With our Leisure facilities moving on this year as the city’s brand new multi-million pound Life Centre opens, I feel it’s a perfectly fitting time to celebrate the successes of the last 20 years. Last year the Rink and Pool enjoyed over £1million worth of admissions for the first time ever, and a range of events in the Arena saw Plymouth continuing to punch above its weight on the national touring circuit.

Set in a late night bar in downtown Buenos Aires and featuring some of the finest Tango dancers in the world, Midnight Tango takes you on a journey into a heart of this intoxicating city. As danger and excitement, joy and jealousy, pain and passion all combine – this is a spectacular and explosive evening not to be missed! Both Vincent and Flavia are true born Italians; however whilst Vincent came to England in his late teens, Flavia came to England as a very young child.

All of Vincent’s family are dancers so his career is something that, he says, “was bound to happen as dancing is such a massive part of Italian life”. His parents are professional dance teachers in both Ballroom and Latin and his sister although at university manages to

“It’s so passionate and Flavia and I just love performing it so much” Vincent says that both he and Flavia are very moody so they like the types of dance where they can reflect this. One of their favourite dances is the Rumba as “It’s so seductive and sexy and complements our Italian mood!” but their main love is the Argentine Tango as “It’s so passionate and Flavia and I just love performing it so much”.

Flavia started dancing at six when her parents sent her to Saturday classes at a dance school in Guildford. One of six children and always encouraged to participate in extra curricular activities, all her siblings had attended ballet classes in Italy, however on arrival here, there was no suitable ballet class locally so Flavia was sent to ‘Danceschool’ - a local ballroom school.

• The Roman Emperor, Vitellus invented a pie made from the tongues of flamingos and brains of peacocks! • A Roman cure for snake bite was to rub pig droppings onto the bite and then pour wine mixed with the herb Fennel up your nose! • Egyptian remedies were just as bad... To cure baldness they mixed viper’s oil with bat ears and rubbed it all over the bald patch. If you had a toothache you were advised to cut a live mouse in half then while it was warm and fresh place it in your mouth. • To show his success in battle an Egyptian soldier would take home the severed right hand of each of the dead he’d killed so the Pharaohs could count the number of their enemy’s soldiers they’d killed in the battle!
Birmingham Stage are one of the UK’s most successful companies at staging children’s classics for family audiences. Their past triumphs include several adaptations of Dahl stories like George’s Marvellous Medicine, James and the Giant Peach and Danny the Champion of the World, plus Tom’s Midnight Garden, The Jungle Book, more Horrible Histories productions, and of course the mind boggling Horrible Science which visited the Pavilions back in May 2010! These two ‘Horrible Histories’ shows are both great fun and also show children (and adults!) what it was really like to live in the Roman and Egyptian periods - concentrating on the aspects most history books and teachers don’t tell you about – they manage to be horribly ‘yucky’ and very funny while still teaching you lots of useful historical facts!
Feature
The Ruthless Romans shows how the Romans made murder into a sport in the Coliseum. There are eight evil Emperors, lots of killer Kings plus masses of gory gladiators and grim ghouls. You will really feel what it was like to be a Roman soldier in the greatest army the world has ever seen – including having to duck lots of arrows thanks to the 3D Bogglevision! In The Awful Egyptians you will be looking over Howard Carter’s shoulder as he peers into Tutankhamen’s tomb for the very first time. You’ll learn the truth about the creepy curses, ‘phabulous’ Pharaohs, mean mummies and gruesome grave robbers, on this fabulously horrible journey into the land of the Pharaohs! Current Director of Programming and Marketing Gavin Marshall muses about the line-up, “It sounds like a rather unorthodox pairing, and I don’t think it’s unkind to say that the first year or two of the Pavilions’ life weren’t a roaring success. The charitable trust that also runs the Theatre Royal were invited to take over the running of the complex in 1993, and it’s a move that has since enriched the experience of both our Arena and Rink and Pool customers. Our charitable objectives mean that we can provide a breadth of events than would otherwise not be possible. I don’t know of another place in the country where you could see Dizzee Rascal, Basketball, Lee Mack and a Welsh Male Voice Choir under one roof, let alone in the same week!”
As you will have already seen from the pages of this brochure, there is a fantastic variety of gigs already announced for 2011, including The Script, Alexandra Burke and The Specials, along with visits from Rhod Gilbert and Derren Brown. Of the line-up for 2011, Gavin is very proud, saying “We’ve already been able to announce some great shows for the year, but I’m really excited to say there’s much more to come! We have a good working relationship with the UK’s major Promoters, which helps us secure shows that wouldn’t otherwise come to Plymouth. In the past 12 months ‘supergroup’ Them Crooked Vultures, comedian Michael McIntyre and Peter Andre have all chosen to launch their UK tours here, which have gone on to visit far bigger venues in larger cities. They did this because they know they get a brilliant reaction from Plymouth audiences as well as a first class service from the venue. My aim is to capitalise on that further for our 20th birthday year, really making it a year to remember, and I hope you will be able to join us at such an exciting time.”

“they may not associate us with the corporate events that are making us famous across the UK”
26 | Spring 2011
Corporate business gives a significant contribution towards the Pavilions’ income per year; our venue is part of the Conference Plymouth group working to promote Plymouth as a conference destination, and in turn we have contributed over £2.2 million worth of value to the City this year through attendee spend alone,
not just at Plymouth Pavilions, but elsewhere in the City such as in hotels and restaurants, or through transport and retail; the total impact to the local economy is even higher once you factor in what is spent on actually making the events happen. The Baptists’ Assembly of 2,000 delegates and the annual Rotary 1150 District three day conference have come to Plymouth in the past year, amongst many others.
Kelly Harmer, Conference and Events Manager
The Raiders’ home court Plymouth Pavilions is the premier leisure and entertainment venue in the South West. With its state-of-the-art technical facilities it provides the ideal environment for the basketball enthusiast. The result being that Raiders play their games to packed houses. It is not just an exceptional sporting event, put it with the showmanship of the athletes, the music, the lights, the pyrotechnics, the cheerleaders and Foxy the mascot and all this adds up to great entertainment for all the family.

“I am truly delighted that we picked Plymouth Pavilions; it is an outstanding venue. The manner with which their team worked with us to deliver our three day event was professional and very positive. Thank you very much for your time and attention to detail that helped make the conference a success” Rotary 1150 District Governor of 2010:

We chat to Kelly Harmer, Conference and Events Manager about what the Events Team has been up to over the past year. Here’s what she had to say... When most people think of Plymouth Pavilions, they think of big name artists like Alexandra Burke, P!nk and Them Crooked Vultures as well as our fantastic Fun Pool and Ice Rink providing entertainment to visitors from across the South West, but they may not associate us with the corporate events that are making us famous across the UK.
