The Bricks 4 Kidz franchise support team

Bricks 4 Kidz inspire the next generation of innovators – and business owners nationwide

Bricks 4 Kidz is an award-winning educational franchise utilising Lego® bricks – arguably the world’s favourite toy – to teach children the principles of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art & Maths (STEAM). Established in the United States in 2008, the franchise is the largest provider of STEAM-based educational enrichment programmes in the world, with franchises in over 836 cities in 46 countries.

Lorraine Yu brought Bricks 4 Kidz to New Zealand in November 2018 and set out to make its programmes accessible to all tamariki of New Zealand. Today, there are 12 franchises in Auckland, Hamilton, Tauranga and Christchurch, with new opportunities available in Wellington, Taranaki, Hawke’s Bay, Palmerston North, Christchurch Central and South, Dunedin and Invercargill.

‘While we’re based on a strong, internationally-renowned foundation, we’ve established ourselves here with a New Zealand-based curriculum developed by our passionate local team,’ says Lorraine. ‘We endeavour to develop and deliver programmes which inspire children to dream more, learn more, do more and become more.’

Year-round revenue

Franchisees have access to a huge pool of ready-to-deliver programme materials and training which gives them over 20 different year-round revenue streams in their exclusive territory. These include robotics enrichment programmes both after school and/or on weekends, creative and fun Lego® -themed holiday programmes, pre-school programmes, birthday parties, corporate team-building events, and even senior citizens programmes.

Since all programmes, materials and teacher training are available in readyto-deliver format, franchisees can run Bricks 4 Kidz programmes in multiple locations at the same time, such as schools, community centres or libraries.

Carey Misplon, Bricks 4 Kidz New Zealand Curriculum Director, explains. ‘Our unique and evidence-based approach came from the recognition that children learn best when they are participating in activities that engage their curiosity and creativity.

‘By aligning our curriculum to the needs of Kiwi kids, we can have a real impact on their ability to problem-solve in the classroom and develop their growth mindset and future skills. Our focus is on the Key Competencies outlined in the New Zealand curriculum: critical thinking, relating to others, managing oneself, and participating and contributing to one’s learning. These are all taught through our purpose-based play programmes.

‘As far as the kids are concerned, they think it’s fun; you know it’s educational!’

Low cost, easy start up model

Bricks 4 Kidz can be started as a mobile business, with investment starting from $60,000 +gst and low operating costs. ‘The exclusive Bricks 4 Kidz Lego® Technic project kits are easily transportable, so franchisees can operate in venues such as schools, kindergartens, community centres, libraries, youth centres and business premises,’ says Franchise Manager Queena Lee. ‘This enables franchisees to start trading immediately. Some then establish a Bricks 4 Kidz Creativity Centre that can be used for classes, as a birthday party venue and for children’s entertainment events.

‘Full training is provided, and there’s ongoing programme development and training, as well as access to operating and marketing systems, and constant back-up from the New Zealand franchise support office.’

The business has been designed to be pandemic-proof, too. ‘All future materials developed by our Curriculum Director have been created with the vision of taking the programme online in the event of another lockdown,’ Queena explains.
