MAKHA BUCHA 2017
By Kevin Cain
F
or many foreigners who decide to make Thailand their home it takes a pretty long time to adjust to the widely different cultures of southeast Asia. Going to a Thai Island on holiday is completely different from settling down to a new job in one of the country’s towns or cities. It is not until you have to face doing the mundane acts of life and dealing with Thailand’s notorious bureaucracy that you start to understand the measure of difficulty that faces you.
A part of the acclimatisation process is an understanding of the Buddhist faith and what it means to the Thai people. This faith and their reverence for the monarchy is at the core of Thai thinking and fundamental to beliefs and actions. Makha Bucha is the first of four highly important Buddhist holidays celebrated throughout the year. If you consider how many religious holidays there are in Thailand then you must understand that this is highly significant. The religious significance of Makha Bucha observing Buddha’s teaching of Ovada Patimokkha. The name changes slightly from one Buddhist country to another, but all celebrate the same teaching. One of the main ways these religious festivals are observed is by going to the temple and making merit. Commonly it is also a time for abstaining from something and also doing good deeds. As a foreigner or Farang, the very least you should do on these auspicious occasions is to show proper respect. Bear in mind that commonly there is a ban on the sale of alcohol on religious days, this is not to say you cannot drink in your own home. When I first came over to live in Thailand I thought this was a big game and enjoyed trawling through town to find a discreet bar to serve me a beer. Nowadays I realise that this was pure selfishness and questioned my capacity to refrain from alcohol for one day. Was I not in control of my own sobriety? Other customs for religious days can also be slightly baffling but you must consider the magnitude of the day. I now also understand the importance of adhering to theses customs is a way of understanding and getting to know a fraction more of this alien culture. By following the code laid down you are immersing yourself in tradition, and becoming part of a society. It is a way of earning respect and by slowly learning to accept these important occasions it will give you the bricks to start building the foundation of your acceptance. Deciding to live in a foreign country is a monumental step, and to do this in a completely alien culture is immense. To make a success of the transition the first step is integration, otherwise you will always be an outsider. Occasions such a Makha Bucha give you the chance to learn, observe and to participate. Don’t be an outsider all your life and complain you cannot see the reason for an alcohol ban on Makha Bucha Day, join in and start your first day of really living in Thailand.

What Is A Traditional Thai Massage?
T
he history of Thai massage can be traced back to around two and a half thousand years ago and draws many influences from India’s ancient Ayurvedic traditions of medical practice and its practice in both the Hindu and Buddhist religions. Thai massage focuses on circulation and pressure points, promoting internal health and general flexibility of the muscles. Often the treatment starts with the feet and progresses to the head with the body positioned in four poses, facedown, face-up, side and sitting which exposes the body to all of the muscles and joints to the masseur. The masseur uses elbows, feet, knees and forearms to execute certain manipulations. Deep stretching is also a key element to this sort of massage and rhythmic compressions, rolling of limbs and gentle rocking is used to realign the energies in the body. Different amounts of pressure are given to the energy lines along the body in accordance with the Ayurvedic principles in order to balance the individual’s energy.
Thailand is world famous for Traditional Thai Massage, from the humble beach massage to elegant 5* spas offering every service imaginable. Compared to western countries, the cost of a Thai massage here is really affordable and something that most Thais will experience at least once a week. Thai people may also begin learning the art of massage when as young as 3 years old and there are courses available for both professionals and novices appropriate for any age group. In fact many Thais believe balance or equilibrium is crucial in order to maintain good health. “Sen” are considered passages for energy, and correspond with blood vessels in the body. During a traditional Thai massage, the healing process is supposed to help the body regain its balance as when the “Sen” becomes blocked, the energy in the body becomes stagnant which can lead to a series of ailments. Having a traditional Thai massage acts as an external stimulant to unblock the energy lines and this type of massage is often compared to modern yoga as it includes postures designed to keep the body fit. It is common that after such a massage that the body feels rejuvenated . A traditional Thai massage is definitely a dual purpose activity as it relaxes your body but also in a way stimulates it, and encourages harmony with the environment. Thai oil massage is another very popular massage and is very good for the skin. The oil being applied with a fluid motion which is designed to relax the body and relieve tension. Thai foot massage uses the ancient methods of Chinese reflexology points to also relieve stress, tension and pain throughout the entire body. The biggest benefit of a proper foot massage is the positive effect it has on internal organs and overall health.

| TRAVEL & ATTRACTIONS
By John Borthwick
T Congratulations to our long time contributor John Borthwick who has recently won the prestigious ‘gong' of Travel Writer of the Year in the Australian Society of Travel Writers’ annual awards. Ed.
he Hana Highway, Hawaii’s most beautiful drive, is making a fool of me. This tenacious, twisting road clings to the northeast coast of the island of Maui for 100 dramatic kilometres and on its way crosses 59 bridges and winds through 620 bends. It starts from the sugar-and-surf town of Pa’ia on the north shore, heading towards Hana village out on the eastern tip of Maui. A late afternoon downpour soon unloads, reminding me of why a rainforest, through which I am driving, is so named. And now, as the light fades towards dusk, I can’t find the headlights on this rental car that I just picked up. The Hana Highway with its dozens of one-lane bridges is a polite highway. Cars must slow to a crawl if not a halt at each bridge, giving way to oncoming vehicles, which is usually done with a friendly wave that is returned by both Hawaiian and haole (white) drivers. Meanwhile, back at the dashboard, I’m feeling far from polite about my un-lit vehicle. Where is that bloody light switch?
This serpentine road that was carved out of the volcanic coastal cliffs in the late 19th and early 20th centuries allows me brief glimpses down to little coastal villages like Wailua. Meanwhile, the rain and forest are closing in, along with the deepening dusk. It looks like I’m going to have to lose face big-time, to play the Completely Stupid Haole Just Off the Plane and flag down some gnarly but cool local dude and mumble, “Shucks. I can’t operate these-here left-hand drive headlights.” But just as the dusk fades to black — eureka! — I find the switch. Don’t ask. It was “hidden” right in front of my nose. The old ranching village of Hana is surrounded by black sand beaches and is shaded by palms, volcanic plugs and a chapel spire. Instead of the high-rise condominiums that dominate other shorelines in Maui, Hana is still easily recognisable as the tranquil, verdant place to which the old Hawaiian nobles once came for healing and rest. Its Hasegawa General Store, with its tin roof and anarchic aisles, is almost a place of legend, an island institution where you can find everything from postcards and parsnips to chainsaws and flip-flops while you rub shoulders with those gnarly-cool locals. “Holo-holo” is Hawaiian for day-tripping, which is what I do for the next few days while based at Hana. Eastern Maui is dominated by the great volcanic mountain, Haleakala — “the House of the Sun” — with small villages, sacred pools and hidden valleys being the scenic epaulettes, so to speak, on the shoulders of this 3055-metre giant. I wander, exploring its landscape of pastures, old plantations and a wave-battered coast.
18
When it comes time to re-trace my route to Pa’ia, the Hana Highway (which is on the US National Register of Historic Places) shows me it’s kinder side. The sun is out. Waterfalls bloom beside the road. Doves and mongooses flit or skitter among the trees, pecking at windfall feasts. The canopy that overhangs the road seems like a fruit salad forest, being laden with mango, breadfruit, banana, coconuts and red ginger. For good reason this fertile region has long been known as Heavenly Hana.

TRAVEL & ATTRACTIONS Pa’ia means “loud roar”, referring to the prevailing afternoon onshore winds and the giant winter surf breaking at the offshore reef nicknamed “Jaws”. At Ho’okipa Beach, east of Pa’ia, one person’s roar is another’s transport of delight. From the beach I watch a frenetic circuit of windsurfers and kitesurfers slash in, out and over the wind-whipped swells, their triangular sails like the vivid wings of butterflys-on-steroids. I turn inland, up the slopes of sacred Haleakala, to the area known as plain “Upcountry”. In places here the landscape seems almost familiar, reminiscent of northern New South Wales, Australia, with sugarcane farms, huge eucalypts and jacaranda trees. Elsewhere, the old, rustic villages like Makawao have been prettified with pastels and B&B guesthouses, while the old paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) ranches have been gentrified to polo fields. The historic whaling port of Lahaina on the west coast is far better known than Maui’s main commercial capital, Kahului. The Eagles even wove it, scathingly, into a song, The Last Resort, about new arrivals who “leave it all behind and sail to Lahaina”, just as the early missionaries did, bringing “the white man's burden, the white man's reign”. The rambling Pioneer Inn, which looks like a classic Queensland country pub that’s had a good scrub-up, has stood on the Lahaina quay since the roaring days of 1901. Late one afternoon I settle in on its porch with an old Hawaiian friend, Pete and over a beer or three, we talk story and watch the sunset cruise boats shuttle in and out. The Inn’s timbers themselves almost talk, the rigging of yachts in the marina answers back and as the sun does its slomo sizzle into the sea, Pete tells me the Polynesian creation myth of Maui’s great mountain. A cool but gnarly young demi-god named Maui once lassoed the sun as it raced across the sky and tethered it to a mountain peak. He wanted there to be more daylight for his mother to finish her tasks. The sun made a deal with Maui that, in return for its freedom, it would slow its passage across the sky and thus make the days last longer. Maui unshackled the sun from the mountain which then became known as Haleakala, the House of the Sun.

The ringing of bells at New Year is highly significant, just like people in Times Square count down The Ball Drop , Chinese people believe that the ringing of a huge bell can drive bad luck away, and bring good fortune.Recently this passion has become incredibly popular, with pilgrims going to mountain temples to hear the first ringing. Hashan Temple in Suzhou, is very famous for this.
• Staying Up Late & Bai Nian
Just like everybody in the western world, Chinese people stay up late after their banquet to wait for the appointed hour. After celebrating the bells sounding, it is common for people to change clothes and greet each other again with bows and “Gongxi”, congratulations. In some families and villages it can take up to a fortnight to visit all the relatives and perform Gongxi.
• Firecrackers
Although not as popular as in the past, lighting firecrackers is an important custom. Right as the clock strikes 12 and the bell tolls, towns and cities are lit up with the sight and sound of exploding firecrackers. Although in inner cities today, local government officials are clamping down on this practice, health and safety perhaps gone too far!
• Hong Bao / Red Envelope
The Red Envelope is a delight for kids all over China, it is a New Year present from parents and grandparents and is money given to them in a Red Envelope. The money is meant to bring good luck, ward off evil spirits . Hence its nickname Lucky Money, although I would call any money given as a gift as lucky of whatever amount or denomination. The money is placed inside red envelopes because red is perceived as a lucky colour, so therefore Hong Bao is doubly lucky to receive. Traditionally all these customs and time-honoured practices were to celebrate the festival and to honour deities as well as ancestors. Not only is Chinese New Year or Spring Festival enjoyed in mainland China but also in; Thailand, Cambodia, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mauritius and the Philippines. Chinese New Year is celebrated with must gusto and has many significant connotations. Obviously like every other culture in the world, the New Year festivities are something that involves fun and frolics, but also it is a time that everybody pauses and reflects what has past and what is to come. It is a time when families gather together and friendships are solidified, and it is a time perhaps to take a more adventurous path in life and move on.

Pattaya Personalities - Earl & Eva
By Kevin Cain
M
any of our readers, especially those who enjoy Northern Soul Music, will have certainly heard of the “Souled Out” events that are now part of Pattaya’s ever evolving music scene. To celebrate an amazing 5 years of these events our Pattaya Personality feature this month, focuses on the two originators and driving forces behind these most successful nights namely Eva Johnson and Earl Brown. Eva has been over here for twelve years; her parents are Polish, although she was born in the UK, and has enjoyed lengthy spells of residing in Australia and New Zealand. Today she lives in Pattaya but travels to visit family and friends throughout the year. She has been happily married for 45 years which is a testament to her commitment and passion for things that she loves. Her husband Keith can regularly be seen as one of the DJs at the Souled Out events and is also a real fan of the genre,
Earl came to Thailand 13 years ago and after traveling around Asia, finally settled in Pattaya. Originally hailing from Yorkshire it is no surprise that he loves cricket. He played for several years for The Pattaya Cricket Club and can often be seen in Jameson’s Irish Pub with a pint watching the latest England game. A regular on the networking scene Earl has also been involved in several charity events including the TFI initiative. Motorsport is another love of his being part of the management or the very successful TR Motorsport Racing Team. Career wise Earl is the Marketing & Communications Manager for CEA Project Logistics in Laem Chabang, now into his 4th year with the company and with a young family to keep him occupied it’s quite apparent he is a very busy man indeed! So how did these two meet up and start these very popular events? I eagerly waited for their arrival as being heavily into the music myself I had many questions to ask them and the first was obviously why Northern Soul in Thailand ? Eva leaned across the interview table and animatedly started to relay their story. Her love of Northern Soul blossomed right from the early days in Southern England when she instantly fell in love with this new genre of radical music. Earl from Northern England had been influenced by his parents, who were Casino regulars. He was even named after one of his father’s favourite artists Earl Wright, who with his orchestra had the classic track “Thumb a Ride”. So it was only natural that the young “Ginger Prince” would develop a love for all things Soul.. Due to the social media scene they were both involved in, Eva and Earl formed a friendship that was based on their mutual love of the music, Eva posted on FB that she had just been to a Bobby Womack gig at the Jazz Cafe and communication started flowing. After many chats an idea was formulated, namely to host a Northern Soul Night in Pattaya. The Play Club Walking Street was booked as the very first venue and flyers distributed around town. The inaugural “Northern Soul” event was on and Pattaya would never look back. The first night was a huge success with 130 fans and their hangers on all partying like they were back at Wigan Casino. The name “Souled out” would come later as Earl explained “ In the beginning the music format was strictly Northern, it has somewhat changed a little to encompass a wider soul demand from the ever expanding number of punters. Nowadays don’t be surprised to hear Motown, Philly and some Modern Soul early on in the evening before the real stuff begins”.

Due to our dynamic duo’s great organisational skills, local businesses sponsored the evening with money being raised for charity as a byproduct of all the fun and frolics. The Mercy Centre Pattaya was the first beneficiary of the soul fraternity’s first outing and many more would follow as the event was destined for bigger and better things. Other charities such as; The Melissa Cosgrove Foundation, Hand to Hand and Take Care Kids have all benefited from people attending these evenings and dancing to the music they love - with a liberal sprinkling of talc on the floor - of course !
The Soul scene in general has always been a special club, it is a genre of music that had to be sought after even in its heyday. There were always special clubs to go to random radio shows to try and find on the dial, and record stores that were classed as specialist. It has never been easy as a soul fan to listen to your favourite artists. You always had to work hard to indulge your passion and Northern Soul is a stage on from this which is where the respect and love of nights like “Souled Out” emanates from. It is indeed a testimony to the success of Eva & Earl’s devotion to their favourite music that the event has grown from strength to strength, and it is by no coincidence that more soul music can now be heard across the city. Scooters Bar often hosts Soul nights as does the Lion Pub, and bands such as Innersoul and Helmut and Friends are appearing on a regular basis. The next “Souled Out” (the 5th anniversary year event) should have been held in November last year but was rearranged due to the official 30 day morning periord and will now take place on the 28th January 2017 at the now regular venue the Access Inn on 3rd Road. Pay at the door @ 400 baht, with free flow San Mig Light, Red & White Wine and Soft Drinks till 10pm. This event’s charity The Navy Wives Association Sattahip School For Special Needs Children is an especially worthy cause as it only exists through the generous donations of well-wishers; Both Eva and Earl were keen to give thanks to all the Sponsors, Venue owners, general helpers and many DJs (including the Pattaya Trader’s own contributor Ivan) who have helped to make these events such a great success. They would also like to give a special mention to Claudio who was one of the early DJs his untimely passing in 2014 was a great loss to all. Gone but never forgotten.
If you want a blinding night out, plus the feel good factor of supporting a good cause, then I thoroughly recommend getting down to the Access Inn on Saturday the 28th.

Break Out The Talc! - Its Northern Soul Time
G
rowing up a Soul Boy and being the pretentious brat of a fifteen year old Soul DJ in mid-70’s Liverpool, slabs of 7 inch plastic Northern Soul records were constantly on my decks at school dances and community halls.I had just missed the heyday of the Northern Soul movement mid 60’s, and the famous venues of the Wigan Casino, Blackpool Mecca, Twisted Wheel and the Golden Torch, but the music was still very much in vogue.
It still baffles me how on earth this most individual style of black American soul music ever became so popular and of all places in Northern England. The mill towns and factory places seemed an awfully long way from Detroit or Chicago but the fact was Ric-Tic records along with London, Chess and the rest were flooding into clubs and venues in Wigan, Blackpool, Wolverhampton and Manchester. The whole movement was not about the DJ’s, but all about the sound and the more obscure a track was (cover up), the more it packed the dance floors. The music was little known in America, never mind England. Mostly recorded on small labels by unheard of artists but for some inexplicable reason the kids of Northern England loved it and along with the Northern Soul movement came many new fads and traditions. The “all nighter” was born, anthems were invented, it was the precursor to “dance weekenders” and new fashions and new ways to dance were invented. Throwing talcum powder on the dance floor, stripping your shirt off and gyrating to the fast pace of the rhythms, almost to exhaustion was all part of the ritual of attending a Northern Soul night. Often a vast amount of amphetamines were being consumed just to take the dancers into early morning. Being into Northern Soul was like being a member of a private club, only those who really got what the music meant and adored the artists were allowed in. It didn’t matter if you were black or white, from Liverpool or Manchester, if you were in the elite club then you were accepted. Northern Soul crossed all the boundaries that existed in 60’s Britain. It was a way to rebel through music and to be part of a scene that nobody else quite understood, friends met in the Casino or at the Pier and would become friends for life.
Frank Wilson, Irma Thomas, Darrell Banks, Bobby Patterson, Bobby Sheen, Jack Montgomery and all the other legendary artists, still blast out from pounding sound systems in halls, hotels, soul weekenders, and function rooms all over the globe, anywhere the elite club has a presence. Perhaps some of the dance moves are not as energetic and the participants might not last the whole night through but the music will endure and live on forever. As long as there is a dance floor, a deck for vinyl, and perhaps the odd can of talc, Northern Soul will never die. The lyrics from the anthem by Jimmy Radcliffe sort of sums the whole thing up:Let me tell you Long after tonight is all over Long after it's all gone I'll be yours For ever and a day and Yours, come anything that may You'll always be just everything to me
Long Live Northern Soul !
It is a testament to the movement and music that today Northern Soul is still loved across the globe. Jimmy Radcliffe,

The Super Bowl 2017
S
uper Bowl 2017, more commonly known as Super Bowl LI (51), is back on the 5th of February and will once again go indoors. This time the mammoth summit of the season’s National Football League will be held at Houston’s awesome NRG Stadium. The NRG Stadium is the only rodeo and NFL indoor / outdoor retractable roof stadium that can be configured to utilize a 125,000 square foot space. The 72,220 capacity will be full to the rafters come 6:30pm eastern time with the cheering supporters of the two contesting finalists. Although the Super Bowl is far younger than the World Series, the Masters or the Kentucky Derby, the NFL championship game has now become an American institution and virtually a national holiday, the whole of the country comes to a full and complete stop. The origins of this momentous competition lying in the creation of the American Football League (AFL) back in 1960. This was when a group of successful business men got together because they wanted their own football franchises but were frustrated by the NFL’s unwillingness to expand, the AFL forged ahead as an alternative league. So a rivalry was started that would help propel pro football ahead of baseball as the most popular spectator sport in the country by the end of the decade. In 1966 while England were winning the World Cup of football on another continent, the NFL and AFL negotiated a merger agreement in which the two leagues would join in 1970.Whilst waiting for this to happen, the champions of both leagues would face off at the end of the season and the Super Bowl was born. Since then many traditions have been born associated with the Super Bowl and one of the greatest is the half time show. Artists that have performed in the past have been; U2, Paul McCartney, Prince, Rolling Stones, Madonna, The Who, Bruno Mars, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Petty, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Katy Perry and this year………...it’s Gaga Time. The huge global star, winner of six Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe, and Academy Award nominee, will headline the Pepsi Zero Sugar Super Bowl LI Halftime Show. Just writing the official title was hard, I can’t imagine the presenter announcing that mouthful. The show will come just three months after the release of her latest album, Joanne. Lady Gaga has appeared before at the occasion during Super Bowl 50, when she sang “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Levi’s Stadium before the Denver Broncos

v Carolina Panthers game. The Super Bowl is also famous for the breaking of new advertisements by the major corporations, advertisers are expected to spend over $4 million dollars on a 30 second commercial. In 2017 Toyota, Doritos and Bud Light are all releasing new commercials during the game. Only in America would people cue up in anticipation to watch a commercial! I wonder do they have ads to advertise the advertisements? Americans are renowned for liking their food, and the Super Bowl is responsible for the most food consumed across the country in any one day apart from Thanksgiving. If you were wondering what are the choice items on the menu are then you would not be far off if you guessed Chicken wings, chips and pizza top of the list. I do not know how they came up with the figures but apparently 28 million lbs of chips, 1.2 billion chicken wings and more than 48 million pizzas will be devoured.
Betting is another tradition that has been formulated along with the growth and popularity of the occasion. It is the biggest betting event in the American sporting calendar and in 2016 it was estimated that $99 million dollars was bet legally with of course plenty of illegal bets as well. For as with most sporting bets across the world you can now bet on just about anything. How quickly the first score will come, to what colour the juice will be poured over the coach of the winning team. Not to be missed out, even the President gets in on the act. For many years t has been tradition for the President of The U.S.A to phone the Super Bowl’s winners, perhaps in time to come this may change to a Tweet or a FB post. The New York Jets being the first winning team back in 1969 to start a tradition of the champions touring the White House after the big game. As well as traditions there are many superstitions associated with the Super Bowl, many have to watch the game with the same people as the year before. Surprisingly even the stock exchange is caught up in the hype and hysteria, it is believed that if a NFC team wins, the market and economy will do better during the year.So whether you’re a Patriots, Cowboys, Seahawks or Chiefs fans there will be plenty of opportunities to catch the game right here in Pattaya although it might mean an early start or extremely late night as the live kick off should be 6:30 a.m. local time!

X Games - Butter Milk Mountain Aspen - 2017
R
eaders of this particular section of the Pattaya Trader will know that we try to cover a wide range of sporting events. Football (Soccer to our friends from the US of A), Golf, Tennis, Boxing, you name it we have covered in one way or another. For this edition we fancied a bit of change and decided to take a look at the X Games being held in Aspen, Colorado. You could be forgiven at this point in wondering what these games are all about. Don’t sweat, read on and all will be revealed.
Extreme Sports The X Games has actually been around since 1995, when its inaugural event took place at Newport, Rhode Island and Mount Snow, Vermont. It proved an instant hit, with 500,000 fans attending. Since the first outing media exposure has been pretty full on which in part goes a long way to help us understand the success story of these games thus far. Also a combination of big name sponsors, top-tier athletes and consistently high fan attendance have helped the annual sports event gain real traction. Split into two separate events, the Summer X games are usually held in August with the Winter X Games being held in January (or February)
Current Winter Events The main theme of course for any good winter sports event is a cold backdrop, allowing for the following to take place: • Skiing • Snowboarding • Snowmobile Aspen makes the perfect venue for some top extreme sports events, with this year promising to be even better than previous ones. Temperatures are predicted to be in and around the freezing mark. For those of us who can’t view the games live from Colorado the “Real Video Series” is where the best riders and filmers produce premium video content. Expect to see some stunning recorded action from the 2016 / 2017 winter season with the contents being run on XGames.com in November 2017.
This Year's Schedule The time zone for Aspen is MT (Mountain Time), which to save you going to Google means that the events start 14 hours behind the local time in Pattaya.Assuming that 90 odd percent of our readers are based here in the Land of Smiles the following times will apply for the events:
Friday 27th Jan 1:30 AM - Special Olympics Unified Snowboarding Final 2:30 AM - Men’s Ski Slopestyle Qualifying 4:00 AM - Snowmobile SnoCross Adaptive Final 4:30 AM - Snowmobile SnoCross Round 1 & Final 10:00 AM - Women’s Snowboard Big Air Final 10:45 AM - Men’s Snowboard SuperPipe Final If you happen to check on the web you will of course see that these events are scheduled for the Thursday; however, due to the significant time difference they actually take place the following day in Pattaya time zone! Therefore the best place to catch these events may well be from one of the sports bars in town such as Retox on either Soi Lengkee or Soi Honey, settle down with some beers and enjoy the action….

The X Games has made a point since its inception of trying to stage an eco-friendly event, with measures taken including the use of biodiesel fuel in the vehicles used. However it is interesting to note that no drug testing has ever been carried out on competitors, leading to stern words from the World Anti-Doping Agency director general David Howman and the International Olympic Committee president Thomas Bach. From a technology standpoint, the 2015 Winter X Games represented a first from broadcaster ESPN. The media giant made use of camera drones to capture some stunning aerial

me the jitters as he had to be close to the anchor rope. Off round the boat he went ending at the back. This fish was giving me a workout and every time I got him close I thought I had him. Not so, he still had a lot left in the tank, off he went. After 35 to 40 minutes I had a 6.25 kg queen fish in the net, one of my biggest and the camera was at home!
I
n the winter months the wind comes from the north east and the daytime tides are small. So on a rising tide anchoring is tricky as the wind will have more effect than the tide. You may get the anchor to hold only for the wind to ease off and the boat will start to drift. That’s what happened when I took the new boat to Koh Man Wichia. In the end I put two anchors down to hold the boat. It’s difficult to fish for big fish in these conditions as the floats go to the front of the boat, where the anchor rope is. With the usual three float rigs and one straight to the bottom I started fishing for small fish. Things were not going well, the bottom bite was off and that means less food for the big fish. However having gone the distance out I hung in. Patience was rewarded, three hours in and one rod bent over. Being in strange conditions it was a blessing that the fish took off sideways, away from the other rods and the anchor rope. I saw the line rising and I knew that it was a queen fish (bpla salat) about to jump. Up he went and I thought 3 or 4 kgs a decent fish. I had to get this one as I own a favor to a local fisherman. Around the boat he went and diving back down, I took this chance to reel in the small bottom rig. One more jump and I thought that the fish would be soon coming in, and he did. This fish had been to Tony’s gym, he was not done yet, the fight started to be a straight up and down slugfest. I got the float stop knot through the rod rings only for the fish to take off again. The line started to rise and sure enough he jumped quite close to the boat, it was a bigger fish. Now he headed with the tide towards the anchor rope and the other lines. Time and again he switched sides giving

The next day I had a run out with Frank, I picked him up 8.40 at Hat Deawan. We had planned to go to Koh Hoo Chang but as it was breezy we decided to fish close to Koh Larn. As we started out we were heading straight into the sharp peaky waves created by the wind and the wakes of the speed boats. What I did not know was the guy who built my new boat had left a gap between the hull and the front cuddy which was sealed inside the boat creating a 50 litre space. So it was a surprise when we started to get waves coming over the front and into the boat. I told Frank to bail out and as he leant forward the boat dipped further down. In a very short time things had gone from bad to worse. I started to head for shore but once the water starts to come in the boat is lower in the water and more water comes in. At this point it became a point of saving us, and maybe the boat. The rescue boat turned up and at first tried to tow us to the beach but it was too late for that. As Frank (who cannot swim and always wears a life jacket) went to transfer to the rescue boat, the boat capsized. I had my seat filled with foam and this kept the boat afloat upside down. In fact minutes later two guys clambered on to the hull and tried to right the boat, unsuccessfully. So we got towed to the beach, turned the boat over and sort of beached it in a sea of two foot waves. Many things came together, Frank in the boat, two full fuel tanks, spare engine in for repairs (all the weight at the wrong places), but the gap at the front was the main cause. Luckily it happened close to shore and plenty of boats around to raise the alarm. Yesterday I had gone 10 kilometres to Koh Man Wichia alone in rougher seas, no problem. However it was an accident waiting to happen, scary stuff. Have fun, Roger. I would like to thank the emergency services for their prompt attention, the local jet ski guys for their help on Deawan beach. And to my fishermen friends in Naban for getting my boat home. All wonderful people, helping a foreigner who just happens to live here. Thank you.

ver the years we have seen famous and some would say “famously overpaid” football players give back to the sport. From David Beckham’s Academy now both in London and LA, to the legendary feats of Didier Drogba for his own Ivory Coast, Olivier Giroud has lent his name and support to Acadena. Check out his video http://acadena.org/ and whilst you’re there discover more about this great idea bringing talented kids from the slums of Bangkok to the Acadena House in Nong Pru. There to be trained and educated to a standard whereby they hope to gain scholarships and completely transform their lives.
The founder of Acadena: Charly Nomdedeu had his own football hopes tragically dashed after a car crash at the age of 20 but has remained a lover of the sport turning his attention instead to training and coaching. This has included working with the world famous JMG Academy which has branches as far apart as Vietnam Egypt. Ghana, Mali, Algeria and Belgium Also, through his good friend Marco Fortune who was lucky enough to have a professional footballing career Charly has garnered the support of other famous names including: Christope Jallet and Dimitri Payet to bring attention to this great idea. This in turn has given rise to plenty of publicity such as reports on Thai PBS, CNN and a soon to be recorded 15 minute documentary on France’s premier SFR Sport 1 Channel. So, with all the interest and publicity there is plenty of opportunity for any local businesses wishing to do good and at the same time get fantastic exposure by sponsoring these kids. As with all great football kits there is space available on the shirts for your brand to join Adaena’s main sponsor Engie Foundation and help with the costs. Costs such as: food, transport the rental of the house and even the football pitch where training takes place. Also the cost of the “Mai baan” a much needed cook, cleaner, laundry woman, nurse and general mother figure for these 11-13 year olds. These all have to be met for Charly to keep this going. So even if you are a private sponsor who just wishes to make a donation you can do so via the website or by contacting Charly direct via his email address: charly@acadena.org
Kick Start 2017 by really helping these kids !

F
or Thai racing drivers there are few lures greater than contesting the Macau Grand Prix and for one of our leading young rising stars Pasin Lathouras – a name well known to Pattaya race fans – it really is a lure, this was his fourth consecutive year driving a ‘GT’ sportscar on the streets of the Chinese principality. Adding to the allure, the famous ‘GT’ race has been reborn into a new era of blistering competitiveness. The FIA GT World Cup arrived in the Macau for the first time last year and Pasin was lucky enough to gain an entry into the midst of the best of the best. It proved to be a successful ‘world cup’ debut for the Thai driver as he kept away from the walls and worked his way up the running order to finish tenth, the only non-professional driver in the top ten as well as being the youngest competitor on the race. Move forward one year. The inaugural edition of the FIA GT World Cup really caught the imagination and the second running, mid last November, saw more factory teams and drivers taking part. The FIA explained the concept behind the ‘World Cup’ initiative in a statement to accompany the second edition, which read: “The creation of a GT World Cup is a way of harmonising all GT championships taking place all over the world, since it is imperative to contest a series recognised by the FIA and based on the FIA technical regulations in order to be eligible for qualification to the GT World Cup. FIA GT World Cup has become a reference event for GT drivers or manufacturers – an event that absolutely must feature among their record of achievement.” And it really was a reference event. To say the entry list was at a ‘world class’ level is an understatement and there were four full factory teams in action – Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche and Lamborghini – with factory drivers as well as a string of further factory supported teams. The winners of the last five GT races to be held in Macau were included on the entry list. The FIA GT

World Cup brought the best of the best together. For Pasin, this year he was behind the wheel of the new Ferrari 488 GT3 for the first time – a big step up from the predecessor 458 GT3 he used for the last three years, but with a small team and without the mega bucks and factory support of the front runners he was going to have to fight to make his mark. It started well for Pasin, who turned 23 years old just after the event was over, as in free practice as he banged in times that put him in the ballpark – but a clunk with the wall early in the qualifying session left him with a mountain to climb in the ‘semi final’ and ‘final’ – and in Macau passing is virtually impossible. In the end the ‘World Cup Final 2016’ turned out to be one of the strangest races in living memory. There were just four laps in total, a rolling start that saw the race red flagged on the opening lap, then a lengthy delay before the race was restarted and again on the restart lap the race was red flagged. This time, due to concerns about light conditions (the GT race had already late thanks to incidents that occurred during the preceding touring car race pushing the programme back), there would be no third rolling start and the results were declared final. In fact the winner finished the race with the car on the roof having dramatically flipped over and slid along the track at high speed upside down while lying in second place on the road – and that really just about summed up this year’s edition. For Pasin there was simply nothing he could do during a race that didn’t even see even one full racing lap. He enjoyed a good start and again performed superbly on the restart, keeping track position and avoiding incidents, but he would finish where he started in P14, having survived through a long tough week on this track to record a fighting finish. This year’s FIA GT World Cup will certainly go down as something of a historical novelty. Pasin had added another appearance at Macau to his racing ‘CV’ but he just didn’t get the chance to fight for a top ten position. He was reflective after the race. “We made a good start to the week in practice and looked to be in good shape but matters really conspired against us and in the end there wasn’t really a race, just two rolling starts, and so there was nothing we could do to try to fight back from our earlier setback and aim for a strong finish,” said the Thai. “It really was an odd event I have never seen anything like it and I think everyone already will be thinking about next year’s event.”

Gorgeous George

n a grim year when far too many talented artists were snatched from us I was saddened to read that “George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period.” With the voice of an angel who some may have considered fallen. Amongst stories of car crashes whilst under the influence, the arrest for a “lewd act” in the “restroom of a Beverley Hills park and the banning of “I want your Sex” on radio stations in the UK and US - the talent would not be denied. Like Prince, also untimely snatched from us last year, George took issue with the music industry and in particular his record label Sony, refusing to conform to the strict limitations they imposed upon him and the marketing of his brilliant “Listen without Prejudice”. ‘Freedom” remains to this day, one of my very favourite songs and certainly videos – launching Supermodels and catwalk struts from young fans with hairbrushes in bedrooms everywhere. His evolution can be seen in the photos of his all too short life – especially through the many haircuts ! From Wham with School boy buddy Andrew Ridgely, the bouffant of his ‘Careless Whisper” video and then the altogether cooler images of Faith and his subsequent albums. There were also the really memorable duets, for example when George introduced his uninitiated young fans to the magical Aretha Franklin with “I knew you were waiting for me” and the best rendition ever of “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” – how must Elton John be feeling with so many loved ones now departed ? Then “If I told you that” with Whitney and the completely wonderful “As” with Mary J Blige. Just go on You Tuber right now and remind yourself how really great singers sound. The winner of a multitude of Grammys, Brits, Ivor Novello, Billboard,MTV and American music awards the thoughtful “Older” album was penned after the loss of George’s partner Anselmo Feleppa who died of an AIDS-related brain haemorrhage. In a later interview Michael said "It was terrifying news. I thought I could have the disease too. I couldn't go through it with my family because I didn't know how to share it with them – they didn't even know I was gay.” And "It was a terribly depressing time. It took about three years to grieve, then after that I lost my mother. I felt almost like I was cursed” In a lighter mood George satarised his arrest by Marcelo Rodríguez who was part of California’s "pretty police/sting operation” with the brilliant “Outside” . This was accompanied by a video featuring George dressed as a policeman in a disco latrine! He gave much of his time and money to charity with Band Aid, Live Aid, The Nelson Mandela and Freddy Mercury Tributes and substantial donations to many charities in particular helping the Rainbow trust raise 20 million pounds for terminally ill children. Such a shame that after a period of illness over the last 5 years following his bout of pneumonia and close call at the Vienna General Hospital and just when he was planning a comeback album collaboration with Naughty Boy, that George Michael should be snatched from us. What a loss ! What a voice !

Rising oil prices, cheap domestic stocks and weaker sterling will create the perfect storm for the FTSE 100, boosting it to a record 7340 by the end of 2017 according to AJ Bell investment director Russ Mould.
BUSINESS NEWS
FTSE 100 will smash 7300 in 2017, AJ Bell predicts
Cyclical stocks will have their moment in the sun in 2017, rebounding sharply from their 2016 lows, Mould also predicts. Over the last five years, the UK market’s bias toward financials, oil & gas and mining stocks, which also make up 44% of the FTSE 100’s market cap, has proved a major hindrance to the economy, causing it to lag behind international peers on a total returns, sterling-denominated basis. But by the same token, 'the FTSE 100’s previously unpropitious mix' could provide one of its biggest boons, in Mould's opinion. Current analysts’ forecasts suggest that financials, oil & gas and mining FTSE 100 stocks will account for 52% of its £1.7tn in revenues, 48% of its total profits and 49% of the index’s total dividends. “Moreover these sectors represent 76% of the growth in profits that is expected for 2017 and 52% of the expected growth in dividends for next year,” said Mould. Under these conditions, he thinks it is conceivable that the FTSE 100 will advance 6% from where it stands currently and reach 7340 by the end of the year. “That might not sound like a lot but that gain would be supplemented by a dividend yield of around 4%, making for a 10% total return,” Mould stressed. “That is a figure well beyond anything on offer from even the best cash accounts or ISAs and which also dwarfs the 1.49% yield currently on offer from 10-year UK Government bonds, although the stock market comes with the greater risk of loss than cash or bonds.”However, the FTSE 100’s ascension next year could be jeopardised by a number of factors – rising interest rates in the US, higher government bond yields, a dollar that is too strong and oil prices that have climbed too high. “All could hit global growth and short-circuit the “reflation” trade which has become popular post the UK’s Brexit vote and the election of President Trump,” he explained. And a drop in earnings could leave the UK market exposed on the downside, Mould said, regardless of whether levels of corporate profits are maintained or exceed their targets. “Despite these risks, however, the UK’s 4%-plus dividend yield and the value opportunities potentially presented by the banks, insurers and other domestic facing plays do suggest the FTSE 100 has upside potential to offer in 2017,” he argued. To exploit the future opportunities presented by the recently unloved cyclical giants of the FTSE 100 index, Mould recommends investors look to value focused funds like the Jupiter UK Special Situations fund and Buxton’s Old Mutual UK Alpha vehicle. The Artemis Income fund headed by Adrian Frost, which has BP, Royal Dutch Shell and Lloyds among its top ten holdings and is comprised of 75% large caps, should also perform well, Mould anticipates.

Good news for investors in a New Year. I got an email from a reader last week asking if she should use a “wrap” to hold her investments as her adviser had recommended. In the US the concept of Fund Supermarkets is very well developed and most retail investors would use these. In the UK, the concept is also quite well developed with the terms WRAPs, Platforms and Fund Supermarkets quite interchangeable. Dealing directly with retail clients investing forty to fifty thousand pounds is quite expensive and the charges you pay to say Jupiter, Henderson and the likes reflect this. The Jupiter Merlin fund range for example charges about 2.54% per annum to invest your money. If you consider that some of the largest pension funds in the UK will also invest with Jupiter & Henderson, then you’d think they wouldn’t be investing small amounts. The British Airways Pension Scheme with £12bn in funds might want to give Jupiter £500m of this. What happened in the past is that BAPS would negotiate a fee. Later Jupiter would create a special lower cost version to market to institutional investors as it was now inexpensive for Jupiter to look after large sums of money.
The good news is that retail investors can now access low cost institutional share classes through a platform or wrap, because it’s much less expensive for a fund manager to deal with the platform as one client who in turn might have twenty thousand individual clients. You can still go directly but minimum investment is 5 million sterling. In terms of our understanding, we know that 1) platforms or WRAPs will charge us a fee although 2) the cost of investment funds will be lower – so is there a benefit overall ? A typical platform fee seems to be in the range of 0.25%pa to 1.50%pa, so even adding in this fee it still offers a saving. There seems to be a lot of other benefits too, for example, just having everything in one place and getting one statement or valuation appeals to a lot of older investors (like myself). If you want to switch investments, you don’t have to sell one fund and wait for the money to turn up before investing – a WRAP will allow you to buy into the new fund immediately – they “pre-fund” the purchase. This reduces any ‘out of market’ risk – that is – values go up while you’re waiting on the money to turn up from
Some smart person thought, what if I get a lot of individual investors together and combine all their investments in one place – I could negotiate a discount with the fund manager and keep the difference – Fund Supermarkets were born. In the Jupiter, the current fund supermarket fee is 1.79% pa. This model has been very profitable in the UK for the likes of Hargreaves Lansdown, although a change in legislation that abolished these “secret” fund rebates has made it more challenging.

selling your investment. By logging on to the platform you can keep track of your investments and move everything into cash at the click of a button instead of phoning twelve different firms. What I like most is the ability to see what’s going on in the section of my account that’s run by my investment manager, as well as being able to research funds on the platform that I might buy for my self-managed section. What’s also particularly good is the range of funds available and the way this keeps growing. It seems that if one investment manager identifies a “good” fund, it gets added to the platform and then it’s available to all, although I’m reassured by the fact I can only access regulated funds too – no unregulated rubbish. In different jurisdictions, these WRAPs allow access to different types of investment accounts, for example ISAs and SIPPs in the UK. This ability to have all my investments in one place as well as the cost savings and extensive fund range alongside the fact I can log on day or night, whatever the timezone means I’m a big fan of WRAPs, Platforms or Fund Supermarkets, whatever you call them!
