ESC SPORTS CENTER
MFA Thesis project
INFORMATION CENTER Lobby BIONIC TECH The lobby of Esc sports center was inspired by bionic technology. This high technology is now in use to help injured people reclaim their normal life, and even facilitate their participation in sports. Oscar Pistorius is a good example of an athlete improving his life by bionic technology. He has worn prosthetic legs since he was eleven years old, but he never quit sports. Symbolically, this space tells visitors never to give up. In order to present this high technology in Esc Sports Center, metal is the main material used. Lines represent the structure of machine; all the metal lines lead to the interactive wall which shows information and exciting pictures. This can make the information center (reception) become a focal point to guide people going to the building. The bridge above the information center is a place for people to take a break, and also to see the view. A cool color skin in the lobby depicts the coolness of robotics, as well as counter the hot weather in Kaohsiung.
ROCKY Rock Climbing Area BODY MOVEMENT After we walk through the lobby upon entry into the building, the 69 feet high rock climbing wall becomes a focal point of Esc Sports Center. This area is an atrium as well as a rock climbing area. I named it “Rocky” because I wanted to give it an interesting feeling and remind people to be tough. The concept of this space is developed by climbers’ continuous body movement. In climbing up, passion and patience are indispensable conditions to success. Behind the wall are resting areas on each floor which are for people to take rest after exercise. In the resting area people can see through the glass between rock climbing walls to enjoy the view of the atrium, and see the climbers climbing up. This way people can have interesting feelings like they are also climbing even they are not actually doing it. Lighting lines on the wall become circulation of public space and are easy for people to follow. The pattern is repeated on the roof and floor, continuing the theme. If there is an event or concert, this place will become a space for people to gather. The customized holds on the wall will glow and change color by following music. The resting area behind the wall also becomes a bar and serves drinks to people. In order to maximize the effect and use of the Rocky rock climbing area, I used multi-functional design.
ESSENCE Restaurant ELEGANT BODY SHAPE Heart breaker is an indoor paintball field. I named it as a heart breaker is because while people play paintball, they always want to defeat their opponents to win the game. The concept was inspired by humans’ heartbeat. The heartbeat becomes fast and the rhythm becomes short when people are in the exciting game. So I broke the electrocardiograms and made it become the elements of this paintball field, such as blocks and lighting fixtures on the wall and ceiling. Acrylic, glass floor, and aluminum make up the wall surfaces, because these materials are hard to break by such an exciting game, and are easy to clean. In order to create an exciting feeling in this space, I used a very dramatic graphic interior on the wall, ceiling, and blocks. By using different lighting color skins, players are brought into different modes while they are playing the game.

ESC x NIKE Retail Store JOINT & FLEXIBILITY Nike x Esc is a concept store crossover by Nike and Esc Sports Center which is going to present the idea about “function, fusion, fashion”. The concept of it was inspired by humans’ joint. Joints are very flexible and also connect all the parts of the human body, and this is why people can move their bodies smoothly. It is easy to get injured while people do exercises, so people need equipment to protect their bodies. Based on a joint’s flexibility I designed all the display areas to be flexible- they can be moved, rotated, and changed. In this retail store, staff can change a shelf’s amount and size to fit in different products. There are Nike sports gears, Nike iD, Nike+, and Nike sportswear in the store. For the gears part, I am using the rotatable box to become a display area. Each box can put the newest poster in it and play with the pattern or image by rotating to different angles. In order to separate different catalogs for each display box, I use different lighting skin to make it easy for people to notice it. On the other side of the store are Nike sportswear and Nike iD. Nike sportswear is more like street fashion clothing, so I would like to bring more rough feeling in this space by using rusty metal and containers. Nike iD is about customized personal shoes and clothes with different colors, so I put touch screen on the wall for customers to design their own shoes. I am using glass boxes and putting the colorful shoes in it on the ceiling to be the lighting fixture which has three different layers with different heights. All of them can follow the track to running the circle. By this way, it becomes an interesting focal point in this area. I used functional design in this space which can make this space more flexible and easy to use.
FORBIDDEN FRUIT HOTEL Hospitality Design Project
FORBIDDEN FRUIT HOTEL Hospitality Design GOSSIP GIRLS Forbidden fruit hotel is a high-fashion boutique hotel with affordable price. This hotel is located in downtown san Francisco. The owner wants to turn a old business building into a different style hotel than other nearby hotels. Design concept of this hotel is base on an American drama called “Gossip Girls” which is about complicated relationships between young men and women who are struggling with finding true love and fighting seduction of life. The black and white color gives the simple and modern feel in the hotel. For the furniture, the mix use of antique furniture along with new material to makes it very unique. The sexy pictures on the wall deco help bring out human’s inside desire.
GUATEMALA ECO RESORT
Sustainable Design Project
GUATEMALA ECO RESORT Sustainable Design THE CYCLE OF LIFE Guatemala eco resort is a sustainable design project. This resort is located on the mountain with many huge avocado trees surround it, because the owner wants to provide the great view and natural experience for tourists. The concept of this resort is cycle of life. This idea is from the avocado seeds, because the seed brings more life to the world. By this meaning, we hope all the customers in this resort can feel relax and rebirth. In order to save energy, I calculated the sunlight chart to bring more lights into the building, put the solar panels on the roof to charge the batteries, recycle the waters, and use the sustainable material.
JOHNNIE WALKER OFFICE Office Design Project
JOHNNIE WALKER OFFICE Office Design GENTLEMAN Johnnie Walker is one of the famous whisky companies. Design concept is to be a successful gentleman. I used the wine making process to performance how a man through the life experiences to become a mature man. Wheat, wine barrels, cigar, whisky glass, rock are all becoming the elements in this office. Those elements bring out the elegant, high quality, good taste atmosphere. In order to bring a different style to this office, I designed reception waiting area looks like a wine bar. It becomes a focal point when clients come into office. About the material, I choose wood, stainless steel, and white marble to create strong and heavy feeling to give an image of a tough man.
