LEARN AND EXPERIENCE A Hope education means real-world learning experiences, close collaborations with faculty and the best of the liberal arts tradition combined with a commitment to graduate school-style research. Choose from more than 90 majors, minors and pre-professional programs. If you decide to double-major, you’ll be in good company — a surprising number of Hope students combine unexpected subjects (think chemistry and dance). These intellectual “intersections” can propel you into pioneering fields such as biotechnology, global politics and Christianity in the Latino culture. Some of your most powerful learning experiences at Hope will happen outside of the classroom. Collaborating with classmates to build — and race — a Formula SAE car Presenting a documentary film about victims of the civil war in Sierra Leone Performing on stage at the Jack H. Miller Center for Musical Arts Improving water quality a few miles from your residence hall — or in a Central American village A Hope College education is built on practical experience, personal attention and more than 150 years of preparing graduates for exciting work and fulfilling lives.

ATHLETICS Be Strong. Be True. It’s Friday night in the majestic DeVos Fieldhouse and the place is packed. Hope students, faculty and loyal fans from the Holland community are all here to cheer on the national champion volleyball team. It’s loud, shoulder-to-shoulder and bursting with orange and blue. Winning is a tradition at Hope. So is good sportsmanship, selfless teamwork and competing for the love of the game. We couldn’t be prouder of our 22 varsity NCAA Division III teams for men and women, including two recent national champions and several perennial powerhouses in the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA). We’re equally proud of our high-achieving academic all-Americans and the winners of the annual Hopeys, student-nominated awards that recognize both athletic prowess and personal integrity. Athletics are a way of life at Hope, and there are countless ways to take part. It’s easy to find your team at Hope, from serious club competition to just-for-fun intramurals and sailing Lake Michigan.

YOUR FACULTY The unique strength of a Hope education flows from the close relationships forged between our faculty and students. Hope faculty are active researchers and nationally renowned experts in their fields. More important, they are dedicated mentors and persistent advocates for their students’ success, inside and outside of class. Faculty-student collaboration isn’t an exception at Hope — it’s an expectation. Across all of Hope’s more than 90 majors, you’ll find professors working individually with students to provide practical, hands-on learning experiences. Together, they are co-authoring and publishing journal articles, premiering original theater productions and launching social entrepreneurship start-ups. All of Hope’s varsity athletic coaches are also professors, a rarity in American college sports and further proof of our faculty’s full commitment to their students and their school.

I don’t think you’re going to find an institution that’s more engaged with facultystudent relationships. Matthew Farmer Assistant professor of dance

YOUR RESEARCH Hope is famous for its commitment to hands-on student research. What does student research look like at Hope? In two words: collaborative and creative. Whatever your major, you’ll work side by side with professors on meaningful, graduate-style research projects. Study the neuroscience of sports concussions. Discover how to improve vaccinations in Zambia. Choreograph an original dance for the Fringe Festival in Scotland. At Hope, you can travel to Italy on a research grant, present a paper at a national genetics conference or join a team of students developing a groundbreaking app. Of course, this experience looks great on a graduate school application, but more importantly, it launches you personally as a leader, scholar and independent thinker.

STUDENT LIFE What’s life really like at Hope? Busy, but in a good way. Hope’s student activities committee packs the calendar with concerts, comedy shows, “drive-in” movies and weekend trips to Chicago and Detroit. Looking for something new? Attend a “big idea” symposium with TED-worthy speakers, get on stage with the gospel choir or rally for a good cause with Dance Marathon and Relay for Life. There are more than 80 student-run clubs and organizations at Hope and countless ways to get involved on campus and in the community. The whole school goes wild for time-honored traditions such as The Pull — it’s so much more than “tug-of-war” — and the song, dance and dramatic performance explosion known as Nykerk. Holland is the ideal college town, with friendly cafés, annual film and cultural festivals, miles of bike and cross-country skiing trails, and addictive late-night donuts. Sometimes it’s fun just to hang out with friends at “home” — campus housing options include 11 coed and single-sex residence halls, 66 cozy cottages and 21 apartment buildings.

The Chapel Experience Faith is a fixture of student life at Hope. Four times a week, more than 1,100 Hope students fill the Chapel with contemporary worship and song. Chapel attendance isn’t mandatory, but it’s a great way to approach the Gospel with fresh eyes, find fellowship with friends and recommit yourself to what matters most. Says Senior Chaplain Paul Boersma, “Everyone is welcome to the conversation.” 19

LEARNING COMMUNITIES Some of the most life-changing learning experiences start with a conversation. By joining a residential community, you’ll surround yourself with people who share your ideals, your excitement for discovery and your open-minded curiosity. In the Day1 Research Communities, you can tackle real-world scientific problems — pollution in the Great Lakes or rapidly mutating viruses — from your first day at Hope. In the Emmaus Scholars Program, you’ll live among and serve alongside a diverse group of committed Christians. And our language houses offer face-to-face interactions with native speakers in French, German and Spanish.

STUDY ABROAD Immerse yourself in Spanish or Mandarin Chinese. Forge real friendships that bridge cultural or political divides. Learn first hand about the history, tradition and day-to-day life of a new and fascinating home. When you live and learn abroad, what was once foreign becomes familiar. And you’ll return to Hope as a global citizen with a new and lasting appreciation for the diversity of human experience.

The Phelps Scholars Program The Phelps Scholars Program brings together Hope students looking to explore issues of race and social justice in an immersive living/learning community. The Association of American Colleges and Universities

There are so many ways for you to experience the world at Hope. You can spend a traditional semester abroad through 300 full-immersion programs in 60 countries. Or you can sign up for one of Hope’s intensive four-week May or June terms. Recent faculty-led trips explored peace and reconciliation in Scotland and Northern Ireland, health care and healing in Mexico, and religion and philosophy in India. Your experiences abroad will impact you for life. Like thousands of other Hope graduates, you might apply for a Fulbright grant to teach and study abroad. You might apply to graduate programs in international business. Or you might choose to refocus your future legal career on immigration policy and refugee advocacy.
