FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

O

n July 1, I began my service as Head of School, and it has been a grace to be part of this extraordinary community that has such a blessed history. I am grateful to all our former Heads of School for what they have done for the Priory, we are a better and stronger community because of their hard work and vision. It is clear the Priory has a bright future. At the core of our mission; retain our Benedictine charism that includes an inclusive spirit, a generous heart, and a loving community. The Priory exists to help our students become people of integrity, honesty, and respect; to be people of virtue, personal responsibility, goodness, kindness, and faith. The formation of a strong character and a balanced moral center is more important than ever in our world today. Above all, it matters who our students become during and after the years they spend on our 51 acers. The 2019-2020 Annual Report reflects the generosity of so many wonderful people who support Woodside Priory and our mission to educate and form students who take intellectual and creative risks, to discover their passions, to share their gifts with others, and to grow in heart, mind, and soul.

“For all that has been. Thank you. For all that is to come. Yes!” The Priory is more than just a school; it is a family, and I am so grateful for the gifts we share. Dag Hammarskjold, the Swedish Diplomat and 2nd Secretary General of the U.N. spoke a very simple prayer that has stayed with me in these early months of my service at Woodside Priory. “For all that has been. Thank you. For all that is to come. Yes!” I like that prayer because it speaks of the gratitude and generosity by which we encourage our students to live. For all that has been at the Priory, thank you all. For all that is to come. Yes! Thank you for all your support, the good work that has been done in the past and the good work we will do together. Always we begin again,

Patrick Ruff Head of School

FROM THE CHAIR, BOARD OF TRUSTEES

D

ear friends of the Priory,

Michael into our community. Patrick spent a great deal of time and energy this year immersing himself in the school community so that as he assumed the position of Head of School on July 1, 2020, he is fully prepared to lead Priory in the coming years. Finally, no report would be complete without an acknowledgement of enormous challenge beset upon our school as a result of the global pandemic. We are very proud of all the hard work by our faculty and staff to effectively and creatively respond to the rapidly changing environment with the wellbeing of the students as their focus. Thank you for all you do to support our wonderful school. We are especially indebted to our Founders Club members, true philanthropic leaders in our community whose continuous support enables us to plan for and thrive in an increasingly complex future. Please know that each and every gift is important, and that each gift makes a difference. Thank you.

On behalf of both the Board of Trustees and the Board of Directors, I am very pleased to report on the 2019 – 2020 academic year. This has been a year in which we experienced the end of one era while preparing for the beginning of a new one. Later we entered what has become a long period of enormous uncertainty and change. The Board is incredibly grateful to the entire faculty and staff as well as the parent community for their steadfast support and commitment to the school and its mission during this time. On campus this past year, we celebrated the opening of the newly renovated dining hall, preserving the spectacular views of Windy Hill while transforming the space to provide more room and versatility for dining and gathering. We also received the building permit necessary to initiate the construction of a new 6-unit building of faculty housing. While both poignant and joyful, the Priory community said goodbye to our Head of School Tim Molak after his 30 years of unwavering service to the school and its community. While Tim is no longer present on campus, his fingerprints are everywhere you look, and his work was fueled by your philanthropy for which we are very grateful. In the spirit of always beginning again, we are correspondingly delighted to welcome Patrick, his wife Kerry Ann, and his two boys Matthew and

With gratitude,

Dominique Filloux Chair of the Priory Board of Trustees

ANNUAL FUND The most important, valuable, and tangible way to demonstrate support for Priory is through a gift to the Annual Fund. These essential, unrestricted gifts bridge the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a Priory education to satisfy the operating budget. The majority of which includes salaries and benefits for our inspired faculty and staff. Our community is small by design, so every gift is important. Every gift makes a difference. Priory’s vibrant culture of philanthropy is evidenced by Annual Fund support. During the 2019-2020 fiscal year, celebrated in this report, the Annual Fund raised a total of $2.13M. We extend our deepest gratitude to those who gave and made achieving this ambitious goal possible. Thank you!

Two red and gold lions balanced atop stacked benches in Schilling Square, rolling their eyes and flapping their mouths, before leaping to the ground. They stomped from student to student, batting their eyelashes and finally rolling out glittering good luck banners. San Francisco’s White Crane lion dancing troupe wowed the Priory crowd on February 6, 2020, to honor Lunar New Year 4718, the Year of the Metal Rat. Falling on January 25 this year, Lunar New Year is celebrated for the seven days leading up to New Year’s Day and continues for 15 days after. Teachers Wei Kelly and Sarah Sanchez coordinated with Mandarin class parents Christina Baszucki, Cat Carlton, Grace Yuan, Tia Miller, Julia Dickerson, Hattie Shieh, and Emilia Schor to offer activities, such as zhezhi paper folding, and crowd-pleasing foods like egg rolls, dumplings, and sesame balls.”It was a perfect day for a celebration as it was a warm day and everyone had smiles, loved the crafts and food!” recalls parent volunteer Christina Baszucki. Mandarin teacher Sarah Sanchez says, “Every detail was so well-planned by the administration and parents. As a Mandarin teacher, it was inspiring to see the entire Priory community show such enthusiasm for the celebration.” Many wore red shirts to campus that day and received bright red envelopes to bring good luck for this auspicious year. “It was a treat to celebrate the Lunar New Year at Priory!” says Madeleine Schor (‘26). “Lion dancers, painting, chopstick challenge, and delicious food - what a great day!”

After seven months of dining outdoors under tents, and the kitchen staff making meals in a portable kitchen, Priory’s newly renovated Dining Hall opened in January 2020. The entire Priory community gathered to bless and formally dedicate the new outdoor patio to longtime employee, Nate Spears, and the indoor servery to Juliana Szekely, well known for her heaping servings. Completely rebuilt after 56 years and millions of meals, the new Dining Hall has a new kitchen, two serving lines, a new dish drop location, drink stations, and a beautiful new Refectory for the monks overlooking Windy Hill.

* May his memory be a blessing

In an effort to create hands on, creative, engaging opportunities for middle schoolers during last spring’s distance learning, Middle School Head Caitha Ambler led Priory teachers to design a Badge program. Students chose from the categories Spirit, Reading Club, PE, and Creativity to explore topics, enjoy a good book, work out with Coaches David Moseley and Jen Lee, paint and draw, and take photos. Each week, Ms. Ambler posted names of students who had achieved the badge requirements. As spring continued, the program morphed into the MS Spotlight series, where two teachers co-created a hybrid project, such as Express Yourself (Visual Arts and Drama), PA Kapow (drama and music), Nature via Tech (CS and exploration), Outside the Box (exploration and visual arts), and Vector and Quill (Visual Arts and CS). Art teacher Reed Sullivan (Quill) collaborated with Computer Science teacher Christine Hemiup (Vector) on a drawing lesson where students first drew a thistle on recycled paper bags, then later drew a thistle on the iPad. They later compared the pros and cons of these methods. “Both the kids and teachers enjoyed this series of lessons very much,” says Ms. Hemiup. These fun and engaging options offered middle schoolers lots of choices and chances to explore.

GALA

On A Safari Engages the Priory Community While Gala Chair Cynthia Mahood Levin and her 2020 Gala committee always knew they were being tasked to bring the Serengeti to Sharon Heights Country Club, they didn’t realize that they would be bringing the Safari to everyone’s home computers and laptops. But on March 28th, the On A Safari Gala committee did just that. After months of planning menus, hiring DJ’s and a photobooth, choosing table cloths and deciding centerpiece décor, they scratched the party, switched gears, and pumped up our online auction. Luckily, we were already prepared: our auction items with descriptions and photos were live ready to go. But – how to market these wonderful curated items? We jumped into action filming Fr. Martin lovingly creating his tall clock and David Moseley horsing around the gym playing basketball. We even had Carolyn Putney show up in safari gear to make a plea for supporting Fund A Future. These newly manufactured videos were sent to parents, past parents and alumni. Our online Gala brought all of our constituents together to support the school’s largest fundraiser. In fact, 35% of our live auction, 19% of our raffle tickets and 10% of our auction items were bought by past parents and alumni. This would not have happened had we been at an in-person event. After a mini celebration of a job well done, it was on the logistics of how do we distribute during a shelter in place lockdown? Some things were easy like mailing gift certificates or making local deliveries. We had Fr. Matthew and Fr. Martin pull a name for our raffle and announced in our Weekly Bulletin. Finally, we hosted our first-ever masked curbside pick-up — all to much success! We want to thank our Priory community who came together to support the school. We are pleased to report that we raised $700,000 during some pretty uncertain times, while keeping our expenses at all-time low. We are humbled and grateful to all: those who donated, those who purchased and those who supported Fund A Need. A major group effort with marvelous results! Congratulations Priory!

Galloway Michelle and Brett

D O N O R F E AT U R E

The Galloway family boasts 3 graduates from Priory: Will ’14, Matt ’16 and Josh ’19. Parents Brett and Michelle spent fifteen school years as active members of the Priory community. Recently, we asked them to reflect on their experience as members of the Priory community. What impressed you most about the Priory? We started visiting Priory the year before our eldest child would apply to high school. As parents, what struck us was that Priory encourages kids to explore – academically, athletically, artistically, and everything in between. Priory meets students where they are – they don’t have to be in a box of the “academic superstar” or the “jock.” Rather, they can try so many things. There are always adults and other students cheering on their efforts. That only happens with a faculty committed to making sure that kids can manage being an athlete, being in a play or choir and still taking a challenging course load. We met students living that experience, parents talking about it, and faculty who were teaching “like their hair is on fire.” What our oldest son most noticed was the faculty and the international students in the boarding program. He wanted the opportunity to expand his world and to begin meeting students from other cultures and backgrounds. Our middle son also looked at a variety of high schools and found off-putting that many were so focused on the number of AP classes taken or the championships won. We believe that “excellence with humility” is an important value. Priory focuses on its mission and students at all times. No matter what a student is trying – in class, on the fields, in the PAC or elsewhere, they will have classmates, faculty and staff, Monks, and other parents cheering them on in their effort. That is something that in our experience is rare. Life-long learning and curiosity is being modelled because teachers are involved as coaches and mentors.

How have you been involved in Priory campus life? We are mindful that we have been blessed both in time, talents and treasure. One of the greatest joys of our time at Priory was watching all three of our sons thrive in the theater (performing and tech) and choir (concert and chamber). They learned one of the most valuable skills in life – collaboration. More importantly, they had joy in being with their classmates, faculty and the entire community at performances. Even now, we may watch a movie, performance or hear music and they will burst out in song together laughing and talking about what they did

at Priory. It was the common shared experience that all three boys will always have. As parents, we were able to share in that too. We have done everything from hemming ripped costumes to wielding power tools and paintbrushes, preparing sets, and delivering snacks and pizza. Michelle travelled with the choir to Europe. Brett and two of our sons went on a trip arranged by Priory teacher, Gulliver Lavalle, to Argentina over spring break. These were shared family experiences and a chance to get to know other Priory families.

What does it mean to be a leadership donor? We feel a strong responsibility to pay it forward. This was guided, in part, by our experience with the PAC. Families we did not know gave to create the PAC so that the arts at Priory went from a stage set up in a small library to a fully functioning theater featuring opportunities both to perform and do tech. It created space for choirs and for instrumental music. When we arrived, almost 2/3 of the Priory students participated in some way in a program at the PAC. Our sons and our family benefited from the generosity of others and we wanted to honor that by helping create new space for new programs for learning and creativity. We were the first ones to write a check for the Building Ingenuity Capital Campaign. Our objective was to supercharge the campaign – to provide funds that could be spent immediately to get things moving and to inspire others to think about what could be possible with new academic and creative spaces. Only our youngest son was able to spend time in the new academic building, but we are grateful that Priory students now and in the future will benefit from these spaces and perhaps find that thing that contributes to their sense of belonging, sense of accomplishment and sparks some lifelong interest.

How do you choose where to give? As donors, our goal is to focus on impact: what programs and opportunities can be created. We give unrestricted gifts so that school leadership has the flexibility to determine the needs to be met and the opportunities primed to move forward. We were Continued on page 30

so excited to hear from faculty and others about ideas for expanded lab space and spaces for creativity and learning (robotics, glass, metal work, etc.). What if we could add a little “fuel” to the sparks that fly when a group of teachers are inspiring a group of curious students? We knew it could be amazing! We also are committed to ensuring that Priory students be able to fully participate in the community. That means ensuring that students and families that need help have the funds needed for financial aid but that they could also participate in robotics and choir trips, formal, or any other activity open to Priory students. Michelle was a volunteer with Annual Fund, Founders Club, and a Co-Chair of the Campaign.

What is the story behind winning the auction for Father Martin’s last clock? The monastic community was very important to the boys. They offer a quiet presence in the world of Silicon Valley. They always have time to step into a class, cheer from the sideline or have a quiet one on one conversation. Though we had bid on other clocks, when Brett saw the black walnut, we knew it was “the one.” We loved it but also wanted to be sure that with the auction as a remote event that it met its goal to provide the financial support for this school year. We are thrilled that Father Martin’s 36th clock will be part of our home!

Three Sons at Priory: What did your Priory experience mean for you? JOSH (‘19) “My experience at Priory was one of personal and academic growth kindled by the many amazing people in Priory’s faculty. I miss the interactions with staff and teachers that felt so routine but in retrospect were very formative.”

WILL (‘16) “My time at Priory was all about passion and growth. With supportive teachers, I was encouraged to embrace my learning at every step, whether in the classroom or in the theater or robotics lab. Those experiences have not only shaped my hobbies but taught me to bring my love of learning wherever I go.”

MATT (‘14) “My Priory experiences shaped who I am today. My ability to think critically about the world around me was something built out of my history and English classes. I learned more about my faith in theology, chapel, and even the music I sang in choir. As I reflect on my time at Priory, I think about how many different experiences I was lucky enough to have.”

Priory has stood on the cutting edge of sustainability since 2013, repeatedly earning a Gold Medal designation from the US Department of Education. But 2020 was extra special as Priory won the highest possible honor: The California Association of Private School Organizations (CAPSO) Green Achiever Award from the Department of Education and the Environmental Protection Agency. This award recognizes Priory’s efforts at designing sustainable buildings and campus operations, committing to the wellness of the entire school community, and balancing STREAM education with service learning and stewardship. The application effort was led by teacher and Sustainability Director Hovey Clark and supported by many on campus, including Director of Systems and Innovation Yvonne Faisal and Facilities Manager Lou Roselli. But it takes the effort of every person on campus to contribute to our sustainability efforts and uphold these values, through recycling and composting, monitoring electricity usage, and reducing use of resources. “I am delighted that the Priory was recognized with an award of such distinction,” says Hovey Clark, “and while I am proud of the Priory’s path to sustainability so far, I am also hopeful that we can use this as a turning point in the journey -- a moment when we see that our school has both the opportunity and responsibility to demonstrate real leadership and innovation in sustainable schooling.” 31

Celebrating light and prosperity, the Diwali festival from India filled Schilling Square on November 7, 2019. Students ate samosas or enjoyed sweets like shakkar para, washed down with mango lassi. While some students painted clay candle holders called diyas, others were adorned with mehndi (henna) designs or made rangoli sand art from stencils. The bright reds, yellows, and purples of the intricate rangoli designs were fun to try out and new to many students. Parents Aarti and Navneet Singh, Sahana Singh (‘21), and Dean of Students Micah Morris organized this joyous event. A group of students wore their best brightly-colored salwar kameez, and Mr. Morris even wore his ivory kurta to honor the holiday. Staff and students alike danced to Bollywood tracks and live drumming by Grady while following the dance directions of Geeta, who led all in stamping their feet, flinging their fingers, and twirling in a serpentine circle. Some dancers, like Eli Roybal (‘20), even ventured into the center of the circle to show off their fancy moves. Sahana Singh remarked that “This celebration added to the sense of diversity in the Priory community. I felt like my culture was appreciated and admired.” 33

On February 27, 2020 it was a warm night as Priory invited our leadership donors to celebrate the opening of our new dining hall and the start of a new era for the school. The evening commenced with a cocktail reception in the newly christened Spears Plaza, complete with the spectacular new fountain. As the cooler temperatures and crepescule light arrived on the hilltop, the attendees then had the opportunity to dine on a three course meal while listening to speeches that both honored the substantial legacy of outgoing head of school Tim Molak, as well as the passion and commitment of incoming head Patrick Ruff. These gifts truly make school advancements such as the dining hall possible as we continue to secure the future of Priory.

Though the generosity of our sustaining donors who have given consecutively year-over-year, Priory has been able to meet changing needs and priorities as they arise. In addition to our giving societies, we also provide special recognition for those who have supported Priory every year for five or more consecutive years. Regardless of the amount, an annual gift is a valuable investment in our future. Sustaining Donor Profile: Hank Plain For the last twenty consecutive years, Alumni Parent, former Trustee, and former Board Chair, Hank Plain has made a leadership gift to Founders Club. Along with Ray Rothrock, Hank founded Founders Club to help Priory attract the best quality faculty and staff through a competitive benefits package. “Another reason we started Founders Club was to focus on diversity which could only be achieved through broad parent support of financial aid.” The product of a middle-class Midwestern family of educators, his father was the assistant principal of his high school, Hank grew up understanding the importance of education, respect for educators, and the benefit of learning in an environment of diversity. As his children Hap ‘06 and Alex ‘08 went through the school, Hank got to know Fr. Martin, Tim, and members of the faculty. He eventually joined the Hank and Lisa Plain board and participated on the finance committee, “It was humbling to serve on the finance committee and witness how well the school was run, with small class sizes, a wide variety of clubs and programs beyond athletics and academics despite the financial challenges.” “In the beginning, we made phone calls to parents we thought may have the capacity to make a Founders Club gift and to encourage them to support those kids who otherwise would not be able to come to Priory. Looking back on it, my kids were transformed by their Priory education. Along with the opportunity to learn within a diverse student body, it was equally important for them to be exposed to the monks and their Benedictine values. I am thankful to the very generous parents who had the means to step up back then. The fact that Founders Club has lived on is very gratifying.” 39

Giving to Woodside Priory School For 62 years, Woodside Priory School has been graced by the presence of our Benedictine monks, driven by the ambitions of talented teachers and administrators and backed by the generous support of the school’s donors. The Priory enjoys a robust culture of philanthrophy sustained by your faithful commitment. We are grateful.

Ways to Give CASH Gifts to Priory may be made by cash, check, credit card or apprecated stock. Make a donation online at priory.org/giveonline

STOCKS OR SECURITIES A gift of appreciated stock offers a twofold tax saving: avoiding capital gains

tax on the increase in value of the stock and providing an income tax deduction for the full market value of the stock at the time of the gift.

MATCHING CORPORATE GIFTS Many companies offer employees a matching gift benefit that could double the contribution to Priory. Check with your Human Resources Department to see if your employer matches charitable gifts or see the Matching gift directory at prioryca.org/giveonline

GIFTS-IN-KIND Items may be donated to Priory, such as computers, software, professional services, and athletic equipment, which provide operational savings and meet the specific needs of Priory. The school does not assign a dollar value to giftsin-kind.

PLANNED GIFTS Donors may consider giving bequests through wills or trusts, life insurance, retirement plan donations and life income gifts. Estate planning can be a way to reduce or avoid estate and inheritance taxes. We encourage you to speak with your financial planner which considering any type of planned gift. We honor those individuals who have made a lasting commitment to our school by including charitable gifts to the Priory in their estate. Those who remember the Priory through a will, trust, designation or other planned gift are invited to join our St. Benedict Society, which recognizes this special form of lasting philanthrophy. Please contact Suzanne Couch, Director of Advancement at scouch@prioryca.org or 650-851-6139 for more information.

ANNUAL GIVING

A Flurry of Activity in the Corner of Campus

Never before in the history of the school has the Priory campus been so quiet during school hours. It’s not until Distance Learning has ended for the day that small groups of students come to campus for after school sports, enrichment classes, class Chapels, or class socials. We are indeed fortunate and uniquely positioned to be able to provide our students with opportunities to interact and socialize outdoors, masked, and safely distanced.

42

Even though the main campus area may be quiet, there is a flurry of activity fenced off in a corner, where Priory’s Campus Housing project is coming to life. Every weekday since the groundbreaking and undeterred by the pandemic, progress is underway. Six new units, four-3 bedroom and two-2 bedroom, are slated for completion next summer. With trees removed, the site leveled and the foundation poured evidence of progress is concrete. A new beginning is in the works!
