THESIS PROJECT “SPACES FOR THE IDENTITY OF RIVERSIDE TERRITORIES” HONDA - TOLIMA. COLOMBIA

Colombia - Tolima

Tolima - Honda

Honda - Casco urbano

2018 The dis-articulation of the riverside its incidence in the loss of territorial identity, is due in part to the bad practices developed on the banks of the river, leading to the degradation of the unique tropical dry forest ecosystem in “Magdalena Medio, and another part, to the loss of one of the ancestral customs such as artisan fishing, due to the lack of spaces for its commemoration, exaltation and development as a cultural legacy for future generations. My interest in approaching this problem was the need to understand how, through architecture, a space for a population can be re-signified, allowing the articulation and regeneration of the edge from the rescue of traditions and customs; recovering at the same time an equilibrium of the ecosystem seeing the river as the most important natural element of the area.

A network of public space on the edge of the riverbank is proposed based on the assessment of the water system, part of the historical, cultural and landscape heritage of the city, restoring the relations of the historic center, the Malecon and its immediate surroundings; the river, the population, the tourist and the existing neighborhood fabric. A public space that allows or stimulates the activity and permanence on the riverbank, recovering the dialogue and the constant relationship with the river. As a main criterion, the dimensions and part of the scenarios constructed are respected, with the objective of discouraging the occupation of housing in risk areas and with an environmental potential.

Arte Sella

2019

During the night of the 29th October 2018 an unprecedented storm hit Arte Sella. It damaged hectares of secular woods and left a trail of devastation of mud, uprooted stumps and felled trees. Today Arte Sella is wounded and severely damaged. Now more than ever, it needs creativity and planning. For this reason, YAC is pleased to present Calamity Atelier. This competition aims at regenerating the largest art park of the contemporary scenario. It will do so by creating a system of ateliers and architectural works in order to make artists and visitors go back to those mountains.

unpredictable dualities The project aims to generate a constant back and forth between dualities that bring the user to the sense of place, in relation to the constant link between art and nature. Duality is nothing more than the coexistence of opposing elements that in spite of being antagonistic eventualy completing human experience and existence. For the project it is important that these relations or antagonistic elements lead to the artist and whoever visits Art Sella to discover situations that escape of being known or previously announced, the mystery and the unknown allow to bring a unique experience in life, architecture is a medium that allows us to connect these antagonistic elements and bring the user to endless experiences and reflections with the place and with the events that occur over time and transformed. Lose yourself in the dark to reach the light that lets in a vain , walk through open spaces and connect with nature, completely closed spaces where the being is able to communicate with the soul, walk the deck or play with the same architecture making allusion to the mountain by oblique elements, considering that it was a volume that emerged from the earth and extends to the sky. Commemorate what happened in the catastrophe by vertical modules, abstraction of the forest trees, think through this heal and remember, discover a work of art in the midst of light and heavy elements within the lush and deep forest, be able to run and jump, sit and lie down, observe and meditate, share and talk, analyze and reflect, transform and experience.

The museum is designed with a large roof which allows visitors to connect with the mountain and the beautiful surrounding Landscape. It also stands with various vertical elements which intend to conmemorate the cathastrophy at first sight. A ground level circulation and open space are meant to let nature in and transform the experience of the space. Exhibition romos are underneath the ground which generates a unique experience.

The restaurant is meant as a meeting point for arte sella visitors. Several dilatations on the roof and the walls, allow them to appreciate the Landscape while in it. The same is intended with transparent elements thar bring the mountain together with art. The importance of fire and heat in any meeting space is represented with a chimney located in the center.

The artists atelier are designed through the abstraction of the traditional alpine hut and the different housing typologies found in arte Sella. This is the reason for the fragmentation of the houses with two separate cores. One of them with the housing program and the other with the artist’s creativity and creation space. These two are joined together by a void which not only articulates them but frames the particular Arte Sella Landscape linking constantly the dweller with it.
