REGGAEXCLUSIVE VIEWS when they rant a line like, “Has it been established that the murder of a black human by a white police officer, is actually race related?”

JULION VIEWS

TALKING BLUES

I

hope each article doesn’t sound like the last one, yet as tenacious as ‘the system’ is, I do feel it is my duty to humanity to be as consistently vigilant! So it does seem like I repeat the same messages in different ways yet it is I contribution to this ya iwah! The constant murders of black humans across this planet continue with all of our complicity to these murders. All races are complicit! I feel like I am giving licenses to Toronto police, or Missouri police or any government officials here in Canada as well as in Jamaica that it is ok to continue killing black humans.

I was watching clips of American news and listening to white reporters speak with indignant anger

I no longer get affected by those things as it pertains to shock value! My mindset is what it is based on the centuries of experiences that Native humans, African, Muslim, Asian, Indian / Pakistani humans have faced over the past five centuries from the so called white race. I had the pleasure of listening to approximately one hour and a half of Bunny Wailer speaking of “Revolution to Bongo Grass Cart” speaking not so popular words of Jamaican ‘politricks’ and the numbers of ministers in both parties aiding and abetting in the murders of Jamaican children at the behest of their white masters. Bunny’s major point is, “WAKE UP!” Why are we acceptant of this behavior? Through the tool of corruption, black humans have become the executioners of the black humans. And we embrace it as black humans throwing up our hands in the air and say silly things like, “they

are just criminals anyway.” or the latest label for niggers is, “they are a bunch of thugs anyway”! Constant self degradation as we have been taught to do. Well, no protesting for me, hand holding, marches or long ass boring speeches and songs like Kumbaya for me. Dem de a complete waste of time in I opinion. We have the same pattern to our behavior ‘fighting’ a system where the deck is completely stacked against us. We are like boxers who get knocked out in every single fight because of poor strategy as well as exceptionally poor defense. We go into the next bout , another 12, 17, 46, 55 year old dark skinned human, getting murdered and off we go again with the marching and the ‘speechifying’! To tell you the truth I personally don’t have a blueprint or series of plans or initiatives that I can currently impart to anyone! I just know that THIS current system isn’t working. This writing here is proof that I am no better, worse or different because this piece is blatant proof that I am a ‘speechifier’ too.

The point continues to be the same! Humans! The divisions that we are so well versed at putting up, democrat, republican, liberal, NDP, progressive conservative, PNP, JLP, black, white, Muslim, Jew, Christian, police, drones, wars, governments, corporations, Ebola, Chickungunya, gay bashing, Rwanda, steroid scandals, elections, Adrien Peterson, patriot act, hate, racism, are all distractions from the architect. Affect the architect and these things will also be affected. As a youth I heard a set of lyrics in a Bob Marley and the Wailers song called “Talking Blues” when he said / sang, “I feel like bombing a church, now that I know that the preacher is lying” I thought that Bob was being a tad harsh with such a bold statement. Then I grew up! I realize how accurate that entire song is in explaining I words, thoughts and feelings. Mi nah look nuh war wid nobody and our current speechifying not working. So wah nex’? Humans...

PROMOTER MICHAEL CHARLES IS DEAD Prominent Toronto promoter Michael Charles passed

away peacefully in his home on Friday November 21, 2014 after a two year battle with GIST, a rare form of stomach cancer. Michael was the consummate professional, known for producing large scale Urban stage plays and promoting club events. He was meticulous, extremely hardworking and well loved by the Black community. Over the two year period of his illness, the costs of receiving treatment skyrocketed into the tens of thousands, prompting friends and supporters to organize a fundraiser in January 2013. Unfortunately those costs resumed after his relapse in Spring of 2014. ReggaeXclusive condolences go out to the family of Michael Charles. RIP

INDIE ROOTZ RECORDS IS TAKING IT TO ANOTHER LEVEL After spending over a year on our latest masterpiece, The Royalty Dub Compilation, you think that we would sit back and relax! Actually that was exactly our plan! So much for good planning! Just a few weeks later, Bobby and Brian of Indie Rootz Records were busy at it again, but this time on another level. While the

Royalty Dub Compilation is gaining popularity and airplay across the globe, we are not resting at all. Indie Rootz Records has teamed up with a big European (Netherlands) based sound called Foundation Sound for a special project. Foundation Sound is a sound that specializes in Old School Dancehall and Reggae. They are very popular in Europe and parts of Africa not to mention, a big fan of Lady G. As readers know, Indie Rootz Records is also a big fan of Lady G! Therefore we are pleased to come out with the official Royalty Dub Compilation Mixtape. You will be able to find links to this on our Facebook page, the Indie Rootz website and Youtube. Another first for us was to get some professional videos made. So while recently in Jamaica, we got 3 videos recorded. By very early in 2015 Reggae music fans worldwide will get the chance to see and hear “Rave” by Stacia Fya, “Natty Congo” by Donna Makeda and “Rock & Come In” by Lady G ft. Shae Mill. All 3 videos were recorded in various parts of Kingston, Spanish Town and Helshire Beach. This is the first time that we have had professional videos made and having them shot on location is Jamaica was the icing on the cake! These will be up on our website and facebook page as well as the artists’ Facebook pages and other social media. Musically, it was nice to get

back into the studio and build some new riddims. As always we use live instruments with our unique team work of Bobby and Brian, keeping things original, different and of the highest quality. We have also teamed up with Yuhseeyou Productions and about halfway done on The Havana Affair Compilation to be released in late spring 2015. Finally, we are looking about doing a next video with Donna Makeda in support of her hit song on the Royalty Dub Compilation, “No Sell Out”. The positive vibes and music never stops! REGGAEXCLUSIVE HEALTH WATCH we don’t want to go outside. Everything in our lives tends to slow down, like Bears in hibernation. This is called Seasonal Affective Disorder.

WINTER BLUES S.A.D Cause and Solutions By: Trisha Smith (R.N.C; C.H; R.P; L.C) 647-702-6620

W

e all know when Winter rolls around, it can be a very difficult time. There may be a sensation that comes over us that makes us feel withdrawn, depressed, socially isolated, fatigued, oversleeping and decreased sexual desire. We may even gain a bit more weight during the winter months. The big stage shows, birthday parties and even important errands may pass us by all because

So why does this happen? Why is it that when winter surfaces our whole vibe changes for the worse? You see, because the winter months have shorter hours of daylight and more overcast skies during the daytime, it results in less light entering the eyes. The lack of light sends signals to the pineal, pituitary and hypothalamus glands which lessen its functionality. These endocrine glands collectively are all located in the brain and are in charge of specific hormone secretions. Any shift in hormone production has a direct effect on our mood and emotional state. The dark and dreary overcast days can be emotionally straining and we can also experience nutritional deficiencies due to the lack of fresh produce or our desire to lessen its consumption. In our waking hours, we need

sunlight ever so often, this is why many people move to the West and reside for less than a year as the affects are too great on their life. It is also statistically known that women have this problem 4 times as often as men. So what can we do to repel these negative effects on our bodies and emotional state? 1) An improvement in diet will greatly help. Foods rich in B complex are needed along with all fresh fruits and vegetables. Foods high in B complex include things like nutritional yeast (great on popcorn), whole grains like spelt, amarenth, teff, oats and kamut. Black strap molasses, Fish, poultry, organ meats (liver), nuts/seeds and legumes. 2) Another option if possible, is to obtain a full spectrum light for your dining room, living room and work area. 3) Spend more time outdoors on sunny or bright days. 4) St. Johns Wort is a helpful anti-depressant, I have taken this and it works like a charm. Take 300 mg, three times a day or as directed. 5) Each

morning and evening, take a hot and cold shower and do gentle muscle stretches. Go outside every day, take a couple deep breaths and walk vigorously for a while. 6) You can visit your nearest health food store and purchase a supplement specifically for S.A.D or one that contains either Vitamin D (take as directed), Quercetin (100mg), Bromelain (500mg), Calcium (1000 mg), Magnesium (500mg), Zinc (30mg) and B complex which I always take at 100mg a day. All of these nutrients are vital in keeping your energy and vibes up during the winter months. 7) Lastly, be POSITIVE. Try not to complain and worry about things as it depletes your B vitamin stores. Surround yourself with happy people, if you are alone, think about times in your life that brought you joy. Laugh as much as you can and always be in a state of GRATITUDE as we all have so much to give thanks for. In love and light, have a blessed Winter.

Abokwan’s music is a mix of original roots reggae and some enchanting loud dub parts. Playing with rhythmic trance and harmony, Abokwam’s music feeds the spirit and soul and invites you to make a trip from the Caribbean to Africa, their roots. Cedrick is the leader of the band, he writes the majority of the music and lyrics. He’s inspired by the urban way of life and by some great artists like Peter Tosh, Black Uhuru, Bob Marley and the old school Jamaican reggae musicians; and finally by his African roots (Ivory Coast). So he proposes Roots ’n’ dub, shaking ancient tradition and the modern life, a kind of paradox where anybody can live anywhere.

ENGINEER / PRODUCER SPOTLIGHT played a very impotent part in his life. Anthony learned harmony singing at age 12 from his uncle Thinka Francis, that really helped to build his musical confidence.

orn in Standpipe, Kingston 6, Jamaica, Anthony went to live with his grandmother at age four in Gordon Town, St Andrew/ He attended Gordon Town All Age School until age 14 when he moved to Toronto Canada on December 19, 1970. In Toronto, he attended the Rockcliffe Primary School, George Harvey Secondary School, George Brown College and Trebas Institute. As with most Jamaican youth, music

On arriving in Canada, Anthony experienced great difficulty dealing with all the changes, music was his only refuge. Then his voiced changed. He always wanted to play instruments and he had access to the guitar but no teacher. After struggling with it with little progress, his brotherin-law who knew how to tune and play, gave him what he needed to progress. Anthony jammed with a drummer so he played bass, an instrument he never paid much attention to. ReggaeX: Who is LionTunda and when did you start in the music business? LionTunda: Well, LionTunda is simply one of Jah sparks who manifested in the Caribbean. As for the music, from the first time I heard Reggae play in the early 80’s it made me glow and only this year I compiled an EP to let the light beams show. ReggaeX: Who are some of your influences and why Reggae? LionTunda: God is the true Hero, and basically speaking, all great men from pillars in Scriptures to street soldiers who uphold righteousness with strength. Any Artist who can stand behind a mic and wail out their heart has my honor. As it has been said Reggae is that Music that will traverse the globe. I am blessed to be born amongst its cradle, so my Artistic speech will have to echo its cry. ReggaeX: Tell us about the making of your EP, do you write your own songs and who produced the EP? LionTunda: Everything I chanted is self compiled. The words of wisdom

With an incredible decisiveness and ambition, he has grown to become one of the most prominent dancehall dancers in the world. Passion is what characterizes his dancing. With his personal style and expressive moves he can’t

Everything is exclusive, and was recorded in my neighbor’s studio. ReggaeX: What are some of your future plans in regards to your music career? LionTunda: The EP is out on the digital market, iTunes etc...I have hard-copies available for any participating merchants who want to give the Lion a ‘bligh’. I am currently taking aim at the stage having done a few open mic performances. Also,

there is another EP in the works that has some elements of Hip Hop and features a few collaborations with local rising stars. Great Kings are crowned by their followers, in this case their fan support. ReggaeX: What are your thoughts on the reggae music industry in Canada? LionTunda: The ones who have been successful will have to be considered truly blessed! Plain and simple, it is extremely difficult to be a star given the lack of a solid support structure for Canadian Reggae Artists. Obtaining a Government Grant is near impossible. Funds to propagate and inspire those who are trying to continue their path unto success or to strive seem bleak, or inaccessible. That being said, we are not going to stop, not the Lionhearted! ReggaeX: Any big ups or shout-outs? LionTunda: First and foremost to Jah the Almighty! Large up to all artists famous and infamous, Spoila Ranks for the support, Exco Levi and Marky Lyrical for the acknowledgement, Andrew Barclay at BMMP for the Open Mic sessions for local artists, and respect to ReggaeXclusive for pushing the Reggae Culture in full force!

he legendary reggae band “Messenjah” performed at Tattoo Rock Parlor November 14th 2014. During the past six months they have been busy performing at The Beaches International Jazz Festival, The Ottawa FolkFest, The Barrie Rhythmfest, The Irie Music Festival, The Whistler BC Concert Series as well as

featuring Turbulence, Chuck Fenda, Donna Makeda, General Threes, Mighty Diamonds, Shadrock, Mikey Melody, Ras Campbell, Norval Edgehill, Goshen, Grung Fyah and others was a successful venture. This event was sponsored by Heart of Empress Promotion and Production and the music was provided by Killamanjaro with Selecta Ricky Troopa. The Live in the Killaloe. They are making a great come back. The well known dub poet Clifton Joseph was the MC. He was boisterous, entertaining and warmed up the anticipating audience. The show was streamed live by “Up Up Up Entertainment Inc. to Roots Reggae Radio. Lovely and talented Laura Aisha opened the show. The audience responded very positively to songs “We Stand Strong” and “Get up Right Now”. Her voice was really strong, lyrics were meaningful and inspiring. Next in the lineup was Odel Johnson & The Govament. I haven’t seen him perform before and I was pleasantly surprised. I loved his Bongo drumming solo and so did the audience who participated in singing along with him when he sang the

show started off with Chuck Fenda who warmed up the crowd in true ‘poor people defenda’ style. Norval Edgehill appeared onstage sharply dressed and gave a good performance. Mikey Melody received a great response from the crowd, they loved him. Then Goshen followed, a young singer who did not fail to deliver. He was followed by Donna Makeda who gave a very professional and energetic performance. Donna appeared ‘live’ with popular tune “Legalize It” written by Peter Tosh. We were all pumped up to hear Messenjah and they did not disappoint the crowd. They played some of my favorite tunes “Keep on Pushing”, “Cool Operator”, “Never Lonely” and “Walk with you”. Rupert Harvey, the lead singer and his brother Carl Harvey on rhythm guitar had a wonderful jazz-like guitar conversation. They danced up a storm and the audience cheered them on. At one point Carl played the guitar with his teeth, I recall Jimmy Hendrix used to do that, but I never seen that done before. Quite amazing I must say. Charles Sinclair was great on the bass guitar and Haile Yeates and Orville Malcolm were on percussion and keyboard. The drummer extraordinaire was none other than Robert

dancers Craig Black Eagles, Prince Black Eagles and Stacia Fya. Then Ras Campbell ‘World Best’ took the stage and the ladies went wild. Next onstage was Turbulence who was a crowd favorite and received many ‘forwards’. Also on the bill were the Mighty Diamonds, Grung Fya and many more. The promoters would like to thank all sponsors and all workers who helped to make this show a success. Stephenson. I was surprised how many young people attended the show. It is a testament that their music, a fusion of reggae and rock is still relevant and inspiring. It lifts your spirit and fills your soul no matter what age you are. We all had a really great time, but were not ready to go home yet. We cheered and continued to applaud demanding an encore. They played their new single “We’ve Had It” now available on ITunes. They finished the show by coming off the stage, down on to the dance floor, still playing to their loyal fans who really loved that. Thank you Messenjah! It was a great show, fantastic energy and amazing vibe! Until next time! (Bianca “Nyavingi” Brynda - Producer/Director of “Roots Daughters” The women of Rastafari Founder/Director of Yoga Bliss)

REGGAEXCLUSIVE CHAT YONNETTE HOOPER RELEASES CHRISTMAS ALBUM

resides here in the USA and goes by the name of Mark ‘Midas’ Walcott.

ReggaeX: Being as you reside in the USA, what are your thoughts on the reggae music industry in that country? YH: Reggae music is fast becoming a growing trend here in the USA. I would like to see this trend get a lot more props because of its influence in the International market. Like R&B, I honestly believe there is a market for Reggae, not ruling out Soca; but there is a false perception in some unusual way, whereby good reggae artists are stifled once they get to these shores. They are forced to commercialize what we know as good reggae music, to ‘washed up’ reggae music, like that of UB40 for example. Many may not share my opinion.

ReggaeX: Greetings Yonnette, it’s a pleasure to chat with you once again, this time, it’s a Christmas album. Tell us the name of it and what or who influenced you to do this album? YH: My Kinda Christmas is the album name and title track. This album was influenced by my fans that saw the recent performance I did for one of the visiting churches. ReggaeX: Tell us about the making of the album, who wrote and produced it, and who are the musicians you worked with? YH: The title track My Kinda Christmas, was written by my late father Eddie Hooper and was never recorded. As a child growing up, we would join my father ‘caroling’ around our housing scheme in Melanie Damishana, East Coast Demerara, Guyana during the Christmas time spreading the joys, as other kids and their parents would join in along the route. Before we realized what was happening, there would be a long procession with bottle, spoon and fork in hand having a great time. This album, which also has a number of cover tracks, was engineered and produced by me and one of the best young musicians of our time to be born in our great country Guyana. He now

ReggaeX: What plans do you have for promoting the album? YH: We are presently working on the video. The album hits the streets this week for sale, and will be online for downloading during the Christmas season. Although I am aware that this is a short season, I am positive that this album will be around for many years to come. ReggaeX: What are some of your future plans in regards to your music career? ReggaeX: Any big-ups or shoutouts? YH: I would like to give a great shout-out to ReggaeXclusive Magazine for obliging me this opportunity. Respect to Mark (Midas) Walcott for his continued good work, my family for putting up with me and believing in me; all of my fans, for without them I don’t know where I would be today in my musical career, their interest in keeping up with me gives me the day to day drive to continue; and last but not least, the Almighty for every day of my life.

According to SunCity chairman, Steve Billings, an internal committee has been established to oversee songs for the top 10 tracks that will make the WPT cut. “From the songs that we receive each week, our committee will screen all of them for clarity, lyrical content, composition and creativity,” Billings explained. “The top 10 will be chosen and those songs will be placed into rotation.” He said the songs will be posted on the SunCity website (www.suncityradio.fm) and on their respective social media pages, where listeners can vote for their favourites. The songs with the most votes automatically earn regular rotation.

reetings one and all, this is Ras Bingi the 2013 and 2014 recipient of the ReggaeXclusive Magazine Reggae Radio Personality Recognition Award. Since I received these awards I have been at Loyalist College in Belleville Ontario studying Radio Broadcasting in April of 2014. I was granted a one hour show “The Higher Level Reggae Show” every Saturday night on the Fm Station that

This being said it seems to be the hardest thing to get Canadian artists to send out their music to radio DJ’s. I really find it hard to believe that I can get the 2014 Grammy winner Ziggy Marley to send his 2014 award winning album Fly Rasta 3 weeks before it was out in the stores with jingles. But at the same time I can’t get reggae artists in my own country to send me their music. I remember when artists recorded music to be heard and I also remember how hard it was to get your music played

Additionally, artistes with songs getting the most votes are to be interviewed on the station. This process will be repeated weekly to allow other songs to be given sufficient airtime.

According to Billings, WPT is not just about breaking new acts. “We as a station want to play our role in nationbuilding and exposing the talent that our country has. We feel that this is a meaningful way to make that contribution, and as such, the task will now be on the artistes to produce good songs.” Up and coming entertainers and entertainers looking to reach the Jamaican market are asked to email their songs to: with a biography, and a promotional photo. Each artiste should have an active social media page on facebook and twitter as well as a profile on Reverbnation.com.

on the radio. Now I am in the position to pick and play any songs I want to put on the radio and I am very proud of Canadian Reggae music. I want more of it to play for my listeners. I can’t spend my time searching YouTube or Sound Cloud to get new Canadian reggae because of time I must spend doing school work. I am also getting ready to start another show on another FM radio station in my home town of Picton, Ontario; this show will have the same kind of format so I NEED YOUR MUSIC. Let’s continue to make Canadian reggae music rock our country and not just in the big cities. Send your music, I guarantee it will be played on one of my shows (as long as the lyrics are clean radio edits).
