Beethoven Cycle he sixteen quartets of Ludwig van Beethoven provide a comprehensive picture of this master composer’s development over the course of his creative life. String Quartets Nos. 1- 6, Opus 18, demonstrate Beethoven’s total mastery of the classical string quartet as developed by Haydn and Mozart. The next three, the “Razumovsky” Quartets, greatly expanded the form and incorporated a new degree of emotional sensitivity and drama. This expansion and exploration continued with String Quartets Nos. 10 -11, Opus 74, “Harp” and Opus 95, “Serioso.” The last five quartets and the “Grosse Fuge” are the composer’s last completed works, and widely considered to be among the greatest musical compositions ever written.
T
For a number of years, we have offered a presentation of the complete Beethoven quartets in six
concerts, featuring three quartets from North America and three from Europe — an exceptional journey for any audience. These six concerts can be presented over the course of a single season or divided into two seasons with three concerts in each, at a total fee of $40,000 – $60,000 depending on routing and the artists involved. “In a way, it is less a cycle than a quartet series with a theme. That might have been a serious objection 30 years ago, but these days we get a traditional Beethoven cycle nearly every season. We get plenty of unrelated quartet concerts too. This series brings a refreshing variety to the Beethoven works and imposes a unifying purpose on the parade of quartets.” –The New York Times
