Leadership Team We are lucky to have a dedicated leadership team! Your leaders are—

Karen Apolinario

Shantal Rivas

Registered as the one in charge of all the things. Fully trained leader for Daisy and Brownie scouts, trained in Indoor Overnight and Outdoor Camping. Karen is a lifetime Girl Scout and mom to 4 kids! She was a Girl Scout through high school, has been active as a council trainer in the past, and has seen her boys through the Cub Scout program. She works as an occupational therapist for Castaic School district and as a Child Passenger Safety Technican for Child Passenger Safety Santa Clarita.

Shantal is working on finishing her on-line leader training and stepped up to fulfill this role! In doing so, she has graciously allowed our troop to use her house and yard for patrol challenge activities and backyard movie nights so far. Shantal is the mom to Alina, Alessa, and Julian. She is currently a Spanish teacher at West Ranch High School.

Carrie Celaya

Jessie Larmon

Carrie is also working on finishing her on-line training segments. She is a super volunteer and while not formally accepting the title of “leader” (yet) she is always willing to lend a hand and ideas. This year she will be helping us from the background with support as she cuddles her newborn. Carrie is an educator within the Saugus School District and is the mom to Izzy and David. We welcome Carrie formally to the leadership team

Trained leader in all levels. Indoor overnight and outdoor camping trained. Provides advisorship to the leadership team and select parent job positions. Jessie is a former high school science teacher and has been involved as a Girl Scout adult since her oldest daughter was Daisy age. She has taken on various Girl Scout roles including troop leader, leader consultant, and Service Unit Manager. Jessie currently is the nanny to Megan, aka Tiny Tornado.

Sammie Larmon

Janet Bell

Lifetime Girl Scout and trained leader. Takes on leadership role during college breaks. Sammie is currently a sophomore at LMU where she is a psychology major with big ambitions to master in Child and Family therapy and eventually a PhD in psychology. Her interests include theater acting, music, studio arts, community service and early childhood education. She loves to camp and plays the guitar, piano, and ukelele.

Troop treasurer. Makes deposits and keeps troop bank account records in order. All money will go through Janet and she approves bigger purchases such as troop supplies. Janet is mom to Isabella, Bianca, and Michael who are triplets!

Registration All girls must be registered through Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles Girl Scout council. Registration fees for this year are $25per girl. We strongly encourage that at least one adult per girl also be registered. An additional step for adults registering, is a background screening. It is self pay (usually around $11) and is good for 3 years. Registration is done independently through GSGLA’s MYGS website.

Dues We will be collecting dues this year. We will have dues set at $5 per month but would appreciate your help in having THE GIRLS turn in this money monthly. The total is $45 for the year. Parents will be asked to contribute toward activities and events throughout the year. Price range will be anywhere from $2-$50 depending on event.

Payments Payments may be made in cash or check.

When making payments for supplies, activities, etc. please make checks out to Troop 1732. You may also pay cash and receipts are available upon request. If paying cash for an event, please remember to clearly label the envelope or attach a sticky note so we can accurately record it. If paying by check, please write your daughter’s name and what the fees are for in the memo line.

Meetings (time and space) Our troop will be meeting two times per month

Our troop will be meeting two times per month at the Apolinario Residence. Many of the meetings will take place in the backyard with small group breakouts as needed. Meeting time will be 5:45 pm-7:15pm. Please make every effort to ensure your daughter arrives on time and is picked up promptly. In case of inclement weather, our meeting location may change to either the Rivas Residence or the English Residence, both in Saugus near/on Benz Road.

Meetings (what to bring) Every girl should wear their vest, tunic or sash appropriate for their age level At each meeting, every girl should wear their vest, tunic or sash appropriate for their age level. Girls should wear close-toe shoes and bring a jacket as appropriate. Girls should have a small bag or backpack with their age level Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting book, any journey books the troop is currently working on, and a water bottle. Special instructions may be communicated through the troop weekly email for upcoming needs.

Recognitions The girls will work on earning several recognitions to be worn on their uniform throughout the year. The girls will work on earning several recognitions to be worn on their uniform throughout the year. Brownies will be working on Brownie badges and brownie level journeys. We will work on many things as a troop with the girls deciding what to work on. Girls may also select age level incentives from their handbook and work on them independently. Girls will not be awarded earned recognitions unless they have done the work to earn them. For placement on the uniform, please see the applicable pages of your Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting book.

Fun Patches Girls may attend a workshop or an event where a fun patch is given at the end Several times throughout the year, girls may attend a workshop or an event where a fun patch is given at the end. These patches can be worn on the back of their vest or tunic or sewn onto a blanket or jacket. We will hand out fun patches and earned recognitions at least 3 times during the year at Court of Award ceremonies where we can celebrate the everyone!

Uniform - Brownie Every girl should wear their vest, tunic or sash appropriate for their age level Brownie official uniform is as follows— white shirt, brown skort/pants/shorts, blue neckerchief, brownie vest or sash (we HIGHLY recommend the vest as opposed to the sash). Full uniform will be asked of when doing boothing, door to door product sales, community service projects, and ceremonies. Girls also have a blue troop shirt. The troop shirt is to be worn when we need to look united but a full uniform may not be required (camping, hiking, etc.) The first troop t-shirt is provided to

each registered girl. If you find that your daughter needs a second one, those are available to purchase for $10 each. We also offer adult troop t-shirts to any adult who wishes to wear one when with the troop. These shirts can be purchased for $15.

Attendance It’s more fun when you are there

Attendance is never mandatory but please let us know if your scout will be not attending a meeting or outing. We use the numbers of scouts to know how many adults we will need. Additionally, in our troop this year the girls will be working in small patrol groups and it is nice to know ahead of time if we need to restructure the groups. If your scout misses a meeting, she might also be missing work toward incentives. In most cases this work can be made up at home.

Please be mindful of deadlines when we are asking for sign ups for events. Many times we need to give locations exact numbers or make payments. You are not considered signed up for an event until you put your sign up into shutterfly or contact Karen directly, and (when applicable) dropped off a deposit with either Karen or the troop treasurer.

Behavior We expect all the girls to “Live by the Girl Scout law” We expect all the girls to “Live by the Girl Scout law” when at meetings and events. We ask parents to remind their girls of expected behavior for group situations. When out in the community or at Girl Scout events, we practice the buddy system and expect all girls to follow it and stay with the group.

Girl Led Our goal in girl scouting is to help girls build courage, confidence and character. Our goal in girl scouting is to help girls build courage, confidence and character. We do this by having the girl scout program be a girl led program. Girls brainstorm and make decisions on what to do, what to work on, and where to go. If you are assigned as a meeting helper or trip chaperone, please keep this in mind. We provide lots of opportunities for learning, even things as simple as serving themselves from a pizza buffet line. We also try to limit the number of extra adults not needed for safety ratios. If you are not one of the assigned chaperones for a particular outing or meeting, we ask that you either drop off or make use of a different room or area in order to let your scout grow.

Girl Progression We learn from our mistakes, we grow from experiences This year looks to be an exciting one! Please be assured we will do our best to help the girls through progression exercises as we build up to these milestone events. We will work with all girls for proper progression and meeting them where they are. The troop offers many day trips, evening events, single night overnight, and this year we are branching out to two night overnights. Please talk to Karen or Jessie if you have concerns regarding your daughter’s progression.

Sister Troop It’s more fun when you are there

Since we want activities to be girl led we have paired with Jessie’s Senior troop, Troop 6252 to do many activities throughout the year. Her seniors will occasionally come and teach skills or be program aides at our outings and/ or meetings. Last year we paired with them to do several community service activities and are hoping to see them many times this year as well.

Parent Jobs We have many areas in which we will need help throughout the year

We ask that one adult from each family (mom, dad, grandparent, aunt, etc.) also register and complete background screening. We have many areas in which we will need help throughout the year and having these items completed at the beginning of the year makes for a successful year. Please see the attached list of jobs that are available and sign up for one or more! All leaders are volunteers who also have children not in the troop and who all work outside of the home. We really can’t do this all alone! Please also keep in mind that if you have signed up to help at a meeting or event, we are counting on you to fulfill our safety ratio. EVERY parent in the troop should take Troop Chaperone and Troop Driver training.

Forms We require the following forms to be completed and turned in at the start of each girl scout membership year or when changes need to be noted. All forms can be found on the group Shutterfly site. A) Health History Please make sure you fill this out completely and sign it! B) Troop Meeting permission form. There is one permission slip for the year for troop meetings. Events will have their own permission slip. C) Over the Counter medication form. These are common over the counter medications that we can not administer without parent permission. D) Product sales permission form for permission to take place in the money earning activities of Nut & Magazine sales and Cookie sales. E) Troop travel agreement which outlines safety measures when the troop is transporting girls.

/ Troop 1732 Parent Handbook / 2017 - 2018

Siblings We will make attempts to have family oriented activities throughout the year We recognize that many of the girls in our troop have younger or older siblings that might be interested in the activities the girls are doing. We will make attempts to have family oriented activities throughout the year that siblings can attend. During troop meetings and other events that parents may be serving as chaperones on, we ask that siblings do not attend. Leaders do have to make arrangements for their other children as well. This year there may be some instances where parent helpers/leaders may be able to have siblings attend on a case by case basis.

Communication A weekly e-mail will be sent out recapping meetings, events, and a prelude to upcoming activities. Permission slips and any other necessary paperwork may be attached to these e-mails as well. The group shutterfly site will be used to keep all up to date information. On this site you can view the troop calendar, download files (parent handbook, permission slips, other forms), see pictures of events, and even download pictures of your scout! Additionally, for outings that require an RSVP there will be an area to RSVP by clicking the yes, no, or maybe box. Please do so and change the box as your availability changes. We always need to plan for the correct number of adults and having an accurate count lets us do so!

Product Sales We will participate in both of the Girl Scout council fundraisers this year.

We will participate in both of the Girl Scout council fundraisers this year. At the end of September we will start our Nut & Magazine sales. The end of January begins our cookie sales. These are great money earning opportunities for our troop and we highly encourage all families to participate. Girls do receive recognitions for participation as well. Last year, the proceeds from our product sales paid for: Camp Elk, Zoo Snooze, Night at the Disco, Purchase of troop tents, partial funding of re-registration, service projects, fun patches, earned recognitions, Paint a Dream, a troop meeting art event, and more!

Girl Scout Traditions We learn from our mistakes, we grow from experiences There are many traditions that have been associated with Girl Scouting. To learn more about these, please see the applicable pages of your Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting.

Shutterfly Page We use a group shutterfly page to share photos, events, and information with everyone. We use a group shutterfly page to share photos, events, and information with everyone. There are sign-up lists for events, sign ups for things to bring, and more. All troop meetings can be found on the calendar and in the files section are permission slips and forms. Additionally, the troop roster is on the shutterfly site if you need to reach another troop member for carpooling, play time, etc. https://troop1732girlscouts.shutterfly. com/ If you need to add another person to the site (second parent, etc.) please let me know their email and I can add them as well.

What to wear/What to Bring For all Girl Scout events we ask that the girls wear shirts that cover their shoulders and close toe shoes. Many times we will be in uniform or troop shirts but for the times we are not, please keep this in mind for girls AND adults. We ask that girls bring a day pack on all events. A day pack is a backpack that contains, at minimum, a refillable water bottle and bandana. Different events may require more items. On overnight trips, girls will always be asked to bring a sleeping bag (rated to at least 50*, 30* is preferred), foam sleping mat, and dunk bag.
