Paul Maye Beyond Appearance

_ Artist’s Statement Having graduated in Fine Art [ Paint & Printmaking ] my work has evolved into a more conceptually driven practice with the choice of medium being determined by the concepts or issues I wish to explore. My work to date across various media including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, and radiography, while diverse in range is united through an ongoing exploration into the nature of perception – appearance versus substance. I am specifically interested in the visual tension that is created when the work highlights a conflict that often exists between visual and intellectual knowledge - between what we see and what we know.

_ Beyond Appearance Project Outline The Beyond Appearance project was carried out in the Radiology Dept of University College Hospital Galway in September 2004. During the six-week residency I worked on a series of cast sculptural objects that were specifically designed to be X-Rayed. Many of these objects contained embedded items that could only be revealed through radiological imaging. Once X-rayed, these works frequently displayed a visual tension or conflict between an object’s outer appearance and what lies within. Other pieces took familiar graphic representations of mortality, love and spirituality and translated them into sculptural objects which were then X-Rayed. I was particularly interested in how these familiar graphic icons become transformed through this process – eg. while a arrow through a heart makes for a rather sweet graphic ‘Hallmark’ symbol of love, the same image represented as an X-Ray is something quite different. Through my exploration of the unique properties of such a powerful imaging medium I had to adapt my work practice as a visual artist to focus more on the substance of an object and less on appearance - what it is made of as opposed to what it looks like. The medium itself acted as a metaphor for a recurring theme within my work; an exploration into the nature of perception and, particularly with this work, the desire to get beyond surface appearance. Presenting these works in a medium synonymous with diagnosis heightened the probing nature of my work with many of the final pieces titled in the form of a question.
