Martin Potts Memorial Game 2017 Queensbury Rugby, Open Age and Juniors, are proud to come together to remember Martin and all that he stood for in rugby. Once again this year we have seen many sad headlines of other clubs losing players, both on and off the field, but the way the rugby family pulls together shows what a special game we are all part of. Queensbury rugby, from Tigers to Open Age, continues to grow and we look forward to sharing our successes with the community. Thank you to every player, coach, volunteer, parent, supporter and sponsors. Without you we cannot achieve what we do. To Kylie and the team at Queensbury Conservative Club, may the chicken nuggets never end or the pumps run dry, thank you for your continued hospitality and support. To Darren and the team at Halifax RU, many thanks for your gracious welcome and endless assistance. To all our sponsors who help fund events like today, the Ireland Tour and Rhinos Challenge. Your support is invaluable, we thank you whole heartedly. And finally, to the members of Martin’s family joining us to day thank you for your continued support, we hope the day is a fitting tribute to a much loved and admired man.

Queensbury Juniors ARLFC Queensbury rugby started back in 1938 by Keith Llewellyn in Littlemoor as the “All Blacks” and ran from the Stags Head, they had an excellent record for producing professional players. Keith sadly passed away in 2001 but his dream, of teams from U8 to U18, lives on in the shape of Queensbury Juniors. The 1996/1997 Bradford Cup win for the U8s, 12 – 10 against Wibsey coached by Keith and Bob Boocock, was the inspiration for all that followed. Keith was always a gentleman and genuine sportsman and the example he set in showing no job was too great or too small, be it marking the pitch on rainy days or blowing up the match balls, has been the inspiration for all who followed. Without Keith and his dream Queensbury Juniors would not exist in the way they do today and the Keith Llewellyn Memorial Shield is presented to the Club Man of the Year at U12s. We currently run teams at U8, U10, U15, U16, and U16 Girls and have Tigers training sessions for those too young to play. HALIFAX RUFC Halifax RUFC was founded in 1919, after the First World War, when the British Expeditionary Force returned home victorious from France. Following a meeting of forty men in a field behind Asquith Engineers at High Road Well, the modern Halifax RUFC was initiated and named West End OB, after that district of Halifax. In the ensuing years the club moved four times playing matches at Broomfield (now home to Old Crossleyans RUFC), Spring Hall (off Huddersfield Road), Friendly Fields & Ovenden Cross. The final move to Ovenden Park came in 1925, where Halifax RUFC has now played for 92 seasons. On 21st September 1950, Sir William Wavell Wakefield attended Ovenden Park to name it The Standeven Memorial Park in memory of the Standeven family, who have done so much for the club, but the new title never took on and the ground remains Ovenden Park to all its members. Halifax RUFC has had many milestones throughout it’s history including; •
Holding the record for the most wins in the Yorkshire Challenge Cup (13 times)
•
International honours for Michael Campbell Lamerton, who earned the supreme honour of captaining the British Lions on the tour to New Zealand in 1966.
•
The club played in the first National Knock-out cup-tie ever to be played, defeating Gosforth at Ovenden Park in September 1972 and going on to the last eight at Moseley.
•
Floodlights were installed and opened with a Presidents XV v International XV fixture in September 1986.
•
The inaugural Halifax Sevens Tournament took place in 1986, which for several years attracted the very best sides from all over the British Isles - Swansea, Richmond, Jedforest, London Irish and Headingley.
•
In three successive seasons, Halifax were crowned Champions of North East 1 in 1999/2000, of North 2 East in 2000/2001, and of North 1 in 2001/2002 thus reaching National League status.
•
Also in 2002, Halifax won the Powergen Intermediate Cup at Twickenham where they triumphed over Gosport and Fareham (43-19). 512 clubs entered the competition and to win on the ‘hallowed turf’ was an unbelievable experience for the whole club.
The semi-professional days at Halifax RUFC are now distant memories as the club has changed it’s focus and is fully amateur. We work closely with the local community and have strong links with Ovenden Initiative, North Halifax Forum, Moorside School, Trinity Academy, Community Alcohol Programme & local Police. On Wednesdays we host Men United, where elderly gentlemen meet for a cup of tea and a chat. On the playing front we have 3 senior mens teams, including Vets; a thriving Ladies team; Halifax Magpies, a team of Mixed Ability players who have a link with Pennine Magpies on Club Lane; a new Junior Section for Year 9 and Year 8 players. There’ll always be a warm welcome at Ovenden Park, so come and find out why we love it so much!

Martin Potts or Pottsie as everyone knew him
In his own words (when he was 20) ……. I live in Queensbury with my mum, dad and my brother Steve and work in a warehouse in Thornton. I went to school at Heath School in Halifax, where I first started playing Rugby Union. At fourteen I went to play Rugby League for Siddal u15s with a couple of friends, one of who was Johnny Harmer. After a year at Siddal I seemed to lose interest in playing League and just played Union at school. Then when I was seventeen, some friends of my Dads – who were then Northern supporters – told me to come down and train with the Colts. After an initial rude awakening, I began to improve little by little and learn the game. Then at nineteen I was fortunate enough to be signed on as a professional – something I owe to too many people to mention. Away from rugby I enjoy the odd night out!!! And in the summer I like to play cricket. I fancy myself as a bit of a batsman, although many would disagree. Obviously like all players, I would like to play and Wembley & gain representative honours, but at the moment my main ambition is to get into the First Team, and then hopefully build on that and win some medals with this club. (words taken from Meet your Team in Bradford Northern programme)
Have a Great Day and don’t forget what it’s about

What is motor neurone disease (MND)? Motor neurone disease (MND) is a rare neurological condition that causes the degeneration (deterioration and loss of function) of the motor system (the cells and nerves in the brain and spinal cord which control the muscles in our bodies). This results in weakness and wasting of the muscles. MND is progressive and symptoms worsen over time. Sadly, MND severely reduces life expectancy and most people with MND die within five years of the onset of symptoms. What are the symptoms of MND? MND symptoms are progressive and worsen over time. Symptoms initially experienced in distinct parts of the body will eventually spread to the rest of the body. MND does not usually cause cognitive problems or affect an individual’s intellect. The main symptoms of MND: Muscle wasting (this is often first noticed in the muscles in one hand, or in one arm or leg) Muscle weakness (it might be difficult to open bottles or jars, carry heavy objects, or climb stairs) Fasciculations (involuntary contractions of part of a muscle, often felt as flickers of movement or small twitches just under the skin) Speech problems Swallowing problems and excessive saliva (drooling) Cramps and muscle spasms (spasticity) In the later stages of MND, the muscles weaken in the chest, back and neck and people experience difficulties with breathing. Contacts Run by neuroscience nurses, providing support and information on all aspects of neurological conditions for patients, their families and carers, and health professionals.
