As Pattaya grew, the government issued the Pattaya City Administration Act of 1978, dissolving Naklua Sanitation District and Pattaya City was born. The city has been administered under a special autonomous system of city management since November 29, 1978.
The fireworks got out of control on one of the launch boats, with a fire that required emergency personnel to extinguish. Sparks from the falling pyrotechnics onto fuel supplies are believed to have set off the blaze on the barge from which the display for the International Fireworks Show were launched in Pattaya Bay Dec. 1. British drug ‘kingpin’ on run after 3 Aussie Hells Angels arrested in Pattaya Teerarak Suthathiwong Police have launched a manhunt for a British man alleged to be the kingpin of a Pattaya-based drug-smuggling operation after arresting three Australian motorcycle gang cohorts and three others. Tihomer Stojic, 47, was arrested at his girlfriend’s house in Buri Ram Nov. 28 while Jamie Robert Hanson, 46, and Steven Brett Hovi, 58, were captured in separate raids on their Pattaya homes a day earlier. The Aussies’ girlfriends – Jiraporn Kiatsutthachit, 35, and Wirapha Ungsri, 34 – also were arrested along with Nigerian Chimezie Stanley Duru, 38. All those arrested are alleged to be involved in smuggling methamphetamines and heroin from Thailand to the Hells Angels and Comanchero motorcycle gangs in Australia. The head of that smuggling ring, police told British media, is U.K. national Christopher Depp, who fled Pattaya and remains at large.
Tihomer Stojic was arrested at his girlfriend’s house in Buri Ram.
Stojic had fled his Cozy Beach View condominium for Issan after his alleged accomplices were arrested. He was brought back and police searched the Soi Kasetin residence, finding a 20 grams of crystal meth hidden in his Mercedes-Benz, along with a small amount of marijuana. He was charged with possession with intent to sell a Class 1 narcotic and possession of a Class 5 drug. The drug haul was much larger a day before when Region 2 police frantically scaled closed gates at the
two properties and broke down doors to keep the element of surprise. Hanson and Hovi were caught with 1.1 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine, a handgun, drug paraphernalia, and financial records of a million baht in drug deals. The drug raids – staged with the cooperation of the Australian Federal Police – were characterized as a major blow against violent Aussie bike gangs which increasingly have used Pattaya and Thailand as a base for international drug-smuggling.

10 years later, U-Tapao second terminal finally opens Patcharapol Panrak Ten years after it was first announced, a second passenger terminal at U-Tapao Rayong-Pattaya International Airport has finally opened, tripling the military airport’s capacity. Prime Minister Prayut Chano-cha opened the facility Dec. 4, saying it marks another step toward the navy air field becoming a fully commercial airport. It will help stimulate the domestic economy and serve as a gateway to the Eastern Economic Corridor, he added. The Prime Minister then visited an exhibition and facilities inside the new terminal with navy commander-in-chief Adm. Luechai Ruddit. Luechai said U-Tapao currently handles about 2 million passengers a year and 15,000 flights. The tiny original terminal – dating back to 1989 – was only designed to handle 700,000 passengers a year. The new terminal will see U-Tapao expand flight operations to 18 airlines on 36 routes to China, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Vice Adm. Kritchapol Rengjumnong, the airport’s director, said the perception of U-Tapao as a military airport is outdated. He said the entire area has seen commercial

development and the air field took up some of the slack when Suvarnabhumi International Airport was closed by anti-government protestors in 2008. With its long runway built by the U.S. military during the Vietnam War, U-Tapao also can handle the biggest of jetliners, including an Airbus A380 that diverted to UTapao after an in-air emergency in April 2018.
A Tortured History The opening of the new terminal comes 10 years after the government – in the wake of the 2008 protests – announced a 995-million-baht plan to transform U-Tapao into a modern international air hub, new parking facilities, fuel depot, fire-fighting
systems, x-ray machines and improvements to other equipment and landscaping. While ground for the terminal was broken in 2011 and the fire, fuel and X-ray system purchased in 2014, the terminal – originally estimated at 468 million baht – had only its foundation laid. The project’s original contractor first said it could not deliver the terminal on time, then insisted the budget was too small to do the job at all. The contractor was fired and work stopped while the project was put out for bid, coming in at 619 million baht. The May 2014 military coup then stalled the construction work until 2016 when Prayut finally endorsed a new development plan.

Experts say Mekong River’s new color a worrying sign
FRIDAY DECEMBER 13, 2019 7
Elon Musk cleared of defamation in ‘pedo guy’ tweet trial Brian Melley
Busaba Sivasomboon Bangkok (AP) — The Mekong River has recently acquired an aquamarine color that may beguile tourists but also indicates a problem caused by upstream dams, experts in Thailand say. The river usually has a yellowish-brown shade due to the sediment it normally carries downstream. But lately it has been running clear, taking on a blue-green hue that is a reflection of the sky. The water levels have also become unusually low, exposing sandbanks that allow the curious to stand in the middle of the river. Low water levels pose an obvious problem for fishermen and farmers, but experts say the decline in sediment exposes a different danger that can result in greater erosion of the river’s banks and bed. The experts and people living along the river blame a large hydroelectric dam upstream in Laos that began operating in October for contributing to both problems, though rainfall has also been sparse. Around 70 million people depend on the Mekong River for water, food, commerce, irrigation and transportation. Critics charge that large-scale development projects such as the Xayaburi dam dangerously disrupt the region’s ecology. The dam blocks much sediment from moving further downstream, which accounts for the water becoming clear, said Pravit Kanthaduang, chief of the fishery office at Bueng Khong Long, a district in Thailand’s Bueng Kan province. Less sediment means less nutrition for plants and fish in the river, threatening the ecological balance, he said.
In this Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2019, photo, fishing boats are moored in Mekong River, which has turned blue instead of its usual muddy color, in Nakhon Phanom province, northeastern Thailand. (AP Photo/ Chessadaporn Buasai)
With less sediment, the water also has more stream power, a phenomenon known as “hungry water,” said Chainarong Setthachau of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Science at Mahasarakham University in Thailand’s northeast who has studied changes in the Mekong’s ecology for the past two decades. “The current has less sediment, which unleashes energy onto the river banks downstream. This so-called ‘hungry water’ will cause much more erosion to the banks, uprooting trees and damaging engineering structures in the river,” Chainarong said. The dam’s developers have denied that they were responsible for low water levels that some critics tied to trial runs of the generators that began in March. In October, the Xayaburi Power Co. Ltd. said the project has spent more than 19.4 billion baht ($640 million) to mitigate negative impacts on the environment, including the building of outlets for sediment passage and flow and facilities to allow the passage of fish. The plant’s total cost was $4.47 billion.
Daeng Pongpim, from a farming family that used to fish in Ta Mui village in Ubon Ratchathani province, lives 800 kilometers (500 miles) downstream from the Xayaburi dam, but said she still believes it is responsible for the river’s recent unusual condition. “I am 67 years old and have never seen anything like it before. What makes me concerned the most is the low level of the water. Now, we are in early winter, the water level should not be this low. I can’t imagine how hard it could be for us at the height of the dry season, in March and April.” Chaiwat Parakun, who lives 200 kilometers (125 miles) downstream from the dam, said he abandoned his fishing gear several years ago because of the declining amount of fish available to catch. He now has a tourism business. “The Mekong has gradually lost its abundance. People who depend on the river like us could sense it many years ago. But that was nothing like the effects from Xayaburi. We cannot figure out how we can live with this degraded environment,” he said.
Los Angeles (AP) — Elon Musk defeated defamation allegations Friday from a British cave explorer who claimed he was branded a pedophile when the Tesla CEO called him “pedo guy” in an angry tweet. Vernon Unsworth, who participated in the rescue of 12 boys and their soccer coach trapped for weeks in a Thailand cave last year, had sought $190 million in damages for the shame and humiliation caused by the man his lawyer called a “billionaire bully.” It took less than an hour for an eight-person jury in Los Angeles federal court to reject Unsworth’s claim after a four-day trial. Musk said the verdict restored his faith in humanity as he quickly left the court with his security detail. Musk — who deleted the tweet and later apologized for it — had asserted the expression was nothing more than a flippant insult that meant “creepy old man,” not pedophile. Unsworth had provoked the attack by belittling Musk’s contribution to the rescue — a miniature sub his engineers built that was never used — as ineffective and nothing more than a “PR stunt.” He further earned the ire of the tech whiz by suggesting Musk stick the sub “where it hurts.” On Friday, it was Unsworth who felt the pain. “I accept the jury verdict, take it on the chin, and move on,” Unsworth said outside court. Jury foreman Joshua Jones said the panel decided Unsworth’s lawyers failed to prove their case. He said they spent too much

time trying to appeal to jurors’ emotions and not concentrating on the evidence. Attorney Lin Wood, in an impassioned and at times emotional closing argument, suggested the jury should award $190 million. Wood said $150 million of that figure should be a “hard slap on the wrist” to punish Musk for what he said was akin to dropping an atomic weapon on his client that would create problems for years like radioactive fallout. He suggested the figure would be reasonable given that Musk testified his stock in Tesla and SpaceX is worth about $20 billion. But Musk’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, ridiculed the suggested verdict as “numbers being thrown out like ‘The Price is Right.’” Wood said it was important to challenge Musk’s tweet in court even if they didn’t win. Unsworth had said the statement would appear true if he didn’t sue. “Anybody that knows this man knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that Elon’s accusations were false,” Wood said outside court. “This was not the justice that he deserved under the evidence.” Musk’s lawyer told the jury the tweet did not rise to the level of defamation and cases over insults didn’t belong in federal courtrooms. Spiro said Unsworth had tried to profit off his role in the cave rescue and basked in the many accolades he received.
Unsworth had been honored by the queen of England and the king of Thailand, had his photo taken next to British Prime Minister Theresa May and been asked to speak at schools and contribute to a children’s book, which showed that no one took Musk’s insult seriously. “People accused of pedophilia don’t get celebrated by world leaders,” Spiro said. “Kings and queens and prime ministers don’t stand next to pedophiles.” Unsworth hadn’t demonstrated actual damage to his reputation other than asserting over a couple minutes of emotional testimony delivered with his voice cracking that he felt isolated, ashamed and dirtied, Spiro said. There was no supporting testimony from his girlfriend or other friends who could discuss the impact they witnessed, no evidence he had lost business or relationships as a result of the tweet and he hadn’t sought psychological counseling or medication. Spiro mocked Unsworth’s claims that the tweet was like a life sentence without parole, noting that many people are serving such terms in actual prisons. He urged jurors to return a verdict that would make clear no reasonable person would conclude Musk had called him a pedophile. “Tell Mr. Unsworth once and for all, ‘You are not a pedophile,’” Spiro said. “With our verdict, we free you, we free you from parole.”

Facebook said that as it worked on a new set of data portability tools, it had discussions with policymakers, regulators, and academics in the U.K., Germany, Brazil and Singapore to learn about which data should be portable and how to protect privacy. New York (AP) — Cyber Monday is still holding up as the biggest online shopping day of the year, even though many of the same deals have been available online for weeks and the name harks back to the days of dial-up modems. Shoppers are expected to spend a record $9.4 billion on purchases made on their phones and computers Monday, up about 19% from last year’s Cyber Monday, according to Adobe Analytics, which tracks transactions at 80 of the top 100 U.S. online stores. The busiest time is expected to be in the hour before midnight, as people race to take advantage of discounts before they disappear. Cyber Monday was created by retailers in 2005 to get people to shop online at a time when high-speed internet was rare and the iPhone didn’t exist. The idea was to encourage people to shop at work, where faster connections made it easier to browse, when they returned from the Thanksgiving break. “It’s somewhat antiquated,” said Rob Graf, vice president

of strategy and insights at cloud computing company Salesforce, which tracks shopping behavior of the online stores that use its platform. “But retailers are still using it as a big milestone and driving heavy discounts.” At least one brand played up Cyber Monday’s origins: Bonobos, the men’s clothing seller owned by Walmart Inc., photographed models posing with clunky computers
and black-and-white TVs for its site. “Boot up the dial-up,” one of its Cyber Monday ads said. On average, retailers offered 30% off on Monday, the steepest discounts of the year, according to Salesforce. Some have been offering deals for days. Amazon started offering Cyber Monday deals on Saturday, calling the three-day extravaganza “Cyber Monday Weekend.”
Walmart kicked off online discounts for the holidays a week before Halloween. It was a way to combat the shortened holiday shopping season. Thanksgiving is always celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. This year, that was Nov. 28, cutting the typical time between Thanksgiving and Christmas by nearly a week, making it the shortest stretch between the two holidays since 2013. Adobe said the bestselling toys on Cyber Monday were those related to the “Frozen 2” movie, “Paw Patrol” show and the LOL Surprise brand. TVs from Samsung and laptops by Apple were also hot sellers. And Amazon’s devices, such as its voice activated Echo, did well, too. Not all online shopping ended with a box being delivered. Despite frightful weather in parts of the U.S. this weekend, buying online and picking up in a store has become a popular option, growing 43% so far from last year. “These services are breathing new life into physical stores,” Adobe said. “And we expect growth to climb as we get closer to Christmas.”
Russian scientists present ancient puppy found in permafrost

Daria Litvinova & Roman Kutukov Yakutsk, Russia (AP) — Russian scientists on Monday showed off a prehistoric puppy, believed to be 18,000 years old, found in permafrost in the country’s Far East. Discovered last year in a lump of frozen mud near the city of Yakutsk, the puppy is unusually well-preserved, with its hair, teeth, whiskers and eyelashes still intact. “This puppy has all its limbs, pelage – fur, even whiskers. The nose is visible. There are teeth. We can determine due to some data that it is a male,” Nikolai Androsov, director of the Northern World private museum where the
remains are stored, said at the presentation at the Yakutsk’s Mammoth Museum which specializes in ancient specimens. In recent years, Russia’s Far East has provided many riches for scientists studying the remains of ancient animals. As the permafrost melts, affected by climate change, more and more parts of woolly mammoths, canines and other prehistoric animals are being discovered. Often it is mammoth tusk hunters who discover them. “Why has Yakutia come through a real spate of such unique findings over the last decade? First, it’s global warming. It really exists, we feel it, and local people feel it strongly. Winter comes

later, spring comes earlier,” Sergei Fyodorov, scientist with the North Eastern Federal University, told The Associated Press. “And the second very serious, deep reason, of why there a lot of finds is the very high price of mammoth tusk in the Chinese market.” When the puppy was discovered, scientists from the Stockholm-based Center for Palaeogenetics took a piece of bone to study its DNA. “The first step was of course to send the sample to radio carbon dating to see how old it was and when we got the results back it turned out that it was roughly 18,000 years old,” Love Dalén, professor of evolutionary
genetics at the center, said in an online interview. Further tests, however, left the scientists with more questions than answers — they couldn’t definitively tell whether it was a dog or a wolf. “We have now generated a nearly complete genome sequence from it and normally when you have a twofold coverage genome, which is what we have, you should be able to relatively easily say whether it’s a dog or a wolf, but we still can’t say and that makes it even more interesting,” Dalén said. He added that the scientists are about to do a third round of genome sequencing, which might solve the mystery.

“Sugar”? One lump or two? Diabetes (“sugar”) is in the news again, but it isn’t “good” news. There are 60 million people living in the UK (I’d probably say ‘surviving’ in the UK is more accurate) and 2.1 million of these have been diagnosed as Diabetic, of which 1.8 million had the Maturity Onset form of the condition. Official estimation from the UK would also suggest there were another 1 million walking around with Mature Onset Diabetes that did not even know they had it. That’s a worry. Not for me, but for them. So who gets it? Are you more than 40 years of age? Are you overweight? Do you have a blood relative who has Diabetes? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, then you may have Mature Onset Diabetes. If you answered “yes” to all three, then it is pounds to peanuts that you do have it. (If you come from Holland, you can make that Guilders to gooseberries!) Just exactly what is Diabetes? Quite simply, it is an inability of the body to handle glucose correctly. Insulin is produced by the pancreas to keep the glucose system in balance and if the insulin production is lacking, this is called Type 1 Diabetes. With Mature Onset Diabetes (also called Type 2, or Non-Insulin Dependent Diabetes Mellitus) the cells become less responsive to insulin, and there may be a reduction in insulin levels as well.
Insulin is necessary for the body to be able to use glucose for energy. When you eat food, the body breaks down all of the sugars and starches into glucose, which is the basic fuel for the cells in the body. Insulin takes the sugar from the blood into the cells. When glucose builds up in the blood instead of going into cells, it can cause many problems. First off, your cells may be starved for energy, so you begin to feel tired. Secondly, over time you may develop heart disease (cardiovascular problems), blindness (retinopathy), nerve damage (neuropathy), and kidney damage (nephropathy). So how do you know if you have developed (or are developing) Mature Onset Diabetes? The main symptoms to look for include a lack of energy, hunger (which comes from the fact that the cells are ‘starving’), excessive passing of urine combined with thirst and a dry mouth, insufficient sleep because of the need to pass urine at night (though this may be due to prostate enlargement in males) and blurred vision (again not to be confused with reading difficulties – short arms – which is called Presbyopia and occurs after 40 years of age), slow healing of minor cuts and sores. How does Diabetes cause such diverse symptoms? Large blood vessels may be damaged by atherosclerosis, which is a major cause of coronary artery disease and stroke. Other long-term complications result from damage to the small blood vessels throughout the body. Damage to blood vessels in
the light-sensitive retina at the back of the eye causes the visual impairment (diabetic retinopathy). Diabetes also increases the risk of developing cataracts. If diabetes affects blood vessels that supply nerves, it may cause nerve damage. There may be a gradual loss of sensation, starting with the hands and feet and sometimes gradually extending up the limbs. Loss of feeling, combined with poor circulation, makes the feet and legs more susceptible to ulcers and gangrene. The nerve and blood vessel damage may also produce impotence in men (which Vitamin V may not be able to fix). Damage to small blood vessels in the kidneys may also lead to further complications. Damage to the nerves controlling the body’s internal functions (autonomic neuropathy) can lead to problems with low blood pressure on standing (postural hypotension) or disturbance of the GI tract (vomiting or diarrhea) and increases the risk of sudden cardiac death. So if you think you might have it, or are a likely candidate, what next? A simple trip to your doctor and some inexpensive blood and urine tests will confirm or deny. In the initial stages, dietary measures may be sufficient to control this condition, but oral medication and sometimes insulin injections become necessary as it progresses. But find out if you have it first!
Study: For babies born with HIV, start treatment right away Lauran Neergaard Washington (AP) — When babies are born with HIV, starting treatment within hours to days is better than waiting even the few weeks to months that’s the norm in many countries, researchers reported Wednesday. The findings, from a small but unique study in Botswana, could influence care in Africa and other regions hit hard by the virus. They also might offer a clue in scientists’ quest for a cure. The Harvard-led team found super early treatment limits how HIV takes root in a
newborn’s body, shrinking the “reservoir” of virus that hides out, ready to rebound if those youngsters ever stop their medications. “We don’t think the current intervention is itself curative, but it sets the stage” for future attempts, said Dr. Daniel Kuritzkes of Boston’s Brigham and Women’s Hospital, who coauthored the study. Giving pregnant women a cocktail of anti-HIV drugs can prevent them from spreading the virus to their unborn children, a step that has dramatically reduced the number of babies born with

the virus worldwide. Still, some 300 to 500 infants are estimated to be infected every day in sub-Saharan Africa. Doctors have long known that treating babies in the first weeks to months of life is important, because their developing immune systems are especially vulnerable to HIV. But an infant dubbed the “Mississippi baby” raised a critical question: Should treatment start even earlier? The girl received a threedrug combination within 30 hours of her birth in July 2010, highly unusual for the time. Her family quit treatment when she was a toddler — yet her HIV remained in remission for a remarkable 27 months before she relapsed and restarted therapy. The Botswana study was one of several funded by the U.S. National Institutes of Health after doctors learned of the Mississippi baby, to
further explore very early treatment. The findings are encouraging, said Dr. Deborah Persaud, a pediatric HIV specialist at Johns Hopkins University who wasn’t involved with the Botswana study but helped evaluate the Mississippi baby. “The study showed what we hypothesized happened in the Mississippi baby, that very early treatment really prevents establishment of these long-lived reservoir cells that currently are the barrier to HIV eradication,” Persaud said. She cautioned: “Very early treatment is important, but prevention should still be our top priority.” In Botswana, researchers tested at-risk newborns, enrolling 40 born with HIV, treating them within hours to a few days, and tracking them for two years. On
Wednesday, they reported results from the first 10 patients, comparing them with 10 infants getting regular care — treatment beginning when they were a few months old. Medication brought HIV under control in both groups. But the children treated earliest had a much smaller reservoir of HIV in their blood, starting about six months into treatment, the researchers reported in Science Translational Medicine. The earliest-treated children also got another benefit: more normal functioning of some key parts of the immune system.
One big question: Did the HIV reservoir shrink enough to make a long-term difference? To find out, next year the researchers will give these children experimental antibodies designed to help keep HIV in check, and test how they fare with a temporary stop to their anti-HIV drugs. In the U.S., Europe and South Africa, it’s becoming common to test at-risk infants at birth. But in most lower-income countries, babies aren’t tested until they’re 4 to 6 weeks old, said study co-author Dr. Roger Shapiro, a Harvard infectious disease specialist.

No easy mark: Female bodybuilder, 82, clobbers intruder Rochester, N.Y. (AP) — An intruder didn’t count on an 82year-old woman living alone being an award-winning bodybuilder with nerves of steel. Willie Murphy was getting ready for bed Thursday at her home in Rochester, New York, when a man pounded on the door and said he needed an ambulance, Murphy told WHAM. She called police but wouldn’t open the door. Then, she said, the man broke in and skulked through the dark house. “He picked the wrong house to break into,” Murphy said. She clobbered him with a table, poured shampoo in his face and was beating him with a broom when police arrived. “I was whaling on that man,” Murphy told the Democrat and Chronicle. “‘Cause I said to myself, ‘If it’s my time to go to hell, I’m taking him with me!’” The man got his ambulance ride, after all. He was sent to a hospital, and police tweeted a selfie with Murphy, calling her “tough as nails.” Murphy works out almost daily at Rochester’s Maplewood YMCA and said she can deadlift 225 pounds — more than twice her weight. She can do onehanded pullups and one-handed pushups. She won the World Natural Powerlifting Federation Lifter of the Year award in 2014. “She really helps dispel the myths of aging,” said Michelle LeBoo, a program coordinator at the Maplewood YMCA. Murphy is “a strong, beautiful woman” who does things “for the benefit of others,” LeBoo said. Murphy said she hopes her story inspires people of all ages.

Man found in freezer was husband of recently deceased woman Salt Lake City (AP) — A man whose body was in a freezer for as long as 11 years was the husband of the woman who had recently died in their apartment west of Salt Lake City, police said Tuesday. But the autopsy that nailed down his identity didn’t help investigators solve how he died, who killed him or exactly how long his body was tucked into the chest freezer inside the couple’s apartment, said Tooele Police Sgt. Jeremy Hansen. Officers discovered the body of Paul Edwards Mathers, 69, last Friday after finding his wife dead on the bed when they went there to check on her after she hadn’t been seen in two weeks. Detectives couldn’t tell from looking at the fully intact body how he died, but suspect foul play, Hansen said. The death of his wife, Jeanne Souron-Mathers, 75, is not considered suspicious. They don’t know if she was involved in her husband’s death, Hansen said. Detectives estimate the man’s body was in the freezer from between 1 and 11 years based on when residents in the apartment complex say they last saw him. The autopsy didn’t narrow down that time frame, Hansen said. Souron-Mathers had lived in the apartment since 2007 in the city of Tooele, which has about 35,000 residents and is about 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of Salt Lake City.

Ruff ride: Florida dog bumps car into motion, gets solo trip Port St. Lucie, Fla. (AP) — Florida authorities say they responded to a rogue vehicle spinning in reverse around a suburban cul-de-sac with a lone occupant inside: a Black Labrador. News outlets report residents called police Thursday after seeing the dog trapped and clambering around in the car as it spun in circles in a Port St. Lucie neighborhood. Police say they think the dog’s owner stepped away from the running car and that’s when the pet knocked it into reverse. Neighbor Anne Sabol says she watched the furry speed racer take out a mailbox and a trash can. Sabol says the dog was in high spirits after being rescued, adding it “jumped out of the car, wagging his tail.” Police stopped the joyride by punching a passcode into the driver’s door. Photographic dangers
Photography is not thought of as a dangerous or contact sport. However, photography has its dangers, and I have been on the receiving end. Let me state from the outset that the situation did not involve outraged art directors or clients unhappy with the billing. The shoot involved a bottle of vodka and a glass with ice cubes illustrating vodka on the rocks. To give the impression that the bottle and the glass were “floating” it was necessary to use a grey seamless background paper. Seamless backgrounds are generally about two meters wide with probably 40 meters in the roll. The way this works is you run the seamless down the wall and gently curve it into
the flat surface on which the object to be photographed is sitting. This means there is no “seam” or line between the back wall and the floor. My game plan was to have a sheet of glass on some low stands, lit from underneath. I cut out the circle to match the vodka bottle, and another for the shot glass with the ice cubes in it. With the light from below, the vodka bottle would really stand out, as would the glass with ice cubes. Having experienced ‘melt down’ with real ice cubes on another shoot, I prepared myself this time with some acrylic ‘ice’ cubes. Now nothing could go wrong. The items were put in place on the grey seamless on top of the glass sheet. The other end of the roll of seamless was hung on the wall on hooks already placed there. Now to get the focus correct we use ‘modeling’ lights. These are tungsten globes which allows the photographer to position the flash heads to get the lighting
Hello Hillary, I just wonder what some of my compatriots are thinking. Let me tell you of a typical story of relationship between farang and Thai girl which I witnessed. I was on the car-taxi traveling along Beach Road and across of me sat a British man very old at least 80 with a young girl in her 20’s. The man kept talking to her and even me, American, had problem understanding what he said with his heavy British accent. She obviously didn’t understand a word. Her fingers were full of gold plus wedding band. The following is what she was thinking. “I married this old dude and he won’t die, I hope he die soon so I can get all his money. When he die my family and I will have a big celebration. He probably think I am stupid, he is right, but I will hire a very smart lawyer who will get me all his money.” Here’s the real situation - any old man can hire a live in maid who will do the same work as wife. Wouldn’t an old foolish man prefer that his money will go to his children? Or grandchildren? Is it just for sex? At 80 he can not perform and if he chews the blue diamonds he might die from heart attack. And she gets the money again. Gregory Dear Gregory, You, my Petal, are certainly one of this week’s most judgmental persons. Just what is wrong with your 80 year old enjoying his money in his retirement? These children of his that you say the 80 year old would prefer to give his money to are all 50-60 years old themselves. They get the pension and can spend their own money on wine, women and song. And how do you know our 80 year old can’t perform? Leave him alone to enjoy his 25 year old girlfriend.

needed. With the bottle and glass being lit from below, this was quite a tricky exercise which took a little time. Finally we were ready to pull the first Polaroid and as I said, “Go!” there was a huge bang and the montage on the glass of vodka and ice all toppled into the middle of the set, bringing the grey
seamless with it, pulling the roll off the hooks on the wall. The roll looked as if it would hit the camera on its tripod so I moved to shield it, with the result that it hit my head, knocking me out and I fell on the floor hugging the camera to my chest. And what about my assistant? She saved the vodka bottle!
Or enjoy trying, if nothing else. But your letter does remind me of the 70 year old walking down the street with a gorgeous 17 year old hanging on to his arm. When his mates all asked how did he snare such a beauty he replied, “It was easy, I lied about my age. I told her I was 90.” Dear Hillary, You have often mentioned books that newcomers to Thailand should read and you should add “Falangs in Thailand” to that list. These cartoon books by Pattaya Mail’s Mike Baird are based on truth and everyone who laughs at the drawings should also remember that (it is based on truth). The cartoonist must have spent a lot of time watching what goes on in Pattaya, but what he shows is the same for Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai. “Private Dancer” by Stephen Leather is another book that anyone who spends time in the bars should read. Stay here long enough and it will happen to you, so be warned. I hope this helps, Hillary. I enjoy your column. Kevin Dear Kevin, I am so glad you like my weekly (weakly some days) column. Thank you for the information about suitable books, and I am with you and have enjoyed all of Mike’s books and do agree with your ideas. Unfortunately, I think many young chaps who come here (and some not so young as well) don’t seem to be able to read. Perhaps the cartoon
After I came to, we worked out just what had happened. The tungsten lights under the glass plate heated it up too much and it cracked through the middle and taking a V shape, pulling the seamless paper off the glass and dislodging the full roll
The picture of this monkey was not taken by a wildlife photographer, but by the monkey itself. The world’s first simian selfie. We can use this selfie, as there is no copyright for the image, as it has been uploaded to Wiki Commons. The guy who owned the camera says he owns the copyright, but Wiki says that, since the monkey took the photo, technically the copyright would belong to the monkey. But since copyright law states that copyrights cannot be assigned to non-humans, there is no copyright on it. All very interesting, and in some ways a bit silly, but that is the way the world is heading.
Read more news at pattayamail.com books will be better for them, pictures rather than words, as long as they realize that Mike Baird is being very satirical. We can only hope, Petal. We can only hope. Dear Hillary, What kind of person comes to Pattaya for their holiday and then meets a Buddhist holiday and loudly claims their holiday has been ruined because they couldn’t drink for a day? If you can’t go a day with no alcohol without it ruining things for you, you have a lot bigger problem than choosing the wine for dinner. John Dear John, (I still get a kick out of responding “Dear John” as I don’t get much opportunity for “Dear John” letters anymore!) Now to this alcohol problem of yours. You are correct that it isn’t a good sign if you can’t make 24 hours without a tipple. You must have heard the old joke, “What’s the difference between a drunk and an alcoholic? Answer: alcoholics have to go to the meetings.” (And I know the joke is probably not PC, but everyone should be able to look a little lightheartedly at life.) But going back to the start of this, if the alcohol you are missing is really under the terminology of plonk, then you probably do need a daily shot, so keep a bottle or two for emergencies. But if you’re like me and have to hang out for Veuve Clicquot (even NV will do, Petal) you learn to curb the cravings.

Most of them, he said, are here illegally, with no travel documents or citizen rights and largely receive no education. Therefore, Capaldi said, the children are at risk for exploitation, abuse and human trafficking. Although Thailand has cracked down on traffickers, he said, the at-risk children still have difficulties in accessing their rights under the law. Capaldi said his research of

It will continue to fly to the U.S. from Oslo and routes to Europe are not affected. Senior Vice President Matthew Wood said Scandinavia “is not large enough to maintain intercontinental flights from Oslo, Stockholm and Copenhagen.” He added that Norwegian has “had challenges with the Rolls Royce engines,” meaning “more aircraft on the ground. This affects the route program.” Like other airlines trying to provide budget flights on

long-distance routes, the Oslo-based company has struggled to make profits. This month it said it had raised 2.5 billion kroner ($273 million) in gross proceeds through a private placement and a convertible bond issue of $150 million which allows the company to be “fully funded through 2020 and beyond.” In March, Norwegian grounded its 18 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft after two deadly crashes which had affected
demand, operating expenses and production negatively. It also said it was postponing the delivery of Airbus aircraft - both A320neos and A321LRs - to reduce its capital expenditure by approximately $570 million in 2019 and 2020. Jacob Schram was chosen as to become CEO from Jan. 1, succeeding Bjoern Kjos, who turned the small domestic carrier into a global airline over 17 years as chief executive.

Dancing the Night Away Zoltán Kodály (18821967): Dances of Galánta. Symphony Orchestra of Galicia cond. Dima Slobodeniouk (Duration: 19:36; Video: 1080p HD)
Alberto Ginastera.
Nobody knows when humans started dancing, but it must have been a very long time ago. It was probably a natural expression of joy or elation or perhaps even – in its early days – frenetic body motions to frighten away undesirable animals. It would be centuries before the concept of ritual dancing emerged. But of course, all this is so far back in human history that we simply don’t know. Your guess it as good as mine and to be honest, probably better. We know that formalized dancing was practised among the ancient Greeks, because various household objects such as drinking vessels, depict images of dancers and musicians. Even so, we don’t know very much about what the music actually sounded like. It wasn’t until the Renaissance began to dawn, that an increasing amount of dance music was written down. Huge collections were produced during
the second half of the sixteenth century onwards, notably by prolific composers like Michael Praetorius, Tielman Susato and publisher Pierre Phalèse who, in the town of Leuven started a bookselling business which developed into a successful publishing house. By 1575, Phalèse had produced nearly two hundred books of popular dance music, many of which were for the lute, a popular instrument at the time. At first, Phalèse outsourced his books to various printers, but later produced his own music books using the then state-of-theart technology, movable type. During the sixteenth and seventh centuries, dance music of all forms flowed from many composers, including some distinguished ones like Bach, Handel, and the hyper-productive Georg Philipp Telemann who wrote suites of dances, though not for dancing but for courtly entertainment.
Zoltán Kodály (koh-DAHyee) is best known as the creator of the Kodály method of music education. He became interested in music education in 1925 after hearing some school-kids singing in the street. He was horrified by their tuneless squawking and assumed that the music teaching in the schools was to blame. He set about a campaign for better teachers, a better curriculum, and more class-time devoted to music. His tireless work resulted in many publications which eventually influenced music education world-wide. Kodály is most closely associated with something he didn’t actually invent: the hand-signs. These handsigns represent each note of the scale and were invented by the English minister and
music teacher John Curwen in the mid-nineteenth century. Curwen had previously invented the Tonic sol-fa system and the hand-signs were a natural extension of this approach. The handsigns were used in the 1977 movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but they didn’t logically fit the plot and were perhaps included in an attempt to add a bit of gravitas to a rather implausible scene. Kodály wrote his colourful Dances of Galánta in 1933 using folk music of the Galánta region, now part of Slovakia. The work is in five sections and the clarinet is especially prominent because it represents a Hungarian folk instrument known as the tárogató.
Alberto Ginastera (1916-1983): Dance Suite from “Estancia”. Frankfurt Radio Symphony cond. Andrés OrozcoEstrada (Duration: 13:37; Video: 720p)
Alberto Ginastera (jeenah-STEHR-ah) is considered the most powerful voice in Argentine classical music. He studied at the conservatoire in Buenos Aires, and later with the American composer Aaron Copland. Ginastera’s music can be challenging, percussive, thrilling, thought-provoking and sometimes even downright scary. The thunderous last movement of his dramatic First Piano Concerto was brought to fame in 1973 when it was adapted by the rock group Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Ginastera even approved of the arrangement, which relied heavily on keyboards and synthesized percussion. Much of Ginastera’s music is nationalistic and draws on Argentine folk themes or other elements of traditional music. He greatly admired the fine Gaucho traditions and this is reflected in his 1942 one-act ballet Estancia (“The Ranch”). It’s a story about a city boy who falls for a rancher’s daughter but the girl finds him weak and
dull compared to the macho and intrepid Gauchos. Ginastera turned the ballet music into a remarkable four-movement orchestral suite and if you haven’t heard Ginastera’s work before, this is a great place to start. All the hallmarks of his style are there: his love of percussive sounds, his sparkling angular melodies and his exciting use of complex rhythms. You would need a heart of stone to not be moved by the delicious slow movement with its searching melodies (03:19) and the dazzling last movement entitled Malambo (09:19) which is an absolute “must hear”. The malambo is a traditional and somewhat complicated Argentinean folk dance performed only by men and the movement’s closing section is absolutely thrilling, with cataclysmic percussion and brilliantly articulated playing from this fine German orchestra. Recorded at an outdoor concert in Frankfurt a couple of years ago, this is wonderful action-packed music that is impossible to resist.

Jeff Lindsay has entertaining new thriller Bruce DeSilva Riley Wolfe gets his kicks executing spectacular robberies that no one else would even contemplate. His victims are always the super-rich, whom he despises as “smug, do-nothing, self-loving leeches.” This anti-hero makes his debut in “Just Watch Me,” a supremely entertaining new thriller by Jeff Lindsay that promises to be the first of a series. The plot combines the intricacies of caper movies such as “The Thomas Crown Affair” and “To Catch a Thief” with the creepy sensibility of the hit TV show “Dexter.” The latter is no surprise since the show was inspired by Lindsay’s eight novels featuring Dexter Morgan, a serial killer who preyed only upon other serial killers. Unlike Dexter, Wolfe takes no pleasure in
murder, but he displays no qualms about dispassionately dispatching anyone who gets in his way. The opening of the story finds Wolfe taking no satisfaction from his spectacular heist of a 12-ton sculpture, swiped in broad daylight at its dedication ceremony. For him, the spectacular has become ordinary, and it bores him. He craves a caper that is “beyond impossible, something ridiculous, unthinkable.” He finds it when the government in Tehran, hoping to thaw its relations with the United States, lends the Iranian crown jewels to a New York City museum. There, the multi-billion-dollar treasure is guarded by the latest in high-tech security systems and by both American-trained mercenaries and a “trigger-happy” contingent of Iranian Revolutionary Guards.
“Just Watch Me,” Dutton, by Jeff Lindsay.
Meanwhile, Wolfe is being tracked by Frank Delgado, a clever FBI agent who has been after him for years, always a step or two behind. Now, the agent has decided that the only way to catch Wolfe is to uncover his weakness — one that must have its roots in Wolfe’s upbringing. So Delgado crisscrosses the eastern half of the
United States, digging into Wolfe’s long-buried family history. Readers who know how caper stories usually work will have little doubt who is going to win this catand-mouse game, but the agent’s fine detective work succeeds in unearthing the influences that turned Wolfe into the man he has become. “Just Watch Me,” then, is both an exciting crime story and a revealing exploration of the psychology of a master criminal. The writing is tight and vivid, the characters are convincingly portrayed and the action is nonstop. Bruce DeSilva, winner of the Mystery Writers of America’s Edgar Award, is the author of the Mulligan crime novels including “The Dread Line.” Online: http://www.dexter-books.com/ http://www.brucedesilva .com/

Magic Moments at Ben’s Theater TPO String Quartet by Colin Kaye One of my friends is an experienced and successful flute teacher who always encourages her students to look out for “magic moments”. Of course, she’s not referring to the Canadian vodka of the same name, or even the 1950s song by Burt Bacharach but to those fleeting occasions in music which can bring a frisson of excitement or even a tingle down the spine. The expression came to mind at a recent concert given by the TPO String Quartet, socalled because the musicians are members of the
Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra. Led by Omiros Yavroumi, the Concertmaster of the TPO, the quartet has something of an international quality. Omiros himself is Greek, Chanasorn Chantarapaoraya (second violin) is Thai, AibekAshirmatov (viola) hails from Uzbekistan and Sarai Arsa (cello) was born in Japan. The programme opened with Haydn’s String Quartet in C major, Op. 76, No. 3. It dates from the late 1790s and has acquired the nickname “Emperor” because the second movement is based on Haydn’s anthem, God Save Emperor Francis. Once the unofficial anthem
(L-R) Omiros Yavroumis (vln 1); Chanasorn Chantarapaoraya (vln 2); Sarai Arsa (vc) and Aibek Ashirmatov (vla).
of Austria, it is now the national anthem of Germany. The TPO quartet gave a fine account of the work and seemed to capture the essence of the music. I was struck by their attention to detail, the excellent sense of ensemble, the finely-judged dynamics and the careful phrasing. The slow movement has a wonderful closing section with surprising dream-like harmonies and the players really captured
the timeless beauty of the music. It was one of several magic moments of the evening. Their performance of the Minuet had a fine sense of rhythm and the Trio section was beautifully judged. The last movement develops into a bustling musical exchange between the instruments and contains some tricky passages that require a high degree of technical skill. The players navigated the movement
splendidly and confidently. Mendelssohn’s Quartet in A minor, Op. 13, No. 2 was written when he was only eighteen but is not short of musical challenges. It dates from 1828, a few months after the death of Beethoven. The opening phrase even sounds like Beethoven and it’s a quotation from Mendelssohn’s song Ist es wahr? (“Is it true?”) composed a few months earlier. There are references to it throughout the
work. The TPO performed this lyrical opening faultlessly with a fine sense of phrasing and dynamic control. I especially enjoyed their performance of the second movement, the opening of which was beautifully timed with lovely rich tone quality: yet another magic moment. The mysterious melody of the third movement was played splendidly by Omiros Yavroumis to a lilting rhythm of pizzicato strings. The scampering middle section seemed to evoke the exotic world of Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream and was brilliantly performed with a superb lightness of touch and splendid articulation. The powerful last movement work was given a fine performance and the final appearance of the Ist es wahr? theme was especially poignant and heart-felt. A magic moment indeed. The quartet’s expressive playing of Elgar’s Salut d’amour made a fitting and reflective conclusion to a splendid concert.
An evolved iceman? Kristoff steps up in ‘Frozen 2’
Jocelyn Noveck, AP Picture this: A princess is in distress. It looks bad. Her dashing young man rides up in the nick of time and says, “Here I am to save you, my dear!” Actually, he doesn’t. He just says, “I’m here. Whaddya need?” She has a plan, and off they go. This little exchange between Kristoff and Anna may not be the showiest in “Frozen 2,” the long-awaited sequel to that little 2013 Disney movie that won two Oscars, broke box office records and caused countless young girls (and boys) to find their inner belting voice. But if you’re a parent looking for your young girl or boy to learn good relationship behavior, they could do well to watch Kristoff, who has now become probably the most evolved iceman this side of Arendelle or all of Scandinavia or maybe the entire European Union, preor post-Brexit. Not that a man is the answer to Elsa and Anna’s problems. As in the first movie, the sisters are still doing it for themselves. And they’re wearing the pants — literally. Gowns give way to more practical attire, even a royal wetsuit.
But, folks: Kristoff has the best song, too. Sorry, Elsa! You sound great — because you’re Idina Menzel, duh. But “Lost in the Woods,” sung by the effortlessly lovable Jonathan Groff, might just be the true heir to “Let it Go,” at least in terms of its addictiveness. An angsty love ballad, performed in retro glam rock style with intentionally cheesy music video moves, a reindeer chorus and Kristoff’s blond mane blowing in the wind ... what’s not to love? “You’re my only landmark, so I’m lost in the woods,” he sings. Sigh. It’s a highlight of the film. The rest, you ask? Well, it’s got quality, and it’s got quantity (HOW many animators are listed in those closing credits?) It just doesn’t have the exciting, lightning-in-a-bottle feel that the wonderful original had. Perhaps that was too much to ask. Certainly, the main characters, who have aged three years (though we humans have aged twice that — drat!) are in good voice, led by Menzel’s majestic Elsa and Kristen Bell’s spunky Anna. Olaf the snowman (Josh Gad) is back, too, and he’s learned how to read, and he has questions. (And nerve! At one point he channels an “American Idol” judge and pronounces Elsa’s singing “a little pitchy.”) And if it all seems less effortless, more workmanlike
than the first film, with a very complex storyline that will definitely be harder to follow for younger fans, there’s plenty to like, especially the lush visuals. Directors Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck give us an animated ocean that looks incredibly real, a more mature, autumn-hued color palette, and a magical forest surrounded by a wall of mist. There are new creatures, from imposing “earth
giants” to a sweet little salamander. There’s an interesting new character played by Sterling K. Brown, a man from Elsa and Anna’s past. And there are seven new original songs by the estimable songwriting team of Kristen AndersonLopez and Bobby Lopez, including a fitting anthem for each main character. We begin, of course, in Arendelle. In flashback, we see Elsa and Anna as young girls, being put to bed by their mother, Queen Iduna (Evan Rachel Wood). In her soothing lullaby, “All is Found,” there’s a message that will shape the story. Back to present time: It’s autumn, a season we haven’t seen yet in the kingdom. Elsa has gained some control over her magic. All seems well. “Some Things Never Change,” the four main characters sing, in what amounts to a Broadwaystyle opening number.
Except it’s wishful thinking. Elsa suddenly hears a voice calling from afar — a voice only she can hear, making her feel deeply unsettled. She decides she needs to voyage far “Into the Unknown” — that’s the new anthem she belts out — to see who’s calling her, and why. Anna insists on going along — they’re in all this together, she reminds Elsa (she has to do this a number of times” it’s the only conflict they still have). And so, accompanied by Kristoff, his reindeer buddy Sven, and Olaf, they head off toward the enchanted forests, unsure of what they’ll find. Meanwhile, Arendelle is in great danger; Elsa has awoken some powerful spirits. It’s best not to give too much detail about what the band of voyagers will find in that mist-surrounded forest. Suffice it to say that they encounter clues from the past,
about wrongs that must be righted if they, and Arendelle, are to have a future. The voyage has its lighter moments. Olaf gets into his usual jams, and sings about getting older (the song is not, sadly, a substitute for the wonderful “In Summer” of the last film). Kristoff keeps trying to propose to Anna, but saying the wrong thing, and she keeps slipping from his grip. At one point she apologizes, and he replies: “That’s OK. My love is not fragile.” Keep on modeling that enlightened boyfriend stuff, Kristoff. Our love for you is not fragile, either. “Frozen 2,” a Walt Disney Studios release, has been rated PG by the Motion Picture Association of America “for action/peril and some thematic elements.” Running time: 103 minutes. Two and a half stars out of four. MPPA definition of PG: Parental guidance suggested.

The presenter was Micheal J. MacIsaac, a Canadian who grew up in Port au Port, Newfoundland; an isolated town of 250 residents. Micheal asked how many Canadians were present and advised the crowd Canada was taking over, “as they tend to do!” No one looked too worried. Micheal relayed how the isolation of his early years had led him to make the most of the arts that were available from an incredible talent base. There was lots of music, art and talent and he read a lot from the travelling library box. Micheal went on to obtain a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Nova Scotia College of Art and Design and Bachelor of Commerce from Dalhousie University. His work started as an art education teacher and expanded to teach at the uni-
versity level. Then he had a career change to the commercial world of art. As his talents developed, he was often on the move. Canadian friends advised him to come to Pattaya and once he did, he questioned why anyone would go back to 832 cm of snow! Under the heading, “Who am I”, he listed: artist, poet, beatnik, seeker, bohemian, musician, generation walker, music producer, techie, writer, kook, theorist and ponderer. Obviously a very creative person. As an artist, he said he prefers to work in acrylics and showed a photo of a spectacular painting of his. His talents with words can be seen in the songs he has composed, one of which reached number 1 on the charts in 5 countries. One of his poems entered in a competition led to him to being named International Poet of the Year. His passions include documentary film creation and music creation and he has participated in

over 10 series and over 100 published songs and 75 co-writes.

another example of his creativity! Besides the lyrics, he frequently co-wrote the music for his songs. Club members enjoyed his song, Run, Run, Run. Micheal has also made more than 200 videos, including a documentary for the BBC on the life of “the Fifth Beatle”, Sir George Martin. He has codeveloped five musicals: Slob H’ice, I Am Young at Heart, The Big O, Life’s Opera the story of Marvin Gaye, and Age of Awakening. Micheal and Chris Birkett have developed the Foundation “Age of Awakening” (AOA) to develop Art for Social Change. Their objective is to create multimedia projects containing performances of national and international artists who have qualified, through a selection process, to represent the music of their culture to the outside world. All royalties pertaining to the artists performance, audio, video, TV and Film will be collected by the AOA Foundation and used to improve the living
standards in the above mentioned artist’s community; primarily in the area of health and financial stability. This is done by financing the digging of wells, building of schools, improving agriculture, art and music programs through action and sustainability. Micheal’s talk illustrated how it is possible for people to use their talents to entertain, inspire and generally end up making the world a better place. Ren Lexander conducted the after presentation interview of Micheal J. MacIsaac. To view the video, visit: https://www.youtube.com/ watch?v=MyGQBrWGTyo. After the presentation, the MC brought everyone up to date on the upcoming club events and others of interest. This was followed by the Open Forum where questions are asked and answered about Expat living in Thailand, especially Pattaya. What causes strokes and how to recover from one What happens when you have a stroke? How do you rehabilitate from one? These questions were answered by two doctors from Bangkok Hospital Pattaya (BHP) when they spoke to the Pattaya City Expats Club’s Sunday, December 1, meeting. Dr. Natchai Jitthamvanich, MD, and Dr. Tanakorn Suebphanwong, MD, tag teamed their special presentation on the subject of this serious medical emergency and its aftermath. Dr. Tanakorn is a Neurologist specializing in diagnosis and treatment for strokes. Dr. Natchai, is a Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Specialist. Why is knowing about a stroke important? A stroke is a serious medical condition that can result in paralysis or even death depending on its severity and how soon treatment can be started. There are two main types of stroke, one due to lack of blood flow to the brain, and the other due to bleeding in the brain. Both result in parts of the brain not functioning properly. Immediate recognition and treatment is necessary, thus it is important to be able to recognize the signs if someone is having a stroke, especially since so many Expats here are older retirees and, thus, at a
higher risk of having one. Stokes are prevalent as one in four of the world’s population will suffer a stroke in their lifetime and is the second leading cause of death. The US alone had 103 billion dollars in lost revenue as a result of folks having a stroke. Further, a stroke can cause critical life changing limitations. We often hear of heart attacks which result from a blockage in the blood flow to the heart. A stroke can be considered a “brain attack” where a disruption of blood supply and therefore oxygen to the brain takes place. This can result in the loss of brain cells causing paralysis or death. The risks for stroke include a familiar list of bad actors including high blood pressure, smoking, excessive sodium input as well as family or personal history. A stroke can be recognized by various symptoms including imbalance, slurred speech, blurred vision, weakness in limbs and a sagging face. Once these warning signs are perceived, it is imperative to get medical attention as soon as possible. Timely treatment is critical in order to preserve both body and brain function. During a stroke 2 million brain cells die every minute.
MC Les Edmonds (center) presents Dr. Tanakorn (on his right) and Dr. Natchai (on his left) with the PCEC’s Certificate of Appreciation for their enlightening talk about the seriousness of a stroke, its treatment, and rehabilitation.
Since stokes are very preventable, the doctors offered a simple list of 7 stroke prevention activities. These include stop smoking, make an attempt to reduce blood pressure, reduce salt intake, try and lower cholesterol levels and blood sugar, lose weight and initiate physical exercise. In the long run these practices, though life changing in some cases, are better alternatives to a stroke and its aftermath. They emphasized that time is critical in the treatment of a stroke’s effects. If medical attention is obtained within
4 and a half hours, a chemical called altephase can be injected to the stroke site to dissolve a clot/blockage. If within 6 hours, an operation attempt can be made to remove the clot. Time is critical! The sooner treatment can be done, the less damage the stroke can cause. Once you have had a stroke, rehabilitation may start as soon as 24 to 48 hours after the attack and may last six months or longer. The severity of the stroke and the damage that was done to the brain will determine what things may have to be
relearned by the patient. The take away from the talk was delineated clearly in three simple terms: Reduce (the risk factors for stroke), Recognize (the signs of a stroke) and Respond (get medical help quickly). Dr. Tanakorn received his Doctor of Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine at Srinakarinwirot University, Thailand. He did his Internship at Bungkhan Hospital in Bungkhan, Thailand and Residency training in Neurological programs at Siriraj hospital in Bangkok. At BHP, he is a Consultant for
the Clinical Care Program Certification of Primary Stroke Center as well as an expert clinical advisor of the Comprehensive Stroke Care Clinic project. He is a member of the Neurological Society of Thailand and of the International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society. Dr. Natchai received his Doctor of Medicine from the Faculty of Medicine and Diplomate from the Thai Board of Rehabilitation Medicine at Chulalongkorn Hospital. From August to October 2004, he gained experience in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Ladprao General Hospital, Bangkok, and from 1999 to 2001 he was a General Practice doctor at Thachana Hospital, Surat Thani. He has been at BHP’s Rehabilitation Center since December 2004. After the doctors answered many questions from the audience, the MC brought everyone up to date on the upcoming club events and others of interest. This was followed by the Open Forum where questions are asked and answered about Expat living in Thailand, especially Pattaya. Hamilton to Ferrari? Jerome Pugmire
Nissan invests in production to prepare for electric age Yuri Kageyama Yokohama, Japan (AP) — Nissan is investing 33 billion yen ($303 million) in its flagship auto plant in Japan’s Tochigi prefecture in a first rollout of a production system geared toward electric vehicles. Nissan Motor Co. Executive Vice President Hideyuki Sakamoto said Thursday that manufacturing methods must change because vehicles increasingly have both hybrid and electric engines and new parts for connectivity and artificial intelligence services. Sakamoto said the production changes, set to be completed next year, use robotics and sensors to decrease physical stress on assembly-line workers. They are tailored for a workforce increasingly manned by senior workers and women. Among the innovations for Nissan’s so-called “intelligent factory” is a powertrain mounting system that allows at least 27 configurations to be installed in one procedure. The parts, including the battery for electric vehicles, are put together on one “pallet,” or foundation unit, for easier installing into the vehicle. Another innovation involves programming a worker ’s craftsmanship into robotics. The moves are so finely tuned in the automated sealing process that the delicate

angles and touches of a human worker are duplicated. The advantage to such a system is that a robot’s work is consistent and tireless, maintaining the quality of craftsmanship, according to Nissan. “The competitiveness of an automaker lies in production, as well as design and technology development,” Sakamoto told reporters. Auto production methods have remained basically the same since the early 1900s. But vehicles are becoming more complex, as driversupport technology, hybrid systems and various kinds of batteries must be fitted in, depending on the vehicle, Sakamoto said. The production methods will be later rolled out in Nissan’s plants in Japan and elsewhere around the world but details are undecided. Yokohama-based Nissan, which makes the Leaf electric car, March subcompact and Infiniti luxury models,
is eager to relay a message of innovation as it battles a serious risk to its reputation amid plunging profits and sales. Nissan’s former Chairman Carlos Ghosn is awaiting trial on various financial misconduct allegations. Nissan has acknowledged failings in its corporate governance. Its new chief executive is taking office next week. Ghosn’s successor Hiroto Saikawa also stepped down, acknowledging financial misconduct. All other major global automakers are working on smart, connected and electric vehicles. But Nissan has a head start in many of the innovations, especially electric vehicles, thanks largely to Ghosn. Ghosn says he is innocent and accuses others in Nissan of colluding to get rid of him to block a fuller integration with its alliance partner Renault SA of France.
Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Six-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton appeared to open the door for a possible future move to Ferrari when he refused to deny meeting with its chairman John Elkann. Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport reported Saturday that the Mercedes driver has met Elkann twice this year, and that they discussed Hamilton potentially replacing Sebastian Vettel at Ferrari from 2021 onward. Both four-time champion Vettel and Hamilton have yet to renew contracts expiring at the end of 2020. Hamilton was asked after winning Sunday’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix — the 11th win of another dominant season and 84th overall — if he did meet Elkann. “Naturally, everything that happens behind closed doors is always private with whoever it is you end up sitting with,” Hamilton said. “For many years, I’ve never ever sat down and considered other options, because we (Mercedes) have been driving straight ahead, on the same path. We’re still on that path, and there’s very little that’s going to shift it.” Hamilton started to add “But there’s no harm in ...” before saying “I know (Mercedes team principal) Toto (Wolff) is also looking at his options, in terms of his future, and only he will know what is best for him.” Hamilton’s stint at Mercedes has brought the Silver Arrows unprecedented success. Under the stewardship of Wolff, he has won five world titles to add to his first with former team McLaren in 2008. But Wolff’s future is also undecided, amid reports he could possibly move into another role within Formula One. “I love where I am, so it’s definitely not a quick decision to go and do something

else,” Hamilton said. “But it’s only smart and wise for me to think about what I want, if it is the last stage of my career.” Ferrari’s team principal Mattia Binotto called Hamilton “an outstanding driver” on Friday and tantalizingly added “knowing that he’s available in 2021 can make us only happy.” “I think it’s the first compliment I’ve had from Ferrari in 13 years ... Thank you. I’ll take it,” Hamilton said Saturday after clinching a recordextending 88th pole position. “It’s taken all these years for them to recognize me. I’m grateful ... It’s positive. I think it’s never a waste of time to ever be nice to someone.” The 34-year-old British driver added: “(Ferrari is) a team I’ve always appreciated. To earn the respect from them is obviously very high up.” Wolff was asked after Sunday’s race how he rates Hamilton’s chances of staying. “I would rate it at 75 percent,” he said. “There is a 25 percent chance that we are not in control of. So we’ll see how the next months pan out.” Wolff has not yet begun talks with Hamilton over a new contract, although previous negotiations were also kept fairly low-key and casual. “We haven’t given ourselves a date,” Wolff said. “Come back at the end of January, February, define a schedule on when we want to discuss it.”
Wolff experienced uncertainty before when Nico Rosberg stunned Mercedes by retiring from F1 after beating Hamilton to the 2016 title. “When Nico decided to quit, my initial reaction was actually the opportunity provided to us, and I think the choice with Valtteri (Bottas) proved to be the right choice,” Wolff said. “So I still very much hope that our relationship continues. But I’m not entirely in control of that. If one important member breaks out, that certainly provides risk and opportunity at the same time.” Hamilton reportedly earns more than $50 million a year at Mercedes. But Ferrari might be prepared to beat that, especially since the Italian manufacturer has not won the drivers’ title since Kimi Raikkonen in 2007 and the constructors’ title in 2006. Wolff said he and Hamilton have “talked very openly” about Ferrari’s grand stature within F1, and he understands the temptation for Hamilton to end his outstanding career in the famed red of Ferrari. “There will be components such as financial incentives that will play a role ... I still think a driver of that level will always know that he can make an impact on a team,” Wolff said. “When he left McLaren to Mercedes, it was said that it wasn’t the right move, and it proved to be right (move). So I don’t think I want to make a mistake of underestimating Ferrari’s potential.”
Have the American owners made for a better spectacle?
Bring back the grid girls.
With Americans now owning the once noble sport of F1, we expected some changes to spice up the Grands Prix. One failure was the MC introducing the drivers a la boxing at Madison Square Garden, for example “Looowisss Hamilto-o-o-on”. But that is just the start. Liberty Media (AKA the owners) will be introducing more sizzle, but without the sausages because they can cost money. The grid girls were scrapped and we didn’t even get a bunch of the cheerleaders in exchange, with the short skirts and pom-poms as eye candy, all to provide a better “show” for the spectators. Instead we had grid kids which hasn’t worked, so let’s try something else. We have to
face the fact that F1 is no longer a sporting competition, it is a “show”, complete with purple pom-poms (or green ones for British drivers and silver for Germans). And have you noticed, the grid girls are reappearing because the circuits want them? As the spectator numbers for F1 have fallen, the bikes are taking over. MotoGP is on the ascendancy. And it is easy to see why. There are 20 riders putting their life on the line in a harsh environment. People know them by name and number, Valentino Rossi number 46, Marc Marquez number 93. They are within the distance for gloves to be thrown, and become treasured keep-sakes for young boys, the next wave of dedicated spectators.
What does F1 do? Makes the drivers untouchable, imagining that they are thought of as gods. Sorry, but they have clay feet. The spectators will go to MotoGP. Sorry, not “will go” – they are already going. Back in the days when JC played for Bethlehem United, I signed my first motor racing contract. In that document was the proviso that after each race, I was to wait with the car in the pits for 30 minutes to answer questions and sign autographs. OK, so it wasn’t F1, but it was motor racing such as that when 40,000 people set off to watch cars competing at Oran Park they were told on the radio to turn round as the traffic tail back was just too long. Motor racing
was very popular – way back then. Can those days be recreated? I believe it would be possible, but it won’t happen. The step backward is just too great. Television and advertising rule the roost. The FIA has let all this happen (don’t blame Bernie), far too preoccupied with stewards penalties and grid spots if you change your engine, and avoiding the real problems. Red Bull’s Verstappen and Ferrari’s Leclerc are very ‘marketable’ items but the environment they race in is too restrictive to hold the attention of the spectators. We need some more gladiators, and maybe a pride of lions? Or just bring back the grid girls.

The past few months have seen outstanding performances for the tournament Player of the Day, but not so much today as the minor place getters in A Flight were in the mix with several prizes collected. Frank Grainger best of the week with 39pts Monday 2nd December Mountain Shadow Stableford Our first visit here for some time due to the renovation of the course and we have two groups out with the cut at 8-15 and 16+. Some very slick greens and wicked pin placings. 31 points is the best score of the day with Dave Howden winning division 2, John Carlin is second on 29, Frank Grainger third on 28. In fourth place, Louis Wong and Paul Young lose out on a 14/12/9 countback to Darryl Burkett after they all score 26 points. There are two rollovers in the twos in division 1 and Dennis Scougall and Pete Sumner both birdie the 5th. In division 2 one rollover to Parichat on Wednesday. Near pins: Dave Boran, Marc Brunner and Dennis Scougall in division 1 and in division 2 only Dave Howden.
Wednesday 4th December Parichat The bronze position went to Johan Steinback Stableford Jan Thowsen with his 38 points was good enough to get the top score on the day.
(27), again on countback, over Werner Huber after they signed for 37 points. The Ladies clear winner on 34 points was Nang Dumas (24) to go with her Long Drive on #18. Honorable mentions have already gone out to Steve and Rich, while Stuart Day got the maximum 2 technical prizes on #s 7 and 8. Mark and the Hemingway’s team kept the masses full with the quantity and quality of the food offered. The chili con carne was well received, and offered some spiciness for those that enjoy the heat. Last New Nordic PAGS tournament of 2019 will be played on 18 December at Pleasant Valley.
4th Place - Richard Fearby (0) - 36 pts 5th Place - Livio Marrone (7) - 34 pts B Flight (17+) 1st Place – John Coetzee (23) - 38 pts 2nd Place – Nigel Harrison (22) - 36 pts c/back 3rd Place – Niall Caven (24) - 36 pts c/back 4th Place - Tony Browne (17) – 36 pts c/back 5th Place - Bill Stewart (21) - 36 pts. Stuart Kidd had the best
An identical cut as of Monday in the two divisions and some slightly higher scores in, which was surprising due to the horrendous strong wind blowing throughout the round. Frank Grainger wins division 2 with 39, John Carlin second on 35 and Paul Young third with 33. Andres Holder with 33 wins division 1, Dennis Scougall second on 30 and Dave Edwards comes in third with 29 points.
(L to R) Frank Grainger, John Carlin and Dave Edwards.
Near pins: Div. 1 Bob Comartin, Dave Edwards (2) and Pete Sumner. Div. 2 Alan Bissell (2), Gil Phillips and Louis Wong. Three twos in division 1: Bob Comartin on the 6th and Dave Edwards on 11th and 14th and in division 2 John Carlin birdied the second.
Friday 6th December Eastern Star Stableford There were eight groups out on Friday so three divisions come in to play with the equal cut at 7 - 16.1, 16.2 - 22 and 23+. Another strong wind coming off the coast. The greens are even slicker than last week and this is reflected in the scores. 34 points is the best score of the day with Steve Godfrey winning division 1, Per Forsberg beat Nik Evans
on an 18/14 countback after two 33s come in and Ron Lavett is fourth with 30. In division 2 Frank Kelly with a 19/17 countback beat John Carlin after they both score 34. Tony Thorne finishes third on 32 and Colin Aspinall beat Glen Loydall to take fourth place with a 17/16 countback after two scores of 28 came in. Eugine Maguire was the winner in division 3 with 32 points. Dave Howden came in second one point behind, with Max Wilson third on 29 and John Dawson fourth on 27. Near pins: Div. 1 Nik Evans, Per Forsberg, Andres Holder and Ron Lavett. Div. 2 Colin Aspinall, John Dawson and Curtis Hessler. No two’s in either division so a rollover in division 1 and a double in division 2 to next Friday.

Ivor Smith wins with 40 after countback PSC Golf from Billabong Monday, Dec. 2 Phoenix Lake and Ocean Stableford Another beautiful day for golf with a couple of people not being able to make it due to various reasons, but we did have 4 groups playing and were away a little early and around in under 4 hours. With a packed course, there were golfers everywhere on all 3 nines. We did have a laugh or two as the Capt was given an ear full for putting out a four ball of walkers in the first group.
He was told we are in carts so it was just mentioned try to keep up with them, won’t you? It didn’t happen as there was a spare hole between them and the second group. There was a contingent of French players, all 7 of them if fact. Some were regulars at the Billabong the rest were friends which were welcomed by the usual team. The course was in great condition with some of the greens so fast it was scary. There were two count backs, the first one between Francis Goyons and Phillipe Chalnot both scoring 37 points with

Francis missing out to the better back nine of Phillipe. Taking third spot was George Barrie with a fine 39 points. Another count back was needed for 1st and 2nd between Jean Pierre Gasser and Ivor Smith (who needed the Leyland brothers to help find his ball on Ocean 5), both scoring 40 points. Ivor took the top spot and Jean Pierre second. There were 4 twos coming from Gerard Lambert, Glyn Davies, Jean Gasser and Steve Dodd, his ball nearly landing in the hole.

clothing for this is the cold season and they are cold. For those born outside of Thailand, it was near perfect golf weather but the wind caused problems all around with only 5 golfers playing to their handicaps in the 7 groups that started.
Miss Noodle (12), who is having a consistently good run of form, took top spot with 36 points. Miss Sa (16) was level par for the first 5 holes which gave her 19 points on the front nine but a blob on the way home relegated her to 2nd place one
point better than Miss Porn (19) both on 35 points on a countback. Unusually, the men fared better than the ladies with Keith Allen (11) with 6 pars and 1 birdie in his 36 points losing 3rd place to William Macey (21) by 1 point. Gareth Gill (9) now with a single figure handicap might have expected an even better score than his 39 points with 22 points and 38 gross on the front, but 17 points after the turn secured 2nd place from the star of the day, Wayne Cotterell (13). Three putting twice during his round, fleetingly disappointed himself, but the broad grin at the end summed up his feelings with 42 points and top spot. Four 2s today going to Gareth Gill, Peter Le Noury, Auke Engelkes and Arch Armstrong who was convinced that there was cling film on the holes with eleven 1 pointers on his round.

Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik proudly displays his first Thailand Super Series GT3 Category Trophy.
28 Nov 2019 - The 2019 Champions of the Thailand Super Series were awarded their well-deserved prizes at The Night of Champions Event hosted at Impact Speed Park, Impact Muangthongthani. Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik collected his first Thailand Super Series GT3 Category Trophy after finishing 4 rounds with 2 wins, 3 pole positions, 4 podiums, the winner of the world class street circuit of Thailand, Bangsasen Street Circuit, and the overall Champion of the year in Super Car GT3 which celebrates one of its most successful seasons to date.
Sandy said, “I am honoured to pick up this trophy for the first time. What an incredible year it has been, thank you to B-Quik Racing team and all my incredible sponsors in giving me this opportunity. We will work hard to come back even stronger next year, with a hunger to win like it’s our first one!” Sandy Kraokaew Stuvik is honored to be supported by The Pizza Company, Thai Airways, Puma Thailand, Thaiwings Travel Agency, Dacon Trading, the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Sports Authority of Thailand, and the Royal Automobile Association of Thailand.
1st Keith Norman (12) 34 points 2nd Peter Kelly (13) 34 points 3rs Les Cobban (8) 33 points Near pins Robby Watts, Mike Lloyd, Geoff Parker X 2. With a big exodus of players over the weekend and a number of locals avoiding this notoriously difficult course our number was reduced to a round dozen. Surprisingly this well-patronised course was virtually empty. At times it seemed we were the only ones on the course. Could be because of the difficulty of the layout, and the fact that the green fees have been edging up over the high season. Playing conditions were pleasant with mild weather and only a very slight breeze blowing. Speed of play was leisurely with nobody in front or behind us. As always seems to be the case, renovations and improvements to the course were being undertaken, but didn’t affect play. Looks like Keith Norman likes glassware. Having secured the golfer of the month trophy last month he set out in his quest to add another, taking first place with a score of thirty-four points edging out Peter Kelly on countback. Les Cobban looks like returning to form again after a recent slump to take third place a point back.
Having not seen the bar owners since before we moved in earlier this year, we were pleased to welcome back the Wood brothers for at least a three-month stay, we may even entice them out onto the golf course one day.
Wednesday, December 4th Mountain Shadow Stableford 1st Jimmy Carr (17) 36 points 2nd Ken Davidson (25) 32 points 3rd Les Cobban (8) 30 points 4th Keith Norman (12) 29 points Near pins Keith Norman, Jimmy Carr, & Tony Robbins We made a return visit to Mountain Shadow on Wednesday as the course was in ok condition for our last visit and green fees are considered reasonable by local standards. With adverse exchange rates for just about all foreign currencies, high season green fees have become a major consideration for most resident golfers, more so than seasonal visitors. Unfortunately, the course deteriorated markedly in the last two weeks. It was extremely dry with many white to brown areas of dead grass. If good soaking rain doesn’t come soon the course will become virtually unplayable. Jimmy Carr took first place with a solid round of thirtysix which included a very close near pin. Ken Davidson was cruising on the front

with nineteen only to fade away on the back nine ending up in second place with thirty-two. Les Cobban was third on thirty points and a weird round by the in-form Keith Norman saw him take fourth with twenty-nine, a round that included two birdies. After, it was party time at Woody’s Bar to celebrate Steve Wood’s birthday, again a big smorgasbord of delicious Thai food prepared by the boss lady.
Friday, December 6th Pattavia - Stableford 1st Ken Davidson (25) 42 points 2nd Daryl Vernon (19) 37 points 3rd Keith Norman (12) 35 points Near pins Ken Davidson, & Tony Scambler X 2 Just nine days since our last visit to Pattavia for the first round of the club
championship and not surprisingly not much changed. The course was still in great shape and the green fees reasonable. Amazing how so many courses don’t seem to understand that keeping the course in good order and reasonably priced green fees bring in the punters every time. With some cooler weather in our area in recent days and no wind, conditions for golf were close to perfect, so no place for excuses. Ken Davidson was a week too late in hitting top form for the club championships. On Friday he hit peak performance with a magnificent score of forty-two points. One can feel a significant cut in handicap coming his way. Daryl Vernon also performed to a high level, not quite as high as last week when he led the club championship by three strokes after the first day, but nevertheless enough to take second place with thirty-seven points, obviously this course suits his game. Keith Norman also had a good day with a respectable thirty-five points to take third. Despite his best efforts to imitate Joseph Merrick, Tony Scambler took away two near pins, so he can still perform when he wants to, a bit like John Hughes. The remaining pin went to Ken Davidson.

PSC Golf from Cafe Kronborg Monday 2nd December Silky Oak Stableford The golfers from Kronborg headed to Silky Oak on the first Monday of December. Playing from the front tees and using all available drop zones the scores were pretty decent. A welcome went out to Peter Hammond who had just arrived from the UK, and farewell to Deryl Neufeld heading back to work in the Middle East. Deryl tends to be in town for about a month, between his work commitments, so is just hitting form when he has to leave. He has been on a hot streak in the last week or so and today was no different. Deryl won a closely fought contest pipping three players by one point. On his departure he made a donation to the Cafe Kronborg golfers Christmas bash. Thanks Deryl! 1st Deryl Neufeld (15) 38 pts 2nd Rob Brown (7) 37 pts (21 B/9) 3rd Jan Lovgreen (26) 37 pts (19 B/9) 4th Kenneth Madsen (14) 37 pts (15 B/9) 5th Karl Beter (35) 35 pts

Wednesday 4th December Crystal Bay Stableford The test on Wednesday was Crystal Bay, or was it? We headed up the seven amidst rumours that they had lost our booking. On arrival the check in was quiet and they could easily accommodate our four groups. We teed off in a strong breeze, which kept the temperature down. The breeze continued all day and made some holes seem very short and some very long. The putting appeared difficult for the group I was in, but Svend Gaarde had no
problem on the greens. Svend won the B flight, and two long putts. Svend squeezed out Peter Hammond on a tight countback, going down to the last three holes. The score of the day came from the A flight with Henning Olsen shooting an impressive 40 points. Took some time coming but it has arrived, “Alex Field takes his first Monthly Mug.” Well done mate you deserved it. Had a nice number of eighteen golfers that signed up to play Thursday for “The November Monthly Mug” being played at Pleasant Valley G.C. Amazingly Sports Day pricing for this course was B1550 all in, a good price for this time of year. The course was in top nick as you expect from this mob, everything was good with the weather being a bit on the warm side but not too uncomfortable. We attacked the course from the white tees. Eighteen golfers allowed us to play the one flight only with four placings and as usual all novelties up for grabs. Alex Field took the day by the scruff of the neck and won his very first Monthly Mug, a deserved winner and it was a long time coming. Net 67 set him three shots in

front of the rest. JJ Harney climbed the podium in second spot, his first podium finish for a while. Mashi Kaneta finished third, with Gary Williams fourth across the line. 1st Alex Field (17) 67 net. 2nd JJ Harney (18) 70 net. 3rd Mashi Kaneta (17) 71 net. 4th Gary Williams (29) 72 net. Near pins: 5Alex Field, 8 Steve Younger, 13 Steve Younger, and 17 Keith Buchanan. Long first putt: 9 Patrick Poussier and 18 Roger Ellis. Back at Bogey’s we welcomed back Colm Lawlor,
Roger Ellis, Glen Martin & James Martin. But then sadly had to bid farewell to Bob Butler who had joined us for two games. Mate you made an impression and will be sadly missed, only problem is that my clubs have to put up with me once again. I just hope that you taught them how to play. 5555. D-For was set free by Alex and the punters and players at Bogeys Bar and Grill were generous as always with their contributions towards the needy in Pattaya. All are thanked for this.

RST Vipers’ defeat by AAS and RST Cobras’ win over PCC creates a draw for the tournament title Pattaya Indoor Cricket League (PICL) – Round 11 From page 32 Thereafter PCC were kept under raps by tight bowling (10 dot balls) from Charlie and John Holland, but PCC preserved their wickets. Jainish Parikh and Dexter West added 16 whilst Trevor Moolman and Dexter (doubling as the 8th man) added 21 for the last 3 overs. 14 runs, including a six by Dexter, came off the last over from an unusually less than effective Chris Lindop. A defendable score of 107 reduced to 87 for 4. RST Cobras’ usual openers of Pete Reeh and Guthrie Miller were reasonably well contained and managed a respectable 19 runs for no loss, but Mr Extras added 16. A good start with 35 for 0. Will Howell and John Holland were also kept in check via several dot balls from Matt Harkness and Wez Masterton but they added 18 with Will being run out by an accurate throw from Jainish Parikh. Halfway was 52 for 1 and 8 runs ahead. Will Stoker, a debutant, and Charlie Rowe took the crease. Bernie’s usual bowling accuracy deserted him and he threw a bunch of wides and then Jainish pinned Will at the striker’s end. Matt Harkness completed their third over by bowling Will and restricting

them to a net gain of 8, but Mr Extras added 13. PCC needed to keep it tight if they were going to pull off a win, never easy against Lewis Madd and Chris Lindop. Trevor Moolman’s over yielded 9 runs whilst Bernie’s yielded 12 (7 of them wides). Cobras were 7 runs ahead when Matt bowled the final over. 4 dot balls and an appeal for LBW – not given as it was just a tad too high. Then Chris was caught off the last ball to bring the score to 104 reduced to 89 for 4 and RST Cobras won by 2 runs. Best bowler was Matt Harkness with 2 overs 14 for 2. Best batsman was Bernie Lamprecht with 15 for 0 and
MotM was Matt Harkness. In the last game of this tournament, RST Vipers played the AAS. This was yet another T20 or Big Bash match with runs and wickets galore. AAS opened the match with Dimple and Jatin who made an excellent start. Dimple hogged the strikers end and bashed 27 including two sixes in retaliation for being bowled second ball by Stuart Douglas. Happy, not wishing to be outshone by Dimple, smashed 36 (highest score of the tournament) from 17 of the 18 balls. Harsh, feeling a little left out, wanted the strike so he refused to run and Happy was run out. Having got the strike, he
Dinosaur Night Run draws 3,500
promptly ran himself out. Doh - Happy took control of the strikers end again, but they had added 47 with extras and the score stood at a formidable 76 for 3 at halfway. The brakes were applied by Tim Jones in a devastating over where he bowled Ravi
first ball, 2 dots and then bowled Aswin. Ravi was then run out and Ashwin was LBW last ball. Some semblance of order was restored in the remaining 2 overs as Aswin and Ravi added 20 for no further loss. The final pair of Bharat and Rajish added a solid 32 for the loss of Rajish caught by Matt Mann off Steve Dunn. Bharat hit the last ball for 6 and brought the score to 157 reduced to 117 for 8. RST Vipers had their work cut out and started slowly whilst still losing wickets. Matt Mann and Stuart Douglas both lost wickets to Rajish via a catch from Bharat and a run out via Dimple whilst adding 21. Previn and Burger Yesnoyeswait Marx arrived where Burger immediately reverted to type and Previn was run out. Burger is now known as Yesnoyeswaityessorryoops. Burger maintained most of the strike and scored 21 but
Previn fell to a catch by Ravi off Dimple. Halfway was 42 for 4 and 34 runs adrift. Something needed to be done. Marcus Large and Carl Pohl did quite well by adding 24 for Carl being caught by Dimple and the 11 extras were really helpful. The final pair of Steve Dunn and Tim Jones lit the touch paper but they were still 45 behind. Bharat’s over yielded 12 runs and Ashwin’s 18 runs but Steve Dunn was expertly stumped by Bharat chasing a wide ball. RST were 20 runs behind in the last over. Was it possible? They scored 19 but Steve was run out and so they ended their innings with 146 reduced to 111 for 7 and a loss by 6 runs. Best batsman was Happy, best bowler was Tim Jones and MotM was Bharat. The next tournament starts 11 Jan 2020. If you wish to know more about PCC visit www. pattayacricketclub.com

Elegance meets style at Seven Seas Le Carnival
Seven Seas Le Carnival fuses elegance with style, luxury and affordability, features 2 high rise and 2 low rise condominiums.
Universal Group Thailand claims that their newest condominium project “Seven Seas Le Carnival” fuses elegance with style, and one walk through their showroom proves that they were right. Although this project was recently launched, the large number of bookings and enquiries the company has received suggests that Le Carnival is already a customer favorite. The project, led by sales manager Ekaterina Chirkova and marketing coordinator Juranee Saothon, is built on a 12 rai (16,500 sq. meters) plot about 800 meters off Jomtien Beach but within striking distance of Sukhumvit
Road and the Highway 7 onramp, making trips to Suvarnabhumi International and U-Tapao-Rayong-Pattaya airports quick and easy.
Ekaterina states that Le Carnival is the only condominium project in Pattaya that combines resort style amenities with high rise
Le Carnival’s spacious and luxurious lobby.
architecture. The project features two high rise and two low rise buildings with a total of 1,500 units and a variety of room configurations including penthouses on the 26th and 27th floors, twobedroom condos of 62 sq. meters and 56 sq. meters, one-bedroom 35-37 sq. meters and studios from 24-26 sq. meters. Le Carnival provides its residents with iconic lifestyle offerings all year round. Imagine spending your mornings floating around in one of Le Carnival’s many swimming pools. You could relax in the tranquil lagoons or drift around in the lazy river. Next up is lunch at any of the several luxury restaurants located on the property, followed by some leisure reading in the library or amusement in the games room. End your day with a ride up the private elevator straight to the Sky Club on the 28th floor and enjoy drinks with a 360-degree panoramic view of the city. These are just some of the discoveries that will capture your heart at Le Carnival - A magical place where living feels like a never-ending holiday. Project construction is now 50 percent complete and the whole project is scheduled to be open in 2021.

The good news is that Seven Seas Le Carnival is offering an end of the year promotion, with units starting at just 1.9 million baht. The group is also hosting a Red-Carpet extravaganza on the 14th of December to celebrate the success of
their second project “Seven Seas Cote D’Azur”, with a special appearance by celebrity Pancake Khemanit and mini-concert by the talented Yingyong Yotbua. For more information, call 083-888-7239 or 080560-4545, or visit SevenSeasLeCarnival.com.

Piet’s Stop definite German ambience, heightened by the fact that Piet (pronounced as “Pete”) is a large German ex-pat, and his restaurant’s clientele is predominantly German speaking, but you’ll get by with English or Thai. You will also have noticed that tri-lingual Piet is in a wheelchair. In the far corner of the open-sided restaurant is a large BBQ rotisserie with
also employs many members of his Thai family. The remaining space in the restaurant is taken up with utilitarian tables and chairs. This is a beer sort of restaurant and beers are B. 65-99. The menu is more comprehensive than you would imagine, with some late breakfasts B. 95-135. Appetizers are B. 60-135 and include a baked sheep’s
If you want to try Piet’s roast chicken you must ring up 24 hours in advance.
I have dined at some very exclusive restaurants, both here and overseas. I’m sure you have too. Places where the menu has no prices printed on it. If you have to ask, you
shouldn’t be there. This week it wasn’t like that at all. Piet’s Stop has no salmon from a private estuary, no liveried executive chef, no fawning service staff, but a ‘real’ restaurant. Piet’s Stop is on Thepprasit Soi 17 used as a short cut running from Thepprasit Road on down to the Rom Pho Market on Jomtien Second Road. There, on the right hand side going down 17 you will find Piet’s Stop, but slow or you could miss it! Somewhat rustic, it has a Piet trains the cooks himself.
Hamburgers are interesting (and originally they did come from Hamburg) B. 155-265 with his ‘double’ hamburger featuring a 2.4 kg patty plus bacon, onion, cheese, tomato and cucumber. At the weekends, Piet has live music and a B. 250 buffet. The Dining Out team was a group of five and rather than five orders, Piet suggested he present a sample of various dishes, which was an excellent idea, when we saw the size of individual portions. The samples came on baking trays and included the roast chicken (we had
telephoned the day before), and an excellent schnitzel and currywurst (which was superb). Despite the fairly rustic ambience, Piet serves good German food, in good German proportions, with much good humor. This is a place to go with a few friends and sit back and enjoy yourself. The B. 250 weekend buffet sounds great for family dinners. Piet’s Stop, Thepprasit Soi 17, telephone 092 707 3651, hours from 11.30 a.m. until 8.30 p.m., email piet2203@ yahoo.de, open 6 days (closed Mondays). On-street parking.

Piet gets a lot of help and love from his Thai family.

Scrambled Eggs with a bit more One of the most popular breakfast items is surely scrambled eggs. Unfortunately, there are many breakfast cooks who simply whisk the eggs, drop in the frying pad, toss a couple of times and serve. Such a shame, as the morning scrambled egg does not need much embellishment to make it into an interesting, as well as wholesome, dish.

Cooking Method In a mixing bowl, beat eggs, milk, salt, and ground black pepper together until well blended. Melt butter in frying pan over medium-low heat until hot (or if being very health-conscious, use polyunsaturated margarine); pour in egg mixture. Reduce heat. As mixture begins to set on bottom and sides of skillet, lift and fold over with spatula. Cook until eggs are almost set; fold in tomato and shallots. Heat scrambled eggs through; serve immediately. RST Vipers’ defeat by AAS and RST Cobras’ win over PCC creates a draw for the tournament title Pattaya Indoor Cricket League (PICL) – Round 11 The final round of the tournament was played on 2nd Dec at Rugby
School Thailand (RST), Banglamung, between RST Cobras versus Pattaya
Cricket Club (PCC) and RST Vipers versus Asian All Stars (AAS). RST Vipers’ defeat by AAS by 6 runs and RST Cobras’ win over PCC by 2 runs creates a draw for 1st place in the tournament, PCC and AAS were third equal. PCC’s match was the same old story - having scored more runs off the bat, 93 versus Cobras’ 62, they gave away 42 extras and victory to RST Cobras by 2 runs. Wez Masterton and Matt Harkness scored freely for 33 although Lady Luck gifted them three missed catches from Will Stoker at cover. Charlie Rowe got his revenge by having both batsmen caught, with Will Stoker managing to hold on to one. A mediocre 44 for 4 at halfway. Continued on page 26
