How far we’ve come!

Celebrate Priory! Celebrating you, our students, our donors, our 60th Anniversary, and the completion of the Building Ingenuity campaign.

Middle School Graduation

FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Priory Community, There’s never been more to celebrate at the Priory! With the wrap-up of the four-year-long Building Ingenuity campaign, the campus has been physically transformed. We owe immense gratitude to the 180 generous donors who helped modernize the campus through 45,000 square feet of new and transformed space, including the Joe Montero Aquatic Center, Trudelle Family Track, Benedictine classrooms, LaureL STREAM Center, Schilling Square, Church Square, and the Franklin Garden Pavilion. Priory’s vibrant culture of philanthropy is contagious. We were exceptionally pleased with annual giving results in the 2017-2018 year. More than $3 million was raised from members of our community through our Annual Fund, golf classic, and gala. We were especially touched when 70% of the Class of 2018 made their first gift to Priory ahead of graduation, unanimously directing their gifts toward the newly created Joseph B. Montero, Jr., Endowed Scholarship Fund. It is the culture of giving back that shows the strength of our community. We were thrilled to gather and celebrate with you this past year at two alumni reunions, regional alumni socials spanning both coasts, and our annual alumni parent event at the newly opened STREAM Center. In celebration of our 60th anniversary, all past gala and Priory Parent Association chairs were invited and recognized at our annual Volunteer Appreciation Brunch in April. If we missed you this year, we hope to see you back on campus or at an upcoming event in the coming year. While our appearance has changed, the core of Priory has not. We continue to treasure the vision of our founding monks as we provide a Benedictine education that prepares students “to serve a world in need of their gifts.” As we mourn the passing of our beloved Father Pius, we rejoice in the arrival of Father Matthew, our newest monk, who joined our community in August. Thank you to all members of the Priory community who have so generously given of your time, talent, and treasure this past year to support the Priory’s vision for the future. With humble gratitude and appreciation,

Tim Molak Head of School

ANNUAL REPORT 2017 – 2018

FROM THE CHAIR, BOARD OF TRUSTEES Dear Friends of the Priory, On behalf of the Priory Board of Trustees, it is my honor and privilege to report on the 2017-2018 school year at the Priory. The year was filled with celebrations and looking to the future. We marked the completion of the $26-million transformational Building Ingenuity campaign, celebrated Priory’s 60th anniversary, and rejoiced in our annual giving program exceeding $3 million. Looking back, the board and I are incredibly grateful for what you and the worldwide Priory community have given to help Priory reach these significant milestones. We are especially indebted to our Founders Club members, true philanthropic leaders in our community whose continuous support enables us to plan and project for the future. As Priory’s governing body, board members continue to focus on the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) self-study, identifying areas for improvement and celebration at Priory, and have completed preliminary plans for increasing faculty housing on campus. Another upcoming project will be to renovate and upgrade the dining hall. Our connection with St. Anselm Abbey remains strong and we are delighted by their decision to appoint Father Matthew to our school as the first new Priory monk in 22 years. It is an honor to serve Priory and witness the recent campus transformation. As a board, we are thrilled for the learning and growth opportunities that students will experience in these new campus spaces. As St. Benedict said as part of his rule, “Always We Begin Again.” It is in the Benedictine spirit that we celebrate these accomplishments and look ahead with joy to a bright and prosperous future at the Priory. Thank you for all you do to support Priory. Every gift is important. Every gift makes a difference. We are grateful to you.

Sincerely,

Mike Calbert Chair of the Priory Board of Trustees

As with most independent schools, Priory relies on generous gifts to meet our operating budget, and continue providing exceptional academic instruction and opportunities to our students. The Annual Fund is a necessary fund that all members of our community are asked to support. Gifts of every size are welcome and all are tax-deductible. In the 2017-2018 fiscal year celebrated in this annual report, the Annual Fund established a new record of funds raised, $2,045,050. We are so grateful to all who generously gave and made achieving this ambitious goal possible, thank you!

Annual Fund

FOUNDERS CLUB MEMBERS 2017-2018 The bedrock of the Annual Fund is our Founders Club. During the 2017-2018 year, Founders Club members made gifts ranging from $10,000-$50,000. Working together and giving generously, Founders Club members truly lead the Priory’s fundraising efforts. This club is comprised of a very special group of leaders, who believe in the values of a Benedictine education, and support the Priory mission that “every child has gifts to be discovered, nurtured, and treasured.” Please accept our sincerest thanks for your continued support at this leadership level.

KEYSHAWN’S 2ND PLACE FINISH AT CCS For the first time in more than 50 years, a Priory student qualified for the California State track and field championship! Keyshawn Ashford ‘18 completed the 100-meter competition at the Central Coast Section championships in 10.91 seconds. His second-place finish qualified him for the state championship, making the Priory community very proud! As the championship meet was scheduled for Keyshawn’s graduation day, he chose not to compete, and joined his classmates on campus, celebrating his graduation with his friends and family instead.

SCHOOL WALKOUT TO PROTEST GUN VIOLENCE In the wake of several school shootings across the United States in the 2017-2018 academic year, Priory students across all grades spoke up. Joining their peers across the country, participating students were supported in their choice to walk out of class at 10 a.m. on March 14 and stand united in peaceful protest in Schilling Square. Led by the Dedicated to Diversity club, students read aloud the names of the 17 individuals killed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School two months earlier, rang a bell after each name was read, and paused in reflection. The chamber singers performed, and a prayer was offered. Priory’s administration ensured that all students felt safe and respected whether they chose to participate in the walkout or not.

FACULTY AND STAFF APPRECIATION LUNCH As the academic year came to a close, Priory’s faculty and staff were treated by the parent community to the celebratory and generous Faculty and Staff Appreciation Lunch. A delicious spread of Indian, Japanese, and Vietnamese appetizers and entrees paired with fresh salads and innovative cocktails greeted faculty and staff in the dining hall on the final day of classes. Orchids and bamboo plants decorated the long tables as parent volunteers served lunch, cocktails, and desserts. Priory mom Clayre Fathers shared touching remarks about how Priory’s faculty and staff make a difference for her children. Faculty and staff celebrated the closing of the year with an awards presentation and a raffle of gift cards generously donated by parents.

GIRLS BASKETBALL’S ROAD TO STATE In just four short years, the Priory girls basketball program went from a JV team to competing in the state championship at the Golden One center in Sacramento. This success was due to committed players and Coach Buck Matthews. In the 2016-2017 year, the Panthers came close to qualifying for the NorCal championship, ultimately losing to Eastside Prep. Emerging even more determined in the 2017-2018 year, Priory achieved victory after victory during the regular season. While hosting the NorCal championship, the team came out on top against Bradshaw Christian, qualifying for the Division IV state championships. The girls were ecstatic and determined for the championship game against a school from Los Angeles, Rolling Hills Prep. With Priory fans cheering in the Golden One Center, the game had its highs and lows, with Rolling Hills Prep eventually achieving a narrow victory at 57-53. Priory celebrated this remarkable season nonetheless, with a state championship runner-up trophy now in the trophy room. The team hopes to compete victoriously in the 2018-2019 state championship.

WOODSIDE PRIORY SCHOOL

For more than 25 years, Priory’s campus has been the setting for the Peninsula Bridge middle school academy program. For five weeks, highly motivated middle school students from underserved communities across the Peninsula engage in academic instruction, mentorship, and field trips to gain additional skills in critical thinking and STEM. The vision of the Peninsula Bridge program is that all students, if given equal access and opportunity, can reach their full potential and graduate from high school and four-year colleges. Priory is proud to participate as a Peninsula Bridge campus and is overjoyed when middle school academy students choose to apply, and are accepted to Priory for high school. Four members of Priory’s class of 2018: Derek Abarca, Joseph Calderon, Elizabeth Duncan, and Alondra Manriquez, are Peninsula Bridge graduates.

ALUMNI PARENT SOCIAL Parents of alumni from the classes of 1980 to 2017 joined us at the newly opened LaureL STREAM Center for an evening of socializing with one another, Tim Molak, Fr. Martin, and Fr. Maurus, and learning about the school’s recent physical changes. Attendees dined on appetizers, Priory cookies, and Father Martin’s famous wood-fired homemade pizzas while touring the newly opened academic building. We love connecting with the parents of our alumni!

DONOR SPOTLIGHT ON EMRE SONMEZ ’13 The Priory alumni community is the school’s greatest legacy and as the network of over 2,000 graduates worldwide continues to grow, the need for leadership volunteers became apparent. During the 2017-18 school year, the Alumni Association launched the Class Captains program, which now boasts more than 30 graduates serving as key liaisons between Priory and their classmates. Newly appointed Class Captain Chair, Emre Sonmez ’13, has been vital in reconnecting classmates with the Alumni Association and rallying friends to return to campus for events, such as Reunion, in addition to generously supporting the Alumni Scholarship Fund. “Priory shaped every part of who I am,” he explained. “So many people helped me grow throughout my seven years at the school—from Mr. Marsheck guiding us through math problems after school every day to Coach Lai and his grueling cross-country practices. Continuing to be involved with the Priory is my way of paying all of this forward to the next generation of Priory students.” 19

Honoring a Champ An integral member of the community for more than four decades, Joe Montero’s ’76 untimely passing in December 2017 left Priory with a champ-sized hole. An admired teacher, coach and colleague, he was well-known for his boisterous personality and ability to connect with students, including always affectionately calling them “champ.” In honor of Montero, the Class of 2018 dedicated their Senior Gift to the Joseph B. Montero, Jr. Endowed Scholarship Fund in support of future generations receiving a Priory education. Recognizing their ability to philanthropically support something larger than themselves and honor their beloved Mr. Montero’s legacy, the seniors collectively donated nearly $1,300 by the conclusion of the three-week campaign. Posthumously, the recently renovated pool was also dedicated to the “Champ” and named the Joe Montero Aquatic Center in his honor.

GALA

In celebration of Priory’s 60th anniversary, the 1960s were transported to the Sharon Heights Golf & Country Club! An array of mirrored disco balls, white gogo boots, peace signs, bell bottoms, and tie-dye t-shirts made their appearance at Priory’s 2018 Club 60 gala. Co-chairs Jennifer Youstra, Christy Occhipinti, and Cynthia Mahood Levin led a fantastic team of dozens of parents working together to enjoy an evening out and raise crucial funds for Priory’s annual giving program. With total proceeds of $1,008,921 including $500,695 toward the Fund-a-Need program, we could not be prouder of how our community came together for Club 60! We hope to see you at the 2018-2019 Gala on March 30, 2019.

JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR With a cast of more than two dozen upper school student actors and 30+ orchestra members and tech specialists, Jesus Christ Superstar, the spring 2018 musical debuted in the Rothrock Performance Hall to 1,200 attendees over four performances. The rock musical depicts the last weeks of Jesus’s life told through the Gospel of John, complete with themes of revolution, struggle, betrayal, hope, doubt, and forgiveness. Performing Arts Department Head John Sugden remembers meeting with colleagues ahead of the school year to brainstorm the perfect show for the school’s 60th anniversary year. He hoped to honor Priory’s monks, and saw Jesus Christ Superstar as highlighting extraordinary human and theological themes of lifting up the downtrodden, standing against powerful forces, and believing in redemption and hope in the face of struggle.

Committing to Kindness Priory students know that it’s cool to be kind! Last fall, middle schoolers participated in a kindness fair. Focusing on the question, “How does understanding empathy and kindness create a positive school community?” students visited five stations dedicated to kindness. At the sweet selfie station, students wrote a positive message about inclusion and kindness and took a selfie holding it. At the large and beautiful Tree of Hope in Church Square, they tied a ribbon sharing a dream, hope, or wish to its branches and wrote a burden on a piece of paper and buried it near the tree. Together as a middle school community, students pledged to put kindness first.

Thank You for the Music You Bring, Mary! During the November 2017 60th anniversary and St. Benedict celebration, Mary Carroll was awarded the St. Benedict Medal, Priory’s highest honor, for her leadership of the Chapel music program. When she first arrived at the Priory 20 years ago, Mary remembers how different the environment was. Five monks led the Priory and the Chapel itself was smaller. Two decades later, Mary’s role has changed too. Now in her third year teaching 8th grade theology classes, several upper level theology electives, and supervising the robotics team and the new Unicef club, Mary now leads a Chapel choir for students, faculty, and staff. We are so grateful for Mary’s leadership and the beautiful music she brings to the Chapel.

SUSTAINING DONORS

The act of giving is meaningful and impactful. It is also deeply personal. Through the generosity of our sustaining donors who have given consecutively over the years, Priory has been able to meet changing needs and priorities as they arise. In addition to our giving societies, we also provide special recognition for those who have supported Priory every year for five or more consecutive years. Regardless of amount, an annual gift is a valuable investment in our future. Consecutive Years

SUSTAINING DONOR PROFILE: WHY WE GIVE By John Snyder ’75 Growing up in Portola Valley, I played baseball and soccer on the Priory’s fields. But the school itself was a mystery to me until the summer before eighth grade when I attended summer school at the Priory. As a struggling public school student, I quickly saw the school as a place where I could thrive and surprised my parents by asking if I could attend Priory for high school.

The Priory of today bears little resemblance to the Priory of the early 1970s. The school was the right college preparatory school for me and prepared me to attend Dartmouth. I am pleased to see how the Priory has responded to the educational needs of today’s students and our changing world. The school has truly grown and evolved over the decades. It’s hard to imagine today that the class of 1975 had only 14 members! Those of us who walked the trail earlier have a duty to leave the trail a little better for those who follow us. I firmly believe that each graduating class from the Priory has another student like me who found the right soil in which to grow and flourish. Like my own, their journey would be very different if it weren’t for the faculty, staff, and experience that Woodside Priory School offers. My wife Laurie and I are pleased to include the Priory in our annual giving plan in support of this wonderful, thriving institution. WOODSIDE PRIORY SCHOOL

Goats in the Garden It was a treat for Priory’s expansive garden, our sustainability efforts, and our students when 250+ goats arrived on our campus for a week in March. The goats grazed invasive thistle, grasses, and new pest plant species that were finding a home on our campus and taking valuable water from plants necessary to our ecosystem. The goat grazing was a new addition to our sustainability efforts and benefitted the garden immensely in the coming spring and summer. Destructive rodents could no longer hide in the lush vegetation, native grasses returned to take the place of the invasive plants, and helpful microorganisms took root in the soil again.

Campaign Close-Out

Campaign Close-Out After five years of fundraising, Priory’s Building Ingenuity campaign came to a close on June 1 in conjunction with the end of our 60th anniversary year. Adding 45,000 new or renovated space to our campus, we are forever grateful for how our community came together to make the Building Ingenuity campaign possible. In May and June, members of our community generously gave to secure the final 5% of funding necessary to complete the Building Ingenuity campaign. It is through this spirit of togetherness that makes our campus transformation all the more special and allows us to look forward to the next 60 years at Woodside Priory School! We are extremely grateful to the following donors who enabled us to bring Building Ingenuity to a triumphant finish this year.

The LaureL STREAM Center Wins an Award! We already knew that the new LaureL STREAM (Science, Technology, Robotics, Engineering, Art, and Math) Center was a spectacular addition to our campus, but its recognition as an Award of Merit winner at the 2018 Gold Nugget Award Competition in the spring of 2018 brought us even more pride. The annual awards presented by the Pacific Coast Builders Conference (PCBC), commonly called “the Academy Awards of the building industry” are dedicated to advancing the art, science, and business of housing. Judges spend three days choosing winners from a variety of new architectural projects with categories ranging from rehabilitation projects to commercial businesses, custom homes, and community spaces. Our LaureL STREAM Center was awarded the best educational project.

Leaving a Legacy: Ruth Benz “What a wonderful life I have experienced at Priory,” Ruth Benz wrote to faculty and staff in the spring of 2018 in a message announcing her retirement. “There is no other school like it, I am convinced.” Arriving at Priory in 2001, Ruth had been considering retirement before being asked to become Priory’s department chair for foreign language. Soon after, she became Priory’s new teacher coordinator, a position that she loved. Most of Priory’s current faculty was mentored by Ruth. She remembers serving on the Headmaster’s Council, lending her leadership to the Western Association of Schools and Colleges accreditation process, and providing advice and organization to faculty on graduation day, particularly related to academic robes. Ruth credits one of Priory’s strengths as the traditions that have been established and the mission of the school. “Teaching at a mission-based school is so meaningful because you do see the school’s mission played out everyday. This school is unique because even for a stranger coming on campus, it’s so evident that hospitality and community are so paramount.” Theology teacher Mary Carroll shares about Ruth, “the only thing greater than her sunny spirit is her heart. She has the capacity to empathize with anyone, from coworkers to middle schoolers, addressing concerns with compassion and wisdom.” Ruth’s favorite words to new faculty members? “You’ll never have a teaching job as wonderful as Priory, it’s so unique.” WOODSIDE PRIORY SCHOOL

SUPPORTING THE PRIORY Giving to Woodside Priory School For 60 years, Woodside Priory School has been graced by the presence of our Benedictine monks, driven by the ambitions of talented teachers and administrators and backed by the generous support of the school’s donors. The Priory enjoys a robust culture of philanthropy sustained by your faithful commitment. We are grateful.

Ways to Give CASH Gifts to Priory may be made by cash, check, credit card or appreciated stock. Make a donation online at: prioryca.org/giveonline STOCKS OR SECURITIES A gift of appreciated stock offers a two-fold tax saving: avoiding capital gains tax on the increase in value of the stock and providing an income tax deduction for the full market value of the stock at the time of the gift. MATCHING CORPORATE GIFTS Many companies offer employees a matching gift benefit that could double the contribution to Priory. Check with your Human Resources Department to see if your employer matches charitable gifts or see the Matching Gift directory at prioryca.org/matchinggifts GIFTS-IN-KIND Items may be donated to Priory, such as computers, software, professional services, and athletic equipment, which provide operational savings and meet the specific needs of Priory. The school does not assign a dollar value to gifts-in-kind. PLANNED GIFTS Donors may consider giving bequests through wills or trusts, life insurance, retirement plan donations and life income gifts. Estate planning can be a way to reduce or avoid estate and inheritance taxes. We encourage you to speak with your financial planner when considering any type of planned gift. We honor those individuals who have made a lasting commitment to our school by including charitable gifts to the Priory in their estate. Those who remember the Priory through a will, trust, designation or other planned gift are invited to join our St. Benedict Society, which recognizes this special form of lasting philanthropy. Please contact Al Zappelli, Senior Director for Strategic Initiatives at azappelli@prioryca.org or 650-851-6101 for more information. Or visit prioryca.org/plannedgiving
