P R I ORITIZ I N G HEA LT H A N D S A FE TY W I T H STORAG E COVID-19 is changing modern culture. The work and learning environments need to be looked at through a new lens. Storage too. Re-purposing your space during a pandemic isn’t easy, but storage solutions can also support social distancing, cleanliness and peace of mind at work. Any storage project must now take into account the new realities we are facing. Here are a few examples of how storage solutions can help in the midst of COVID. + High-density mobile storage — reduces storage footprint and frees up space for social distancing + Touch-less lockers — open with a mobile app or RFID scan to reduce contact — and provide useful data for targeted, more cost-effective cleaning + Movable or temporary locker walls — limit access or create safe zones + Off-site high-density storage — create more on-site space for distancing and help limit touch-points
There is also more to consider than just the storage system itself. For example, most storage systems offer multiple surfaces to choose from – including antibacterial and antimicrobial finishes. Also, the placement of the system you choose can significantly impact workflow and productivity – especially with the new reality of personal spacing. Bottom line – if you are planning a storage project during COVID, make sure to add “new reality” impact to your list of considerations.

Relocating to a new space is exciting. You’re working with architects/planners to build out a new environment that meets all of your storage needs. You can enjoy the freedom to imagine “what if?” You may be planning to bring your old storage systems, but you want to integrate them with fresh solutions. Or you have the budget to go high-tech and state-of-the-art in re-imagining space and storage.
RE N OVATIN G Renovating your current space is more challenging. You have to work within the boundaries of what you already have. The goal is to find optimal ways to use that footprint to improve workflow and access, and to better secure what you store.
4
You know how students self-select their groupings in class? The athletes all sit together. The teacher’s pets sit up at the front near the board. Well, there are three main camps for storage projects. + Relocating to a new space + Expanding an existing space + Renovating current space
EXPANDING With expansion of an existing space, you can look forward to having more space and storage. But you’re more likely to want to re-purpose what you’ve been using before. Plus, you’re still limited by your environment. Factors such as HVAC, weight-bearing columns and fire exits can all impact the project design.
Understanding your situation and its challenges can help you in goal-setting for your project. Identify all your stakeholders: + Who needs to be consulted? + Who are the decision-makers? + What end-users will be involved? + Are those end-users going to be trained in the storage solutions offered? Knowing the key players makes it easier to gauge your objectives. A storage expert will come in and ask “what problems are you trying to solve?” The answers can vary for different people within an organization — even on the same project. Priorities include:
WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT YOUR STORAGE? Your storage solution expert is going to have a lot of questions for you. Questions like...: What do you have that needs to be stored?
+ Increasing amount of storage
How often is what is stored need to be accessed?
+ Creating flexible spaces
Does it need to be secured?
+ Improving access to what is stored
What role does storage play in workflow?
+ Reducing footprint of storage solution + Designing storage to enhance workflow
Will storage be publicly available or not?
+ Saving money and ROI
Do you need to track the items stored?
Knowing how much you’re ready to invest can help shape your storage project brainstorming from the outset. It’s all part of getting to know your project. Doing this thinking now helps position your project for success as you move forward.
Do items need to be kept temperature controlled?

Stuff happens. Stuff multiplies. Stuff becomes unmanageable. Before you know it, you’ve got valuable artifacts sitting on the floor of a damp basement. Or biological specimens stored in the same cooler someone would tote to a summer picnic. Or important case files lost somewhere in the pile of boxes in your records room. There are different types of storage for every need. Let’s do a crash course on the various storage types available to you.

High-density storage systems let you store more stuff in less space. Also known as mobile or compact storage, these systems can save up to 50% of floor space. Putting cabinets or shelving on mobile carriages allows you to move the aisles as needed to improve access and workflow. How it works:
Mobile carriages come in three types:
+ Wheeled mobile carriages are installed on tracks
+ Electric powered — push-button ease; ideal for more active, larger systems
+ Tracks can be built into or on top of the floor
+ Mechanical-assist — open aisles by rotating ergonomic drive handles; ideal for medium-sized storage with higher activity levels or heavier storage material
+ Virtually any type of storage can be mounted on carriages — your existing cabinets, shelves or new storage solutions
Electrical-Powered
+ Manual-assist — users push handles left or right to open aisles; ideal for smaller, low activity, and limited-access storage areas.

Smart storage is adding another area of intelligence to smart buildings. Smart lockers, for instance, do much more than simply store items.
Parcel Delivery
Permanently Assigned or Temporary Use
Offering employees or building tenants on-site electronic parcel delivery lockers can reduce turnover. People feel their needs are being met on-site.
Temporary-use and agile lockers represent the flexibility required for today’s working, learning, and living spaces. When you start to think about storage in new and different ways, it becomes more than a simple locker — it’s a way to enable a sense of ownership, communication, and function.
Laundry/Food Delivery Smart lockers also enable a streamlined experience for delivery of food, dry-cleaning and more. With an automated delivery process, drivers deposit the item(s) into an available locker and the recipients receive a text or email notification. The recipient can pick their delivery up at their convenience. Smart lockers can range from typical lockers to refrigerated lockers — and even lockers for frozen items.
Exchange of Goods It’s not just laundry and food that are being exchanged in smart lockers. Businesses stores and schools are using smart technology to aide in the distribution/exchange of laptops, books, retail merchandise — whatever needs to be securely exchanged with patrons or employees.
The Lock is the Key The days of combination locks are dwindling. Smart options today include: + Battery-operated locks requiring a 4-digit PIN or RFID scan + Networked locks accessed using RFID card, wearables or using Bluetooth + Networked locks with mobile app access + Networked dual-option locks with keypad for short-term users and RFID for long-term employees or residents + Networked keypad locks for short-term or self-assign solutions

Benefits of Smart Storage include: + Intelligent locks secure particular items that need controlled access management. + University mail centers reduce waits for students collecting packages with smart parcel delivery lockers linked to student ID card scanners in campus dorms. + Athletic equipment access is tracked with RFID scanners on lockers. + Medical supply inventory control and security compliance is improved with smart storage. + Weight sensitive lockers are programmed to notify users if they have not removed all the contents of their smart storage unit. + Climate controlled lockers hold resident or employee grocery deliveries for pickup. + Smart evidence lockers notify officers something is awaiting processing. + Smart technology integrates with other software systems (Smart Building, RFID, Point of Sale, etc.) through the use of APIs. + Using “touch-less technology allows for interacting with a locker with virtually no contact.

Whether working directly with the client or the client’s architect, designer, engineer or contractor, Patterson Pope’s certified planners co-design a customized storage solution. Based on measurements of the available space and inventory of your current storage solutions, our dedicated planners will draw up specs to meet your needs. We want to make the project suit your needs. So, we have revision stages. Our storage specialist brings the designs back to your decision makers to ask for your input before anything is settled and agreed upon. LEARN MORE Click here to learn more about the P2 Process
All in a Day’s Planning Our planners might get handed detailed, thorough specs from the site visit and consultation with the client. Or they’re given just the bare essentials and carte blanche to find the best solution. Using multiple design tools, the planners then move different storage options around in space to maximize the effectiveness of the storage in the space. They’re not only thinking about aesthetics, but also how the storage solution will be used today — and in the future.
