Like its country of residence, Priory is a cultural mosaic. Different people, different homes, different visions. It’s these differences that drive us to seek out a place in which we fit comfortably, a place where we feel we belong. It’s these differences that, in a place filled with those dissimilar to ourselves, drives us to ostracize things and people that we feel we have nothing to do with. It’s going to a school like priory that has made me realize that, in truth, we have as much in common as we do differences. Many people call America a cultural mosaic, but perhaps we are all mosaics ourselves. Full of hundreds of things that make us individuals, hundreds of colors that we use to paint the world in billions of different ways. Priory encourages us to paint outside of the lines, to use our own unique collection of vividness to doodle instead of trace, to create instead of construct according to a certain set of rules. No matter what we go on to create, we will always carry with us our Priory blue. -- Written by Kayla Martinez

licking, ted talks &Dedication other Payne-ful stroreis Teacher By: Sarah Park and Leyan Zhai An awe-inspiring embodiment of kindness and patience, Ms. Payne has been a guiding hand for the Class of 2019. We’ve all confided in and embarrassed ourselves in front of Ms. Payne before (and if she was silently judging us the entire time, at least she has a pretty great poker face). She’s dealt with daily exchanges like the following: Unnamed Senior: “Do I staple my essay together, or should I use a paper clip?” Ms. Payne: “You know, you are all brilliant young men and women! Use your creative license!” Unnamed Senior: “I’m just gonna lick it.” Ms. Payne, without batting an eye: “Maybe that’s a little too creative?” Seriously, she’s put up with some strange things, and that’s just from our class. How she does it? We’ll likely never know, but we all aspire to achieve it.

Ms. Payne entered Priory’s upper school community in the same year that we did. From English Foundations I to American Woman to Short Stories and many more, she watched us grow --- and gave us a few muchneeded tips along the way. Ms. Payne had always held a special place in our hearts, and was a comrade and helpful hand as we integrated ourselves into the Priory community. Mrs. Payne balances high expectations with empathetic flexibility; she is fair and good and inhabits the Benedictine values that we constantly (constantly) hear about. She brings much-needed classroom humor to our stressful days, and is always willing to listen if you need to talk. But besides being a basically perfect human being, Ms. Payne is a brilliant educator. She engages us in class discussions and activities, and strongly encourages students to revise their writing (her policy of revising essays has saved our grades and improved our skills on multiple occasions). From writing original short stories to giving TED talks, Ms. Payne inspires creativity in the classroom. She pushes us to exceed our own expectations, and set ever-higher goals for ourselves. Inside the classroom and out, you are one of the best and brightest people we’ve ever had the pleasure to learn from. As we move on to the next chapter in our lives, we’ll remember your bubbly enthusiasm, hilarious stories, and those little inside jokes (we do still need to get that swear jar, don’t we?). Ms. Payne, you’ve taught us that kindness is a priceless currency. You’ve taught us that it is never too late to learn from our mistakes. You are the role model we definitely needed throughout our four years at Priory, and the gift that keeps on giving. For these reasons, and so many more, we dedicate this 2019 yearbook to you. a midsummer night’ s dream All School Play By: Ada Fathers and Sarah Park
11 1. In this year’s all school play, middle and high schoolers alike came together to perform their take on the play, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” ”A Midsummer Night’s Dream” is a comedy written by William Shakespeare in 1595/96. It portrays the events surrounding the marriage of Theseus, the Duke of Athens, to Hippolyta, the former queen of the Amazons. The play is one of Shakespeare's most popular works for the stage and is widely performed across the world. When asked about his experience Grant Whitman says, “it was wonderful to be able to work with so many different people on this magical set within a magical play.” 2. Mr. Roth and fellow techies are responsible for every light, scene change, and sound effect that allow the actors to perform. Here, Mr. Roth is seen behind the scenes ensuring all is ready for the performance.

The comic Upper School play, “The Government Inspector,”entertained audiences with six shows this year! Due to the large number of talented performers, two casts were created, the St. Petersberg Cast, and the Moscow Cast. During one of the rainiest March’s in history, a power outage almost caused a cancellation of a Saturday matinee show, but with just 20 minutes before showtime, the power was restored and the show went on!

1. Jamie Field (7) confidently begins her run for the day, laughing conversationally with fellow teammate, Ellie Turk (7). Jamie being new to the Priory team, was definitely beneficial, and created a new aspect for the 7th/8th grade team. “I love running, because you can choose whether it’s a personal sport or a team sport,” she says. I’m glad that a new cross country star could join the team. 2. Steve Marsheck shows off his famous smolder, while coaching his team. After a more difficult practice, he instructs his “little tigers” on endurance and running form. As Mr. Marsheck notoriously quotes “This is the best Middle School
Cross Country team of the year.” This title truly lives up to its name. 3. The sixth graders prepare to begin the yearly Crystal Springs relay race with anticipation. Introducing multiple new star runners, this year’ s sixth graders were ranked first in their league, for the first time in a while. “I have done track and cross country before, but not until this year have I really challenged myself. I think this has improved my running a lot,” Liberty Fathers (6) reports. We certainly haven't seen this much young potential before, and we look forward to them thriving on the team.

Can you guess which baby is which Senior?
letter to seniors Dear Seniors By: Sarah Park and Leyan Zhai I am always surprised and amazed at the passage of time; how swiftly is goes and becomes the history that we may review from time to time as we grow older and wiser. We have been at the Priory for a combined 73 years. In those many years we have experienced the Priory grow from a smaller and less complicated school to one of the finest educational institutions in Northern California. With each graduating class there is left behind a huge memory bank of personalities, events, and adventures that have helped to form the Priory into what it is today. Each class develops its own personality and thereby becomes a stepping-stone for the classes that follow. The Class of 2019 has proven to be one of the finest classes in the long and proud history of the Priory. It has excelled in leadership qualities, strongly influencing the underclassmen with spirit and direction. Academic success, reflected in the diverse college opportunities offered to members of the class, has been outstanding. Interest and accomplishment in the arts, in drama, on the athletic fields has surely provided direction for those to follow. Involvement in Campus Ministry activities and generous support for the various drives and appeals to relieve the suffering of those in need has been remarkable. The class of 2019 has indeed made a statement. May the Benedictine values of Community, individuality, hospitality, spirituality and integrity serve you well as you move on to yet another phase of your journeys. May you keep each other safely in your hearts as you go your separate ways, and may you always remember to dance as if no one was watching. Father Martin, O.S.B. Monastic Superior
