Calorie Walks in Wrexham’s Country Parks Alyn Waters and Tyˆ Mawr Country Parks are perfect places for a healthy walk. A number of routes at these Country Parks have been professionally surveyed to measure how many calories are used to walk them. This leaflet gives details of routes together with their calorie count. The number of calories you will use by walking depends on the path surface, the hilliness of the route, your weight and the distance walked. Coloured footprints mark each route on the maps, and a round calorie disc tells you how many calories you will burn, for your body weight, for each route. It will make no difference how fast you walk or how long your legs are! The Country Parks are great locations for healthy activities. At Alyn Waters many miles of cycle path make cycling safe and fun. The park also has a specially designed orienteering course, orienteering packs are available from the Visitor Centre. Both
Parks have trim trails, ideal for an outdoor workout. Tyˆ Mawr has a BMX track for the more adventurous! For further information on activities in Wrexham’s Country Parks:

Calorie Walks in Wrexham’s Country Parks Is a 200 calorie walk worth it when the energy could be replaced by one cream cake? But imagine you added five walks each week to your normal activity. That is 1000 calories a week or 52,000 calories a year which means nearly 15 lbs. of body fat. It all adds up! Isn’t walking too easy? Shouldn’t I join a gym and exercise hard to get fit? It depends on how fit you want to get! If you want to get fit for sport then yes you do need to work hard. But the major health benefits of exercise can come with relatively mild exercise as long as you do it regularly and do enough. My legs are short. Will I burn more calories because I take more steps? Unfortunately not! You might take more steps but each step is shorter and needs less energy than the longer steps of a taller person. It all pretty much balances out and leg length makes only a tiny
difference to the energy required to walk. How much exercise do I need? The latest scientific evidence shows that health benefits will begin if you accumulate at least 2,000 calories worth of exercise a week, or do 30 minutes of something active at least five times a week.
Will I burn more calories if I walk fast? No. It is the distance that matters not the time. If you walk faster you will burn calories at a faster rate but you won’t be walking for as many minutes. Happy walking!
