OPINION: Under Age Drinking on the Beach

If one hundred underage Black kids, as in 17-year-old girls and boys, were to get together in a park at Jane and Finch and openly drink alcohol what would happen? There would be a riot squad, massive arrests, and full media coverage of this open revelry. Could their parents get them off the police charges?

Not likely. However most Black kids are smart enough to know not to go into a public park and drink alcohol. What if I told you this has been happening over the last 60 years with White privileged kids in The Beach? Since their moms and dads were lawyers and connected to persons at City Hall the police don't arrest them; they just watch in their cars at a safe distance .They know that with the big amount of paperwork involved with their arrest, the prosecutor’s and the judge’s responses, it is a waste of time by the police services .The police department is political responsible to pressures from Toronto City Councillors, who are in turn are pressured by their White rich voters. The police have been told not to arrest the children of these privileged voters. Is it the responsibility of the police department or school teachers to teach the kids about the dangers of alcohol, or should this be done by the parents. Shouldn’t these same parents teach their teenagers not to play in the traffic? Why can't mommy and daddy teach little

Junior about alcohol. It's easy for them to tell their kids that knives are sharp. But Junior sees people drinking on TV and feel it's cool to do so. In France, 12 year old kids are brought up having wine at the dinner table. The rate of death from alcohol related accidents with kids under 19 is less than in Canada. Is this possible because mom and dad talk to their kids about alcohol? Teaching your children about alcohol is the same as teaching about sex. Are today’s parents in Toronto doing their best to teach their kids about these important practices, or are they learning wrong information from their peers? Who’s responsible if little Johnny or Mary dies at an underage drinking party, get too drunk and drowns in the lake? Is it the fault of the police, or the drunken child who should know better? Or is it the parents’ responsibility to keep their children from harm until they are adults? Editor: Paul Murton

Get Your Web Site To The Top Of The Web SEO... What is it you ask? Search Engine Optimization is the art of getting your business found in search engines such as Google, Bing, Yahoo, and others. This internet marketing service (SEO), does not use advertising, but rather gets your organic search engine ranking to be at the top of the Search Engine listings, without paying for search engine placement. Quite simply put, get your Website found by the 'key-words" and/or "search-engine phrases" relevant to your Website or Business. For example; I live in Don Mills and my furnace has just blown... OOPS! I need an

honest and reputable furnace repair-man in my neighborhood, who is going to do the work for me properly, in a timely fashion, and without taking me to the cleaners. (That's another search...), I may type into Google, or another: "furnace repair in Don Mills". If you are a furnace repair company in Don Mills, wouldn't you like to be in the "top 10" on these search engine lists when a prospective customer, in your neighborhood, seeking your services, types in the 'key-words" and/or "search-engine phrases" relevant to you? Me thinks... yes! Keep in mind, and think of your own personal experiences... how often have you gone past the 1st page of a search engine result

looking for a product, or service for yourself. I don't know about you, but for myself, if I don't find what I am looking for after scanning the 1st page of my search, chances are I will type in another "key-phrase" or "key-word" to find what I am looking for. In today's world... who has time? We want it now, and we want it fast... no muss... no fuss! Go get found! We can help! This site is offering a "Spring Special" Free web hosting for a year, (includes our Website Optimization Service), starting at $350.00 Give us a call (416) 693-9413 ~ or visit us online:

Health : Massage Therapy

Dr. Cirone

Spinal Stenosis Spinal stenosis causes back pain in the aging population. As we age, the spinal canal can become constricted, due in part to arthritis and other conditions. If the spinal canal becomes too tight, back pain can be the result.

Massage Therapy: Not only rejuvenates and relaxes but also helps relieve stress and tension. Have you ever waken up in the morning with a stiff shoulder or sore back? Feeling stressed? Ever feel like what you are doing in your day is causing your body to feel out of place? Are you working too hard and not able to treat yourself every once in awhile? The following are some potential causes of said pain. Lumbar Muscle Strain Muscle strains are the most common cause of low back pain. Patients may or may not remember the initial event that triggered their muscle spasms. Discogenic Back Pain Discogenic back pain is thought to be a common cause of low back pain. Discogenic back pain cis the result of damage to the intervertabral disc, but without disc herniation.

Lumbar Spine Arthritis Arthritis most commonly affects joints such as the knees and fingers. However, arthritis can affect any joint in the body, including the small joints of the spine. Arthritis of the spine can cause back pain with movement. Spondylolisthesis Spondylolisthesis causes back pain because adjacent vertebra become unstable and begin to “slip.” The most common cause of spondylolisthesis is due to degenerative changes causing loss of the normal stabilizing structures of the spinal column. If the spine becomes unstable enough, back pain can become a problem. Osteoporosis Osteoporosis can cause a number of orthopedic problems and generalized discomfort. Back pain from osteoporosis is most commonly related to compression fractures of the vertebra. Osteoporosis causes weak bones and can lead to these fractures. Dr. Cirone a chiropractor at the Victoria Park Chiropractic Rehab Centre has the solution for you. I incorporate my spinal adjustments

in association with the massage therapists - RMT’s for quick pain relief. The complaint of back pain is among the most common medical conditions. To begin on the positive side, patients must understand that most episodes of back pain resolve, and usually within a few weeks. Unfortunately, back pain can be among the most difficult and frustrating problems for patients and their doctors. Understanding the cause of your back pain is the key to proper treatment. Because back pain is sometimes difficult to treat, a better understanding of the cause of your condition will assist in your recovery. I understand with so many other patients I have treated over the past 30 years that from today’s hustle and bustle of daily living you would like to have a quick solution and to return to activities of normal living. We are currently offering an amazing promotion fee for our services. For only $29 you will receive an hour session and for $49 you will receive the full hour massage with one of our RMT’s. This special promotion offer is for a limited time only and you must bring this ad to “experience the difference”. Victoria Park Chiropractic Rehab Centre 3100 Danforth Avenue 416-691-8717

Written by the award-winning Vancouver playwright and novelist Anosh Irani, My Granny the Goldfish sprinkled audiences with giggles through a mixture of sarcastic one-liners and philosophical wisdom. Behind such humorous play was much collaborative effort between director Rosemary Dunsmore, talented actors Kawa Ada, Yolande Bavan, Veena Sood, and Sanjay Talwar, as well as the professional backstage crew. From Vancouver hospital to longdistance flight to living room in Bombay, the characters created by Irani were brought to life by the performers through voice variation, monologues, dances moves, etc. Not to mention the professional lighting design, stage deco, props, invisible

characters, and sound effects that which all paved the foundation for the play. Setting in the Vancouver hospital, the comedy opened with the soliloquy of a finance student named Nico (Kawa Ada), who immigrated to Vancouver two years ago from Bombay, India to break free from his alcoholic parents. Recently underwent a back surgery to remove a lump, Nico the self-confessed hypochondriac unexpectedly received a visit from his Granny (Yolande Bavan). Unbeknownst that Granny, nick named “Goldfish” due to her whiskey indulgence, was diagnosed of leukemia with only few months to live. Spot light also turned on to Nico’s parents who haven’t seen Nico and Granny for years. Living in Bombay’s red light district, Nico’s mother Farzeen (Veena Sood) is a racist alcoholic and his father Dara (Sanjay Talwar) is an unsuccessful bookie. It is not until Granny fabricated about Nico marring a Chinese nurse that Nico’s parents stormed into the Vancouver hospital for a family reunion. While witty conversations brought about much entertainment, the play centered on family conflict over generations, featuring the themes of forgiveness and acceptance, life and death. Despite being confined to the hospital bed, Kawa Ada managed

Closing with Nico’s recital of Granny’s last words, one was prompted to ponder: Life is so long that problems are inevitable, what attitude should one adopt? Would it be escapism through alcohol or confrontation through laughter? Life is so short that intolerances are intolerable, what kind of legacy should one leave behind? Would it be cowardice, negligence, elegance, or a smiley face? Indeed, My Granny the Goldfish was not just any comedy, but a philosophical comedy with sitcom twists. It conveyed to the audiences that one life could significantly impact another; a simple smile can make a difference. As if this spring season hasn’t warmed you enough, the one-of-a-kind comedy My Granny the Goldfish presented by the Factory Theatre from March 17 to April 15 is surely ready to warm your heart!

When was the last time you found out that goldfish, hypochondria, dysfunctional family, and immigration shared a common link? When was the last time you came across certain sensitive topics on racism and alcoholism that was too funny to be offensive? When was the last time the very comedy that had you laughed out loud also left you pondering about life and death? The time is now! This spring season between March 17 and April 15, the Factory Theatre is ready to bring sunshine to your day through its featured comedy My Granny the Goldfish.

to incorporate much variety to his performance in terms of stage position, voice level, and expressive reactions. From blaming his negligent parents to accepting personal responsibility to pursue a social cause, Kawa Ada vividly expressed Nico’s character development. Meanwhile, Veena Sood’s comical expression of sarcasm, racism, and variation in emotion also gave spirit to Farzeen’s character. Along with Sanjay Talwar, the alcoholic parents were one of the major sources of laughter in the play. Last but not least, Yolande Bavan’s talent and experience was not for naught. Through her youthful spirit, Yolande provided a dire contrast between the neurotic young Nico who feared death and the ill Granny who bravely confronted death with laughter. Granny’s carefree and carpe diem attitude was rather contagious in the air.

Theatrical Review: My Granny the Goldfish

main advantages of incorporating: 1. Limited Liability The main advantage to incorporating is the limited liability of the incorporated company. Unlike the sole proprietorship, where the business owner assumes all the liability of the company, when a business becomes incorporated, an individual shareholder's liability is limited to the amount he or she has invested in the company.

To Incorporate or Not Incorporate...The Age Old Question So you've started your own small business, and business is good. The business is starting to gain more customers, cash flow is positive, and revenues are exceeding expenses. What is the next step? Every small business person considers whether or not to incorporate their business at some point. If you're one of the people considering incorporating your business, here are the

3. Income Control If you incorporate your business, you can determine when you personally receive income. Instead of getting your income when it's received, being incorporated allows you to take your income at a time when you'll pay less in tax. 4. Income Splitting Another tax advantage of incorporating is income splitting among family members. Corporations pay dividends to their shareholders from the company's earnings. A shareholder does not have to be actively involved in the corporation's business activities to receive dividends. Your spouse and/or your children could be shareholders in your corporation, giving

While there are several advantages to incorporating your small business, there are also disadvantages that need to be considered. The following are some disadvantages of incorporating: 1. No Personal Tax Credits Corporations are not eligible for personal tax credits. Every dollar a corporation earned is taxed. As a sole proprietor, you may be able to claim tax credits a corporation could not. 2. Increased Paperwork There is more paperwork involved in maintaining a corporation than a sole proprietorship or partnership. Corporations must maintain a minute book, containing the corporate bylaws and minutes from corporate meetings. 3. Another Tax Return When you incorporate your small business, you'll have to file a corporate tax return each year. This will mean increased accounting fees. For further discussions on the above issue, contact Your Tax Professional, Nick Miseros from MS Partners LLP at 416-2245777 x2 or nick@mspartners.ca

2. The Small Business Tax Deduction If you incorporate your small business, your corporation may qualify for the small business deduction. This annual tax credit is calculated at the rate of 15.5% on the first $500,000 of active business income, which may be a much lower tax rate than that applied to your personal income.

HEALTH : BE FREE FROM INFLAMMATION! Inflammation has been found to be one of the major ways in which the body of an individual responds to stress. Stress can come to the body of an individual in the form of a physical injury and even due to some illness that the individual may be suffering from. Inflammation may be good for the body in the initial stages but after some time it does not remain much beneficial for the body. For example, when an individual suffers from a cold, he usually becomes a victim of fever. This is a form of inflammation and this helps to kill the virus by burning up the fever. If the inflammation persists after a few days, it will have side effects on the body and cause the individual great discomfort. Chronic inflammation occurs in many individuals. It doesn’t just happen in one’s muscles and joints – it occurs everywhere throughout the body – wherever the cells are being stressed or attacked. This can cause poor health conditions that may lead to other serious diseases such as Alzheimers, allergies, asthma, arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, infection and fibromyalgia. Individuals suffering from one of these diseases have inflammation accompanying the disease. This inflammation can lead to the formation of free radicals which leads to the destruction of the cells and cause other problems in the body. To minimize the effects of the inflammation on the body, it is better to opt for ways which will help you to decrease the effects of inflammation. When an individual takes steps to decrease the inflammation, it helps in reducing the effect of the disease and also to improve the bodily functions. There are several methods available to an individual for reducing inflammation. Some methods include the use of surgery and medications. These methods also have negative side effects attached with them and can also lead to the development of other health problems. It is therefore advisable that

individuals seek holistic methods to help them deal with inflammation and also support the body to heal itself effectively in the long run. Some of the ways in which an individual can reduce the inflammation in one’s body is as follows: Sleep Sleeping is the perfect inflammation reducing method. Sleeping adequately is the best way to deal with the stresses that an individual faces during the course of the day. Even short naps taken during the day also helps in reducing the stress. Getting to bed early and rising early will reap in more benefits than going to bed late and getting up late. Sleeping for seven hours a day is ideal for the body to help it deal with inflammation. Look Out For Foods You May Be Sensitive To The individual must always pay attention to the food that he is consuming. It has often been found that the food that we eat is the main reason for causing the inflammation in our body. Wheat, soy, dairy, corn and nuts are some of the common foods which may trigger off inflammation in individuals. The person should avoid eating all of the these to possibly get relief. Then, after a gap of one month one can consume one of them to check the effect that his body has on the food. One can also opt for alternatives. If an individual is allergic to dairy milk drink almond milk, which is also full of nutritious elements, and is a good substitute. Consume Nopalea Did you know that you can drink your way to health? There is a solution for you. Every day your body is invaded by numerous toxins, which create inflammation – everywhere in the body. As inflammation builds, your cells become weaker and more vulnerable to premature aging and an immense amount of debilitating diseases. This is a very slow insidious process

Mary-Kay Perris that takes many years to manifest into a full blown problem. And when it does, look out! Drink it and Thrive! Recent research has discovered the beneficial effects of the Nopal Cactus fruit. This fruit helps in reducing inflammation, detoxifies the body, strengthens the immune system and also promotes a healthy respiratory system. The Nopal Cactus has been in use by the people of the Sonoran desert for hundreds of years and it is now available in an easily accessible form. The fruit is pulverized and added to juice to make a nutritious drink. The little red fruit with high anti-inflammatory and aint-oxident properties must be consumed a few ounces daily to enjoy the excellent benefits of reduced inflammation, more energy, and an overall sense of wellbeing. When are you ready now to reduce inflammation in your body? Mary-Kay Perris is a Health Coach in Toronto. She is a Independant Rep. For the Nopalea – anti-inflammatory juice. We started with a classicguacamole and chips. Everything was nice and fresh, crisp tortilla chips surrounded a big bowl of hand-made guacamole. It tasted great, but I would have preferred more spice. That made it perfect for Paul though, as someone who turns green at the thought of a little pepper.

Masked Scarecrows, and colourful balloons greeted us as we descended the short staircase to Viva Mexico. Although some of the festive decor may have been in honour of Cinco De Mayo (our visit was the following day), there is much to look at any time of year, between the traditional Mexican attire and the bright paper globes encasing the hanging lights. Rainbow woven placemats vanished beneath giant square plates holding the generous servings of rice, beans and salad accompanying each entrÈe.

After I reassured Paul that he would survive, he suspiciously ordered the Quesadillas. They were fantastic- grilled just right, and bursting with cheese and fresh, tasty ingredients. I had mine with the sour cream and salsa, and was happy to find the salsa had a nice bite that went really well with the rest of the dish. Paul had it plain with a little bit of rice, and actually managed to survive!! Overall, it was an enjoyable, economical and authentic dining experience that I would recommend to anyone, regardless of spice palate!

For the main course, mine was a bit more adventurous. For $10.50, the “Enchilada Mexicanas” looked amazing - 3 corn tortillas folded over grilled chicken, then smothered in red, white, and green salsa, topped with sour cream and feta cheese.î I have to say, the feta was a really nice touch, and with the sour cream drizzled in thin strips, it added a lot to the overall presentation. My favorite of the three was the white salsa- quite mild, but with a very pleasant flavour that complimented the tortilla and chicken really well. The red salsa was great too, and had more of a bite for contrast. The green salsa would be amazing to someone who likes cilantro- I am not one of those people, but it was still nice. The beans and rice worked well together to tone down the heat and add texture. The oil-based dressing had a lovely sweet

flavour, and the salad was crispy and fresh.

song “Where Did I go”. A mixture of jazz infused pop with a bit of soul, they got the crowd toe tapping and set the beat for the evening. One of my personal favourites was a song she wrote for her 17 year old daughter which about dialogue a included “whatever happened to decency”, a banter between mother and daughter which I’m sure many mothers could relate with. When they finished their set there was a buzz in the air. Amongst the swirl of purple and white lighting there was an excited energy as

the crowd awaited the main act, legendary jazz performer and 10 time grammy award winning George Benson. Known for such hits as “Affirmation”, Mr. Benson and his band took the stage and the crowd began to cheer. Still going incredibly strong after over 30 years in the music industry, he opened with their hit song “breezin” and the air became thick with the infectious sound of jazz fusion. Alternating between guitar and vocals and just guitar, the set did not disappoint, and even included some classic scat style. The communication between the band and audience was felt and Mr. Benson said “All over the world this song resonated” before going into “Nothing’s Gonna Change My Love For You” in which enthusiastically crowd the applauded. A favourite included the 1950’s classic hit “Tequila”. A crowd pleaser which was turned in to a classic George Benson style of jazz, it included a guitar solo which was mesmerizing. As one of his last song’s of the night started, a solid disco beat began and the crowd was on its feet as the beat turned in to one of their biggest hits “Give Me The Night”. This writer wasn’t brave enough to dance, but I was definitely dancing in my seat. It was obvious that George Benson and his 5 piece band were in to all the songs and that resonated with

As the sun sets over Nathan Phillip square there is a palpable feeling of excitement as people await the Legendary George Benson. The night begins with the opening act Tressa Levassuer who, accompanied by her seven piece band, opened with their

After “Give Me The Night” Mr. Benson left the stage but the rest of the band remained. A three set encore commenced with the classic “Since I Fell For You” and ended with an excellent cover of “On Broadway” with an amazing drum solo. Although my own “This favourite personal Masquerade” was not played it was of little consequence. It was a very memorable evening and George Benson has proved he is still relevant in an age of auto tune and simple pop melodies.

ART: FILM LIFT Screens its facilities By: Nicole Witkowski

LIFT screens its facilities to potential movie-maker members

After 13 years in Liberty Village, the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers Toronto (LIFT) hosts a large group in the small foyer. Industrial ceilings, concrete floors and fresh, white, drywall encase hipsters, mom types, twenty-somethings and grey haired folks. The three-year-old Dupont St location encouraged visitors to sign up for a membership by flaunting their facilities and equipment. Ben Donoghue, LIFT’s executive director, was the main guide, offering tours to an always-large crowd.

LIFT boasts a darkroom, traditional film editing suites, a sound room, optical printers (which are scarce to find for use), a multi-purpose classroom, a computer lab, a small presentation room and film-tovideo transfer equipment. All are meant to serve as a means to eliminate the boundaries between film video, installations and new media, according to Donoghue. The tour prompts questions involving jargony numbers, film sizes and types, equipment rental costs and conditions of use. Most “ if not all “ tourists leave amazed and impressed with what they could be accessing with their membership. LIFT offers two membership types, the first level includes discount rates on workshops, LIFT screenings, various film service companies and eligibility to submit to and attend screenplay circles. But itís only after eight hours of volunteering per year that level one members gain access to equipment and facilities. The second level membership is double the cost, which involves double the volunteer hours but reaps priority bookings and a 50 per cent discount on rentals.

Through the narrow hallways, LIFT seems like a labyrinth of boring white walls with lots of doors until you step inside any one

of them.

LIFT supports film, video, installation and new media projects regardless of genre or format. “The only requirement is that productions be independent productions this means the filmmaker/artist has creative control over their work,” said Donoghue in a follow-up email.

Bill Whyte is proud to provide a muchneeded service to Torontonians. He originally trained as a graphic designer but realized an opportunity to start his own business and took it. GARDEN : How To Prune Trees When And How To Prune Deciduous Trees In general, deciduous trees and shrubs should be pruned when they are dormant, preferably in early spring just before growth starts. At this time, wound healing will begin almost at once and it will be most rapid. Dormant pruning will have less effect on the growth of trees than pruning when the tree is in active growth. Another advantage of dormant pruning with deciduous trees is that it is easier to select branches which should be removed when the leaves are gone. Dead limbs and those lacking in vigour can be pruned in mid-summer when they are easier to locate. Exceptions to the dormant pruning rule are maple, birch and elm which should be pruned when actively growing in mid-summer. When pruned in early spring, these species may lose excessive

amounts of sap. Pruning of Maple and Birch should not be done too late in the fall either, as wounds will not have a chance to heal before winter. Elm trees should not be pruned between April 15th and August 30th to prevent the spread of Dutch Elm Disease. When to Prune Most routine pruning to remove weak, diseased, or dead limbs can be accomplished at any time during the year with little effect on the tree. As a rule, growth is maximized and wound closure is fastest if pruning takes place before the spring growth flush. Some trees, such as maples and

birches, tend to “bleed if pruned early in the spring. It may be unsightly, but it is of little consequence to the tree. A few tree diseases, such as oak wilt, can be spread when pruning wounds allow spores access into the tree. Susceptible trees should not be pruned during active transmission periods. Heavy pruning just after the spring growth flush should be avoided. At that time, trees have just expended a great deal of energy to produce foliage and early shoot growth. Removal of a large percentage of foliage at that time can stress the tree. Most of all trust professionals to get the job done quickly and correctly. Call Peter at Jacob Tree Service 416-417-TREE (8733). See Ad this page
