Eco Design/Living Wall When a Living Wall was first considered at Priory, the idea was to have an outside firm create and install it. Then the price quotes came in shockingly high, and teacher Hovey Clark had a crazy idea. Why not have his Eco Design class try it? It was just the kind of hands-on STREAM project the course was made for, a perfect fit for the new Learning Competencies, and his class could get it done at a fraction of the cost.

But designing and installing a vertical hanging garden turned out to be a much bigger challenge than anyone expected. “We were essentially recreating a tree,” says Mr. Clark. “And moving water uphill is exceedingly difficult for humans.” He and his students had to take into consideration water pressure and volume, soil and plant types, the weight of wet and dry soil, structural issues, aesthetics, and even construction and building codes. “There was no top-down learning happening in this classroom,” Clark says. “Nobody was an expert. We were all learning at the same time.” Sometimes he feared he’d taken on too much. “I thought we were going to need professionals to come in and finish it,” he says. But a turning point came one day during the installation phase. His students were up on the scaffolding and they asked him to please stop calling up instructions from below. “I’m embarrassed to say I still don’t know what they were doing, or why it was better than what I was suggesting,” Mr. Clark admits. “But I had to say, ‘OK, I trust you guys.’ And you know what? It worked. They were totally right.” That Living Wall now stands—or better said, hangs—as a powerful symbol of Priory’s commitment to sustainability. It’s also proven to be a resounding design success. Fertilized with water from last year’s aquaponics project and irrigated automatically, the wall requires almost no maintenance and the plants are thriving. Mr. Clark couldn’t be prouder of his students and what they created. “It’s a beautiful reminder,” he says, “Of our connection to the earth and to stewardship.”

From the Head of School Dear Priory Community, As we look back on the 2015-16 school year at Priory, we have so much to be grateful for! Priory’s campus is more beautiful than ever, our teachers and students are deeply engaged and moving with excitement into the future, and our beloved monks continue to guide us, keeping us connected to the all-important Benedictine values at the root of all we do. The seeds of those values were first planted in our California soil back in 1956, when Father Egon was sent across the country by his fellow Hungarian monks to found a school. He made it to the West Coast, bought a small ranch, and opened a school for nine boys. So began Priory – Silicon Valley’s first start-up! Years passed, and the tech industry sprouted up around us. We grew bigger and more bustling, adding girls and boarding students with a keen eye toward the future. Yet amid all that change, we continue to be guided by the same Benedictine tradition that Father Egon brought with him all those years ago. It’s that very rootedness, that deep sense of sustainability, that makes this place so special. And it’s your support that has allowed us to bring that timeless vision so powerfully into the 21st century. So thank you, Priory parents, alumni, alumni parents, grandparents and friends for sharing our values and believing in our mission. Thank you for continuing the culture of philanthropy that has allowed us to thrive and grow. Thank you for giving so freely of your time and treasure to help us do what we do best. As a result, there’s never been a better time to be at Priory! In gratitude,

Tim Molak Head of School

ANNUAL REPORT 2015 – 2016

From the Chair, Board of Trustees Dear Friends of the Priory, On behalf of the Priory Board of Trustees, it is my honor and privilege to report on the 2015-2016 school year at Priory. In addition to another successful financial and academic year, the Priory campus is once again in the process of being transformed as construction begins on the eagerly anticipated STREAM building (Science Technology Robotics Engineering Arts and Math) and a new Track and Field. This year we focused on making sure every financial and design detail was in place to simultaneously execute these two large construction projects. A huge thank you to the Building Ingenuity Campaign Committee, the Finance Committee, and the Buildings and Grounds Committee for working together to make these dreams become a reality. Fundraising continues to finish out the $25 million capital campaign which will ultimately transform the Priory campus over 5 years with complete classroom renovations, the Benedictine classroom building, the STREAM building and the Track and Field. Please help us complete this vision. Work continues on the master plan build-out, next concentrating on the unique opportunity we have to add more on-campus housing to ease the strain of affordable housing in Silicon Valley for Priory’s own faculty and staff. A special committee has been working to understand the complex architectural and financial challenges of such an important undertaking. Thoughtful consideration was given over the course of the year to the concept of “balance” and how it fits into Priory’s Benedictine culture. This work culminated in adding the idea to our Mission Statement as well as receiving a prestigious E.E. Ford Grant for further work in this area of interest in support of our students. We continue to cherish and enhance relationships with our own monks and the monastic community at St. Anselm, working with them on succession planning and governance as we face a future with fewer monks. Leading into our 60th year, Priory has a bright future and much to be thankful for. Our school is in good hands with talented faculty, staff, monks, trustees and parents who all give generously of their time, talent and treasure as we “assist all students in creating meaningful and balanced lives, developing as lifelong learners and stewards, and productively serving a world in need of their gifts.” Always We Begin Again,

Eileen DiGiorgio Chair, Priory Board of Trustees

The new Sport Court, opened in the fall of 2015, with its three basketball hoops and volleyball area, may seem like a small addition to Upper Campus. But its impact, says Middle School Head Caitha Ambler, has been huge. With room for Ping-Pong tables, a Four Square court, and a Gaga Ball pit, Church Square has become a place where students from all three grades mix freely and play together in a way they didn’t before. “We’ve created an environment where kids are allowed the independence to manage their own activities,” says Ms. Ambler. “It’s feeling very positive.”

New Trophy Room It was a good problem to have, admits Athletic Director Mark Stogner: too many trophies. The old glass case in the gym lobby was crammed with Priory’s many CCS championship and runner-up wins, and something needed to be done. So a wall was knocked out, the old trophy case removed, and a new trophy room created. Now there’s plenty of room to showcase Priory’s athletic triumphs. “In a program that doesn’t stress winning as much as participation and sportsmanship,” Mr. Stogner says, “It’s great to be able to say we’re still competitive. The success of our teams really shows.”

Athletics

2015-16 was a watershed year for Priory sports. Our always-impressive level of participation was at an all-time high, with 100% of middle schoolers and over 75% of all high schoolers on a team. What’s more, boys’ and girls’ high school basketball made historic runs, with the boys winning the CCS championship for the second year in a row and the girls rising from obscurity — having only fielded a JV team the year before — to fight all the way to the CCS championship game. Both home and away, stands were packed with cheering students and families, showcasing that special Priory community spirit. Go Panthers!

The Learning Competencies Educators everywhere have been asking the same question: “How do we prepare students for the ever-changing demands of the 21st century?” At Priory, we’re already putting our answer into practice. The Learning Competencies are a set of five crucial skills now being woven through every classroom, every professional development session, and every teacher evaluation. Thoughtfully chosen by our brilliant Professional Development team and pairing beautifully with the Benedictine values, these five key strengths of creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, communication, and resilience will define a Priory education for years to come and leave our students uniquely prepared to meet a rapidly shifting future.

New Counseling Center Prior to the 2015-16 school year, if you needed help from someone in the Priory counseling department, first you had to face a challenge: finding them. “We were spread out all over campus,” says Sandy Martignetti. “It was confusing for kids, and confusing for families.” Then an angel appeared in the form of the Kruep family, whose generous donation brought the Academic Resource Center and the entire counseling department together under one newly remodeled roof. That bright, cheerful space, located behind the Student Center, now hosts counselors’ offices, a conference room, a college counseling lounge, and even air conditioning and a brand-new restroom! “The kids love it,” says Ms. Martignetti. “They feel like it’s their place.” They even know where to find it.

Robotics The Priory Robotics team may be small, but its accomplishments are anything but. Whereas some schools boast a hundred team members and rely on outside fabrication, Priory’s team includes only a dozen or so students, and they do all the design, manufacturing, and fabrication themselves. Last year’s captain Kelsey Gosling led her crew through a grueling season of late nights and weekends as they prepared their creation, Castle Crasher, to compete at the FIRST Silicon Valley and Central Valley regionals, where they won more than they lost and earned a trophy along the way. “The process really mimics the start-up atmosphere,” says faculty advisor Richard Paige. “And it plays well into the Learning Competencies. Resilience is really big, as are cooperation, collaboration, and communication. It’s an excellent opportunity to learn about life in the real world.”

Q: What do you get when you combine students from Nigeria, Hungary, Thailand, China, Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Spain, Russia, Singapore, Austria, Germany, and various parts of the U.S.?

A: You get the boarding program last year, with as diverse and vibrant a group of young people as the school has ever seen. “We had students who really dove into life here at Priory,” says Michelle Taffe, Dean of Residential Life. “They were fun, engaged, into music and sports, and they got really involved with the larger community.” The result? Cross-cultural friendships that extend beyond the boarding program and even beyond the Priory years.

Enhanced CS Curriculum It seemed only appropriate that we at Priory—“Silicon Valley’s first start-up,” as Mr. Molak likes to say—have a Computer Science department as robust and dynamic as the atmosphere around us, and one that could meet the needs of our evermore tech-savvy students. That’s why we’ve added faculty and revamped the curriculum from top to bottom. The new yearlong Introduction to Computer Science opened up hands-on programming to more students than ever, a full half of them girls, and a college-level class called Data Structures gave advanced students the chance to solve a complex programming problem from start to finish. Together with AP Computer Science, these three courses offer a streamlined sequence for students wanting to go into computer science and engineering. There’s even Independent Study, for those who just can’t get enough.

Performing Arts/Theater If you know drama teacher John Sugden, you know he likes a challenge. The Drowsy Chaperone, a combination parody and classic musical, presented quite a few of those. Students had to play actors from the Twenties who were themselves playing characters. In addition to tap dancing, roller-skating on stage, and performing in big choreographed numbers, cast members were called on to give bold, uncensored performances that referenced vaudeville, silent film, and the matinee idols of the Twenties and Thirties. As if that weren’t enough, a giant plane had to land on stage and Priory student musicians would be providing the score from the orchestra pit. All of it went swimmingly, but more importantly, says Mr. Sugden, the cast, crew, and musicians showed an incredible amount of heart. “It’s like a duck on the water,” Sugden says. “It looks so effortless because everyone is paddling with their feet so incredibly hard.”

CAD Classes A computer class that involves making designer chocolate? An art class that teaches Design Thinking? Priory’s CAD or Computer Assisted Design classes defy easy categorization, but the students flocking to them don’t seem to mind. An exciting collaboration between the Computer Science and Fine Arts departments that’s even caught the attention of other school districts, CAD 1 and 2 allow students to dream up and create everything from original tech gadgets to edible gummies to metalwork using 3-D printing, moldmaking, and hands-on fabrication. Creators Christine Hemiup and Reed Sullivan designed the class to incorporate industrial-grade software and mimic real design firm experience, and they’ve been thrilled with the results. “Students come back and tell us, ‘I’m getting a job CAD-ing for this company or that company,’ or ‘I got a summer internship,’” says Ms. Hemiup. “One student texted me to say he’s now selling his stuff online. It’s just awesome.”

Music Theory/Data Structures Can computers replace composers? That question fueled an unlikely collaboration between students in two very different Priory classes: Music Theory and Data Structures. The task for the music students: to identify the essentials of Classical Era melodies (think Mozart and Haydn), input hundreds of those melodies into Noteflight software, and give the resulting MIDI files to their peers in Computer Science. The CS students then created a program to mine that data for musical patterns, eventually producing their own computer-generated “Classical Era” melody. Finally, volunteer audiences listened to that melody and two others— one written by the music students, and one by an actual Classical composer—and tried to guess which was which. It was all good news: computers won’t be putting composers out of business any time soon, and Priory students collaborated and communicated successfully across vastly different disciplines and even different “languages,” a true real-world challenge.

Parent Association Dear Priory Community, It has been our privilege to serve as co-presidents of the Priory Parent Association for the last two years! During that time, we have marveled at the power of the Priory community and at the ripple effects a Priory education can create. Recently, at a dinner gathering in London, we were randomly seated next to a gentleman from the Philippines with kind eyes and a gentle manner. We soon found out he attended the Priory in the days when it was still an all-boys school. He carries memories of the Priory with him, and he most definitely remembers Father Martin (who could not?!). It’s clear that for students here, the Priory never leaves them. As we write this today, the new track and field is racing to its finish, and the STREAM building is rising from the earthy dust of the previous structures that stood upon its ground for so many years. Sometimes as a current parent, it’s hard to connect the benefits of being involved with the school at a personal level to the impact you are having on its future. But for each of us, every gift we make to the Priory of time, talent and treasure is a building block. For those of us currently in the midst of raising a Priory student, we are so fortunate to see our efforts – and the commitment of families before us – coming to fruition, one building block at a time, on our dynamic campus. It’s worth mentioning too that so much is being transformed at the Priory that isn’t bricks and mortar. Your new PPA leaders, Kathy Fitzgerald and Kari Rust, are playing a vital role in the progression of Priory’s parent community, working closely with the administration to present enhanced abilities to communicate, track participation and make it easier than ever to be a part of Priory as a cherished parent volunteer. (If you haven’t signed on to our new PPA website yet this year, please do!) We congratulate them on all the many ways they are creating community through leveraging our new technology and new relationships with teachers and staff. We are in awe! Our family started here in middle school and now all three children are high-schoolers. Chaos? Sometimes. And also calm. We know they are all going to make their way into this world – the one in need of their gifts. Maybe they’ll end up in the far corners of the globe like the alumnus we met, or maybe they’ll find their calling closer to home. But we know wherever they venture, they will take the Priory experience with them. So as one of our own heads out into the world this coming year, our youngest is just beginning her Upper School experience. And you can bet, none of them will ever forget Father Martin either! Sincerely,

Scott and Pamela Weiss Co-presidents, Priory Parent Association 2014-2016

Gala

What a night for Priory! The most successful annual auction ever was also a nod to local history. Beginning in 1963, The Emerald Ball at the Sharon Heights Country Club was THE major social and fundraising occasion of the year and it continued until the 1980’s. Gala Chair Carolyn Putney chose to honor Priory’s legacy by reinstituting The Emerald Ball as the theme for Priory’s 35th annual Gala! A dedicated team of committed parent volunteers worked tirelessly with Carolyn to make her vision a reality. Sandra Fairon and her team filled the ballroom with bowls full of roses, shimmering satin linens, and walls awash in green lights. Each and every guest was gifted with an emerald ring at his or her place setting! An exceptional array of wines, expertly curated once again by Judi Jaeger, kept guests hovering over their bids. Amazing items dazzled the Silent Auction tables, including creations by Reed Easley-Sullivan and her metalsmithing students, Shawn Matson and his glass students, and skateboard designed and built by Rick Riebhoff and his students. The Live Auction was a rousing competition for phenomenal experiences like dinner with renowned racecar driver Mario Andretti, VIP tickets to see the Jimmy Fallon Show in New York City, and an Irish vacation of a lifetime with stays in a 600-year-old castle and a 300-year-old Dublin mansion! Best of all, the evening ended with a record $743,262 raised in support of Priory. Thanks to countless enthusiastic parent volunteers, Priory faculty and staff, our beloved monks, and all who donated and bid so generously, the Emerald Ball was the brightest of nights for Priory!

Adult Formation Retreats One side effect of having a child at Priory, for many parents, is a deepening curiosity about the Benedictine way of life. That’s why, four years ago, Father Martin and Director of Campus Ministry Molly Buccola created special retreat days where Priory parents could come together to learn, reflect, recharge, and find that all-important balance and community. Last year the program was bigger than ever, with alumni parents and trustees among the participants for the first time and six full retreat days offered, including a day of yoga and meditation with teacher Alex Thayer. Molly and Father Martin enjoy helping parents find time for themselves and each other, and helping them understand their kids and the school a little better. Buccola says, “I walk away feeling so fulfilled. I so appreciate hearing parents’ stories, their struggles but also their hopes, and how the Benedictine life and perspective offers some type of sanctuary within that. It’s beautiful.”

Ways to Give

Save the Date April 1, 2017 Priory’s Gala returns to Sharon Heights Country Club in 2017, graciously chaired by parents Christy Occhipinti and Jennifer Youstra. Mark your calendars for this community-wide celebration of the school. If you are interested in donating a trip or an item, underwriting or advertising, please contact Donna Chandra, Gala Coordinator via email: dchandra@prioryca.org.

CASH Gifts to Priory may be made by cash, check, credit card or appreciated stock. Make a donation online at: https://prioryca.myschoolapp.com/ Page/Support/Give-to-Priory STOCKS OR SECURITIES A gift of appreciated stock offers a two-fold tax saving: avoiding capital gains tax on the increase in value of the stock and providing an income tax deduction for the full market value of the stock at the time of the gift. MATCHING CORPORATE GIFTS Many companies offer employees a matching gift benefit that could double the contribution to Priory. Check with your Human Resource Department to see if your employer matches charitable gifts or see the Matching Gifts directory on our website. GIFTS-IN-KIND Items may be donated to Priory, such as computers, software, professional services, and athletic equipment, which provide operational savings and meet the specific needs of Priory. The school does not assign a dollar value to gifts-in-kind. PLANNED GIFTS Donors may consider giving bequests through wills or trusts, life insurance, retirement plan donations and life income gifts. Estate planning can be a way to reduce or avoid estate and inheritance taxes. We encourage you to speak with your financial planner when considering any type of planned gift. We honor those individuals who have made a lasting commitment to our school by including charitable gifts to the Priory in their estate. Those who remember the Priory through a will, trust, designation or other planned gift are invited to join our St. Benedict Society, which recognizes this special form of lasting philanthropy. Please contact Al Zappelli, Senior Director for Strategic Initiatives at azappelli@prioryca.org or 650-851-6101 for more information. WOODSIDE PRIORY SCHOOL
