REGGAEXCLUSIVE VIEWS
JULION VIEWS canadianreggaeworld.com riting for this ReggaeXclusive magazine has been a pleasure as well as an honor, being able to vent my frustrations and opinions to a varied group of reggae lovers as well as reggae participants, especially here in Toronto. Many of the pervious articles were experiences shared with others yet they were still mostly my thoughts. This time around, I received lots of help from a varied group, as I asked, “what would you like to talk about?”, and many people had many things to say. I would firstly like to thank those participants as they shared comments on various things and seemed to have an underlying theme.
W
My first quick question to every artist who reads this is, “Why do you write and record music?” I will come back to that! As in any and every genre, there are good and bad artists. I have heard first hand from fans as well as friends who say, “I will not spend my hard earned money on any of these local artists performing, just because they are Canadian!
Nuff of dem stink and as Chronixx says, wi tired of mediocre!”, as I paraphrase my friend Reggie (Godfrey Dewdney). That sentiment has been verbalized to me on a few occasions from others as well, so as a community, how do we ‘police’ and get rid of the unentertaining talent so that the good talent can better sell the genre? How do you tell folks that have been performing for years that they are not entertaining, or should we have to? Do we outright stop booking these folks on shows? Well, the point has been raised! The information is out there. Let’s see how we go forward from here. We touched on the negative, now we touch on the positive. The numbers of gifted and talented artists that perform and live in Canada are also a great number. Get past the stigma of the soft performer and to showcase properly, those that need to be seen and heard. Here is where I revert to an analogy that I heard from a friend and a long time contributor to reggae music, to the music industry overall, Jeffery Allen Holdip! Look back to the videos of the Sattalites and Jeff will be there. Behind the sound board at the Bamboo, the Opera House or any live venue, Jeff was there. As a producer of “Luge” a comprehensive reggae / dub album featuring the likes of Gregory Issac and other contributors, Jeff did that. The point is, he is a voice that I listen to and he said, “we need our own bakery!”. “Bakery”? Good metaphor! That’s a better description than the word that I have been using, “infrastructure”! Jeff’s thought is for a more cohesive approach by many
of us within the genre, elevating the truly talented, hard working artists to prominence. Listening to Odel Johnson, drummer, percussion, artist and Patrick Roots, Reggae Riddims CIUT 89.5fm every Wednesday night, Sandra Sylburne, promoter most awesome, they seem to be speaking the same language. All spoke passionately about developing where they live in all aspects of the business. We seem to have a bit of a blame game going on all over the industry. We all have opinions of whom or what is causing our “failure”. It seems to be everyone else but the person giving the opinion. Our problem is the face in the mirror folks. You! Me! Many have and will continue to make money bringing international artists into Canada for concerts, yet we truly have great artists performing here and we have not showcased

ourselves effectively enough in order to consistently develop, maintain and grow this thing year after year after year. Keeping this December version short and sweet and to the point so I revert to the point I asked above to all my artists out there, “Why do you write and record?” Back in the day they used to say, “It’s about the song son, that song!” To me, it isn’t meant to be about a single tune, it’s about your song in life. Your contribution is the entire body of work. All of us have the same mandate. Life is our loooong song! Your music helps us through our day, week and our moments in time, to uplift, relate to, sing along and share with the world. No one writes a hit song every time! No one is asking for that. The general consensus is that we have a waiting fan base that loves to be moved. As good food is for nourishment, it is music that is food for the soul. Stay tuned for 2014.

climbing ever since. It’s a song that is breathing a breath of fresh air in reggae music especially as it relates to how we picture entertainment. We are talking about reggae artiste Exile Di Brave new single “Rasta Party”. From the moment the song hit the airwaves it has been getting serious pull ups and requests. It is dominating the dancehalls, the clubs and even taxi drivers play it daily to the point of rewind by daily commuters. It brings renewed vision to what Jamaicans have spoken about on numerous occasions about bringing back the love at musical presentations. At home and abroad people recalls how ‘man and woman’ use to dance together and have a good time at sessions, until recently, it has taken a different trend where men and women are oftentimes singled out at parties and everyone is wondering what’s going on. Well, those concerns did not fall on deaf years. Exile Di Brave is to the rescue with his new hit single “Rasta Party” which was released in January 2013 complimented by a video. Both song and video has been getting multiple rotations on radio and television and

The song tells of what takes place at a ‘Rasta Party’- dismissing the perception of ‘slackness’ and confusion that’s affiliated with parties. Exile Di Brave takes you on an incessant journey from the beginning of a “Rasta Party” to the end; highlighting the therapeutic results experienced by patrons. In one of his verses it says “conscious reasoning, knowledge we a crave….bring yu children cause wi song dem naw fi edit, our session it no need no ambulance and paramedics…” Stressing the importance for parties to be uplifting to one’s spirit, the song glorifies the good of how people can enjoy themselves in a positive way when it comes on to entertainment. It further places a focus on the cultural messages, displays, healthy food, reasoning, clean content music and the natural vibe that emanates at a conscious party, which separates it from the immoral and ‘unedutaining’ environment that is damaging the music industry. Like water that flows from a fountain quenching the thirst of the thirsty, so is this new hit single “Rasta Party” by the artiste Exile Di Brave. It is available on itunes, soundcloud and the video can be seen on YouTube.

Fancy Lady is a humble, down to earth individual who is always motivated and driven in achieving any goal put forward. RX: How did you come about your name Fancy Lady as I understand that you started out with your original name Christine Williams and then transitioned to Lady Fancy, then to Fancy Lady. Please tell us about these transitions. FL: Christine Williams is my birth name, however at one point it was a group of us back in 1998 and we called ourselves the Fancy Face Crew. When we all separated every one kept Fancy. That’s when I added Lady in front of Fancy for myself; then realizing, there’s a lot Lady this, Lady that out there. So I switched the name
around and now I love it, Fancy Lady. RX: We know that you are on the verge of releasing your first single. What is the name of it? Who produced

RX: What are your thoughts on reggae music in Canada and worldwide? FL: In Canada, I think it could be promoted more, not just on selected radio stations and dancehall club scenes. Worldwide,

FL: Some of the challenges I face being a new artist is first, being a female we are not taken serious enough and two, it’s hard to find a producer with the capability to complete a project. REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S CHAT UP CLOSE WITH AURESIA RX: Greetings Auresia, how long have you been in the music business, when did you first start singing and why reggae? Auresia: Wow, music has been a part of my life since I was a little girl. As I mentioned I grew up in a Ukrainian musical family, and my parents would have dinner parties where everyone would sing. They would get me and my brother Chris to perform for their friends. I have been singing since I can remember as it was always a passion of mine, in church, choirs, school concerts, and when I was 16 I bought my first guitar. This was the turning point for me when I began songwriting. A couple years later, I was traveling with my guitar in California and stumbled upon Reggae on the River (Reggae Rising) and I was completely blown away by the music and vibe of this phenomenal 3 day reggae festival next to a fresh river. The amount of love at this festival transformed something in my soul and it was a turning point as I completely fell in love with reggae! I began to vibe and write on more reggae grooves, and it became evident and more present in my songwriting. My tropical self was awakened! Since then I have recorded my first selftitled Album “Auresia” released in late 2008, and have been performing Reggae since. RX: When did you release your first single? What was the name of it? Who produced it and which studio did you work out of?
Auresia: My first real release was “Jah Goddess”. I released it in 2007. It was produced in a home studio with amazing multiinstrumentalist David Lines in Montreal Canada.
Mark Zubek, Toronto, Dave Beatty (QED Media), Hamilton, Tim Dub, Montreal and Jamaica, and even had the opportunity to record my salsa track “Quiero Bailar” i n
RX: We know that you have recently come back from a tour. Where did you go, and tell us a bit about your journey. Auresia: Yes, I had the opportunity both in 2012 and 2013 to tour in Latin A m e r i c a , Colombia, Peru, Chile, Ecuador, B o l i v i a , Argentina and Brazil.
RX: Do you write your own songs? Who or what inspires you to write your lyrics? Auresia: I do write my own music and songs and have also had the opportunity to write with different artists and songwriters more and more, more evident on my sophomore new Record “Risin’!”. On the new record, I had the opportunity to write with Omar Rosell Martinez (co -writer of Justin Beiber’s “Pray”), Mark Zubek, Kali ‘Hayes” Thurton, David Lines, and more. RX: You recently released your sophomore album entitled “Risin”. Please tell us about the making of the album, who are some of the people you worked with, and what are some of the challenges you faced in the making of this album. Auresia: Yes, this album was a trip to make. I had quite a few songs ready to go and wanted to produce them with different producers to fully capture my artistic and other worldly flavors that I so love, including salsa, flamenco, pop, soul, etc. I had the opportunity to record with SmokeShop Studioz, Toronto, PHS Entertainment, Toronto,
think it is really a blessing to be female in the industry as there is also a lot of respect for what I do. I’d like to see that the industry is evolving and making more room for diversity.
Havana, Cuba. Each track on the album has a worldly and different flavor and I am thrilled with each one of the songs on the album! RX: As a female artist in the business, what are some of the challenges you have faced so far in your musical journey, negative and positive? Auresia: Wow that is a good but difficult question to answer. Sometimes as a woman, I feel I am not taken as seriously and have to be strong to deal with egos and the general sliminess of the music industry. But at times I

RX: What is your future plans regarding your musical career? Auresia: My dreams are big and vast, but I am taking things day by day. Combined with my plans of touring and spreading my music internationally, I am awaiting for my opportunities to unfold and will flow in the direction of Jah will. I will be promoting my new record “Risin’!” and have plans of touring the USA, South America this Winter, and Canada this summer. RX: Anything you would like to add? Auresia: Check out the sites! struggle, freedom and spirituality. In “True Love” the crooner shares his story of love and loss and the hard work of moving on from a broken heart. Meanwhile, in “Michael Jackson Tribute” Ras Tesfa’s admiration for the greatest entertainer of all time, mixes dub poetry over synthesized sounds. Despite an early start in his career and celebrity ties, the reggae artist and father says his music serves a higher purpose. “We are losing the youth today because of gang wars and turf war, and music is supposed to get the youth together, give them a sense of purpose so they can value themselves and their lives. It can change their way of thinking, and give direction. That’s what music did for me.”

REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S CHAT A LOOK INTO THE LIFE OF INT’L. GUYANESE ARTIST YONNETTE HOOPER RX: Greetings Yonnette, you have such a long history in music, first off, please tell the world where you were born and where you now reside. YH: Great seeing you, my sister. I was born in Georgetown Guyana. At the time of my birth my Father, and Mother (The late great Eddie Hooper (Berbician) and Icil Hooper (Demeraian)) lived in Durban Street Lodge, in Georgetown. As you can see, I’m a city girl. Presently, my musical career brought me to the USA. It has been my home for the past 13 years. RX: We know that you started singing at a really young age, in a nutshell, tell us at what age and why you started singing? A short history into your life as a young singer/performer, and who your Father was. YH: At the age of 5, if my memory served me right. My father started grooming my older sister, and I. Being the kind of father I had, who is my greatest influence, I could not dream of being anything else, than a singer. My first recording was at age 6. My sister Karen and I were taken to GBS (Guyana Broadcasting Radio Station). We did the lead vocal in “Way O Down in Guyana”. One of the songs, from the book of songs my dad wrote for Guyana Broadcast to school. My father was a s e l f - t a u g h t
musician/genius, in my eyes he is one of Guyana’s highest rated musician, God had ever created. There is no-more like him to walk this earth. My father kept us kids involved in everything musical that he did. My first big show appearance was at age 9 with the Police band in Bell-Bag, Bellfield, Guyana. This was a performance for the Late President LFS Burnham, followed by my fathers’ home coming concert in Linden. At the age of 14, I formed a Dance/Art/Drammer group on the West Demerara, and we did shows all across Guyana, we took part in fund raising for elections, etc. I migrated to the UK 1990 to pursue a career path in Nursing. What I found was ironic, when it comes to getting involved in art, that’s where my heart was. It took me no time in becoming a part of one of the largest travelling musical pantomimes in Leeds UK. I did poetry reading in Libraries for the young kids, took part in the 1991 carnival, the costume I carried placed 3rd. On my completion of my studies, which was computer science instead of nursing, I returned to Guyana 1995, did one show time performance with the Sherriff deputy, the band my sister was a part of, and found myself in a place of no turning back. Hence my professional musical career was born officially. RX: Knowing also that you and your sisters had a group that performed all over Guyana and was very
popular nationally, tell us a bit about that group. The Hooper Sisters I think it was called? YH: On the passing of my father in 1996, in keeping his memories alive, My sisters Karen, Cydanzie and I, came together as a
team, discussed it along with my brother Jules Hooper who was sought by Eddie Grant for one of the songs he had released called “TV Molester”, with the help of Mr. Felix Walker met and had a meeting, we were given full sponsorship for our launching, which the first showcase was held in the National Cultural Center and the rest was history. I must say, although presently we all are wrapped up in our own musical career, ever so often we reunite and do a

grand performance, like the one you saw in Guyana 2009. RX: When did you migrate to America and why? YH: On my fathers’ passing in 1996, my then 16 year old sister and 18 year old brother, was facing a rough time in the USA, I was also with a touring band, one of the most outstanding string bands of all time in that era for Guyana. I was given an opportunity to tour with that band in 2000. For me that opportunity was a blessing in disguise. At that time I was dealing with a lot. My father was my strength, despite the fact that I was raising three children on my own as a single parent. Juggling three jobs in Guyana musically and the money even though a lot, was not enough for me to be in a position to keep my children in school. I had to make a hard choice, stay in Guyana and live pay check to pay check, not knowing where the next meal coming from, or make a sacrifice and in the end be in a position to see my children attend university. I went for the gamble of touring with the band and like the saying goes, ‘jump ship’ (stay in the USA, and get myself sorted out), so I did. (To be continued in March 2014 Issue)

REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S CHAT UP CLOSE WITH JAHSMIN DALEY RX: Greetings Jahsmin, tell the world who Jahsmin Daley is, where she was born, how long has she been in the music business, why reggae and when and why she migrated to Canada. JD: I am a spiritual person, from youth. I try to approach life looking at the heart of the matter. I don’t believe in the coined phrase “business is business” when it is a cross between human needs vs. profit. I have been blessed with the gift of motherhood, with three loving, wonderful, growing young men. I believe I am here, we are here not to just fulfill wants and needs and go out well off, but to share in the blessings the Almighty creator has blessed us with, however small or insignificant they may be perceived. I write because of love, I feel that what I feel and when I feel, others are feeling it too. I was born in Clarendon, Jamaica in a town called Lionel Town. I have been sharing my works on the entertainment scene since 2002, but officially in the music business since 2006. Why not Reggae? I love Reggae! Reggae is food for the spirit and soul; it is the cry of the people, for the people, by the people, and I stand on the side of the people. In my song ‘Chasing Rainbows’ I sing about this world is not our home, we got to go on the journey road, keep on keepin’ on. I believe with all of our pursuits in this material world, we must always strive to be conscious in our awareness of what are our basic needs, rights,
freedoms and what is really important to our well being. Reggae brings and shares a universal message relating to life for understanding, human rights and social justice, peace, healing, strength, progress and so much more. It calls for the cure, which is love. Reggae cries for love. Bob Marley delivered that message, and we must continue to resonate it through the healing music of Reggae. I migrated to Canada at the age of 6 with my parents who were practicing Ministers, who had already been abroad years prior, establishing a home for their six children, in hopes for more opportunities and a better life in Canada.

RX: We know that you joined forces with LA Allen and MEMP musically, please tell us a bit about that. JD: Working with L.A. Allen and Mountain Edge Music Productions, has helped me to grow. Edge has been a beacon along this journey. Expressing much thanks, to L.A. Allen of MEMP, and MERCB for support on this journey. RX: You have recently finished production on your latest single "Chasing Rainbows", please tell us about the making of the CD. JD: The song ‘Chasing Rainbows’ came on a vibe, right out of Mountain Edge Music Studio. We were working on some beats for new music. This one beat, just hit me with a vibe, I connected with the vibrations of the music, the message of the song flowed, and the song was created. ‘Chasing Rainbows’ was produced by Mountain Edge Music Productions. The first take was created out of Mountain Edge Music Studio; however, we did utilize other studios throughout the process of refining to mix and master. Reflex Music Studio, Slamm Music Studio, and I Feel Music Studio were all a part of the process. I have gained a greater sense of spiritual awareness and strength from the experience of this production, Reggae speaks in my songs and the message is for everyone, for spiritual oppression resides in high and low places. There is empowerment in this song. I encourage everyone to embrace their own strength from my song, and live spiritually well. To be continued March 2014 Issue
