Realizing the Dream Sixty years after our original Benedictine visionary, Fr. Egon, stood on the hillside overlooking what is now the Priory campus, Head of School, Tim Molak, stands in the same footprint on the steps of our newly finished Garden Pavilion. What was once a blank slate, now encapsulates a thriving, state-of-the-art 6-12 campus full of innovation, balance, compassion, and forward-thinking community members. Our STREAM Center will open in early 2018, housing science, technology, robotics, engineering, art and math workshops and classrooms, bringing our founding monks’ vision to life in the 21st century.

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Priory Community, When Father Egon founded the Woodside Priory School, he brought with him to Portola Valley a vision based on a 1500-yearold tradition of Benedictine education. We continue to treasure that vision and tradition today. It is kept alive through the hard work of our monks, faculty and staff, and through the unwavering and loving support of our Priory community of parents, grandparents, alumni, and friends. That is our mission, which we strive to fulfil every day and we could not do it without your support. The 2016-2017 school year was a banner year! Our Annual Fund Campaign and Gala helped support our students in a variety of ways, including financial needs. It is that culture of philanthropy that helps make our community strong. This past year has also been one of growth on campus, as we continue adding to and updating our facilities. The remodeled pool, Garden Pavilion, and STREAM center (Science Technology Robotics Engineering Arts Math) are just the latest upgrades to our beautiful campus. We sent our class of 2017 Priory graduates and leaders out into the world and we welcome a new class of students for this Fall. It is that special sense of community that makes the Priory such a wonderful place to learn, grow as individuals, and share their experiences and thoughts with the world as men and women of integrity. Thank you to all our parents and grandparents, who have so generously given of your time and treasure to support this vision for the future, to our alumni near and far, who continue to contribute to your Priory family in tangible and intangible ways and to all the friends of Priory, who support our school, and who act as shining examples for our students through their many acts of hospitality and generosity. With humble gratitude and appreciation,

Tim Molak Head of School

ANNUAL REPORT 2016 – 2017

10/5/17 11:18 AM

FROM THE CHAIR, BOARD OF TRUSTEES Dear Friends of the Priory, On behalf of the entire Priory Board of Trustees, it is my honor and privilege to report on Priory’s 2016-2017 school year. Most importantly the year was wonderfully successful, both academically and financially. While major planned construction of the new STREAM building and the Track & Field took over the campus, our ambitious team pulled out all the stops and added a beautiful new pool, two field houses, and the Garden Pavilion to their already full plates! Over the past five years, the Priory campus has been truly transformed thanks to the donors, volunteers and staff who worked hard together on a vision that is now a wonderful reality. The Board’s major focus this year was financial. Having achieved 88% of the $26.1 million needed to close out the Building Ingenuity Capital Campaign, at the end of the school year time was spent looking at and planning for the future of Priory, both near and far. Many talented people continue to work diligently on a plan to add more affordable housing to our campus, hoping to ease the strain of housing costs and commute times for our faculty and staff. It takes time to get a complex project like this right and it remains a very high priority. We continue to celebrate and cherish Priory’s monastic community as well as strengthen relationships with Abbot Mark, the monks, and St. Anselm College in New Hampshire. This work on governance and succession planning will keep the Benedictine spirit strong at Priory for many years to come. As we approach our 60th year, the Priory continues to excel as a Catholic Benedictine, independent college preparatory school in Silicon Valley. We are very proud of our students and alumni and are extremely thankful for a strong community of talented faculty and staff, monks, trustees, friends and parents who give generously of their time, talent and treasure. The legacy we are leaving today indeed paints a very bright picture for Priory’s future.

Always we begin again,

Eileen DiGiorgio Chair, Priory Board of Trustees

Giving to the Annual Fund is a school-wide effort and affords you the rare opportunity to invest in the students of Woodside Priory. When you make a fully tax deductible gift to the Annual Fund, your contribution is guaranteed to produce an exponentially positive return over a lifetime. As with most independent schools, Priory relies on generous significant and unrestricted Annual Fund contributions from trustees, parents, grandparents, parents of alumni, alumni, faculty and staff, corporations, foundations, and friends to elevate our incredible school from adequate to inspirational. The Annual Fund established a new record, raising $1,767,742 over the past fiscal year of July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017. Thank you so much for your support of our vibrant Priory community! Because we have such strong involvement, we are able to meet our ambitious goals year after year and envision a sustainable future over the next 60 years!

ANNUAL FUND FOUNDERS CLUB MEMBERS 2016-2017 The bedrock of the Annual Fund is our Founders Club. During the 2016-2017 school year, Founders Club member gifts made up more than 44% of total annual giving, with gifts ranging from $10,000 to $50,000. The growth of Founders Club membership has made an enormous impact on the school, and we look forward to continuing that momentum again this year. This club is comprised of a very special group of leaders, who believe in the values of a Benedictine education, and support the Priory mission that “every child has gifts to be discovered, nurtured and treasured. Please accept our sincerest thanks for your continued support at this leadership level.

GIRLS LACROSSE The new Trudelle Track and Field enabled us to offer girls lacrosse – never before offered at Priory! An astounding 37 girls came out for the team, including five girls who had prior experience. The team was able to use our newest athletic addition, which provided a wonderful playing field for practices and home games. Our lacrosse girls played a total of 10 games, gaining more and more confidence in their playing ability each week! We look forward to many more seasons and watching this budding program grow!

ROBOTICS In eager anticipation of moving into their new spaces within the STREAM Center on campus in early 2018, the Priory Robotics Barn2 Team has been enhancing their efforts to develop strong technical skills. Several members of our team have mastered complex welds and are accomplishing more each day and with each competition, even placing 3rd in the Central Valley Regional Competition this past school year! Our Priory Robotics team is completely hands on and student driven--thinking on their feet, building, coding, and troubleshooting on their own--all thanks to the stellar leadership they receive from their faculty moderators. It is fascinating knowing that this next generation is encouraged to think outside the box and challenge themselves to be independent engineers and inventors in their own right. We can’t wait to see what else our talented Robotics Team is able to accomplish one they are moved into their new state-of-theart facilities on campus!

DISCOURSE OF DINING This spring, students participated in a Discourse of Dining Course. They were asked to reflect on their food experiences, as they have nurtured relationships, formed bonds, confirmed culture, and invented new identities. The culmination of this class was each student bringing their food experience to life by crafting and executing a recipe and reflecting about their creation in a short memoir for a class cookbook compiled by faculty member, Kindra Briggs. The result? What may seem to be ingredients and directions on the surface, revealed the intimacies and memories of each student chef!

PANTHER PALS Each year, another extraordinary group of sixth graders begin their tenure at Priory. And each year, those students are paired with a senior as part of the Panther Pal Program. Not only benefiting from having an instant, older friend on campus, our seniors are delighted to serve as mentors for the year, passing on all of their Priory wisdom to our next generation of Panthers. From sitting together in Chapel, to enjoying lunch on Schilling Square together, these special activities throughout the year make for one of the sweetest aspects of student life at Priory!

SENIOR GIFT CAMPAIGN The Class of 2017 was the first to take part in Priory’s newest giving initiative, the Senior Gift Campaign. Each senior was encouraged to make a gift of $20.17, commemorating their graduation year. Focused on participation, this was a wonderful opportunity for seniors to demonstrate gratitude for the education and experiences Priory afforded them and, if they like, recognize a member of the faculty or staff. We extend our thanks to the 17 seniors who generously donated to this campaign and challenge the Class of 2018 to hit 100% this coming school year!

The 20th Annual Priory Golf Classic Priory’s Golf Classic has been a long-standing tradition, that over the past twenty years, has raised over $600,000 toward various school programs. Thanks to the dedicated leadership of Bryan Sinclair and M.J. Castelo and their enthusiastic committee comprised of Cindy Axe, Anarug Chandra, Meredith Rothrock, as well our very own Al Zappelli and Tim Molak, this year’s event netted over $65,000 in support of athletics, robotics, performing arts, and financial aid to support our student community. This year, our tournament was held on Monday, October 24th, 2016. While enjoying a change of venue at the Los Altos Hills Golf and Country Club, golfers participated in an 18-hole tournament with a live-auction to close out the day! In honor of Head of School Tim Molak’s 20 years of dedicated support of the Golf Classic, the Molak Cup was instituted, listing the names of each year’s winning team. Thank you to all our sponsors and participants—who’s ready to tee up for the 2017 Golf Classic?

GALA

One of our school’s most anticipated events, Priory’s 54th Annual Gala was held on Saturday, April 1, 2017 at Sharon Heights Country Club. The theme was “The Enchanted Forest” and the room was abrim with woodland creatures and mystical fairies galore coming together to celebrate the true spirit and generosity of the Priory community! Co-Chairs Jennifer Youstra and Christy Occhipinti led an amazing team with an impeccable grace and a positive spirit, all while working tirelessly, ensuring significant success. Building on last year’s most successful gala ever, we raised over $1 million to support our Priory community including an astounding $526,322 for the Fund-A-Future program, far surpassing our 2016 results. This was the largest amount ever raised at our Gala for an appeal of this nature. We accomplished all of this while bringing the entire community together for an unforgettable evening that has already been touted as “the best Priory gala ever.” Thank you all so much for your support of our institution! Mark your calendars for the 55th Annual Gala on Saturday, March 17, 2018!

SHEDDING A LIGHT ON CANCER Last year the Priory faculty collaborated with the Stanford University School of Medicine, Pediatric Palliative Care Program, to put on a concert and art show that raised awareness for the complex challenges faced by those fighting cancer. Shedding Light on Cancer embodied the kind of multi-disciplinary school and community collaborative event that most educational institutions dream of building, but extremely few achieve. The project began as an interview assignment in Mrs. Muir Parker’s biology class. sixty students interviewed patients, staff, and families about the challenges of fighting cancer. The goal was to gain empathy and bring the biological aspects of the disease to a more personal and immediate level. The students received guidance in their English classes as they developed interview questions and techniques. They then practiced their interviews on other Priory teachers. The evening of the concert, images of patients, staff, and family members who were interviewed were displayed on the screen and students read excerpts from these interviews. The Performing Arts Department’s Tina Paulson and Albee Mabeza put together a program for the concert, entitled Light in the Dark. They took the audience on a journey from darkness to light and explored the different facets of this disease: the long journey, spirituality, mortality, hope, gratitude, and individuality. They worked with the students on the songs and musical techniques as well as the meaning and overall impact of the performance. The music spanned time periods and genres and was deeply felt emotionally by all there. Reed Sullivan, of the Visual Arts Department, collaborated with the Pediatric Palliative Care Program at Stanford, and especially with

Dr. Sourkes, to bring together over 170 pieces of artwork created by children receiving palliative care at the hospital. These pieces of art were then hanged by Priory biology students in the Performing Arts Center and were on display for people to view as a part of the concert experience. The children had produced art that reflected their experiences and each one was unique. The visual impact of the artwork brought together the empathy and clinical elements that ran through the interviews and music of the evening. The concert itself was the culmination of many months of work and collaboration across disciplines and departments. Its success was a testament to the support we at Woodside Priory receive. The size of our campus makes collaborations like these possible and further enriches our community. We hope you were able to join us for this moving event and we thank you for being an instrumental part of what made this evening possible.

TRIP TO SPAIN This June, 25 choir students had the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to travel to Spain and represent Priory in beautiful performances across the country. The choir sang in joint concerts with the Cathedral Choir of Iglesia de la Virgen de la Luz, before travelling to Valencia, on the coast, where they gave a full concert performance at the Iglesia de San Nicolas. They then astounded in their last concert at the Iglesia de Santa Anna de Barcelona – a 12th century church with an outstanding acoustic. On their final day the group demonstrated their heart and talent again at the Benedictine Monastery, Basilica, and music school at Montserrat, tucked into the high mountains just outside of Barcelona. “We represented the best of ourselves in front of well over 600 people from around the world just before the afternoon prayer service - standing room only!” said Tiny Paulson, Music Director. Ticket sales from these events went directly to local church’s missions to help homeless ministry, and especially to feed homeless children and to provide them with transportation and support for school. Priory students were proud to be able to contribute to this cause through their musical gifts. These students returned home to their Priory community grateful for the opportunity they were afforded and optimistic at their potential to contribute to a greater world. 28

SUSTAINING DONORS

Classroom Today

The act of giving is meaningful and impactful. It is also deeply personal. Through the generosity of our sustaining donors who have given consecutively over the years, Priory has been able to meet changing needs and priorities as they arise. In addition to our various giving societies, we also provide special recognition for those who have supported Priory every year for five or more consecutive years. An annual gift, regardless of amount, is a valuable investment in our future.

SUSTAINING DONOR PROFILE: WHY WE GIVE Nancy and John Newman Our family has been blessed with our association with the Priory since our children Peter ‘99 and Kit ‘01, started 9th and 7th grades respectfully in 1995. I had started the previous January in a part time math position and after a few weeks knew that our decision to have Peter apply for 9th grade was the right one for our family. Given my experience and knowledge of other independent schools, I knew Priory had an environment of hospitality and warmth that we were looking for. The faculty was very student centered, treating each student as an individual and giving them the support and challenges that they needed to grow. Peter and Kit grew into adults whom we are very proud of and we know that the Priory had a lot to do with that growth. They learned the importance of being on a team, of working harder than you thought you could, of asking for help and of listening. They embraced the Benedictine values that have guided them and will continue to guide them throughout their lives. We will always be grateful for the school, the staff and especially the monks who provided this invaluable support and care for our most important accomplishment. WOODSIDE PRIORY SCHOOL

Your Philanthropy At Work…

Special Campaign Report Dear Priory Community, The launch of the 2015-2016 school year was marked by the major demolition of our well-used, multi-purpose art building. Construction began on an early August morning with Fr. Martin Mager, donning a hard hat, at the helm of a Caterpillar. Professionals then took over and by mid-morning the entire building was leveled. Originally purchased from the town of Palo Alto for $1.00, the tear down cleared the space for Phase 3 of our Building Ingenuity Campaign—construction of our new STREAM Center (Science, Technology, Robotics, Engineering, Art and Math). Before a plan for demolition was even conceived, Eric Harrison, chair of the Campaign Leadership Team was enthusiastically at work inspiring and encouraging support for the STREAM Dream. His valiant efforts, meeting with parents to articulately discuss the return on their philanthropic investment, resulted in a cadre of stakeholders committed to the future of the school and our students. With immense gratitude for Eric’s dedicated leadership, the STREAM Dream will become a reality for Priory’s 60th anniversary. Despite the over-abundant rainfall and blustering winds, construction continued throughout the winter, with thanks to alumni parent, trustee, and chair of the Building and Grounds Committee, Dave Brett. He, along with in-coming chair and current parent Dave Schinksi, met weekly with construction supervisors to oversee every aspect of the building process, while also carefully managing expenditures. Construction is scheduled for completion in November 2017, with an official move in slated for January 2018. Perched at the very top of campus, this two-story, 12,000 square foot structure will house three science labs, four art and computer science classrooms, a dedicated robotics workshop and conference room, as well as a covered outdoor maker’s court for testing robotics, glass blowing, metal casting and modeling designs. Our goal is to provide a state-of the art facility, with open space for interdisciplinary collaboration and the potential to transform the way in which students think, create and design today and for years into the future. Neither tuition nor Annual Fund gifts funded the STREAM Center. All capital improvements are funded by independent giving opportunities. We are remarkably grateful to all the families, current and past, who have contributed to this extraordinary enhancement to our beautiful campus. With 88% of our funding complete, we hope to close out the four-year Building Ingenuity Campaign this school year—ultimately bringing our founding monks’ vision into the future—but we need your help to do so. The Priory of today is built upon the philanthropic support of the families who have come before. We are forever grateful for the incredible culture of philanthropy that has been expanded and sustained by our campaign leadership donors who are Building Ingenuity. With gratitude and great appreciation,

Suzanne Couch

Special Campaign Report

“Anne and I have been thrilled with the extraordinary opportunities our daughter Kylie ‘16 and son Ryan ‘19 have experienced at Priory. The opening of the Benedictine Classrooms and Schilling Square brought the campus to an entirely new level. When asked to Chair the Campaign Leadership Team for Phase 3 of the Building Ingenuity Campaign—focused on the sciences, fine arts, and robotics—I accepted with enthusiasm. It has been a privilege to lead the effort to raise the necessary funds to build Priory’s new STREAM Center. This spectacular structure is a critical next step for advancing the school’s ability to provide enhanced hands-on learning opportunities for our children today as well as sustaining this excellence decades into the future. The response from our parent community has been impressive and together we will close out the Building Ingenuity Campaign by the end of the year—bringing the founding monks’ vision into the future.” Eric Harrison, Chair, Campaign Leadership Team

Building & Grounds Committee Chair

This year we welcomed a new chair of our Building and Grounds Committee, Dave Schinski (Devin ‘19 & Connor ‘22). A sub-committee of the Board of Trustees, Building and Grounds is responsible for oversight and management of campus building projects. From concept, to design and budgeting, to building completion, this committee is responsible for managing the building process, so Priory gets what it needs–on time and on budget. For the past four years, Building and Grounds has been chaired by alumni parent, and veteran of the construction business, Dave Brett (Michael ‘13 and Anna ‘15). With Dave’s experienced leadership, Priory renovated Church Square, and designed and built a new Sport Court in the Middle School. Upper School classrooms were renovated and the first new academic building in 40 years was designed and built around Schilling Square, on time and under budget. Dave Brett started off consulting, but the joy of the process, along with the enthusiasm and vision of Head of School, Tim Molak, drove him to see these projects through to completion. Part of his role as Chair has been to assist in finding a suitable replacement. We are in excellent hands with in-coming chair Dave Schinski (Devin ‘19 & Connor ‘22). Dave has served on the Building and Grounds Committee for the past year. As Director of Athletic Facilities, Capital Planning and Real Estate at Stanford University, he brings a wealth of knowledge. We are grateful for the expertise he brings, as we complete our Building Ingenuity Campaign and look forward to projects of the future.

The Visionaries

Inspired by Head of School, Tim Molak, and backed by the authority of the Board of Trustees, Jami Nachtsheim, Mike Calbert, Mike Carusi and Michelle Galloway successfully lead the campaign efforts behind fundraising for Phase I and Phase 2, as members of the Building Ingenuity Campaign Leadership Team. In 2013, before there were architectural drawings or building plans, these visionaries were dedicated to the creation of dynamic educational facilities–on par with our instructional program.

Leaving a Legacy: Carole Mauss After 17 years, an incredible member of our Priory family retired in June. Carole Mauss has been a fixture in the admissions department since joining the school in March 2000. Wander into her office and you would have always been greeted with a smile, a joke, and a word of encouragement. The students stopped by for the pretzels, but stayed for her warmth and compassion as she made it a point to get to know each of them and to listen to their news of the moment with the ear of her heart. Carole was eager to join a community whose goal was to help its students create meaningful and balanced lives, develop as lifelong learners and stewards, and productively serve a world in need of their gifts—and Priory was just that place. She quickly became an integral part of the admissions department and in her time here she has kept tabs on over one-thousand Priory students. Our Benedictine values were manifested as Carole spearheaded the ‘Open House’ and the ‘Shadow Program’ as a wonderful foray for prospective students and families into the Priory community. “As I retire” says Carole, “what hits me the hardest is that I won’t be here to watch the kids grow up”. Current students and alumni coming back to visit the Priory, were always welcome in Carole Mauss’ office, and her presence and warmth will be missed. Thank you Carole for all your passion and all the memories, and know that you are always welcome at Priory. 41

SUPPORTING THE PRIORY Giving to Woodside Priory School For 59 years, Woodside Priory School has been graced by the presence of our Benedictine monks, driven by the ambitions of talented teachers and administrators and backed by the generous support of the school’s donors. The Priory enjoys a robust culture of philanthropy sustained by your faithful commitment. We are grateful.

Ways to Give CASH Gifts to Priory may be made by cash, check, credit card or appreciated stock. Make a donation online at: www.prioryca.org/giveonline STOCKS OR SECURITIES A gift of appreciated stock offers a two-fold tax saving: avoiding capital gains tax on the increase in value of the stock and providing an income tax deduction for the full market value of the stock at the time of the gift. MATCHING CORPORATE GIFTS Many companies offer employees a matching gift benefit that could double the contribution to Priory. Check with your Human Resource Department to see if your employer matches charitable gifts or see the Matching Gift directory on our website. GIFTS-IN-KIND Items may be donated to Priory, such as computers, software, professional services, and athletic equipment, which provide operational savings and meet the specific needs of Priory. The school does not assign a dollar value to gifts-in-kind. PLANNED GIFTS Donors may consider giving bequests through wills or trusts, life insurance, retirement plan donations and life income gifts. Estate planning can be a way to reduce or avoid estate and inheritance taxes. We encourage you to speak with your financial planner when considering any type of planned gift. We honor those individuals who have made a lasting commitment to our school by including charitable gifts to the Priory in their estate. Those who remember the Priory through a will, trust, designation or other planned gift are invited to join our St. Benedict Society, which recognizes this special form of lasting philanthropy. Please contact Al Zappelli, Senior Director for Strategic Initiatives at azappelli@prioryca.org or 650851-6101 for more information.
