The Gem Hotel

The Gem upgrade derived from strong underlying principles of mid-century design, with subtle 1950’s references to soften some of the hard edge forms. The simplicity that is evident in mid-century design allows the existing and new elements coexist easily.

The main bar and restaurant are designed as two complimentary entities, separated by a glazed timber shop front, with continuing reference to a 1950’s aesthetic. Traditional decorative details are paired with contemporary elements to create a unique space.

The interiors for the Gaming Room further develop mid-century design principles, with the introduction of breeze blocks and vertical shiplap timber boards. From the outset the intention was to provide a light space with contracting darker tones, featuring gold reflective materials to provide a casino like experience. The result is a dynamic space that features a beverage focused bar and sports entertainment space.

Mermaid Beach Tavern

Located along a section of the iconic Gold Coast Highway, the Mermaid Beach Tavern is a stunning reinterpretation of an existing building. The front portion of the building has been replaced with clear, simplistic forms, creating a new integration with the streetscape. The large portion of the existing which sits behind was retained and has been refurbished to allow for a more seamless connection between the old and new forms. The new exterior has been wrapped in a screen veil, providing glimpses of the treasures within while providing protection.

The internal spaces offer a direct connection to the environment, with natural sun light and natural air flow enticed to penetrate. The extensive height, use of natural light, monolithic brick finish and abundance of planting make this a unique space.

The different levels and spaces each offer a contemporary vision. The ground floor presents a large centralised bar and a feature kitchen that is defined by a wall of display, acting as a backdrop. Monolithic brick finishes within the courtyard space flow throughout the ground floor, which features earthy and natural materials. A centralised ceiling feature was introduced to draw patrons through the entirety of the space, becoming somewhat of a visual discovery.

The lower ground floor floor focuses on gaming with a high end and sophisticated experience, and the external sports bar outdoor area has been upgraded with a contemporary steel awning structure and abundance of perimeter planting.

Union Place Hotel

The Union Place Hotel offers a contemporary interpretation of the classic American diner. A dramatic bar occupies central place in the room, custom blue stained timber paneling and brass halo lighting imposing a strong, masculine presence. The coffered timber ceiling with its exposed metal fittings and dark walnut stain emphasises the strength of the design, which is then softened through the introduction of plants at key points in the room. The Bistro incorporates booth seating, inspired by the quintessential American diner experience.

PKD explores a new approach to a traditional “red, white and blue” colour palette throughout the Main Bar and Bistro. In the Gaming room, darker hues take over, complemented by a dramatic feature ceiling and brass mirrored columns. The custom carpet is a unique non-repeat design, which further develops the moodier colour tones of navy and gold to red.

The outdoor area is a contrast to the dark, strong interior. A lighter colour colour palette of blues and yellows is applied through playful and bold patterns. Fairy lights create a welcoming ambience at night, while strategically located plantings juxtapose the striking geometric patterns of the exterior tiles.
