PAULO VALE AFONSO ARCHITECTURE WORKBOOK
Paulo Vale Afonso (1982. Ponte de Lima, Portugal) is graduated in architecture from the Architecture Department of Coimbra’s University (Portugal) and NTNU (Trondheim, Norway). Through collaborative working networks, he has been developing studies and projects of architecture, both independently or in collaboration with other individuals, companies and/or organizations, as well as collaborating in other design offices in the development of architectural projects in all its design phases. Since 2009 he has been collaborating in several architecture offices in Portugal, Barcelona, Peru and Macau, amongst which OAB – Carlos Ferrater Partnership, Branco-Delrio, Impromptu Projects, and 51-1 Arquitectos, the Peruvian branch of Supersudaca. He has worked on several international projects of various scales and was a project leader in 51-1 Arquitectos, responsible for the design and delivery of major projects, such as collective housing projects Arawa, SO3555, and Palmeras, or the Ciudad del Rio masterplan, amongst others. He was a co-founder of AMA – Afonso Maccaglia Architecture (2012-2014) where he has developed mainly educational projects in the Peruvian jungle, awarded in the XIX Bienal Panamericana de Quito 2014 and finalists in the “Oscar Niemeyer” Award of Latin-American Architecture 2016 and in the X BIAU 2016. He is currently residing and working from Portugal. He is a co-founder/partner of RAS·A and a co-founder and collaborator of Morfema Magazine. Has been shortlisted as one of the 10 architects/studios selected worldwide to the Début Award for architects under the age of 35 of the 4th Lisbon Architecture Triennale in 2016, and his work has been presented in conferences and published worldwide.

The bilingual secondary school located in the native Nomatsiguenga community of Chuquibambilla, aims to provide adequate study conditions for the local youth, as well as provide a place for meeting and for community development. The school consists of three modules arranged around a central courtyard, the epicentre of the project. In addition to classrooms, the program includes an administrative area and teacher’s room, a multipurpose room, a computer room, and large open and covered spaces, suitable for educational and leisure activities. The program also incorporates a student residence, which walls off the patio. It has a unique appearance that is more playful and similar to housing. The construction combines vernacular and modern materials, and introduces new construction systems with local resources.

In the beginning of the process in 2013, the program required was a canteen for a nursery school, with 30 students. In 2014, the number of students reached 120. Given the new situation, we proposed the construction of a multipurpose space that could serve as classroom, canteen, auditorium, and conference room, with a separate kitchen. The structure was built with wood, with a system of movable and multi-coloured panels together with louvered panels. By moving the panels 90º, they become tables which allows for the creation of various types of work spaces. The module of the kitchen was built with handmade clay bricks. A sui generis characteristic of the space is inverted visibility effect. While generally the buildings consist in an inner space from which one looks at the exterior, in this case kids and adults, keen with curiosity, pop up and curiously peek at the interior, becoming participants of the inner life on building, as if it was a public square. By combining local materials with active participation and contribution of the community, we were able to build a functional space in harmony with the environment, within the initial budget and with the capacity to accommodate 120 children. Today, the multipurpose classroom in Mazaronkiari benefits not only the nursery school, but also the parents and the community, who now have a place to meet and socialize after school hours.

The school accommodates 200 students, and gives young people in this rural area the opportunity to continue secondary level studies. It is strategically located close to several population centres, making it accessible for the greatest possible number of students. The architectural proposal was tailored to the geographical, morphological, and climatic conditions of the area, and to the cultural and social conditions of the community. The use of simple and local materials in a new and contemporary design creates a sense of pride and development in this usual forgotten communities. The infrastructure consists of a compact volume with a large sports yard. The construction includes covered “open” spaces, a double-height central hall, and a corridor along the axis of the infrastructure connecting the classrooms to the administrative block. All spaces “between the classrooms,” such as laboratories and the library, were promoted as “open spaces,” for public use. In most cases, the school in a rural community serves not only as a place to study, but also as a place for recreation and one where anyone in the community can get together. Santa Elena is another example of a village where a school provides the only real “public” infrastructure. A building in which the boundaries between inside and outside blur in order to create real public space connected with its surroundings.

The program is developed in a unique compact volume in order to optimize circulations and spaces and the construction costs. The building, implemented on the southern side of the plot due to the soil resistance, is composed by two classrooms, bathrooms for teachers and students, a a small kitchen, and a covered, multipurpose patio conected by a wide open corridor. To the north is the playground, made of recicled materials. The construction of the school has been carried out thanks to the work of master builders and the local citizens, while he playground and stairway of tires was completed by generous volunteers and neighbours during a workshop.

A young family asked us to renovate a 110m2 apartment and 45m2 patio in a 1960’s building in the centre of Porto. The apartment was in overall poor conditions, namely the wooden windows and floors were damaged, the kitchen and toilets were obsolete, and the patio surfaces were the result of regrettable past works. Above all, the clients were seeking for one of the most visible aspects of the domestic contemporary life: to unify the social areas and the patio in order to accommodate as many everyday functions as possible. Therefore, our first gesture was to replace the kitchen/living room wall by a cabinet, controlling the permeability between the spaces and maximizing and unifying the distribution of natural light. The selection of materials and languages adopted in this project converged on one main goal: to harmonize the apartment in the building in which it is inserted. In that sense, we used insulated wooden windows, terrazzo and hand painted tiles for the toilets, wooden parquet for the floors, marble for the kitchen, cast iron and terrazzo for the patio, detailed and lacquered woodwork for doors and wardrobes, and hammered glass in the hall door. This materials palette, together with the design of some furniture, has provided a sense of detail which connects the apartment with its past identity. Nevertheless, the quality and the truth of the materials ensures its future.

The brief proposed transforming an old office space into a housing space for temporary residence, in response to the high increase of the touristic demand in the city of Porto, allowing a maximum of 6 occupants. With the client agreement, it was proposed to create a housing typology which might respond to the brief, but allowing a future use also as a permanent residence, thus adopting a less ephemeral solution and the creation of a housing space which doesn’t become obsolete with time or with the variations of the touristic market. With a low budget intervention, the project seeks to maximize the low solar exposure and the existing space, demolishing the unnecessary elements and opening the spaces to light, through an open-space typology that with movable elements (sliding doors and curtains) allows to open or close spaces and adopt different spatial configurations. Light and simple finishes maximize the perception of light and space and serve as background to distinct appropriations according to the nature of its occupation. A wooden volume contains the bathroom and kitchen, using the existing infra-structural connections to place these elements. Being the spaces intentionally defined in terms of geometry, materials and comfort, they assume in the most ambiguous possible way the program. A roomy space as cosy and familiar as possible, adapting easily to different types of occupation and lifestyle of its users.

The brief was to renovate a small house and extend the built area in order to accommodate the family needs and resolve some spatial discrepancies, both of the building and its exterior. It was proposed to extend the house to the east, maintaining its vernacular language, clarifying and re qualifying both its interior spatiality as the exterior spaces: to mend the space on the east, degraded and without significant use, such as the lower entry floor, poorly built, and significantly increase the façade and thus creating a frank relationship with the garden, one of the clients’ wishes. Thus, the house grows to the maximum limits allowed by law, maintaining the north alignment thus maximing this façade and its relation with the garden. This operation allows for the house to have direct sunlight from the south and cross ventilation. Open spaces with clear relations between them enhance the domestic living, allowing for generous and well lighted spaces.

Social Border is a project located in the periphery of Lima whose motivation is to help an urban community to improve its public space. Many settlements like this have several deficiencies in infrastructure and urban equipment. For this reason we have designed this park using the current platform as a sport facility and social workshop. Due to low resources, the design considers local materials and local labor. With the help of the people, we are managing resources for building this project in the near future.

The renovation of an old school building in order to accomodate an ocupational activities center for disabled people. The building area remains the same, with the exception of a small extension on the north part of the building which accomodates the sanitary facilities and the change rooms. All the area previously occupied by the porch is transformed in a multipurpose room for the users activities. All the spaces have become free of any physical barrier and the space has become more fluid. It was a concern that the building can maintain a direct relationship with the exterior, in order to enjoy them and use them and therefore garantee its maintenance. The renovation of the building also intends to resolve some constructive problems in the existing building and that were inadequate to its actual requirements.

Design Our Ryde competition is an open call for ideas to redevelop the city centre of Ryde has as a goal through Ryde an extensive program: to provide accommodation for local government council operations (Civiv Centre and Civic Council); to offer a range of multifunctional spaces, both open and enclosed, to support community needs; to house office and retail space to enhance employment and service local requirements; to provide apartment dwellings; To implement improved connectivity for pedestrian access from adjacent precincts and to the Top Ryde City shopping centre, its eastern neighbour; to seek improved links to bus services. As the main project goal is to offer a bif portion of public space, the built program is concentrated on the southeast part, where the urban scale is of bigger density, freeing the rest of the site (mainly housing and low density area) to a park/plaza. The geometry of the main building is segmented into towers in order to potentiate the urban scale relationship on the site and with its surroundings, while at the same time it creates different views and allows an improved air circulation and natural lighting conditions.

The competition of the Medical School required a complex programm, divided in three major areas: Adminstration, Educational and Research. The goal is the the construction of a building which could answer to the demands of a high quality medical teaching at an international level, flexible at an organizational level and that considered important sustainable demands in order to minimize its energy consumptions. Given the demand of the programmatical interconnections, which conditioned the spatial design, it was decided to create two big common spaces, a courtyard and an atrium, which were intended to be a place of programmatical decompression, and at the same time garanteeing another important conceptual point: the necessity of interrelation and sharing of experiences and knowledges that we assume as extremely important for an educational program, especially one also related with research. A widely open route through all the building allways mantains visual comunication with this two main spaces.

A young family asked us to optimize the interior layout of a 100m2 apartment in a 1996 building in Vila Nova de Famalicão. Their main concerns were the unification of the social areas, the lack of a second bathroom, and the general condition of the apartment materials. Our strategy was to demolish the wall between the kitchen and the living room, to redesign the distribution hall in order to introduce a second bathroom, to design a new kitchen and to repair the existent wood floor. In order to unify the new layout spaces there is a 2mt high surface made by doors, wardrobes and wood panels.

The renovation of a house from the 80’s has as main goal to reorganize the main spaces of the house to a more contemporary living and to create a new independent two bedroom apartment in the lower floor, while at the same time improve the thermal behaviour of the building. The architectural proposal consists in spatially reorganize the upper floor, where is the main access, moving the social areas (actually facing north) to a more favourable position, on the southwest, overlooking the surrounding landscape of the Lima Valley, creating a new crossed relation between the two main façades. A new interior distribution which, with the façade treatment and new windows, enhances the thermal confort through passive climate systems (suach as solar orientation and natural ventilation), reducing the need of energetic expenses. On the lower floor, we design a new two bedroom apartment facing the south and the surroundings. Plues, two independent extensions are built in the garden as requested by the client, as well as the redesign of all the landscaping.

The urban renovation of Fornos de Algodres Municipal Market, dated from the beginning of the century and with a large intervention on the 90’s, has two main goals: on one hand, build a closed space for events; on the other hand, to resolve some technical problems of the existing buildings. With a very tight budget, we use simple and economic materials and reuse the existing structural elements. Being an enclosed space of big scale in the center of the town, we also propose to open it to its imediate surroundings, thus making it part of the urban life in a daily basis, as well as re-arrange its building elements to create a new relation with the landscape and the built environment. Due to the low budget available, and therefore using a more industrial approach to the elements that compose the entire project, our response focused on precisely targeting the main inadequacies while at the same time providing the complex with additional flexibility in uses and additional value; for this we took particular interest in the idea of “deconstruction as construction” as well as building flexibility by subtraction of potential conditioning elements There was also an urge to restore some of the original building’s characteristics which were felt as crucial to the importance of the building in the context of the village, particularly its reminiscence of a boulevard, which is intended to restore this privileged part of the village into a reborn centrality more capable of responding to communal use.

The project is about the reconstruction of a building which dates back from the end of the 17th century, in a very degraded situation, for temporary and permanent housing. The project recovers the original architectural design features and its original structural elements, correcting some structural anomalies. The upper floor, traditionaly the main floor, is organized in an open space plan, reeing the space adjacent to the windows and openings, original elements chosen to maintain and characteristic of the building, and exalting the spatial legibility of the buildings and its connection both physical and visual with the surroundings, while connecting with the porch at the same level and respective entrance through the monastery square. The lower floor has the bedrooms, with a direct relationship with the outside. The work is completed with the exterior spaces, characterized by its relation with the interior and the creation of distinct living spaces: a porch covered area, the pathway leading to the house, the pool area and an arboreal garden.

The Ponte Nova project is about the reconstruction of two buildings currently in ruins, in order to accommodate a Restaurant and a Guest Country House. The goal is the creation of two different programs, Lodging and Restaurant, which may work independently, but in a way may and should complement each other, given the nature of its programs, and where the architecture aims to give to the project an unitary identity to the complex based on the vernacular architectural style, and assuring the due modifications in order for the required uses to be fit to contemporary needs. The main goal is to offer a product which not only is related but that it might be, in itself, an expression of the local region in which its located and may contribute to the assessment and appreciation of the local and regional heritage. The type of intervention its divided in restauration, rehabilitation and construction, due to the actual status of the existing buildings and the need to respond to the programmatic needs. The approach to the architecture project envisions to highlight the inherent qualities of the buildings and site, by the use of a vernacular style and allways creating a relationship with the surroundings which garantees the enjoyment of the site in a true way according to its real location and context.

Lima has a huge deficit of land; land for green areas, for new housing, for events, for sports facilities, etc. The progressive dismantling of the industrial zone of the Avenida Argentina, towards the periphery (Chilca, Lurín and Ancón), would present a unique opportunity for a Grand Projet for Lima: to convert the liberated 840 hectares from the industrial axis of Av. Argentina into the Great Central Park of Lima. Taking up Lima’s twentieth century models such as ‘El Olivar de San Isidro’ or ‘Residencial San Felipe’, there could be, built among its gardens, the housing and equipment that Lima’s megalopolis desperately needs. If such re-urbanization takes place, Lima would have a new green neighbourhood the size of Miraflores, housing as much population as the city of Cusco or Villa el Salvador and with a green area greater than all of Lima’s ‘Zonal Parks’ put together.

Shrimp farming in Ecuador was a booming industry in the 1970s, covering 200,000 hectares along the Pacific coast. In 1999, the ferocious ‘white spot’ virus devastated most of the farms, leaving vast trenches of the coast with abandoned, unusable salinized land, causing a great ecological disaster and economic despair for local communities. This project is an attempt to restore the coastland by building a seaside residential complex on one of those abandoned shrimp farms. The base of the design is created precisely by readjusting the former shrimp ponds and turning them into the feature for a landscape of lagoons where residential clusters are placed. In the centre of the complex, an artificially made “Crystal Lagoon” presides the whole complex for leisure and viewing purposes of the 3000 housing units.

Arawa is collective housing project part of the Karibao masterplan in Playas, Ecuador. Located around a central lagoon, the project is part of a series of buildings (mainly housing), being one of the tallest ones, with 17 floors plus a subterranean floor (parking and technical areas), with apartments of 2 and 3 dormitories, and 4 penthouses in the top floor. The building is located close to the main road that connects all the complex, thus serving as a barrier to it, leaving most of the site to outdoor spaces, which perform like a big garden closer to the lagoon. One of the building features, cleanly designed in a delta shape with stretched out center that ensures greater privacy between apartments. is that all main rooms have a clear view overseeing the sea and the lagoon. The building’s slabs are marked horizontally to break its verticality. The central axis of the building is symmetrical, thereby optimizing its spatial layout.

Constant changes in building height regulations in Lima have generated a chaotic urban profile. We believe every new building should contribute to make sense of such disparity. When asked to design new housing, on a busy corner of Avenida Javier Prado (one of the main arteries of Lima), we found a difference of ten stories between the two sides of the avenue. As a result, we aimed to harmonize the profile of the street by ‘stepping’ our building, generating a series of terraces for the upper apartments that benefitted with views towards the nearby Castilla Park. On the street level, this gesture was replicated by undercutting the corner, liberating such a congested and noisy place and creating a palm garden that honours the name of the street: Las Palmeras. The rest of that ground level is filled with communal amenities for the residents: BBQ, playgrounds, pools, cinema, gym, meeting places, etc. We also aimed to attract a diverse mix of residents with different lifestyles. Thus, diverse housing solutions were designed: 21 apartment typologies with limited editions of each, ranging from 1 to 4 bedrooms and from flats to triplex.

The majority of Lima’s densification process in the last 15 years is made through the demolition of small houses, giving birth in its place to collective housing buildings. One by one, hundreds of this buildings have been built in sites with a width approximately between 15 to 20m. The big noise from the streets and the vertiginous process of densification of the city during the last few years (where inhabitants are each time closest to one another and with more neighbors) presented us the possibility to work with more flexible ways to control privacy. In that sense, the panel system of the façade seeks to control the visual, the sun exposure, ventilation and street noise, revealing each user relationship with the exterior.

The brief of the competition for a real estate developer was a collective housing project oriented for a young and urban public, with an art concept. The proposal seeks to maximize the site area, offering a variety of apartments that at the same time may be within the standards of the real estate market of the city of Lima. The building relates with the concept of Op Art, a visual form of art that explores optical illusions, often abstract, mainly through the positioning of the windows which create a sense of movement through the juxtaposition of positive / negative space, thus responding to the premise of the competition with its own design. Unlike most collective housing buildings in the city, its proposed that the ground floor has a primary open and public role.

The typical layout was inverted in order to maximize the central area, thus generating a big garden which improves the urban quality of the coolective housing, prioritizing a communal garden instead of private ones. Better yet, we exchanged the maximum built area allowed and increased the garden area in 45%, consolidating a unique big common park of 5000 sqm, thus granting a true luxury in the city of Lima: green space. The heart of the project is the big green space in which are placed the common areas like the indoor pool, the kids pool, the gym, a squash court, and a multipurpose hall. To minimize its visual impact from the houses and maximize the green area, this spaces are covered by the garden itself and form a sunken plaza thats promotes the urbanity of the project.

Peruvian chef Ivan Kisic requested that we design a place where he could perform the experiences of his creative universe. After a series of workshops where he showed us his culinary process, field trips, recipes and details collected along his career, our job consisted in creating a built alter-ego of Ivan’s gastronomic proposal: IK restaurant. An introspective succession of contained spaces, where an interior becomes the exterior of the following space, all made with essential materials positioned to exacerbate its properties and a constant manipulation of the spaces’ scale and time. A garden, a wooden fruitbox, a black box, and a curtained pod.

An implementation of the urban need not to exceed the existing building gauges was proposed through the use of barracks in the form of an “L,” but was seen as very precarious for health and hygiene. The new camp would consist of three different zones: the service building, the Nature classrooms, and the sleeping area. With sustainability, durability, adaptability and austerity criteria characterizing the buildings, the main premises taken in account when thinking about the new project were: a project economically sustainable; a multifunctional project; an environment friendly project. The unit is proposed as a benchmark archetype and image of the imaginary world of childhood: small houses, small people, relationship with the forest, roads, and nature that allow for easy extension and expansion of the system itself.

The project’s main goal was to rehabilitate and extend the Figueiró da Granja Primary School with a pre-primary classroom, in order to increase the scholar population and avoid the closure of the building. Being it an historic building, with architectonic value and social affectivity, we proposed an entire restoration of the building’s original characteristics – it’s volumetric features and main architectonic details, such as window frames, masonries, roof tiles and woods – and the modernization of the infrastructures such as the heating system and ventilation system. In the existing building we proposed the maintaining of one room as primary school and another as pre-primary school, as well as the teachers room. In order to comply with contemporary school demands, a new volume in the back of the building will host the multipurpose room, as well as most of the technical areas required. It’s spatial solution seeks a bigger flexibility, so it can host different uses by the community.
