SCREWDRIVER

Born Dalton Lindo in 1960 in the parish of St. James, Jamaica, Screwdriver was inspired by the dancehall singers Pinchers, Pliers, Spanner Banner and Tenor Saw. In the mid-80s he went to Kingston where he met Beres Hammond, who encouraged his musical aspirations. Screwdriver began his career in 1986, recording the hits ‘We Rule’, ‘Soundboy Killa’, ‘Family Counsellor’ and ‘Here I Come’. In 1989 he topped the Jamaican chart with ‘No Mama’, which became a major hit throughout the Caribbean and inspired many DJs to mimic the chorus. Following his success, Screwdriver toured America and Canada before settling in Florida, USA. Further hits followed, including ‘Reggae on Broadway’, ‘Learning the Ways of Love’, ‘Roots And Culture’, ‘Teach Dem’ and ‘HIV’. By 1995, influenced by the music of his domicile, he blended R&B and hiphop Jamaican dancehall rhythms, a sound that he demonstrated on “Calling Calling” for the Miamibased Ikus label. The album featured ‘She Too Young’, ‘African Woman’, ‘Got to Be Love’ and ‘Selassie Live’.

As a longtime participant, sometimes promoter, poor web designer, party dancer, writer, fan of the reggae genre, it has always befuddled me that selling the 'reggae product' to a Canadian public who is aware of the healing powers of this mystic music has never really hit levels of profitability for the vast number of those involved within the genre. I have critiqued community radio personalities for not cooperating to produce a national reggae chart thinking that would be one of the things we needed, showing pride and collective love hence enticing fans to feel the same eventually. There are individual charts currently yet still no cooperation among the personalities. I AM NOT BLAMING those on radio just seeking opportunities to elevate and that would be a good way. But it is not 'the' solution, just another cog in the wheel. It'll take several steps in order to achieve a profitable goal. I have opined about lack of infrastructure amongst ourselves as we have never and will NEVER be included in NXNE or CMW and I am still not sure what winning a Juno does for the Canadian artist in any genre! So if these avenues aren’t available to us, what have we created for ourselves? The Canadian Reggae Music Awards, TIRMA, ReggaeXclusive Recognition Awards are / were areas where the industry

congratulates its people and is a necessary thing to glorify one’s self! Yet along with that, we need to create ‘commerce’! Selling, exporting, performing and making two cents doing it. Yet I do encourage and thank Donna Makeda and Prince Everald for taking the time to appreciate and to uplift many of us with the ReggaeXclusive Recognition Award show. I repeat these things hoping to encourage the right person / response / solution. It hasn’t worked yet but I’m keeping the faith. The other touchy subject is artists, bands and performers that perform in Canada. There is a stigma that those who do it here are watered down shells of the real thing going on in Jamaica. The consensus by some is that the ‘Canadian reggae artist’ is lame. Is that actually true? Can any artist living and performing here pull the same crowds as a Tony Rebel or any of the Marley sons and so on? Is it lack of marketing on the part of the promoters or are the artists just not any good? Should this be a question posted to fans or to the artists themselves? Feel free to respond! I have faith in many that perform and spin music here in Canada. What is evident is our lack of cooperation promoting each other.

For instance, if Donna is doing a gig then I, Friendlyness, Fingazz, Cyborg, Tonya P, Korexion, Kidd Rasta and EVERYONE connected to the genre should take the time to post up Donna’s or Friendly’s or Humble’s or Blessed’s or Steele’s or Tony Anthony’s gig! Instead of it being a single person doing it, we have 50 - 100 people talking about your show. Also, artists have to support each other’s events by showing up and PAYING cover. We can ‘moneytize’ ourselves. Some wonder why the fans don’t come out to their shows yet I have hosted many shows and been to a few and many artists never show up for each otherís shows. If we don’t patron each other’s performances or take the time to promote each other’s shows, why should the fans show up for us? It seems like we do not respect ourselves. I know none of this is new or remotely earth shattering information yet in our 50 years of existence in Canada we have NEVER had one of our artists tracks played on mainstream charts! At this point we should consider taking the word ‘Canada’ out of our language as we do not fit theirs...or go against the insurmountable odds and create something really special. Who will that be?

HEY REGGAE,

By: Delroy Special Mix Holness Why are you leaving us? How are things with you? You are looking a little sad lately, have you not eaten well? Why do you have your suitcase, Reggae, are you leaving us? I have not seen you for a while, where have you been? I keep seeing your nephews, Hip Hop and RnB on the TV. When I asked them where you were, they just laugh and say that you have popped down and that youíre out of touch with the times. Is everything ok at home? How is your wife Roots and your children Dancehall and Ragga? And howís your Dad Ska and Granma Mento? I remember when we were young, I used to love sitting down and listening to what Mr. Ska had to say. I gained so much wisdom by just listening to how he would rhyme and intertwine those words to that fast pulsing beat that he used to make. Hip Hop and RnB use to just walk by and say that I was wasting my time, but I enjoyed all that Mr. Ska had to say. Hey Reggae, what happened to your teeth? You have so many missing? If the dentist is too much for you, then why do you not get together with all the artistes that made money through your name and get a group insurance, so that you all get a group discount? Blender returned to music in the early 1990s when Garnett Silk, who had also worked with Destiny, introduced him to record producer Richard Bell, who signed him to his Star Trail label. This time around, Blender achieved success straight away, with “We No Jus’ a Come,” becoming a hit in Jamaica. Blender’s success spread to the United Kingdom where his first album “Lift up Your Head” reached number four on the Black Echoes music chart. The title track from the album was nominated for a Jamaican Music Award. Further albums and singles followed, with his early singles from the second phase of his career collected on the album “A Piece of da Blender”. ReggaeXclusive chat

TONYA P

ReggaeX: Greetings Tonya, thank you for taking the time out to chat with us. First off where was Tonya P born? Tonya P: I was born and raised in Toronto. So tell us when you released your first song, what was the name of it and who wrote and produced it? My first song was released in 2005; it was written by me and produced by Radford Ettienne. Who are some of your musical influences and why? My influences growing up were Bob Marley, Marcia Griffiths, Mary J Blige and Faith Evans to name a few. I was always in love with music from a very young age, I loved R&B and I grew up with Reggae surrounding me my entire life. Wow, that’s a good thing, I’m sure it helped mould you into what you have now become, a great reggae singer. So what plans do you have for the future musically? I’m currently working on my first album which I plan to hopefully release before the end of this year. I’m hoping that following the release I can start doing some traveling promoting the album in other Countries. I’m sure you will Tonya. Tell us who you have worked with musically and who are some of the producers and artists that you will collaborate with in the future? I have collaborated with a few artists in Toronto such as Sample King, Fire Lion and Eyesus. I’m a fan of Canadian talent so there are other artists based in Canada that I would love to work with. I have always wanted to do a collaboration with an artist based in Jamaica such as Taurrus Riley, Busy Signal, Queen Ifrica, too many to mention. I have good links with the Big Ship family and I think that Stephen ‘di Genius’ McGregor is a very talented producer that I would love to work

with. At the end of the day I would love to work with any producer that has a great sound that can bring the best out of me. What are your thoughts on the reggae music industry in Canada and also worldwide and what do you think can be done to make it better? I think that the Reggae Industry in Canada has come quite a long way since I came on to the scene. There is a lot more that I would love to see happen that I think would benefit the artists and the Reggae Industry as a whole. I think it’s important that we show love and support to our artists so that they can get the motivation and strength they need to excel in this Industry because it is not an easy thing to do. I also think that Reggae music is in a recovery state right now. It took a dip in the wrong direction but finally its making its way back to where it needs to be. Reggae one drop, culture and lovers rock will never die. As for me I will continue to make music that my children, parents and grandparents can listen to and feel proud. Tell us something about Tonya P that we don’t already know. I never wanted to be an artist, I loved to sing but I was very shy..I struggled for years trying to write a song and the reason why it was so hard for me was because I was listening to what was popular and I was trying to follow that instead of what I was feeling. The lyrics had no feelings because they were not my own. The day I decided to write about what I was feeling, the pain and hurt, was the day that I wrote my first song that turned out to be a very popular song that led me on the path that I am on today. As much as I still remember those hurt feelings

I am thankful for them every day because that was the turning point of my life and how I became Tonya P. So sorry to hear about your hurt and pain Tonya but I guess in a weird way, it also helped to make you what you are today. Please give some words of advice to the upcoming reggae artists. My advice to an upcoming artist is to take your time and promote yourself in a professional manner. Being a musician is not all about being on every big show and making a lot of money. Take the time to perfect your craft and you will reap the rewards. Think about the music that you’re creating; lyrics are very powerful and have great influence that can be either positive or negative. What kind of influence would you like to be? Don't be afraid to give your music to anyone and everyone that either plays music on the radio whether it be community stations or commercial stations or music sound systems. Not everyone is going to like everything but keep making the music and put it in their hands. Someone is bound to play it and if they don't? No hard feelings. But don't stop doing what you love. Thank you for taking the time out to chat with us Tonya, we at ReggaeXclusive wish you nothing but success in your musical endeavors. One love and blessing.

Greetings Empress Divine, we have been following you for quite some time now and have seen your progress over the years. For the people who don’t know you as yet, please tell us where does Empress Divine hail from and how long you have been in the music business? First, thanks to the Most High for creating each opportunity, also, respect to ReggaeXclusive for the great support. I hail from Toronto, Canada but born of Jamaican decent and from birth I have had a love for music but have been in the music business for about 10 years strong. Over the course of time I have worn many hats singing, deejaying, selecting, song writing and singing background vocals for various artists until I started putting out my own material.

I because of his soul, passion and lyrical consciousness. However, when it comes to musical influences like Marcia Griffith, Burning Spears, Etta James and The Abyssinians I can go on and on because I have learned to love and appreciate all different genres. And that’s a good thing when you are in the business, to appreciate all genres, you learn a lot from that. So what plans do you have for the future musically? Currently I am in the studio recording an album which is scheduled to be released in fall 2013. It will feature songs such as Natty Haffi Grow, Jah Live’s, Mi Nuh Like, Mama Africa, Let Me Know ft Fire Lion, Sensimellia and Stop The Violence just to name a few. With this album I plan to take it to an Wow, that’s a lot of hats international level and give my sis, so when was your first listeners a new fresh sound. song released, what was the name of it and who wrote and Who have you collaborated produced it? There have been a lot artists uniting as one so I hope of musical influences that I to collaborate with artists have looked up to such as such as Chatta, Queen Ifrica, Lauryn Hill because of her Donna Makeda and Tasha melodic voice and the way T in the near future. of good music to come. Tell us what your thoughts are on the reggae music industry in Canada and worldwide and what you think can be done to make it better? I feel that there can be potential growth in the reggae music industry in Canada and worldwide, by members of the community supporting local artists, giving them an opportunity to advance in their career, so they can be recognized on a global scale. This is for your fans Empress, tell us something about Empress Divine that we don’t already know. I attended George Brown College and studied as a personal support worker. Currently I work with disabled Canadians that have mental and physical disabilities assisting them to receive a Disability tax credit from Revenue Canada. I also attended a Disc Jockey school called Scratch Lab and received a certificate where I perfected the art of mixing and blending music. I have a love for fashion and design and hope to have my own clothing line in the near future.

your feelings about this. I was absolutely overwhelmed with the response I received from releasing this track. Stop the Violence aka Brap Brap was on the Rebel Vibez countdown for 25 weeks straight and it went # 1 for 8 consecutive weeks until it got vaulted as a hit. It also went #1 on DJ Cool’s radio program on 100.3FM in Kitchener and is currently getting radio play in Europe, Ghana, New York and Canada. Thank you to all of my fans, friends and family who voted for me and continue to support my musical career. Tell us about the making of the single, who wrote it, produced it and what inspired the recording. Music lovers like songs that they can relate to with a catchy riddim behind it, so when Ras Demo from Inna Mi Yaard Productions approached me to voice on his riddim I instantly said to myself this riddim bad and I had to do something on it. With all of the gun violence that is happening in and around the city I felt it was suitable because everyone young or old can relate to it in some way shape or form. I wrote this song to spread a message of awareness to the world that violence is not the answer, we must live in love and unity and strengthen our self as a people. Big shout out to Ante from Abstract Productions who mixed and mastered the track and to Donna Anderson for her sweet background vocals.

Those are some good achievements and great goals for the future, I respect that sis. So please give some words of advice to upcoming reggae artists. I would strongly advise any upcoming artist to strive to succeed and focus on accomplishing their goals. There will always be negativity & obstacles in your way but have faith in Jah and you shall rise above it all. Also learn to take constructive criticism for it will help you to develop your craft. We know that you had huge success with your single “Stop the Violence aka Brap Brap” which went #1 on the Rebel Thank you, ReggaeXclusive Vibez chart for quite some Magazine wish you nothing time; tell us but success in your music career. 11

HEART OF PRODUCTION PROMOTION

EMPRESS &

Heart of Empress is a Canadian based Record Label that also deals with Event Promotions and Artist Management. The Founder/CEO of Heart of Empress is Jan G. She told ReggaeXclusive that she came up with the name Heart of Empress because to be able to work with her and be a part of her team, you have to have a clean heart and be a team player. She also said that Heart of Empress is about giving a small artist an opportunity to grow and to get their music out there. Heart of Empress is building bridges right now from Canada to Jamaica and globally. Heart of Empress recently started working with well-known reggae artist Mikey Melody to promote his new album “Back & Belly Rat”. Level up the Music is also working alongside Heart of Empress internationally. With two major shows already under their belt, the first one featuring Ninja Man and Teddy Bruscshut which was a collaboration with Chop Chop Studios, and the other featuring Sizzla and Pliers, Heart of Empress’s next major show will be staged right here in Canada. According to Jan G, “each time we stage a show in a different country you will see a flag added to the Company’s logo”.

The other goal that Heart of Empress has is to work at getting the Canadian Artists out there in a big way so their music can be heard worldwide. “For many years I’ve watched the industry and the artists try and take one another down instead of working with each other to rise up”, said Jan G. “I see music as a blessing not a competition. For a lot of artists out there it all becomes about money and who is better than whom, not the blessing they really have. Some forget where they came from, no disrespect to anyone but some of them just get caught up. Everybody have to eat food but don’t always let money get in your way, there are way too many bad minds out there. If I can help one artist get out there I am happy with that. I wish the very best to all Artists, please don’t forget where you started, and remember that hard work and dedication will pay off, many blessings to all”. is now out and available on iTunes and Amazon. It took a little longer than planned but it is well worth the wait. This is an internationally voiced compilation album with cultured and “positive minded” artists lending their expertise and raw talent. This may be our best album to date. The riddim was inspired out of a personal tragedy which stirred up emotions within. Emotions of worrying about the health of a child and hoping and praying for a positive solution to the situation, with late nights and looking towards heaven for a message and finally getting the personal triumph with a positive answer. Everything happens at the right time and moment. The artists felt the emotions in this riddim and each in turn have given you Confusious. MR. “IT WASN’T ME” SHAGGY With a commanding presence, a distinctive voice that is recognizable throughout the world and titles such as artist, businessman, philanthropist and Grammy Award winner, Shaggy is and has been a forced to be reckoned with. Live Show Review Page Where

is the suport for

our foundation artists?

World Entertainment Omnimedia in association with Sunspot Records presented in Toronto the Reggae/Ska Explosion Vol. 1 at the Phoenix Concert Theatre on Saturday May 4th, 2013. I had the pleasure of attending the show, very excited to see one of my favorite foundation artists Big Youth. I was also excited to see the performance of Dennis Alcapone whom I had only heard about but not actually seen ‘live’. I anticipated a packed house with no breathing space, so to speak. I got there a little while after the show started. On approaching the venue, I could hear Willi Williams’ soothing vocals singing the very popular “Armageddon Man”. As I entered the venue, I noticed that the place was ‘scanty’ and I was quite surprised as this show was dubbed ‘the Reggae/ Ska show of the year”. I thought to myself “the night is still young, so maybe the patrons will come in later”. No such luck, I am not very good at guessing the amount of people in a crowd, so I am not quite sure how many people were in the venue in terms of numbers, but I do know that the venue wasn’t even half full. This was a great disappointment to the Promoters who figured that a show of such magnitude would actually have a sold out crowd.

A show of such caliber should have been better supported by the reggae community here in Toronto. The likes of Big Youth, Dennis Alcapone, Dawn Penn, Willi Williams and (Leon) Delroy Williams along with Jason Wilson Band, Dizzy & the Arsenals and the House of David Gang were present, this show was very well put together and well promoted. Yet, the support wasn’t there. It makes one wonder what is happening to the reggae music business in Canada. When a promoter goes out of his way to bring such huge acts into the country for the pleasure of the reggae community, cultural acts of high standard, it is a slap in the face to get such a poor response. Even the artists were disappointed at the turnout; they all did a fantastic show, a lot of high energy, popular hit songs and crowd participation was the order of the day. For all who missed it, you missed a great show that you probably won’t see for a long time to come. Kudos to the Promoters and crew for putting together such a stellar show, we hope that there will be many more to come. You guys have taken a great hit, but do not despair; there is hope yet for the reggae community in Toronto. ReggaeXclusive says big respect to Lynden Myers of World Entertainment Omnimedia for taking on such a huge task and mastering it.

“Good night and welcome to the label launch of IndieRootz Records’ it’s All Indie Rootz”. These were the words of the MCs Vibe Time and Deborah Harewood who opened the first segment of the reggae event at EB Club Lounge on April 20th. With a typical Montreal "late" start. The audience was entertained throughout the night by DJ's Little Thunder Sound and Ma Gash Intl. Liberty Silver started off the night in true form with some songs from her repertoire of music, which showed the audience the range her voice has and why this Torontonian has earned three Junos and a Grammy. Her song “All the Lovers in the World” is one of the songs from the latest album, Confusious Compilation. How often does an international artist and headliner start off an event! Brian Kotler and Garnett ‘Bobby’ Pottinger are the producers of the events and creators of Indie-Rootz Records. They realized how Montreal had some very talented artists and they both let the rest of Montreal know too. Dan Fiyah Beats, Juliet Nelson, Prophecy Izis and Aphtanan just to name a few of the Montrealers that graced the stage and had the crowd swaying and dancing to the music, as well as Dahlia from Toronto who started off her career in Montreal. Kya Kindu, a hostess of CKUT 90.3fm took the stage to introduce Indie Rootz Label Launch Donna Makeda, a Veteran Indie Rootz artist who was also invited from Toronto to perform. She thrilled us with a variation of songs which were all accompanied by her dance group performing behind her. The colors of the costumes and the gestures to the lyrics of Donna’s

songs added to the performance. They gave the audience a treat that was well received. Howard “Stretch” Carr, host of CKUT 90.3fm was happy to introduce for the last part of the show Skibu; a native of England and recently won two British Reggae Awards. Glad to hear that he has decided to make Canada his home. King I from Boston with his youthfulness was dancing to his songs and encouraging the audience to do the same. I must say the scene backstage was just as lively as the scene in front, most of the artists were meeting each other for the first time; but you can see the fellowship among them. It was as if they had known each other for many years. This is what reggae music does, it brings people together, music brings people together. Most of songs (and artists) that were performed for Its All Indie-Rootz can be found by a Google search of the artist, facebook or from ITunes and Amazon. Check out some of the photos from the show on Facebook (Indie Roots Records) and www. indierootzrecordz.com. With this show now finished both Brian and Bobby are already in the works on the next riddim compilation. Photos are by Sandi Destonis (Toronto) and by 2Phases Photo and Video Editing (Mtl). Reaching a milestone 10 years of programming on CHRY 105.5 FM "Rebel Vibez", has remained loyal to its movement and support of Canadian content. Over the years Carrie Mullings has been proudly representing artists but never has there been one as loyal as Elaine “Lil’Bit” Shepherd. Elaine being an independent artist has always been passionate about other independent artists of all capacities. “Part of what Rebel Vibez stands for is a movement against the notion that independent artists cannot grow and strive! Together we can build bridges

and create an empire larger than the mainstream!” says Elaine. "In this industry there is a lot of bad mind and jealousy that could easily be converted to more positive and uplifting energy. There is an almost blatant hypocrisy coming from the same song writers and music makers of the most conscious and uplifting reggae music?" said Carrie. In sharing with the world their Rebel Vibez “branding” which on a personal tip includes a sisterhood with a rare bond that has partnered the duo in business and in friendship. What initially began as a Manager/Artist relationship has evolved into an incredible movement that evokes love, unity, positivity and above all, the courage to be strong minded, independent and grounded with the belief that we all have the power to be ourselves and make a statement. PUGGY SIMEON Born in Montego Bay as one of 5 children Seymour Scott is the eldest son in his family. One very fond of his mom, he started early as a listener and “cheeky” boy who would soon find a home in the big city. As a former Calabar Old Boy, Latin class became the source for his now name “Puggy” (from pugilist) Simeon. He would grow up in the hectic city of Kingston Jamaica. During his years there he garnered foundness for the Sound

System and the diversity of the Jamaican radio airwaves. Some of his favorite moments included hanging with the Sound Systems the likes of Killa Tone Hi-Fi (out of Harborview), Soul Shack and Jammy’s Studio. These experiences he remembers well for the introduction to the artists who were sometimes on the rise. The list of artists is extensive with names like Tenor Saw, Nitty Gritty, Half Pint, General Threes and General Plough who were all honing their skills at the Jammy’s Studio hoping to make that break. Puggy was witness to these happenings. In 1977 Puggy started a spiritual transformation which continues to this day, he embraced Rastafari. This as many know was a challenge in Jamaica during these times as the choice to elevate from society’s isms was not always celebrated. This transition allowed him to be open to even more culturally, politically and socially-specific lyricism that was the staple of the day in Jamaica. Puggy journeyed to Canada and settled in Montreal in the early 80s where he started to play for the 12 Tribes of Israel Sound for the next 30 years. This experience brought him to the touring life, where along with Sounds such as Jah Luv and Jah Prophecy Hi-Fi they took England and America by storm. This travelling soundman with the Rasta vibration would later change cities for the fastpaced, diverse city of Toronto in 1997. Here he continued to command the sound-waves with 12 Tribes as well as his connecting with Stur Gav in

Toronto. Puggy, also an avid record collector can be found recommending chart toppers or show stoppers to buyers in record shops like his former Records International (in Montreal) and DJ’s Records (Spanky’s) in Toronto. Currently, Puggy is enjoying what he always wanted to do, play music to a mass audience on the radio. He is now host to “Reggae’s Golden Staircase”, a weekly showcase of Reggae through the Golden ages to now. Each Thursday morning from 4 am to 7am listeners on CHRY 105.5 F.M. are treated to this accent of good music. You can hear him in Toronto on 105.5FM and numerous other outlets, for international listeners you can hear him via www.chry.fm . Listen to Puggy and learn more about the music and the eras they represent.

KES THE BAND Kees Dieffenthaller began playing in a group at the end of 1990, focusing on reviving popular hit songs including current reggae and soca. Since he had an amazing vocal range, stage presence and an uncanny ability to mimic popular artists, Kees quickly created a buzz and attracted a loyal following. On the strength of this momentum, Kees formed his own group in 2005 with the intention of composing his own music. Along with his brothers: Hans (drums), Jon (guitar) and his best friend Riad Boochoon (bass), Kees was able to realize his aim of working with a band, writing his original material and subsequently gain international appeal. For starters, the group has released three albums, Three Baldheads & a Dread; Lion and On in Five as well as more than a dozen singles that have climbed the Caribbean charts to become Top Ten hits. Gaining awards for their creative composing of songs, the group has been featured in major festivals in the North America and Germany; opening up for acts like: Sean Paul, Musiq Soul Child, Usher, John Legend and Rihanna. Their videos are currently on rotation on MTV, BET and some of their singles have been licensed for popular video games. In November 2007, Kees went to Nashville, Tennessee to work with composer/lyricist, Desmond Child, winner of many Grammy Awards. Recently recorded songs in collaboration with Maxi Priest and Bishop Lamont will be released later this year. The musical fusion of Kesí unique blend of R & B, calypso, rock and soca/reggae rhythms has been described as the Caribbean Pop. This style has given the group the opportunity to become a household name in Trinidad and Tobago; and has thrust them into the limelight across the Caribbean circuit, including in Miami, New York and Los Angeles.
