1. Compost at Home Over 60% of what we put into landfills is organic waste. Composting at home can be easy and in turn reduce landfill waste, produce rich soil for gardening and avoid unnecessary pollution. I will investigate ways to educate and encourage people to compost at home. SOURCE: HTTP://EXTENSION.PSU.EDU/PLANTS/GARDENING/NEWS/2013/SOME-COMPOSTING-FACTS

2. Plastic Bag Ban Plastic constitutes 90% of trash floating in the ocean. Banning the use of plastic grocery bags locally could help reduce plastic pollution globally. I will propose ideas on how any small town, starting with Greenville, South Carolina, can ban the use of plastic grocery bags.

3. How to Music Festival as a Family With parenthood, going to live music shows can seem an elusive thing of the past. Music festivals catering to the whole family offer a way for parents to continue enjoying live music alongside a clean, kid-friendly atmosphere. I will compile information and ideas on how the whole family can love a weekend-long music festival.

4. Cleansing Made Easier There’s little social acceptance and encouragement towards cleansing through diet in my community. The majority of social interactions revolve around food/drinks and sharing a meal. I want to explore possible ways in which one could undertake a cleanse and still be able to socialize.

5. Running Partners Running has proven to have many physical and mental benefits. Dogs are perfect running partners: They’re always ready to go, they eagerly keep pace, and they never complain about being tired. I will consider ways to pair dog-less runners with rescue/shelter dogs. SOURCE: HTTP://WWW.OUTSIDEONLINE.COM/OUTDOOR-ADVENTURE/DOGS/THE-10-BEST-DOGS-FOR-RUNNERS.HTML

Each year approximately 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide (380 billion in the U.S. alone), of which less than 5% are ever recycled. It is precisely the durability that makes plastic bags so useful and convenient to humans, that also makes them so harmful to our natural environment. Plastic Matters is an organization working towards reducing global plastic bag pollution. CREATIVE BRIEF

Potential Stakeholders STAKEHOLDER #1 » City and State Environmental Departments throughout the US recognize the toll pollution places on city budgets. Plastic pollution, in particular, permeates urban and rural areas within every city’s jurisdiction. A reduction in plastic bag pollution could translate into substantial decreases in yearly operating expenses. STAKEHOLDER #2 » Marine Wildlife Advocates support a social context without plastic bag pollution as a result of the tens of thousands of marine animals that are killed every year from plastic bag litter. These animals often mistake plastic bags for food, such as jellyfish, which prevent normal food digestion and lead to very slow and painful deaths.

» Healthcare Providers, for the most part, understand the extent to which exposure to toxins derived from plastic can affect people’s health and quality of life. Because plastic never biodegrades, as it decomposes into smaller and smaller pieces of plastic, animals within our food chain are ingesting it at an alarming rate. We, in turn, are eating these animals. This consumption may be introducing a number of pollutants like PCB’s, flame retardants, and polyaromatic hydrocarbons, all of which are found in plastic debris, into our own bodies.

STAKEHOLDER #3

Allied Organizations There are many organizations in existence that deal with and address plastic pollution worldwide, both in marine and rural settings. What differentiates Plastic Matters however, is a specific commitment to plastic bags. Plastic bags are the tipping point to a monumental global problem. And, they are not indispensable. By eliminating plastic bags from our daily lives, we not only begin to alleviate the problem, but we also begin to reconsider seemingly meaningless every-day choices; choices that can in fact change the world. Allies to our cause include:

SUB MESSAGE #2

Disposable plastic bags are not indispensable. Plastic bags frame an experience that can be easily reconstructed with alternate, more sustainable, and less harmful materials.

Plastic bags are destroying our environment, killing land and marine wildlife, adding to our demand for oil and ultimately poisoning our own bodies.

Lifestyle changes may be difficult but are not entirely impossible. By choosing to eliminate single-use plastic bags from our everyday lives, we begin to address a critical global problem. SUB MESSAGE #1

Every single bag matters. Because of their ubiquitous nature and longevity, every single bag that is ‘thrown away’ will ultimately affect us.

Today, there is a wide range of reusable bag options available on the market. Reusables are heavier and more durable bags constructed to have a longer life. Often, they are made of more than one material to give the bag added strength and durability, and sometimes also a more appealing look. Each different material or fabric carries its own advantages and disadvantages. While it’s true that manufacturing and shipping reusable bags has an impact on the environment, all woven choices are far more environmentally friendly than the alternative: single use paper or plastic bags. High quality bags are often better for the environment in more ways than one. So, how do you know which reusable bag material options are best for your needs? We’ve prepared this guide to help you in your decision.

Cotton bag options vary and include traditional cotton, organic cotton and recycled cotton. Organic cotton is grown without pesticides and is typically certifi ed using global standards. Recycled cotton consists of reclaimed organic and traditional cotton scrap that would typically end up in a landfi ll. The material is then reclaimed or spun into new yarn. Traditional Cotton production involves a raw, natural fi ber, but requires more chemicals than any other crop. Cotton canvas reusable grocery bags have been a popular choice throughout history because of its many advantages.

Hemp grows well without pesticides or fertilizers and is drought tolerant. Each acre yields three to six tons of dry fi ber. Hemp fi bers are one of Earth’s longest, strongest and most durable fi bers and are several times stronger than cotton.

› Soft, smooth and pleasant to the touch › Widely available in the USA and abroad › Can be machine washed with regular laundry › Cotton provides the ideal ‘canvas’ for logo printing on reusable bags. Most cotton bags are screenprinted using spot (solid) colors. DISADVANTAGES

› Not moisture resistant unless chemically treated › High water consumption crop › Traditional (non-organic) cotton accounts for 16% of the world’s pesticides › Heavy, bulky and expensive to ship › Wrinkles and shrinks when machine washed. Screenprinting inks fade over time

A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO FABRIC & PLASTIC BAGS

› Most hemp reusable bags can be machine washed and dried › Hemp gets stronger over time and ‘breaks in’ nicely when used frequently › Hemp can be blended with other materials to make highly desirable, high end fabrics with texture similar to linen (hemp is typically blended with cotton, or recycled PET) DISADVANTAGES

› Currently cannot be produced in US (hemp products in the western world are imported) › Can be expensive › Can be grainy, though most is refi ned. › Refi ned hemp uses a fair amount of water

WORKING TOWARDS ELIMINATING GLOBAL PLASTIC BAG POLLUTION.

Approximately one million disposable plastic bags are used every minute across the globe.

Only two percent of plastic bags are ever ‘recycled’ in the United States. But actually, plastic bags are nevery truly recycled, instead they are downcycled into other plastic products that themselves can never be recycled. It is much cheaper to just make a new plastic bag.

That translates to 150 bags per year for every person on earth. The average family accumulates 60 plastic bags in only four trips to the grocery store. © 2014 PLASTIC MATTERS, LLC. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. PH. 864.415.6226

PERSONAL CHANGE FOR GLOBAL IMPACT

There are 50,000 pieces of plastic litter floating in every square mile of ocean on earth.” Plastic bags never biodegrade. No natural process can ever break them down. Instead, they photodegrade, meaning they break apart into smaller and smaller pieces of toxic plastic particles that contaminate soil and water, and are expensive and difficult to remove. In landfi lls, it can take up to 1000 years for a single plastic bag to break down.
