Speaking with one Voice for Arts & Culture
ADD YOUR In her recent memoir, Roseanne Cash writes, “We all need art and music like we need blood and oxygen. The more exploitive, numbing and assaulting popular culture becomes, the more we need the truth of a beautifully phrased song, dredged from a real person‘s depth of experience, delivered in an honest voice; and the more we need the simplicity of paint on canvas, or the arc of a lonely body in the air, or the photographer’s unflinching eye. Art in the larger sense, is the lifeline to which I cling.” On behalf of the Cultural Alliance, thank you to each of our constituents for your link to that lifeline! Whether we perform or we live to appreciate the arts in all its forms, we understand that it is through that discipline where we find ourselves, our ability to reason and think as individuals. Congratulations to the 2010 ALLI Award recipients, and indeed to all of those nominees we honored in November. Our region is a better place because of what you do. You have built this region into the Arts Capital of Virginia - a $ Billion industry – and half of that economic impact is right here in Hampton Roads. The arts give back more than they receive. And the support of special arts friends plays a huge role in sustaining that industry. Those who are 2010 recipients of the ALLI Award, and since 1987, continue to provide Hampton Roads with the creative support that adds to our region’s quality. Most of you get periodic news alerts
VOICE to our work….
and newsletters from us, communicating current trends and achievements in our arts institutions, but also, often asking for your help in sending messages, like the one mentioned above, to those who can help sustain the industry. While these are difficult times, we know that the arts are part of our economic solution. We welcome your support of those efforts. Our work at the Cultural Alliance is designed to enhance and grow creative communities – advocacy, technical assistance, networking opportunities, research and publications, along with support for arts education. Arts and culture helps communities to thrive and we urge our supporters to help us send that message wherever it will have positive impact. We are encouraged by the groundswell of support for our mission. If you haven’t joined our cause, we invite you add your voice to our work, an ongoing movement of great value to our communities.

Ever since the merger of the Peninsula Council for the Arts and the Southside Metropolitan Arts Congress in 1983, The Cultural Alliance of Greater Hampton Roads has been stimulating the cultural activity through Arts advocacy with local business; city governments; regional partnerships and members of the General Assembly. Membership in the Cultural Alliance strengthens organizations and unites the arts and individual artists through an improved understanding of regional development, research and best practices. Members benefit from the work of the Alliance through arts advocacy, informational forums, networking and a comprehensive website: www.culturalli.org Join the efforts that support and unite the arts and cultural industry throughout Hampton Roads. Contact Tracie Hughes, Director of Membership - tracie@culturalli.org or 757.889.9421. The ALLI awards were first presented in 1987 to recognize businesses for their support and in 1992 expanded to include individual volunteers and the media. In 1993 the Vianne B. Web Lifetime Achievement Award for arts professionals was added and most recently the Bettie Minette Cooper Arts Educator Award in 2005. Our own BRAVO! magazine which launched in January 2008 was the ALLI Media recipient that year and capped a wonderful turnout of local support for the Cultural Alliance. The next award ceremony will be held as the 25th Silver Anniversary. A committee of volunteers is now forming for what plans to be the Premier event of the year: the 2012 ALLI Awards for Cultural Art Achievements in Hampton Roads. To all of you who were nominated in 2010, to the Cultural Alliance and to the ALLI award committee headed by Nancy Rhode of Hampton, and of course all of our sponsors, contributors, friends, volunteers, Todd Rosenlieb our Master of Ceremonies and the TR Dance Company, your leadership and your passion serves as a beacon for us all to follow. I look forward to the years to come as we all together strive to make Hampton Roads the most sought out destination for Cultural Art.

The 2010 ALLI Awards It is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2010 Alli Awards at The American Theatre, a landmark in Hampton Roads. Originally built in 1908 as a “high class motion picture and vaudeville house” the theatre has enjoyed a colorful and varied history. This is the only remaining of four theatres in Hampton. 2010 marks the twenty-third presentation of the Alli Awards. The Awards honor the many individuals, arts educators, arts professionals, businesses and the media whose tireless efforts make arts and culture a half-billion dollar industry in Greater Hampton Roads. Today’s nominees provide diverse experiences for both residents and visitors. They contribute time, talent, resources, leadership and creativity to make Hampton Roads a lively and vibrant region. From world class museums to international authors; from award winning visual artists to outstanding instrumentalists; from professional theater and choral ensembles to communitybased theater and choral groups; from glass artists to fabric artists; from historic sites to computer-generated images our region enriches and nourishes our daily life. Our host city sums it up “From the sea to the stars.” We live in the midst of abundant arts and cultural opportunities. Regions with vibrant arts and culture climate experience cultural tourism and a community where businesses thrive and new businesses and industries emerge. Creative, talented people energize the workforce with innovation, and the competitive advantage is strengthened. The arts do more than entertain, inspire us, and nurture the soul, they create jobs, promote a stronger more skilled and creative workforce while generating tax revenues and building communities both culturally and economically. To each of the 2010 Alli nominees, “Thank You” for your time, energy, resources, creativity and your willingness to give of yourself. To each of you in attendance today and throughout the year, “Thank You” for your support, encouragement, and dedication. Together we ensure that future generations know from whence we come, and who we are as a people. A quote from Teddy Roosevelt best describes life in the world of arts and culture: “Far and away the best prize that life has to offer is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.”
