style All in a day’s work. As a visual communications student minoring in graphic design, I spent a significant amount of my college career learning what—scientifically and psychologically—makes an image pleasing to the eye. Is it balance? Pattern? Proportion? Well, yes. And well...not quite. Sometimes an image derives power from emotion rather than set design principles; it evokes feeling through lighting, textures, contrast and context. As the creative director and stylist for Garnet & Black, I combined all these traits to create accessible yet fashion-conscious editorials. University of South Carolina was not known for wild style, but we pushed it as far as the Board of Publications let us push and created some of the most high-fashion editorials G&B has published in its 15-year span. The following pages contain every shoot I directed for the University of South Carolina lifestyle magazine and include short descriptions of the creative process. I had a blast concocting these editorials— forging stories, finding backdrops, picking clothes, and directing photography—and am proud to share the final product with you.

Glamour was the main objective for the final style editorial of my undergraduate career. Excluding one staff brainstorming meeting, I coordinated this shoot alone in three weeks. Collectively, we dreamed a vintage-inspired weekend getaway, full of pool-lounging and planeriding. However, no one had any idea where to get permission to shoot on a tarmac, let alone find a retro private plane to borrow. Securing a willing airport, locating a luxurious inn, and revitalizing a lonely pool became my challenge. The managing stylist disappeared the week before the clothing pull was scheduled, and her responsibilities became mine. Unaccopmanied, I asked stores for permission to borrow, then canvassed the racks for gems. Meanwhile, I emailed, called and visited people at possible locations. A week later, the shoot went off without a hitch. We arrived at the airport just before the owner of this University of South Carolina-themed airplane took off, so I seized the moment and asked for a snapshot. It became the first fashion cover G&B has published in four years.

You never forget your first! The previous images depict the first editorial I helped organize for Garnet & Black. Together with G&B contributors Christian Barker and Molly McNutt, we contrived a story of old school pals and platonic love during winter vacation. After receiving approval on a finalized story board, we turned to finding models, getting props, and securing locations. Featuring more male than female models was a purposeful reach towards the masculine side of our audience. Although I was present at the clothing pull, I was absent from the styling session, and did not style the majority of the looks save for final adjustments featured here. This crop sweater hat boots combo was my favorite look to style that day—I became particularly fond of this hat. garnet

An abstract theme like color-blocking gave us the freedom from sticking to a story line. Androgyny gave us the excuse to inject color into men’s wardrobes while challenging what a male South Carolinian can look like. To stick to the theme—and because our male models were too small for regular men’s sizes— we put them in women’s pants. Following Spring trends like slim ankle-high trousers and thigh-high shorts made the task much easier, and tangerine tango, this year’s Pantone color of the year, made for wonderful color palette inspiration. Our female models were petite and athletic, with strong brows and marked jaw lines. They exuded fortitude and femininity, so we opted for looser silhouettes that contoured their shapes without stifling their curves. The studio was a nice change of pace from multiplelocation shoots and offered great lighting control, which made post-production pretty much pain-free. I designed the layout with Illustrator, Photoshop and Indesign, using Christian Barker’s colorized images of a quarry nearby for texture and contrast.
