KEEP YOUR EYES AND EARS ON KC erwin Delon Clarke aka KC was born on December 26, 1980 in a town called Georgetown in Guyana. At the young age of 10, KC was already performing in a church choir impressing church goers from around the country with his singing ability. Reggae music was a massive influence to Kerwin during this time; his favorite artists at that time were Papa San, Ninja Man and Super Cat. Kerwin had begun to embark on a journey combining his singing ability and the Reggae DJ style together creating the artist KC. At the age of 15, Kerwin began to write songs, he started by taking his favorite artists songs and rewriting them to his own lyrical style then performing them in front of friends. Kerwin’s friends have been a back bone of support encouraging him to pursue a dream as a reggae artist. Now being recognized by local communities, Kerwin decided to promote his first musical event in Guyana. This gave him the stage to showcase the artist KC. The show was a great success. By the time Kerwin turned 16 he made a decision to move to Toronto, Canada and pursue new life experiences and continue the development of his musical career.

in
Scarborough, Ontario Canada, Kerwin continued to promote more Reggae events, where he started performing his own songs, people began to realize KC was ‘the real deal’. KC the artist had arrived. KC had now developed a fan base, fans begun to ask for CD’s and this was overwhelming for KC. The requests for his music empowered him to record his first song; this was the catalyst for what was to come. In 2005 KC was introduced to Derek Kavanagh aka Mega Man, a Toronto based Music producer and Mixing Engineer. The first song they recorded together was called “The System” placed on a Mix CD compilation. During the next 5 years KC would develop into a veteran performer and songwriter, becoming a legend at sound clashes across the GTA! KC was now the man to beat lyrically on stage. In 2010, Haiti was hit by a massive earthquake which crippled the country, KC found himself overwhelmed with grief! He decided to help by performing at a charity foundation for Haiti, which raised money to help survivors. In April 2010, KC was asked to an event by his long time friend Raeburn Jones, KC would be introduced to entrepreneur Junior Weekes a successful business man with a love for music. Junior was given KC’s Demo CD, life was about to change for KC. Junior was amazed by KC’s talents and asked if he
needed a manager, KC agreed to let junior manage him and the magic began to happen. Junior placed KC into one of the biggest shows in Canada on February 2011 Opening for Pinchers, Little John and Josey Whales, a great learning experience for KC to meet with successful and current artists. In August 2011, a budget was put in place; Junior started an independent label JDK Records and signed KC. KC was now writing and recording new songs, with new written material. He was on a quest for the right beats to complement his musical style. With some luck and Junior’s connections, KC was introduced to veteran reggae producer Computer Paul known for his work with some of Reggae’s biggest artists like Shabba Ranks, Inner circle, Jimmy Cliff, and his double platinum single “Mama Africa” with Akon. KC took a trip to Jamaica to meet with Computer Paul to get beats developed for the new songs. While in Jamaica KC wrote and recorded two songs “Baby Girl” and “Jeans”, both songs were placed in radio rotation, they quickly became hits with the fans, “Baby Girl” went to number one on Best FM and stayed at number one for three solid weeks. KC along with Mega Man are currently finishing four singles that will drop in 2012 and have also started the process of working on an album that will drop in 2013, stay tuned

REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S ARTIST WATCH listening to the likes of Celine Dion, Tanya Stephens, Bob Marley, Ragga Dee and Geoffrey Lutaaya. Coming from a big family, Aggie Cox knew what its like to do things in front of a big audience and most defiantly how to compete for what she believes is right, being from a Tanzanian family Aggie was not one of the most popular girls in school and therefore did not have many friends but always kept her head down and got the job done in whatever task she was assigned.
AGGIE COX okuzanisa Agnes Asiimwe AKA Aggie Cox is a musical genius that can rap, sing-jay, and sing in four different languages. Born in Kampala Uganda to Tanzania parents and bought up in a family of nine, Aggie Cox developed a love for music at a very young age; she grew up
K
A Graduate of Kyambogo University, Aggie Cox got her first taste of recording in late 2007 when she recorded her first track “Mr. Right” for AK Records, that did not go down too well with Aggie’s parents as they did not want her to focus on music, but Aggie continued recording without their consent and recorded two other tracks in 2008.
Aggie Cox’s big break would finally come in 2009 when she took her music to her native Tanzania and introduced it to a few Radio Stations where she received a warm reception and love from the Tanzanian people. By mid 2010 with the approval of her family, Aggie decided to focus more on her music, so she went on to record “Nakupenda” and “Sweet Boy” which brought huge success to her name in Tanzania and which helped her to perform on a number shows across East Africa. Aggie’s success continued into 2011 where she met young Ugandan producer Kintu “Kron” Ronald, together they recorded two hits singles, “Sweet Mama” and “Togenda”. “Sweet Mama” brought Aggie a lot of success and made her catch the eyes and ears of UK based Record Label ‘TMD Records’, they recently signed Aggie to the Label. Aggie Cox has started working on her debut album
which is due to be released soon and is being produced by Kron Productions. It will feature remixes from UK producer Suncycle who is responsible for RnB star Jason Derulo’s hit single “Fight for You Remix”. Aggie has collaborated with Uganda Dancehall artist Butchaman and Jamaican Reggae Star Tenza. She is also featured on TMD Records charity single “Zion People” which also features Tenza, Butchaman and others. Aggie is also on the Indie Roots Records compilation album “The LadyLike Compilation” with her song “Touch Me” alongside artists from Canada, Jamaica, UK, USA and more. One can expect lot more to come form this East African songbird, who is set to make an impact on the music arena globally.

REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S VIEWS
JULION VIEWS STEROIDS – BEN JOHNSON’S VINDICATION The IOC and the USADA for me are probably the most corrupt sporting bodies in the world. This is pretty poor considering the reputations of boxing federations or even the NFL. Boxing’s shady past is in gangster movies dating back to the 1920’s I’m sure, all the way to the present with movies like “Pulp Fiction” where fighters are paid off to throw fights. The things done to Jack Johnson and Muhammed Ali are demeaning and disrespectful and must never be forgotten! Yet the fear, intimidation, in comparison to the nature of the fighter under the thumb of organized crime, must be terrorizing! You may wish to say something but in the end,
STEELE ALBUM REVIEW “REALITY” By: Julion King In an era where artists in all genre are focused more on releasing ‘hit’ singles, it is so refreshing to find one with old school thoughts and putting out a piece of work based on experiences, stories, spiritual growth, life situations, love and humor all in one album. An album used to do that back in the day. We used to listen to the whole album till record labels / artists started missing the mark by seeking a hit tune or two and then fill the rest with shit tunes. Nice when an artist puts themselves into their work, whether we agree or not with their politics or ideologies. Nice piece a work Steele! My own journey makes me lean more to Rastafari
you really can’t, if you wish to live. If we listen to the rumors, ask Sonny Liston! Yet, even in a sport as corrupt as boxing the use of PEDs are not close to the use in amateur sports, the NFL who has ZERO steroid testing because if they did, the league would end tomorrow or especially, professional cycling. I’m angry for Ben Johnson and always have been! I’m angry at a useless Canadian government response on his behalf, never stepping in to attempt any protection of one of “its citizens”! I’m angry at racist white Canadians who were quick to point out that Ben was “Jamaican born” the minute the test results were completed and found to be a positive! I’m angry at the crab-in-a-barrel Jamaicans, West Indians and Africans who tried to distance themselves from Ben when he needed us the most! Praises to Charlie Francis (may he rest in peace) who spoke it real! He stated, and I paraphrase, “if one wished to compete in the 100 meter race without the use of steroids, one would need to take their starting blocks 10 meters BEHIND the other competitors!” The real truth is, tunes, preaching and lesson, and Steele is a guru on lovers rock and starts the album with “If I didn’t love you”, a true rock-a-way, rent-a-tile which had me rewinding it four or fives times. Large raspect to Sting Ray Production and Mr. Steele on this bad bad chune which should be rocking jams any and everywhere! A romantic tune with great feeling, tough bass line and lyrics of love, sappy for this Rastaman but I still haffe rewind dis track! Track 4, “Good Old Days” is a track which is a reminder of why we all used to go to dances. You can feel the smile on your own face just remembering and this tune is a “skankin” vibes. “Jah Will Be There” a colab with Ritchie Stevens is a real “message” track with each man praising
if no one took steroids, Ben Johnson would have beaten Carl Lewis and every other sprinter in the world! Which he did in Seoul, where one may surmise that they all took PEDs! The numbers of failed drug tests by American sprinters covered up by their governing bodies are too much to mention and Carl Lewis was on that team! Now all of a sudden Lance Armstrong is the devil? Seven tour wins and some pencil pushing bureaucrat takes away the achievement of THOUSANDS of hours of PAIN, training, dedication, perseverance and commitment!?!? Q: Did Lance Armstrong take steroids? A: A high probability! Q: Was it an even playing field? A: Yes it was as everyone else was doping! On a side note, you have to respect Jan Ulrich for not accepting 3 of the Tour victories taken from Armstrong! Carl Lewis has none of that type of class as Jan Ulrich! Barry Bonds prior to alleged steroid use was widely considered the best player in the MLB for over a decade! How come he still
isn’t great? Were the people pitching to Bonds nightly all on steroids as well? That is also a high probability! ‘They’ embarrass who ‘they’ want and let slide the things that make ‘them’ money! I am in no way condoning steroid use! I am saying that if you are going to bust a single human being for “cheating”, what gives you the right to do so without TESTING EVERY ONE ELSE! I’m as proud of Ben Johnson’s race in Seoul as I am of Donovan Bailey or Usain Bolt’s accomplishments! No, it has not been tarnished by steroid allegations for me any way! They were all on a level playing field! I’m only one guy and I do know that I do not speak for the rest of the world so I really don’t need folks to agree or disagree! I ask you to hold the governing bodies as responsible as you hold the athletes! They “cheat” by testing and punishing individuals they seem to get the best bang for the buck from in the media. In 1988 it was rumored that the ENTIRE American sprint team male and female were on a steroid program, yet Ben got busted! Really? Impress me! Start drug testing every NFL team tomorrow morning!
the Father and a real overstanding of His ability to protect each and every one of us. Uplifting track to play when we need a reminder of the fact that we are never truly alone and the Father “will be there when you want.” Nice my idrens. Nice rendition of Marvin Gaye’s “What’s going on”. Today’s version! “Doing Something Rite” is a self affirmation, facing the ‘hate’ from all the sources he sees yet sticking to his guns as the Father has it set and focusing on His will! Good one to play when you feel the weight of the world on your shoulders. “Praise Jah” I must touch as its about praising the Father but you know seh mi nuh love the auto-tune ting weh dem do wid the vocals but it reaches a younger audience than me so I man haffe laud this one!

REGGAEXCLUSIVE CULTURAL NEWS
By: Pablo Naphtali
UNITED STATES OF AFRICA Greetings Rastafari sons and daughters of all mansions, during the last few years I an I have been observing the works of the African Union (AU). These works have had little or no exposure through the mainstream media and most people within and outside of the continent have not had the benefit of following the progress of the organization. Now this is not to say that information is not available, but in order for ones to access these current events that concern all Africans at home and abroad, I an I must assist by helping to bring about awareness of the AU and its efforts to achieve its initiatives. The African Union (AU) is the child so to speak, of the Organization of African Unity established in 1963 by HIS IMPERIAL MAJESTY HAILE SELASSIE I in Addis Ababa Ethiopia. Long before the Organization of

African Unity (OAU) was established, the people called by his name – the Rastafari – have cried out for Repatriation, to return the descendants of Africa who were taken in captivity to the west. Land in Shashamane, Ethiopia, was even granted to Black people of the west as early as 1931, and many people, mostly members of the Rastafari and Jamaican communities, began to settle there. From that time to the present, Rastafari people have done more to promote African Unity and Repatriation than any group of Africans abroad. In fact, it was the Rastafari culture which taught the world “Africa for Africans at home and abroad.” Before the OAU was formed, the African Diaspora, including three members of the Rastafari community and a delegate of the Ethiopian World Federation, sent a fact-finding mission to several African nations in 1961 to discuss Repatriation. The mission, sponsored by the Jamaican Government, was met and welcomed by H.I.M. Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia, Governor General Nnamdi Azikiwi of Nigeria, President Kwame Nkrumah of Ghana, President William Tubman of Liberia and Prime Minister Milton Margai of Sierra-Leone. Several official and unofficial reports with recommendations were made at that time, and thus, the issue of Repatriation was the primary issue of concern of both the African Diaspora and leading month in one accord, and then we will eliminate poverty from our Community. The women on the council will be elected to the position of trust, as we empower them to represent our collective social and economic needs. We will place our finance in trust to these women of virtue. Remember, the hands that rock the cradle will heal our world. If together we endorse this plan and agree to tithe only $5.00 a month to a Collective Community Trust Fund, we will collect a savings of $1,000,000.00 (One Million Dollars) per month, and raise $12,000,000.00 (12 Million Dollars) a year, to heal and
governments of Africa who, two years later, would form the OAU. Perhaps the first attempt that the OAU made to include the African Diaspora happened in 1963 at the opening session of the OAU Summit. At that conference, H.I.M. Haile Selassie I affirmed that… “Our Armageddon is past. Africa has been reborn as a free continent and Africans have been reborn as free men. The blood that was shed and the sufferings that were endured are today Africa’s advocates for freedom and unity. Those men who refused to accept the judgment passed upon them by the colonies, who held unswervingly through the darkest hours to a vision of an Africa emancipated from political, economic and spiritual domination, will be remembered and revered wherever Africans meet, many of them never setting foot on the continent.” The following is a quotation from the current African Union 6th region pamphlet - “The AU-the African Union- is the linear descendant of the Organization of African Unity (OAU). The OAU transformed in 2001-2002 with the birth of the AU. The AU is the African governmentcentered, continent - wide body of 53 member states (Morocco has not joined) established to represent the joint interests of African countries, and to eventually create a Union of African States, which will be a single country of Africa to transform our Black Communities. Our Benevolent purpose as the Global African Communities Network is to eliminate poverty and violence from our society as we heal the children, women and men of African Ancestry. This plan will allow us to create generational wealth in our communities. We can then eliminate poverty, and sustain our collective social and economic security from generation to generation. By first agreeing, then acting responsibly, together we will save a specific amount of money every month, and use our financial assets to meet
replace the current 54 countries. The AU has laid out, on paper, a roadmap for the creation of a real Pan African unification, and the Diaspora is a big part of those plans. Although the exact definition is still a work in progress, in 2005, the AU defined the Diaspora as “…peoples of African descent and heritage living outside of the continent, irrespective of their citizenship, and who remain committed to contribute to the development of the continent and the building of the African Union.” Geographically, this large population, variously estimated at between 150-350 million folk, is to be found in the USA, Canada, the Caribbean, Central and South America (including Brazil), and Europe, with Asian, Oceania and AsianPacific populations still to be determined. The AU defines the African continent as being divided into 6 geographical regions- North Africa, South Africa, West Africa, East Africa, Central Africa, the Diaspora (the 6th Region, which is a work in progress). Twentyfirst century Pan African unification must include bringing together all six of those geographical regions into one entity. The African Union (AU) has invited the African Diaspora to become “voting members” of the AU. (Cont’d. on Page 12)

STEELE’S ALBUM REVIEW (Cont’d. from Pg 5)
If it makes one youngster seek Faith, this tune is worth it! “Let’s Stay Together” an adaptation from Mr. Al Green is a song people shouldn’t touch based on how Al laid it down. Lovely cover by Mark Steele! I rewound this one a time or two. “Lies” caught my attention for a couple of reasons! One was the bass line, production and mastering. I know it is a tad technical but it is very well done. The other is the simple honesty in the lyrics. “If you think you’re Lonely Now” a Bobby Womack cover. For all a de ol’ foot dem! Lovely piece of work from Wiz and Charles! Nice memories when this tune came on in any jam. “Jah Is My Strength” is a Steele original that he debuted on a previous album. One night while doing Reggae Riddims with Patrick Roots on CIUT 89.5fm, Wednesday nights, Roots played this track. I was in the studio with a man whose name I no longer remember who confided that this song saved his life. He said that this song helped him through an exceedingly difficult period of his life and he wanted to let Steele know that. Steele, I just told you!
“Papa I Love You” is acceptance of the differences in certain homes where some men have several women with several children, the disappoint of the absentee father and how much it means when said father takes even a little bit of time or shared experiences that can be cherished for a lifetime. Parental responsibility without judging! All in all a very solid project and a nice ride! I don’t ever do album reviews because of times when I don’t like a song, lyrical content, production quality of an artist’s work, I still really have no right to say anything about it as I can’t sing even a note and definitely can’t play any instruments. This is my first and probably last album review and I am blessed that Steele called me out so that I could take in this piece of work. Yet as a fan, I need music to move me and Steele’s album has songs that move me.

We met with Mr. Macaulay Kalu (Chairman of the board) and (Co-Chair) Ms Alesia Johnson. During the meeting Ms. Johnson updated us about her recent visit to South Africa for the African Union summit, her love for the continent and the vibrant Rastafari Community in South Africa was very heartfelt and I and I was made to feel at ease and enthused by her down to earth reasoning. Mr. Kalu in contrast (though warm and courteous) seems extremely committed, focused and resolved in his responsibilities to the cause, and went immediately to addressing the task at hand, a man of action who’s personal experiences are inspirational, a very balanced team in my opinion. Some of the goals of the AU that we heard that afternoon were of great inspiration to us. JAMAICA’A 50TH INDEPENDENCE IN CALGARY

The event was held at Our Lady of Fatima Hall and included a dinner and dance as well as Dj music by Love Harmony, World Lock and New Sensation, followed by live performances from Dollaz D and Friends, Stamina, Lenky, and one of the world’s top Reggae acts, L.U.S.T!

The atmosphere was beautiful with candle lit tables and the entire hall was tastefully decorated with green, gold and black, the Jamaican flag colours. The Djs entertained the crowd before the live acts began. Some of Calgary’s youngest and most talented entertainers opened the stage show with Dollaz D and Friends. Stamina was also on the bill and did a fine performance as well. Calgary’s most gifted male singer was to follow, none other than Lenky who impressed the crowd immensely with his smooth as silk voice and fantastic performance! The crowd was then pumped and ready for the headlining act! Finally, the much anticipated moment had arrived when world renowned Reggae sensations L.U.S.T burst on to the stage! The audience was wowed in an instant with their incredible voices and sweet harmonies! Not to mention how stunning they looked in their black, yellow, green, red and white attire! Although his love for music began at only 6 years old, he became more serious about it in 2007 and decided on the name Khaos in 2009. Part of his motivation to work hard and do well comes from his family, since his parents spent a great deal of his childhood working to give him and his siblings a
With the release of his first official single “It’s A Party” in July of 2010 and debut Mix Tape “Naturally Different” the following May, his evergrowing fan base couldn’t wait to see what was next. Just a month later, he came out with a music video for “If God Was like Man” featuring Toi and produced by Calibur Entertainment. Both the track and video showed another side of him and left fans with a thought-provoking message. Several producers have acknowledged his talent, which can be seen by features on G3 Musik’s After Summer Riddim with “Celebration” and “Badmind” on Lmr Pro’s Chain Reaction Riddim, and he has worked with artists like Toi, Nellie Roxx, Chris Matic, Matik and D’East. Despite being unsigned, Khaos is constantly working on new music, including a few upcoming collaborations, and will continue to give his fans and supporters something to enjoy. “Things Kina Funny” puts forth the definitive Fragga Ranks collection to date. This CD offers songs for everyone. Let’s not forget about the “Loner” album, Fragga’s collaborative work with various artists recorded during the 90’s. Fragga delivers a message praising positive living, embracing love and offering hope. As the media debates the roles and responsibilities of artist and record companies, Fragga Ranks continues to deliver a message of positivity. He has seen how musicians can inspire the lives of youths and make a difference beyond record sales. Though she is regarded as a reality artist, Karamanti has no problems stepping outside her box from time to time and engaging listeners in what she refers to as pure entertaining rhetoric. This is what she did on her single “Don’t it” which was produced by Red Boom from Hard at Work Music (a Jamaican based record label). The track exposed her to a different audience who overwhelmingly insisted on a video, which was produced and released to TV in May of this year. Karamanti spent the month of July engaged in a nationwide media tour which had her performing and/or being interviewed on all the major entertainment radio and TV programs in Jamaica. That media tour was followed up with a Canadian tour which saw her hitting the stage on major events such as the Montreal Reggae Festival and the Toronto Rastafest. Now back home in Jamaica, Karamanti is busy laying tracks for her first official studio album.

difficulties, and stop looking for outside solutions. This is not to say we are resisting assistance from other nations, especially the ones that orchestrated our dependency, but we will only get international respect when we can Captain our own destiny. A lot of other nations have been doing these things successfully even here in our cities due to their solidarity and commitment. Our struggle is blighted with the segregation of our people dating back to colonialism and slavery; we must stop chasing the illusions and conquer the crab in a barrel mentality that plagues us. I encourage ones and ones to contact and be a part of the 6th region of the African Union here in the Diaspora, and have a vote and input in the future of the United State of Africa. Is Africa really fragmented, and has independence been achieved on this great continent only to see the African nations themselves transform differences into divisions? And are such divisions as already exist, imposed upon us by history and circumstance, to be widened and deepened by our own efforts? Let Us say, first of all, that Ethiopia considers herself a member of one group only – the African group. We will join in any deliberations, we will consider any plan, we will debate any proposal anywhere, and at any time, provided that it contributes to the maintenance of world peace, the development of Africa’s human and material resources, and the protection of this continent’s legitimate interests. When we Africans have been misled into pigeonholing one another, into attributing rigid and inflexible views to states which were present at one conference but not another, then we shall, without reason or justification, have limited our own freedom of action and rendered immeasurably more difficult the task of joint efforts, in harmony and brotherhood, in the common cause of Africa. - Words of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie I. “The Lord Gave The Word; Great Was The Company Of Those That Published It.” Psalms 68 African Union Sixth Region Canada Foundation Correspondence Address - 50 Gervais Drive Suite 500 B & D, Don mills, Ontario, M3C 1Z3. On August 28th 1976, George Barrett began his broadcasting career on Vancouver Coop Radio, CFR0 102.7 FM after migrating to British Columbia from his native Jamaica. A reflection of his life, work, and passion, The Reggae Radio Show was born. In October 1982, its sibling, The Rockers Show - named after the classic Jamaican film ‘Rockers’ - followed on CITR 101.9 FM. Thirty-four years since his first show aired, George Barrett continues to dedicate his time and talents to educate and entertain western Canadians and world-wide listeners on his weekly reggae programmers. In Jamaica, George’s passion for reggae music began at an early age; his family’s business in Bath, St. Thomas, was next door to Robert’s Night Club and Tavern. This early exposure to sound systems such as Barlow Sound, Daddy Nick, Mellow Canary, Merritone Disco, Danny Lou, and Phoenix the Ghost, in addition to his later influences that included the likes of Sir Coxsone’s Downbeat Sound, Duke Reid’s Trojan Sound, Super Tone Sound, Lloyd Bells, Lloyd the Matador Sound, and King Tubby’s among others, led to the creation of George’s own sound system, Wadada Hi-Fi years later in Canada. A note to the soundbwoys: his box is deep, with over4000 7” singles, 3000 plus LPs and 12” records, and over 10,000 CDs; not too many soundmen would be left standing especially after he plays his barrage of authentic dub plates from the Stepping’ Razor himself, Peter Tosh.
With the longest running reggae show in Canada, it is no wonder that George “Reggae” Barrett is a multiple Canadian Reggae Music Award (CRMA) winner for his outstanding work and dedicated services in the field of reggae music. The CRMA also bestowed on him his cherished Peter Tosh Memorial Award, one of his fondest memories alongside that of reuniting with Bob Marley and the Wailers in their dressing room in 1976 while touring in Vancouver. Others have also found it fitting to praise and honor George for his dedication, passion and hard work. In the liner notes of the Peter Tosh Honorary Citizen 3 CD box set, George Barrett received an honorable mention for his contribution. George has been honoured by The Congress of Black Women, receiving the Canada Pioneer Award for his “Contribution in Paving the Way for Others to follow”. Outstanding contribution to the reggae music industry’s Best Radio Dj. “Reggae is largely absent from mainstream airplay in North America. Its strongest outposts are non-commercial and college radio stations, and public access cable TV channels, which broadcast programs presented by volunteer devotees of the music. To do a weekly show requires an enormous amount of work - auditioning new releases, researching the backgrounds of upcoming guests, combing the past for its most important moments. It requires an enormous amount of dedication - or, as Rasta say, “livication,” because these activities are almost all non-paying positions. Such a committed presenter is George Barrett of Vancouver, who has spent 33 years educating Western Canada’s growing reggae audience. He comes from the First Family of Reggae Music - his cousins Carlton and Aston are the worldfamous Barrett Brothers, the drum and bass section of Bob Marley’s Wailers band, who brought the message of the prophet to the four corners of the planet, so the music is in George’s blood. “Because he came directly out of the culture that produced this irresistible riddim, he knows it in ways that those of us up north can’t. And his articulate ability to share his knowledge and love of reggae has shaped Canada’s perceptions of Jamaica’s greatest export, and influenced a couple of generations of young fans. TENZA Tenza, hailing from Kempshot of Montego Bay, Jamaica, is a musical angel in disguise. Tenza left Jamaica when she was only fourteen to reside in the UK, in the town of Slough. Living the life she lived back in Jamaica, it was the empowering and highly uplifting sounds of Bob Marley, Yellow Man, Beres Hammond, Bounty Killer, Dennis Brown, Lady Saw, Super Cat and Beenie Man that kept her faith and hope strong throughout all these years to make it and become what she has become today.
Tenza’s skills had created an opportunity for her to become a member of the electric trio ‘Fya’ - the formerly Def Jam signed female dancehall group. ‘Too Hot’ and ‘Must Be Love’ being a couple of the many Gold selling hits ‘Fya’ released. Tenza is set to release her debut solo album and has been working vigorously day and night in the studio to complete it. Overcoming many obstacles, artists to practice on. This rich environment set the foundation for Kya as an artist.
KYA KINDU She’s young and dynamic. Kya Kindu aka The Dangerous Herb is known for her strong enchanting voice coupled with her mastery of lyrical penmanship. Born to Jamaican parents during the roots rockers era, this Montreal native grew up listening to many types of music. Deeply rooted in her Jamaican heritage, Kya was mostly exposed to Ska, Rock Steady and Roots Reggae and Dancehall music. Her mother was a Reggae chanter who owned her own sound system that she would welcome local
She had a chance meeting in the late 90’s with Legendary Rock Steady artist Alton Ellis, where he asked her, “Are you involved in the music?” The reason he asked her was because he was surprised that such a young girl would not only recognize him by face but also be able to list out all his songs that were her favorites. A few years later she met him again and reminded him who she was and he asked her again “Are you involved in the music?” When she told him he asked her that same question the first time they met they both had a great laugh, but she never answered the question. Alton’s question began to linger in Kya’s mind as she wondered if he saw something in her she wasn’t aware of. A month later in April 2000, Kya began writing her own songs drawing her inspiration from innate wisdom, life experience and her Guru Bob
Marley. First hook, first verse, first song...she formed her own musical identity based on old school sounds mixed in with some new school and her unique style of chanting. In 2003 she joined the artistic improv collective KALMUNITY as a vocalist. Kya was also featured in their book “The Talking Book” where 3 of her songs were selected and put in print. In 2005 Kya began to focus on putting her songs on record and local radio. Her first underground track “Who Me?” done on the ever famous Welcome to Jamrock instrumental received a lot of love from Radio, Local DJ’s and the community at large because of it’s message on ‘black on black’ crime. Kya was then asked to take part in a medley video “Welcome to Mount Real” for her song which brought her much love from the Hip Hop community of Montreal and over 89, 822 views on you tube. She has performed in Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, St.Damien and St. Fortunat Quebec. She even
appeared as a special guest on a Bob Marley tribute in Manhattan NY at the B.B King club. She has opened for the likes of Buju Banton, Sister Nancy, Mr Vegas and Baby Cham. In August 2012 Kya appeared on the Album ‘The Ladylike Compilation’ produced by Indie Roots Records, accompanied by many other females from across the globe like Lady G, Aggie Cox, Tenza and from Canada, Liberty Silver, Kay Morris and Donna Makeda. The album which is now being sold on iTunes was produced to help raise money for an Orphanage in St. Andrew Jamaica. This is just one of the Humanitarian efforts Kya has contributed her talents to. She has helped to raise money for Haiti relief, Breast Cancer research and providing school supplies, music programs and breakfast for school children.
