Throughout the month of November, there are two separate events that occur to raise awareness for cancer: No-Shave November and Movember. Movember, a mash-up of the words mustache and November, was created in 1999 by a group of men in South Australia. It began as a charity fundraising event. Since then, it’s become a national phenomenon across the United States, and it’s a great excuse to grow out your best ’stache. Could your boss really get mad if you told him/ her that your whiskered facade was for charity?
The goal of Movember is to “change the face of men’s health,” and it aims to increase early cancer detection, diagnosis and effective treatments and, ultimately, reduce the number of preventable deaths. There are now a ton of charities that you can join and donate to, and you can find them by visiting us.movember.com. No-Shave November is a sort of hybrid offshoot of Movember and is run by the American Cancer Society. For No-Shave November, participants are encouraged not to shave for the entire month of November,
to grow awareness by embracing hair, which cancer patients often lose. They encourage you to donate to the organization any money that you would normally use for grooming. The interesting part of No-Shave November is that women are also encouraged to participate, undoubtedly sending groans throughout the male community, as women are asked not to shave their legs or underarms. While that may seem a bit, um, “unwomanly,” many females from across the globe do participate in the event.

I did that every weekend. It got me familiar with being in front of people and working with musicians.” At age 12, she decided to pick up the mandolin and later began taking guitar lessons from a local musician named John DeFoore, who would mold the young singer/ songwriter into an expert at her craft. “My homework every week would be to write a song. tique it.” “When I first started writing my own songs, they were pretty bad,” Musgraves admits. “I hadn’t found my own voice yet. But it made me appreciate the creative process, and it made me better. I learned not to be scared to just throw an idea out there. “I had no clue how useful this would be to me when I moved to Nashville and signed a publishing deal. My ‘homework’ was essentially the same: write songs, bring them in, put them on tape and then have them critiqued. It’s the exact same thing John had me do.” She released her first album at the age of 18 with help from her parents and grandparents and headed to Austin. Soon after, she was chosen as a participant for the TV reality show “Nashville Star,” which ended up not really panning out as she left the show in seventh place. But it did introduce her to the city of Nashville and, before long, her bags were packed, and she was headed to Music City.
‘I’m just stoked that I get to wake up every day and do what I really love. As long as it lasts, I’m grateful.’ Musgraves sang on other artists’ demos to pay the bills as well as getting to know industry heavies and other singer/ songwriters. She even had some major labels on her heels and booked a few sessions with some well-known producers. She quickly discovered that wasn’t her thing. “What we did sounded like them, not me. It just wasn’t the right time yet. If you only get one shot to say something, it better be exactly what you want to say from the beginning, you know?” So she began furiously writing and honing her sound. It was during this time that she met Luke Laird and Shane
McAnally, two like-minded writers who would eventually become co-producers on her first major label release. So Mercury records came calling and released her album Same Trailer Different Park which they all co-wrote together. The album contains the award winning single “Merry Go ’Round.” Musgraves has opened for a lot of country heavyweights, from Kenny Chesney to Lady Antebellum to Willie himself. “I opened some shows for Willie Nelson in Texas. “Down there, that’s like Jesus coming back, you know? It was amazing.” And Musgraves takes it all in stride. She’s worked hard to get where she’s at but knows that there’s a bit more work to do to be where she needs to be. But that doesn’t affect her spirit one bit. “I’m just stoked that I get to wake up every day and do what I really love. “As long as it lasts, I’m grateful.”
