"I'm Just A Guy W ith A Blog!" by Joh n Buckley aka Citiz en S coop TH E FIRST TIM E I h eard Eric Rice w as back in Novem ber 20 0 4. H e w as podcasting on vacation from a steam engine at Disneyw orld Florida, via m obile ph one. I h ad no idea w h o h e w as, but som eth ing about h is snark y delivery, coupled w ith h is h um or and and an obvious enjoym ent of using tech nology struck a ch ord w ith m e. I quick ly discovered th at h e'd founded a little startup com pany called 'Audioblog', (now H ipcast), and th at th ey'd com e up w ith just about th e easiest w ay to get a podcast or a videoblog uploaded onto a w ebsite. Th ey also provided a coollittle custom isable flash -based player -- I signed up righ t aw ay.

SINCE TH AT TIM E I've k ept an eye and ear out for th e w h irlw ind of activities th at alw ays seem to surround Eric. Blogging, podcasting, videoblogging, building in Second Life, starting a (virtual) record label, or populating socialnetw ork s w ith h is observations on allth ings blogosph eric. Eric Rice is one busy guy.

W H O IS ERIC RICE? Eric, you've been called "a one m an buzzw ord" and "one of th e w orld's leading experts in consum er-generated m edia" So, w h ere are you interacting m ost righ t now and w h y? I'm caugh t up w ith in th e current trend of status and presence-based socialnetw ork s. Tw itter, Pow nce, Facebook -- as w ellas a couple of live video stream ing sites. Th e dirty little secret about m e is th at IRC is probably th e h igh est on th e list of all. So w h at's th e biggest m isconception people h ave about you? Th ere are a couple. People eith er don't k now w h at I do OR th ey th ink I'm really busy and doing a lot of projects. Th e truth is th at m ost of th ese individual projects are allrelated or require th e exact sam e efforts. Th e bad part about th is is th e m isconception th at I'm too busy to talk to, or th at a project or idea isn't good enough to even both er m e w ith . I love w ork ing on aw esom e stuff w ith oth er people! It's th at w h ole bizarre notion of 'celebrity' in th e new m edia space. W h o is Spin Martin, and h ow is h e different to Eric Rice?

'Spin M artin' w as th e nam e I pick ed for m yself w h en I cam e back to Second Life in late 20 0 5. In SL, everyone is given a list of surnam es to ch oose from , and th e first nam e is open (if available, th at is). I lik ed 'Spin' since it represented so m uch : from spiders spinning a w eb - a naturalpiece of beauty - to Spin Art, to m usic spinning, to PR spin. I h ad m y first professionalcorporate w ebm aster job in 19 9 5 and sure, 'spin a w eb' certainly cam e into play. Page 32 - Issue 19 : August 2007

w w w .podcastusermagaz ine.com

Spin w as never intentionally supposed to be different from m e, it w as just m y nam e in SL. And SLw as actually k ind of lonely. I k ept to m yself and explored and built. As m y real-life self becam e m ore k now n to Second Lifers, 'Spin' w as a nam e people referred to m e-- lik e m any SLers do, especially after m eeting in reallife at th e second SLconference. After th at, I h ad used 'Spin' on Tw itter, because I w anted to see if w riting in 140 ch aracter ch unk s w ould be a good fiction-w riting experim ent. Th at only lasted for 25 friends, th ough , before I started using Tw itter norm ally. Am usingly, because you h ave to specify som eone's nam e on Tw itter w ith th e @ sym bol, anyone I k new w as inadvertently forced to 'address' m e as Spin. And so, now it's a nick nam e. W h at's th e one piece of tech nology you can't live w ith out and w h y? A ph one. No, m ak e th at a ph one *th at w ork s*. I'm dropping VOIP and going back to a norm al teleph one line at h om e. I h ave m y cellph one, w h ich doesn't w ork at h om e because I'm in th e country. Allth is fantastic tech nology th at h as and certainly w illcontinue to ch ange th ings is th e m ost irritating th ing to dealw ith w h en actual life experiences com e into play-- never h aving a h eadset h andy, w anting to grab th e ph one and leave th e room -- even just spending tim e NOT TYPING. Just. Please. Call. Me. Instead. Out of allth e m edia you're involved w ith , w h at do you m ost enjoy? Gam ing actually, but only because I h ave faith th at th e w alled garden of th e video gam e industry w illstart to crum ble because of allth e virtualw orlds lik e Second Life, K aneva, and oth ers th at em erge. Gam ing is a place w h ere a ton of th ings h appen at once... and if you can use Ph otosh op, or are good w ith audio, or video and th e overall concept of m oving im ages and sound, and finally, m ulti-user socialinteraction--- allof th ose th ings are present in gam ing. It's th e ultim ate m ash up and one of th e last m edia frontiers th at's closed. Th at's w h y Second Life really m atters-- because w h at's going on th ere is w h at w e've been th rough TH REE TIMES already. Once w ith blogging, once w ith podcasting, once w ith vlogging. It's an absolute rush to be able to m ak e m edia in any form : text, audio, video, ph otos, 3D, social... and I enjoy th at im m ensely.

AS I’M W RITING th is, th e re are ove r 33,000 podcasts l iste d on Podcast Al l e y. Th at sh ow you just found – th e sixth be st rate d sh ow in its cate gory – is virtual l y unl iste nabl e . I’m w il l ing to be t

It doe sn’t m atte r if pe opl e l iste n be cause th e y l ove you or h ate you, as l ong as th e y l iste n. No one care s if you’re a truck e r and you podcast from stops al ong your trip. Th at’s boring. Th ink w h at you w ant, but I’m te l l ing you –it’s boring. D rive your truck off an e m bank m e nt and m aybe I’l ltune in. A re cording of you w ate ring your pl ants is boring.
