This thesis will explore the unbuilt works of American architect, writer and theorist: Lebbeus Woods (1940-2012). A key project titled ‘Berlin Free Zone’ conceived in 1990 by Woods for the reuse of an abandoned government block in reunified Berlin will be the main focus in this exploration. (See figure 01). ‘Berlin Free Zone’ is a project concerned with occupying left over spaces within existing structures after conflict has taken place. It derives from Woods’ obsession with the themes of war, architecture and memory.
