CITIZEN SPACES - CREATION OF A CULTURAL SPOT IN THE UNIVERSITY CAMPUS. MADRID
CITIZEN SPACES Analyzing the environment and the situation of the University residence ‘San Juan Evangelista’ – ‘Johnny’ currently abandoned and in disuse, it is recognized the importance of creating a space for revival of both the building and the University Campus. It is observed in the city three powerful spots of cultural, artistic and civic life and it is proposed the creation of a fourth focus, promoted by a young, university population.
URBAN CONTEXT Placing ‘Johnny’ in the limit of the eastern area of university campus. This privileged location is going to be enhanced as a meeting point of the population. Nowadays, the border between both zones is very accused, generating a university ghetto effect that aims to be dissolved with this new proposal.
NEW USE Most of the residences and colleges of Madrid are located in the University Campus, however, it is observed the annual detriment of residents in high school and the rehabilitation of the building to return it to its original use is discarded.
GREEN AREAS In addition, there is a shortage of free landscaped spaces and squares that invite a temporary use and, after observing the protection levels of the vegetation, it is decided to strengthen the garden that occupies the interior of the plot. The current state of the garden is rather precarious, due to the scarce care of the garden and the occupation that visibly affected both the exterior spaces and the rest of the building. It is proposed the extension of the garden to the rest of the plot and the inclusion of vegetation inside the building, always relating it to collective activities, whether work or leisure.
SUSTAINABLE ART It is proposed the creation of an ART PRODUCTION CENTER, a basic structure if we want to have a sustainable production system for the formation professional and highly prepared artists.
ARTIST IN RESIDENCE A study of the artistic residences at different levels is carried out, and it is detected the scarcity of artistic residences in Madrid. More than a workspace, an art production center must OFFER A CONTEXT, either in the form of an artistic project, network or circuit.

VALUE OF PREEXISTENCE The building, its architectural value and its state after the occupation is analyzed. The final conclusion is to rehabilitate it. Some aspects of the building considered as potentialities are going to be strenghten and others modified, due to the state of conservation or the flexibility to adapt to the new program.. It seeks to reactivate the abandoned building, recovering the cultural character it has had throughout its history.

CURRENT STATE Due to the disuse of the building with the complete lack of activity, and the occupation to which it has been subjected, the building is in a state of abandon, not only in its appearance but also in its construction.
DETAIL OF THE PREEXISTENCE
PROPOSAL CONCEPT The intervention proposes a series of actions throughout the building, of different scales and with different intentions, depending on the concrete use to which they are destined and the place where they are located.
CULTURAL CHARACTER As a complement to this cultural character, there will be developed: a center for artistic production, a large exhibition and event production space and a set of public spaces dedicated to workshops and multiple activities to restore the public character of the building beyond the university.
ARTIST RESIDENCE ART PRODUCTION CENTER
THE FACTORY - EXHIBITION SPACE GALLERY AND EVENT PRODUCTION
PUBLIC USES SPACES OF INTERACTION
GLOBAL STRATEGY The whole intervention is thought as a global, but being carried out with small sutures, which put into value positive aspects of the original building and cause a certain use of space or a concrete interaction of the user with it.
All these interventions seek to improve the building for the new use without losing the essence of it. Some of these actions are the relation of two limited spaces (or not) through a carpentry, the introduction of vegetal elements in the architecture, the reutilization of recycled elements for the design of new ones, the introduction of new core of communication for the solvency of evacuation and adaptation to new spaces, the recovery and use of original materials in the pursuit of constructive purity and material economy, opening up double heights and enhancing existing spaces of interest in the original project and constructive sincerity , seeking to maintain the original character of the structure.

STRATEGY - ATELIER MODULE Double heights will be opened to relate the private spaces with the most public ones, and to obtain thus the concatenation of spaces of different scales without breaking the unit of the building, from the most public, in lower floors, even the most private, the center of artistic production in the last two floors.
STRUCTURAL INTERVENTION Due to the change of use and the adaptation to the proposed spaces, three important structural strategies will be carried out: demolition of structural elements, overloads of use and opening of hollows.
