Songkran Across Thailand
I
t is that time of year again that has grown men running for cover, as a seven year old gunslinger brandishes a water pistol in their general direction. The mean hombre’s one aim is to completely soak his petrified and quaking foe. Yes, once again Songkran is to descend upon an unwitting nation. Nightmares of previous drenchings are still prevalent in many people’s minds and methods of how to avoid the annual soaking are being formulated. However for those of you who actually enjoy the gung ho side of Songkran you many find that this year the celebrations will be a little more muted than usual due to the events of late last year. Just to recap and for any newcomers to the kingdom, the official national holidays for Songkran in 2017 are from the 13th 15th of April. However, there will be celebrations up and down the kingdom beginning on the 12th and ending on the 20th of April. The extended days of the official Songkran festival dates are called Wan Lai, and give license for towns to choose their own particular celebration day or days. Traditionally Chiang Mai and Bangkok are two of the first places to celebrate, usually on the official national holidays. However, places such as Pattaya with a large tourist population, see the commercial benefit of extending the New Year celebrations for as long as possible. Officially the 19th of April is the day that Pattaya will celebrate Songkran, but in reality expect the first bucket full to be houyed on the very first day, probably the 12th and probably along Soi 6 ! There are however, many places around the kingdom where Songkran is celebrated with a more traditional spirit usually around the village temple with a community celebration. If you have not partaken of such an experience I would strongly recommend it. Also there are plenty of places that hardly celebrate at all, just one or two hours of gentle anointing and then back home for a family get together and a communal meal. Most big towns will allocate one or perhaps two days to celebrate, but prepare yourself for “Waterworld” in the tourist areas.

If you are totally against getting a tad wet, then there are great places you can go to to shelter until the robust festivities end. Phuket is one example as apart from Patong and Phuket Town which will be joining in the vociferous celebrations, there are great places to get away from it all on the island. Phuket has many wonderful things to do and see, and high on the list is the incredible scenery and landscape. There are beautiful beaches, amazing jungle, quaint towns and of course stunning national parks.
Phang Nga Bay, For example Phang Nga Bay is one of nature’s finest jewels and is part of the Ao Phang Nga National Park. The Similan Islands and Surin Islands, which are two of Thailand’s biggest diving attractions are also part of Phang Nga Province. Travellers to the area are stunned by the breathtaking beauty of Phang Nga Bay, the sheer limestone karsts burst vertically out of the calm, deep green water. Possibly the most photographed part of Thailand, Phang Nga Bay is recognised instantly anywhere on the planet being truly one of Thailand’s best natural gems and a place where mother nature has decided to show off in some style. enormous, near-vertical limestone cliffs and all the buildings, shacks, huts and restaurants are situated on the man-made stilted area which is where the villagers live and cater to the visiting tourists.
Samet Nangshe Also Samet Nangshe, just a thirty minute drive from Phuket is a fantastic place to offer panoramic views of Phang Nga. At certain times even the Milky Way is visible from Samet Nangshe. The breathtaking vista is exceptional and affords a 180-degree panorama facing due east. Outstretched before your eyes you can see a chain of islands as far as the eye can see from left to right on the horizon.Samet Nangshe is one of the best viewpoints in southern Thailand and is still relatively peaceful, with few tourists. However, reaching the lofty viewpoint is only really for the fit as the ascent is quite steep. The bay is also home to several other splendid attractions including, Koh Ta-pu and Koh Panyee and a leisurely boat excursion is the best way of getting about.Koh Ta-pu or Nail Island became an international star from its appearance in the James Bond movie, “The Man With The Golden Gun.”The limestone rock and cliff formations that jut vertically out from the water are awesome, it is quite incredible how they just do not fall over. No boats are allowed to go too close to the island because of its precarious position, like a reverse iceberg - big on the top and slim at the bottom. It should be noted that many tours take in Koh Ta-pu and the area can be busy with tourists.
So whether you choose to go to some of these places to get away from it all, or prefer to join in on the celebrations, here at the Trader we wish you all a great Songkran and a Happy New Year.
Koh Panyee Another fascinating place not far from Phuket town is Koh Panyee a unique and remarkable village. Koh Panyee is built out over the water and raised up on stilts. At its rear is a gigantic rock overshadowing Koh Panyee in a menacing and sinister manner, dwarfing all around. Most of the island is formed by

Hi Readers So are we all bracing ourselves for the onslaught of another Songkran festival or up for a good water fight? If you feel that you need to get away from it all, have a look at the direct flights now available from U-Tapao airport Singapore is only 2hr 20 mins away Kualar Lumpur 2hr 5 mins and if you still want to stay in Thailand but just avoid the extended Pattaya version of the festival, you can fly to Chiang Mai in just 1 hour 25 minutes or Udon Thani in 1 hr 10. Or how about exploring the waterways of Bangkok ? I like a pun as much as the next man especially when the next man is our award winning travel writer John Borthwick and I’m sure his latest article “King Khlong” has been inspired by the forthcoming Skuill Island movie which looks like it could be a lot of fun.

By John Borthwick
“Venice of the East”, “the Big Mango” and so on. Over the years Bangkok has been lumbered with several farang-concocted sub-titles, none of which Thais use. (Nor, when speaking among themselves, do Thais even call the place “Bangkok” — their capital is Krung Thep.) One term that’s gone right out the window is the colonial sigh, from the days when the capital had a web of canals, “Bangkok, the Venice of the East”. Today that makes as much sense as dubbing Venice “the Bangkok of the West”. A friend and I are paddling kayaks along some of those remaining canals, or khlongs, that once earned the city its faux-Venetian title. This remnant water world is in the Taling Chan district of west bank Bangkok. With temples to the left, and mangroves and monitor lizards to the right, it seems a parallel universe to the vortex of malls and avalanche traffic of midtown Bangkok. “I liked the way of life here when I was young but we’ve lost it,” says Kayak Bangkok’s Khun Boum Niyamosatha as he launches our kayaks from his garden wall beside Khlong Bansai. Having lived 40 years in shade of the canal’s mahogany trees and bamboo copses, Khun Niyamosatha wanted to revive the interest of his fellow, vehicle-obsessed Bangkokians in what he calls “the spirit of the waterways.” He rents kayaks, at the almost philanthropic price of 200 baht, to those who care to rediscover that spirit. Ironically, he often has more foreign customers than Thais, perhaps because, as he notes, “Thais mostly like what is ‘in trend’.” These kayaks are simple craft with just three moving parts — a paddle and your own two arms. With a hand-drawn map written in Thai as our only navigation aid (fortunately I am paddling with a Thai-speaking friend), we set out on a self-guided, 13-km loop. The breeze is at our backs, as is the tide. It’s a lazy Sunday and we glide through the water margins of suburban villages and forgotten marshes. Homes, grand or ramshackle and everything between, made of teak, tin or marble, back onto the khlong. Families sharing lunch overlooking the water do a double take at the apparition of a Thai lady and foreign tourist paddling by. The local traffic is usually longtail boats and occasional hawkers in wooden canoes. Our halfway point is the weekend Lat Mayom floating market, with the khlong running right through its middle. We hop ashore for steamed prawns with noodles and ginger, over which my friend, a professional tour guide, fills in some background. The khlongs were traditionally used for transportation and floating markets. The “Venice of the East”, however, lost its tenuous claim to that name during the 20th century when most of its smaller waterways on the eastern side of the Chao Phraya River — today’s central Bangkok — were filled in for roads and development.

TRAVEL & ATTRACTIONS As for Bangkok’s various names, we are in its suburbs on the Thonburi, or western, side of the river, which was the site of a very early settlement called Bangkok (“village of wild plums”). When the Thai capital moved from there across to the eastern side of the Chao Phraya in 1782, resident foreigners of that time continued to use the old name, Bangkok, for the new settlement. The Thai people, however, used their new city’s proper name, Krung Thep and it remains the term they use in Thai. (The two words, Krung Thep, are the first in the longest capital city name in the world, which in translation goes, “The city of angels, the great city, the residence of the Emerald Buddha …” and ever onwards, in a 20-word litany of superlatives.) Having lunched and cruised the market — one of the region’s best and most authentic — we retrieve our kayaks and paddle back into the floating world of that earlier Bangkok, a place of liquid alleys and water hyacinth, of side-by-side mansions, shanties and spirit houses, plus today’s satellite dishes and longtail boats. Thankfully, the latter see us coming and slow down in order to not swamp our tiny craft with their wash. As for the khlong’s turbid waters, “Don’t fall in” is the only instruction. Passing an ornate Buddhist temple I hear a wave of booming, live, rock music. A kilometer later at the next temple I hear another blast of heavy-metal meditation guitar. So, what’s it all about, Somchai? When young Thai men prepare for their traditional stint of several months as a novice Buddhist monk they often have an investiture party. The celebrations I’ve heard today might herald several young dudes giving up of sex and drink and whatever — but rock n’ roll apparently is much harder to kick. Egrets, reeds, palms and catfish. Dredges, ducks and markets. I could paddle forever through this urban jungle of the most storied kind. But, battling now against the afternoon tide, we round a last bend and there is Khun Niyamosatha’s exuberant garden, and the end of our line. Behind us are probably the best four hours and two hundred baht’s worth of arm work and insights to be had anywhere east of Venice. …................................................................................................ Kayak Bangkok is in Taling Chan, a half-hour drive from midtown. Kayaks cost 200 baht per person, with life jackets provided. Options include a 4, 6 or 13km paddle route; allow 4 hours for the latter. The excursion is self-guided, not escorted; preferably bring a Thai-speaking companion. Book in advance. National Elephant Day
A
lmost twenty years ago the Thai government declared that the 13th of March should be Chang Thai Day or National Elephant Day. This annual day of celebration was created in order to promote awareness in the conservation of Elephants and to reinforce the act of 1963 by the Royal Forest Department naming the white elephant as the national animal of Thailand.
Traditionally and historically, the elephant has held a great place in the hearts of all Thais. The elephant also holds great spiritual significance in the Buddhist religion. It is believed that Queen Maya, the mother of Buddha, was only able to conceive after having a dream that a white elephant entered inside her. You can see this significance in many of the shrines and icons dedicated to the Hindu gods and deities all over the kingdom. The two most powerful are Ganesh and Erawan. Throughout the long and rich history of Thailand, elephants have been used extensively to work alongside the Thai workers. Helping to co-construct temples, dwellings, palaces, clearing forests for planting and carrying timber for building. Thai warriors rode elephants into battle and the more elephants a king had, the richer and more powerful he was considered. This long bond between man and beast was recognised on the old flag of Siam, which featured a white elephant on a red background. You can still see remnants of this on the current Thai Naval Ensign. Although National Elephant Day encompasses all elephants, it is particularly the white elephant that holds the most respect, in fact it is law that all white elephants in Thailand belong to the King. Do not be too confused over the colour, the term “White” does not mean that the animal is albino, in fact “White” elephants are paler than their cousins, but more pink than white. On March the 13th celebrations will be held all over the kingdom, in particular the elephant nature reserves and the palaces and temples that have a special affinity with the elephant such as Wat Phra That Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai.

According to legend, back in the 14th Century holy relics were placed on the back of a white elephant. The animal climbed the mountain at Doi Suthep and before collapsing and dying of fatigue, the sacred elephant marked the spot where the relics should be enshrined by turning round three times and trumpeting thrice. The current white elephant monument commemorates the legend behind the foundation of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. A Thai legend even compared marriage to an elephant:“The husband is the front legs, that choose direction and the wife is the back legs, providing the power “. The best places to go and see elephants in Thailand are at Mae Sa just outside Chiang Mai and Chiang Dao at the elephant camp. South of Chiang Mai on the road to Lampang is the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre. The Centre was opened by Queen Sirikit, and a large section of re-planted teak forest has been restored with the aid of the elephants. At all these centres and camps, after the shows those interested can enjoy a humane ride through the jungle and forest. Many wild elephants in the north of the kingdom are owned by the Karen hill tribe, in fact most mahout uniforms are based on traditional Karen dress. The Thai nation is famous for its superstitions and beliefs, the elephant is held in high esteem and as a token of fortune. Locals will actually pay a mahout to let them pass under the body of their elephant and enjoy the luck duly bestowed upon them. The Thai or Asian elephant is renowned for its high intelligence and it has been proven that it actually thinks deliberately about its actions, rather than simply mimic instructions. The term “White Elephant” is commonly used as an English expression, meaning something that is not wanted. It is believed that this expression had roots back in old Siam but this is disputed quite hotly in many circles. What is true, is that in Siam it was the custom of the king to bestow his pleasure on somebody by giving them a white elephant together with land to keep the animal on to feed and graze. The same gift of a white elephant could be given to mark displeasure, as this was not given with the accompaniment of land. The gift was not allowed to be refused and had to be fed at the receiver’s own cost. It is not surprising the Thai people revere the elephant, with their suspicions and beliefs, even the shape of the country holds awe. If you look closely, Thailand is shaped like an elephant’s head and trunk. The head rests in the north, the ears flap in Issan and the trunk bugles in the deep south towards Hat Yai. Take the opportunity on national elephant day to travel up to the north of Thailand and celebrate along with the elephants their special day. For those that have not experienced this magnificent creature in near to its natural habitat, then it is something that will enrich your life forever. A word of caution, there are many smaller pseudo elephant camps that do not treat the elephants humanely. You can always tell these sort of places from the proper elephant camps, by the condition of the animals and their surroundings. Do not support these places with your patronage, it will only prolong the beasts ill treatment. Chang Thai is a wonderful idea, it is a typically Thai occasion, and something the western world world never dream of celebrating. But here in the Land of Smiles the Thai nation take time to reflect upon the Thai Elephant Warrior, the Royal Pet, the Workmate, the Transporter, the Entertainer and moreover the Friend , worthy of the highest regard.

The U.S Masters - 6th - 9th April 2017
I
t has come to that time of the year again when the first major tournament of the golfing calendar is to be competed for.The Masters always heralds the start of a new golfing season in terms of the four majors. Taking place in April every year, the Masters is the only one of the big four that is played at the same venue every year, namely Augusta. The other three majors being: The U.S Open, The Open Championship and The PGA Championship. The Open Championship is the only tournament that is played outside of America and in 2017 is being held at Royal Birkdale in July during the 20th to the 23rd.The last major of the year is the PGA Championship, and this year competitors will visit Quail Hollow in August. Squeezed in between these tournaments during June is the U.S Open at Erin Hills.
The History Of The Masters The Masters Golf Tournament, more commonly known as The Masters, was started by Augusta National Golf Course designers Clifford Roberts and Bobby Jones back in 1933. One year later the first-ever Augusta National Masters Invitation Tournament was held, with the winner being Horton Smith.Headlines at the time were being dominated by news of Adolf Hitler’s recent policies, Clark Gable attending the Academy Awards dinner, Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig hitting home runs for the New York Yankees. Bobby Jones was big news at Augusta and was dominating the field in the tournament, it came as big shock that he retired in the late 30’s at the tender age of just 28.The inaugural tournament had a format that the golfers first played holes 10-18 as the first nine, and 1-9 as the back nine. The very next year this was reversed, and it has remained that way ever since.
Gary Player Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. During the 1960’s and 1970’s the Masters was dominated by three great men. Gary Player Jack Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer. Between them they won the tournament 11 times during the twenty year span. However from 1980 onwards, non-American golfers were the most successful, and it was the longest losing period in any US tournament for home grown players. Over the years Augusta has been augmented and tweaked. In 1998, the course measured 6925 yards but by 2002 this became longer to 7270 and right up to 7,445 yards in 2006. Going to see The Masters is affordable to many, but tickets are hard to get hold of. Even the practice rounds are normally sold out, with tickets on sale one year prior. Tickets are only sold to members of the patrons list, which is now closed.
The Green Jacket Danny Willett receiving his green jacket as winner of the 2016 Masters Tournament Each year the winner of The Masters is presented with the coveted green jacket, and the Sunday night televising of the victor slipping on the most prized piece of clothing in sporting history is one of the years greatest sporting moments.Normally if you spotted somebody walking around in a shamrock green jacket you would question, either their dress sense or their eyesight. However the tradition of this particular green jacket goes right back to 1937. That year, members of the club wore green jackets so that fans could recognise them. Apparently the inspiration came from a dinner that Bobby Jones attended at The Royal Liverpool Club. The English links club’s captains were all dressed in smart red jackets during the function. Clifford Roberts liked the idea that Bobby Jones relayed about the jackets he had seen, and the first Augusta Club Jackets were bought from Brooks Brothers of New York. During 1937 to 1948 only club members were allowed to wear the jacket, but from 1949 onwards, tournament winners also started to receive one.Sam Snead was the very first winner to wear the famous shamrock green and a year later as with all champions, he had to return it to Augusta. Although past winners can get duplicates made to keep at home.

There is another tradition that has been adopted in the ceremonial presentation of the Green Jacket and that is that the previous year’s champion presents the new champion with his prize. Almost the same ritual as the previous Miss World tottering on her high heels and begrudgingly placing her beloved crown on a new noggin.

considering as his odds are an attractive 300-1.
This years competition looks as though it will be fiercely competed. The top five according to golfodds.com is Jordan Spieth @ 6-1, Rory McIlroy @ 10-1, Jason Day @ 10-1, Hideki Matsuyama @ 12-1 and Dustin Johnson @ 12-1. Old favourites and past winners of Opens, Larry Mize and Sandy Lyle are the rank outsiders at 5,000 -1. Thai golfer Kiradech Aphibarnrat who is currently ranked as 68th in the world, might well be worth
Jason Day and Rory McIlroy are the two golfers that will probably give Jordan Spieth the biggest run for his money. The main talking point at the moment that has fans really excited is the return of an improving Tiger Woods. The four times past winner missed out on the 2016 Masters but is heading back with a vengeance and is an incredible 100-1 in the betting. Possible contenders must also be Bubba Watson, and the 2016 Open champion Dustin Johnson. Do not dismiss lightly Henrik Stenson or PGA winner Jimmy Walker, and of course the returning 2016 Masters Champion Danny Willett. Without doubt the US Masters is one of the greatest sporting occasions in the world, and Sunday’s round will attract over 14 million viewers in the US alone. The whole championship is broadcast throughout the world and eagerly awaited by all sports fans, but of course those with a golf preference will have the most interest. The Masters is also said to be an early indication of the nationality of golfers that will dominate the forthcoming Ryder Cup in 2017. This very rarely rings true, but as the first major to be played in the year it is a common belief but certainly the Masters will prove to be as exciting and competitive as ever and here in Pattaya we will be cheering on Kiradech Aphibarnrat !.

Football Crazy
A
t the moment it is hard to keep up with all the important matches that are currently being played. The Champions League and the Europa League are heading towards the knockout stages, The Premier League is as confusing as ever and there are international qualifying World Cup games taking place.
UEFA Champions League Taking place the week beginning the 13th February are the Champions League round of 16, first leg matches. There are eight tempting games: Bayern Munich v Arsenal, PSG v Barcelona, Real Madrid v Napoli, Leverkusen v Atletico, Manchester City v Monaco, Porto v Juventus, Benfica v Dortmund and Sevilla v Leicester. The second leg of these games will be played on the 8th, 9th & 16th of March. Then the remaining teams will go into the Quarter Final draw on the 17th March. Currently Barcelona are still the favourites to win the trophy with Leicester City being the rank outsiders. Obviously the Quarter Final draw will have a big impact on the betting, however perhaps this year the tournament will throw up a surprise package. The leading goal scorer so far is Lionel Messi and with ten goals he is ahead of the pack by some distance. With such reliable firepower can Barcelona be beaten? The second in the table is Robert Lewandowski of Bayern Munich, but with five goals he only has half of Messi’s haul.Top of the table of assists is also a Barcelona player, Neymar. And yet again he is far away from the chasing pack. Barcelona also top the statistics with number of attempts on target. Rarely are statistics proved wrong, and it will take a mighty effort from the other teams to edge ahead of Barcelona.
Premier League As we come to the final third of the season, Chelsea seem to have a stranglehold of the pole position, and as we go to print Spurs languish nine points behind in second place.Remarkably the team that was really making ground on the London team before Christmas was Liverpool. But with surprise defeats against Hull and Swansea, and draws against Sunderland, Manchester United and Chelsea their start to 2017 has been nothing short of disastrous. It very much looks like the title is done and dusted and the remaining teams in the top 6 are just battling it out for Champions League places. The biggest fight is happening at the other end of the table, against relegation. Sunderland still prop up the other nineteen teams but with their resolute Scottish manager David Moyes, they are starting to look like a credible survivor. Anybody from Bournemouth down could realistically be relegated, even last year’s champions Leicester City.

The relegation odds presently cite Sunderland as favourites to go down at 4/11, with Hull next at 8/11 and surprisingly Crystal Palace as the third team at even money. Will it be the first time that Big Sam takes a team down into a lower division? Their thrashing at home by rock bottom Sunderland 0-4 stunned the Palace management in what was billed as a six pointer. Surely the champions of the 2015 / 2016 season could not be relegated? This has never happened before in the Premiership, and it is quite baffling the poor form of the Foxes this season. Trying desperately to break into Europe are Everton, Ronald Koeman’s side seem to have found new resilience and Romulu Lukaku is scoring for fun, the Toffee’s have won four out of their last five. Unfortunately for Everton, Manchester United have found form and are stubbornly not giving ground away. It would be ironic if Everton’s success was to Liverpool’s demise.
Europa League The Europa League enters the round of 32, and on the 16th February the first leg matches takes place, with the second leg taking place on the 23rd. The group winners were: Fenerbache, Apoel, St Etienne, Zenit, Roma, Genk, Ajax, Shakhtar Donetsk, Schalke, Fiorentina, Sparta Praha, and Osmanlispor. Surprisingly four teams that did not win their group are in the top five of the betting to win the trophy. Manchester United are currently the bookies favourites at 4/1, with Spurs second 8/1, then Roma, Shakhtar and Zenit. It is Manchester United’s current form that has rocketed them into the favourites position, finally Mourinho seems to have got the side working cohesively. Domestically and in Europe, Manchester United are now a formidable team. St-Etienne will not relish their round 32 tie against the Red Devils and the Manchester team is expected to go through comfortably.
having already been played Nigeria and Ivory Coast have started well. The Asian qualifiers are perhaps the toughest, only two groups exist comprising of six teams each. Already 5 group matches have been played and Iran and Korea top one group whilst Saudi Arabia and Japan lead the second. Unfortunately Thailand prop up Group B with only 1 point under their belt. The North and Central American qualifying group consists of 6 teams and with only 2 games played Costa Rica and Mexico top the group. Unbelievably USA has suffered two defeats and have no points so far.The South American qualifying has always been pretty much a bun fight with 10 teams battling it out for qualification and after 12 games Brazil lead the group having amassed 27 points. Uruguay and Ecuador are next with Argentina in 5th place a massive eight points behind Brazil. Finally the Oceania qualifying consists of two groups of three, New Zealand and Tahiti are top of their respective groups. The current favourites to win the 2018 World Cup are Germany closely followed by Brazil, Spain, Argentina and France. Surprisingly England are eighth favourites at 16/1, considering their dismal record in all tournaments since 1966 this is a generous price. There is a feast of football to provide plenty of entertainment between now and next year’s World Cup. There are also sure to be plenty of surprises along the way and some unexpected events -remember Leicester City ? - Claudio Ranieri certainly will !
2018 World Cup Qualifiers The world cup qualifiers are well on the way, with four games played in the European group fixtures some ominous teams lead their groups. France, Germany, England, Spain, and Belgium all top their leagues. There are five groups of four teams in the African qualifying group, with only 2 games

Germany v England - More Than A Game?
T
he English National Football Team will face the world champions Germany on Wednesday the 22nd of March 2017. The event will take place at the daunting home of Borussia Dortmund. This area of northern Germany is famous for its partisan support, and England will be walking into a bear pit to face their footballing arch enemies. This fixture comes four days before England’s 2018 World Cup qualifier against Lithuania at Wembley. The young England manager is two games into his four-match interim spell in control of the national team, but the trip to Germany might be the first for a newly appointed chief. The England v Germany fixture is one of the biggest sporting rivalries in the world, and is fueled by the tabloid press with their military metaphors. These Feet street hooligans would find more than enough drama, glory and pain on the field of play to render the comic-book xenophobia of two world wars and one world cup quite superfluous. The everlasting memory of Bobby Moore holding aloft the Jules Rimet trophy is treasured by every England fan, made all the more special by the gross mistake by the Russian linesman. German protests were vehement, and allegations of cheating only made the victory sweeter. Four years later in Mexico, there are tales too of conspiracies, which preceded Germany’s astonishing comeback in the 1970 World Cup. Then in 1982, England’s abject misery of going out of the competition undefeated. Roll on 1990 and 1996 as the hopes and euphoria of Lineker and Shearer gave way only to Gazza’s tears, Pearce’s pain and Southgate’s agony. Germany were reaping just deserts for their mistreatment back in 1966. The England v Germany fixture has thrown up more drama in the way that the games have been played and won, than their actual importance warranted. Even the biggest games between these giants of European football have had more significance than the results themselves. These fixtures have often proved to be catalysts for managerial changes and health checks of the nation’s footballing prowess. The shadow of 1966 seems to have become a curse which England has been laden with ever since, and perversely their old rivals Germany have reaped the rewards. Consequently the fixture has now become far more important to the English than the Germans. The real threat of European footballing dominance to Germany is not England at all, it is Italy. The rivalry reaches back far further than 1966, the two countries played their first full international in 1930. During the following decade England were to dominate the fixture, but then obviously WWII interrupted matters, and added even greater emphasis on subsequent games, the world now took notice of the feisty fixture. England versus Germany is always a fixture to look out for at any tournament but England should concentrate on how to beat their old rivals tactically and with better technique, rather than getting caught up in the tabloid hysteria.

PAGS Tournament from Phoenix Gold
W
ednesday 25 January saw the inaugural 2017 event of the PAGS with a great field of 172 golfers , including 18 Ladies. The Mountain & Lakes was the combination for the day , with the Tees well forward on numerous holes , which when combined with the implementation of the use of Handicap Index and daily Slope adjustments , resulted in some outstanding scores , particularly in the higher flights. The Ladies winner was Prasong O’Connor (18) who recorded an equal day’s best of 43 points, to be a couple clear of Yorying (32) on 41 points , who edged Jeeranan Duncan on countback 22/20.
The C flight for handicaps 21+ was another hotly contested affair with only 1 point covering the top 3. Leading the way home was Gary Jones (26) with a fine score of 43 points , while Barry Tregurtha (21) and Goort Gelten (26) needed to go to the countback , after both signed for 42 points. Barry getting the nod with his 22 points on the back 9 , to Goort’s 21. Kale Kalberg (20) made it a trio of winners with 43 points , with his win in the B flight for handicaps 15 – 20 , 1 clear of Kjell Franberg (20) on 42 , to go with his 2 approaches on 9 and 12. Ulf Bergstrom (20) was 3rd place getter with 39 points , to go with his Longest Putt on 5 , coincidentally all B flight placegetters playing off handicap 20. In the A flight there was again some tight competition , although the scores did not match the other flights. Bob Newell (10) got the top spot on countback to the last 3 holes , over Jeff Wylie (9) 8/5 , after both signed for a comparatively modest 38 points. Bob also getting an approach on 17 , while Craig Duncan (13) claimed 3rd place with his 37 points. The Low Gross went to Warren Wood (2) with his 78 , assisted by his approach winning eagle on 15. Other notables on the day were Steve Truelove with his 2 Long Drives in the 65+ age group , and Soorat with her Long Drive on 18 and Long Putt on 13. BIRA CIRCUIT CELEBRATES ITS THIRTIETH ANNIVERSARY P
attaya’s Bira International Circuit has just celebrated its thirtieth anniversary with a very special day that brought twoand four-wheel motorsport heritage together for real trip down memory lane. The event was originally planned for last October but was rescheduled at the last minute due to the national period of mourning.
Bira Circuit has an unshakeable place at the heart of the national sport and is quite simply known to everyone as the historic ‘home of Thai motorsport’. Situated just 15 km inland from the city its location means that Pattaya has always been at the hub of Thai circuit racing and the sport has grown a strong and enthusiastic local fanbase. When it was founded thirty years ago the circuit – which takes its name in honour of Thailand’s most famous racing driver, Prince Birabongse Bhanudej Bhanubandh – was the country’s first permanent circuit and brought the sport, which had thus far mainly played out on temporary airfield circuits, into a new age as well as ushering in rounds of highly prestigious international championships. Although relatively small and cramped by modern day standards Bira still holds its place as the spiritual home of the sport and countless legends have been born and nurtured on its tricky 2.4 kilometre length, which features 12 turns. Over the years we have seen some truly memorable races play out and stories have taken shape while the ghosts of past glories stalk every nook and cranny of the circuit. The special event, dubbed “The Good Old Days”, really reflected that lush heritage and allowed visitors to brush with the past as several machines that have been forgotten by time remerged to be admired. Toyota, which has always played an unshakeable role at the heart of Thai motorsport put on a display that reflected its own decades on the tracks here and several historic winning machines rubbed shoulders with its latest Super Car GTM ‘86’ sportscar (which was appropriately demonstrated by the brand’s number one star driver, Nattavude Charoensukhawatana, a legend in his own right) and of course the Altis sedan that has most recently chased glory on the other side of the world in the Nürburgring 24 Hour. Thailand Super Series, the key player in the sport today, joined the official celebrations by presenting a trio of racing machines that provide a great snapshot of this championship: a dazzling GT3 class Porsche 997 GT3-R which was ‘en

MOTOR TRADER route’ to race action in the Bangsaen Grand Prix, a new SEAT Léon TCR, which was competing in the inaugural season of TCR Thailand, and one of the Honda Jazz racecars that make up the fleet of capable ‘learner level’ machines used by the TSS Racing Academy (TRA). B-Quik Racing presented two of its stable of racecars, an Audi R8 LMS Cup and a Porsche 996 GT3 Cup, the latter which took selected guests for ‘hot lap’ runs on the track. Also undertaking ‘hot lap’ action was the big, green and very noisy ‘Australian V8’ Holden Commodore of New Zealander Craig Corliss. A day for reflection of a glorious past during an event that was enjoyed by everyone, especially the many cars clubs that came to join up with the celebrations and after their parade laps of the track they parked up all around the circuit as night fell, creating a very unusual and evocative sight. It was that sort of day; but the big question now, with thirty years successfully down, is what exactly the future holds for this much loved circuit.

Costs Costs and more Costs T
here is forever a debate in our industry about costs, whether it’s the cost of advice, the cost of products or the cost of investing. This is often manifested in several ways in the press through the discussion of whether in fact you need to take advice or in fact if a DIY approach is better. Alternatively, you may have read that active investing doesn’t work and low cost passive funds are best.I guess in all walks of life we come across situations where we need to think about costs. Living here in Thailand where the cost of living is very inexpensive, it makes me smile when some of my friends prefer to walk an extra three hundred meters to sit by themselves and save ten baht on a cup of coffee. I tend to prefer to spend a little bit extra and enjoy good company and surroundings. When it comes down to it, I suppose if I couldn’t afford the extra ten baht it may be a different story, however I can’t quite work out why some of my wealthiest friends still sit alone to save such a small amount. In finance and investing we often come across strange things, especially if you have been in the industry as long as I have. One of the most common issues is trying to persuade older clients that it is OK to spend money. What tends to happen is that they have been used to saving and scrimping for so long that it becomes impossible to become a bit more carefree with their savings.
be retiring just once, whereas I have dealt with clients retiring hundreds and hundreds of times. This knowledge helps them understand not only what they are going through today but also allows them to get an insight into what the future might bring. For example, we find that spending patterns are quite similar for retirees, the early years see the greatest expenditure which then trails off as they get older and perhaps travel less. Many clients tell me that the guidance and insights we provide are invaluable. Often when they have seen the results of giving their family some of their “inheritance” whilst still alive I receive letters of gratitude and thanks and not just from the children! You see, helping clients understand they can have financial security and that they can pass on some of their wealth can be very important. This saves on future taxes and allows parents and grandparents to see their family enjoy what they’ve worked all their lives to save. How do you put a price
Occasionally, we deal with clients who at one point in their lives had very little by way of savings or indeed cash. Their thought process is different, in that they fear going back to that point in their lives when they had nothing and tend to be very cautious as a result. This experience of many different situations only comes with time and I often tell clients that they might

on this advice ? Some will say it’s invaluable, yet you could read in the press that all you need to do is “google this” or “ask Siri that” to get advice. In my experience, good independent financial advice is the starting point to reaching good decisions and good overall outcomes in terms of finances. Independent advice means you are not paying too much for the products you purchase and this in turn leads to investing in funds that are suitable for your circumstances as well as good value. What point is there in free advice, cheap products and low cost investment if none of these things are suitable for your circumstances? And this is the key to why advice is not only important and worthwhile but rather why it’s essential in a lot of cases. I’ve often sat down with very bright, well educated people who are getting very small returns on their savings which their bank adviser has arranged by providing “guidance” ,whilst at the same time paying 20% per annum on store cards or other finance agreements. I remember one lawyer who proudly told me she had paid off her mortgage (saving 2.90% per annum) while making the minimum payment on a substantial credit card debt costing ten times that! Needless to say we reinstated the mortgage and binned the credit card saving thousands of pounds per annum and certainly much more than our advice cost. So don’t forget, take time to enjoy coffee with friends and remember cost isn’t everything! Comments as always to…. davethrifty@yahoo.com
