GROWING with intent

Jim’s Test & Tag has business waiting for people who want to be happy

Malcolm Bradley joined Jim’s Test & Tag in 2010 as a franchisee, took on the Hawkes Bay regional franchise three years later, and has just become division franchisor for the whole of New Zealand. ‘It’s such a first-class franchise that it seemed a natural progression,’ he says. ‘It means that local franchisees are supported by someone who knows what the business is about from the inside, and I can tell you that the franchisees are the most important people in the organisation. Happy franchisees mean a healthy, vibrant business.’

And Jim’s Test & Tag franchisees are happy. They provide testing and tagging services for electrical equipment, fire extinguishers and first aid equipment in workplaces throughout the country. By law, equipment needs to be inspected at least annually – more often in many cases –and the regulations ensure regular and repeat business for franchisees.

No qualifications required

Malcolm used to be in the laundry industry, but with two small children was looking for a business that allowed quality family time. ‘Jim’s Test & Tag gave me the flexibility I needed, and a lot more besides. You don’t need electrical qualifications, and you get superb training, systems and support.

‘Jim’s has always been clear about its aims: it grants franchise territories, never sells them. We don’t take just anyone, and we certainly don’t want people with no business sense. We tell people, “Find out about us!” Yes, we can tell you everything and make it sound good, but you need to look for yourself.

‘We give everyone a day on the road and tell them to talk to accountants, lawyers and existing franchisees. We’ll provide a list of all the franchisees to phone and if, after all that, you want to come aboard then we’ll train you and give you a business mentor, too.’

Work waiting

Jim’s Test & Tag is looking for additional franchisees throughout New Zealand due to demand. ‘Today, compliance is something businesses have to have – apart from increasing penalties for companies that don’t comply, failure to comply with the AS/NZS 3760 standard testing for electrical appliances is a prime target for insurers in the event of a claim. It means there is a huge quantity of work waiting for new franchisees,’ says Malcolm.

The franchise fee of $55,000 covers everything bar your vehicle. ‘Several areas in the North Island including Taranaki, Wairarapa and Auckland are in need of regional franchisors as well as franchisees, so there are larger opportunities, too. Jim’s is the largest home-based franchise in the southern hemisphere, and is currently establishing a headquarters and 0800 call centre in Christchurch to support further expansion in New Zealand across all its divisions.

‘Come and join us – and reap the rewards.’
