REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S VIEWS / NEWS

JULION VIEWS www.canadianreggaeworld.com

7TH NOVEMBER, 1959 - 9TH JUNE, 2014

A

n icon of the Canadian reggae scene has passed! Paul Anthony White, affectionately and famously known as Raffa Dean is no longer with us in the flesh yet his powerful, beautiful spirit continues to elevate this genre even with his seemingly sudden passing. It is normal human emotion to grieve for the loss a friend / family member yet when great souls pass, I feel also a sense of joy as their energy gets spread amongst us who knew them and they live on through me / us as well as through the music. Raffa pretty much affected everyone! He had a smile for everyone, and a story...lol... best story teller in the world! Yet he lived a ton of life! He jammed with almost every musician or band that ever came through Toronto and other parts of Canada. Widely considered as the most talented and creative drummer to have played reggae music in Canada, Raffa was called to save the night for many a band. As a onetime band manager I personally had to go hunt Raffa down once when we had a big show and he came through. He was

also a member of a few units himself, like Freedubstar whom he performed with just recently at the Cadillac Lounge, as well as the Resinators, Big Sugar and the Dream Band. He seemed to just love to play and when he did, he brought joy not only to his band mates but also to the audience at large. He seemed to make eye contact with anyone at any time during his performances and share a joke with you and cackle away while playing and not miss a beat! It was always fun to watch him perform! The thing is, this is one of the most talented reggae drummers / musicians who were not only blessed with the skill but more with that authentic reggae vibe, being born from and of Jamaica. Some folks have mentioned to me in the past few days that they feel saddened that they weren’t given an opportunity to share knowledge with him. This situation that we all find ourselves in, losing one of the originators / originals is the reason that I continue to bring live reggae music to Toronto and Canadian audiences.

me! The outpouring of love and emotion that I have received from many, many, many of you since the news broke, is a testament to who Raffa was and what he meant not only to live reggae music but to each and every individual that he touched. I must say how honored I feel to have witnessed him work hundreds of times and all I can see is his mischievous grin all night long. He seemed to make the music better and more importantly; I do feel blessed to have called him my friend. Jah guide Raffa Dean, until we meet again. (From Julion on behalf of all who fulljoyed your earthly essence)

Blessings to you Raffa Dean for inspiring

THE MONTREAL I N T E R N AT I O N A L REGGAE FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES SECOND WAVE OF FEATURED ARTISTS Following the announcement of its first wave of programming unveiled last month, confirming the participation of Maxi Priest, Sanchez, Marcia Griffiths and Percy Sledge, the Montreal International Reggae Festival is proud to confirm the participation of three other major stars of Jamaican music Sean Paul, I-Octane and Demarco. Collin “Demarco” Edwards embodies a new era of avantgarde artists combining songwriting, music production, recording and live performance. Over the past five years Demarco has delivered a solid string of memorable hits, such as Duppy Know Ah Who Fe Frighten, Fallen Soldiers, True Friend and Show It (So Sexy). For the past two years in Jamaica, you can see and hear I-Octane everywhere! The handsome young singer with the sweet, warm voice

has been recruited as a spokesperson for Digicel, les breuvages Busta and Guiness beer. Discovered by brilliant producer Donovan Germain (Penthouse Records), IOctane has been touring constantly on the international concert scene since the release of his debut album Crying To The Nation, a record fusing roots reggae and dancehall at its purest, including the two huge hits L.O.V.E. Y.O.U. and Missing You. This will be I-Octane’s very first appearance at the Montreal International Reggae festival, and is not to be missed ! The festival is also very proud to have the great Sean Paul headline its Saturday evening. With the release of his sixth album Full Frequency this year, featuring the radio crossover hits Other Side of Love, Entertainment, Turn It Up and Want Dem All, the dancehall superstar is back, more in-demand than ever. Since that major release, he has worked on projects with Major Lazer (Apocalypse Soon), Pharell Williams and nigérien Nigerian singer Timaya. For a second consecutive year, the Montreal International Reggae Festival’s innovative series of workshops and conferences will return to O Patro Vys on August 12, 13 and 14. The programming and complete schedule of these events, as well as new confirmations of additional performers and headliners will be announced at a press conference at O Patro Vys (356 Mont- Royal Street E) on Monday, July 14, at 11 A.M. in the company of a very distinguished international guest. REGGAEXCLUSIVE’S VIEWS that it isn’t easy. Now some of you are going to relate to my story and hopefully many more will learn a thing or two. When a promoter puts on an event, they are doing so because they love what they are doing and to make a loonie or a toonie. Between looking for artists, venues, dealing with promotion, date that clash etc etc etc; it’s hard work! Making a budget, sticking to a budget, expecting the unexpected and so forth, it isn’t easy. Even the time and gas money involved add up!

THE ROAD TO POVERTY IS FREENESS By: Brian Kotler

I

am NOT a promoter, never have been and never will. While I may put out my “own” event once or twice a year, I remain, not a promoter. I do know enough about it, to say

THE CONTAMINATION OF MAMA EARTH GMO SEEDS By: Trisha Smith

S

ixty one countries to date in Europe have permanently banned GMO food from crossing their borders, while over 20 countries have passed labelling laws. Currently, Canada has no ban and no labelling laws! For over a decade, Canadians have been exposed to immorally

We live in a world where EVERYTHING costs money, the Artists and their airfare, hotel and food; the venue, the flyers & promotion; the equipment and the sounds just to name a few. While there are times when things can be had for little, it’s very rarely ever engineered, artificial, pesticide infested food. North America has over 170 million acres of GMO Sugar beets, cotton, canola and soybean crops, more than anywhere else in the world! The act of creating a GMO is done by taking the genes of one species and forcing it into the DNA of another. An example of this would be creating plants with pesticide resistant genes already built into them and tomatoes that contain genes of a salmon to help keep it bright and firm for a longer time. All of this creates havoc in the body as we consume mutated food, foreign to our genetic makeup.

free, there are ALWAYS costs involved. Even with a successful event, once you add up all the costs, including time, gas, thinking, stress and so forth, it comes out to like a minimum wage job if you are lucky. When people tell me, “we really like what you are doing, and we want to support your show (event) can you give us 2 free tickets...?” I just have to bite my tongue. Now I will tell these people to refer to the June 2014 edition of the ReggaeXclusive Magazine! On the other side, I do know people who have ALWAYS supported what I do and always insisted on buying their tickets (wheather early bird or regular). So nuff respect to Karen and Uton! Real supporters like you make it all worth it. Extensive testing has been done on Rats and oversized tumours, gastro intestinal distress, liver damage, infertility and sever nutritional deficiency were all evident after just 4 months of being fed GMO corn!! So what can you do to avoid all of this madness? The first thing is to keep the liver and colon clean. This will prevent toxin build up and dis-ease in the body. Do this by incorporating a fibre rich diet and taking bowel cleanses periodically of which I can provide. Eating only certified organic food

Now please don’t think that I am a mean person, because anyone that knows me, knows that I have a big heart (maybe too big...LOL). I do give out free tickets to the hair salons, barber shops, restaurants and for radio etc. but there are limitations. Soon enough, promoters will stop putting on quality events, simply because they just can’t afford to, and for the record, before I became a part of the ReggaeXclusive Magazine team, I bought my own ticket and drove from Montreal to Toronto to attend. Why? Because of the love and respect that I have for events like this one. Donna Makeda, Prince Everald and their team work hard to make this beautiful award show a success. I wish that there was something like this Reggae Music Recognition Award show in Montreal! One Love! significantly lowers the chemical load and provides a richer nutrient based diet. Next is to wash your produce thoroughly with a brush and lemon, vinegar or salt water. The last and most important is to sign the labelling laws petition to force the government to label GMO food so we can choose what to eat. Go to: avaaz.org and sign the petition!! If we don’t stand up for our rights, GMO food will take over Canada and soon we will have no choice at all in what we choose to eat!

Haiti burned 475000 tons of seeds and pesticides donated by Monsanto after the Earthquake in 2010. This serious act shows you how detrimental GMO’s are and the sacrifice people are willing to make to stay far from it. GMO seeds contaminate the soil, leaving it “dead” where natural seeds cannot be sown.

Their motto is to empower and motivate youths in the community and also to provide information that will help them as they go forward. High school teacher and youth motivator Mark Poysor brilliantly executed such information at the 1st annual event last November. In the following year however, Verse showed his versatility, pledging his unwavering faith to Rastafari, in the song “Selassie I”. The combination of singing and chanting, which defines Verse’s sound today, was born in the crossover hit “BluePrint” released in early 2010. By the end of 2010, Verse iTal had performed extensively in his homeland of Trinidad. The following year, after releasing the smooth love song, “Spring Water”, iTal dropped his second album

Together they performed and recorded new material including a song named “Never Hurt” that would not be released until 2013. Verse returned to his homeland at the end of 2012, a different artist. The artist relocated to Europe at the end of 2013, and after doing numerous small shows, entered and won the Benelux Reggae Contest 2014 for the MC category. He describes this victory as ‘career changing’ as he is currently scheduled to appear in 7 festivals including the famous Reggae Geel . Now on the heels of the release of his latest hit single “Want No Part”, Verse iTal has emerged as one of the bright new stars of reggae music.
