The proposal aims to reach a building rehabilitation, taking into account the issues of sustainability and energy efficiency. The goal was to make the best connection between the heritage of a historic building and a contemporary point of view, addressing the needs of modern society. The vertical circulation between floors is located on the old windowless fa莽ade, that was open with a lath, creating a vertical movement, while providing an entrance of sunlight in each home. This option also allows the existence of a garden inside the building, creating a beneficial microclimate. The proposal also includes a rainwater utilization system, water heating system by solar energy and a temperature control system.

Facing the sea, protected by mountains and located in the economic center of the city, Delta Rijeka assumes his prominent position, not only in the context of the city of Rijeka, but also in relation to the Kvarner Bay and its reference position in the northern Adriatic. We intend that this once border town strengthen its attractiveness as a single territory, has a place of marriage between land and sea, between the historic city and the city’s future, strengthening the relationship with the people. The concept for this proposal is based on three key elements of this unique territory are at the root of our proposal: nature, dynamics and experiences. This territory has a unique location with a rich environment, through contact with water, sun exposure and the surrounding landscape, to be lived has an idyllic place. The urban proposal seeks to optimise the potential and reduce the the conditioning factors of this territory. The basic concept was developed from the local morphology and nature: the extension of the green canyon to the sea, protecting this new piece of the windy city dominant. The Delta is the main available area for the expansion of the historic centre after the deactivation of the port of the city. The proposal aims at strengthening the formal and functional relation of the intervention area with all the surrounding territory, especially with the historic centre which is adjacent to it, with the harbor area and the further urban expansion area. At east it will look for a regeneration of the industrial territory, a flagship project with a scale able to generate new dynamics in the city. The proposal is to extend the historical core and its characteristic urban life, for this new part of the city, focusing on the design, multifunctional areas that are the genesis of the basic functions of a city with life - housing, services, hotels, shopping and leisure areas, and some metropolitan and international scale facilities as exceptional elements, will which reinforce the vocation of the territory and define its identity.

The competition intends to find new concepts of the urban planning development of Kaliningrad City, through the regeneration of the historical centre in its new capacity as an important element of the urban environment. The specific goals of the competition are: a) Development of an urban planning concept, providing a well-grounded approach to the competition area “Korolevskaya Gora and its surroundings” (56 ha), which will later serve as a basis for the development of urban planning documents and land use regulations; b) Formation of an architectural and spatial proposal for the competition area “Korolevskaya Gora” (app. 10 ha), in which historic and cultural facilities will be articulated with the creation of a new urban area. The proposed urban concept is focused on three axes: a) A New image of the city, through historical buildings and urban fabric proportions – urban grid concept; b) Liveable spaces for people, culture and leisure – accessibility, public spaces and pedestrian flows; c) A New Centre for Kaliningrad, where History and Memory meet Art and Nature. The urban grid concept is the main structure which supports contemporary architecture and activities, but respecting and evoking the memory of the medieval urban fabric. Flows on the intervention area result from merging green axes, which connect natural areas around the intervention area, water landscapes from the river and the lake, historic spaces and public spaces that support urban liveability. It is proposed the urban regeneration of “Korolevskaya Gora” and harmonization of the surroundings through planning a new city centre with a strong architectural image and dynamic public spaces. The final goal is to give the area the image of “centre of active city life”, and to ensure the recognition of Kaliningrad as a city of Russia and the international Baltic region through finding its own individual architectural image. The city centre should set new standards of living space, its quality and style, to become a “hallmark” of modern Kaliningrad.
