Int ro du ci ng . . .

2017 sees Pat’s People enter its seventh year of fundraising for St James’s Hospital in Leeds. Six months after I lost my wife Patricia to gallbladder cancer in February 2010, I became a registered fundraiser for the Ray of Hope Trust Fund (ref 5T41), which is affiliated to the Hepatobiliary Department at St James’s, and is part of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Charitable Foundation Registered Charity Number 1075308. In September 2010 I set up Pat’s People with my son Stephen, and to date we have managed to raise £30,000 for the charity, thanks largely to the support we have received from the world famous Black Dyke Band. Prior to this year 6 successful Brass Band concerts have been held - at Morley, Dewsbury and four in Ossett, all of which have been very well received. I am delighted that Black Dyke have agreed to play for us again for our seventh concert this year which i’m sure will be equally appreciated by those who attend and by the Ray of Hope Trust Fund. Pat was taken ill at the end of November 2009, was only officially diagnosed with cancer at the beginning of January, and by the 7th February 2010 I had lost her, barely 10 weeks since she had first been taken into hospital. It was only after transferral to St James’s that I really understood just how sick Pat was, and despite the best efforts of Mr Giles Toogood, the Consultant Hepatobilary Surgeon and his dedicated team at St James’s, it was too late and there was nothing that could be done. Pat and I had been together since 1963, and my life was turned upside down. It has taken me a long time to come to terms with my situation, but I feel that continuing with my fundraising is a great help, and I shall carry on as long as I can, in Pat’s memory and to hopefully help others to overcome this disease. Gallbladder cancer, part of the Hepatobiliary strain, is a rare and aggressive form of the disease and in Pat’s case, diagnosis came far too late to save her. Although the Oncology Department at St James’s is world renowned, Hepatobiliary research still lags well behind in terms of manpower and funding. There are usually seven Research fellows working specifically in this area, and it costs each one approximately £10,000 annually in laboratory expenses alone, so you can see what they are up against. The key factor in this campaign is diagnosis time. It is impossible now to know how far in advance correct diagnosis would have been needed to give Pat a fighting chance, but if we can assist research into the disease and help to save the life of just one person in the process, it will have been worthwhile. Enjoy the concert, and thank you for your support! Sincerely, Graham Willis, Telephone 01924 266393 or email geewill41@yahoo.co.uk

St. James’s University Hospital St James’s is internationally famous as Europe’s largest teaching hospital. It is home to services including acute and elderly medicine, A & E, a number of surgical specialities, as well as being a world renowned centre for highly specialised organ transplantations. St James’s is a major centre for high-tech patient care, teaching and research, and its network of buildings is a landmark visible for miles across the city. The flagship is the £220 million Bexley Wing, home to the St James’s Institute of Oncology, which contains ten floors dedicated to some of the best treatment for cancer patients available anywhere in the world. The top floor of the Bexley Wing is home to a special “hotel” which helps meet the needs of cancer patients and their families who live further a field and cannot easily travel to and from home. The Radiology Department at St James’s has been totally transformed thanks to an £850,000 investment which has brought services together in a central location in the Chancellor’s Wing. The bright and modern new high-tech facility, next to the A & E Department, was officially opened in September 2012.

The work has totally remodelled the existing X-ray Department in the Chancellor’s Wing, which was redesigned to maximise the available use of space. This has allowed services from the X-ray Department and the Ultra Sound Department in the Lincoln Wing to move into the new facility, bringing staff together into an integrated service for the first time with all the latest equipment. Just before Christmas 2014, the new Cardiovascular Clinical Research Facility (CV-CRF) in the Jubilee Wing was officially opened by Mr Edward Ziff, Chair of the Leeds Teaching Hospitals Charitable Foundation, which provided funding of £250,000 in staff and infrastructure to make the facility a reality. The new location provides access for patients to early phase and high quality research into diseases of the heart and blood vessels. It also allows protected space for teams from the hospital and the University of Leeds to conduct this important research.

In October last year, HRH The Countess of Wessex, the Royal Patron of Leeds Children’s Hospital met with members of the Hospital’s Youth Forum, and officially opened their newly created meeting place, The Place 2be @ LTHT. The facility is a dedicated space for teenagers to give them a meeting place away from the wards.

Also last December, DayOne, the trauma support charity for patients treated in the major trauma centre at LGI received a massive grant of £368,000 from the Wyss Medical Foundation, based in Washington DC, after being contacted by trauma consultant Professor Peter Giannoudis, the founder of Day One.

In December 2016 Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust officially opened its new Elektra Versa TM HD linear accelerator (Linac), marking the start of a multi million pound investment and a four year equipment replacement programme. Seven additional linear accelerators will be replaced with this state of the art technology with a new Versa HD treatment machine coming on-line every six months.

In January this year, LTH NHS Trust and local home care provider Villa Care Group have signed an agreement to open the Bilberry Unit, a facility which will provide 26 additional beds at Wharfedale Hospital in Otley for a six month period as part of the Trust’s winter plan. 5

The Leeds Teaching Hospitals Charitable Foundation

The Leeds Teaching Hospitals Charitable Foundation is run by an independently appointed board of Trustees. It is entirely separate from the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust , The Leeds University School of Medicine and the NHS in general, although it works very closely with all of these organisations. The overall aim of the Charitable Foundation is to assist the NHS Trust by providing additional resources to aid the continual improvement in clinical performance and patient care. The Charitable Foundation raises funds through various appeals as well as providing support and encouragement for NHS staff and members of the general public. It also receives donations, legacies and grants for the benefit of the NHS Trust, and supervises the implementation of donor's wishes through the efficient management of all three funds which also generates additional income. All funds are dispersed throughout the Trust in accordance with the donors wishes. This is supervised by the Foundation Board, advised by four groups, one each for items of medical equipment, training and education, patient and staff support and research and development. Each group is chaired by one of the Trustees with co-opted input as appropriate from members of the Trust and University staff. The foundation is accountable to the Charities Commission for the efficient performance of these tasks. Fundraising for wards and clinical specialities continues throughout the year by NHS staff. The Foundation's small fundraising team mounts a wide range of initiatives and current ongoing projects involve The Yorkshire Cancer Centre Appeal, The Leeds Children's Hospital Appeal, work with the Breast Cancer Research Action Group, The Yorkshire Brain Research Centre, The Helipad Fire Response Team and DayOne Trauma Care. Your support is vital in helping the Foundation to assist others and make “best out of better”.

The Ray of Hope Trust at St James's Hospital

Ray of Hope is a charity which raises funds to support research into cancer conditions of the liver. During the last 20 years many patients, relatives, friends and other contributors have kindly donated money to the cause. Well in excess of £5 million has been raised during this period.

It costs approximately £10,000 to fund a research fellow to undertake research in a laboratory per year. Most of the fellows are junior surgeons working towards a Doctorate of Medicine (MD) or a Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD), who tend to spend two – three years in full time research. Approximately seven research fellows are in post at any one time and produce several national and international publications per year. Jennifer Kingston (one of the research fellows) has been awarded a Royal College of Surgeons research Fellowship to enable her to complete her PhD. Unfortunately, at time of going to press, no photo of Jennifer was available.

In 1816 Peter Wharton founded a brass and reed band in the Yorkshire village of Queenshead – later to become Queensbury. John Foster, apart from being the founder of Black Dyke Mills, played French Horn in this band. It has been said on many occasions that Black Dyke was formed from it; however this is not strictly true, as “Peter Wharton’s band went out of existence through loss of members”. In 1833 a new band was formed named ‘Queenshead Band’, which may well have contained players from the former band. It is reported that this Band reached its Zenith from 1838 to 1843, at which time it consisted of 18 musicians. On the 15th September 2005 the band were proud to celebrate their 150th anniversary, two of the many highlights were the publication of “150 Golden Years”, a book by Dr. Roy Newsome, in word and photograph, describing the history and the progress of Black Dyke Band from 1855 to 2005. Also a unique ‘triple CD’ covering the recorded musical history of the band from the early days of 1903 to the present day. Black Dyke Band is the most recorded band in the world with over 350 recordings and growing every year. It is also the most successful contesting band in the world having won the European Championships thirteen times, most recently in 2015, the British Open no fewer than 30 times (most recently 2014) and the National Championships of Great Britain 23 times (most recently 2014). In 2009, and again in 2011, 2012 and 2013, the band became Champion Band at the English National Championships and were named English National Champions in 2014 by virtue of having won the National Brass Band Championships in October 2014.

Yorkshire Youth Brass Band. The purpose is to inspire and motivate young people aged 11 to 21 years to achieve their full potential as musicians, composers and citizens. The band logo of the stags head and Latin quotation are taken from the armorial bearings granted in 1857 to John Foster, founder of the band. The quotation translates to “ACT JUSTLY AND FEAR NOTHING” In April 2016 it was announced that Black Dyke had been awarded £61,500 from the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of total funding of £94,500 that the Black Dyke Band Heritage and Archive Project will receive to enable it to make its vast collection of memorabilia, music and historic banding artefacts accessible to the world. The project will also see a comprehensive cataloguing and digitising of music from the first 100 years of Black Dyke’s remarkable history dating back to its formation in 1855. In May last year the project coincided with the 40th anniversary of Black Dyke being awarded the Freedom of the City of Bradford. The Band will work with Black Dyke Mills Heritage Centre and Local History Society as well as the West Yorkshire Local Authority Music Hubs in developing the project, and later this year there will be a large scale launch event to celebrate the project which will be staged in Bradford.

In August 2007 the Band were invited to take part in the BBC Promenade Concerts, at the Royal Albert Hall, London. In 2006 as part of its initiative to sponsor the work of young people, Black Dyke Band, under the guidance of Dr. Nicholas Childs assisted by qualified members, formed the

Tonight we have the pleasure of welcoming Philip Goodwin as conductor of the Black Dyke Band. Philip comes from Stoke on Trent and has been at Black Dyke since 1985. he has also appeared with many orchestras including the Halle, BBC Northern, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Welsh National opera. Upon leaving college Philip took up the teaching profession, progressing over the years and is now Director of Music at the William Hulme Grammar School in Manchester. It is fair to say that music is Philip's life and when not teaching he is either playing or conducting. He has a huge commitment to the musical education of young people, both in his local community and as a tutor with the National Youth Brass Band.

This evening we welcome guest vocalist Bridget Budge. Bridget took up singing whilst reading for a music degree at Trinity College, Cambridge. She has an extremely true contralto voice, and after completing her vocal studies at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and the Royal College of Music, she went on to specialise in oratorio and concert work both here in the UK and widely in Germany. Bridget has sung on a regular basis with choral societies up and down the country, and has also been a favourite vocalist for Summer Proms concerts, appearing with Black Dyke on numerous occasions. An arrangement for her, with the band, of the Elgar Sea Pictures by Philip Wilby was sung as part of a brass festival in Manchester and recorded by BBC Radio 3. Bridget has an extensive recital repertoire in addition to which there are specialist programmes on Clara Butt and Kathleen Ferrier. Her particular interest is the history of the contralto and to this end she works regularly with the brilliant young pianist Jonathan Ellis, in attempting to re-introduce the idea of the true contralto voice to the public.

And did the countenance divine Shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here Among those dark satanic mills? Bring me my bow of burning gold! Bring me my arrows of desire! Bring me my spear! O clouds unfold! Bring me my chariot of fire! I will not cease from mental fight, Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand, Till we have built Jerusalem In England's green and pleasant land.

Rule Brittannia – Chorus Lyrics Rule, Britannia! Britannia rules the waves! Britons never, never, never shall be slaves. When Britain first, at Heaven's command, Arose from out the azure main, This was the charter of the land, And Guardian Angels sang this strain: The nations not so blest as thee Must, in their turn, to tyrants fall, While thou shalt flourish great and free; The dread and envy of them all. Still more majestic shalt thou rise, More dreadful from each foreign stroke, As the loud blast that tears the skies Serves but to root thy native oak.

Bass Trombone Land of Hope and Glory, Mother of the Free, Adrian Hirst How shall we extol thee, who are born of thee? Wider still and wider, shall thy bounds be set; God, who made thee mighty, make thee mightier yet! Truth and Right and Freedom, each a holy gem, Stars of solemn brightness, weave thy diadem. Tho' thy way be darkened, still in splendour rest, As the star that trembles o'er the liquid West. Throned amid the billows, throned inviolate, Thou hast reigned victorious, thou hast smiled at fate. Land of Hope and Glory, fortress of the Free, How may we extol thee, praise thee, honour thee?
