WELCOME TO DOX:LAB

WHAT IS DOX:LAB ?

Dear participants of DOX:LAB 2013, It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to Copenhagen and to the DOX:LAB workshop at CPH:DOX 2013.

DOX:LAB was launched by CPH:DOX in 2009 as an exclusive cross-cultural program for a selected number of filmmakers from EU and from non EU-countries.

When we launched the very first edition of DOX:LAB in 2009, the idea was, and still is, to create a space where unauthorized cinematic forms can be explored and developed. By selecting a small group of international filmmakers to participate in an experimental film laboratory, we hoped to stimulate a dialogue-based, new aesthetic. We only dreamt of the success that the DOX:LAB films achieved during the last couple of years: being invited to prestigious film festivals around the world, winning prizes, being distributed in cinemas and broadcasted on television. I am proud to conclude that once again, it has been possible to gather a strong team of filmmakers, and I cannot wait to see what these carefully selected matches across countries and cultures will bring. Many thanks for accepting our invitation. We will do our best to make it an experience of a lifetime. Here’s wishing you all the best in the coming months.

Tine Fischer Festival Director 4

It is focused on training, project development and subsequent pitching events at international co-production markets, with the further aim of establishing an international network and long-term professional relationships. At the core of the project lies an actual match and subsequent production – a meeting of a European and non-European filmmaker. The filmmakers are – in pairs of two – invited to develop and produce a film with a development grant donated by CPH:DOX. A cornerstone for DOX:LAB is to develop new and alternative approaches to co-production by setting up new platforms for creative and economic partnerships. This is being pursued by finding alternative ways to enter new markets and building up relationships between EU and third-world production companies by introducing collaborative film projects with a focus on direct creative development for both partners.

PROGRAM On the following pages you will find a daily schedule of the DOX:LAB workshop-week. While the program is packed with exclusive master classes, inspirational talks and seminars, there is also plenty of time for you and your team partner to get to know each other and develop your project. At the back of the program you will find some practicalities regarding your stay in Copenhagen along with a map containing all relevant locations. The official DOX:LAB program runs from Thursday 7th to Friday 15th November. Whenever the schedule permits, feel free to take advantage of all the great films and events in this year’s edition of CPH:DOX.

SUNDAY 10.11.13

WHEN FILMMAKERS GIVE UP CONTROL

SCHEDULE

A discussion of films in which the filmmaker’s deliberate loss of control and complication of authorship is an aesthetic strategy. From Exquisite Corpse-style multi-authored work to Jørgen Leth’s ”The Five Obstructions” to recent trans-media pieces involving crowd sourced content and viewer disruption, the works discussed will point towards new forms for a fragmented, decentered age. This workshop will be conducted by Scott Macaulay – Editorin-Chief and co-founder of Filmmaker Magazine, the IFP’s quarterly publication and daily website covering the world of independent film.

A whole day for you and your teammate to get to know each other, develop ideas and work on your project. It is up to you where you decide to work together, whether you choose to go for a walk in the forest, stay in the hotel, find a cosy café in the city or use the facilities at The Filmworkshop. If it is the latter, just let us know a day before.

Among Macaulay’s producing credits are Peter Sollett’s Raising Victor Vargas, Harmony Korine’s Gummo and Julien Donkey Boy, Alice Wu’s Saving Face, Bryan Barber’s Idlewild, Jesse Peretz’s The Chateau and Tom Noonan’s Sundance Grand Prize-winning What Happened was...

CPH:DOX INDUSTRY DINNER

CPH:DOX INDUSTRY DINNER This year’s CPH:DOX International Dinner takes place at the restaurant Madklubben inside Tivoli amusement park, in the centre of Copenhagen. Come and join us for a fun evening!

12

Argentine filmmaker Lisandro Alonso is often regarded as one the most unique talents in contemporary Latin American cinema. In his rigorous, minimalist works, he combines the formal techniques of both fiction and documentary and most of the time uses non-professional actors. Each of his four mysteriously atmospheric films to date – La Libertad (2001), Los Muertos (2004,) Fantasma (2006,) and Liverpool (2008) – closely follows the daily life of a solitary man to signify a larger journey or inner quest. The seemingly prosaic activities – cutting wood, journeying home, searching for a theatre – become powerful allegories when set against vast landscapes, dreamlike sequences, cinematic manipulations, and soundtrack music. In a conversation with film critique and journalist Dennis Lim, Alonso will also touch upon the subject of his latest film in the making SIN TÍTULO (set to release in 2014), which is partly shot in Denmark, with Viggo Mortensen in a main role.

The uncertainty one experiences as a viewer while encountering the photographs and filmic works of Tova Mozard (1978) is related to the extent to which we are used to reading images and their contents. Mystery is a key element in her photographs together with the information that has been omitted. Although Mozard’s compositions are made up of decayed environments, film sets and bizarre characters making her photographs visually attractive, the viewer is left with a feeling that is both nostalgic and saturated. Mozard’s work reveals the nature of the relationship between the camera, the protagonist and the director. Sometimes relying on fiction and other times delving into her own biography, she takes on different roles in front of and behind the camera, testing the limits of directing and acting.
