The Perfect Touch

Brett Kehely

Touch Up Guys has prime areas available in Auckland and elsewhere

According to Martin Smith, ‘The ideal Touch Up Guys franchisee is someone who loves working with their hands, likes cars and is a bit of a perfectionist.’ It also helps if they know what they want from life, like Brett Kehely.

Four years ago, Brett was driving through Auckland in his Audi TT when he saw a Touch Up Guys franchisee at work and stopped for a chat. The franchise happened to be for sale, and Brett ended up buying it!

‘After a very pressured career in the corporate world, I had been looking towards early retirement, but I wasn’t quite there yet,’ Brett explains. ‘Touch Up Guys is a mobile service that repairs bumper scuffs, stone chips, scratches and other damage on vehicles of all types, and I was interested to learn more about it.

‘Having chatted to Martin, the NZ master franchisee for Touch Up Guys, and some of the Guys themselves, I realised that with this business I could make good money, have fun, enjoy cars and still retire early.’

Constant demand

‘I’ve since had four really good years in my Central Auckland territory, but now the call of our property on the Coromandel is proving too much and I’m ready for the next stage in my life – so I’m putting my lucrative business on the market.

‘There has simply never been a shortage of work in this area, even during the last Covid-struck year. I’ve been in constant demand and if I wanted to, I could probably make a big living from the car dealerships alone.

‘Instead, I’ve enjoyed a decent work/life balance, paying myself $1200 a week and getting a lot of pleasure out of producing great results for local people. For someone with the right drive and enthusiasm, though, there is so much potential in this territory it wouldn’t surprise me if they were able to put on a second van to service the car yards.’

No experience required

‘A complete Touch Up Guys package for a new franchisee costs between $88,000 and $120,000 +gst, depending on whether the mobile workshop is leased or bought outright,’ Martin explains. ‘This includes an exclusive territory, all the equipment you need, and a three-week training course followed by on-site support for at least a month.

‘You don’t need experience – we use highly-advanced specialist equipment which makes colour matching a straightforward process, and it’s a business that’s proved resistant to both lockdowns and online sales. After all, you can’t fix a scratch over the internet!

‘So if you are keen to run your own business in a thriving industry, give me a call,’ suggests Martin. ‘Central Auckland is now available and ripe for expansion, and we have new areas available around the country, too.’
