.... HAVE BEEN TO BARCELONA

5

During my trip to Barcelona I have found myself almost constantly with my phone in hand taking pictures. I was taken back by the amount of design and art works I photographed. And I found it fascinating that when I looked back at them they were mostly of signs. Which is something that I never pay major attention to when I am back here in England or Poland. Many of the works weren’t anything new or extraordinary but I still felt a need to photograph them. I guess I probably did it as I felt a need to document every single thing I saw in case I could ever use it as research for future projects.

... COLLABORATED WITH BEVERLY

12

Beverly is one of my closest friends that I met back in college. She’s also studying Graphic Design but at Bath so we do not get to see each other a lot. On her recent visit, she stayed over at mine and somehow when we ran out of things to do I decided to ask her if she wanted to try out and work on some patterns together. This was at 1 am and by 4 am we had 26 A4s full of illustrations done by both of us. We set one simple rule while making them. Each of us gets a turn to draw on the paper but we were only allowed to draw one thing, we then keep going until we decided that there isn’t anything else we could add to improve the image. It was a fun experience, unlike with my university work this had no rules or boundaries, if we messed up we kept that mistake and worked with it. which is something I don’t usually get to do when working on my university work as if I do end up making a mistake I force myself to start from the beginning. I really wanted to incorporate these illustrations in some works of mine so I made a decision to use some them throughout this publication on the tittle pages but I still hope to make a zine with just them in it at some point this year.

... MADE A FEW COLLAGES

15

16

At the beginning of the summer I felt like I was missing something and that thing was having to constantly work on something. I tried to force myself into making a few collage works since that’s what I’ve been doing the least throughout my projects. I gave myself no boundaries the only limit was what I was working with. I didn’t want to spend any extra money on it so I gathered leaflets and free magazines and any paper samples that I kept from last year. I only ended up making a few and they are not my best works but again like when I messed about with illustrations/patterns with Beverly I still enjoyed myself and the actual process of making them. I got to be messy and weird without needing to worry on anyone’s opinion on them. I didn’t manage to keep making more of these as it ended up being a bit boring after a while, but I am thinking of figuring out how to make this more exciting and entertaining for me so I could go back into it.

... GATHERED THIS FOR MY SUMMER PROJECT

19

My summer was almost perfectly split in two. One part was spent in England and the other in Poland. It took me a while to figure out what data I wanted to record. I didn’t want it to be simple like how many hours a day I spent listening to music or how many steps I took a day. I wanted data that will let me learn something new about myself. So I decided to record how many times I used English when I was in Poland and Polish when in England. My data included texting, calls, conversations with friends and family, Facebook interactions and even singing. The data was simply gathered on my phone, I had a notes file which I kept writing into almost constantly. Adding all my results together it came out that I spent 58.3% interacting in English and 42.7% in Polish. I really wanted to present this data in a way that made it obvious that this was very personal. While researching, I came across a lot of body paint typography and really wanted to try something like that out. At first I was going to paint and photograph a model but then I realised that it loses that personal feeling to it. So I decided the only way to keep that is to paint on myself. I was only able to do the higher percentage as it took me a while to find someone willing to help me out and someone I could trust enough with taking photos I would be happy with. I am still hoping to develop the body painting idea and have no idea what exactly my final piece is going to be yet.

... RESEARCHED THIS ON POLISH DESIGN

23

During my stay in Poland I tried my best to gather as much information on Polish design as I possibly could. I found out that the most popular design is product design and that the country is full of designers only focused on that. But that I not part of my interests at all. So, I decided to visit as many galleries and read as much as I could on Polish art and design. The most obvious design works are obviously Posters. In fact, Warsaw is mostly famous for its Poster Art School which even now is considered a big influence to most Polish designers. I decided to focus my research on that. Through that I came across Henryk Berlewi who’s work amazes me to this day. When I saw one of his works in the national art gallery I was taken away by how simple it was but how impressive the full outcome is. But obviously one designer was not enough so then I tried to look into packaging. And I came across packaging of matches during the WWI and WWII.

24

So many were produced (not just in Poland ) that now there are collectors of these who are willing to pay BIG to expand their collection. The packaging was always simple – couldn’t use a lot of different colours as ink was expensive and hard to get. Also, the illustrators of the packaging are unknown to this day. Some well-known artists at the time have been said to work on them under a different name but none of the designs were signed or labelled by them so we will never know who created what. Currently I am reading a book on Polish 20th Century design and I am hoping to gain more information on the history of Polish design and hopefully new artist to look up.
