From the Head of School Dear Priory Community, Shout it from the mountaintops: 2014-2015 was a terrific year for fundraising at the Priory! I take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you for your support. Your contributions of time, talent and treasure exceeded our goals and expectations and our end-of-theyear Gala was the one of the highest grossing events in Priory history. It could not have happened without you, our loyal parents, alum parents, alumni and friends.

“We are a unique community of day and boarding students, monastic and lay staff living on campus serving a student body full of passion and the love of learning.”

There is not a faculty or staff member who has not said again and again how grateful and appreciative he or she is to work at the Priory. This dream of the Founding Benedictine Monks has flourished and prospered for fifty-eight years. The faculty and staff engage daily in creating learning opportunities for all our students so they “may serve a world in need of their gifts.” We are a unique community of day and boarding students, monastic and lay staff living on campus, serving a student body full of passion and the love of learning. Your dollars made things happen:

• A new Tinker Lab for Upper and Middle School students and a SportCourt for the Middle School.

• Professional development opportunities for faculty and staff that impact the classroom and learning.

• Personnel whose focus on student learning, diversity and sustainability make us a leader in the Bay Area.

• Financial aid to over 65 students so they can attain a Benedictine education.

We are very grateful for our Benedictine values that help shape thoughtful global citizens. Thank you for the part, large or small, you play in keeping our dream alive. Sincerely,

Tim Head of School

ANNUAL REPORT 2014 – 2015

From the Chair, Board of Trustees Dear Friends of the Priory, On behalf of the Priory Board of Trustees, it is my honor and privilege to report on the 2014-2015 school year at the Priory. In my last year on the Priory Board of Trustees I am excited to report on another highly successful financial and academic year which also saw the realization of the beautiful new classroom building and revitalization of Benedictine Square. Once again, the project came in on budget and on time and delivered a classroom building and gathering area that exceeded our expectations – complete with a striking statue of Saint Benedict. With the completion of the classroom building project, a new fundraising challenge has begun to keep the construction going. We are hoping for construction to begin the summer of 2016 for the much needed, and much anticipated, STREAM (Science Technology Robotics Engineering Arts and Math) building. Please help us make this a reality.

Jami Nachtsheim receives the St. Benedict medal, the highest award bestowed by the Priory, for her exemplary service and visionary leadership of the Board of Trustees.

This year we focused on continuing the master plan buildout, adjusting the internal processes recognizing we are now a mature institution with debt, and evolving the longer term governance of the Priory, in conjunction with Saint Anselm. A special committee was launched to address the challenge of a faculty housing shortage in Silicon Valley. We explored where Priory sits on the Catholic/Benedictine spectrum and reaffirmed our comfort in our deep Benedictine and Catholic roots where “all are welcome.” And, we agreed on updated roles and responsibilities with St. Anselm which includes succession planning and management in a world of fewer monks. With your continued support, the Priory continues to have a very bright future as a premier, independent college prep school in the Benedictine tradition, where students AND families are known and loved. Always We Begin Again,

Jami Nachtsheim Chair, Priory Board of Trustees

Annual Fund

Priory Annual Fund is a line item in our operating budget, bridging the gap between the cost of a Priory education and tuition revenue. The results of this community-wide, yearly campaign benefits every student every day. We consider the robust response by our parent community an endorsement of the quality of our instructional program. We are proud of Priory’s culture of philanthropy and grateful to the entire community for demonstrating it so generously this year.

Our community is small by design, providing the opportunity for every student to feel uniquely known and loved. Our giving community is small too. Every gift is important. Every gift is significant. Along with achieving our financial goal each year we also strive for participation by all constituencies of the school. 100% of our Faculty, Staff, Trustees, the Class of 2021 and the Class of 2020 made a gift to the 14-15 Annual Fund. We thank those parents whose dedicated volunteerism allowed us to achieve our goal. Working quietly behind the scenes to help us build community in support of every student through the Annual Fund.

Number of core principles recently articulated by Priory’s Faculty Innovation Committee to lead our students into the 21st century. We call them the four Cs and an R: Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, Critical Thinking, and Resilience. Contemporary companions to the Benedictine values and keys to a flexible new mindset, they form the center around which we are reimagining our instructional design.

642 Number of times middle school students over the past school year have been “Caught Being Good.” When a student is observed by an adult on campus doing something good—helping out a friend on crutches, or cleaning up without being asked—he or she is presented with a special card and entered in a weekly drawing. It’s not about the prizes, says Middle School Head, Caitha Ambler, but about the connection with the student, who feels seen and appreciated. “The power of the cards,” she says, “is in the moment itself.”

Number of varsity and junior varsity sports offered at Priory, with three-quarters of all high school students participating. [It’s an impressive number for a school our size and reflects our commitment to Benedictine hospitality, the belief that all are welcome.] That inclusive community spirit doesn’t stop us from fighting and winning, however. Over the past several years, we’ve nabbed CCS championships in Boys’ Basketball, Girls’ and Boys’ Cross Country, and Girls’ Volleyball, not to mention the fact that our 8-man football team went undefeated for two and a half years! For a brief time, Priory had the longest football winning streak in California!

40 Years since Father Pius, in an attempt to staff a quickly growing Priory, traveled around the country “begging for monks.” Visiting monasteries as far away as Louisiana and Oregon, he was informed by one abbot he could have “two schools but no monks.” Finally in New Hampshire, he struck gold. One of the young monks he “borrowed” from St. Anselm back in 1975 was none other than our own Father Martin.

Alumni Giving Dear Panther Alumni, Greetings from the Priory! As the Director of Alumni Relations, I am excited to connect and work with you to continue the legacy of your great alma mater, Woodside Priory School. The past year saw many engaging events and an alumni fundraising challenge that exceeded our expectations. We had our first annual Beer Garden Party in the Priory organic garden where Hovey Clark, Director of Sustainability, impressed attending alumni with a tour of his closedloop aquaponics system and teacher Rick Riebhoff became popular with his special Priory Black Session IPA pony keg. We can’t wait to have you all here for the next Beer Garden Party! Another first was our Alumni 10 Day Challenge, where 100 Priory alumni came forward and donated $100 each within 10 days. Together we surpassed our goal of $10,000, raising over $18,000! All funds went to support Priory scholarships. Overall alumni giving last year totaled approximately $150,000 and came in many forms: through Reunion class gifts, the Alumni Scholarship Fund, the Capital Campaign, the Annual Fund and of course the ever-popular Father Scholarship Funds. Every gift is meaningful and makes an impact at Priory, as well as reflecting the strength of our school community, past and present. We are incredibly grateful for your support. Thank you, and I look forward to another year. Warm regards,

Erin Irber Associate Director of Development, Alumni Relations

Original weight, in pounds, of Napoleon, Priory’s team robot last year. The Barn 2 Robotics team spent four weeks designing and building only to realize, two weeks before the FIRST competition, that Napoleon was 40 pounds overweight. That didn’t stop our intrepid innovators, however. They got Napoleon down to fighting weight in time and went on to win the 2015 Creativity Award at the Silicon Valley Regionals.

Parent Association Dear Priory Community, It has been a pleasure serving as co-presidents of the Priory Parent Association (PPA) this past year. We value the opportunity to continue to listen, to foster genuine, caring, and inquisitive collaboration between parents, teachers, staff and students, and to honor the Priory Way and Benedictine values that make our school so unique. Priory parents are engaged, caring, and committed to our school community, and we’re so grateful for your input, hard work, support and creativity! Here are just a few ways your efforts have contributed to Priory this past year:

• Homecoming Festivities afternoon. With input from students, the former family picnic evolved into an even more popular event where everyone can grab a hotdog, enjoy some ice cream and cheer on the Priory football team.

• Speaker Presentations on Parenting. The PPA’s Parent Resource Network planned presentations from a local parenting expert and a workshop series on mindful parenting of teens by a team of SF psychologists, with more to come.

• Core support committee for sustainability. In collaboration with the faculty Sustainability Coordinator, Hovey Clark, parent volunteers are rolling up their sleeves in the school’s garden and assisting with green projects on campus and in the classroom.

• The Priory Gala. Another hard-working team brought an elegant and profitable evening to build community and support the many programs and teachers at our school.

• All-Volunteer Thank-You Brunch. With the support of the school’s Development Team, we streamlined many thankyou events into one fantastic April celebration for our busy volunteers.

• Evening PPA meetings. By popular request, we plan to hold additional gatherings in the evening, allowing even more parents to participate and benefit from interacting with Priory parents, staff and outside experts, too. These are just a few of the contributions made possible by Priory parents over the past year, so please keep your comments, ideas, and offers for resources coming! We look forward with you to another exciting year. Gratefully,

Scott and Pamela Weiss Co-presidents, Priory Parents Association 2014-2016 20

Gala

Of all the PPA activities of the year, the annual auction certainly amasses the widest range of participation across the entire Priory community. This year, for the first time, Priory’s 34th auction took place five miles from campus at the beautiful Sharon Heights Country Club. The Black & White Gala was gracefully chaired by Annalisa King, who guided a gifted and hard-working team of enthusiastic volunteers assisted by Priory’s Gala Coordinator, Nancy Talbott. It was a spectacular evening. Three hundred and seventy guests enjoyed cocktails and appetizers on the balcony overlooking the golf course while engaging in the Silent Auction. A sumptuous dinner was served in the elegant ballroom designed in black and white by Judy Zafran. Judi Jaeger curated an outstanding offering of wines for the Silent Auction, while Kari Rust synchronized a stupendous selection of parties – from Yoga by the Pool to Martinis and Moonlight. Carolyn Putney’s creative compilation of cakes received a rousing response as did Donna Chandra’s coordination of Priory Spirit events and activities. This annual event is an incredible coming together of the entire Priory community! Enthusiastic parent volunteers, the Faculty and Staff, and our beloved monks worked persistently to create a most enjoyable and financially successful event raising over $570,000 in support of the school. With gratitude to them and to our generous donors, this year’s Black & White Gala came off with flying colors!

75 Number of handmade crosses created by Father Martin from the wood of Priory’s original monastery. Last year, when the faculty office building—once the early monastery—was torn down to make way for brand-new classrooms, Father Martin salvaged the boards, then created a mold to reproduce the corpus based on a 12th century example found in Hungary and exhibited in the Kereszteny museum there. These living reminders of Priory history now adorn every classroom—even the new ones!

>1,000,000 Number of kilowatt hours in energy generated, since their inception, by the five solar arrays spread across campus. 0 The number of times during the past year that the school day was interrupted by bells or buzzers. That absence of passing bells and our spacious block schedule are just two of the ways we’ve sought to lessen student stress and to cultivate a learning atmosphere full of peace and purpose, in keeping with our commitment to Benedictine balance.

22,000 Estimated hours of community service performed by students last year. Whether helping out in San Francisco’s Tenderloin during January’s Service Week—juniors chipped in at St. Anthony’s dining hall, the Boys’ and Girls’ Club, and Glide Memorial Church, among others—or participating in service projects through sports teams, classes or clubs, Priory students found many ways to connect with communities outside their own, and learned to do so with the attitude of mutual respect, listening, and reflection that St. Benedict advocated so many years ago.

781 Weight, in pounds, of the St. Benedict statue now at the center of Schilling Square. Modeled after the one at St. Anselm in New Hampshire, the statue was refashioned by Father Martin to reflect a younger St. Benedict, one closer in age to our students. The St. Benedict statue was donated by Friends of the Chapel.

41 Times last year the entire Priory community gathered for Chapel. This weekly pause, featuring song, prayer, and reflection, is consistently rated as a favorite by outgoing seniors, especially for “chapel talks,” those memorable moments when a student, teacher, or staff member stands up in front of the community and speaks from the heart about something that matters to them.

Special Campaign Report Dear Priory Community, What a difference a year makes! This fall we began our academic year with our first new classrooms in over 40 years. The finished result surpassed all expectations. This new learning environment, consisting of ten classrooms and a faculty lounge surrounded by a large communal plaza, was carefully designed to create just the right amount of flexible space, natural light, outstanding broadband, and plenty of room for learning. Our goal was to make a better environment for our students and teachers, one where they can prosper in a dynamic educational paradigm. These classrooms were also designed with the highest standards of sustainability, and over time will have a near zero or negative carbon footprint. We are grateful for the Campaign Leadership Team who successfully led the fundraising efforts behind these improvements. This team has been hard at work for over three years raising the funds for the first two phases of our Building Ingenuity: Priory Campaign. The first phase was all the classroom renovations completed over the summer of 2013. The second was the Benedictine Classrooms completed this summer. These efforts were led by our chair Mike Calbert and his co-chairs Michelle Galloway and Mike Carusi. We are grateful for their countless hours planning and meeting with families to discuss each and every contribution. It is only because of their hard work and tireless dedication that we achieved our fundraising goals on time for this part of the campaign. While our Campaign Leadership Team was meeting with families, we also had another dedicated volunteer monitor how these gifts were invested. David Brett, Priory trustee and parent, thoroughly and consistently managed all aspects of the construction. David serves as the chair of the Building and Grounds Committee and met every week with our architects and builders to review all plans and progress. The result? This project was completed under budget. David was determined to make sure all donations were wisely and prudently spent and he succeeded. Always we begin again…now we are pivoting our focus towards the crown jewel of our capital campaignour new STREAM Center (Science Technology Robotics Engineering Art and Math). For this third phase of this campaign we are led by Eric Harrison, parent of two Priory students. Our hope is to begin construction by the summer of 2016 and have it completed in time for our 60th Anniversary, fall of 2017. The impact of a new STREAM Center on pedagogy is clearly significant and will be immediate. Our goal is to have enough labs to service the growing need and interest of all our students in science, robotics and the fine arts. Neither tuition nor annual fund gifts helped fund these improvements. These were separate giving opportunities and we are so very grateful for all the families who made Priory a philanthropic priority. Thank you! What are we building? We are Building Ingenuity. Sincerely,

Siobhán Lawlor Director of Development

“My family and I witnessed first-hand the positive impact the Performing Arts Center had on programming as a direct result of Priory’s first capital campaign which focused predominately on the performing arts. So when asked to Co-Chair the second capital campaign to invest in modern, collaborative educational spaces, I was excited to get involved. I thought these upgrades were a critical and necessary next step for the school. The work done by the Co-Chairs and the capital campaign committee was incredible and the generosity of the Priory community to the capital campaign has been overwhelming. It has been a real honor to be involved in the Priory’s capital campaign.”

Supporting the Priory Giving to Woodside Priory School For 58 years, Woodside Priory School has been graced by the presence of our Benedictine Monks, driven by the ambitions of talented teachers and administrators and backed by the generous support of the school’s donors. The Priory enjoys a robust culture of philanthropy sustained by your faithful commitment. We are grateful.

Save the Date March 19, 2016 Priory’s Gala returns to Sharon Heights Country Club in 2016. Mark your calendars for this community-wide celebration of the school. If you are interested in donating a trip or an item, underwriting or advertising, please contact Nancy Talbott, Gala Coordinator at: gala@priorypanther.com

Ways to Give CASH Gifts to Priory may be made by cash, check, credit card or appreciated stock. Make a donation online at: www.prioryca.org/support/give STOCKS OR SECURITIES A gift of appreciated stock offers a two-fold tax saving: avoiding capital gains tax on the increase in value of the stock and providing an income tax deduction for the full market value of the stock at the time of the gift. MATCHING CORPORATE GIFTS Many companies offer employees a matching gift benefit that could double the contribution to Priory. Check with your Human Resource Department to see if your employer matches charitable gifts. GIFTS-IN-KIND Items may be donated to Priory, such as computers, software, professional services, and athletic equipment, which provide operational savings and meet the specific needs of Priory. The school does not assign a dollar value to gifts-in-kind. PLANNED GIFTS Donors may consider giving bequests through wills or trusts, life insurance, retirement plan donations and life income gifts. Estate planning can be a way to reduce or avoid estate and inheritance taxes. We encourage you to speak with your financial planner when considering any type of planned gift. We honor those individuals who have made a lasting commitment to our school by including charitable gifts to the Priory in their estate. Those who remember the Priory through a will, trust, designation or other planned gift are invited to join our St. Benedict Society, which recognizes this special form of lasting philanthropy.
