PATTAYA TRADER

Hi Readers Welcome Shamalama Ding Dong not just a song by Otis Day but now an original new eatery and marvellous place to hang out in Naklua - this edition’s Cover Story. We also check on our carbon footprints in this issue with many thanks to Green Pattaya for keeping us up to date with what they have been doing locally whilst also looking at what is happening globally in the world of sport where stadiums across the world are making efforts to be more Eco Friendly. You can also check out the benefits of using an electric bike or go diving with Matias and find out how you could help with project Kho Rin. Or if all this is rather too energetic for you then why not just do your bit for the oceans by refusing straws and unnecessary plastic bags from the likes of 7/11 and adding your name to a Facebook petition to stop them with Avaaz Org.. Then while looking at Facebook you could check out The Trader’s page and see that we’ve been out and about with the lovely Alice delivering our magazines across town. The team have also been busy attending the opening of the new Foodland at Royal Garden, taking a closer look at Pattaya International hospital and reviewing the SL Lounge and The Barn Steakhouse at Pattaya’s Sheep Farm. Our newest contributor Sharon: An American in Pattaya, tells how she became an accidental expat and Andy Harrison is our Pattaya Personality. By day a head teacher at St Andrews School and at the weekends an energetic champion of the sport of polo either through commentating or playing. Don’t forget if you happen to visit any of our featured places please tell them you found out about them in The Trader and if you have a new business that you would like us to report on write to me at pattayatrader@pattayatrader.com. All the best ! Gloria Assoc. Editor

THE THAI GARDEN RESORT CONTINUES TO BRING SMILES WITH THEIR TOY FOR JOY TRADITION

T

he Thai Garden Resort once again donated the collection from their ‘Toys for Joy’ project towards the children of the TungklomTalman School. The fund-raising took place at the hotel when all hotel guests were encouraged to make a donation. The “Toys for Joy” project organized by the Thai Garden Resort is already in its ninth year and is scheduled to be continued. The children receive items like shoes, socks, schoolbags and other school supplies, but also toys and sweets. The students of this school are mostly orphans or half-orphans and their families can only afford basic necessities, so a little help from the Thai Garden Resort is always welcome.

We have promised the children that we shall continue this program as long as we can and therefore we are committed to repeat this charity event for the 10th time again at the end of 2017 Mr. Becker of Thai Garden Resort welcomed a delegation from the Tungklom-Talman School at the resort to distribute the “Toys for Joy” donation to the children. Hotel Manager Danilo Becker also joined his team of employees of the Thai Garden Resort to distribute all gifts purchased with a total value of 60,000 baht from the donations made by the hotel’s management, team members and guests of the hotel.

TOP HOTEL PARTNER AWARD

T

he Thai Garden Resort received once again the “Top Hotel Partner 2016” award from Schauinsland Travel in Germany. The award certifies that the Thai Garden Resort is among the most popular hotels in the world featured by this Travel Agent. Schauinsland Travel was founded in 1918 in the German city of Duisburg, it is a midsized company and still operates as a family business. It is presently ranked as the 7th largest Travel Agency in Germany. This prize was awarded to the Thai Garden Resort for their loyalty, fairness and flexibility between both companies and also reflects the high response of positive hotel reviews by guests over the past year. Thai Garden would like to thank all of their guests and team members without whose support it would not be possible to be awarded such a prestigious award.

By Green Pattaya

Neo, the founder of Green Pattaya.

We Are Losing the Battle Against Plastic

It all started with a man running in the hills of Pattaya Thailand. While running, he noticed how much garbage had been dumped in clearings and in the green areas. When you drive car or motorbike you hardly have time to see all of it but when walking or running you become very aware. So in 2013, he decided to do something about it; he founded Green Pattaya as a Rotary Project and over 200 participants came to help with the very first cleanup effort! Since then, there have been 70 official cleanings with schools, companies, and different government agencies participating. The number of participants is constantly changing; sometime Neo cleans alone and sometimes there are hundreds of children helping him.

“It is very important to get all the plastic up from ground before the rainy season”, explains Neo.“Once the rain comes it will be all be flushed into the sea”.

Sadly for the environment, we are losing the battle against plastic. One can pick up garbage day in, and day out but if we don’t start banning plastic we will have oceans full of it and soon fish and other aquatic life will start to disappear. “Since Pattaya is a coastal town and many people come here for the seafood it is crucial to get the plastic cleaned up. Sea creatures eat the plastic, and we then eat them, and then it gets into our system. When you throw your trash away, you hardly think of how that plastic ends up being your dinner!” “It also sad to see the beaches filled with plastic after storms, what goes down must come up”, continues Neo. “I have been made painfully aware of that now with my daughter playing with old plastic cups and other things washed ashore. Some days when there are strong winds you cannot go in the water it so full of garbage - . It’s sad”.

What is Pattaya City Doing About the Issue? “People like to blame City Hall for everything, but they did not bring the plastic here. They also have no right to collect garbage on private land. This is where Green Pattaya steps in and does it for them. The” City” also doesn’t remove larger items of trash, out of fear of being sued. Hmm, maybe this 20 year old Jet Ski belongs to someone …?” says Neo, laughing. “It’s also not the city who collect the garbage, it’s private contractors. They only do it from the bin areas, so if you don’t put your rubbish next to the bin it won't get collected.” Green Pattaya has always had the City’s support and feel that they do what they can with the means that they have.

Reporting and How We Can Help “Green Pattaya do many things every day that people might not be aware of. For example the reporting of the light on the running trail in Big Buddha-- we alerted the city and now its working. We made them fix the pumps on Cosy beach, and Pratumnak soi 4. We just went to city hall, and told them to fix it and within days, the light that had been broken for years was fixed. “Sitting and complaining about stuff in a bar or on Facebook is not going to help. Tell us where, and explain the issue, and we might be able to get it fixedt” “It reminds me of our first cleaning. There was a man who wrote to Pattaya Mail and said he had been standing watching us for an hour and did not think we did a very good job. People are funny!”, continues Neo. “I learned that people even take offense by me cleaning”.

EXPAT LIVING

The Future of Green Pattaya

“We started a petition to stop 7/11 and others giving out straws. It’s about small steps. Everything is about money and not losing face in Thailand. But I hope before 2020 we will have a ban on plastic bags in Thailand. If I had more people donate to our cause, I would set up a research and recycling centre. There is so much breaking technology that Thailand could use, like turning styrofoam into oil, and they have even discovered that worms eat plastic. If we had the funds we would set up an education, recycling, and green tech centre”. You can sign the petition to stop the straws at: http://tiny.cc/xzxyjy

Green Pattaya after four good years is taking one step further towards its mission for a green and clean Thailand. Green Pattaya will in 2016/2017 become a Foundation registered in Thailand; this will help Green Pattaya to grow and Thailand to stay clean in ways not currently possible. Green Pattaya will have an office in central Pattaya where Green Pattaya can educate others and continue it's work for a greener and cleaner Thailand. We kindly ask you to look back at what we together with City Hall have achieved: such as Big Buddha Hill that is still not clear of rubbish even after 8 cleanings, the Pratumnak area which took 30 days to make clean and our countless cleanings on Cosy Beach restoring its original cleanliness and order. However all this costs money and even if Green Pattaya has never before asked you for help we hope in the future you will be able to donate from your heart. Thank you for your support during our 4 years of success; let’s make it even better! Also If you want to join an event, or get in contact with Green Pattaya they have a Facebook Page. where news of upcoming clean-up events is posted : https://www.facebook.com/GreenPattaya/events/

By Sharon E. B. White

THE ACCIDENTAL EXPAT I don’t know why the universe sent me to Pattaya. I mean I know why I came to Thailand but that is not the story I want to tell. -How did I become an Accidental Expatriate? It started in January 2007 as a threeweek tag along visit to Changzhou, China with my husband, toddler and 6-month-old baby. My husband sat in First Class, as was planned weeks before, whilst I sat in economy with the babies. As we know American Airlines do not have the best of reputations and they would not allow me to switch places to have a break from my wonderful offspring. My reason for tagging along was because the toddler and I sorely missed my husband on his bi monthly trips to China from Texas. So much so that my son would scream anytime he saw my husband’s computer bag by the backdoor. Before marrying I had been a flight attendant in the 1990s and had always lived in the United States but marrying a British man, I was open to the possibility of living in the UK and by the UK, I meant London. Eleven years down the line I am still an expat and not living in London but Asia. The three-week trip turned into seven and half years in Ningbo, China, a small city of four-ish million people -I loved Ningbo. Don’t get me wrong I had my “hitting the wall” moments such as when I slammed my fist on a policeman’s car after he nearly ran me over or when I asked yet another man to please refrain from smoking in the lift. But when my husband asked if I was open to moving to another Asian city I thought he meant Shanghai. Whilst we were discussing the possible move, my father suddenly passed away. Grief is a funny creature. I was able to make all the necessary arrangements; organize the funeral and deal with the messy financial aspects but afterwards, I had no energy for deciding which city we would move to. So I gave my partner carte blanche; he could decide the country, city, schools, and house - maybe not my finest decision. A friend of a friend who lived in Pattaya gave advice. Close to an international airport, international hospitals, choice of good schools and roughly an hour and half to Bangkok but what I think won my partner over was sunshine and the beach - he was ecstatic ! In less than a week, he had arranged the school, the house and plane tickets for three children, two dogs and myself to fly to Pattaya. Then the fun started. As an expat, I know how it feels to miss your home. I just didn’t think I would miss China but I did. I missed China horribly. I missed my job, my friends, my taxi rides, and even the silly smokers in the lifts. In the beginning I tried to like Pattaya but didn’t. I actually hated everything about it and only saw the negatives which is easy to do. But my children, my husband and especially my dogs, loved Pattaya. I wish I could say I quickly snapped out of it. I didn’t. I knew I was doing all the wrong things like staying at home instead of exploring the city. I even cried in front of a newly made expat friend. But little by little, the sun shine stopped being so overbearingly bright. I met a kind woman who drove me to an expatriate coffee gathering (really appreciate that Kylie) and life in Pattaya became slowly but surely, nicer and gentler. My first three years in Pattaya were painful growing years. I realized important things like I SHOULD always chose the house we live in. I learned not to be so hard on myself and I learned that I do need girlfriends. So my advice is if like me, you find yourself an accidental expatiate, be kind and embrace the bumpy, painful yet ultimately wonderful ride.

Andy Harrison is the Headteacher at St Andrews International School, Green Valley and has been so for the last twelve years. In teaching tenure this is quite exceptional, considering the average headteacher around the world is incumbent for just over two years. Originally hailing from the UK, Andy spent many years in Africa and Asia, his desire to become an educator fuelled by a goal to develop the student as a whole and not just in terms of academic achievement. This was the foundation stone of what he wished to see at St Andrews. Academic results are clearly an important passport but by themselves no guarantee of success in life. Andy believes it is the character that is developed within young people that allows this passport to be fully achieved. The international cultures that Andy has experienced, allow him to shape a truly global education and give the students the opportunities and experiences that will help them to succeed. Without doubt, Andy has instilled his positive methods and ideology into the very core of St Andrews and many students passing through the doors of the school have benefited greatly from his leadership. It is unusual for someone with all the responsibilities that come with such a position to have as varied and active social life as Andy. but family and sport have always been his relaxation and passion. He feels that Thailand, and this area in particular, is such an attractive location to be based - it is perfect for his whole family and offers many sporting opportunities. So with his competitive football and rugby days all but over, he is now focusing on tennis and getting his golf handicap into the lower single figures. Like many people of his age, fitness is something that has to be worked on, despite self confessed “creaking knees”, Andy enjoys riding his mountain bike and the route home from work takes him through spectacular rubber plantations, coconut groves and impressive sea views.

SCHOOL AND EDUCATION SPECIAL For those readers who love Horse Polo, Andy is a familiar figure. He can be seen at the local Thai Polo and Equestrian Club most weekends. Still active in playing the sport, due to the generosity of Harald Link and Nuntanee Tanner, Andy relishes the opportunity to umpire or commentate at the larger polo events during the year. He also feels that polo is a really captivating sport, combining a love of horses with skill and teamwork. “Hitting an object the size of a tennis ball on horseback, at speeds of up to 40km an hour takes some practice but is amazing when it all comes together”. This year Andy has played in four tournaments, including a game against the Malaysian National Team. He has also had the privilege of commentating on the ‘FIP World Cup Qualifier’ between Malaysia and New Zealand, as well as helping out with the large Charity fund raising events Pink Polo and Beach Polo in Hua Hin. When asking Andy if he were not involved in teaching, what he would do? His response is slightly puzzled as he has always wanted to teach, so has never really spent time dwelling on other options. After some deliberation his considered response is: “I guess I would really like to be involved in sports management or something else that involves working alongside people and helping them realise their potential.” He continues to enjoy and be excited about the developments at St Andrews Green Valley and living in Thailand generally and he does not even think about pastures new. “It would have to be something very special to drag me away from a job and place I cherish so much.” The three teaching passions Andy has are Outdoor Education, Information Technology and Physical Education. He feels these are subjects that are sometimes undervalued and can lead to real character development and skills needed for the future. Also, although he has enjoyed the four countries he has previously lived in, he believes that Thailand is a special place to be. The diverse culture and so many enriching opportunities to experience are second to none in a constantly evolving environment. He says :“It’s a country where people get on with their lives and enjoy what they have.” When finally asked how he would like to be remembered as a Teacher / Headteacher? Andy replies “I remember my favourite teacher for being the person who showed me what potential I had, how to use it and importantly to believe in myself. Therefore, if I can be remembered in the same light that would be fantastic. It’s not really important for me to be remembered as a Headteacher, I just see myself as a teacher with a few extra roles to perform.” Without doubt Andy is a dedicated and motivated individual both in his teaching activities and leisure pursuits. It is refreshing and reassuring that such a person should be at the helm of an institution for the development and education of young minds - I’m sure all the staff, students and parents of the St Andrews community will agree.

Go Green Drink the Local Wines 2013 (B960) Described as “Full bodied with an aromatic nose of red berries, cassis, red gummi bears and distinctive black pepper. The palate shows arrays of red berries, dark cherries and lifted floral notes, vanilla and freshly cracked pepper with great acid backbone… smooth with full yet velvety tannins.” It smells very sweet but tastes the complete opposite as there’s a touch of sourness. However you could turn up to a dinner party with this and not be too embarrassed.

S

o in this issue of the Trader while we are considering our carbon footprints maybe now is the time to think of the ecological as well as economic cost of the wine we drink. Thailand is going from strength to strength with its offerings of locally produced wines. Here is a selection of some of the best on offer.

Village Farm Chateau des Brumes Le Prestige (80% Shiraz, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon) 2013 (B1,900) Village Farm say this is a wine that has “The complex aroma of wild flowers and layers of forest berry flavors with the rich characters of blackberry, violet and subtle spice that are slowly and pleasantly released over time”. It has also been described as being like no other Thai wine as it is so well-balanced, lacking any acidic kick and with a smoky depth. The vineyard owner Viravat Cholvanich’s claims it’s made with 100-percent Thai grapes. However at almost B2,000 it competes with heavyweight Italian and French offers. Monsoon Valley Shiraz 2014 (B1,200)

Monsoon Valley one of the biggest vineyards in Thailand (and the company responsible for Spy Wine Coolers Siam Winery ), say this wine has “Sweet n otes of dark plum and cherries, and chocolate aromas supported by subtle spices and toasty oak. Medium body in style with juicy texture complemented by fine grain tannin and an enticing fruit flavor profile.” It is very light—sort of like rose and just slightly sweet.

Issara Estates Khao Yai Shiraz 2012 (B1,350)

“Driven by the complexities of black fruits, red berries, raisins and tobacco. This wine exhibits hints of pepper, roasted coconuts and complemented with mild wood smoke finish from the barrel segment.” This wine is the sweetest out of the lot. Issara Estates is actually a real estate project whose key selling point is that it overlooks a vineyard so you might say that this wine is more of a marketing gimmick than something to be put on the dinner table.

PB Valley Khao Yai Reserve Shiraz 2012 (B790)

“Intense aromas of hay, plum with a hint of smoke. The palate is bold and medium bodied with refreshing natural acidity. Lovely savory licorice comes through as well as some fruits.” PB Valley is Khao Yai’s largest vineyard and this wine has a strong, slightly metallic aftertaste matched by what feels like a high alcohol content. However it is the cheapest bottle in the listing. Not too dissimilar to the Issara Estates’ wine being sharp and also quite jammy but is almost B600 less.

GranMonte Heritage Syrah Viognier (95% Shiraz, 5% Viognier)

The Barn Steak House

team all agreed, were the divine perfectly grilled lamb chops which arrived complete with a heddy aroma of the accompanying mint sauce, served in a shot glass. The outside chargrilled flavour perfectly complemented the soft, pink, luscious flesh that fell away from the bone and left a sweet delicate flavour on the lips.

The presentation at The Barn is quite simply stunning, better than you would see in most fine dining restaurants but with prices closer to that of a burger bar. The service is also perfect, with the well trained staff attentive but not overly so.The Barn also offers a good selection of fish dishes, a full range of pastas and a delicious kids menu with many favourites such as chicken fingers, fish & chips and spaghetti. If you can manage to tackle a dessert then delights like creme brulee, panna cotta and banana & apple spring rolls are all available to choose from.

T

oday we venture out to Pattaya Sheep Farm and visit the wonderful Barn Steak House Restaurant. The first thing that holds your attention is the venue as it is quite unique in Pattaya and certainly very charismatic. It is an imposing double height replica of an American Western-Style Barn, with an impressive double glass frontage overlooking a massive wooden decked outdoor area. Your choice of al fresco dining or sitting in the modern air conditioned interior is totally up to you. Once inside you are ushered to a rustic table by the welcoming staff with a smile and a hearty greeting. The bare concrete walls add to the modernistic but homely atmosphere which is bright and airy.

A fully stocked bar and wine available by the glass makes the whole dining experience at The Barn complete. If this restaurant was in central Pattaya it would be fully booked every night, as it is The Barn is definitely worth the twenty minutes drive from the city.

Iced glasses of water are proffered whilst menus are handed out. It is worth noticing that The Barn has a kids eat free policy if the child is under 110cm - that is providing an accompanying adult selects from the main meal options. The clever design of the menu sees a mixture of flame grilled fare as you would expect from a steakhouse, with a careful selection of dishes to suit most palates. Amongst the appertisers are mexican quesadillas, tortilla wrapped smoked chicken and vegetables served with a sour sauce. Cheese spring rolls, deep fried complete with a lettuce salad and a thousand dressing are also highly tempting. For a healthier option there are salads fresh, crisp and delicious including the wonderful smoked duck breast salad and the hearty ham and cheese salad served with mixed diced vegetables, cheddar cheese, mozzarella cheese, ham and a choice of dressings. If you are popping in around lunchtime you can take full advantage of the juicy burgers and bulging sandwiches, all extraordinary value for money. The chicken satay burger is an unusual but tasty offering, the delicate chicken breast is first marinated in spices before flame grilling then served with a peanut sauce and fries. Also the lamb burger is a big favourite, made with a homemade patty and served with fries. A place that advertises itself as a steakhouse should offer a decent steak, The Ranch exceeds in this department. All the beef is imported from Australia and cooked to perfection. There is sirloin, rib-eye, T-bone, and tenderloins - all succulent and mouth watering. For this quality of meat, the prices are hard to believe. The steaks are all served with baby carrots, spicy wedged potatoes and a slightly spicy black pepper sauce. The highlight of the main meals menu, as the Pattaya Trader

Go Green & Root For Your Team!!

I

n keeping with the “environment” theme of this month's Pattaya Trader magazine we wanted to cover a handful of sporting stadiums that have taken the decision to go green. As recently we have seen a wide range of sporting venues think more about their impact on the environment, so here are our top picks….

Morro da Mineira, Rio, Brazil Opened in 2014 by Pelé, the football pitch serves as many as 200,000 local residents in nearby Favelas.Where this venue comes into it’s own is that underneath the turf there are over 200 kinetic tiles. Player's movements are turned into energy to power the stadium bulbs. It certainly isn’t the biggest arena, but nonetheless is worthy of a mention. Put simply, the more the players run around the more the floodlights work. Perhaps not the ideal setting for some players, but you certainly get out what you put in!

NASCAR’s Pocono Raceway, Pennsylvania, USA Host to NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is a 2.5 mile-long raceway in Long Pond. A 3MW solar farm produces sufficient power to not only power the race venue, but also to power the local grid for 1,000 nearby residents. The farm is spread across 25 acres and produces 3-4 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of power. Some 40,000 PV modules produce enough energy to offset over 3,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide each and every year.It is believed that the net production of the solar farm will exceed 72 Million kWh by 2030.

Estádio Mineirão, Brazil The stadium dates back to a time when there was perhaps, much less concern for the environment, 1956 to be more precise. However, in 2013 in preparation for the upcoming World Cup the Estadio Mineirao was equipped with a solar-powered roof. Also rather than just feeding the stadium itself, the 1.4MW solar roof provides more than enough juice to satisfy the needs of around 900 homes per year.

The New Lawn Stadium, Gloucestershire, UK It won’t win awards for being the largest stadium around; however, the 5,032 capacity home of English non-league side Forest Green Rovers are in the Champions League when it comes to being eco friendly! Built in 2006 the stadium cost around £3.5 Million to build, which without question represented a huge investment for a non-league football team.An organic pitch (a world’s first) is kept neat and tidy with a solar-powered robotic mower. If that wasn't enough, on top of that, the rainwater is recycled.

FedEx Field, Maryland, USA

The largest venue in the NFL is home to the Washington Redskins “football” team and boasts a capacity of 85,000 seats. Opened in 1997, the FedEx Field was renovated in 2012 with the addition of 8,000 solar panels. The onsite solar PV system is capable of producing 2MW of capacity, in real terms this is around two and a half times the power consumed during regular seasons games ! 7,600 of the panels are located in the parking area, with the remainder situated over the stadiums ramp structure, helping to create a highly efficient energy centre.

The Amsterdam Arena, Amsterdam, Holland The largest stadium in Holland see’s the Dutch National team and Ajax play their home games, with a capacity of over 53,000.One of it’s most impressive claims to fame is that it is “net climate-neutral”. In real terms this is achieved by a whopping 4,200 solar panels in the stadium’s roof area. Rainwater is also reused for keeping the pitch in tip-top condition whilst cooling is assisted by cold water supplied from a nearby lake.In true Dutch efficiency wind turbines are located strategically around the stadium. In a twist to the normal plastic seating, the futuristic furniture is actually made from sugarcane, offering some of the sweetest views in all of Dutch football!

National Solar Stadium, Taiwan At the time of building, the multipurpose stadium featured the largest solar panel roof in the world! The Japanese designed stadium is shaped somewhat like a dragon, with semi-spirals setting it apart from many other stadiums and opened in 2009 it was the first in the world to provide power using solar technology. Panels cover the external space of the stadium and provide power for it’s own operation, alongside energy that can be returned to the local grid. The stadium itself only covers 13% of the total ground area, with the remainder being put to good use for ecological ponds and natural habitat reservations. After the match, visitors can take a leisurely stroll around the park areas.

Estádio Nacional Mané, Garrincha, Brazil Brazil’s national capital stadium incorporates a gigantic solar-panel system around the perimeter of its roof. If you aren’t familiar in electrical lingo 1 megawatt is generally enough to power over 300 homes. So the 25 Million megawatts that are generated help to make a huge dent in the energy budget of the stadium. To complement the energy efficient roof area the stadium also has the ability to capture and reuse rainwater for irrigation purposes. Being eco friendly and energy efficient is not just the preserve of large stadiums such as these, you too can play your part in becoming more energy efficient. Think about your own carbon footprint and what can be done on a local level with solar and other renewable energy forms!!

The Eco (Highlander)

Warrior … Go Go “Ma” I sometimes wonder why I ever got into fishing... I have won many competitions in my fishing career in team coarse fishing and a few for fly fishing but I suppose I will always have the memory of my first fish:Sitting on the banks of the Clyde just below Lanark and the big Lanark Hill, I was setup with rod and float tackle with a worm by my Dad. I waited and waited… then all of a sudden my float bobbed and then disappeared. Then as I lifted my rod, with the adrenalin pump my wellington boots gave way on the muddy bank. It was Boxing Day on a frosty morning so when I hit the flowing river my heart nearly stopped with the sharp hit of icy water. I grabbed for the roots on the grassy bank and managed to hold on until my big brother Charles pulled me out. Still holding on to the green fibre glass rod with a Mitchell 300 series reel, my concern was “what had I caught ….?” It was a 6oz Perch. The bank became a hive of activity as my Dad’s footballing friends all grabbed me and stripped me to the bone. Then wrapped me in a mish-mash of different clothes, with the biggest pair of chest waders known to man… I must have looked a picture! Busby, Shankley, Millar and Delaney with a helping of Charlie Tully's socks would literally be worth a fortune at auction today but all I remember is the Perch (My 1st Fish) …The Fire and the laughter of the whisky warmed boys from Kelly’s bar telling me they had saved my life to play football for Mossend Boys Guild. My mother was never told of the experience until many years later when I travelled from Belfast to my father’s funeral. Now there was a famous day out and a wake to make my Dad proud. As I stood by the fire the squad caught some big river pike and chased me around telling me “the teeth would bite my arse”….great memories and the start of my love of fishing. However that’s not the only reason I fell in love with fishing. In my later years as a professional soldier I went fishing in many countries either as dawn broke or late into the night. My love for nature and in particular lake life at different times of the day, intrigued me. There is nothing better than travelling to a lake before dawn and setting up your rod in the dark under torch light. The excitement and noise of feeding fish slurping flies from the surface or fighting with bigger fish for nose dug snails and worms, always left me with the expectation of a big bag of fish. When your eyes have just got accustomed to the dark, the sun starts to rise and the daylight slowly comes towards you. I remember fishing a canal in Co Meath Southern Ireland through the night with the clearest of skies and very little light pollution. I saw a fast moving satellite travelling through the stars and with the rustling of the reeds from the far bank, a host of different animals’ eyes glistening in the dark at me. That is living ! It leaves you with the feeling of being somewhere special and as the years have passed I turn stones in the lakes or rivers to catch nymphs and hatching flies in a jar. I then take them home to tie flies that resemble them and take the artificial flies to the spot where I got the live ones to present them on a line… No better feeling than catching on a homemade fly. But the real love, that fishing has given me is an understanding of the eco structure of the fish, plant life and lakes. I suppose I should have done an MBA in Botany but that would have bored the knickers of me.

So it is no surprise that I love the Thai people and the way they take and give back to keep a cycle of life within their eco infrastructure and keep their water ways alive and kicking. I found a lake 10 minutes away from my condo in Jomtien where I have a brilliant time fishing with my two new Thai friends. They are top class anglers, don’t speak a word of English (or Scottish 5555) love the spam sandwiches I make and the ice cold Leo I bring to the bank and it is there when I look around on each side of the lake that what I see humbles me.

For example the last time I was there the first thing to catch my eye was the appearance of a whole family heading towards the shade of a tree. Imagine my surprise when the “Ma” sat the family down and started to teach one of the younger boys to fish with a big stick with line attached. No doubt with a sharp hook and a piece of chicken skin as well… Ciggie in the mouth she embarrassed me by regularly pulling in pounders of Banin (Perch Like fish) and Tapian (Roach like silver fish). There was me with carbon fibre ledger rod and a Shimano Bait runner catching only tiddlers. I just sat for an hour watching “Ma” prebait and cover the triangle (Killing zone Far Front, Inside Right and Left)... Then after 15 minutes pull in her family dinner… I thought to myself a lake would never be able to sustain the volume of Thai families fishing 7 days a week . Yet as I checked the water in front of me it was laden with minnows (A sure sign of an eco-friendly well stocked lake).. But how was this...was there a special fish viagra dropped in the water? My question was soon answered when a couple of motorbike taxis arrived carrying women and kids laden with plastic bags. They moved to my right where I thought they were about to start fishing. Imagine my surprise when they began to say prayers and then empty the contents of their plastic bags, full of small fish, eels and frogs into the lake. No wonder this lake was as clear as any UK & NI environmental lake or river back home. My admiration for the Thai people who make these pilgrimages is endless. They not only take from the lake to sustain their families’ lives with food but replenish what they take out…. Darwin would be proud of this country and the environmental values they hold. I know why I love fishing… It’s the people, the special experiences, the fresh air, the peace of the day that allows you to meditate and the excitement of catching the unknown…. Hey… You want to see the one that got away 555555… That’s my gift back to the lake and my part of being ECO FRIENDLY.

O

ne of the great attractions of Vientiane is that there are no great attractions. The Lao capital serenely lacks the “must-see-must-do” icons that cities these days feel increasingly obliged to boast about. To be fair though Vientiane has a large and important Buddhist temple, Pha That Luang — the Great Sacred Stupa — that dates back to 1566. It sprawls rather than soars and it isn’t burdened by being higher, holier or older than the World Heritage wonders found elsewhere in this region. Years ago, on my first visit to another Vientiane wat, the graceful Ho Phakeo temple, a guide told me that this had been home to Bangkok’s famed Emerald Buddha until a Siamese army carried it off in 1779. "We don't we ask for it back," he explained, "because the Thais have only “the thing”. The real Emerald Buddha is still here, inside us." Touché, Siam.

Vientiane is pronounced “Viang-chan”, not the phonetic Franglaise mangle, “Vee-enty-ahn” and has been the Lao capital for 454 years. Its population is around 750,000 people and almost nothing is mandatory except to hang loose, eat well and wander. Most visitors take a look at, if not climb, the Patouxai Gate, an ornate archway that straddles the central Lane Xian Avenue. One of its two nicknames is the “Asian Arc de Triomphe”.The 160 steps to the top are easy enough but in the humidity, a shirt drencher. The view is worth the sweat. You can scan the city horizon, counting its skyscrapers on one hand. Below is the broad, Paris-inspired Lane Xian boulevard, playing Champs Elysee to Patouxai’s Arc de Triomphe. Built between 1957 and 1968 (yet never quite completed) the arch is dedicated to the Lao soldiers who died fighting for France in World War II and soon after, against France in their struggle for independence. The local legend is that the cement used in it was intended for the US-funded Vientiane airport. Instead, much was diverted to the Patouxai Gate — and thus, its other nickname, “the vertical runway”.

TRAVEL & ATTRACTIONS

To get around town I hire a bicycle. Vientiane is compact, its traffic hour jams are slo mo) and — the clincher for lazy cyclists like me — there the steam-iron humidity, from hotel or café to museum or monument, I often skip the sights and have another cool drink — you know you want to.

ambles (even the peak are no hills. Pedaling in find temptation looming:

I push on and hit the National Museum where the Lao people get to tell their tale. There are displays of “how-we-kicked-theFrench-derriere”. (Laos’s colonisers from 1893 to 1954, the French are depicted as slavers with bullwhips.) The American “imperialists and their puppet soldiers”, too, are shown the door. The propaganda is leavened by giant drums, tribal costumes, ceramics and ancient manuscripts, and lightened by a photo of that obscure 1960s US leader, President John Sen. Meanwhile, the People’s Army Museum goes one better with the captions on its old photographs spelling out character assessments of various national enemies: the French, predictably, were “colonialists”, the Japanese “fascists” and the Americans “imperialists” but the neighbouring Thais were inventively slagged-off as “extremely rightists”. I pedal across town to the Mekong shore but its actual flow, at least in dry season, is almost half a kilometre distant across river flats. (Gone are the old makeshift bars, seemingly built from driftwood, that sat right beside the river until the large dams built upstream reduced the flow.) A wide promenade runs along the raised bank and features a thronged night-market that is full of ethnic clobber and same-same souvenir tat. It’s dinner time so I stroll further along the bank’s Quai Fa Ngoum and settle for the Spirit House restaurant where steamed tilapia fish in chili, garlic and lime sauce, plus salad, a fair cocktail, good service and no plus-plus surcharges all come to less than 400 baht. Vientiane isn’t an insomniac city with its nightlife on speed-dial. Going out here is more about enjoying food and company. Khop Chai Deu (which is Lao for “thank you”) attracts locals, expats and tourists alike, and is the most popular bar-restaurantbeer garden in town. Located in an old villa on Setthathirath Road near Nam Phou fountain (the unofficial centre of town), Khop Chai Deu is as good for a pit-stop (cold beer and fresh, spicy spring rolls) as for a dress-up, sit-down meal. Monty Python-style jokes about the colonial French might still get a run in Vientiane, along the lines of “What did the French ever do for us?” The answer includes boulevards, boulangeries, coffee and libraries. They also left a taste for dining well and when the dry-rot decades of Cold War faux socialists were over, the chefs came out to wok again. There are plenty of French restaurants here. If you’re just in the mood to relax, then try bars like the Samlo Pub on Rue Setthathirath or the Billabong on Rue Chao Anou. The Mekong’s liquid highway separates Vientiane from Thailand, visible on the opposite shore, but there seem to be no river sightseeing trips on offer. It’s that sort of take-it-or-leave-it town, a laid-back enigma, a national capital with all the urgency of a country town. Good reason to hop over soon from Thailand and enjoy it before a bunch of man-bun types “discover” the place, double the prices and announce how hip it all is.

PAGS Tournament from Phoenix Gold

Hot Day , Hot Rounds

88 players, including a good field of 14 ladies, made the short journey to the Phoenix course, where we played the Mountain & Ocean combination. Although the weather was hot & humid, there was a light breeze to keep it from being too oppressive, with the groups progressing at a steady pace. We played from the white tee markers today, with some being back, while others were a little forward, but still the course provided a solid challenge for all, while still ensuring the integrity of the daily handicap adjustments. Most months there is 1, or sometimes several outstanding performances for the tournament. This month that mention should probably go to Fynn Csizmadia (10) in the A flight Mens & May Suiye (17) in the Ladies. Fynn winning the Low Gross with 78, 2nd in the A Flight & a technical prize, while May shot the day’s best score to win the Ladies & got the Long Drive. Regular player Heikki Viljakainen (21) was the highest scoring male golfer with 43 points on the day, leading the C grade home by a clear 5 points from Kjell Franberg (22) with 38 points while another point back was Ronny Walfridsson (30) on 37 points. The B flight, for handicaps 15 - 19, was a little more tightly contested, with Philippe Pruvot (18) the clear winner on 41 points, while Martin Kempton (15) recorded 38 points to get 2nd spot, a point ahead of Alan Gallagher (18) on 37 points, to go with his Long Drive on 18. The A flight (0 – 14) was the tightest of the day, with Daniel Grob (13) the winner with 41 points, while the 2nd spot went to the afore mentioned Fynn Csizmadia with 40 points, 3rd spot on 39 points went to Johan Smedsjo (14). Special mentions go out to multiple winners in the technical prizes, getting their maximum 2 prizes, among others, were Jerry Langer & Pekka Saarenpaa. BBQ King Dave was at it again, who with his capable staff kept all attendees well satisfied with their tasty offerings for the night.

It took a bit longer to arrive this time, in fact it was rescheduled from its original date last November, but the 10th Anniversary edition of the Bangsaen Grand Prix lived up to all the promise and the Pattaya race fans that made the short trek up the highway to Chonburi to see the action unfolding were treated to a superb motorsport spectacle.Super Car GTM headlined Thailand Super Series’ beachside racing extravaganza and the big beasts didn’t disappoint one bit as all three races (there was a ‘triple header’ squeezed in) provided non-stop bumper-to-bumper racing, plenty of passing and lots of dramas, thrills and spills right from when the lights turned green to when the chequered flags waved. At the front it was all about one man – Darryl O’Young. The highly experienced Hong Kong driver came into this year’s event with five poles and five wins from the last five races here (two in 2014 and three in 2015) to his name with the aim to racking that tally up to eight poles and eight wins and extend his record run. No easy task as for the third year in a row he was driving a Porsche 997 GT3 Cup, a now veteran racecar that no longer squeezes its way onto the Super Car GTM overall podiums; in fact, no PRO-AM class drivers choose the ‘997’ anymore in their quests for glory. During qualifying Darryl cleaned up to start the weekend with the record of eight pole positions already locked down. And then from a hot and dry Friday afternoon through to an equally hot and dry Sunday afternoon, Darryl quite simply hogged the top step of the podium in all three races to make it eight wins in a row, a record that has never been seen before in the decade long history of the event. He did have a little luck in the first race however after an incident unsighted race leading Saran Sereethoranakul in the Lamborghini Huracán LP620 Super Trofeo who had burst into the lead at the start after the polesitter was caught out at the green lights but the Hong Kong driver was able to capitalise on that mid race drama to retake a lead he wouldn’t relinquish. During final two races though he controlled the pace from the front to make it three out of three. Not only all that, but with the removal of the temporary chicane for this year along with further track widening and remodelling work, the Bangsaen Street Circuit got even quicker and Darryl posted a new record in qualifying – a staggering lap in 1:36.867 – to become the fastest man to ever go around Bangsaen.

Sarun’s second place in the first race – and the maximum championship points it brought with it – put the 2016 Super Car GTM Drivers’ title to bed and the Lamborghini driver emerged on Friday evening as a richly deserved champion having not put a foot wrong all season. Another Thai racing titan has been confirmed and certainly expect his career to continue on an upward trajectory – he will start as the favourite for the 2017 championship. Meanwhile Paul Kanjanapas claimed the inaugural Super Car GTM Amateur (AM) class title after three polished races where he careful managed his points advantage coming into the weekend, applied the pressure and tussled with his teammate Naputt Assakul through the trio of races, the latter being rewarded by bagging the runners up spot. Thamrong Mahadumrongkul won all three AM races and not just that feat, he mixed it in with the PRO-AM runners, a superb performance from the Ferrari driver who had a great weekend.

But that wasn’t all sandwiched in between the GT3 and GTC action playing out on the street circuit there was some real unmissable thunder as the ‘TA2’ Ford Mustang ripped up the track on its debut in Thailand. The big American racecar was being demonstrated by TransAm driver Shane Lewis and apart from its striking shape its equally striking bright metallic blue finish meant no one could miss it pounding the circuit. That concluded the top of the bill action at the ‘Bangsaen Grand Prix 2016’ – the event delayed from last November. For the ‘2017 edition’ the organisers’ are uprooting it from its traditional end of the year date and moving the extravaganza to July. That means there are now less than three months remaining until the ‘Grand Prix’ spectacle returns to Bangsaen and once again Pattaya race fans will be able to make the 50km trip north to watch another instalment of the biggest and most exciting motorsport event in Thailand.

The occasion of the 10th Anniversary was the perfect time to put the big racing beasts back onto the schedule and Lamborghini vs Camaro vs McLaren was a great tonic for the fans. In a weekend of headline acts, the GT3 cars stood out as their engines reverberated around the streets. Then to the final Super Car ‘act’, GTC, which enjoyed a fairytale in Saturday’s first race as the Porsche’s Cayman, making its racing debut in Thailand with a driver, Charvanin Bunditkitsada, who was also appearing in Super Car for the first time, promptly went and won. Sunday’s second race saw ‘normal service’ resumed as the KTM X-Bow GT4, which has dominated the category all season long, wrapped things up with one more victory thanks to the efforts of Jack Lemvard.

Dive Tribe fights for our coral reefs and you can help The cost of the entire trip is 1600 THB, this money is used to pay for all the materials, gas and logistics to get to the island and create the coral nurseries. We will provide the air for the dive as well as the transportation. Our high-speed boat leaves from Ocean Marina, when I say “speed boat” I'm not exaggerating either, we will be at Kho Rin within 20 minutes !

Get specialized training in coral conservation

If you have been following the news over the past few years you will know that coral reefs worldwide are dying. Coral bleaching is a phenomenon that is happening all around the world at a speed never seen before, Pattaya has not been spared either. Luckily for us, Dive Tribe a conservation organisation has been making great efforts to try and protect, restore and repopulate the reefs in and around the Pattaya area.

The best thing about the project (apart from the fact we are actively helping the reefs recover) is that you will get firsthand experience in the world of marine conservation. Universities and schools from Bangkok often send their students to work with us, so if you are a marine biologist or scuba diving professional looking for a specialization in conservation, this is a great opportunity to learn by doing, while working with some of the best professionals in the field: How to build coral nurseries & artificial reefs, maintain "Biorock" artificial reefs, look after Giant Clam nurseries, coral spawning studies and culturing programs, mooring line maintenance and installation and much more.

How can you help if you don't dive? As we mentioned before, for the time being, we are only taking certified divers as participants, we are hoping to change this in the following months. For now, here's what you can do to help us out: • Follow Project Kho Rin on Facebook and share the project! Since we are a community-based project it’s very important for us that Pattaya residents hear about us. In these modern, social-media driven days there's no better way of getting known than people learning about Project Kho Rin on your Facebook wall, so please share the message! Project Kho Rin is a community-based project aimed at restoring some of our local coral reefs and work has already started at Kho Rin island, a small tropical paradise located 1 hour, 40 minutes from Pattaya. Our coral nursery has been growing healthily for the past 6 months and we are always looking for new volunteers to come help us continue the good work.

Who is Dive Tribe? Dive Tribe is all about marine conservation and imparting this knowledge back to the public thereby giving a greater understanding of how important our reefs and coral seas are in Asia. They have been working to protect reefs in Thailand for over a decade, and when it comes to marine conservation in South East Asia, they are definitely at the top of their game having worked with numerous universities and research establishments including SHEDD in Chicago, and shark research with Tasmania University. Dive Tribe were also winners in 2013 of the coveted Sea Hero Award sponsored by Oris timepieces and Scuba Diver Magazine.

• Learn to dive and join us! Take this good piece of advice, if you have never scuba dived in your life I urge you to go out there and do it! If you live in Pattaya you have access to very cheap scuba diving certifications. If you don't have an idea where to get a good deal and a good instructor, get in contact with Dive Tribe and they will point you in the right direction.

Dive Tribe:

• divetribe.weebly.com/ • www.facebook.com/Thedivetribe • Gwyn Mills CEO & Organizer: 0870 161070

Are you a diver? Here's how you can collaborate

Sadly this is not a project open to everybody, to participate you must be a certified scuba diver having completed your advanced open water course. Furthermore, you will also have to bring your own equipment (or let us know beforehand so we can arrange to rent it for you). However if you are a diver and want to join our effort all you have to do is get in contact with us at our Facebook page and we'll let you know when we are heading to Kho Rin next. It’s really that simple!

NEITHER a Borrower Nor A Lender Be " Neither a borrower nor a lender be; For loan oft loses both itself and friend, And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry. This above all: to thine own self be true, " Polonius to his son Laertes in Act 1 Scene 3 of Hamlet by William Shakespeare When an idea has been around as long as this one you must wonder if there is some truth in it because times have changed a lot since then - so should we take any notice of this philosophy now? It completely goes against the modern way of thinking and few people still live by its mantra although many would consider the moral of what Shakespeare said to still ring true when related to loans from and to individuals. However, there are thousands of reputable companies to whom you will be safe to lend money and you will be able to get it all back when you wish: subject to the small print Terms & Conditions, of course.

them and quite a few who are uncomfortable with their debts and whose lives have been significantly changed because of them. Very few will breeze through life without suffering from debt and it is just as likely to be well paid people who suffer as the poor. If you allow debt to become a significant part of your financial life you are leaving yourself wide open should you suddenly suffer a change in circumstances. Or if, for example there is a sudden interest rate rise, you might find any additional income from overtime work reduced or maybe that earnings from a part time job have completely disappeared. The greatest risk for most people is that of redundancy or ill health causing them to lose their job or having medical bills to pay. Could you still keep up the payments without your monthly income? Most people couldn't.

You may be comfortable helping a friend, for instance financing the lease of a bar in Pattaya Walking Street or indeed lending for something a little more stable such as the opening of a new health center. Or you may want to run a mile away from such projects. Many of us would feel obliged to try and help a friend in trouble but where does it start and end?

Debt doesn't just "dull the edge of husbandry", it can and does destroy people's lives. Perhaps only one in 100 but if you turn out to be that one then you'll agree it's one too many. For within the “100 people there will be several who are severely affected by their debts and several more who struggle with

For expatriates living in Thailand on a fixed income one of the biggest precursors of debt could well be currency appreciation. Over the past two or three years the appreciation of the baht has caused many Farangs, to either get into debt or dramatically reduce their lifestyle. It would be interesting to know how many have returned home?

We all live like nothing is going to change but change is inevitable. It's one of nature's irrefutable laws. You may never get sick and I hope your job will continue as long as you want it to but it is risky planning your life based on these assumptions. By living on continuous credit you are quite literally, betting the house that you will always be able to afford your debt. I hope it proves to be a safe bet but it would be wise to reduce your debts so that you could survive any difficult periods in your life. For expatriates on a small pension, probably not indexed, who have a relatively small investments of say between 50,000 and 100,000 sterling the key is capital protection and growth, especially if you are using this to supplement your income. A dramatic fall in the markets can seriously affect your income so you should try and find something more reliable than equity markets. Many have invested all their money in property and now find they can’t rent out their houses. All your eggs in one basket comes to mind. For as Shakespeare says in Act 2 Scene 7 of another of his plays “As You Like It” All the world's a stage, And all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances; And one man in his time plays many parts, - Make sure you are prepared. Keep your credit cards & loans low and you can cope when things change David.thrifty@yahoo.com
