Entering into the station, the passenger experiences the rhythmic and repetitive motion of the structural elements supporting the vast glazed canopy, which rise aspirationally to form a voluminous space directing passengers subconsciously towards the station concourse. The rhythmic nature of the structural elements is a deliberate and direct visual response to the sensation of rail travel, which is designed to promote a harmonious expression of movement, articulated by the juxtaposition of solid and void, light, and shadow. Movement, rhythm and circulation play a critical role in the design of the new transport hub, both as a conceptual approach to the experience of rail travel, and as a pragmatic response to the site and the station’s link to the city. The existing bus and train station are located approximately 1.5km from each other creating a natural barrier to a successful public transport system. The new transport hub brings the two stations together to form a homogenous transport network linking the critical functions of a city together. This design proposal is led not only as a conceptual approach to the experience of rail travel, but as a design solution to reconnect the transport hub to the city and reinvigorate the Abercrombie Plan. Images 1 & 2 are shown to demonstrate both the experience of space under the vast glazed canopy and the dynamic rhythm of structure repeated through the transport hub. The image below gives an impression of the station as the passenger enters by rail.
