FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL Dear Priory Community, It’s a wonderful time to be at the Priory! This past year brought joy and renewal to our community. We were thrilled to welcome back Father Matthew Leavy, OSB, who served The Priory from 1968-1977 before he was assigned to Saint Anselm College and later elected Abbot of the Monastic community. We were delighted to observe how deeply he connected with our students, faculty, staff, and parent community. The continued presence of our Monks as faith leaders and role models is a blessing that “keeps on giving.” Representatives from three accrediting agencies visited as part of our seven-year accreditation renewal process. The Priory community conducted a self-study, which the visiting committee of educators read and, when on campus in January, they met many members of our community and observed the unique aspects of The Priory Way. We were deeply touched by their positive compliments and analysis of multiple facets of our school community and curriculum, including our rich history of philanthropy. It is this culture of philanthropy that inspires you and others to invest in our future. The dining hall and kitchen renovation kicked off at the end of the school year and we’re looking ahead with anticipation to the completion in December. Construction will also begin soon to expand our campus housing for faculty and staff with six new units on Gambetta Lane. We were thrilled with the annual giving results in the 2018-2019 year. More than $3 million was raised from our community through our annual fund, golf classic, and gala. The year also brought our most competitive admission season yet with a 35% increase in applications. Our dormitory students received an enriched wellness program focusing on sleep, fitness, and healthy eating. We remain immensely proud of our 2019 graduates who led the school community with grace and maturity in the 2018-2019 school year and are now beginning their college careers. Whether you’re a Priory alumnus or alumna, current or alumni parent, member of our Chapel community, or a friend of the Priory, we thank you for your support this past year and look forward to holding you as a friend for years to come. With the school year ahead being my last at the Priory, I am filled with gratitude and appreciation at how our school has been transformed over the past decade and how our Benedictine values continue to guide the Priory of today. Sincerely,
Tim Molak Head of School

ANNUAL REPORT 2018 – 2019
FROM THE CHAIR, BOARD OF TRUSTEES Dear Friends of the Priory, On behalf of the Priory Board of Trustees, it is my honor and privilege to report on the 2018-2019 school year. This was a particularly busy year at the Priory and the Board is grateful to the faculty, staff, alumni, and parent community for coming together in accomplishing so much. The Board, faculty, and staff successfully completed the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation self-study. The report from the team who reviewed the Priory was outstanding. We have so much to be proud of at the Priory. Our relationship with the St. Anselm Abbey remains strong. The Board worked very closely over the last two years in our attempt to strengthen our Monastic community on campus. We were delighted by their decision to appoint Father Matthew Leavy, OSB, to our school as the first new Priory monk in 22 years. Father Matthew has already had a significant impact on our community in the short time he has been here. The year was filled with celebrations and looking to the future. We rejoiced in our annual giving program exceeding $3 million and we are well on our way in renovating our Dining Hall. In addition, preliminary plans have been completed for expanding campus housing for faculty and staff on campus. Once completed, our facilities will be in the best shape the Priory has seen in decades. Lastly, we completed an international search for our new Head of School. We will be celebrating Tim Molak’s spectacular career at the Priory this school year and we look forward to welcoming our new Head of School, Patrick Ruff, in July of 2020. It has been an honor to serve Priory as Chairman of the Board. As we often say, “Always We Begin Again.” It is in the Benedictine spirit that we celebrate these accomplishments and look ahead with joy to a bright and prosperous future at the Priory. Looking back, the Board and I are incredibly grateful for what you and the worldwide Priory community have given to help Priory reach these significant milestones. We are especially indebted to our Founders Club members, true philanthropic leaders in our community whose continuous support enables us to plan and project for the future. Thank you for all you do to support Priory. Every gift is important. Every gift makes a difference. We are grateful to you. Sincerely,
Mike Calbert Chair of the Priory Board of Trustees

STUDENTS SHARE WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT WITH FIRE VICTIMS AND FIRST RESPONDERS Priory mourned alongside the California community in the fall of 2018 when the tragic Camp Fire swept through Paradise, California in Butte County. In addition to participating in fundraising and clothing drives, 6th grade theology students sent
homemade cards to first responders and those affected by the fire. Sixth grade theology teacher Ryanne DeGood explains, “The curriculum in 6th grade theology is designed to help students learn how to be in relationship with themselves, with one another, and with the deep mysteries of life. When the Camp Fire happened, we created a matrix to explore the facts, feelings, and thoughts surrounding the event, and to consider what actions we might take to ease the suffering of the survivors and to thank the heroes and helpers. The cardinal virtues of faith, hope, and love are the foundation of the Gospel. The making of and sending the cards provided comfort to both us and to the recipients.” A selection of the cards and messages students sent to fire victims and first responders in Paradise, CA

ASTRONAUT DREW FEUSTEL Priory students, faculty, and staff have been dazzled twice now by NASA astronaut Drew Feustel presenting his journey to a career as a geophysicist and astronaut. In his most recent presentation at Priory in the spring of 2019, Feustel shared details about his three separate trips to space, what daily life in space is like, and the effects of space travel on humans. Head of School Tim Molak shared, “It’s an inspiring story for kids and adults alike. When he asked if anyone had any questions, 60 hands shot up in the air, he was stunned and had never had that much student interest at any of his previous assemblies. Everyone was fascinated by the pictures, the story of becoming an astronaut, and his personal journey of going to community college and then ending up on the space station. To us, he is a rock star.”

THE MIDDLE SCHOOL COMMUNITY SERVICE BADGE PROGRAM BEGINS The 8th grade class of 2019 had something else to celebrate at their commencement ceremony in June. 32 out of 38 graduates completed 20 or more hours of community service during their middle school years and earned themselves a community service badge to wear at graduation. Completing the service hours was optional but demonstrated the Class of 2023’s desire to give back to their community. Middle School Head Caitha Ambler shared that the majority of students volunteered in the school garden, but that volunteering in schools and churches was also a popular choice. The optional program has completed its inaugural year and is now fully incorporated into middle school life with 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students encouraged to get involved and volunteer at school and in their community.

A NEW TRADITION Adding to the pomp and circumstance of graduation, the Class of 2019 commenced a new tradition to celebrate their transition from current student to graduate. Led by Associate Director of Development, Marketing and Alumni Engagement Diana Chamorro and Father Matthew Leavy, the 72 graduates gathered in the Al Zappelli Alumni Courtyard for the inaugural Alumni Induction Ceremony. The intimate ceremony allowed the graduates to pause from the excitement of graduation and reflect on their time at Priory, and, while they are taking the next step in their lives, they were reminded that Priory is and always will be their home. Following remarks and a blessing, Tim Molak unveiled 2019’s class panel and the graduates were able to see their names inscribed amongst all Priory alumni. The ceremony culminated with each student receiving their official Alumni Pin and class mug.

Alumni Show Their #Love4Priory Answering the call to show their gratitude for Priory and pay it forward to support the next generation, alumni spanning three continents and six decades came together to show their #Love4Priory in honor of the Alumni Association’s inaugural giving day on November 27. Leading up to the day, dedicated Class Captains helped encourage classmates to join them in demonstrating their appreciation for the transformational impact Priory has had on their lives with a gift in support of the Alumni Scholarship Fund and a future students’ pursuit of a Priory education. The Roaring Twenties came to the Sharon Heights Golf & Country Club for the 2019 Priory gala! Dressed in a mixture of feathers, sequins, pearls, and fedoras, guests were glamorously dressed to the nines as they socialized, dined, and supported Priory’s annual giving program. Gala co-chairs Nicole Chambers and Lisa Putnam and Gala Coordinator Donna Chandra led a team of dozens of volunteers in producing an extraordinary silent and live auction. In total, $957,713 was raised for Priory and we couldn’t be prouder of our community working together to support our school!

Our school community celebrated Diwali on November 8 on Schilling Square. Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights symbolizing the spiritual victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance
ENDOWMENT AND SCHOLARSHIPS Priory’s future is inspired by its Endowment, invested money from which the school draws each year, at a rate designed to preserve capital and to supplement the operating income provided by tuition and gifts to the Annual Fund. The Priory Endowment is comprised of numerous named endowment funds, many of which are established to honor family members, friends, and beloved members of our community. The Class Legacy Funds are established each year in honor of the graduating class and begin with a portion of senior parent Annual Fund gifts. The fund grows each year as gifts are added and a portion of earnings support Financial Aid.

8TH GRADERS VISIT WASHINGTON, D.C. Priory’s substantial middle school humanities curriculum culminates in 8th grade with a week-long trip to Washington, D.C. According to 8th grade humanities teacher Kyle Utsumi, “Priory eighth-graders travel to our nation’s capital each fall to experience American history first-hand. Visits to monuments, museums, and seats of government open students’ eyes to the story of our country’s founding and the challenges Americans have faced and overcome throughout history. In addition to laying the groundwork for their history studies, the class enjoys time together outside the classroom, building bonds of friendship and unity that last long after returning to the Priory.” The September trip is an excellent way for students to kick off the school year and apply what they witnessed and learned in Washington, D.C. throughout the year and into their high school experience.
Students learn and explore Washington, D.C. together

LEADERSHIP CIRCLE EVENT Leadership donors were celebrated on March 2, 2019 at a special sit-down dinner in the dining hall. The three course meal and hors d’oeuvres were prepared entirely by Priory’s kitchen staff and served by students. Attendees dined on special Priory cocktails and listened to an exciting presentation about the new dining hall. Those in attendance have generously supported the school with gifts of $10,000 or more in the current fiscal year, or $100,000 or more given over their lifetime. We are indebted to these generous friends of Priory and were overjoyed to host them for this special dinner.

SUSTAINING DONORS
Priory’s Board of Trustees
The act of giving is meaningful and impactful. It is also deeply personal. Through the generosity of our sustaining donors who have given consecutively over the years, Priory has been able to meet changing needs and priorities as they arise. In addition to our giving societies, we also provide special recognition for those who have supported Priory every year for five or more consecutive years. Regardless of amount, an annual gift is a valuable investment in our future. Consecutive Years

SUSTAINING DONOR PROFILE: KEN TEHANEY ‘66 For Ken Tehaney ‘66, the Priory has been a journey through the years and with different lenses. His relationship with the school began when he was a student, and deepened when he returned to the school as a parent of three children. He was a member of the Board of Trustees, and continues to be a member of the Building and Grounds Committee during the major campus transformation. Through the decades, Ken has and always will be, a friend of the school. Asked why he continues to care for and support the school each year, Ken replied, “The Priory is a compassionate community that teaches you to care for yourself, for others, and to give back for the gifts you have received.” Ken has continued caring for and making a gift to the school for each of the last 23 years. In fact, Ken ties with seven other Priory donors for second place in the most consecutive years of support. “The Priory has been extremely important to our family as it has continued to evolve,” Ken says. He shares that seeing the Priory as a parent was particularly special. “The Priory community has a tremendous amount of humility and that kind of stewardship is infectious, not just for the parents, but for the kids, who are learning to take care of themselves, and to take care of others.” It’s the personal attention that the Priory gives that remains memorable to Ken. “You’re talking about the middle school and high school years, which can be a tough time for children to learn how to deal with all the harshness that may come about. The Priory community has found a way to make sure that none of the students fall through the cracks and that they reach their greatest potential.” For Ken as an alumnus, alumni parent, and past trustee, the school continues to teach the values and importance of intentionality. “The Priory has always been very concerned with conscious living and living in the moment. Time is the truest valuable gift we have. They do a great job of teaching that and purpose in life.”

Leaving a Legacy: Al Zappelli “I won’t say goodbye, but rather Bye for Now, and Thanks for the Memories,” Al Zappelli wrote to faculty and staff in the spring of 2019 after graduation while looking ahead to his retirement. Arriving at the Priory in the fall of 1990, Al served as Director of Admissions for 26 years, welcoming roughly 75% of Priory’s entire alumni body to the school. Working closely with Head of School Tim Molak, Al hosted admissions breakfasts, open houses, and frequently traveled to feeder schools to spread the word about a Priory education. When he transitioned to Senior Director for Strategic Initiatives in 2016, Al focused on the Benedictine history and Catholic identity of the school, spearheaded the 60th anniversary celebration, and worked with the Development Office in overseeing planned giving. In a letter to the Priory community in 2019 announcing the Al Zappelli Endowed Scholarship Fund, Tim Molak writes, “Without Al’s deep commitment to the Catholic faith and Benedictine mission of our school, Priory would not have survived its lean years and developed into the flourishing educational and spiritual home the current generation enjoys.” As Al transitions into retirement, we are thankful for his leadership and contributions to the Priory.

SUPPORTING THE PRIORY Giving to Woodside Priory School For 61 years, Woodside Priory School has been graced by the presence of our Benedictine monks, driven by the ambitions of talented teachers and administrators and backed by the generous support of the school’s donors. The Priory enjoys a robust culture of philanthropy sustained by your faithful commitment. We are grateful.
Ways to Give CASH Gifts to Priory may be made by cash, check, credit card or appreciated stock. Make a donation online at: prioryca.org/giveonline STOCKS OR SECURITIES A gift of appreciated stock offers a two-fold tax saving: avoiding capital gains tax on the increase in value of the stock and providing an income tax deduction for the full market value of the stock at the time of the gift. MATCHING CORPORATE GIFTS Many companies offer employees a matching gift benefit that could double the contribution to Priory. Check with your Human Resources Department to see if your employer matches charitable gifts or see the Matching Gift directory at prioryca.org/matchinggifts GIFTS-IN-KIND Items may be donated to Priory, such as computers, software, professional services, and athletic equipment, which provide operational savings and meet the specific needs of Priory. The school does not assign a dollar value to gifts-in-kind. PLANNED GIFTS Donors may consider giving bequests through wills or trusts, life insurance, retirement plan donations and life income gifts. Estate planning can be a way to reduce or avoid estate and inheritance taxes. We encourage you to speak with your financial planner when considering any type of planned gift. We honor those individuals who have made a lasting commitment to our school by including charitable gifts to the Priory in their estate. Those who remember the Priory through a will, trust, designation or other planned gift are invited to join our St. Benedict Society, which recognizes this special form of lasting philanthropy. Please contact Suzanne Couch, Director of Development at scouch@prioryca.org or 650-851-6139 for more information. Or visit prioryca.org/plannedgiving
