-ready weight of significantly less than 1300 kg together with more even weight distribution – ideal for racing. One of the best circuits for the F1 circus is Silverstone. Loved by drivers and spectators alike, but now its position on the F1 calendar is in doubt. The Silverstone management has not signed a contract for 2020 and at the time of publication, the 2020 British GP is in doubt. What is the sticking point? Money, as usual. In effect, the 20 million pound fee Silverstone must pay to host the grand prix, which increases each year because of a clause detailing the increments. Silverstone is owned by the British Racing Drivers’ Club and the management rejects suggestions that government support should be possible in Britain as nonsense because government support did not save Turkey, India, and Malaysia which are no longer on the calendar. The British Grand Prix really is the ancestral home of F1, with the first ever F1 GP held there in 1950 (and won by Dr Farina in the Alfa Romeo, for the collectors of F1 history).

Silverstone.

This is a circuit that the drivers universally like, a circuit that allows cars to pass each other (even without the DRS and other buttons or coded messages from the pit wall), and a Grand Prix where it is likely to rain at some point. After all, it is in England, and they cannot possible go three days on the trot without a good drenching from above! The “arena” part of the circuit was used for the first time a few years back and goes from Abbey to Brooklands corners, moving infield and adds an extra 760 m to the track length. You will be heartened to read that Herr Tilke was not involved. Interestingly,

this modification was actually built for the MotoGP series, but now incorporated in the F1 series after Bernie, the patron saint of King Midas the Dwarf Enterprises, gave it his blessing. Yes, that is the same Bernie who has masterminded such yawnfest circuits as Bahrain and Singapore. But don’t start me. Now we have the Liberty Media to blame! God bless America. The Grand Prix will start at 8 p.m. and we watch at Fletchers Folly, Siam Country Club Road (opposite Maxxis and 300 meters before the “Chicken” intersection (Mitkamol). Let us hope we get another exciting race like Austria.

4.0-litre Bentley twin-turbo V8, with a redesigned dry sump system and all-new intake and exhaust systems. Unrestricted power is in excess of 570 bhp, fuel consumption is improved and despite reduced exhaust noise the sound is still unmistakably Bentley. Highly optimized road car intercoolers are used in the Continental GT3 to provide optimum engine performance. Exterior aerodynamic surfaces, based on the sleekly refined lines of the road car, provide additional down force. New suspension and braking systems are also bespoke to the car.

Detroit (AP) — Honda is recalling 1.6 million vehicles in the U.S. to replace potentially deadly Takata air bag inflators, completing its required recalls six months ahead of schedule, the automaker said Friday. When the latest recall is done, Honda says it will have recalled or accounted for 22.6 million inflators in about 12.9 million vehicles. Takata inflators can explode with too much force and blow apart a metal canister, spewing shrapnel. Twenty-four people have been killed and hundreds injured by the inflators worldwide. Honda was Takata’s largest customer. The Japanese company, which was forced into bankruptcy by the troubles, used the volatile chemical ammonium nitrate to create a small

explosion and inflate the air bags. But the chemical deteriorates when exposed to high temperatures and humidity and can burn to fast, blowing apart the canister designed to contain the explosion. The recalls include many Honda and Acura models from 2003 through 2015. All received replacement inflators made by Takata before February of 2017 and were scheduled to be recalled a second time to replace those with inflators made by another company. (Here is the list. Is your car safe?) Affected Honda models include the 2001-2012 Accord, the 2010-2015 Crosstour, the 2001-2011 Civic, 2002-2011 CR-V, the 2011-2015 CR-Z, the 2003-2011 Element, the 2007-2014 Fit, the 2010-2014 Insight, the 2002-2004 Odyssey, the 2003-2015 Pilot and the 2006-2014 Ridgeline. Acura models include the 2003 3.2CL, the 2013 ILX, the 2003-2006 MDX, the 2015 RDX, the 2005-2012 RL, the 2002-2003 3.2TL, the 20092014 TL, the 2009-2014 TSX,

and the 2010-2013 ZDX. Honda said it has completed repairs or accounted for 83 percent of the inflators, among the highest in the auto industry. Some of the inflators have been found in scrap yards or the vehicles are no longer in use. Owners will be notified by letters starting in mid-August, and Honda is urging people to schedule repairs as soon as possible. Nineteen automakers are recalling about 70 million inflators in what has become the largest string of automotive recalls in U.S. history. The recalls are taking place on a schedule set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The recalls do not include inflators that have a moisture-absorbing chemical. The government will decide by the end of this year whether those should be recalled. (We have heat and humidity, but no explosions recorded. Hopefully the old local Hondas have the moisture absorbing chemical installed.)

26 FRIDAY JULY 12, 2019

On August 15, 1947, the Indian Independence Bill took effect, inaugurating self rule and freedom from the British Raj. It is often said that the British left India with two important features – one was the railway and the other was the English language. However, these days I would add Indian cuisine to those preceding two features, and so the Dining Out team went to the Crown of India to experience Indian cuisine as they saw it.

A feast fit for a king.

Crown of India.

An interesting background to Indian cuisine in Pattaya is that the long-established Ali Baba and Crown of India are run by the same family, so we couldn’t help indulging in comparisons. The menu is mainly photographic and there is no mistaking this restaurant’s

VOL. XXVII No. 28

It begins with Starters (50300 baht) featuring Aloo Chat and Onion Bhaji and they are followed by Kebabs (veg 220-265 baht) and (nonveg 240-400) with Tandoori prawns at the top end. Mains range from 125-330 baht and cover chicken, mutton, fish, prawns and even an egg curry. For those not au fait with Indian cuisine, Crown of India offers Thali plates with

Chicken Tikka, Lamb curry, Chicken curry, Dahl, Pilau rice, Vegetable Jhalfrezi, Roti and a dessert. At 400 baht for a Thali plate, I considered this to be very inexpensive, and the Dining Out Team can certainly recommend the Crown of India both for the food and the prices. There is the usual choice of breads (25-140 baht) and rice. While perusing the menu we had a glass of the house white. My suspicions were proved correct – we were

drinking Mont Clair from the box, but I must say that Mont Clair was eminently quaffable with the spicy Indian food. (Or perhaps my palate was ‘off’ that evening!) With a team of four, it was possible for us to try many dishes. The kitchen staff was kept busy with: Pappadoms (Special Indian Crackers) (50 baht), Aloo Chaat (Spicy Potato Salad) (110 baht), Onion Bhaji (Onion Fritters with Indian Masala) (100 baht), Vegetable Samosa (Potato Patties Punjabi Style), Paneer Tikka (Cottage Cheese Marinated with Indian Spices and cooked in Tandoor), Butter Chicken (Chicken tikka cooked in butter and tomato gravy) (230 baht), Rogan Josh (Kashmiri Style Lamb Curry) (290 baht), Lamb Biryani (Fried Rice Biryani Style with Lamb), Pulao Rice

Paneer Tikka (Cottage Cheese marinated with Indian spices and cooked in Tandoor).

(Yellow Rice with Spices), Bhindi Masala (Okra in Masala Gravy) (160 baht), Dal Tadka (Yellow Lentils) (140 baht), Raita (yoghurt) (80 baht), Garlic and Butter Naan (60 and 55 baht). We shared and we enj o y e d , w i t h t h e Butter chicken being my pick of the evening.

The Dining Out team went to the Crown of India to experience Indian cuisine as they saw it.

So, in the ‘unofficial’ Indian cuisine face-off, Crown of India presented excellent dishes, with marginally more choices than its sister and on a head to head comparison comes on top (just). The ambience, however, is more Indian at Ali Baba with the alcoves, while Crown sets the tables out in cafeteria fashion. It was a most enjoyable dinner and we think the final decision as to where to eat will probably be down to ease of parking. Place over a charcoal BBQ or under the grill until partially cooked. Mix sake, soya sauce and sugar and pour into a wide flat bowl. Lay skewered chicken in the marinade for five minutes, then turn over and leave for another five minutes. Now return to the BBQ and grill for another two minutes each side. After this, return to the marinade and repeat the marinade process. Now complete the final BBQ grilling while brushing the remaining marinade over the skewered chicken, to produce a dark shiny glaze.
