ood evening and welcome to the Turnbull Ground for the visit of my former club Bradford City. A warm welcome this evening to the my opposite number Phil Parkinson, his players, staff, officials and supporters. I’m sure you will be made very welcome tonight and we thank you for not only to agreeing to this friendly, but also for agreeing to bring such a strong side. I had a great time with Bradford City Football Club, and I am delighted to be welcoming them to the Turnbull. It’ll be good to catch up with a few familiar faces tonight! We’re beginning to build a strong squad ahead of the upcoming campaign, making some fantastic signings in Adam Gell, Callum Martin and Mikey Roberts. We are all familiar with what Callum can do, having seen him in a blue shirt previously. He is a tricky winger and brings pace to the side.

Adam Gell was, for me, the best midfielder in the Northern League last season and Mikey Roberts is an out and out goalscorer- something we have been lacking. Myself and everybody at the club would like to thank the anonymous backer who made the Roberts transfer possible, paying Spennymoor’s asking price for him. We’ll see you all back here on Saturday for the visit of Darlington, with a number of familiar faces returning to the club. We’re looking forward to testing ourselves against a side at our level- something unusual at this level in pre-season. I think it’ll stand well for us going into the league campaign. Enjoy the game and let the best team win.

Ben Williams joined on a free transfer ahead of the 2014-15 season having spent time in Scotland with Hibernian. A product of Manchester United’s youth system, the experienced stopper was an understudy to Jordan Pickford last season, the latter was on loan from Premier League side Sunderland. Pickford was recalled, meaning Williams became the first choice stopper and he played a pivotal role in City’s run to the FA Cup QuarterFinals. Stephen Darby is the current captain at Bradford City, the Liverpudlian full back epitomises consistency. The 26 year old came through Liverpool’s youth system and made a handful of appearances for the first team. Having spent time out on loan with Swindon Town, Notts County and Rochdale, Darby was given his chance at Valley Parade and in the three years since he signed, has experienced and played a key role in the club’s success. Australian full back James Meredith joined ahead of the ‘History Making’ 2012-13 season where City would go on to earn promotion and reach the League Cup final at Wembley Stadium. He began his professional career

with Derby County and had spells with Sligo Rovers and Shrewsbury Town before a move to York City in 2009. Meredith made over 160 appearances for the Minstermen before his arrival here in West Yorkshire. A summer acquisition from Championship side Blackburn Rovers, Josh Morris will hope to play a key role for the Bantams during the 2015-16 season. Although he didn’t feature regularly at Ewood Park, Josh spent time on loan with Yeovil Town, Rotherham United, Carlisle United and most recently Fleetwood Town. For the Cod Army, he bagged 8 goals in 45 league appearances last season. An experienced Irish defender, Alan Sheehan can feature at either left back or centre back. He spent the first 5 years of his senior career with Leicester City and following brief spells with Leeds United and Swindon Town, he joined Notts County in 2011. Alan played a key

role for County during his three years with the club, making over 100 league appearances before a summer 2014 switch to Bradford City. An exciting wide midfielder, Mark Marshall arrived this summer following his departure from Port Vale, with whom he spent the 2014-15 season. He began his career in non-league with the likes of Carshalton Athletic, Grays Athletic and Eastleigh before being offered his chance by Swindon Town. Since his departure from the latter in 2010, he had featured for Hereford United, Barnet and Coventry prior to his arrival at Vale Park. The anchor man in City’s midfield, Gary Liddle enjoyed an impressive first season at Bradford last season following his arrival from Notts County. Born in Middlesbrough, the 29 year old came through the youth system of his hometown club in 2002. Four years later, he joined

Hartlepool United and racked up close to 300 appearances in 6 years before his spell with Notts (2012-2014). The longest serving player at the football club, James Hanson is a local lad who arrived at Bradford City in 2009 from non-league outfit Guiseley for £7,500. Prior to Guiseley, he had a spell with Eccleshill United, but he has really made a name for himself at Bradford, becoming one of the feared frontmen in League One. To date, he has scored 74 goals in 269 appearances. A talented young central midfielder, Billy Knott enjoyed a successful first season at Bradford last time out. Signed on a free transfer following his release from Sunderland, he had previously spent time in the youth system at West Ham United and Chelsea before his move to the North East. Whilst with The Black Cats, he spent time on loan at AFC Wimbledon, Woking, Wycombe Wanderers and Port Vale before his move to Valley Parade last summer.

City’s top scorer in 2014-15 with 14 goals in all competitions, Billy Clarke joined on a free transfer last summer following his departure from Crawley Town. The Republic of Ireland born attacker began his professional career with Ipswich Town in 2005 and went on to make 49 league appearances over the next 4 years. In 2009 he moved to Blackpool, but with The Tangerines rise to the Premier League, his game time came irregularly. After a loan spell with Sheffield United, he moved to Crawley Town in 2012. A recent signing following his departure from Blackpool, Steven Davies arrives at Valley Parade to bolster the attack going into the 2015-16 season and the third consecutive season in League One. The Liverpool born striker began his career with Tranmere Rovers in 2005 and went on to feature for Derby County and Bristol City before a switch to Blackpool. A technically superb player who is capable in the centre of defence or midfield, Christopher Routis arrived at Bradford City on the eve of the 2014-15 season following his release by Swiss club Servette. The Frenchman began his career with Servette and made 87 league

appearances (5 goals) before a switch to the English game after impressing on trial. Filipe Morais – Midfield Unfortunately, Filipe will be out of action for the next 6-9 months with an ACL Knee injury but when on the field he possesses real attacking flair and ability. Usually played on the right hand side of midfield, Morais was signed last year following his departure from Stevenage. A Chelsea academy product, the Portuguese also had spells with Millwall, Hibernian, Inverness CT, St. Johnstone and Oldham Athletic.

of last season on loan at Bradford from Blackpool, but made the move permanent in the summer following his release from his parent club. The former England youth international began his career with Middlesbrough in 2004 and spent 8 years with the club, amassing almost 140 appearances before a 2012 switch to Sheffield United. During two years at Bramall Lane, McMahon made 68 appearances before his move to Blackpool in 2014.

Currently on a season long loan from fellow League One club A no nonsense central Peterborough United, defender, Rory McArdle Luke James comes highly regarded having had his best season yet last season, scooping signed for The Posh from Hartlepool United most of the awards at the end of season Player for in excess of £500,000 Awards ceremony. less than 12 months ago. Also a first year professional, Sam Wright is a tenacious, hard-working centre midfielder who has been likened to club legend Stuart McCall, for his style of play and his ginger hair colour. Sam, like Dylan, will be looking to force their way into Phil Parkinson’s plans for the upcoming 2015-16 season. Like Filipe Morais, it seems Joe Brennan will miss large parts of the season with a serious injury. Only a first year professional, Joe’s key attributes are his pace, strength and eye for goal. Having spent time in the youth system at Huddersfield Town, he did enough during two title winning years in Bradford’s U18s to earn a professional contract. James King will be familiar to Whitby Town having spent time on work experience loan with the club last season. A first year professional also, James is a central defender who has a great level of composure on the ball and had a great season in the academy last season, doing enough to impress and earn a professional contract. Like his fellow first years, he will be looking to break into the first team.

THEGAFFER Phil Parkinson’s career started on the playing side. He started as a youngster at Southampton, before turning out for Bury FC and Reading, becoming a club legend during his 361 appearances at the Madjeski. His managerial career started at Colchester United in 2003 and he immediately led them to safety. He was to spend 3 years at Layer Road, leading the Us to an unlikely promotion to the Championship, as well as a number of FA Cup runs. Parkinson then moved on to Hull in 2006, just after leading Colchester to promotion. However, when he led Hull against his old club, he was embarrassed as his former club romped home 5–1. After another defeat in the next match at home to Southampton 4–2, he left by “mutual consent” in early December, leaving Hull in the relegation zone. Parkinson took the Charlton job on New Years Eve 2008, despite the fact he didn’t win any of the 8 games in caretaker charge. Charlton were relegated that season. In League One, Charlton started off very well winning their first six league matches. Charlton continued to do well and were in the top two until the new year where Norwich overtook them and they then never returned to the top two, finishing fourth in the league. In the play-offs, they had to play Swindon Town over the two legs and lost the first one 2–1 at the County Ground. But in the second they turned it around and led 2–0 but Swindon fought back and it finished 3–3 on aggregate. Swindon then continued and won on penalties 5–4 to condemn Parkinson and his men to another season in League One. He then took the Bradford City job in August 2011, and has since led Bradford through a famous period in their history, which has seen them make the Capital One Cup final, beating Arsenal on penalties in the quarter final, and Aston Villa over two legs in the semi-final. They would eventually lose to Swansea City, 5-0, in the final. Their cup exploits were repeated under Parkinson earlier this year though, with the FA Cup proving the competition of choice, as the Bantams won 4-2 at Premier League champions Chelsea, before knocking Sunderland out. Reading ended their cup run in the next round.

HISTORY

FILES

Bradford City were formed in 1903 as a result of a series of meetings called by James Whyte, a sub-editor of the Bradford Observer, with Football Association representatives and officials at Manningham F.C., a rugby league side. The Football League saw the invitation as a chance to promote association football in the rugby leaguedominated county of the West Riding of Yorkshire. It duly elected the new club into Division Two of the league, in place of Doncaster Rovers. Four days later, at the 23rd annual meeting of Manningham FC, the committee decided to change code from rugby league to association football. Bradford City Association Football Club were formed without having played a game, taking over Manningham’s colours of claret and amber, and their Valley Parade ground. Robert Campbell was appointed the club’s first manager and with the help of the new committee, he assembled a playing squad at the cost of £917 10s 0d. City’s first game was a 2–0 defeat at Grimsby Town on 1 September 1903, six days before their first home game attracted 11,000 fans. The club finished 10th in their first season. Peter O’Rourke took over as manager in November 1905, and he led City to the Division Two title in 1907–08 and with it promotion to the Division One. Having narrowly avoided relegation in their first season in the top

flight, City recorded their highest finish of 5th in 1910–11. The same season they won the FA Cup, when a goal from captain Jimmy Speirs won the final replay against Newcastle United. City’s defence of the cup, which included the first Bradford derby against Bradford Park Avenue, was stopped by Barnsley after a run of 12 consecutive clean sheets. City remained in the top flight in the period up to the First World War and for three seasons afterwards, but were relegated in 1921–22 along with Manchester United. Back in Division Two, attendances dropped and City struggled for form, with five consecutive finishes in the bottom half of the table. They suffered a second relegation to Division Three (North) in 1926–27. Two seasons later, O’Rourke, who had initially retired in 1921 following the death of his son, returned and guided City to promotion with a record haul of 128 goals. O’Rourke left for a second time after one more season, and although City spent a total of eight seasons back in Division Two, they rarely looked like earning promotion back to the top flight. Instead in 1936–37, the club were relegated back to Division Three (North). City won their third piece of silverware two seasons later, when they lifted the Third Division North Challenge Cup, but they were unable to defend the trophy because competitive football was suspended for the Second World War. After the war, City went through two managers in the first two seasons, and were consistently in the bottom half of the Division Three (North) table until 1955–56. After three successive top half finishes, City

were placed in the new Division Three in 1958–59. Bradford spent just three seasons in Division Three, but during their relegation season in 1960–61, they upset Division One side Manchester United in the inaugural season of the League Cup. With 34 goals from David Layne, City nearly earned an instant promotion the following season 1961–62, but it did also include a record 9–1 defeat to Colchester United. Layne left for Sheffield Wednesday, and without him City finished second from bottom of the league and had to apply for re-election. Bradford City just failed to win promotion in 1963–64, winning more games than any other team in the division that season, twenty five, with Rodney Green top scoring with 29 league goals. There followed three difficult seasons during which time manager Grenville Hair died following a heart attack in training, City returned to Division Three getting promoted in 1968–69. City’s stay in Division Three lasted just three years, when they finished bottom in 1971–72. Promotion via fourth spot was won again in 1976–77 but it was instantly followed by a relegation season. City failed to win promotion for three successive seasons, until the board appointed former England centre back Roy McFarland as manager in May 1981. McFarland won promotion in his first season, but was poached by his former club Derby County just six months later. City won compensation from Derby and installed another England international Trevor Cherry as McFarland’s replacement. Cherry, with former teammate Terry Yorath as his assistant manager, failed to win for two months, but

eventually the pair guided City to safety from relegation. During the summer, however, the club chairman Bob Martin had to call in the official receivers. The club was saved by former chairman Stafford Heginbotham and former board member Jack Tordoff, but to ensure the club could start the new season, prize asset, striker Bobby Campbell was sold to Derby. City struggled but so did Campbell, and when he returned, the club went on a record run of ten successive victories. Although they missed out on promotion, City won the league the following season 1984–85, to return to the second tier of The Football League. However, City’s triumph was overshadowed by the fire disaster, which killed 56 people when Valley Parade caught fire in the final game of the season. City played games away from Valley Parade for 19 months. But just ten days after the new £2.6 million ground was opened, Cherry was sacked. His replacement, Terry Dolan steered City away from possible relegation, before he mounted a promotion challenge the following season. City went top of the table in September 1987, but fell away during Christmas and missed out on promotion on the final day of the season. Instead they entered the playoffs, but were defeated in the semi-finals by Middlesbrough. Two years later City were relegated back to Division Three. For three seasons, City

finished mid-table in the third tier, which was renamed Division Two following the advent of the Premier League. In January 1994, Geoffrey Richmond came from Scarborough to take over as chairman, and promised to guide City to the Premier League within five years. He cleared the debts and after four months sacked manager Frank Stapleton to appoint his own manager, Lennie Lawrence. Lawrence left after little more than a year to join Luton Town but his successor, Chris Kamara took City to the play-offs and their first game at Wembley Stadium. They defeated Notts County 2–0 in the final to earn promotion to Division One. City avoided relegation the following season by winning their last two league games 1–0 against Charlton and then beating Queens Park Rangers 3–0 on the final day of the season, but Kamara was sacked in January 1998. Paul Jewell took over, initially on a temporary basis, before he was given a permanent contract. He bought the club’s first £1 million signings and guided the club to the Premier League— the first time they had been in the top flight for 77 years— with a second place finish. The following season, Jewell continued to defy the critics, who labelled his team Dad’s Army, by avoiding relegation again on the last day with a 1–0 victory over Liverpool, with a goal from David Wetherall. However, Jewell left shortly afterwards. His assistant Chris Hutchings was promoted to the manager’s position, and despite a series of new expensive signings, he was sacked by November 2000, with City second from bottom of the league. Jim Jefferies took over

but could not save the club from relegation. At the end of the first season back in Division One, City were placed in administration with debts of nearly £13 million. Two years later, the club suffered a second spell in administration and a second relegation. Two top-half finishes followed, but the club were relegated for a third time in seven seasons in 2006–07 meaning the following season would be their first in the bottom tier for 26 seasons. Former player Stuart McCall was appointed the new manager, and although he said anything less than promotion would be a failure, he later changed his mind after a poor start and finally led the team to a 10th place finish. McCall eventually left Bradford City on 8 February 2010 following a board meeting after a run of poor results. In September 2011 the club became linked with American amateur side SC United Bantams. In January 2013, City became the first club from the fourth tier of English football since Rochdale in 1962 to reach the Football League Cup final, and the first fourth tier club ever to reach a major Wembley Cup Final. They defeated three Premier League sides en route to the final – Wigan Athletic 4–2 on penalties in the fourth round,

Arsenal 3–2 on penalties in the quarter-finals and Aston Villa 4–3 on aggregate over the two legs of the semi-final. They met Premier League side Swansea City in the final at Wembley, but lost 0–5. The run to the final is thought to be worth at least £1.3 million to the club, with the club’s joint chairman Mark Lawn stating that the final itself could be worth an additional £1 million, taking the clubs total earnings to £2.3 million during their 2012–13 Football League Cup campaign. On 18 May 2013, the club returned to Wembley where they defeated Northampton Town F.C. 3–0 in the League Two Playoff Final to secure a place in League One for 2013–14. On 24 January 2015, Bradford City caused an upset by beating Premiership-leaders Chelsea 4–2 away in the FA Cup. The victory sent Bradford through to the fifth round for the first time in 18 years. They beat Sunderland, another Premier League club, 2–0 at home in the next round on 15 February 2015. The club then faced Reading F.C. at home in the Quarter Finals, a match which resulted in a goalless draw. The replay was played on 16 March 2015 at the Madjeski Stadium, a game which resulted in Bradford being knocked out of the competition.

Tonight we welcome League One side and last season’s FA Cup giant killers Bradford City to the Turnbull Ground for Whitby’s fourth preseason friendly of the new season. Tonight’s game will be the 4th meeting between Whitby Town and Bradford City with all 3 previous games also played at the Turnbull Ground, and all resulting in Bradford victories. The first meeting between the sides came on Saturday 27th July 1985 after Whitby’s new player manager ex Leeds United and Scotland goalkeeper David Harvey used his connections with his former team mates to bring some high profile pre season games to the Turnbull Ground starting with Trevor Cherry’s Third Division Champions Bradford City. Harvey having played 6 games for Bradford the previous season. A crowd of 837 watched the game with whitby putting in a good first half performance, conceding only a single goal but in the end Whitby’s second Division opponents came out on top with a 4-1 victory. Harvey started himself in goal for Whitby and was joined by new signing’s Gary Watson, ex- Bradford and Halifax, Gordon Rayner, exThackley, Stephen Balcombe, Ex Leeds United and local Lad Paul Welham who played for Fishburn Park in the Teesside League. Bradford included their new signing from

Stats man Steven Holliday gives us a lowdown on the previous encounters with today’s opponents Manchester United, Scottish International Arthur Graham. Bradford failed to capitalise on a number of early chances with Whitby’s defence quick to get a tackle in and close them down, Don Goodman shot wide from a good position before Irish international Bobby Campbell failed to test Harvey with a couple of headers that he put wide. Bradford’s best chance in the first fifteen minutes came when Graham collected a short corner, turned and fired through a crowded area forcing Harvey to dive and turn the ball around the post. Whitby’s first real chance came when Mick Omoni got through on the right crossed for Geoff Lilley, who put his header wide. Then Lilley and Balcombe combined to set up Richie Walker but his cross into the area was well taken by Eric McManus in Bradford’s goal. With twenty two minutes gone Bradford took the lead, Stuart McCall picked up a loose ball on the left, raced through and slotted

the ball past the advancing Harvey and into the empty net. Welham tried his luck with a volley but McManus was equal to it and with five minutes to go until half time the visitors had two great chances to increase their lead. First from a Dave Evens free kick which was mis-kicked by Goodman and Harvey did well to parry John Hendrie’s follow up and then Rayner in trying to intercept a cross from Goodman, headed hard towards his own goal, Harvey doing well to block it and the rebound fell to Campbell but he failed to take advantage. The second half began with Bradford goalkeeper McManus swopping sides and replacing Harvey in Whitby’s goal with Peter Litchfield now in goal for Bradford. Bradford started the half on top and Campbell rattled the Whitby crossbar before McManus denied Martin Singleton, McManus pulling off some fine saves to keep Whitby in the game. Then after sixty minutes Whitby equalised, a free kick into the area was flicked on by Rayner and Watson powered a header past Litchfield for 1-1. But just a minute later Bradford regained the lead, Campbell shooting past McManus and then four minutes later Campbell got his second and Bradford’s third with a close range header. Singleton making it 4-1 five minutes later when his drive from twenty two yards floated over McManus and into the net. The teams that day

were: Whitby-Harvey (McManus 45), L.Scott (J.Scott 84), Walker, Watson, Rayner, Smith, Lilley, M.Omoni (Lawrence 50), Balcombe (Nelson 66), P.Omoni, Welham. Bradford-McManus (Litchfield 45), Abbott (Carmody 45), Withe, McCall, Jackson, Evens, Hendrie, Goodman (Thorpe 45), Campbell, Singleton, Graham. The next meeting between the two sides came on Tuesday 30th January 1990 when Terry Yorath brought his Bradford City side to take on his ex Leeds United team mate Eddie Gray who was now manager of Whitby. Bradford again came out on top with a 4-1 victory in front of 251 spectators. Whitby scored first through Paul Pitman who also had a goal disallowed but by half time Bradford were 3-1 up thanks to a double from Greg Abbott and a Mark Leonard strike with Tony Adcock adding a fourth in the second half.

Unfortunately Bradford were relegated from the Second Division at the end of the season along with Stoke City and Bournemouth. The last meeting between the sides came on Friday July 21st 1995 and in front of a crowd of 350 Lennie Lawrence’s Bradford City side

came out on top with a 3-0 victory. Whitby held their own for most of the first half before Bradford were awarded a penalty kick late in the half, Lee Power stepped up to fire the ball past Matthew Coddington to give Bradford the lead. Two more goals in the second half from S. Jackson and Neil Tolson gave Bradford the victory. Whitby’s line up that day: Coddington, I.Williams, Welham, T. Smith, Harland, J.Scott, Ward, Lee, Hinchley, N.Scaife (Heblich 45), Adamson.

Good evening and welcome back to the Turnbull Ground. Anyone who missed Saturday’s game but saw the scoreline will think the Blues were comfortably beaten, but nothing could be further from the truth. We matched them for long periods of the game and to push a Conference North side that hard was a great credit to us. It was a first run out for defender Kieran Weledji, who I thought looked very confident on the ball and improved as the match wore on. If Kieran is to join Lee Bullock and Richard Pell in the centre of defence, we

our first league game, a fortnight on Saturday here, against Stourbridge. We started there last season.

The man with the golden microphone gives us the lowdown on both the Blues and today’s visitors

will have all the bases covered, in my view. Ibby is then able to play on the right freeing up Callum Martin to push Shep, Massa and Ross Gardner for a wide midfield position. I feel Darren is starting with what looks like as strong as side as he can muster ahead of

So, a huge boost for everyone to have last season’s FA Cup quarter finalists Bradford City at the Turnbull Ground. Chelsea and Sunderland were both put to the sword last term, but can they do it at the Turnbull? Darren has been working hard to secure this friendly and like Lee Bullock is an ex City player, having played 28 times in 2007-08. Bully will no doubt be a bit of a cult hero with the Bantams fans after 115 appearances for the Valley Parade side, scoring five goals, between 2008 and 2012. Whilst the Blues have had many a tussle with Bradford Park Avenue, this is our first-ever clash with City and it promises to be a great occasion. The Bantams are skippered by former

Liverpool defender Stephen Darby. Bradford also have a great recent pedigree in the League Cup after shocking Arsenal and Aston Villa, before Swansea City ended their dream at Wembley Stadium in 2013. Don’t forget, we still have two more home friendlies to play, with Darlington (and no doubt a few familiar faces) here on Saturday and First Division North Kendal Town at the Turnbull, a week later. This time next week, we’re down the road at Pickering Town. I think a feature of our play in all three

friendlies played so far this summer has been the short passing and willingness to move the ball quickly with one touch. No doubt Darren, Cammy, Bully and Dennis are drumming that philosophy into the players. Finally, a reminder that Whitby Town Radio continues apace this

season with live coverage of each and every Blues game. I must thank Lee West for all his technical help so far, you should notice an improvement in sound quality for most games this term. We are still looking for sponsors at £60 a season or £10 per game- email: whitbytownradio@gmail.com. Enjoy the game and let the best team win (as long as it’s us)! Why not log into www. whitby-town.com/forum or tweet @turnbulltweeter to discuss tonight’s game... Goose

EVO-STIK MATCH OFFICIALS GIVEN NEW GUIDANCE ON OFFSIDE LAW The EVO-STIK Northern Premier League’s fans, players and officials can look forward to seeing more consistency in the interpretation of one of the key rules governing off-side next season thanks to the guardians of the laws of the game. Following a meeting in June of the International FA Board (IFAB) to consider new advice on ‘interfering with an opponent’ in order to ensure greater clarity and uniformity around the world, the Football Association issued new guidance notes on Tuesday to leagues across the country for the 2015-16 campaign. Established in 1886 to agree standardised laws for international competition, the IFAB has been recognised by FIFA since the foundation of the game’s governing body in 1904 as having jurisdiction over football’s laws. They took action this summer following requests from a number of football associations and confederations seeking more clarity regarding offside under Law 11. In their circular, the FA’s Neale Barry, head of senior referee development, urged match officials to carefully

study the 12 pages of guidance notes from the IFAB which include illustrated examples specifically relating to the practical interpretation in the application of the rules on offside.

LADIES MEETING AT MOORS IN NORTH EAST DERBY EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Spennymoor Town are looking forward to hosting Sunderland Ladies who pulled off a shock win over Women’s Super League leaders Chelsea last week. The Moors say a Lady Black Cats development side are taking on Newcastle United Ladies in a friendly at Brewery Field on Tuesday 4 August, kick off 7.30pm. Managed by Carlton Fairweather and in their debut season in the women’s top flight after winning FA WSL 2

last term, pictured, Sunderland pulled off a shock 4-0 win over the Blues at Hetton-le-Hole last week to become the first side to beat them this season. Newcastle United Ladies play in the FAW Premier League Northern, three divisions below Sunderland and coach Keith Graydon has thanked the Moors for their support in staging the game. He said: “The whole Newcastle United squad are looking forward to playing at such a great facility, and we would like to thank Spennymoor Town for hosting the game free of charge, saving vital funds for the long season ahead.”

SUSPECTS RELEASED ON BAIL AFTER RAID ARRESTS EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Newcastle Town have confirmed that two men has been arrested and bailed

until next month by police following last Friday’s raid on their stadium by thieves and vandals. Castle officials were left to clean up thousands of pounds worth of damage at the Aspire Stadium, pictured, after the break-in during the early hours but later went ahead with a planned friendly against Crewe Alexandra on Friday night. Police say both men are aged 35, are from the Stoke-on-Trent area and were bailed pending further inquiries. They were arrested in the vicinity after a search of the area recovered a number of items of stolen property. Officials at the First Division South club said they were “devastated and saddened” at the weekend following the attack on the club’s facilities which are run by volunteers for the benefit of their local community.

TRINITY STAR RETURNS TO COACH NEW ACADEMY SIDE Gainsborough Trinity midfielder Jamie Yates has been named as the first coach of EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Matlock Town’s new NPL Football Academy side. The 26-year-old, who was on loan at the Autoworld Arena last season from North Ferriby United, has been welcomed back to the Premier Division club by Gladiators manager Mark Hume. Hume said: “In

The NPL Academy continues to go from strength to strength (C) NPL Academy

my view Jamie was the outstanding candidate and I’m delighted he’s come to Matlock to work with our academy and I believe he’ll do very well.” Yates, whose father Lenny Yates was a crowd favourite at Matlock in the 1980s, was appointed after the Gladiators signed up to join the ground-breaking NPLFA which last week unveiled a new a strategic partnership with Soccer Chance USA, the UK arm of Global Premier Soccer and one of the world’s leading providers of US sports scholarships with links to German giants Bayern Munich. The EVO-STIK NPL became the first league in English football to launch a youth league and academy combining football with further education when the NPLFA opened its doors to its first intake of students last September, Micklover Sports winning the inaugural NPL FA Youth League, pictured. After its successful launch at five pilot clubs Belper Town, Halesowen Town, Kidsgrove Athletic, Lancaster City, Matlock Town, Mossley AFC, Warrington Town and Witton Albion all signed up to

double the number of clubs for next season. Launched with the backing of the Football Association to provide career pathways into the football industry, students aged 16-18 who win a place with the NPLFA study on two year courses for Level 3 Business and Technology Education Council (BTEC) qualifications. While studying, students compete in the EVOSTIK NPL Youth League, the academy’s own FA sanctioned competition. They also play in national competitions like the FA Youth Cup while being trained on a daily basis by UEFA qualified coaches. The NPLFA programme also runs alongside existing youth setups at participating clubs to offer the best of each year’s intake the chance to play senior Non-League football. 17/07/15 - Turnbull Ground - Pre-Season Friendly - 358 Report by Duncan Atkins Town’s pre-season schedule began in promising style as they gave League Two Hartlepool a real run for their money last night. In front of an encouraging gate of 358, the Blues began this now-traditional clash in ideal fashion. New striker Mikey Roberts, just signed from Spennymoor, took just 12 minutes to open his account for the Blues, latching on to a neat through ball and firing a composed, confident finish past keeper Adam Bartlett. Within 60 seconds, Rakish Bingham scraped the paintwork of the far post with a low drive. Whitby’s slick pass and move game was impressing the fans, The Blues could have doubled their lead midway through the first half when James

Riseborough’s darting run was picked out. The ball was crying out to be thundered at goal first time but he took one too many touches and the danger was cleared. Whitby went into the break fully deserving of their lead. The start of the second period saw both sides change virtually their whole line-ups – nothing new in pre-season although confusing for spectators and the media alike. Pools’ Connor Smith had a great chance to level only three minutes in to the half, beating two men in blue but pulling his right-footed shot across the face of goal. The pressure on the hosts began to build and Bland was saved by the bar

after Brad Walker’s shot took a huge deflection. From the corner, however, the visitors were level as Rhys Oates outjumped Bland to nod home with 20 minutes remaining. Only a fantastic slide tackle from Whitby sub Liam Shepherd kept the sides on equal terms, as he denied Jake Carroll what looked a certain goal. Bland then came to the rescue, reacting sharply to block Smith’s drive with his legs.

“I was very pleased with the performance and shape,” he told the Whitby Gazette.

Whitby managed a few late forays forward without troubling the Hartlepool goal but their overall performance pleased boss Darren Williams.

“We looked in good shape for our first game against a professional team in their third game.” Whitby Town: Bland, Hagman, Robinson (c), Hassan,
