Editorial A warm welcome to the 2015 edition of our Club’s Northern News. I have taken over the role of Editor from Nicola Ketley and hope to provide a Bulletin that is both relevant and informative for members of the Club. Given we live in a technological age the use of web sites has become all pervasive in providing information that is accessible by everyone and from anywhere. That said I am sure members also enjoy the added benefit of a ‘hand-held’ record of the Club’s activities. It is appealing to retain copies to refer to as a personal record and also to make notes upon. Anyone wishing to submit articles or letters may do so by using my contact details below and I welcome contributions. At a time when many clubs are feeling the ‘pinch’ regarding entries and the recent unfortunate (and inaccurate) news reporting in regard to events at Crufts, I am sure all members remain committed to supporting our shows and promoting our beloved breed.

NORTH EAST BULL TERRIER CLUB Minutes of Annual General Meeting 2015 Wednesday 4th March 2015 – Springwell Social Club Meeting Opened 8.40pm Apologies: Mr Allenden, Mrs Allenden, Mr Moody, Miss Williams, Mr Hawksford and Mr & Mrs Wannop Mr Chairman offered the floor to the club’s President Mr Ramshaw, Mr Ramshaw declined the offer but opened the meeting by thanking everyone for coming to the AGM and for making the shows a success. Minutes for 2014 A.G.M. Read and Adopted. It was proposed by Miss Finley and seconded by Miss Ketley that the Minutes of the Annual General Meeting held on the 5th March 2014 be approved and signed by the Chairman as a correct record of that meeting; agreed unanimously. Secretary’s Report I would like to start by thanking the committee for the hard work, time and support they have given to the club. I’d also like to thank Charles and Valerie Allenden for their continued help at all the shows. As previous our entries have stayed the same and our shows are still very well attended with a very friendly atmosphere. It is very good to see that the club has done well last year looking at the accounts figures let’s hope this continues. The club is holding a breed specific seminar 16th August 2015 at Bowburn, I would just like to remind everyone if they could to support the club at our match nights with the Staffordshire Bull Terrier Club as there always seem to be a lot more Staffords th than Bull Terriers. The next match is the 6 May 2015 at Birtley hosted by the North Eastern Staffordshire Bull Terrier club. Once again I would like to thank everyone for their support over the past year. Thank you. Stephanie Wheatley (Hon Secretary) Chairman’s Report First of all I would like to thank everyone for attending our AGM this evening, I would like to thank all our hard working committee for their help and support over the past year, with special thanks to Charles and Valerie Allenden for their continued support at our shows as always greatly appreciated. I would like to wish all our members all the very best of luck in the coming year, and look forward to seeing you all at our shows. Stephen Wheatley (Chairman)

Treasurer’s Report Firstly I would like to thank everyone for their support they have given the club. This year the club has made a good profit of £684.77 as we know this is partly due to our championship show but this is still very good, as in previous championship show years we have only made minimal profits, which just shows the club is doing ok. Ms Aistrop asked if we could have more of a variety on the stall to see if this would bring more interest and revenue for the club, it was explained that the stall had been discussed in one of our previous meetings and it was decided to leave the stall as it is for now until we have sold off the existing stock and then assess this at a later date. Mrs Moody has agreed to do the club accounts again for next year. Stephanie Wheatley (Treasurer)

Election of Committee Officers Mrs S Wheatley – Secretary unopposed Retiring committee are Mr C Wannop, Miss C Williams, Mr M Chapman, Mr B Hawksford, Mr S Patterson. All unopposed and elected for two years. Agenda Items Mr C Hewitt joined committee and elected for 1 year Mr Marley Proposed – Mr Ramshaw seconded Mr Chairman welcomed Mr Hewitt to the committee. No other business will be transacted at this meeting. (At the discretion of the Chairman) The Chairman thanked everyone for their attendance at the AGM Meeting closed 9pm

Puppy Dog Entries 2 Absentees 1 1st BAYSHUCK BAKER'S BOY AT SEITTOR (MRS S & MR D I LAMBERT) White with a decent head could do with a bit more fill under the eyes, nice round bone with good feet. Showed in first class condition and handled to perfection. 2nd OFF THE CHARTS (MRS P & MESSRS C & L WANNOP) White boy. Another very well balanced short coupled chap. Good length and profile to his head, would like a little more fill to complete a very nice picture, mouth just off, good bone and substance. Very good quarters front and rear. Moved well both ways. NEBTC – Open Show 2 November 2014 Judge: Mr Charles Allenden I would like to express my thanks to the Committee of the North East Bull Terrier Club for this invitation to judge their final open show of the year. The unseasonably warm weather made this a very pleasant day for exhibitors and spectators and I was pleased with the quality of my winners. As a general observation, the incidence of ingrowing canines been addressed since the last time I judged and mouths in general are much better with a very limited number of undershot mouths. Movement is generally wide in front and close behind and feet are a cause for concern with many not as described in the breed standard and in particular toes on the front feet being misaligned. However, top lines and movement from the side are generally good with shoulder placement also much improved. Minor Puppy Dog Entries 1 Absentees 0 1st ALIZARIN BLACK CRUSADER (MS & MRS E & C WILSON & STEPHENS) Black brindle with good head shape which should continue to fill. Quo vadis? There appear to be rumblings and whispers and social-media posts all asking the same question: where is the breed heading? Two possible reasons behind the question relate to the drop in puppies being bred/registered and also the drop in Bull Terriers being exhibited. Here are some basic figures to help the reader to understand the foundation of this debate:

Year 2014 2013 2012 2011 2010

Total Litters Bred 313 373 434 477 515

Total Puppies Born 1551 1805 2109 2264 2458

Comparing births in 2010 and births in 2014 there has been a reduction of 907 puppies being born and 202 fewer litters; a steady decline. In regard to Championship Show entries and using the Kennel Club’s figures, it is possible to determine an average entry per show between 2006 and 2014 (this is achieved by totalling entries for all Championship Shows of each year and then dividing this figure by the number of shows in the year).

Year 2014 2013 2012 2011 2010 2009 2008 2007 2006

Entry 48 47 49 47 52 56 71 62 69

So calculating, somewhat roughly, there has been (from 2006 to 2014) a drop of 21 entries per show. Even at its high point between these years the entry was averaged at 71 in only one of those years, no great number for Dogs and Bitches. People within the breed are understandably concerned. We all know that as a breed Bull Terriers have had a dazzling career starting from Hinks’ development in the th 19 Century. The late David Harris wrote the encyclopaedic book Made in Birmingham (2012) detailing the breed’s history and its trajectory.

So why are we seeing such a drop-off in entries? I am not suggesting - a point I make emphatically - that such demise is due to the character of the judge or his/her ability. Such a suggestion would be rash and possibly unfounded to the point of causing offence. The reduction in numbers is evident across the board in the years identified, irrespective of judge and therefore not the sole responsibility of one individual. It is one thing to identify a problem, but the cause(s) may be various and a solution has to tackle these causes to deal effectively with the problem. How accurate one is in identifying the causes therefore becomes central.

Perhaps it is also worth mentioning a possible third reason that of the global financial crisis which began in 2007/8 and caused economic and social problems for communities and individuals the like of which had not been seen since the days of the Great Depression of the 1930s. As homes were snatched back from mortgagees and jobs were lost, businesses collapsed and fuel prices became eye-watering; the nation lost confidence, adopting the understandable strategy of trying to ride out the storm and cut back. Dog breeding and showing was viewed as a luxury activity and the residue of such shaken economic and social confidence may be reflected in the figures quoted above. Speaking of earlier times we must not forget that society in this country has changed radically. If one looks at early photographs and write ups from dog events we see a society that is hardly recognisable to modern day eyes. As technology and the world in general has sped up lifestyles have become infinitely more complex with competing attractions and where dogs are treated as disposable items with rescue centres bursting at the seams. Now that a more manageable pet passport system is in place and quarantine laws relaxed the doors, principally, to Europe are wide open. There is competition everywhere. There may yet be a fourth reason that is closer to home. Even allowing for the above, surely breed clubs should be seriously asking themselves: are we doing enough to promote our breed and our club to attract new people? Do clubs have a designated member to meet and greet new faces, to make them feel genuinely welcome? Are there sufficient attractions to becoming a member other than reduced entry fees? How are children catered for at show events? Is the level of hospitality of a sufficient standard at each show to make the day memorable? Are special events held to promote health awareness, handling classes for novices, what to look for in assessing the quality of a Bull Terrier, to name but a few? In June 2014 Andrew Brace wrote an article in Dog World, the full text can be read by following this link: http://www.dogworld.co.uk/product.php/117056/, which he entitled The root cause of exhibitors’ dissatisfaction. It is an interesting article where Brace’s main arguments begin with shows from the past which were vehicles for breeders to view ‘stock’ and so make decisions around their own breeding programmes, and which stud dogs were available. Those people were very much of the ‘stockman’ background; traditionally those used to managing livestock. Today, he writes, there is a pronounced emphasis upon the social aspect of showing with the earlier focus diminished. In addressing what he sees as the declining entries in shows it is useful to quote him exactly: Having read the opinions of so many exhibitors over the past week I am convinced more than ever that the root cause of dissatisfaction is the lack of impartial judging and too many awards being made for the wrong reasons. We do have some excellent judges in this country, both breeder-judges and those who award CCs in many breeds, who are known for walking into the ring and doing an honest and knowledgeable job but sadly they seem to be in the minority. And Justice must be done and must be seen to be done but the more we expect the exhibitors who are viewed as nothing more than cannon fodder by the people at the top

(who were all once rank novices themselves remember) to have their noses rubbed in it by game-playing, rule-bending and dishonest judging, the less we can expect new people to join our wonderful hobby and stay with it. One is at liberty to agree or disagree with Brace’s arguments and conclusions and also to decide whether his generalised analysis can be related to Bull Terriers at all. Yet the facts are speaking for themselves in the records of the Kennel Club for Bull Terriers and other breeds. Is it simply a matter of society having ‘moved on’ and the inevitable reality is that dog breeding/showing is becoming more than ever before a niche activity? Or is a practice of denial and a ‘head in the sand’ prevailing with the hope of better times? My hunch is that it may be a combination of factors described above causing the decline. That said it must be the committed aim for all breed clubs to direct their energies in the most positive manner to build a grassroots, committed membership and also to go above and beyond what might be expected. Judging must be principled, coherent and inclusive right up to putting the full stop against the last word of a well written critique. We often speak of our dogs as being ambassadors for the breed, now is the time that we should also adopt this role for ourselves and so begin to turn the tide. Paul Moody odyombt@aol.com
