REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S VIEWS deliberately placed in our collective paths, we have yet to find a solution to go over, through, around or even to dig under, barring our path to product sales. The ‘system’ is relentless! It NEVER stops! It is my contention that true talent, hard work as well as creativity along with a huge dose of tenacity could break any blockade! We also cannot afford to stop!

JULION VIEWS

THIS REGGAE STORY HAS A HAPPY ENDING n the past I have opined about several aspects of this reggae genre of mine, pointing out the reasons as I saw them, for the failure /s that may allow a band or artist from achieving stardom, or selling music or most importantly, making a living from their talent.

I

First Barrier: I pointed out our issues with “the System”! What system are you referring to? It is well chronicled and way too deep to go over once again but what is significant to note is the series of hurdles,

Third Barrier: The stigma that Canadian reggae artists are not of a proper quality or even close to those that perform in Jamaica. Who’s to blame for this one? Well, instead of casting

BURN PAGAN CHRISTMAS? henever I talk with my Rasta friends we always end up in a heated debate. Then after all the steam has evaporated, we laugh about it, until the next time another topic comes up. Well this time the topic of Christmas came up (Oh no… I hear you saying, you did not go there Special). Well for those who know me, I just talk my mind… Done… So anyway, my Rasta friend shouted out “Burn your Pagan Babylon Christmas!” So I shouted back,

Another of our issues is some of the crap artists inundating the internet, especially Facebook with crap tunes that NO ONE wants to hear! Crap tunes that only they post over and over and over and over again that NO ONE else will re-post for them! They become the standard for Canadian reggae so I implore the better artists to upload more of their tunes so Canadians as well as the rest of the world can hear the great songs that I get to hear! Fourth Barrier: This one I call the “second place mentality”! Many of my peers, artists, promoters and counterparts in the genre have reconciled themselves to the fact that since this is all that there is, well, this is all that

I want my children to grow knowing the truth about Slavery, Apartheid and Systematic Racism, but I want them to be able to understand what I am saying and be able to ask and participate in a conversation of understanding with me, when the time arises. I do not want them to be fearful and create a paranoid view of the world, without having the mature tools to deal with this new information.

definitely enjoy the presents, the giving and receiving of love and gifts (which we do all year around anyway). My house is a warm house, filled with love and not paranoid, espionage thoughts. Do I believe that Black people have been dealt badly, YES. Do I believe it is still happening, YES. Do I believe that it is possible for a man to be born in the sun with his bloodline and all accentors also born in the sun to magically be born with “Blond Hair and Blue Eyes, hair straight and no tanned pigmentation on his skin???? H**L NO. Did I believe that Santa Claus (or Santa Fraud, as my Rasta friends calls him) would bring me that expensive bike I saw on TV, when I was four years old, YES. Do I believe in him now that I am an adult? NO WAY HOSAY... But do I feel betrayed by my parents or society for telling me this? Am I now, dysfunctional or confused with life (Hey, all my friends, do not answer that :-)

This is the same stance that I take with Christmas. I personally enjoy Christmas. I

As parents, we have our own rules and laws that we decide to follow. Some of us

“Well, Burn your Vegetables”... He found that funny. The real topic then started. He said that even though he enjoyed Christmas as a child, as a man, he now knows the TRUTH... I told him that as a child, we are allowed to dream and have fairytales around us. I understand that our children need to know the truth, but I feel that our inner guilts, obsessions and fears, sometimes overpowers the innocent times of being a child.

SPECIAL MIX VIEWS

Second Barrier: No infrastructure! We have found no way to collectively create an infrastructure capable of earning royalties from airplay or performances, radio airplay nationally in ALL provinces, product distribution across the country or around the world, a venue / s in our possession to showcase reggae year round, a Canadian reggae tour for performing acts. Fifty years of reggae and no infrastructure! Who’s to blame but ourselves?

blame, I will tell you of instances where I have been to live performances where folks in the audience ask me if the band or artist performing is actually from Canada! Greatest compliment, yet the greatest insult I always say! Yes, they are from Canada, yet, why have you never heard about them? Back to the lack of an infrastructure!

there is! We have never really risen, so why bother trying? I mean, really, why bother trying? Well I’ll tell you! The Scotia and the TD Banks have investments in what used to be The Caribana Celebration, The Irie Festival and the Jambana Festivals. Banks do not invest unless there is profit! Cudos to the organizers of all of these events for getting corporate interest and monies but that ought to tell the rest of us that our events, our cultures are worth something to ourselves and for us to invest in our own talent! I told you that this had a happy ending didn’t I? Here it is: - Work together, apart! Huh? When a band or artist has a show, every other performer and entertainer in the genre MUST take the time to promote that artist’s show! No matter whether you like the person or not! If no one promotes your shows, it may that you are one of the ‘crap’ artists so STOP! For the rest of the good ones, promote each other! It is a numbers game! The more people that know, is the more people that will go! It is that simple! Grow all audiences! I have seen it work! read the bible and take pieces out, that suits our life style. (That is why there are so many different religions), (By the way, they all claim that their way is the only right way), (mmm, now who is confused, anyway, let’s get back to the topic). What I am saying is, choose how you feel to bring up your children and stop the bullying of other peoples choices. Live and Let Live and also, “STAY OUT OF MY BUSINNESS”. P.S. Burn Your Corn :-). Take Care until next time... Special Mix.

REGGAEXCLUSIVE CULTURAL NEWS

REWIND THIS THOUGHT By: Pablo Naphtali ail Ras and Ras and Sistas of the heart. Wisdom is paramount for us in these times; its importance is second to none of the virtues, except for love and charity. The African people are at a very crucial and decisive point in our journey thru this dispensation of time. It’s a time to be assertive and courageous in the international arena. The thoughts and attitudes of people are now experiencing changes from within, regardless of race or culture their eyes are opening up to the corruption of the world systems in it’s present state. pivotal and essential role to play in these changes. People realize that what we have been saying about health, environment, family, politics, religion and human relations on a whole has been tested and proven in this last century. Now low and behold the powers that be have increased their efforts to control and distract the populous, with scare tactics of killer viruses, terrorist threats, economical disasters and such alike. Of course I am not saying these things don’t exist, but haven’t they always? Is warfare new to mankind? Or disease and plagues? Isn’t economic status usually dependent on your military and exploitation abilities? So what is new? Well let’s see, we now have world satellites, mass media and communication, which enables them to manipulate and control multitudes through the thought process of indoctrination, not so much with religion this time, but with what they have taught us of science and logic. The modern news media moguls are the voice of the new world order. Spirituality is a now a hobby and has nothing to do with the real world. That’s what they are teaching. There are a couple of reasons why the Olmecs are so important. First, they used and developed many things culturally and religiously that were later used by the Mayans and Aztecs and many other cultures. Second, they had a wide influence in their day, which gives us reason to believe that they are responsible for spreading the religious ideas of the ‘ab-original’ people who later came to inhabit South, Central and North America.

the church choir. She recalls that she actually fell in love with singing at Elementary School where she was formally introduced to music. However, some would say she has it in her genes, as her father, who is also a singer and formed part of the group The Quartet. His encouragement was all Jem (as she is affectionately called) needed to pursue her true love, singing. By the time she reached Junior High, Jemini was fully immersed in the craft.

JEMINI IS A STAR IN THE MAKING ossessing an absolutely charming personality, ton loads of natural poise, heaps of potential, and an outpouring of passion, Canadian songstress Jemini, embody the ‘four P’s’. A talented singer, Jemini, who rules under the sign of Gemini, was born to Jamaican parents in Canada, and honed her skills in

P

In her quest for the right musical genre, Jemini started out doing R&B, following in the musical footsteps of Whitney Houston and Mary J. Blige, whose soulful delivery and powerful vocals resonated with her. However, with reggae pumping through her veins, it was not surprising that Jemini later discovered a symbiotic bond with Lovers Rock. Therefore, since 2009, this Canadian songstress of Jamaican ancestry has been making reggae her music of choice, writing songs, seeking out the best producers and performing at events that are sure to secure her a strong fan base. And, Jemini has been receiving as much love as she

has been giving, as she steps out as a conscious flag bearer for reggae music. Her songwriting ability has also come under scrutiny as her effective lyrics and conscious messages have captured the attention of critics and fans alike. Jemini declares that she uses her personal experience or those of friends and family as the basis for her songs. “I cannot sing just for singing sake, I must sing from experience.” says Jem when asked about her lyrical content. With this connection to song, Jemini is easily able to write her own lyrics from a truthful stance to which all listeners can relate, especially those who have either lived or have had similar experience. With Jem there is no sugar coating! Undoubtedly, this multi-talented artist, who is also a nurse and a marketer, is poised to transcend the music scene with her soulful brand of Lover’s Rock and Roots Reggae music. Her debut track, “No Turning Back”, has been well received and is in rotation on reggae playlists world-wide. The video for “No Turning Back” was shot on location in New York by renowned director Berman Fenelus who has also worked

with the likes of Chris Brown, Busta Ryhmes, Gyptian and the Victoria Secret brand just to name a few. On the performance side, Jemini has spread her wings throughout North America and has worked on the Montreal Reggae Festival, the annual Birthday Celebration of HIM Haile Selassie in Toronto, opened for Rev Jesse Jackson in Denver Colorado, USA, Alpena Detroit Michigan in September for World Peace Day. Jemni was well received and embraced by the crowd in Michigan. She also received the York Region Police Award for Black History Month in Canada earlier this year from the Mayor. In Jamaica, Jemini has performed on CurryFest and is looking forward to doing more shows within the wider Caribbean. Passionate about philanthropy, Jem’s pet area is the empowering of women and children. On her recent trip to Jamaica, she distributed clothes and shoes to those to whom she has committed herself through her foundation. Jem’s Mantra: “I Will Stand Against All Odds”

Be yourself and follow good examples, remember the youths are listening and learning and following in your footsteps, so be positive in all you have to share. REGGAEX: Please tell the people something about Grandson that they don’t already know. GRANDSON: Grandson has a great and positive life ahead of him, he is honest and trustworthy, a great father and mentor. I am very happy with my life and share the joyous moments with everyone. I will never give up the fight. Live on. REGGAEX: Grandson, thank you for your time. We appreciate you taking the time out to chat with ReggaeXclusive. We wish you success in your music career.

Adopting their name from one of the twelve tribes of Israel, the band was formed in 2006 by the Smilan brothers. They shared the same passion for roots reggae and dub, with influences from a variety of music styles, like Ethiopian jazz and rare grooves from the 70’s, USA’s soul, funk and jazz, alongside with Israeli mizrahi (oriental) music. Zvuloon Dub System emerges from a multicultural middleeastern music scene. Similarly to the major producers of reggae, like Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry and King Tubby, the band is also keen on creating not just their own music but their own sound. All their tracks are produced, recorded and mixed in the band’s studio, representing a unique blend of a rich cultural heritage, which can be heard in the debut album, “Freedom Time”. The album consists of 9 previously unreleased original songs, and a groovy reggae version of

REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S INTERVIEWS even though at that time I was a ‘bald head’. REGGAEX: Tell us King, what would you term yourself to be? A Canadian Reggae Artist, a Jamaican Reggae Artist or an International Reggae Artist? K S: I am a Jamaican living in Canada singing international reggae music (laughs).

REGGAEXCLUSIVE CATCHES UP WITH KING SHADROCK FOR A CHAT REGGAEX: Greetings King Shadrock, it’s a pleasure linking up with you after such a long time. I knew you since back in the day when you were known as Little Buju, you certainly mashed up Toronto with your deep bass voice and energetic stage act. We certainly missed your presence on the stage in Toronto. Tell us when and where you disappeared to and tell us about your transition from Little Buju to King Shadrock. K S: Greetings Empress and one blessed love to you mother earth, as you already know I was greatly influenced by Buju Banton and especially since I could as you would say mimic his voice, I was dubbed Likkle Buju. Opening for many international acts, one of my trips led me to Montreal where I met a reggae group from Seychelles (Africa), at that time they were good friends with my brother so after the show I stayed around to see the vibes and just to enjoy the scenery, well one thing led to another, they were going on tour in Seychelles and invited me to be the opening act. That’s where the ball started really rolling; now here we are 5 African tours later. REGGAEX: When did you first start singing/deejaying and who or what inspired you to become a singer/dj? K S: I started like most reggae singers singing in church, but I was not just a singer I was a preacher, even now when I go back to Jamaica some people still call me ‘preacher’ so I would say I started at 11 years old in Garlands church. I find a little bit of inspiration from every artist from Bob Marley to Vybz Kartel because I know that the artist has something to say and if you listen carefully you will hear. REGGAEX: For real King, what is the name of your first single and who produced it? K S: My first single was called ‘’Know di Man’’ a Rasta song I did with High Energy Band at 1996 or 97, it’s a song about Rasta

REGGAEX: I love that, it rolls off the tongue too, I think I will use that one (laughs). Please tell us how you put together The Untouchable Band? Who are the members of the band and what part do they play? K S: Well, where should I start? It’s been 5 years since I’ve been trying to put together the ultimate reggae band, studying the music business and the rise and fall of many groups. I learnt a couple of things like a band must have the same goal and all must work together to achieve that and most importantly there must be one person who has the final say. Like we say back home “too much rat can’t dig one hole”. So we all have responsibilities individually, the musician come from all over the world USA, Europe, Africa, Morocco, Haiti, Canada, Guadeloupe and of course Jamaica. Their musical style ranges from jazz, rock, pop, funk, zouk, konpa and reggae. REGGAEX: Wow that is quite a mix of musical styles, tell us about some of your previous releases, who are some of the musicians you worked with. K S: I’ve work with Mr. Cooper, Mark Steele and Tonya P from Toronto just to name a few Toronto artists. I’ve worked with over 50 different artists in Montreal and Europe and Africa, I just released a new track on the Downtown Riddim called ‘’Nuh mek we goffa’’ which also features Sizzla, Turbulence, Lutan Fyah, Perfect and a host of Canadian based artists. I also have 2 singles with super reggae group Dub Inc. My brethren Prophecy Izes from Jamaica has featured me on his album called “Rise up”. King Shadrock & the Untouchable Band is now currently putting together our first album as a band, it’s gonna be hot! REGGAEX: Tell us where you see yourself and the Untouchable Band in the near future. K S: I see us as a driving force in reggae music representing Canada on an international level. REGGAEX: What do you think is the current state of reggae music in Canada and what do you think we can do to make it better? K S: I think that reggae is in a disgusting state, like for instance the rapper in America per say has a following and a support from their States or City. In our Town or City, which reggae artist in Canada can say that, no matter how hard we try? And then we have these so called reggae executives who buy and sell out di ting fi dem friends and clients dat nuh give poor artist a fighting chance and it doesn’t stop

there, we don’t really have a 24 hrs reggae show and this we need to fix. And the Juno Awards, what’s a best reggae recording award? The artists are not producers so even there, dem short change you. We need fi come together as a reggae community and make it happen for our artists and the reggae will be recognized in Canada. REGGAEX: Any upcoming projects, collaborations? Which producers / artists would you like to work with in the future? K S: Fortunately for us we always have something in the oven burning and on January 19th, 2013 Montreal Quebec will witness a show like never before at a venue owned by Circle du Soleil called la Tohu, myself and the Band are preparing something special for the reggae lovers in Quebec. La Tohu is the place you play before you make it. Yes, I would love to collaborate with Queen Ifrica, she is a great inspiration to us and as she says, ‘’in time like these, we really miss our hero’s”. In regards to producers, we are about producing our own music. REGGAEX: Give some words of wisdom to the upcoming reggae artists. K S: Dream, dream big, work hard, very hard and most of all believe in you cause if you don’t nobody will. REGGAEX: Tell your fans something about King Shadrock that they do not already know. K S: You might not know that I make the best jerk. REGGAEX: (laughs), Nope, I sure didn’t know that one. I must say a big thank you for taking the time out to chat with us King, we look forward to seeing King Shadrock & the Untouchable Band live in Toronto in the near future. K S: Thank you very much for having me, we are looking forward to being in Toronto for 2013.

REGGAEXCLUSIVE INTERNATIONAL ARTIST SPOTLIGHT GUYANESE MUSIC ICON PAMELA MAYNARD DEAD AT 58

September 4th, 1954 November 25th, 2012

chemotherapy. To cut a long story short, I did not get a chance to see Pam in the hospital because at the time when I was told of her illness the family was trying to keep it private and so I respected their wishes.

amela Maynard was a long time friend of mine. When I was just a little girl living in New Amsterdam, Berbice Guyana, I remember hearing this song playing in my parent’s house and on the radio, the powerful vocals of Pamela Maynard coming through the airwaves with her hit song “Lost, Lonely & Helpless”, this song haunted me from the day I learned that she was sick in the hospital battling breast cancer, right here in Toronto. It was in June of 2012 that I decided to contact Pam after a few months of not linking with her, I knew she was constantly travelling around performing, England, USA, Africa or the Caribbean. I tried her phone numbers, her email, her Facebook inbox, but to no avail. I figured she was away on tour or something so I didn’t worry about it. A week before she died, I received a call from popular Guyanese promoter Sherlock Shepherd, also owner of Celebrity Touch Hair Studio, who asked me when last I had talked to Pam, I promptly told him that I tried to contact her numerous times for the past few months so she could perform on the ReggaeXclusive Recognition Awards held on June 29th, 2012 but to no avail, and then went on to tell him that maybe she was on tour. He promptly told me that she was not on tour but very ill in the hospital. I was shocked and appalled when I further learned that she was fighting breast cancer and that she was going through

I later got a call the following Saturday, Nov 24th, 2012 from Sherlock again when he told me that I should go see Pam, I told him I will go see her on Monday 26th. He then said for me to try to go that same day as Pam wasn’t responding to treatment and it wasn’t ‘looking good’ for her. I told him to ‘stop talking stupidness’ that Pam would be fine and well for me to see her on Monday. On Sunday November 25th, 2012 I received a call from my sister Nicky who had seen a post on Facebook

P

that Pamela Maynard had died at 8:15AM that same morning. I immediately felt weak and sick to my stomach. This was surreal, Pam wasn’t dead, not the Pamela Maynard that I knew, it took me a while to come to grips with the fact that she was gone. The last time I saw and talked with her was at a show put on by Guyanese promoter Aubrey Langhorn. She was as full of life as usual and I just couldn’t wrap my head around the fact that she was so sick to the point of being dead now and I never even knew she was sick and battling breast cancer. This is a lady who stood up for me at a time when I didn’t even expect it. She had a kind heart and a good spirit. There are not enough words to express the sadness I felt when she died. I constantly heard her song “Lost, Lonely & Helpless” in my head, it would not go away, it brought tears to my eyes, I couldn’t hear that song without tearing up. I have finally come to terms with the fact that she is dead and I feel joy knowing that she is in a much better place, a place

Pamela Maynard, a sister, friend and idol, someone I have always looked to for inspiration.

and entertainer that the world is yet to discover. I will go so far to say she is one of the best from the Caribbean as well. She has seven genres of music comfortably under her roster of music on an International level. Being a music student at the University of Guyana my vision was to work with the best after graduation, and Pam was number one on the list. My first encounter with her was at the National Culture Centre in Georgetown, Guyana. She was there to perform for a Guyana Airways Event, somewhere around 1994-95. I was a young keyboard player/ student working with the Mischievous Guys Band who was booked for the show. When Pammy came on stage she came down from the roof hanging down on a rope, the whole place went bazaar fan crazy, I was blown away by her presentation, it was if I was seeing Michael Jackson, I had to stay focused and remember I was a part of this. What made it more memorable for me was when Pam came over to me and said “hi” with a charming smile.

She will be dearly missed. This great icon and Guyanese ambassador, like my father, the late great Eddie Hooper, Lady Guymine, and many more who have departed this earth, we the children of these great people must respect, honor, and carry on their legacy, with God’s kind blessings.

I met her in Canada again, at the Canadian Reggae Music Awards in 2001, I was there with my newly formed Band called ‘Xplosion’ which comprised of purely Jamaican musicians, I was the only Guyanese. I must mention Floppy the bass player who is from Manchester, Jamaica. When we were at the show and Pammy came on stage singing Misty Blue, she lay on the ground singing with emotion and expression, and the bass player followed her while playing the bass, then she got up and told him “let me see how you going to get up now”, and the whole crowd laughed because they knew he needed at least one of his hands to support his balance. Floppy never forgot that. (Continued on Page 17)

where she will feel no pain and stress, a place where she will be made whole again, a place where she will be singing with the heavenly choir. Pamela Maynard was one of Guyana’s brightest shining lights, she will never be forgotten, and her music and her legacy will live on. To Sonja and Samantha, her two daughters, you must be proud of your Mom, she was a force to be reckoned with musically and I’m sure she is looking down on you saying to dry your tears as she is in a better place. Rest in perfect peace Pamela, we love you.

ALL BLACK AFFAIR WITH CHUCK FENDA IN CALGARY!

Well known Calgary club Dj Bunny got the party started and the massive moving from early out. Dj Simple, a fresh new Dj on the scene showcased his skills for the culture crowd and proved that he is one to look out for!

One of Calgary’s best Dj’s, Dj Butta of Tru Sound started off the evening nicely with an upful set of roots and culture and lover’s rock. Love Harmony, Konsequence and Dj Kano were to follow taking the music in a different direction, on more of a dancehall tip.

Pammy was able to cross borders and boundaries through her music and had the ability to connect to people because of her grassroots upbringing. I can tell because I’m a Rastaman who have faced many stereo types from fellow Guyanese, but not Pammy, she had a sense of what life is all about on and off stage. We became friends since we met in Canada, she introduced me to one of her daughters Sonja whom I always saw with her, she told her daughter “this is a man of honor”, and her daughter started to call me Uncle Django. I laughed so much because she made me feel like an old man back then, but it was out of

Ringo Lee displayed his diversity, rinsing out many chart topping tunes in the urban music genre from dancehall to dirty south. The crowd loved the vibes! Big up Ray the promoter, Grumps Promotions and King George Entertainment! respect that she endorsed a Rastaman like that. So I really had Pam in my heart as a true friend, a sister and even family, she came to my house many times. My biggest project with Pam was in 2003 right after the Canadian Reggae Music Awards, she got a contract with Trimar Records to record a Gospel album and she chose me to work on the project. It was a blessing for me to have the opportunity to work with Pam in the studio. She is a perfectionist when it comes to music; she understands how a studio works in terms of studio time, producing, respect and patience. I must mention Winston Hewitt because he was the producer on the set, and he is the CEO of the Canadian Reggae Music Awards which was running for 20 years. That project enabled me to express the best of me musically so far, not taking away anything from anyone else whom I’ve worked with in the past, but just to say that Pam is extraordinary and every great musician would like to work with her. She was like Gladys Knights, Aretha Franklyn, Patty LaBelle, Dorothy Moore, and so on. The album we worked on is called “Sold out for Jesus”. It comprised of 13 beautiful tracks, all gospel, it is also showcased some of Pammy’s unknown vocal exponent and versatility, she touched all kind

of styles including country gospel. This is an album everyone should have. Jah bless Pammy. It was a successful project, I was able to buy my first car with part of the money from that project, and also see my work glorified by others in a big way because Pammy also won an award for that album. Pammy recognized me as an artist, in the sense that if anyone asked her for an artist to perform at an event, she would recommend me to people all over the world and tell them “check out D’jango Pan Fyah he is the best” and I said “wow, big up Pam.” I remember when she recommend me as an artist and Donna Makeda to perform at a Caribana event put on by Guyanese promoter Mr. Aubrey Langhorn a few years ago, that was huge for me as well because not many people recognized me as an artist. That’s how close I and Pammy was. Pamela Maynard contributed significantly to the music and entertainment industry in Guyana, the Caribbean, North America, Europe, Africa and even Asia, belching out tunes like “Lost Lonely & Helpless”, her hit song which she mostly known for. I would like to close by saying “Pammy I miss you but I will never forget you, throughout your life you inspired and also encouraged me a lot, thank you. Pammy, we have one

Chuck Fenda hit the stage late in the evening but delivered a lengthy and energetic performance. He sang many songs including Cry For My People, Are You Coming Over and his biggest tune Gash Dem to which he had the small but very appreciative crowd singing right along! A good time was had by all! more project in Zion when I reach there. Bless.”

This song is very special to Queen Pettreen because it’s about her experience in 2012. Queen Pettreen was single for a few years and one week after her aunt passed away she met a gentleman that helped her to heal the broken scars.

Q

She’s also in the studio working on her album. The album will be dedicated to the memory of her favorite aunt Dothlyn Smikle that recently passed away in June 2012 a few days after Queen Pettreen’s 30th Birthday. Queen Pettreen was really hurt when her aunt, who was like a mother to her died. She truly believes her aunt is her guardian angel because so many blessings are coming her way now. The album will

also have a song dedicated especially to her aunt. Queen Pettreen would like to thank all the fans that came out to see her perform in 2012. She would also like to thank her fans for being so patient waiting on the album and also for the motivation. Q u e e n Pettreen is a single mother of three children so at times it’s not always easy. She started back working full time at the Travel Agency because she has a diploma in Travel &Tourism so she can’t give that up fully. If you need airline tickets you can call her at 416615-2898 ext. 105. “It’s kind of hard doing music and working full time,” she said, but she promises to bring lots of good music for 2013. Queen Pettreen is looking forward to performing in Manchester, Jamaica in March 2013. Music is her passion and she has so much more to express through music. 2013 will be the year of great success for her. Queen Pettreen is holding the faith and putting her trust in the Almighty that He will continue to bless her music career. Queen Pettreen wants to thank Reggaexclusive Magazine for giving her an Award in June 2012.

REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S DEEJAY/SINGJAY SPOTLIGHT Portmore member was at Reggae Sumfest in 2011. His style, which he calls “Goth”, has given Tommy Lee a big push into the front line of dancehall. Many artistes have made songs about him, saying that he is a Devil worshiper and bad for the Christian youths, but that has only pushed Tommy Lee again, further into the limelight.

WHO IS REGGAE ARTISTE TOMMY LEE? By: Special Mix

His big hits like ”Psycho” and “Watch Dem” has shown he is not afraid to be different, just like his mentor “Vybz Kartel. His lyrical feuds with the Warlord “Bounty Killer” have people saying that he is either very smart or very, very stupid. Either way, Tommy Lee is surely enjoying more than his five minutes of fame.

replies to his calls from Snoop or his people. This has left him a little concerned and has now strained the friendship he thought he had with Snoop. Now, due to this lack of communication from Snoop Lion, Bunny Wailer has now commissioned a lawyer in the UK, who has written to Snoop Lion. Bunny told me that he wishes Snoop Lion would “Do The Right Thing”. I asked if Snoop had mentioned publicly that Bunny Wailer had named him Snoop Lion? He said that Snoop Lion had mentioned it in an interview, but Bunny said, to use the name commercially without any verbal and or written agreement was not welcomed at all.

just got off the phone with the reggae legendary icon and only living member of the original “Wailers”, the Honourable “Bunny Wailer”. I was also blessed to speak with “Family Man”, the bass player of the Wailers. As well as talking with Bunny about why the Wailers had parted and the emotions that he went through when Bob Marley and Peter Tosh died, we also spoke about the present situation he is dealing with, in regards to the new name of Snoop Dogg, now a Rastafarian and now called Snoop Lion. I told Bunny, I heard that he was the one who named Snoop Dogg, Snoop Lion. Bunny replied, that is true. I then asked, how did that name transpire? He said that Snoop came to Jamaica with the idea of doing a song with Bunny Wailer. Bunny agreed, but as they got talking Bunny said he did not feel comfortable calling Snoop, “Dog”. He said no person should call themselves Dog, so seeing that Haile Selassie surrounded himself with plenty lions he would then name Snoop Dogg “Snoop Lion”. Their friendship was great whilst Snoop Lion was in Jamaica. But that may have gone a little sour, as Snoop Lion decided on his return from Jamaica, to capitalise on the new name (other than for personal use) and has now commercialised the name Snoop Lion with no permission or compensation to Bunny Wailer.

I

I asked Bunny what is Snoop Lion’s response to this change? Bunny said that he has tried on many occasion to discuss this with Snoop Lion, but have had no

I mentioned to Bunny that, a documentary of Snoop’s rebirth as a Rastafarian called “Reincarnated” had its world premiere, September 2012, at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). I asked if he knew of this, seeing that he was also filmed in this documentary. He said he was not aware that a documentary was being made during Snoop Lion’s visit to Jamaica and he also did not sign any appearance clearance to be included in this documentary. Bunny acknowledges that without communication with Snoop Lion and some form of resolution, the use of the name Snoop Lion, the Bunny Wailer appearance in the documentary and any other monetary gains from the use of “Snoop Lion” could be halted, if the next step was court proceedings. This “Snoop Dogg/Lion” world exclusive was a bonus to my already enjoyable interview with Bunny Wailer. And in the next coming articles, I will bring you more insight into the world of Bunny Wailer and the Wailers history, both past and present...

THE LION OF AFRICA KWESI SELASSIE wesi Selassie aka “The Lion” was born and raised in Sekondi-Takoradi, the capital twin-city of the Western Region of Ghana in West Africa. However, both his parents hail from Agona Nsaba in the Central Region of Ghana. At a tender age of 11 years, he began singing and playing the guitar. He would simply sit under palm trees, exploding with curiosity while experimenting with wires placed over empty cans to simulate the guitar. Other instruments, such as the bass guitar, drums and percussion aroused his interest, and he endeavored to learn how to play each of them. It would not be long before he was dubbed the “musical prince” by his Takoradi secondary school mates and everyone in his hometown.

K

Strongly influenced by his mom and dad, Kwesi decided to

move to London, in pursuit of a law career. Like most parents, Mr. Kweku Sackey-Selassie and his wife, the Queen Mother Nana Baah Agyekum 1, encouraged Kwesi to strive for a professional career. However, his drive to become a musician was far too strong to be reversed. After three years, Kwesi ended his preliminary studies in law much to the disappointment of his parents and returned to Ghana to embrace his first love, music. It was upon his return to Ghana that Kwesi earned the title “The Lion of Africa.” He reappeared on the music scene with the rage of a true African Lion. Kwesi began singing and playing guitar with many spectacular bands all over West Africa such as Afro Soul System led by Jean-Claude Bamogo in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso; Ndeep from Dakar, Senegal; 22 Band of KanKan, Guinea; the legendary Bembaya Jazz of Conakry, Guinea; The Scorpion Band of Barra Village, Gambia; The System Band from Freetown, Sierra Leon; The Lantics Band and the Osabarima Band fromTakoradi, Ghana. One of the most memorable performances was in Nzerekore, Guinea, West Africa, for a traditional ceremonial event in honor of President Lansana Conte. Maturing as an artist, Kwesi began writing, arranging, and producing songs in his native language Fanti as well as in English, French, and ten other African dialects, making him the preeminent multi-lingual artist originating from Africa. He also began traveling and performing around the world. In 1990, Kwesi was invited by Mr. Mario Gauthier (a friend who later became his manager) to Quebec City, Canada where Kwesi would begin the upward trend in the global music industry. Kwesi has maintained the original blend of his music comprised of grinding highlife (original music from Ghana), Reggae, Ragga, and a touch of European influence, as what he calls Highlife-Dub Reggae. His musical themes deal with emancipation of all people, love, peace, unity, spirituality, human rights, and socio-economic justice, a.k.a. conscious reggae music.

“Judgment Day” as the Top Reggae Album of the Year. In November 1999, Kwesi took the African Music Awards in Toronto, Canada by storm as he was nominated in four of ten categories for Best Album, Composer, Release, and won Best Producer of the Year award for his fourth album “Judgment Day.” Kwesi has toured in various parts of the world, including Canada, USA, Africa, Germany, Holland, France and Israel. According to fans of “The Lion,” Kwesi is an artist of exceptional character, charisma, incredible enthusiasm, and has the ability to mesmerize music fans with high flying energy. With ten acclaimed CD albums to his credit, Kwesi was nominated for “Reggae Recording of the Year” at the 2007 Canadian JUNO Awards for his last CD album “SURVIVAL.” Kwesi is among a handful of multi-lingual reggae artists uniquely bridging the African and Caribbean cultures.

GEORGE BARRETT’S REGGAE SHOW ON CFRO 100.5FM AND THE ROCKERS SHOW CITR 101.9FM (Continued from Sept. 2012 Issue) is works are acknowledged internationally, his selfless service widely respected. There are very few broadcasters who have enjoyed such a long and fertile career as George Barrett, and I’m proud to call him ‘friend’”. -Roger Steffens, Chairman, Reggae Grammy Committee; Founding Editor the Beat.

According to Denise Jones, CEO of Jones and Jones Productions in Toronto, “George continues to play a vital role in branding reggae on the west coast. With his knowledge of venues and of course playing the music and promoting shows, he was integral to helping us mount reggae tours across Canada for Freddie McGregor, Culture, Leroy Gibbons, Fujahtive and short drops with Culture Shock and Chester Miller. As founding chair of the reggae committee at the JUNOS, George also helped to get the word out to west coast artists and helped to make the reggae category beyond the east/central borders.”

have never listened to real reggae music; it opens the door for music such as Bob Marley, Culture, Peter Tosh, Third World, Jimmy Cliff, and Luciano to name a few, to be listened to. Unfortunately, the negative aspect to this current state of reggae and dancehall music is the lyrics these young artists are using. It is not acceptable! The music itself is dance music and young people love it. I am a radio host, DJ and selecta, I have to play some of it, but today reggae dancehall music is all about the bling bling and the money. Producers have to be held accountable for the music that they produce.

George had a hand in the career of one of Canada’s finest reggae bands, the Sattalites and worked closely with Leroy Sibbles while he was in Vancouver. That was a long time ago and times have changed as has the music. When asked to comment on the current state of reggae and where he’d like to see the music in the next 30 years, here what Barrett had to say? “The current state of reggae music has improved over the years, but one has to always look back to where the music came from. In the early years of the music, there was Ska, Rock Steady, Reggae and now, Dancehall; really and truly the music has changed so rapidly. The so-called dancehall music of today is good in some ways-it has opened the door for other people who may

I don’t think I’ll be around in the next 30 years, but if I am, I would be pleased to see somebody start a real reggae festival in Vancouver! I would like to see more venues open up for reggae music and have more commercial radio stations playing the music. I like that on radio you are able to reach a wide variety of people that you normally wouldn’t be able to reach and you can dialogue about music and cultures, while having fun.” George Barrett Radio Shows Sundays Rockers Show 12Pm /3Pm Citr 101.9 Fm

“Mr. Denny Roberts aka Quantruss High Power Sound was like a brother to me. Everything I know and have learnt in reggae music is because of this man. He is my father in reggae music. Mr. Bumpa, bad bwoy selecta, the second half of Quantruss Sound, showed me the power of our music and how we ‘drop and run tune’. Not many DJs can test Bumpa, this man is a lion.”

JAM RADIO’S STEF RANKS tef Ranks was born and raised in a small town called Darlaston in the West Midlands Region in the UK on the 26th of February, 1969. Growing up as a teenager he listened to mod n ska music. Upon reaching his late teens at 17 years old, he started to get interested in DJing and became a regular feature each week in his home town. At the age of 20, Stef started to get into the Pirate Radio Stations, first starting with a station called BCRL, a Black Country Radio Station. “These were good times as these were my years in musical college,” said Stef.

REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S INTERVIEW the years it became Echo Minott, Half Pint, Luciano, oh so many, and then to see artists like Donna Makeda and Queen Pettreen has really given me the boost as another female Reggae artist, it has been keeping my dream alive. In Jamaica, I told my new manger Janet Giannone that I really want to record my song now… “Step It up Baby”.

REGGAEXCLUSIVE CHATS WITH LADY J REGGAEX: Greetings and blessings Lady J, please tell the world who Lady J is and where she comes from. LADY J: My name is Janet Ryder I am Canadian born lived with my mom as a single mother growing up 9 of us .I am a mother of many, it takes a village to grow a child, too many to name. I have lived in Scarborough most of my life, I’ve always loved reggae music from a child. Right now I am the Host of flexradio.net coupled with Rastafest, SistaFest and proud to be doing this as a volunteer. I am loving the moves, we have big plans for the show which we are now on our 30th show, I will make it like no other, I will keep the great vibes and the blessings of music in any flavor alive and ‘live’ to the internet world. REGGAEX: I have known you for quite some time now and have always seen you promoting Reggae music and Reggae artists. Recently, you went one step further by becoming Canada’s newest female reggae recording artist. Congratulations. Tell us who or what inspired you to start singing and why reggae? LADY J: Well first, thanks for the big up, my inspiration was from Bob of course, and then over

REGGAEX: Tell us about the making of the single you are working on right now in the studio. What is the name of it, who are the other artists featured on it, who wrote and produced it, who are the musicians you are working with on this project and which studio are you are recording the single at. LADY J: My song, called “Step it up Baby” was a little personal. I met a man, he swept me off my feet and went away never to see him again. I wrote the lyrics and had a special way I wanted It sung, so I found the artists I wanted to work with. Why these two men? These two men have great spirits. The artist included on my first single are: Canadian Lady J, Norval Edgehill and Nitty Kutchie. I am recording at Chop Chop Studio in Negril to voice with the other artists on the riddim very shortly. Daddy Sizzla was a big part of this single recording, he took me to the studio and made me sing, thanks Daddy Sizzla, he will soon be here in Canada. REGGAEX: I heard a piece of the new single and I was blown away, I never knew you were such a good singer, you have a very smooth, melodic voice. Please express to us how you felt and what your thoughts were when you were in the ‘voice booth’ recording your very first single. Also, what or who made you collaborate with Norval and Nitty Kutchie on the song? LADY J: Ha ha ha…I am still in shock seeing the people’s reaction to my new song; it just puts tears in my eyes as my song is truly from my heart. Love is great, but be real, ya dun no everyone needs to “step it up”, the teachers, parents, police, doctors, the list goes on. Most of

all I was scared of what people would think but I was so excited to know that I, Janet Ryder will record a song finally. The other artists are my personal friends and they knew what I wanted on my song so I choose them both. It is ‘mad’ and a very happy song about just stepping it up no matter what you are doing. REGGAEX: Being a player in the reggae music business for quite some time now, tell us what your thoughts are on the state of reggae music in Canada and what you think can be done to make it better. LADY J: You’re right I have been in the business for over 30 years doing promotional work. I am ENE Promotions (Entertainment Network Enterprize) and Touch-Me Taxes. It is all about the tools Donna, everyone has them, and it’s just to know how to use them. So the sky is the limit, we have all set our own stepping stones, now it’s to see who follows. Music is the message, in all music we all have a message it just needs to be heard in each and everyone’s own way. REGGAEX: Where does Lady J see herself as a Reggae Recording artist in the near future? LADY J: I am telling you straight this is not the only song you will get from me. REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S INT’L. ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

KONSHENS Konshens has been mashing up the airwaves with his brand of Dancehall music. With mega hit song “Gyal Ah Bubble”, Konshens has been in great demand and is constantly touring the world. This artist is not only an excellent songwriter, but he is also a very dynamic and electrifying stage act. Since arriving on the Dancehall scene, Konshens has been ‘taking life’ in the dance and stirring up great excitement whever he appears. With his ‘signature colored hair’, Konshens is ‘current’ and ‘up to

the time’.

SPICE The Dancehall Princess Spice has been tearing up the Dancehall Arena since she entered it. She has toured extensively and released numerous songs. She has collaborations with various dancehall artists including Vybz Kartel who released their monster hit song “Ramping Shop”. Spice is not only an excellent lyricist, but her style and flow is ‘off the chain’. Her stage act is very raunchy but entertaining nonetheless. Spice will be appearing on Sting 2012.

TOMMY LEE

BUSY SIGNAL Busy Signal is now out of prison and back home making more hit songs. He recently released a single with part of the lyrics boasting that ‘everybody tun artist’ which is a very thought provoking song but true nonetheless. Busy released hit songs like “One More Night” and had the ladies ‘weak’ with his sexy video and deep bass voice. This artist is already a shining star and will not be deterred by all the negative vibes that are coming his way. He has ‘brushed’ it all off and continues to shine.

Tommy Lee recently released a single entitled “Uncle Demon” which is not only taking the airwaves by storm, but stirring up huge controversy the world over where Dancehall music is played. Comments have ranged from him being ‘evil’ to him being ‘illuminati’, but this does not stop this young, ‘hot’, rising dancehall star, he continues to release songs. One of his previously released songs “Link pon Chain” created quite a stir worldwide and was the song that we believe gave him his recognition.
