REGGAE APARTHEID CANADA
T
he movie “The Matrix” affected so many because it is perceived as a ‘people’s rebellion’ against the establishment and seeing the world for what it is and living in reality as opposed to the horsecrap fed to us by “The Source” ~ every government on planet earth. Interesting at times how life imitates art or vice versa. In my world of this Matrix, or as I see it clearly now as apartheid Canada = The Source, has us running on the hamster wheel, powering the system akin to batteries, paying our taxes and keeping the engine running. Yes I am blessed to be employed with an opportunity to pay my bills and live somewhat comfortably yet saying this does not make it any less of a reality or any less the truth. Why Canadian apartheid? Reggae musicians performing their craft in Canada are not even remotely a part of the Canadian music infrastructure! Major record labels here are responsible for selling American products to
FLY JAMAICA AIRWAYS
Canadian consumers. There are no programs set up to promote Canadian talent. No other genre gets any support either, yet reggae gets even less than those styles of music. Sure, sure, they’ll tell you about a Factor program set up to give thousands for making music ~ making albums and demos ~ yet will give hundreds for marketing, against the millions spent on major artists and no chance of getting radio airplay. So what’s the point?
Canadian Music Week has nothing for reggae music! NXNE nada! In over fifty years of performing / producing reggae music in Canada, there is no outlet that considers reggae as “Canadian”. Even as citizens we are still considered as Jamaicans with music indigenous to our land of birth. Some like me feel very much at home here yet know that we are not “Canadian” as it pertains to our art, as we seem to be constantly reminded of our heritage in very blatant as well as very subtle ways. Being in this country for close to forty years now, one views things even more objectively, given a vast amount of information through the media and the real “truth” surfaces eventually. I look at black owned night clubs to see how many have been around for thirty, to forty, to fifty years, successfully operating at a profit for any length of time and possibly franchising reggae like Tim Horton’s or Canadian Tire. Quick answer...there are none! All face the harassment from the police or the LCBO as
if we are supposed to accept this derogatory, degrading behavior. We do! We must accept it as there is no recourse in this apartheid Canadian regime. Some who read this won’t buy into “apartheid Canada” because you are unaware that the form and structure for apartheid was created and developed here ~ called the Indian Act. Look it up if you don’t believe me ~ then taught to South Africa during the 1940s. Yes, The Indian Act is successful at keeping our native population/s placid, cooperative and pliable, which fortunately some are not; as they inform us of atrocities that they face and WE ALL turn a blind eye as the system of apartheid teaches us to ignore those who are non white. A painful truth that many white Canadians deny yet no less true! Just ask yourself what you know or care about our native people? Apartheid systems are expert at ignoring those who they need to degrade. This “system” is one where the degradation begins in a “third world” nation as our international businesses on our soil are owned and run by white and light skinned Jamaicans as well as Americans / Canadians / English interests that are also all white. Even in our own countries we black people own no banks, no hotels, no beaches, no bauxite companies, no sugar cane patches, no major corporations! We are easily made docile and compliant when we arrive in Canada, The
U.S. or England as we are already used to serving white masters. Through the abject poverty, guns are introduced to scared, hungry, illiterate, desperate people by our own very corrupt politicians on behalf of white masters we learn to murder amongst ourselves. Rastafari is not compliant! Rastafari are truth seekers! If reggae music is to progress in this base of apartheid, we must follow what the music does. Just play it! No need to seek accolades or “respect” from our apartheid white masters. Just play it and dance to it! Fulljoying it as a group as we always have. Our constant need to blame someone else, apartheid, whitey or the system is also a part of our issue, stunting our own growth. We LOVE to make excuses for failure. Pointing out the apartheid system that is Canada is knowledge! Education! A focus on a hurdle! This ‘system’ is only a hurdle. Identifying and educating oneself or the community is necessary in order to get over, through, around or under it. In the past we have identified it then come to a full stop, allowing ourselves to just shrug our shoulders and quit. Come to a full stop, hence the music has never been elevated here in Canada. It took me close to forty years to figure this out! I have much respect for a few performers of reggae music in this country and have been encouraging a “reggae collective” of our own for those who know and love the music yet wish to do the simplest thing...Dance.

REGGAEXCLUSIVE HEALTH WATCH
A ROOT CAUSE OF DIS-EASE: POOR DIGESTION By: Trisha Smith – Registered Nutritionist, Certified Herbalist www.aderoherbals.com 647 702 6620
S
o it’s your first date and you have waited so long to go out with this special person. You take your seats at the restaurant, sitting her first of course and as you sit down, you pass gas! Embarrassed, you hold your head down praying the smell doesn’t reach her and hoping she didn’t hear anything. There’s nothing you can do to take back the moment and you pray it doesn’t happen again for the rest of the night. Haven’t we all experienced this in one way or the other? Occasional gas,
bloating, belching, stomach pain, food allergies, constipation and gurgling (noisy stomach) may feel normal because everybody does it, right? Wrong. There are presently 110 million people in North America suffering from these symptoms and are not being informed that poor digestion is the root cause of many common inflammatory and systemic diseases. Your digestive system is made up of the mouth, stomach, small and large intestine along with the liver and pancreas. The digestive tract is the place where food and liquid are broken down and absorbed to be utilized as energy by the body. Did you know the digestive system is more important than the immune system? How is that you ask? Because in order for the immune system to function at its best, your digestive system has to be able to absorb all the nutrients through your small intestine so your immune system can operate appropriately. The gastrointestinal tract (digestive system or G.I tract) is made up of 100 trillion live bacteria that line our gut, there job is to
protect the system by allowing nutrients to permeate the small intestine while keeping toxins out. Whenever you experience one of the symptoms above, it is a sign that your gut flora (good bacteria) is imbalanced and digestion is poor. Causes of poor digestion include feeding babies solid food at an early age, regularly consuming refined sugar products, acidic foods like coffee, alcohol and very spicy food. Decreased fibre intake and an overuse or consistent uses of pharmaceutical drugs (including birth control) are all culprits to the digestive tract. Lack of exercise, overeating and poor food combining can also inhibit proper G.I function. How well our body, digests, absorbs and assimilates food will determine one’s digestive soundness and ultimately, overall health. So what can we do to reverse the onset of disease and start building a healthy body from the root up? Stay away from chlorinated water (tap water) as it kills good bacteria in the gut. Use a filtration system or drink natural spring water. Water should always be Alkaline. Probiotic complex (should be refrigerated), these
supplements will help you produce enzymes to digest your food and replenish your gut with good bacteria. It will also help with constipation and flatulence. Food Combing When certain foods are eaten together, it is broken down and absorbed more easily by the body. This eases the toxic load improves digestion and greatly; Fermented Foods – Kefir, sourdough, yogurt and much more. These foods contain B vitamins and Folic acid, which are necessary for intestinal health. These foods also increase absorption of nutrients through intestines and supports intestinal mucosa. Avoid External Stressors – If you suspect that you are allergic to a certain food (i.e. every time you eat chocolate, you itch), cut it out of the diet completely, as your body cannot handle it, hence the reaction. Love yourself – It is a proven scientific fact that affirmations can help shift ones process of thinking from negative to positive, which results in a different and healthier body chemistry. Affirmation for health, “Every cell in my body is healthy and pain free. My body is full of life and energy”. Say this every morning upon rising.

MS REEVA’S CORNER / VIEWS Hop. It’s not that Hip-Hop artists are not aware of the Jamaican industry or that labels aren’t aware of the talent, but the product being presented isn’t something for the global masses. Within Hip-Hop music, dancehall is present, but it’s older dancehall; we see the Hip-Hop artists utilizing old rhythms and putting it in their songs.
LET’S TALK MUSIC BUSINESS
A
quarterly column written by Reeva Ann Proctor of Montreal, Canada; “Let’s Talk Music Business” is an article directed to those interested in the reasoning of a young entrepreneur in the Jamaican Pop-Culture industry. Where does Dancehall music think its going? Do you ever sit and wonder where Dancehall music is going? Can you think of the last Dancehall hit that makes everybody, young and old, stand up and call out “pull up!”? Is dancehall a dying breed? We have seen the changes over the years; the rhythms have become 100% electronic, the elements of a classic dancehall beat, gone, and lyrics becoming even more vulgar. Artists have even started to take on fashion sensibilities of the American Industry, with that, slowly; we see that dancehall music is becoming more and more like the Hip-Hop industry. The saddest thing about this change is, Hip-Hop was born from the Dancehall scene. A Jamaican utilized the sound system techniques and created the beginning of Hip-
I sit here, on the outside of Jamaica. I would do anything to take some of our top Dancehall artists and bring them here for more than a week. I would like to take them and venture outside the Island communities here in Montreal or in Toronto, let them hear what is playing in our clubs, on our radios and what music videos are playing on T.V. Their songs just aren’t hitting our markets. What they would hear when they come into these clubs is remixes of classic dancehall riddims such as “Sleng Teng” or “Applause” and they would hear songs by top dancehall artists from the late 90’s and early 2000’s, songs like Beenie Man’s “Who am I”, Mr. Vegas’s “Heads High”, and Buju Banton’s “Action”. I can’t forget that yes, some of Dancehall’s newer music would play and I could tell you what would play. We would probably hear a 1 or 2 songs by Vybz Kartel, maybe “Only Man She Want” from Popcaan, Konshen’s “Gal a bubble”, definitely one of Gyptian’s songs and throw in “Watch out for This” by Busy Signal, but face it more popularly known because of Major
Lazer. When is the last time we heard of a “new-age” Dancehall artist headlining and selling out their own show of 10,000, even 5000 people in U.K, Europe, Canada, or the U.S? Half of the artists don’t come nearly enough to build themselves in our markets because they all want $10,000 after one hit (that usually didn’t even hit billboard), don’t forget that they also want the manager, road manager, publicist, friend, and of course the girlfriend who needs a plane ticket as well. Oh, and they all need separate hotel rooms. I could talk hours about the demands our so called “International” artists want. Meanwhile they haven’t even sold 50 copies of their single, yet alone album. I’ve seen Artists come out here while on a mini-tour of two shows and are looking past media outlets, whether big or small because they don’t want to be bothered, or they are “too big” to be featured in this magazine, or that magazine, or so and so’s YouTube channel… I’ve been asked myself how much I was willing to pay for an Interview! I think it’s time that Dancehall artists and industry professionals ask themselves, “Where are we going with this?” Because I believe if people keep catering to these attitudes and support the changes that are happening we are going to lose what Dancehall really has to offer.

LEGENDARY DJ RANKIN’ JOE
W
hen mentioning the pioneering DJs of the 70’s, usually the names U-Roy, Prince Jazzbo, King Stitt, Dennis Alcapone and others are heard most. Rankin’ Joe is another of these artists who deserves the recognition of their talents and contribution to reggae music over the years. He made a rare appearance in Long Beach, California with singer Michael Palmer last November, and these two tore down the house with hit after hit. Joe recorded singles for various producers such as Bunny Lee, Pete Weston, Watty Burnett, Sly and Robbie, Bunny Diamond and for Sonia Pottinger’s famous High Note label. Rankin’ Joe was introduced to Joe Gibbs with whom he did singles Leave Fe Me Girl Arlene and Bald Head Bridge featuring Culture. In 1977, Rankin’ Joe was voted the most popular DJ of that year. In 1980, Joe was offered a deal to tour London. In 1981 - 82 he toured America, Canada, Germany and the West Indies. Stay tuned for more on Foundation DJ Rankin’ Joe.
LOUIE RANKIN
L
ouie Rankin is a J a m a i c a n dancehall reggae artist, DJ, producer and actor. He was born in St. Thomas, Jamaica and grew up in Rockfort, Warika Hill and East Kingston. Louie started his career with hits such as ‘Poison’, ‘Don Doc’, ‘Vibes Inna Me’, ‘Boom Bastic’ and ‘The Typewriter’. The latter was a huge crossover hit and still to this day gets airplay! As a matter of fact, Mr. Rankin has been busy in the studio so keep your ears peeled, because an album will drop sometime in the near future! Rankin also performed in noticeable acting roles as a Jamaican “gangsta” in the movies Shottas and Belly. He is probably the only reggae artist to be a member of the Screen Actors Guild (SAG.). Louie has never taken acting classes and credits his natural talent for allowing him to make the strides that he has made thus far. Currently, Louie Rankin has many projects on the go. Two movies to watch out for in the near future are ‘We Run These Streets’ (2014) and ‘Ice City’ (2015).

REGGAEXCLUSIVE CHAT UP CLOSE & PERSONAL WITH CHELSEA STEWART REGGAEX: Greetings Chelsea, first off, please tell the people who Chelsea Stewart is and where she was born. CS: I was born in Toronto, Canada. I am a vocalist that was exposed to a variety of genres at an early age. We lived in Montreal when I was younger, my Mom used to play all types of music in the house. You name it, she played it. In the morning, she’d play God Bless the Child by Billie Holiday and in the night she’d play Conte Partiro by Andrea Bocceli to put me to sleep (an Italian classical song). That is reflected in the music I sing today. I studied classical and jazz music in high school and continued my jazz education at Humber College. I sing whatever genre works best for the songs I write, whether it’s jazz, gospel, pop, R&B, soul, or reggae. I tried to showcase that knowledge in my single Over You. REGGAEX: How long ago did you start out in the music business and why? CS: I officially started right after graduating from the regional arts program at Mayfield Secondary School, about 3 years ago. I haven’t regretted that decision since. I enjoy having the freedom to work for myself, sharing the gift of music and bringing joy to others by doing so. It would be a shame for me to sit on the talent that God gave me and not use it to my advantage. REGGAEX: We have followed Chelsea Stewart for quite a few years now and have seen the gradual upward move that she has been making, tell us who your label and your manager is and what are some of the things they have been doing to take your career to the next level. CS: Upward move? Thanks for saying that Donna it means a lot. Karen Stewart (my Mom) is my Manager or what some like to call ‘Momager’. She studied marketing among other things at Concordia University, so she definitely knows what she’s doing. It was her crazy idea to go on the road and sell my promotional reggae/jazz/gospel/R&B/pop CDs. She said if Jay Z and Master P can sell CDs
from their car on the streets, so can we. Within two and a half years, we received donations for over 40,000 of those CDs by going to various Caribbean stores and other locations all over the GTA, from Orangeville to Ajax! We started out in Brampton, at Jamaica House Kitchen and Gems Jerk. Eventually, we created a street team that helped us along the way. Being on the road allowed us
t o network with people, book shows, and get their feedback. At one point, everyone kept asking “When are you going to release something original?” That is one of the many reasons I’m proud of my current single ‘Over You’! REGGAEX: Over You is tearing up the airwaves and the charts in Canada and other parts of the world. Tell us about the making of the single. CS: The making of ‘Over You’ was a long, drawn out process, but I wouldn’t have it any other way because it was a learning experience. My Mom woke up one morning, and heard the first line of the song in her head, “You say you love me, but I have my doubts”. She decided to write the lyrics and melody to the Taxi riddim, but we realized that original lyrics
would benefit from original music. I then added the hook; arranged the song and did the background vocals during a rough recording on my Mom’s Mac Book Pro. We went to a few musicians before we found the right ones to bring our lyrics alive. I thank God for the day we met up with Jonathan (bass, keys, drums) and David (keys, engineer). Together, we made gold. I’m so happy that ‘Over You’ is getting so much love on the road, and on air! Especially from my local radio stations CHRY 105.5 FM and G98.7 FM! I knew I loved it, but the love I’ve been getting from people is unexpected and I’m so grateful. For five weeks in a row, Over You was #1 on Puggy Simeon’s Canadian Top Five on CHRY’s Friday Morning Reggae Review, and has been steadily climbing from #10 to #4 on Carrie Mullings Rebel Vibez Top Ten Countdown also on CHRY 105.5 FM. Thanks to everyone for making this possible. REGGAEX: We know that you have been traveling and promoting yourself, tell us of some of the countries you visited and the reception you got. CS: My Mom and I were blessed with the opportunity to travel to Hong Kong & China to promote myself as an artist in September and October of 2013. I performed at about 8 venues that included 5 and 7 star hotels like the Shangri La and the Four Seasons Hotel in Hong Kong. Asia loves black people and our music, I’ve heard about it, but it was really cool to see that for myself. The people there were fascinated by everything about me, my hair, my skin, but most importantly, my voice. Unfortunately, ‘Over You’ wasn’t finished by then, so we couldn’t promote it there. But we made up for lost time when we went to Cannes, France for Midem and London, England in February. After my performance in Cannes, I was blown away by the amount of support received from the people at the show. Just about every person in the venue bought a CD! In London, we went to the streets of Brixton where there is a strong Jamaican community. It was so funny to hear the British patois. I loved every bit of Brixton, (SEE PAGE 21)

PRODUCER / PROMOTER / ENGINEER SPOTLIGHT
ROKWON PRODUCTIONS
I
n spring of this year, Rokwon Productions, teamed up with blazing hot international reggae artists Iwayne and Kabaka Pyramid in Kingston Jamaica, releasing a massive collaboration featuring the duo on their latest riddim called Rokwon Drop Riddim. Iwayne and Kabaka Pyramid seamlessly delivered a smashing hit. The track is entitled “Versatile” and boasts Iwayne, an international reggae star in his own right, known for such hits as “Can’t Satisfy Her” and “Living in Love” and Kabaka Pyramid, a rising young star helping to keep reggae alive with hits like his “Never Gonna Be a Slave” which debuted on MTV. The combination of their melody work well together, Iwayne with his high octave singing compliments Kabaka’s bold clear voice. The song also delivers a strong social commentary for today’s youth,
and chants positive livity and enhancement for all. The rhythm has an old school vibe and takes us back to the days of Marley and Tosh when reggae made you feel good, making a classic hit in today’s music genre. Versatile has been slowly gaining success as the official music video was recently released on You Tube ,with hits of almost 10 000 views, which further cements the song’s popularity and comments from major internet reggae sites have been mostly positive. The track has also received major airplay on Jamaican stations, Fame FM, IRIE FM, New York’s Hot 97 and several stations across Europe, Africa, North America and other parts of the Caribbean. The riddim was produced by Roger ‘Govany’ Robinson alongside Fire House Crew Band (Sizzla Kalonji’s backing band) and mixed by mix engineer Damion ‘Matic’ Hill, at Backroom Studios in Toronto Canada. Also featured on this riddim compilation EP are the likes of well known reggae sensations Fanton Mojah and Luciano, the upcoming and talented Spring Wata. G’ovany is also featured on it as an artist. The full album or singles are featured on Rokwon Drop Riddim EP and can be purchased on iTunes. Get your digital copy today and be sure to check this one out, it’s bound to be a favourite on your playlist this year!

verett “Natty” Cooper is a successful, self-taught musician and producer, based in Toronto, Canada. Natty drew much of his inspiration from his father, Everett Cooper, the well known businessman and reggae producer known as King Culture. In 2001, Natty produced music for a Toronto based record label called Up North Records where he gained notoriety for the popular single ‘How We Roll’ performed by Tef & Don. Natty later transitioned from Up North Records to pursue his music production career as a sole entrepreneur doing freelance music production. Natty produced songs for various artists such as Duvel’s ‘I Ain’t’ released in 2002 as well as Jordan Francis aka JMAN with his single ‘No Matter’. Natty’s resume also boasts production for international artists including Bounty Killer,
Having been in the music business for a few years, and with some hot singles under his belt, Natty joined a new and upcoming record label, AFlash in late 2003; AFlash later became Sound Street Records Inc. and expanded their roster of artists. In 2005, Natty and members of his So What Productions team separated from Sound Street Records Inc. to pursue projects with Toronto’s new aspiring artists. Subsequently, in 2006 Natty’s independent production company NattysBeats was born. Artists such as Don Skilachi, with his popular singles ‘Born 2 H.U.S.T.L.E’ and ‘How We Roll’ featuring Khesan were also added to Natty’s repertoire. However, NattysBeats officially launched in late 2006 with the smoking hot single release ‘I Do’ by new male R&B artist S Davis, and produced by yours truly. Going forward, ‘I Do’ continues to receive much attention from listeners around the world. Stay tuned for more NattyBeats productions at nattysbeats.com.

PRODUCER / PROMOTER / LABEL SPOTLIGHT ROYALTY DUB RIDDIM COMPILATION - THE MAKING OF A MONSTER! By: Brian Kotler - Executive Producer of Indie Rootz Records
T
his adventure began in the summer of 2013. Listening to a Supertramp song called “Sooner or Later” ©1998 while on my way to the studio. I was just loving the vibez as I always do listening to my “progressive rock music” LOL! I quickly made Bobby (producer at Indie Rootz) take vibez too. Bobby said “That sounds like a dub!” And with that inspiration and teamwork the Indie Rootz Dub riddim was made just a few short weeks later. While the riddim is full of vibez, live instruments and an excellent composition, we felt the name was kind of lame so it was then changed to Royalty Dub. After already producing 4 compilation albums, with the last 2 each having 25+ artists on them, this had to be different. We decided to keep it tight, with lots of international
artists and hand pick a few others and keep it between Jamaica and Canada. We wanted talent and artists who will push and promote as hard as we do. One hand can’t clap! Also, we only wanted positive vibes and no slackness on our album and that’s not so easy these days! While our intial list of artists evolved and changed, the end result is simply amazing. Right away Aphtanan (an Indie Rootz Artist) was on it! Mikey General loved it but he wanted to do a combination with a next artist. I suggested Meagan Simone (USA) and after checking her music out, Mikey agreed! This was the only way a non-Jamaican or Canadian could get on. While talking to Mikey on Skype, he talked to Luciano, and before you knew it, Luciano was on! I have to say that dealing with Luciano was blessed! For such an international superstar, Luci is so humble and reasonable! He is “The Messenger”! And he had heard good things about Indie Rootz Records in Jamaica. While in Jamaica last year, I met up with Jimmy Riley. He loved the riddim and was on it so quickly that he voiced while I was still in JA! In fact he even asked me if his protégé Synnus could also do a song. Never expected that! Back in Canada, with help and the blessings of Jan G of the Heart of Empress label, we got Norval Edgehill and his brother
Mikey Melody on board. Funny thing that while I was in Jamaica, I was staying on the same street as where Mikey Melody lives and I never met up with him there! Then there is Donna Makeda. We have been working with Donna from the beginning of Indie Rootz Records. What started out as a business relationship has evolved into family! Indie Rootz fits Donna perfectly! Lady G! Both Bobby and I love Lady G! There was no way Lady G was not going to be on this. She came through big time! She did a song (combination) with this hot new artist from Jamaica called Shae Mill. This is going to be a big tune! Lady G went to one of the best studios in Jamaica to voice and even they were impressed with the production! Lady G even got one of her long time artist friend called Hitman Wally to also voice a song! Nuff Respect Lady G! Now we are working on a mini album for Lady G and you can look for that in 2015! Another veteran Canadian artist is Juliet Nelson aka Smurfette! She is our secret weapon! LOL She is doing so many harmonies for this album as well as her own song. We are blessed to have her on our team. She is one of Montreal’s and Canada’s best female singers! Another bright star is Empress Minott! The neice of the late Sugar Minott, I met up with her at a show in Montreal and then again at the
ReggaeXclusive Award Show this past June. Both Bobby and I were so impressed with her that we needed to have her on board. Last of all, Patra! Just like a queen, Patra came through for us with an amazing song. This album is really pure ROYALTY! To wrap this up, I have to give thanks to what I call the Indie Rootz Team! In PR we have: Yanique Spence (Jamaica), Deborah Harewood and Reeva ann Proctor. As well as Bobby’s wife Shakky Allyene, she is also an Indie Rootz artist, but she is just blessing us with harmonies on various songs this time around. Even Bobby will be doing some harmonies too! Putting a project like this together wasn’t easy. Only certain artists and other producers can really relate to this and agree! It’s truly a labour of love! Bobby and I worked endless hours in and out of the studio. The end result will speak for itself. Remember The Royalty Rub Riddim Compilation will be out mid October 2014. For now, Indie Rootz Records is going to focus on producing singles, EP’s and albums. We are also doing joint projects with both The Heart of Empress label and YuhSeeYou Productions. Maybe one day we will feel the “compilation” vibes again.

REGGAEXCLUSIVE “LIVE SHOW” REVIEW
WE’RE IN CANADA! THE COLD CAN’T STOP US!
Montreal International Reggae Festival Review / Special Edition of Miss Reeva’s Corner
round as he performed his hits and new singles off his recently released album. Marcia Griffiths
A
s a cold front hit Montreal this past weekend, Reggae fans, enthusiasts and regular festival patrons came out to enjoy a 3-day weekend filled with Reggae, Dancehall and urban talent from all parts of the world. Montreal’s International Reggae Festival is known to be the biggest Reggae festival in Canada. This summer they celebrated their 11th year with a blend of acts from Canada, Jamaica, U.S.A and Barbados. Friday night, the sprinkles of rain definitely made an impact on the crowd that showed up to see Maxi Priest and Etana but that didn’t stop the two from giving fans a great kick-off to their weekend at the festival. Before the international acts, the M.I.R.F stage was blessed with the presence of Juno Nominated, Ammoye, from Toronto, Canada and Montreal’s very own Kaisha Lee, the two being well established singers here in Canada. Jamaica’s International singer Etana, sang her heart out as patrons swayed back and forth to the melodies of her songs. As Maxi Priest came to the stage, an even bigger crowd gathered
Saturday, the official Dancehall night at the festival, the rain hovered over Montreal. Though the crowd came in late, M.I.R.F produced a very successful turnout. Jamaica’s breakthrough artist Kalado kicked off the International acts singing his popular songs such as “You Make Me Feel” and “Good, Good Bring Life” following uprising international artist QQ who is popularly known for his single “One Drop”. QQ did a great job at hyping the crowd utilizing Montreal dancers to engage the festival goers even more. The show continued bringing on the long time and established artist out of the Alliance camp, Kiprich. Kiprich is known for his lyrics, being the champion of 2012’s Sting and his gimmick singles such
as “Telephone Ting” and recently, “Smartphone”. The artist entertained the crowd bringing up a fan from the crowd to showcase a little “Whine and Dagga”. International Artist, Demarco, involved the crowd with the multitude of hit songs, finishing off with his most well-known track: “I Love My Life”. Between acts, Montreal’s own Energy Squad hyped the crowd with some classic soca music. This was the second year the fest involved a Soca act on the Saturday night. Last year with the good response to Kes the Band, they decided to bring Barbados soca queen; Alison Hinds. The Barbadian artist stole the show with the first 3 minutes of her set, her DJ and dancers livelying up the crowd between her songs. Saturday night ended with one of the most anticipated acts; Sean Paul. Allison Hinds was a hard act to follow, the artist did well, but the Reggae Festival fans stayed for about half his set before the wind started to pick up and the rain got worse. Sunday, the shining weather encouraged M.I.R.F Patrons to come out earlier. Toronto’s Rootsman Sound played sweet reggae music as the band prepped for Marcia Griffiths. With an hour set, Marcia brought back memories for some and gave the younger generation a taste of real reggae music. On behalf of the
Montreal International Reggae Festival, Black Coalition of Quebec and Jamaica’s High Commission she received an award for being in the business for 50 years. I-Octane came on the stage ready to greet his Montreal Fans, being here twice before; his fan base has grown each time. Montreal welcomed him with open arms and his set was long enough to please the crowd for 45 minutes. You can easily say that I-Octane was the highlight of Sunday night as the artist ran into the crowd, touching the hands of his fans and bringing the festival up close and personal. I-Octane also showed Canada love, making sure to acknowledge Little Thunder Sound several times, DJ Wiz from CHRY and he invited 3 time Juno award winner, Exco Levi to the stage to share a song. The night continued, as Little Thunder Sound closed off IOctane’s set and welcomed Sanchez to the stage. One thing about Sanchez, when you bring this artist to the festival patrons of all ages sings his songs and it’s a beautiful thing to see. To end the night, Luciano, who has been expected at the last 2 festivals, closed the show. The artist was apologetic and didn’t disappoint as he put on a great show with back flips, front flips and some real skanking.

and I felt at home even though Iwas so far from it. After taking in the scenes of the city, we started to sell ‘Over You’ on the streets. The most common response we got was, “You came all the way to London from Canada to promote yourself?” To that we said: “Why wouldn’t we? London loves music of all kinds and that’s exactly what I sing!” I took a picture with everyone that got a CD (that would allow it), and I created an album to share it on my Facebook fan page entitled #UKLOVE. Again, the networking began, and people referred us to various radio stations and even passed on contact information! We received emails with reviews of ‘Over You’ and people were asking where they could hear me live. I performed at quite a few places in London. By the end of the month, I was the featured artist of a reggae event! We got
REGGAEX: What plans do you have for the future musically? CS: I am currently in the studio recording more music here in Canada. I’d like to travel to some other countries to promote ‘Over You’, which includes my Mom’s place of birth, Jamaica! I plan to collaborate with other artists, and write and produce material for my first album. REGGAEX: Candid opinion on the reggae music industry in Canada? CS: I’m a Canadian, I love my place of birth, but there is a big world out there and I look forward to using my gift to motivate and move people with my songs. I hope to travel the world and share the beauty we call music. Canada has a lot of talented artists and musicians who are striving to keep good reggae music alive. I’d like to take this time to thank all the promoters and radio personalities who continuously have kept reggae music on the airwaves, especially those who volunteer their time at community radio stations like CHRY 105.5FM, CIUT 89.5 FM and CKUT 90.3 FM in Montreal. I’d also like to thank Fitzroy Gordon and all his staff
at G98.7 FM for what they are doing for reggae music in Toronto. I recently performed at a G98.7 concert series called Island Fever at The Hard Rock Cafe and the lineup to see the show went around both sides of the street, proving that the people love and want to support the music. I recently performed at The Montreal International Reggae Festival 2014 which thankfully provides a platform for new artists like me to open up for international reggae music superstars like Pinchers, Marcia Griffiths, I-Octane, Sanchez, and Luciano! Candidly speaking Donna, changes are necessary in the business. When people decide they want change, change will come.
REGGAEX: While in the process of promoting yourself, tell us a little bit about that journey. CS: The beautiful part about this journey is the people that I meet every day on the road, with SUCH lovely things to say about how much they enjoy my voice or my music. Like how my voice is so soothing it puts their babies to sleep. Or that they play my jazz CD every morning at work, or how ‘Over You’ is describing their relationship and they played it to help get through their situation. As much positivity as I receive, there will always be negativity. When I’m on the road, people say they’re not interested, put their hand up and walk away, or don’t acknowledge my presence at
all. This rejection allowed me to become a stronger person. And for every no, I’ll get a yes from so many more people. The power is in the positive and that is where my focus lies. REGGAEX: Any words of advice for young artists like yourself? CS: First of all, I’d say to make sure you perform any opportunity you get. That way, you can find out if you enjoy doing so (and if people enjoy hearing you). Then, get business cards to show people you mean business. It’s also a way to promote you, whether on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram. If you’re not on all those social networks, get on there because it’s a way to promote to people you’d never meet around the world! Also, if you have the ability, make sure to be involved in the production of your music, the lyrics and music, because if you’re not happy with it, you can’t expect anyone else to be. I would like to take this opportunity to thank ReggaeXclusive for promoting reggae music in Canada in print and online. I would also like to thank the people who stopped, listened and supported my dream with a financial contribution for my CD. The owners that allowed me or my Mom to sit inside or outside of their establishments and sell my CD, I want them to know how thankful we are. Everyone who support in one way or the other, thank you. REGGAEX: Thank you for chatting with us Chelsea.

REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S SINGJAY / DEEJAY SPOTLIGHT positive vibe emanating from him wherever he goes. Versatility and crowd command is definitely one of Ras Campbell’s distinctive features, as the crowd goes wild at the mention of his name.
In 2001 Tixxybang migrated to the United Kingdom in search of better opportunities. His life, name and music evolved. He became a Rastafarian, his name changed to Tixxybang and his music began to have a greater purpose.

ixxybang was given the name Marlon Anthony Rhule by his parents and the nickname Silver Ticks. The name Silver Ticks soon changed to Tixxy Banton because of his melodic deejay style and he was often compared to prominent Reggae icon Buju Banton. Tixxy did his first recording at Bully’s studio in Spanish Town.
During his time in England he did Music Production courses at Redtape Studio in Sheffield, wrote and recorded many songs. He has also performed on shows with Movado, Gyptian, I Octane and Khago to name a few. Performing at Sting 2012 was a major boost for his career, since then he has performed at Follow di Arrow 2013, Peter Tosh Tribute Concert and many more. With hard work and determination over the years, he was able to set up his own independent Record Label and Recording Studio called L.Vision & Sounds Production in his community Lluidas Vale to try and help other youths like him.

Jah Vinci was born in August Town, Kingston, Jamaica. His life was touched by tragedy when he lost a brother to a violent crime in 2005. He has used this tragedy as motivation to create a better life for himself and his family through his music. For many
He has also collaborated with several artists and top producers. Despite launching a successful career Jah Vinci wasn’t satisfied with the direction his career was going. He wanted to make music that not only made his fans feel good but positively inspired, uplifted and motivated them. He therefore separated himself from the Gaza Empire (headed by Vybz Kartel) and went on to start his own brand: Out Clear Movements. Currently, he has a brand new and vibrant management team.
A few months ago, Ras Campbell promoted one of his many shows in his hometown and had an excellent turnout as the people came from all over to support their favorite artiste. His onstage act at that Event had the people shouting “encore, encore”, and he willingly obliged by returning to the stage and giving them some more of the ‘World Best’. Ras Campbell has released singles like Jah Jah Never Fail, Love Inna Di House, Call Mi and I Wish, all under his own label Nyla Records. Currently working with Heart of Empress Promotion & Production, his new single Religion & Politics will soon be released.
